...Nice Weekend To Continue...

Beautiful blue skies greeted the day across Central Alabama on this
Saturday morning. For the second straight week, low temperatures were
generally in the 50s across the area. In fact, low this morning were
generally a couple of degrees cooler than last Saturday morning.
Lows in the Tennessee Valley ranged from 50F at Meridianville to 51F
at Vinemont/Cullman to 52F at Decatur. Central Alabama readings
ranged from 54F at Pinson to 56F at Birmingham to 58F at Anniston.

SUNNY AND WARM: That's our forecast for today and Sunday. Some
moisture surging into East Alabama around a low over southeastern
Georgia was giving mostly cloudy skies to areas around Alex City and
Auburn. With fairly dry air in place, temperatures will warm quickly
in the middle and upper 80s today and to a couple of degrees warmer
than that tomorrow.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday starts the week off nice, with lots of
sunshine and warm temperatures continuing. Highs will top out around
90F. By Tuesday, disturbances passing to our north will buckle the
upper flow over Alabama just a tad. This will allow a cool front to
come tantalizingly close to the northern border of the state. This
will trigger a few showers and storms over the area, mainly to the
north. The combination of passing disturbances and this boundary will
keep showers and storms in the forecast through Friday. Saturday
looks like it might be dry, and then look for a backdoor cold front to
approach from the northeast.

WINTRY WEATHER: A low pressure trough over southern Canada was
bringing some late season winter weather to parts of the Montana
Rockies today. Winter weather advisories are in effect for places
like Cut Bank and Browning. Total snowfall amounts are expected to
reach 5-10 inches in the mountains and 1-4 inches across lower
elevation areas. How about that?

BEACH WEATHER: Lots of folks heading to the beautiful beaches of
Alabama and Northwest Florida right now in order to get a jump on
summer. The weather will cooperate until at least midweek. And as I
always say, a rainy day at the beach beats just about any other day
anywhere else. Expect lots of sunshine through Tuesday. Highs will
be in the upper 80s for the most part. Water temperatures are around
80.

TROPICS: The southwestern Caribbean will be the place to look for
potential tropical cyclone development over the next 5 days. I think
by midweek, we will see a tropical low develop there and track
northward toward Cuba and the Bahamas. Last night, the GFS came in
with a solution that moves toward the southern Gulf, but I think the
more likely track is to the northeast.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Five people drowned and dozens had to be
rescued from rough Gulf of Mexico waters during a two day period of
rip currents along the Northwest Florida coast. The rip currents were
caused by strong onshore winds that resulted from the combined effects
of strong high pressure and the remnants of Tropical Storm Allison
that had moved ashore in Texas the day before. The rough surf was
exacerbated by strong swells generated by Allison. Conditions became
so bad that storm warning sirens were sounded at Pensacola Beach
Victims included a 46 year old Tennessee man who went into the water
to rescue his daughters and a 48 year old man who was swimming with
his son.

...Another Nice Weekend...

It's déjà vu all over again, as Yogi Berra used to say. Today's hour
by hour forecast is almost a carbon copy of last Saturday's.
Temperature. Sky condition. Dewpoint. Wind. All extremely close.
Luckily, it's nice weather.

COMFORTABLE START: Many locations across the area dropped into the
upper 50s overnight. With the dry air, temperatures will warm quickly
into the 80s by late this morning. Highs today will top off in the
middle to upper 80s under mostly sunny skies.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Sunday looks like another good looking day. Skies
will be mostly sunny again. Temperatures will be a few degrees
warmer, in the upper 80s to near 90.

A NEW WORK WEEK: It looks like dry weather will continue through
Monday across Central Alabama. There will be enough moisture by
Tuesday to scare up a few widely scattered afternoon showers and
storms as a disturbance passes by to our north. An approaching
frontal system combined with a stronger approaching disturbance will
trigger a better chance of showers and storms on Wednesday.
Additional disturbances will keep rain chances in the forecast through
the end of the week. Shower and storm chances will be around for
Saturday, but should begin to decrease by Sunday and into the
following week.

80.

WEATHERBRAINS: I hope that you are downloading and listening to the
weekly netcast that's all about weather. This past week's episode
(number 175) features a great interview with Science Journalist Jack
Williams. Jack was the long time editor of the USA TODAY's innovative
weather page. He also is the author of the AMS Weather Book: The
Ultimate Guides to America's Weather. This week's episode will be
recorded Sunday night. This week's featured WeatherBrain will be Jim
Stefkovich, the Meteorologist at the National Weather Service
Birmingham. The panel and Jim will debate both sides of the question:
"Are there too many tornado warnings." Meteorologist Tim Vasquez also
gives some insight into the Air France disaster.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The PGA Memorial Tournament at Muirfield in
Dublin, Ohio is one of the biggest events on the tour. It has been
affected by weather before, but never by bugs. Big bugs. Lots of
them. The gigantic crop of ugly, loud bugs that emerges every
seventeen years was droning out most other sounds across the Ohio
Valley and Mid-Atlantic region. Players were concerned that they
might make a bad shot if one of the huge, ugly bugs buzzed them.
Fortunately, the insects were not a factor in the outcome of the
tournament. They just provided loud background roar that marshals
could not silence.

...The Alabama Story...

AT LEAST THREE DRY DAYS AHEAD: Rain amounts across Alabama in the
last 24 hours were extremely variable with a lot of places getting
none and other communities having flash flood problems. All that is
left over this afternoon are some diminishing showers over extreme SE
Alabama. They should be out of here by dark. Before we talk about
better weather ahead, let us give you a few sample rain amounts in the
last 24 hours:

4.75 in Evergreen
1.70 Highland Home
2.00 Jasper
1.16 Hamilton
2.01 Ider
2.61 Russellville Airport
2.33 Hytop (Jackson County)

The so-called cool front (really we should just call it a drier front)
has pushed through most of the state, so clearing will take place this
evening. It was already clear over the extreme northwest. Now we can
look forward to at least three days of mostly sunny weather. We expect
little or no risk of showers until Tuesday of next week.

If you get up at 5:00 a.m., like I will tomorrow morning, it will feel
great with about 58 degrees. As we have mentioned 25 zillion times,
dry air cools and heats faster, so we will have 90-degree heat in the
afternoon Sunday and Monday, but the humidity will be acceptable.
BIRMINGHAM: We had our first 90 degrees for 2009 Tuesday. That is the
average high for early July. We are still ahead of average in the rain
department by 8/10 of an inch, but it is dwindling rather quickly.
Even so, Lake Purdy is at full pool and so is Inland Lake—two of the
key water supplies for the area.

AT THE BEACH: Some of the nicest you can expect along the coast for
early June. Four days of mostly sunshine through Tuesday. The weather
should be dry, lower humidity on Saturday and little or no chance of a
shower or storm until about Tuesday and only few at that time. Highs
mostly in the upper 80s. The water temperature was 80 today at the
Mobile Coast Guard Station and also off Panama City and 79 off Orange
Beach and Pensacola Bay.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The Tropics, meaning the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf
of Mexico, are quiet. An update on the lady killed by lightning at
Fontana, California Wednesday. She was walking along the sidewalk when
she was struck by lightning and killed. It blew out the bottoms of her
shoes and hurled some of her clothing 30 feet. There were thousands of
lightning strikes in Southern California during that storm event. Only
1% of the lower 48 with a snow cover this morning, however, up to ½
foot of new snow is forecast in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains west of
Reno. 109 in Casa Grande and Gila Bend, Arizona was the hottest
yesterday. Coldest this morning 31 at Saranac Lake, New York and 30 at
Barrow, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For the second day in a row, we scared
the daylights out of Molly. I had opened a 12-ounce can of delicious
and delectable Buffalo Rock at my desk and immediately knocked it
over. Fortunately, it did not get in the computer keys, but it got all
over me and flooded the area under my desk. I yelled real loud (no bad
words). Molly was sitting nearby and took off. Took a lot of paper
towels to soak it up. Little Miss Molly will have another weekend with
very little sleep. Our oldest granddaughter will have her little
babies here this weekend, ages 1 and 2. The living area will become a
beehive of activity lasting well into the night. Molly will spend much
of the weekend walking thorough the house trying to stay out of the
way. She will sleep long hours after the babies go back to
Russellville late Sunday. Life goes on.

...Drier Air Arrives This Afternoon...

NO RAIN THIS WEEKEND: Today will be a transitional day for Alabama
when it comes to weather; we will begin the day with clouds, and a few
showers generally along and east of I-65. Dry air will move into the
state as the day progresses, and we expect a gradual clearing trend
from west to east, with much of Alabama in sunshine by mid to late
afternoon. The lingering showers over East Alabama should be over by
late morning. Temperatures today will remain below average values for
early June, with a high generally in the upper 70s.

The weekend looks dry, with mostly sunny warm days and clear pleasant
nights. We will begin the weekend with temperatures in the upper 50s
at daybreak tomorrow, but the dry air will warm quickly, and the high
tomorrow afternoon should be in the mid 80s. Upper 80s are likely
Sunday, and we should be close to 90 by Monday of next week.

LONG RANGE: Moisture will slowly increase next week, and an afternoon
shower or storm is possible as early as Tuesday. Showers and storms
will become more likely by Wednesday as another upper trough
approaches from the west.

TROPICS: No sign of any tropical storm development across the Atlantic
basin through the weekend. The primary American computer model, the
GFS, at times has developed a tropical low south of Cuba around the
middle of next week, which lifts northward toward the Bahamas in about
7 days. The GFS has a bad habit of developing bogus tropical systems
during the medium range, so I would not be too concerned at this time.

AT THE BEACH: About 3 to 5 hours of sun today with a continued risk of
showers and storms, but the weather along the Gulf coast should be
mostly sunny tomorrow and Sunday with a good 10 to 12 hours of sun
each day. Afternoon highs will be close to 80 today, with low to mid
80s tomorrow and Sunday. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab last night was 80 degrees.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: Rain totals around Alabama yesterday included 2.60"
at Russellville, 2.06" at Auburn, 1.98" at Troy, 1.73" at Coker (just
west of Tuscaloosa), 1.17" at Morris, 1.07" at Courtland, 1.10" at
Mobile, .95" at Gadsden, .91" at Jasper, .79" at Tuscaloosa, and .19"
at Palmerdale.

CALIFORNIA LIGHTNING DEATH: A woman was killed by a bolt Wednesday
afternoon as she walked along a sidewalk in Fontana, in San Bernardino
County east of Los Angeles.

The bolt blew out the bottoms of the victim's shoes and hurled some of
her clothing 30 feet away. Another person was killed in California
during that same storm system due to a falling tree; the person was in
a vehicle when a tree fell onto it.

...Showers and Thunderstorms...

HEADED TOWARD A NICE WEEKEND: Scattered showers and thunderstorms
were roaming around Alabama today. Some communities were getting very
heavy rain and some beneficial rain amounts, while others were getting
almost none. This afternoon most of the showers and storms extended
from Mobile to Florence and eastward across the Tennessee Valley. East/
Central Alabama was also getting quite a few, but places like
Tuscaloosa and Birmingham had received very little by early this
afternoon. That will change as occasional showers and thunderstorms
will continue tonight. Rain amounts may average around ½ inch in many
locations.

Some of those showers and storms will linger into Friday morning, but
clearing should take place later in the day as the humidity starts to
drop. This afternoon a cool front had pushed into North and Central
Mississippi. By daybreak the front should be down over SE Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: For the second weekend in a row, it looks like mostly
sunshine for almost all of Alabama with lower humidity. We are
projecting
dew points in the 50s starting later tomorrow and all the way through
the weekend. Often this time of year we have dew points in the mid and
high 60s. Those 50s translate to lower humidity. Our coolest morning
will be Saturday morning with upper 50s common and maybe some mid 50s
in the cooler valleys of NE Alabama.

NEXT RAIN: Early next week some widely scattered showers or storms
should enter the weather picture on Tuesday with a better chance on
Wednesday. The storms yesterday afternoon and last evening dumped some
locally heavy rain, including 3.14 inches at Hollytree in Jackson
County and 3.53 at Fairhope. Near Elberta in Baldwin County there was
3.65 inches.

AT THE BEACH: After some showers and storms tonight, it looks like
mostly sunshine for Saturday and Sunday along the Alabama/NW Florida
coast. A little less humid with highs around 88.

LIGHTNING IS FRIGHTENING: Two fatalities to report in Southern
California in the vicinity of Los Angeles. A lady was walking along a
sidewalk and paused under a tree. Lightning ran down the tree and
killed her. Not far away, another powerful lightning stroke caused a
tree to fall across a car killing one person.

ROAMING: A couple of tornado warnings in Virginia this afternoon.
Coldest in the country this morning 26 at Spincich Lake, Michigan.
That was 7 degrees colder that the lowest in Alaska at Barrow. 109 was
the hottest yesterday at Yuma and Gila Bend, Arizona.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A huge commotion in the big bedroom
around 2:00 a.m. Molly was in a deep level 3 sleep. The majority owner
had been reading. She reached over to turn the lamp off accidentally
knocking it on the floor. She tried to grab it. Instead she turned
over the bedside table and stuff went everywhere. Little Miss Molly
changed from a deep sleep to a level 5 full alert. She must have
thought some great big dogs were barging into her room. I tried to
calm her and suddenly realized that the majority owner was missing.
She had fallen out of bed. It took a long time to get Little Miss
Molly resettled. She feels fully responsible for our safety and she

...Summer Rain Likely Today...

A WET THURSDAY: A moist and unstable airmass covers Alabama this
morning, and with an approaching surface front, we expect scattered to
numerous showers and thunderstorms across the state today. Most
communities should see one-half inch of rain, with isolated amounts to
one inch. A few strong storms are possible, but widespread severe
weather is not likely due to weak lapse rates and marginal
instability. The showers and storms will continue at times tonight.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Drier air begins to work into the state
tomorrow; we will mention an outside risk of a stray shower tomorrow
morning, but the sun should out in full force by afternoon, and we
will continue to forecast a dry weekend with mostly sunny warm days
and clear nights. Afternoon highs on Saturday and Sunday should be in
the 86 to 90 degree range, and any showers should be limited to the
southeast part of Alabama. Moisture returns early next week, however,
and a few scattered showers could show up as early as Monday. Then,
for the rest of next week, look for warm and humid conditions each day
with a chance scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and
thunderstorms. Another words, very routine June weather.

AT THE BEACH: Showers and storms are likely along the Gulf coast
today, but they should thin out tomorrow and over the weekend. By
Saturday and Sunday, we expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each
day. Afternoon highs will remain mostly in the low 80s, and the sea
water temperature at the Dauphin Island Lea Lab last night was 80
degrees.

TROPICS: On this fourth day of the Atlantic hurricane season, nothing
of any serious interest shows up across the Atlantic basin, and
tropical storm formation is not expected through Friday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: The temperature at Williston ND dropped to 26
degrees to establish a monthly record for June. The mercury dropped to
24 in Tower MN as winter made one last curtain call across the
northern Plains. 2-3 inches of snow fell in South Dakota and 7 inches
fell in Wyoming.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
allows you to choose the counties for which the alarm sounds. Every
Alabama home and business needs one!

...Some Changes Ahead...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: It is a story where we will see some changes
in our weather over the next few days. Probably the better news in all
of this is that we will have a very quiet second weekend in a row. In
fact, looking ahead we see mostly sunshine for both Saturday and
Sunday. A pleasant 60 degrees when you get up Sunday morning. However,
high temperatures will vary from 88 to 90 across Central Alabama over
the weekend, but the humidity will be lower.

Meanwhile, let us back up a bit and discuss Thursday and Friday. Some
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon will probably persist through
the night. It looks like Thursday will by far be our stormiest time.
Showers and storms will probably be in progress early tomorrow morning
and become numerous at times as the day goes on and into Thursday
night. We are not looking for a severe weather event tomorrow,
although there is always a chance we will have a few warnings. Look at
yesterday, for example, when we had several Severe Thunderstorm
Warnings and a large number of Significant Weather Alerts, but we were
not even in a slight risk area from the Storm Prediction Center.

The showers should end early Friday followed by clearing and less
humid weather.
The reason for the increase in our showers and storms is a rather
large low-pressure area that will form over the North Gulf of Mexico
helped along by an upper-level trough of low pressure that will be
moving across the area Thursday and Thursday night.

AT THE BEACH: Highs in the low to mid 80s Thursday and Friday.
Showers and storms will be numerous Thursday, but only a few on
Friday. Saturday and Sunday should feature mostly sunshine and a
little less humid with highs around 88.

TROPICAL WEATHER: That non-tropical area of low pressure about 400
miles NNE of the Azores has gale-force winds at its center.
Thunderstorms remain limited. The low is expected to weaken as it
moves east over colder waters. Very little chance of it becoming a
tropical or sub-tropical cyclone.

GLOBAL ROAMING: President Obama was in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia today.
While he was there, the temperature was 106, but the dew point was
only 23 giving a very low humidity of 6%. Visibility was only 5 miles
in dust. In sharp contrast, it was 47 degrees at Reykjavik, Iceland
and the visibility was nearly 50 miles. Coldest I could find in North
America was in the upper teens at Alert in far North Canada. Down on
the other end of the world, it was 84 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have had several e-mails lately asking
how we trained Little Miss Molly to ring a tiny bell on the backdoor
knob when she needs to go potty. Little Miss Molly actually trained
herself. When we got Molly, my wife was in Northern Utah visiting her
sister. They have a cute Shih-tsu named Megan. The majority owner was
so impressed that she wanted a puppy too. They went puppy shopping and
wound up with tiny Little Miss Molly. They had already trained Megan
to ring the little bell. In the couple of weeks that Molly was with
them before coming to Birmingham, she saw what was happening and in
just a couple of days started ringing the bell herself. The rest is
history. If we do not react quickly, she knocks the fool out of that
little bell with her paws. I jump to attention. Life goes on.

...Scattered Storms on the Increase...

STORMS ON THE INCREASE: We should continue to see a general increase
in the number of showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today, as
moisture increases, and the upper ridge over the Southeast U.S.
weakens. Like yesterday, most of the showers and storms will come
during the afternoon and evening hours, and the chance of any one spot
getting wet today is about one in three.

The coverage of showers and storms will increase even more tomorrow as
a surface front approaches from the west, supported by an upper level
trough. Look for scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms
tomorrow, with rain potential between one-half and one inch for most
communities across Alabama. And, heat levels will be dropping; the
high tomorrow should be only in the low 80s for most places, with
upper 70s possible for some places across North Alabama due to clouds
and rain.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Showers should move out of Alabama Friday
morning, and drier air returns Friday afternoon. We could see a few
stray showers Friday morning, especially over East Alabama, but the
sky should become partly to mostly sunny by afternoon with lower
humidity levels. The weekend looks dry, with warm afternoons and
pleasant nights. Lots of sunshine can be expected Saturday and Sunday
with a high between 87 and 90 degrees both days. The dry weather
should linger into early next week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day through
Friday with a daily chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The
weekend will feature mostly sunny weather Saturday and Sunday with
only isolated showers. Highs will remain mostly in the low 80s along
the coast from Panama City to Gulf Shores, and the sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was still in the
low 80s, at 81 degrees (F).

TUESDAY'S STORMS: NEXRAD estimates suggested over 3 inches of rain
came down late yesterday across parts of Tallapoosa County. Pea sized
hail was reported in the northeast part of Tuscaloosa along with gusty
winds, and nickel sized hail came down in parts of the city of
Montgomery from a passing storm.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of the great Alabama countryside
getting as hot as we traditionally have in mid-summer. Yesterday a
number of locations went above the 90-degree mark, which is my
automatic definition of hot. Just a few examples: it was 90 in
Albertville, Ft. Payne, Calera and Pinson; 91 in Anniston, Cullman and
Mobile; 93 in Huntsville and Montgomery; and 96 in Dothan.

Temperatures were shooting toward 90 and above again this afternoon
and some showers and thunderstorms were developing, mainly in Central
Alabama, especially from near Tuscaloosa southward to near Selma.
Others were over SE Alabama and most of them are moving toward the NNW.

Those will persist into the evening hours and then diminish. We expect
only widely separated showers and storms Wednesday. Thursday looks
like our main shower and thunderstorm day as a cool front approaches
from the west. The front should be in Mississippi early Thursday along
with a low-pressure area along the front and by Friday the low will be
near Atlanta and the cool front pushing into South Alabama. We may
have a few leftover showers Friday morning and then clearing. It looks
like mostly sunshine for Saturday and Sunday and lower humidity.

AT THE BEACH: High temperatures all the way through Saturday will be
between 82 and 88. A good chance of showers and thunderstorms on
Wednesday and Thursday. Then only a few on Friday and mostly sunshine
and not quite as humid on Saturday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A non-tropical low-pressure area was far into the
Atlantic but already moving into cooler waters. The NHC says less than
30% chance that it will develop into a tropical cyclone or even a sub-
tropical one in the next 48 hours. Ana will be our first named storm
of the season. I used to know a nice lady named Ana Lou. James Spann
says his favorite storm name for this season is Fred. I suppose my
favorite one is Ida because of that old country song named Ida Red.

SEVERE WEATHER: The SPC outlines a slight risk area this afternoon
and tonight in a broad area from North Texas to Oklahoma and Missouri,
then from Eastern Kansas across most of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and
Pennsylvania. Tomorrow the slight risk area is much smaller and
extends from West Virginia and Maryland across North Virginia,
Delaware and the south half of New Jersey.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 33 at Barter Island, Eagle and good old Deadhorse was
the coldest in Alaska this morning and I believe that this is the
first time in 2009 that no reporting station in Alaska had freezing or
lower. Coldest in the lower 48 was 27 at Doe Lake and Stonington,
Michigan.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Hope you saw that great story on the
front page of the D Section of The Birmingham News this morning
headlined, A Hero for Homeless Hounds. Check it out. Very interesting.
Terri Yearty is one of our long-time readers. Sad to report that they
lost their beloved 19-year-old redbone hound two weeks ago. His name
was Red and Terri said that he was such a sweet dog and such a part of
their family. He had a long and happy life. He added so much to their
lives and their cats loved him. Every stray animal that Terri brought
home over the years stuck to Red like glue. He was always
approachable, never intimidating and always accepting. Terri said that
we humans could learn a lot from him and I agree. He sounds very much
like Little Miss Molly.

...Moisture Slowly Increasing...

SUMMER IS HERE: Well, at least meteorological summer. In the weather
world, we consider summer during the months of June, July, and August,
but in the astronomical world, summer officially begins June 21 at
12:45 a.m. CDT. Summer-like weather is the story today, with
temperatures reaching the low 90s this afternoon in most places. The
daytime heating process will make air parcels buoyant, and you will
see a field of cumulus clouds by midday. Then, later, a few isolated
showers and storms will form in random places. Unfortunately, there is
no skill in telling you exactly where they will pop up, but we expect
them to be widely spaced. In fact, the chance of any one spot getting
wet this afternoon is about one in eight.

Look for a general increase in the number of scattered showers and
storms tomorrow as the upper ridge over the Southeast U.S. breaks
down, but the best coverage of rain this week should come on Thursday,
with a decent upper air trough will pass over, interacting with a very
moist airmass. We will forecast scattered to numerous showers and
storms on Thursday, with a high only in the low 80s because of the
clouds and showers. Some places could stay below 80 all day Thursday.
Then, drier air begins to move into the state Thursday night, and
Friday looks like a day with a good supply of sunshine and lower
humidity levels.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: For now the weekend looks rain-free, with mostly
sunny warm days and clear, pleasant nights. Afternoon highs will be in
the 87 to 90 degree range, much like last weekend. Saturday morning
should be pleasant, with upper 50s possible for the cooler valleys
across North Alabama.

AT THE BEACH: About 4 to 6 hours of sunshine through Thursday with the
daily risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the
immediate coast will be in the low 80s. Drier air arrives by Friday,
and the weekend looks generally dry at this time. The sea water
temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 81 degrees.

ROGUE STORMS: While about 98 percent of Alabama was dry yesterday, a
few isolated thunderstorms formed as temperatures reached the low 90s.
One storm in Walker County produced dime sized hail near Dora and
Sumiton. A similar storm popped up later southwest of Haleyville. And,
one shower was over parts of downtown Birmingham for about 30 minutes.

HEAT PARADE: For many Alabama communities, yesterday was the hottest
day so far in 2009. Birmingham's official high was 89, but Dothan
soared to 96. The high was 93 at Huntsville, Montgomery, and Muscle
Shoals, while Tuscaloosa soared to 92. Average highs in early June are
generally in the mid to upper 80s.

...Hurricane Season Starts Today...

SUMMER IS HERE: We have two big things starting today. Summer is here
and today was the first day of the 2009 hurricane season. The Gulf of
Mexico, the Caribbean and the Atlantic are calm and collected like
they are most of the time on June 1. The mathematical chance of a
tropical storm or hurricane being in progress on the first day of the
season is extremely small. The probability gradually builds up as the
sea surface temperatures get warmer leading to the prime season
occurring in July, August and September. Long-term records show that
tropical activity peaks around September 10 and starts a slow decline.
That is a long-term average and it can be very different from year to
year.

We had some hot temperatures Sunday afternoon including 92 in
Montgomery and 91 in Tuscaloosa, Mobile and Huntsville. The old
thermometer was heating up again this afternoon and temperatures had
already exceeded 90 in the Tennessee Valley, as well as Tuscaloosa,
Montgomery and Greenville. It is that time of the year where we will
see fewer and fewer breaks in the heat and humidity.
Having said that, we will get another break this weekend. Both
Saturday and Sunday should feature near total sunshine with highs
backing off to the middle 80s along with lower humidity and lows at
night in the low 60s.

RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER: We will have some showers and thunderstorms
before the niceties of the weekend. A few of those will show up
Wednesday, but Thursday looks like the main day. By Thursday, another
front is expected to push down to near the NW corner of Alabama
increasing the number of showers and thunderstorms. A few leftover
showers should still be around Saturday morning followed by clearing.

THE MONTH OF MAY: Not everybody had a wetter than normal May, but
most of the state did. Thanks to Michelle Miklik for assembling
numerous reports of May rain. There was rain on virtually every day of
the month and on many days the average amounts were substantial. For
example, on May 2 the average rain amount from 273 stations around the
state was 1.25 inches. At Coker in Tuscaloosa County, 11.57 inches of
rain in May bringing the 2009 total to 35.42 inches. If Coker gets
that much rain the rest of the year, they would wind up with over 70
inches. Of course, that will not happen.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The focus for severe thunderstorms tomorrow will be
in a long curved area from NW Texas NE and east to Indiana and Ohio.
It was 110 degrees in Death Valley yesterday afternoon. 29 this
morning at Bradford, Pennsylvania was the lowest in the lower 48
states. Coldest in Alaska was 26 at Barrow. We may end our little
contest guessing when the last snow would disappear from Whittier,
Alaska by tomorrow. Now down to 2 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is one of the happiest
little dogs I have ever seen. Not saying that because she lightens up
our household. When the pizza man came the other night, I thought she
was going to scratch the paint off the front door windowpanes. She
scratches so fast that her feet are a blur and then she stops long
enough to try to sniff under the door to either smell the pizza person
or the pizza. Yesterday afternoon, on our little walk, Dino and his
mommy saw us pass and Dino zoomed through their backyard to play with
Molly. That absolutely makes the day for both of those little animals.
Life goes on.

...Welcome To June...

WELCOME TO JUNE: The sixth month of the year in Birmingham features
warm temperatures, increasing humidity and generally light
precipitation. It is the third driest month, averaging 3.78 inches of
rain. Only October and August are drier. Afternoon and evening
thunderstorms become a frequent occurrence, generally happening on
eight days during the month. Much of the rain that falls in the month
is associated with thunderstorms. On average, rain falls on nine days
during the month. As you would expect, cloudy periods are rare. The
sky is cloudy 22% of the time on average. Only August features less
cloudy time. The average PM relative humidity is on the rise, at 53%,
rising from the 45% observed in April. The average dewpoint reaches
65F, which is my definition of muggy. This is up from the 58F in
May. 12.09 inches of rain fell in June 1900, which stands as the all-
time record for the month. On June 1, the average high and low is
85/62. By June 30th, it will be 90/68. The coolest it has ever been
in June is 47F on June 16, 1917. It has been as warm as 106F on June
29, 1931.

HOT ONE SUNDAY: Several spots reached 90 degrees across Alabama on
Sunday. Dothan was the state's hot spot with 94F. Tuscaloosa hit
91F. Birmingham came up just of the 90 degree mark with 91F.

DRY AND HOT FOR YOUR MONDAY AND TUESDAY: Today and tomorrow will
look and feel a lot like yesterday with mostly sunny skies and highs
near 90. One lone thundershower formed in the Tennessee Valley late
yesterday afternoon. Can't rule out one today or tomorrow, but they
are not likely. Of course, the NWS Huntsville immediately issued a
Significant Weather Alert for it…much to JB's chagrin.

SHOWERS RETURN: Moisture levels will be on the rise and an
approaching front will help to trigger showers and storms on
Wednesday. This front will stick across the area and wait on a strong
low to move across Thursday. This will mean widespread showers and
storms then. They will depart by Friday morning, leaving clearing
skies and sunny hot weather for the weekend.

NORTHWEST FLOW LATE IN THE WEEK: We will find ourselves in a
northwest flow across Alabama starting late in the week. While that
means generally fine weather, it can also ship rogue thunderstorm
complexes our way down here in the Deep South. Those complexes can
pack quite a punch, so we will be looking out for one.

HURRICANE SEASON STARTS…NOW: Today marks the official start of the
North Atlantic Hurricane Season. It was back on this date that the
U.S. Weather Bureau began using female names to identify tropical
storms and hurricanes in the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea and Gulf of
Mexico. Om 1979, male names were added to the list that is reused
every six years. Tropical cyclones that make a tremendous impact have
their names retired. It is interesting to note that we are back on
the 1979 list this year. The following names have been retired from
the first list: Bob, David, Elena, Frederic, Gloria, Isabel and Juan.

...A Little Hot Out There...

A beautiful Sunday afternoon is in progress across Alabama.
Temperatures were soaring through the 80s just before lunch time.
Many spots will register at 90 degrees or above this afternoon. Skies
are mostly sunny and regional radars are clear.

DRY WEATHER WILL CONTINUE: High pressure is centered over the Mid-
Atlantic States this morning. It is providing our current spate of
fine weather across Central Alabama. As it slides eastward over the
next couple of days, our winds will become southeasterly and moisture
levels will begin to increase. Monday and Tuesday should be dry,
although we can't rule out the possibility of a pop-up shower or storm
late in the day on Tuesday. Temperatures will remain quite warm, with
afternoon readings well above normal for the next couple of days.
Highs will be in the upper 80s to lower 90s.

MIDWEEK SHOWERS: By Wednesday, a cold front will be approaching
Alabama from the north. Look for a chance of storms on Wednesday,
mainly during the afternoon hours. The models have been consistent in
a solution that develops a low over Arkansas late on Wednesday. This
low will move eastward, passing through the Tennessee Valley on
Thursday. It will produce a good chance of showers and storms during
the day on Thursday. Some of the storms could be on the heavy side.

FRIDAY AND BEYOND: It looks like the low will be in northeastern
Georgia by Friday morning. Most of the showers will be out of the
state by then. Alabama will be under a northwesterly flow, which
provides generally fine weather, but can throw a couple of rogue
thunderstorm complexes our way from the Midwest.

TROPICAL ATLANTIC QUIET: The North Atlantic Hurricane Season
officially begins tomorrow and continues until November 30th. There
are no disturbances in the Atlantic right now that threaten to become
tropical cyclones and the numerical weather prediction models don't
show anything of concern over the next week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: During the afternoon of May 31, 1998, lines of
severe thunderstorms formed and moved rapidly east across New York and
Western New England. Several of these storms became tornadic over
Saratoga, Albany, Rensselaer, and Washington counties in New York and
Bennington county Vermont. Straight-line wind damage occurred across a
wide area. Cloud to ground lightning rates over the region reached
15,000 strokes per hour, rates not observed before over this region.
These storms resulted 68 injuries but no fatalities, tens of millions
of dollars in damage to homes and businesses, and extensive forest
damage.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Birmingham recorded 17.23 inches of rain during
the month to establish a new rainfall record for the month of May. It
also was the third wettest month ever in Birmingham. Amazingly, the
month came very close to being the all-time wettest month ever in the
Magic City, eclipsed only by July 1916 when a dying tropical storm
hovered over Alabama, dumping 20.12 inches of rain on the city.
Birmingham and much of the Deep South was locked in a southwesterly
flow pattern for a couple of weeks during the month that spread
copious amounts of Gulf moisture over the region.
