...Widely Scattered Storms...
Yesterday in Birmingham the high was 88 degrees, and it was the fifth
consecutive day with temperatures below 90 degrees. Not bad at all for
mid-July in Alabama, but our streak might end today as we are
forecasting a high of 92 degrees. The hotter afternoon is because we
expect a better supply of sunshine today, with only widely scattered
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and early tonight. Humidity
levels will remain fairly high, making the afternoon feel pretty
sticky.
TO THE NORTH: A sharp surface front is moving southward parts of the
Midwest this morning, and that front should bring a general increase
in the number of showers and storms late tomorrow and tomorrow night
as that boundary gets close to Alabama. Most of the rain will come
from about 3:00 p.m. until 12:00 midnight, with most communities
getting about one hour of rain.
OUR WEEKEND: Lots of debate in the weather office; and quite frankly
some disagreement among computer models concerning weekend weather.
The NAM (North American Mesoscale) model pushes dry air quickly into
North Alabama late tomorrow night, and suggests we will be totally
rain-free on Saturday. However, the GFS (Global Forecast System) model
is slower, and still has the front near the Alabama/Tennessee border
at midday Saturday. Considering the time of year, we will side with
the GFS for now and maintain a chance of scattered showers and storms
on Saturday. Both models bring the drier air southward Saturday night,
and for now we will go ahead and forecast a sunny day on Sunday with
no rain and lower humidity. That really doesn't happen too often in
late July in Alabama, but the idea is supported by a very high
amplitude upper air pattern, with a nice upper trough up and down the
eastern seaboard of the U.S.
NEXT WEEK: Moist air slowly returns, and a few scattered, mainly
afternoon and evening showers and storms should return to Alabama by
the middle part of next week. Looks like highs mostly in the low 90s,
right at normal levels for this time of the year.
CONGRATULATIONS to Troy Dungan of WFAA-TV (Channel 8) in Dallas on his
retirement from the world of television weather. I competed against
Troy in the mid 1980s when I was the lead weather anchor at KDFW-TV
(Channel 4) in Dallas, which was the CBS affiliate at the time. Troy
started at WFAA on July 19, 1976, when times were different and life
was a little slower. Many folks know him for his bow ties, but he is
an excellent communicator and was always a calm voice during severe
weather in North Texas. It is funny how many people think we have the
easiest job in the world, but folks need to walk a mile in our shoes.
We have gone from doing simple weathercasts on the news on TV to an
staggering array of blog posts, podcasts, Internet videos, radio
weather jobs, and speaking engagements. This is a harsh business that
is often thankless, and for someone to handle weather at one station
for 31 years is an amazing accomplishment. Thanks for the great work,
Troy... I hope you can get some rest now!
