...A Nice December Snow...

Snow and Christmas lights make for a nice Holiday combination in the Deep South. For us in Central Alabama, snowfall amounts generally amounted to a dusting to an inch. The snow is gone and skies have cleared over the western part of the state and will slowly clear over the East this afternoon. We then get ready for the coldest night of the year so far with a widespread freeze likely.

HISTORIC SNOW: While it was not a historic snow in Alabama, it was to our west. One year ago, on December 10th, Houston recorded its earliest snow ever. They beat it by five days this year. One inch of snow fell at Hobby and Intercontinental in Houston on Friday, both records for the date, obviously since it had never snowed before December 10th previously. 2.5 inches fell in Pearland and 4 inches in Boling and Lane City. There were some nice amounts across Central Louisiana, including 2 inches at Leesville, Ville Platte, Dequincy and 2.5 inches in Rosepine. The 1/3 of an inch at Lafayette is the earliest ever observed there. A year, the early December storm dropped some amazing snowfall amounts on southern Mississippi, including 8 inches at Bogue Chitto. The amounts were not quite as amazing last night, but they were impressive, including four inches at Bogue Chitto. Bridges were icy in Jackson this morning, where the 0.7 inches was a record the date. 2.5 inches was measured in Hattiesburg.

HARD FREEZE TONIGHT: With mostly clear skies and light winds, temperatures will plunge into the middle 20s tonight with some lower 20s in the normally colder locations. This widespread, hard freeze could be damaging to tender plants.

SUNDAY AND BEYOND: Sunday will be sunny and cool with highs in the 50s as winds gradually shift around to the southeast. Clouds will thicken again Sunday night and showers could appear by Monday morning. Expect a few showers Monday with highs in the lower 50s as a weakening system passes by. A stronger system will spin up a more powerful low to our west by Tuesday. We will start out in sunshine, pushing the mercury into the lower 60s. Showers and storms will overspread the area Tuesday night. It appears that any chances for severe weather till be over South Alabama. We will monitor.

TRENDING TO COLDER: As that system passes, our winds will switch around to northwesterly, bringing in colder air. That will set the stage for a couple of days of colder conditions. Look for 20s by Thursday morning. I would not be surprised to see temperatures remain in the 40s Thursday. We get deep into the 20s Thursday night, but things begin to moderate Friday. Rain will return Saturday. Long range, another wet system around the 16th. We should see 3-4 inches of rain over the next two weeks.

WEATHERBRAINS: One of our most exciting shows yet is on tap for Monday night as legendary Oklahoma City television meteorologist Gary England joins the cast. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 1999: High surf from an intense storm near Alaska swept rocks and seawater into pavilions at Onekahakaha Beach near Hilo, Hawaii. Water reached 150 feet above the high-tide mark at Napili Beach and swept into the swimming pool and ground floor of a hotel there. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter.com @ wxhistorian.

...French Toast Warning...

I am blatantly borrowing the headline French Toast Warning from reader James Payton from Huntsville, who used it on a Facebook post about this morning's potential snowfall. James reports that he borrowed it from Huntsville TV meteorologist Brad Huffines. It refers to a weekend snowfall that doesn't involve school and business closings, power outages or massive traffic jams. It warns the public to make their way calmly to local grocery store to stock up on the ingredients for French toast. Don't forget the eggs, milk and bread…and of course, syrup.

SATURDAY SNOW: An upper level disturbance moving out of Arkansas and a wave of low pressure along the Gulf Coast spread snowfall from southeastern Texas trough Louisiana and Mississippi during the evening. The snowfall over Southeast Texas was the earliest in recorded history.

One inch fell at Houston's Intercontinental and Hobby. 2 inched fell in Bay City. 4 inches fell in Lane City and Boling. Accidents were reported in southern Mississippi along I-55 south of Jackson. 3-5 inches of snow fell south of I-20 in Central Mississippi. The snow spread into Alabama during the late evening. There will be a band of 1 inch snows from southwest to northeast across parts of Central Alabama with a dusting to the north and south. A few spots may see 2-3 inches of snow.

QUICK CLEARING: The snow will end quickly from the west this morning followed by rapid clearing. Temperatures this afternoon will rise to the middle 40s in most spots, which will spell a fairly quick demise for the snow. With mostly clear skies and a calming wind tonight, the mercury will fall into the middle 20s on average, with a few lower 20s in normally colder spots. This will give a widespread freeze. Sunday should be sunny and cool, with highs in the 50s.

RAIN AND STORMS NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels will already be on the increase Sunday night, with showers possible by Monday morning. Lows will be in the upper 30s and highs Monday around 54. Rain will become likely during the day Tuesday, lasting into Tuesday night. There could be some storms involved Tuesday night, along with heavy rain. Wednesday will be blustery and colder. Rain could return as early as late Thursday night again wit another decent rain event for Friday.

WEATHERBRAINS: Episode 201 was a blockbuster. Famed storm chaser Roger Hill was a fascinating interview. He told about his closest call while chasing, the influence that the infamous Topeka tornado from 1966 had on his interest in weather and on whether storm chasing will eventually be regulated. This week, legendary Oklahoma City television meteorologist Gary England will join the panel. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1886: Parts of Alabama recorded its greatest snowfall ever. As a low pressure system moved along the Glf Coast, snowfalls of 12-16 inches fell across South Central Alabama and 17-20 inches across northern sections of the state. Measurable snow was recorded even at the coast. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Alabama Weather Is Active...

DECEMBER STARTING VERY ACTIVE: We have a rather complicated weather situation affecting our area today and extending into Saturday. It is a bit unusual because it is early to have snow in our forecast, although it has happened in past history as early as late November.

Lots of weather problems all across the Southern USA today from Texas to Florida. An active low-pressure area continues to deepen over the NW Gulf of Mexico. After it moves inland, it will speed north eastward to the Mid-Atlantic Coast Saturday. So, we ask, what does this mean for Alabama? It means a risk of some rain changing over to snow tonight in parts of the state. This does not look like a major snowstorm. However, part of SW Alabama, places like Washington County, could possibly get 3 inches of snow. In North and Central Alabama, the snow will not arrive until late tonight, even possibly after midnight. We expect very little snow over the NW third of the state. In the Birmingham metro area, the snow should not arrive until toward midnight and ending Saturday morning.

HOW MUCH SNOW: We have looked at raw weather data until our eyes look like a street map. We have come up with this: accumulations in this part of Alabama ranging from a dusting to possibly 1 inch. The soil is still relatively warm, so if that 1 inch does occur, it will be mainly over grassy areas and on roofs, etc. Whatever happens, the snow should get away quickly Saturday morning as temperatures go for the 40s and the sun comes out. Colder air will continue to move into our area from the NW and by Sunday morning we should see some of our coldest temperatures this season. We are shooting for 26 as an average across North/Central Alabama. Some cold spots up in NE Alabama could take a shot at 22.

OUR NEXT PRECIPITATION: At least we will have a mostly sunny day Sunday, but clouds will increase at night and more rain will move into our area on Monday. There is also a good chance of showers on Tuesday and those should become more numerous Tuesday night. That combined rain event on Monday and Tuesday and Tuesday night may give us between 1.50 and 2.00 inches of additional rain, which we do not exactly need.

GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS: Good time to go if you love snow. In the Gatlinburg area, a storm total of 3-6 inches of new snow is expected tonight and Saturday.

ROAMING: The city of Houston was white with snow today and a Winter Storm Warning was posted for them and SE Texas where 2-4 inches was possible. Some fairly good amounts also expected over parts of Central Louisiana and South Mississippi. The coldest temperature in the nation this morning was 18 below at Big Piney, Wyoming and 21 below at Nuiqsut, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I often like to take my snack or even my meal and sit on the couch to eat. Little Miss Molly now jumps on the couch and puts both of her front feet on my knee and starts licking her lips and smacking. The majority owner still has me under an executive order not allowing any human food for the little girl. Howsomever, I saw her sneaking a few little pieces of popcorn to Molly one night. I wish I could treat her too. Life goes on.

...Some Snow As The Weekend Begins...

COLD DECEMBER WEEKEND: Temperatures will remain well below seasonal averages today and tomorrow; our average high today is 59 degrees, but most communities won't get out of the 40s again with a generally cloudy sky. To the west, a strong upper air wave will spin up a surface low in the Gulf Of Mexico late tonight, and promises to bring the risk of snow flakes to part of Alabama tomorrow morning. We will know that forecasting winter weather in Alabama is always problematic, but here is our expected scenario…

WHEN? The best chance of snow for Central Alabama will come from 1:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.

WHERE? While snow flurries are possible as far north as the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama, the best mix of cold air and moisture will come generally in the area from Birmingham south to Greenville, or south of I-20 and north of Alabama 10. Below Greenville, some sleet or snow flakes could mix with the rain over far South Alabama.

HOW MUCH? We expect a dusting, to around one inch in the central part of the state, mainly on grassy areas. A few isolated two inch amounts are not out of the question across the higher terrain of East-Central Alabama. Many communities won't get enough snow to make a snowman, or get a good snowball fight fired up. We certainly do not expect this to be a major winter storm for Alabama.

WHAT ABOUT DRIVING CONDITIONS? With relatively warm soil temperatures, we figure most roads will be wet, and no major travel problems are expected. Temperatures will be generally in the 33 to 35 degree range as the snow falls, but where temperatures can drop to freezing, a few icy spots on bridges are possible.

REST OF THE WEEKEND: The sky will become partly sunny tomorrow afternoon as the light snow moves out of Alabama. Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 40s tomorrow, and we should be in the 24 to 29 degree range by daybreak Sunday with a clear sky and light wind. Sunday will be mostly sunny with a high in the low to mid 50s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Bundle up for today and tonight's Super 6 high school championship games at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. Temperatures this afternoon will be in the 45 to 49 degree range, dropping into the low 40s tonight for the Hoover-Prattville 6A game. The sky will be mostly cloudy, but no precipitation is expected.

NEXT WEEK: Clouds will return Sunday night, and some light rain is possible at times Monday and Tuesday. The rain should be more widespread Tuesday night into Wednesday, along with the possibility of a few strong thunderstorms as a robust upper trough approaches Alabama from the west. Colder and drier air will return by Thursday.

...Dealing With Early Winter...

SOME SNOW IN OUR PICTURE: All of us have been pondering the weather all day and we have come up with this scenario: Not sealed in stone by any means since it is a developing situation. Some of our weather models are at war with each other:

FRIDAY: Breezy and cold with high in the 40s. No precipitation

except possibly some light snow late at night. Could even be past midnight. Low for Friday night and early Saturday morning 31. Brisk north winds.

SATURDAY: Occasional snow through most of the morning and ending at some point in the afternoon. Light accumulations. For BHM Metro best estimate is about 1/2 to one inch. Melting will start soon. We expect the Saturday morning low at 31 but an afternoon high of 43. The ground is not very cold, in fact soil temperatures this morning across Central Alabama were in the 52-55 range. It is unlikely that local travel problems will develop, however, if we do get a full inch, could be some temporary slick spots on bridges and overpasses. The snow will taper off with very little over North Alabama. There is the
possibility of 2 to 3 inch amounts over the south third of the state.

We should point out that all of this weather excitement is due to another low-pressure area that will develop over the Gulf of Mexico. If it tracks too far south, it could pull our moisture supply southward and cut down on the chances of snow. We do not think that will happen.

SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY: Clear and colder with a widespread freeze. Low Sunday morning as cold as 26. A Sunday afternoon warm up with high near 55.

PROWLING OTHER PLACES: Interesting to note that Houston is expecting 1 to 2 inches of snow with as much as 3 inches at Beaumont, Texas and Lake Charles, Louisiana. Even New Orleans will get at least some snow…Syracuse has been in a snow drought with only ½ inch so far this season…USA extremes in the last 24 hours included 87 at Ft. Pierce and Vero Beach, Florida yesterday and 19 below in Yellowstone Park this morning. That was 1 degree colder than the low for Alaska, which was 18 below at Northway…it is interesting to note (at least to me) that on December 4, 1972, Livingston, Montana saw their temperature nosedive from 52 to 18 in only 20 minutes. That is what we used to call a Cold Wave Warning. I miss those…lots of rain east and NE of Alabama yesterday, including over 3 inches at Columbus, Georgia and Tallahassee and over 2 inches at Richmond and Raleigh.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: There may be still some high school play off games Friday night. Not very comfortable with temperatures in the mid 40s at kick off and upper 30s at the final whistle.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I often wonder what Little Miss Molly thinks of me. I came home from Wednesday night church last evening and she almost took me down. She acted like I had been gone a week and she was so glad to see me. She was dancing around and around on the tile floor in the kitchen and it sounded like a person tap dancing. She even walked on her hind legs toward me holding her front paws for me to pick her up. Of course, I did, because she owns me. I gave her a long belly rub and I truly believe that she smiled at me, although I understand that dogs do not smile. Life goes on.

...Snow Saturday?...

SNOW FLAKES SATURDAY? Before we get to the big question, let's talk about weather in the shorter term. Chilly air will cover Alabama today and tomorrow; we don't expect to get out of the 40s with a cool breeze and a generally cloudy sky. The sun could peek out at times, but a persistent southwest flow aloft will keep clouds in place much of the time. And, we don't expect any significant precipitation through tomorrow despite the clouds.

TO THE WEST: A strong disturbance aloft will rotate through the big upper trough covering the eastern half of the nation, and will help to generate a surface wave of low pressure on the Polar front in the Gulf of Mexico Friday night. This will spread rain into the Gulf Coast region, and will set the stage for a few snow flakes over the interior sections of Alabama and other Southeast U.S. states after midnight Friday night and into Saturday morning.

We all know forecasting snow is a very difficult task here in our state, but confidence is fairly high that we will see at least a few snow flurries. While the deeper moisture will be over far South Alabama, it does appear that we could see enough light snow for a dusting, or maybe even some light accumulation Saturday morning (one inch or so), especially over the East-Central counties. But, the ground is relatively warm, and with surface temperatures Saturday morning expected to be just above freezing, we don't anticipate any serious or widespread travel problems at this time. The main window for light snow will come from about 3:00 a.m until 10:00 a.m. Saturday. And, the best chance of that snow will be north of a line from Thomasville to Greenville to Phenix City, and south of a line from Hamilton to Scottsboro. As always, this forecast is subject to change, so stay tuned.

THE REST OF THE WEEKEND: The sky becomes partly sunny Saturday afternoon as the storm system rolls to the northeast, but temperatures will stay cold with a high only in the low to mid 40s. Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny with a high around 50. Then, next week, some light rain is possible Monday and Tuesday, followed by a more significant rain event by Tuesday night and Wednesday.

TRAVEL WEATHER: Lots of people headed to Atlanta for the SEC Championship game Saturday… their weather will be very similar to ours. Cold and dry tomorrow and tomorrow night, but some light snow or snow flurries are likely during the day Saturday. For now we won't expect any travel issues in the Atlanta metro. We will guarantee dry weather for the Alabama/Florida game with light wind and about 70 degrees at kickoff. Those domes sure make forecasting easier…

WET WEDNESDAY: Birmingham's rain total was 1.62", bringing the total for 2009 to 67.18", giving us a whopping surplus of 17.36" for the year!

...A Stormy Day...

DECEMBER ACTING LIKE DECEMBER: If you were out and about today, the weather certainly did not act like July. December can be quite stormy and blustery which was the case today.

Blame most of it on a low-pressure area that developed over the north Gulf of Mexico. It finally moved inland at midmorning and picked up speed. This afternoon the center was near Nashville.

All of Alabama has received rain in the last 24 hours and generally speaking, it was a real soaking. I doubt if there is a single square foot of soil in Alabama that looks like it is suffering from a drought. Here are just a few rain totals:

2.06 Mobile

2.49 Robertsdale

2.50 Brewton

1.61 Birmingham Airport

1.73 Greystone Farms

We are getting some amazing numbers when it comes to rain surplus. A case in point is Birmingham Airport. The 1.61 inches of rain overnight swelled the total for the year to 67.17 inches. That is a surplus of 17.50 inches. A number of other places around the state have numbers just as impressive. At Greystone Farms in North Shelby County, 68.80 inches of rain has fallen this year.

For a time this morning, a Tornado Watch was in effect for extreme South Alabama. During that Watch, the Duke Field Fire Department at Eglin Air Force Base in NW Florida reported a tornado on the ground 3 miles SE of Crestview. We also had a report of a few trees uprooted in NE Alabama due to straight-line winds. When the ground is so soft from so much rain, it is relatively easy.

This afternoon, almost all of the rain had shifted into Georgia and South Carolina, although a short line of storms had formed over NE Alabama. We could still have a few evening showers as it turns breezy and colder with a low by morning of around 39. Thursday should have more clouds than sun with temperatures struggling to get out of the mid and upper 40s. On Friday, the weather will stay cold and there is a slight chance of some snow flurries late Friday night extending into Saturday morning. We believe it will only be flurries. A worse case scenario would be a slight dusting in the higher terrain of NE Alabama. Finally, some sunshine returns on Sunday.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 3 inches of snow on the ground today at Jacksboro, Texas and some snow even in the Ft. Worth/Dallas area, but not enough to really measure…New Orleans got 3.17 inches of rain overnight…warmest in the country yesterday was 83 in West Kendall, Florida…cold spots this morning included 17 below in Yellowstone National Park and 14 below at Atqasuk, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly does not like the rain, but she loves to wade in water like a little boy. There were plenty of places for her to do that this morning on our early morning walk. When she does walk in the rain, when she gets back home, she wallows all over the carpet drying to use it as a towel to dry off. I sure do laugh at her and she looks at me funny. Life goes on.

...Wet and Breezy Today; Colder Tomorrow...

WET IS THE WORD: Rain continues to fall over much of Alabama this morning in response to a deepening surface low moving inland from the Gulf of Mexico. The low will move to a point near Huntsville by early afternoon, and accordingly much of the heavier rain will be east of Alabama by mid-afternoon. We are projecting storm totals of 1 to 2 inches for North-Central Alabama; the heavier totals should be over the southern half of the state, where some spots could see 3 to 4 inches of rain, and a flash flood watch remains in effect for today. A few severe thunderstorms are possible this morning over the southeast part of the state, with the risk including cities like Dothan, Ozark, and Abbeville. The most significant severe weather risk with this system will be over North Florida, South Georgia, and the eastern part of the Carolinas, where a few isolated tornadoes are possible. We shouldn't have any severe weather issues up here with cool and stable air in place.

TURNING COLDER: As the rain moves out late today, a surge of cold air moves into the state tomorrow and Friday. More than likely we won't get out of the mid 40s both days with lingering clouds and a chilly north breeze.

SNOW FLAKES? Another wave of low pressure is forecast to develop in the Gulf of Mexico Friday, and will spread some moisture up into
Alabama Friday night and Saturday morning. While the deepest moisture will remain well to the south, we could very well see a few light snow flurries around here in the general time period from midnight Friday night through 10:00 a.m. Saturday. Moisture looks very limited, so they are not expected to pose any problems at this time.

WEEKEND FORECAST: The sky should become mostly sunny Saturday afternoon as the new surface low moves to the northeast, but temperatures will remain cool with a high in the 45 to 48 degree range. Looks now like our coldest morning will come early Sunday when temperatures are expected to drop into the 28 to 32 degree range. Then, with a partly to mostly sunny sky Sunday, we will climb into the mid 50s around here. Clouds will then return Sunday night, and some rain is likely by Monday afternoon of next week.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Two to four inches of snow was reported on the ground around El Paso, Texas yesterday morning as their early winter storm finally moved out. Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Northway, Alaska with 14 degrees below zero. The low at West Yellowstone, Montana was two below zero.

ON THIS DATE IN 1925: A very late season hurricane moved across the Florida peninsula then moved up the Atlantic coast, making landfall again at Cape Hatteras NC. Extensive damage was reported in Florida. Winds gusted to sake force along the Atlantic coast all the way to New England. A wind gust to 64 mph was reported at Atlantic City NJ.

...Plenty of Rain...

A GENUINE SOAKING: Another low-pressure area continued to develop over the NW Gulf of Mexico south of the Louisiana coast this afternoon. That low will be our main weather maker for at least the next 24 hours. The center of the low should be over South Mississippi by daybreak Wednesday. It will be pulling a warm front northward into South Alabama at that time. By Wednesday evening, the warm front will be all the way through Alabama and we will have another cold front approaching from the west.

So, what does all of this complicated maneuvering mean for people in Alabama. It means a genuine soaking starting tonight. Rain was already widespread across South Louisiana and South Mississippi and rain had spread northward to cover most of the south half of Alabama. The track of the low-pressure area will determine how much rain we get and what kind of weather. This low is expected to move NE fairly rapidly—maybe to Kentucky by nightfall Wednesday. Rain will continue to overspread the rest of North Alabama this evening and become widespread overnight. By daybreak, much of Central Alabama, including the Tuscaloosa/Birmingham/Anniston area will likely have over an inch in the bucket. An additional 2 inches of rain is possible for tomorrow. There will also be a few thunderstorms in the mix. We believe that any risk of severe thunderstorms will remain east and SE of our area. There will still be some rain in progress after dark tomorrow, but it should be ending.

Clouds will probably hang tough on Thursday. It will be breezy and a lot colder with high temperatures struggling to get out of the mid 40s. We look for mostly cloudy weather on Friday. By late in the day, some more light rain will be spreading up from the Gulf. Meanwhile, colder air will be moving in Friday night and the upper air temperature profile gives a possibility of a few snow flurries over NE and East/Central Alabama after midnight Friday night. Finally, clearing and cold weather can be expected on Saturday.

We believe our lowest temperatures will come Saturday morning with lows in the 26-28 degree range and maybe a few degrees colder in the NE Alabama valleys.

FLASH FLOOD PROBLEMS: The rain will be heavy enough to cause some localized flooding—even in the Birmingham area, but down south the National Weather Service has a Flash Flood Watch for tonight and tomorrow for much of the south half of the state.

SEVERE WEATHER: The Storm Prediction Center has a Slight Risk for the remainder of today and tonight in places like New Orleans, Biloxi, Mobile and Pensacola. For tomorrow, the Slight Risk expands to affect SE and East/Central Alabama and most of Florida.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Third morning in a row that my little 9-pound nuisance, sometimes known as Little Miss Molly, had me out walking before the first coffee had reached the bottom of my tummy. We were amazed the moment we stepped out the back door to hear a crow talking at the top of its voice. Seconds later a middle-aged cardinal came out of the hedgerow and flew right over Molly. Those were the first birds we have seen all week. We had our heaviest frost so far this season, so after we walked halfway on the track, she voluntarily turned around and headed back home where she knew a Milkbone treat would be waiting. She immediately went to the patch of sun near the front door for her usual sunbath. A creature of habit. Life goes on.

...Big Soaking Late Tonight and Tomorrow...

ACTIVE WEATHER: Lots of weather changes in the days ahead, but today promises to be a dry day with seasonal temperatures. We will begin the day with a sunny sky, followed by increasing clouds this afternoon. Most communities will see a high around 60 this afternoon, right at the average high for the first day of December. But, to the west, a major wet weather system is poised to give Alabama another wet-down.

BIG SOAKING: The rain should begin late tonight, becoming widespread after midnight. Then tomorrow, as a surface low moves from near Jackson to Huntsville, it will be a windy and wet day with rain and a few thunderstorms. The rain could be heavy at times; we are projecting rain amounts of 2 inches for much of North and Central Alabama. For now we don't expect any serious flooding issues since the ground is not saturated, but a few localized problems are not out of the question.

The greatest chance of severe thunderstorms in Alabama tomorrow will be mainly over the southeast counties of the state, generally south of a line from Mobile to Montgomery to Lafayette. A few storms down that way could produce hail and damaging winds. An isolated tornado is possible as well. The rain will begin to taper off tomorrow afternoon as the low moves northeast.

BIG CHILL: The coldest air so far this season will follow the rain on Thursday and Friday. Thursday looks like a raw, blustery day with lingering clouds, a chilly north wind, and temperatures struggling to reach the mid 40s. Friday could be even colder with a mix of sun and clouds. Then, a strong disturbance aloft could squeeze out a few snow flurries across Alabama Friday afternoon or Friday night, but the moisture will be very limited and they are not expected to be a big deal.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The weekend looks rain-free with a slow warming trend. The high Saturday will be in the upper 40s, followed by mid 50s on Sunday. Rain will likely return to the state on Monday of next week.

METEOROLOGICAL WINTER ARRIVES: We consider the winter season the calendar months of December, January, and February. In terms of astronomy, the winter solstice this year comes at 11:47 p.m. on December 21, which is generally speaking our "shortest day of the year" in terms of the number of daylight hours. The first half of December is still considered our fall tornado season, and it can turn very cold this time of the year. The low Christmas morning in 1983 was 2 degrees. On December 24, 1989, Birmingham dropped to 4 degrees above zero. On the other hand, the warmest temperature on record during December is 80 degrees, which was measured on December 7, 1951.

...The Weather Turns Active...

COLDEST SO FAR FRIDAY MORNING: As December approaches, we are not surprised to see the weather become more active. December can traditionally be a fairly wet month and it often brings our first significant freeze, although that can also happen some years in November.

Last night a southeast-moving cold front pushed a rather wide band of showers across the state. This afternoon most of those had shifted to South Alabama and it was turning noticeably cooler over the north. Rain amounts were quite variable. Samples:

0.73 Huntsville Airport
0.85 Muscle Shoals
0.51 Clay/Pinson (Womack Road)
0.06 Birmingham Airport

Not counting the rain last night, it still amazes me that Scrougeout in NE Etowah County has received 74.95 inches of rain this year with 87.78 inches in the last 12 months dating back to this date last year. At Coker in Tuscaloosa County, the 12-month total stands at 73.85 inches. Mind you, in a typical year it would be more like 52 inches.

THE REST OF THIS WEEK: Using as few words as possible, morning sunshine Tuesday, but more clouds late and more rain by late at night. We are looking for a big rain event on Wednesday. It will be widespread and heavy at times along with a few thunderstorms. Our friend, the Gulf of Mexico, has a hand in this as a low-pressure area will form over the North Gulf and move up into SW Alabama and possibly may track across the Birmingham area. Those systems almost overdosed with moist air. Thursday should be blustery and colder and you will need a coat all day with highs only in the 40s. We are looking for our coldest weather so far this season when you get up Friday morning. A lot of places will have mid 20s with the valleys a few degrees colder. By Saturday morning, a high-pressure area will be centered across Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and it could be a few degrees colder.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 87 at McAllen, Texas was the warmest in the USA Sunday…cold spots this morning included an even zero at Stanley, Idaho…in Alaska, it was 17 below at Ft. Yukon…Barrow was dealing with weather on the 8s with a high of 8 above and a low this morning of 8 below…we have a daily reader at Hunter Street Baptist Church that loves Whittier, Alaska. They have 11 inches of snow…the morning snow survey showed 13% of the lower 48 covered with snow compared to 21% a month ago…a couple of the heavier amounts included 202 inches at Squaw Flat, Idaho and 181 inches at Rabbit Ears, Colorado. I simply love those place names.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Wish you could have seen my Little Miss Molly Saturday when she made her first official visit to Pet Smart in Trussville. They welcome dogs to visit. Molly was astounded, scared—you name it. She kept looking back at me hoping I was there to protect her. Soon after, I was waiting in the car with Molly while the majority owner entered another shop. A guy drove up and parked next to us with a big cat in his arms. Molly tried her best to jump out the window and chase that cat. No luck. Life goes on.

...Rain To Move Out; Briefly...

A cold front is pushing southeastward into Alabama this morning. A large area of showers is associated with the front. The showers will end from the west later this morning. Our winds will shift around to westerly and northwesterly and freshen to about 6-12 mph this afternoon. Temperatures will remain in the middle 50 until early afternoon and then fall into the 40s by dinner. Skies will clear during the evening and dewpoints will fall as drier air enters the state. Overnight lows will drop into the middle 30s overnight.

SHORT RESPITE FROM THE RAIN TUESDAY: You will wake to clear skies Tuesday morning. Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, because it won't last long. Clouds will be on the increase by afternoon, and it will be cloudy by dark. The quick change will be courtesy of a potent low pressure system that will develop off Brownsville, Texas by Tuesday morning and move to the Louisiana coast by Tuesday night. Rain will spread back into the state Tuesday night, and it will become quite breezy. Winds will increase to 10-20 mph out of the east. The low will probably track right up I-59, exiting into Georgia Wednesday night. To the west of the low, rain will fall intermittently with continued gusty winds. Rainfall will average around an inch. To the southeast of the track, rainfall will be heavier and steadier, totaling 2-4 inches in spots. The rain will end Wednesday night, although it could persist and possibly change over to a few flurries early Thursday morning.

SHARP CHANGE TO COLDER: Thursday will be miserable with cloudy skies, a few sprinkles of light rain, a strong northwest wind and temperatures falling through the 40s. Expect a pretty good freeze Thursday night with lows dropping into upper 20s. Friday should be partly cloudy and cool with highs in the upper 40s. Readings will drop into the middle and upper 20s Saturday morning.

WEEKEND AND BEYOND: A nice southerly flow will redevelop on Saturday, allowing for highs to rise to near 60F. Rain will spread into Alabama on Sunday night. Next Monday and Tuesday look really wet with the potential for 3-4 more inches of rain.

WEATHERBRAINS: Busy show tonight, with guest WeatherBrain Roger Hill, one of America's premiere stormchasers. Kevin Selle will interview Dr. Kris Wilson of t he University of Texas about the AMS Weathercasters survey on climate change. Next week, legendary Oklahoma City television meteorologist Gary England will join the show. Follow our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ST. ANDREW'S DAY EVE: November 30 is St. Andrew's Day eve. According to Eastern European weather folklore, if you fill a glass to the brim with water on this evening and let it stand all night on the grass, you will be able to foretell a wet or dry year to come. If any water has spilled the next morning, expect a wet year to come. Otherwise, it will be dry. Residents of MacLeod Harbor AK probably were trembling on this St. Andrew's Day Eve in 1963. They had just completed an amazing month with 70.99 inches during the month. This is a state record for any month of the year.

...Rain Returning...

Regional radars late on this Sunday morning show a batch of showers sliding eastward across Northern Mississippi and western Tennessee. The showers produced just under a quarter inch of rain at Memphis. At 11 o'clock, it was raining in Greenwood, Mississippi, where 0.07 inches had fallen in an hour. These showers will reach Northwestern Alabama this afternoon, affecting areas mainly from Lamar and Fayette Counties northeastward to Huntsville. The main rain will come later tonight, as moisture pooling ahead of a trough and surface front to the west of Alabama moves eastward. Showers will become likely during the overnight hours, lasting into Monday morning. In the I-59 corridor, it looks like the best chance for rain will come between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m. Rainfall amounts should average about a third of an inch. Highs this afternoon will be in the middle 60s. Lows tonight will drop to around 50 degrees.

THAT'S ROUND ONE: Our winds will veer to northwesterly during the day on Monday, allowing drier and cooler air to spread into Alabama. Monday night promises to be on the chilly side, with lows in the middle 30s. There could be some patchy dense fog Monday night as skies quickly become clear and allow the low level moisture from the wet ground to condense. Tuesday looks like a pleasant late fall day with partly cloudy skies and highs in the 60 degree range. But things will already be changing again…

ROUND TWO: By lunchtime Tuesday, a potent low pressure system will be moving northeastward along the Texas coast. Our winds will pick up out of the east during the evening and rain will overspread Central sections of the state. A band of heavy rain will set up to the east of the track of the low, which should be right along I-59. It will become quite windy overnight, with winds averaging 12-22 mph. It looks like The I-59 corridor should see one to inches of rain, with 2-5 inches over South Central and Southeast Alabama. Much colder air will spread into the state behind the departing low. Thursday looks like it will be a miserable, blustery day with falling temperatures in the 40s, gusty northwest winds and some light rain. There could be a brief changeover to light snow over extreme Northeast Alabama.

WEATHERBRAINS: A busy show coming up tonight. Storm chaser Roger Hill will talk about his passion for the monster storms. Dr. Kris Wilson will talk about the AMS Television Weathercaster climate change survey. And from across the pond, BBC weather presenter Hannah Bayman will discuss the terrible flooding that struck Great Britain a couple of weeks ago. Listen to the show at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: A patch of dense fog on the New Jersey turnpike near Camden caused a chain reaction accident during morning rush hour. A truck, carrying liquid propane, slowed when it encountered the fog and was struck from behind by a tractor trailer. Sixteen cars piled into the wreckage and a massive fire ensued, completely destroying ten of the cars. A total of six people died, and twenty were sent to hospitals. Both the north and southbound lanes of the superhighway were closed for hours as the cleanup and investigation were performed.

...Rain To Return...

Clouds and a warming, moistening airmass kept this morning's lows several degrees above those of yesterday morning. Readings averaged around 40 degrees. Those clouds were associated with a passing upper level disturbance. Behind the disturbance, there will be a little more sunshine today, allowing afternoon highs to reach the middle 60s. But clouds will be thickening again as we go through the day ahead of our next storm system.

RAIN TO RETURN: A strong upper trough dropping trough the Midwest will bring a chance of showers to Alabama overnight tonight into Monday. The models have backed off on expected rainfall amounts, with about a third of an inch expected between now and noon Monday. Northerly winds behind the frontal system will allow for lows in the 30s Tuesday morning. Tuesday looks like a nice day with highs near 60 and a good bit of sunshine.

ROUND TWO OF RAIN: A developing low in the western Gulf will move northeast and spread clouds and rain back into Alabama Tuesday night. It will become breezy also, as the low passes directly across the area on Wednesday. Rainfall amounts could be generous, with 1-2 inches expected across Central Alabama. Over five inches could fall over South Alabama.

ALL TIME RECORD TROPICAL CYCLONE? Supertyphoon Nida has been a doozy. The incredible storm has been moving over the Philippine Sea, northwest of the Marianna Islands. It may have become the deepest tropical cyclone in world history just before midnight Universal Time on Thursday when satellite estimates placed the central pressure at 869.3 millibars. The estimated winds at that time were 164 knots, or nearly 190 mph. The figures are estimates because there are no recon flights into storms in the western Pacific. If the 869.3 millibar reading is accurate, it would make Nida stronger than 1979's Supertyphoon Tip.

WEATHERBRAINS: I will be chatting with BBC Look North Weather Presenter Hannah Bayman this morning for a report of the record rains and catastrophic flooding that occurred last week in Cumbria in Great Britain. Hannah will join us on WeatherBrains on January 5th for a good look at British weather. Look for a big guest announcement this afternoon on our Twitter account: @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the coast of the island of Hawaii produced a tsunami that killed 2 campers and injured another 19 at Halape Park. The earthquake caused rocks to be loosened from a hillside above the park, and this caused the campers to move to a coconut grove closer to the ocean. The first tsunami-generated wave was only 1.5 meters high, but the second was 7.9 meters and swept many of the campers away. By the time local authorities sounded the tsunami warning sirens, the wave had already struck. As in most cases of locally generated tsunamis, the best warning signal is the earthquake itself.
