...Rain To Return...
Clouds and a warming, moistening airmass kept this morning's lows several degrees above those of yesterday morning. Readings averaged around 40 degrees. Those clouds were associated with a passing upper level disturbance. Behind the disturbance, there will be a little more sunshine today, allowing afternoon highs to reach the middle 60s. But clouds will be thickening again as we go through the day ahead of our next storm system.
RAIN TO RETURN: A strong upper trough dropping trough the Midwest will bring a chance of showers to Alabama overnight tonight into Monday. The models have backed off on expected rainfall amounts, with about a third of an inch expected between now and noon Monday. Northerly winds behind the frontal system will allow for lows in the 30s Tuesday morning. Tuesday looks like a nice day with highs near 60 and a good bit of sunshine.
ROUND TWO OF RAIN: A developing low in the western Gulf will move northeast and spread clouds and rain back into Alabama Tuesday night. It will become breezy also, as the low passes directly across the area on Wednesday. Rainfall amounts could be generous, with 1-2 inches expected across Central Alabama. Over five inches could fall over South Alabama.
ALL TIME RECORD TROPICAL CYCLONE? Supertyphoon Nida has been a doozy. The incredible storm has been moving over the Philippine Sea, northwest of the Marianna Islands. It may have become the deepest tropical cyclone in world history just before midnight Universal Time on Thursday when satellite estimates placed the central pressure at 869.3 millibars. The estimated winds at that time were 164 knots, or nearly 190 mph. The figures are estimates because there are no recon flights into storms in the western Pacific. If the 869.3 millibar reading is accurate, it would make Nida stronger than 1979's Supertyphoon Tip.
WEATHERBRAINS: I will be chatting with BBC Look North Weather Presenter Hannah Bayman this morning for a report of the record rains and catastrophic flooding that occurred last week in Cumbria in Great Britain. Hannah will join us on WeatherBrains on January 5th for a good look at British weather. Look for a big guest announcement this afternoon on our Twitter account: @weatherbrains.
ON THIS DATE IN 1975: A magnitude 7.2 earthquake off the coast of the island of Hawaii produced a tsunami that killed 2 campers and injured another 19 at Halape Park. The earthquake caused rocks to be loosened from a hillside above the park, and this caused the campers to move to a coconut grove closer to the ocean. The first tsunami-generated wave was only 1.5 meters high, but the second was 7.9 meters and swept many of the campers away. By the time local authorities sounded the tsunami warning sirens, the wave had already struck. As in most cases of locally generated tsunamis, the best warning signal is the earthquake itself.
