...Warmer and More Humid...

CHANCE OF SHOWERS BY MIDWEEK: It does not look like a widespread
beneficial rain, but we should start getting some showers here in
Central Alabama starting later Tuesday and extending into the middle
part of the week. Part of this is due to a storm system moving across
the central part of the country. The low-pressure area will pass well
to our north, but it may be strong enough to pull a funnel system
into Alabama about Wednesday.

We do not expect any significant temperature change even if a front
were to move into this area. It shows signs of partially losing its
identity by the time it gets here. But we are through with the cool
temperatures in the 40s when we get up each morning. Instead,
tonight's lows should be in the mid 50s and even warmer in the 60s
for the rest of the week. High temperatures Sunday were in the upper
70s and lower 80s. Some of the warmer temperatures included 82 in
Dothan, 81 in Birmingham and Tuscaloosa and 80 in Montgomery and Mobile.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is a large area of clouds and thunderstorms
over the NW Caribbean. It is due to a broad area of low pressure.
Conditions appear to be favorable for some slow development before
the system moves over the Yucatan Peninsula in a day or so. It will
continue to produce heavy rain over Central America for the next few
days. Otherwise, the Tropics are not showing much enthusiasm at all.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: 103 in Wink, Texas was the hottest in the USA
Saturday. The lowest was 21 at Land o Lakes, Wisconsin. Some action
in the nation's midsection today with a slight risk of severe weather
through much of Oklahoma, Kansas and Eastern Nebraska. Monday the
action will shift eastward into Missouri, Arkansas and extreme NE Texas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I feel very guilty, because I have not
played a ballgame with Little Miss Molly in nearly a week and only
one walk around the track during the last week. Our grandkids are
doing most of that, but I can definitely feel that she misses me. I
will correct that this week. Life goes on.

...Perfect Weather Warning..

THIS JUST IN:
The ABC3340 Weather Center is issuing a Perfect Weather Warning for
Central Alabama. It is in effect until Monday morning at 11 a.m. A
Perfect Weather Warning means that conditions are ideal for outdoor
activities in the affected area. All residents are urged to head
outside and enjoy the perfect conditions.
GREETINGS FROM THE GULF COAST: The weather is perfect here in Destin
today also. Great day to be on the beautiful beaches of Alabama and
Northwest Florida, with sunny skies, low humidity and highs well into
the 80s. This weather will continue through Monday, with chances for
showers returning by Tuesday.
ANOTHER REFRESHING MORNING: Overnight lows on this Saturday were as
nice as they were yesterday morning across Central Alabama, with
readings uniformly in the 40s. DeSoto State Park checked in with a
low of 39F for the coolest official reporting spot in the state. Most
areas will be near 50 tonight, with cooler locations dipping into the
40s once again.
YOUR FORECAST: Our large high pressure system will slide enough east
to allow for a return flow off the Gulf by tomorrow. Humidity levels
will rise and so wilt the mercury, especially noticeable at night. An
approaching front will set off showers by Tuesday. The question will
be whether a surge of Gulf moisture can get far enough up into Central
Alabama to give us significant rain chances. For now, we will call
for scattered storms on Tuesday with the front passing by Wednesday
and leaving us dry for Thursday.
TROPICS: An area of disturbed weather is over the western Caribbean.
It is associated with a broad area of low pressure that has yet to get
its act together. The overnight run of the GFS was consistent with
previous runs in developing some sort of tropical low by Monday once
the system moves into the Bay Of Campeche, then taking the low
northeast toward the Florida Panhandle or Big Bend area late in the
week. A tropical wave is over the Central Caribbean. It is moving
into an area that is more favorable for development, and this system
will have to be watched as it moves toward the Yucatan also.
ONE YEAR AGO: Up to two feet of snow lay across parts of New York
near Buffalo as the earliest lake effect snowstorm in the area was a
record setter. A record snowfall for any October day fell on the
11th, only to see the record broken the following day. A total of
24.0 inches fell at Depew, NY. Thunder snow was reported throughout
the evening of the 12th and the early morning hours of the 13th. Low
pressure over Ontario set up a long fetch of cold air over the still
warm waters of Lake Erie, producing nearly stationary bands of heavy
snow that continued for two days. The facts that trees were still in
full leaf led to widespread tree damage and power outages. After the
storm, 380,000 people were without power in the area.

...Now That's What I'm Talking About...

I head to Washington for a week and boy what a
difference when I get back to town. Good job folks! I leave with
highs in the 90s, and come back to 70s. And 40s in the morning. I
need to go away and come back more often. Way to go guys!

OUR WEEKEND FORECAST: Gorgeous weather for the
weekend, with lots of sunshine, blue skies and seasonable
temperatures. Highs today will range between 77-84. Add a few
degrees to tomorrow. Lows will be in the lower 50s tonight, warming
to near 60 tomorrow night.

SHRIMP FORECAST: Lots of folks headed to the beautiful
beaches of Alabama and Northwest Florida for one last fling during
this long weekend. Outstanding weather along the Gulf Coast with
lots of sunshine and mild temperatures. Highs will be warming
through the 80s for highs and lows will be in the 60s. Forecast
confidence gets shaky early in the week as a potential tropical low
develops in the Gulf. It would head toward the Florida Panhandle,
accompanied by an increase in showers.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Today's pigskin prognostication
remembers one of the legends of college football forecasting…Leonard
Postoasties. Leonard's Losers was a much beloved syndicated radio
show back in the 70s and 80s. Check out my football weather forecast
with a smart pill machine bent.

THE WEEK AHEAD: A strong disturbance out west will
pass to our north early in the week. Meanwhile, our persistent high
pressure will shift far enough to the east to allow a decent flow
from the south. Humidity levels will be on the increase along with
temperatures, which will feel summery again. Then there is that
potential low in the Gulf. If it does develop, it could steal the
moisture from our frontal system. For now, it looks like showers may
develop as early as late Monday night, but be more likely Tuesday. A
few showers may linger into Wednesday. Another system will pass to
our north on Friday, bringing a slight chance of showers, but no real
wet weather systems are in sight.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression Fifteen dissipated
yesterday afternoon in the far eastern Atlantic. A trough of low
pressure extending northeast out of the western Caribbean shows
little promise. If anything does form, it would likely be
subtropical and move northeastward from the Bahamas. Then there is
that low in the Gulf. It could become a weak tropical depression as
it moves northeast.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: One of the only animals to
survive Hurricane Katrina at the New Orleans Aquarium, King Midas, a
300 pound sea turtle, was placed back into its home. Over 10,000
animals died in the facility when life support systems failed during
the extended power failure after the devastating hurricane.
Surviving the disaster were the penguins, two sea otters, the bird
colony and some freshwater fish.

TEXTBOOK EXAMPLE OF AUTUMN WEATHER: It may be that, but we would
much rather have rain. The drought situation continues to worsen and
the percentage of Alabama that has the worst drought designation has
increased some more during the last week. Rain deficiencies are out
of the ballpark. Anyway, since we cannot have rain, let's enjoy the
weekend. We will have lows in the 40s again tonight, near 50 Sunday
morning and 60 or better by Monday morning. The humidity will stay
rather low through Sunday, but it will increase some on Monday. We
will even have some scattered showers at some point Tuesday, Tuesday
night and Wednesday. It does not look like a great rain event, but as
we say, "In a drought, every teacup helps."

It was another cool night across the state and for most sections the
coolest since last spring. Around Alabama, some of the lower
temperatures included:

36 in Hamilton
37 in DeSoto State Park
38 in Vigo near Piedmont
39 in Odenville, Muscadine and Black Creek
41 in Ft. Payne, Cullman, Mumford and Centreville
42 in Troy, Tuscaloosa, Alabaster/Navajo Pines, Clanton and Talladega
43 in Huntsville, Shelby County Airport, Muscle Shoals, Ashland,
Alexander City, Pinson, Jasper, Wadley

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Near perfect weather for high school football
tonight. Clear with little or no wind. About 63 at kick off and 55 at
the final whistle. On Saturday, mostly clear dry weather for Alabama/
Ole Miss at Oxford, Tulane/UAB in Birmingham and Auburn/Arkansas in
Fayetteville. Expect about 73 for the 11:00 a.m. kick off at Ole Miss
and near 80 later in the game. In Birmingham, the 6:00 p.m. kick off
temperature should be about 73 dropping quickly into the 60s. In
Fayetteville, the kick off is at 6:45 and about 74 degrees dropping
to 63 at the final whistle.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The tropical depression was 940 miles east of
Bermuda and no concern to the USA. A large area of disturbed weather
continues as close by as the NW Caribbean. Most of it is over land.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure enjoyed doing a weather program
for the St. Vincent's East Cardiac Rehab Support Group. Many thanks
to Jana Williams and Diane Bonner for a most pleasant evening.
Ironically, I was back in the same auditorium to hear James Spann
speak to the Birmigham East Rotary Club. Excellent speech on the
global warming/cooling situation. I continue to be surprised at the
number of Little Miss Molly fans. They seem to be everywhere and that
makes Molly and I very happy, because I always tell her that people
love her. Life goes on......

...Golden Days of Fall...

SEVERE CLEAR: If you enjoyed the weather yesterday, then you will
love our forecast today. More of the same; a brilliantly sunny fall
day with a high in the low 70s following a chilly, crisp morning. It
will be very hard to find a decent cloud in the Alabama sky as very
dry air remains in place. Not much change over the weekend; just a
gradual day to day warmup tomorrow and Sunday with a good supply of
sunshine both days along with cool nights.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Could not ask for better. For the high school
games tonight, clear and cool, about 65 at kick off and dropping to
the 50s by the second half. In college games, Alabama is at Ole Miss
for an 11:00 a.m. kick off tomorrow in Oxford. It should be sunny
with about 73 at the start rising to 78 during the game. Auburn will
be in Fayetteville to play Arkansas in a 6:45 kick off. Fair weather
expected, about 70 at kick off and lowering into the 60s. Tulane will
be in Birmingham to play UAB at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field. Clear
weather, 68 at kick off, 62 at final whistle.

SHRIMP FESTIVAL: We have sure enjoyed watching the thousands of folks
down on the Alabama Gulf coast on the ABC 33/40 SKYCAM atop the
Phoenix All-Suites in Gulf Shores; this is the weekend for the annual
Shrimp Festival, and our camera gives us a perfect view of all the
festivities. If you are headed down to the coast for the weekend, the
weather will be excellent with sunny warm days and clear pleasant
nights. Afternoon highs in Gulf Shores will be in the 80 to 83 degree
range each day through Sunday, with morning lows in the 60s. Needless
to say, there is no chance of rain. The food sure looks great, and we
have noticed that live bands are playing nightly on a big stage set
up in the parking lot of the Gulf Shores Public Beach.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: It still looks like the next chance of rain for
Alabama will come on Tuesday of next week thanks to an upper trough
passing north of here. Unfortunately, moisture will be limited and
showers should be widely scattered. A stronger system is due in here
toward the end of next week (about seven days from now) with a better
chance of showers and thunderstorms. Then, a nice shot of very chilly
air will move into the state, and could set the stage for the first
light frost of the season across the colder valleys of North Alabama
in the October 20-22 time frame.

TROPICS: Tropical depression fifteen formed in the middle of the
Atlantic late yesterday; it is about 900 miles east of Bermuda, and
is moving northeast across the open water. It is no threat to land.
Elsewhere across the Atlantic basin, the Caribbean is unsettled, but
there is nothing especially organized there. The hurricane season
will run through the end of November, and we note that sea surface
temperatures across the Gulf of Mexico are still generally in the 80s.

30s IN THE COLDER VALLEYS TONIGHT: That does not mean that everybody
across North and Central Alabama will see the tired old thermometer
go below the 40-degree mark, but in the traditional cold spots of
North Alabama, look for some temperatures in the mid to upper 30s.
Some of those places are Bridgeport, Valley Head, Pinson,
Collinsville and maybe DeSoto State Park. Ft. Payne Airport is in the
bottom of the valley. They could have about 38. There could be just a
few clouds crossing the NE corner of Alabama late tonight, but most
areas will be sparkling clear. It was plenty cool this afternoon.
Temperatures were only in the upper 60s after lunch with dew points
in the 30s. There was a nice early morning chill. Here is a sample of
some of the coolest overnight lows.

39 at Black Creek (NE Etowah County); 40 at Moulton, Decatur, Russell
Cave National Monument; 43 at Ft. Payne, Meridianville, and Sycamore;
44 at Cottondale, Crossville and DeSoto State Park; 45in Pinson and
Collinsville; 49 at Birmingham and Anniston; 53 at Tuscaloosa.

The pleasant autumn temperatures will continue for several more days.
The temperature should recover to about 82 Sunday and 84 Monday, but
nights will still be pleasantly cool. We do not foresee any rain
until early next week about Tuesday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Could not ask for better. For high school games
Friday night, clear and cool, about 65 at kick off and dropping to
the upper 50s. In college games, Alabama is at Old Miss for an 11:00
a.m. kick off Saturday. It should be sunny with about 73 at the start
rising to 78 during the game. Auburn will be in Fayetteville to play
Arkansas in a 6:45 kick off. Fair weather expected, about 70 at kick
off and lowering into the 60s. Tulane will be in Birmingham to play
UAB at 6:00 p.m. Clear weather, 68 at kick off, 62 at final whistle.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A low-pressure area about 800 miles ESE of Bermuda
is in an unfavorable area for development, but if the thunderstorms
increase and organize just slightly, it could become a tropical
depression. It should move NE and become absorbed in a frontal
boundary. There is a lot of shower activity from the NW Caribbean
across Cuba, the Bahamas and a few hundred miles into the Atlantic.
Tropical development is not expected despite all of that.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A nice crisp 27 atop Mt. LeConte in the Great
Smokies this morning. It was 32 on Newfound Gap. In North Carolina,
it was 30 on Mt. Mitchell and 32 at Beech Mountain and Grandfather
Mountain. It was 5 above at Arctic Village, Alaska and 21 at Alturas,
California.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: A busy, busy lifestyle in Molly's
abode. She absolutely does not lack for attention at any time. She is
a nosy little rascal having to know everything that is going on. That
is a deficit for her, because she is getting far less sleep than she
is accustomed to during the daylight hours. When she finally gets in
bed at night, it takes about 15 seconds to completely pass out. I was
wide awake at 4 o'clock this morning, took a short walk and Venus was
big and bright. I was amazed at how clear the sky was after all
summer haze. Life goes on.......

...Golden Days of Fall...

COOLEST AIR SO FAR THIS SEASON ARRIVES: The next five days will
feature delightful fall weather for Alabama and most of the Deep
South thanks to very dry and cool continental air that is rolling
into the state this morning with a brisk northwest wind. Our forecast
will indicate a high of 70 today, but some North Alabama communities
could fail to get out of the 60s this afternoon despite maximum
available sunshine. The humidity will remain low, visibility will be
excellent, and you probably won't find a decent cloud in the sky all
day. Once the sun goes down, temperatures will drop quickly, and we
should be in the mid 40s by daybreak tomorrow. Some of the colder
valleys could be close to 40 degrees; there won't be any doubt that
fall is here.
We don't expect much change through the weekend with sunny days and
clear, chilly nights. A warming trend will begin Sunday afternoon as
temperatures will climb back into the low 80s.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: It doesn't get any better for the games across
Alabama tonight and tomorrow night. Kickoff temperatures will be
close to 65, but falling into the 50s during the game. You will need
a jacket or sweater if you can remember where they are! The sky will
be clear and the wind will be out of the north at around 5 to 10 mph.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: At this time it looks like the next chance of
rain around here will come Tuesday of next week thanks to an upper
air trough passing north of Alabama. A stronger disturbance will
impact Alabama toward the end of next week (around October 18-19)
with a decent chance of rain, followed by what could be the coolest
air so far this season in the October 20-23 time frame. In the GFS
(the primary American global model) is correct, we might have a
chance of some scattered light frost during those three days, mainly
across the valley areas. Needless to say, this is just a chance since
there isn't too much skill in a specific forecast beyond seven days.
But, the GFS has been very persistent in this solution in recent days.

TROPICS: Don't forget the hurricane season runs through the end of
November. Traditionally, the true core of the season begins to wind
down in late October, but looking out across the Atlantic basin we
note there is disturbed weather across much of the Caribbean. Nothing
organized now, but we will sure keep an eye on things in coming days
and weeks.

FALL COLORS: During an average year, the fall foliage colors tend to
peak here in Alabama during the last week of October and the first
two weeks of November. Due to the ongoing drought, many have opined
that this year's color season will be a bust. We will wait and watch,
often we see a beautiful palette of colors across the Alabama
hillsides even after a long dry spell. I was up at Mount Cheaha on
September 29, and I noticed only a few patches of color up on the big
mountain. Better days are coming...

THE REAL AUTUMN SHOWS UP: Driving westward from U.S. 11 across
Deerfoot Parkway in NE Jefferson County, you cross two distinct
ridges. As I topped one of those ridges this morning, it seemed like
I could see Sandia Crest overlooking Albuquerque. Of course, I could
not even if the earth was flat, but I like to daydream. You sure
could see for miles today with a bright blue sky, low humidity and a
nice north breeze. Haze would not dare show up on a day like this.

This is our most distinct touch of autumn so far. The new season
finally comes on the weather stage. I believe if we were not short on
rain, everybody would be out in the street dancing. The weather is
going to be utopia-like all the way through the weekend. We do not
see any real prospect of rain until about Tuesday of next week.
Temperatures will fall into the upper 40s for the next four nights.
In fact, we are forecasting 45 for a low early Friday morning. This
will be perfect football weather for both high schools and college
this weekend. With a brisk north wind, we look for only 73 as a high
tomorrow and gradually climbing after that.

A part of West/Central Alabama had a good rain event yesterday.
Actual measurements (not radar estimates) showed 1.23 inches in
Livingston, 1.10 in Centreville and 1.06 in good old Havana Junction
(Hale County).

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: The Tropics can be quite active at this time,
but it is very quiet. There is nothing on the ocean threatening to
become a tropical depression or a tropical storm. My good friend and
Rook adversary, Glenn Slye in Vestavia, suggested recently that we
should hook tugboats to those big floating icebergs in the North
Atlantic and pull them southward into the hurricane lanes and put a
damper on their intensity. Just thought I would pass that along. Did
you know that the Sahara Desert in Africa plays a part in the
Atlantic Basin tropical season? Low-pressure systems form in the
desert, move westward and slide off into the Atlantic. If all the
ingredients are friendly, that low can become tropical and can even
become a severe hurricane. That same desert also occasionally sends
some high-altitude dust across the Atlantic, which puts a damper on
development. The Sahara Desert covers 3,475,000 square miles in
Africa. It is the world's largest. Cold spots this morning 26 in
Bryce Canyon, Utah and Dickinson, N.D. and 1 above zero at Chandalar
Lake, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I was out for a short walk at 4:45 this
morning. The planet Venus was extremely bright and seemingly
unusually large in the eastern sky. Only about a week ago, you could
see it along with a crescent moon very early each morning. There is
so much in nature that I want to see and so much reading I want to
do, that I clearly need to live to 115. Maybe Little Miss Molly will
help me do that. She sure does make life easier and calmer. Had her
on my desk for a time this morning, because my grandson was running
the garbage disposal to clean it. Little Miss Molly quickly heads for
the hills when that thing goes off. Life goes on......

...Much Cooler By Tonight...

NO RAIN FOR A WHILE: Another long dry spell is ahead for Alabama as
much drier air rolls into Alabama today. While we do expect afternoon
highs back in the low to mid 80s today, the humidity will be much
lower making for a very comfortable day.

The coolest air so far this season will roll into North Alabama
tonight, and we are expecting low temperatures between 47 and 52
degrees by daybreak tomorrow. Tomorrow and Friday will be delightful
autumn days with highs only in the low to mid 70s and chill nights.
Early morning lows in the upper 40s are likely both Friday and
Saturday morning. Needless to say, we are expecting nearly perfect
weather for high school football games Friday night; you will
probably need a light jacket for the first time this season.

WEEKEND PEEK: The dry air goes nowhere, so the weekend will remain
rain-free with sunny days, clear nights, and a gradual warming trend.
We should reach the low 80s by Sunday afternoon, but the humidity
will remain low.
At this point it looks like our next chance of rain will come Monday
night and Tuesday of next week; but that is only a chance, and for
now it doesn't look like a major rain event.

THE RAIN REPORT: While yesterday's showers produced very light
amounts for most Alabama communities, there were a few exceptions.
Some rain totals included 1.06 at Havanna Junction (in Hale County,
about 25 miles south of Tuscaloosa, and the home of the great Alabama
weather legend J.B. Elliott), .68" at Sayre, .64" at Cullman (the ABC
33/40 SKYCAM site just east of downtown Cullman), .57" at Cuba (in
Sumter County near the Mississippi State line), .51" at Gorgas, .43"
at Mounsville, .37" at Demopolis, .12" at Haleyville, .14" at
Northport, and .05" at Alabaster. At the ABC 33/40 Studio in
Riverchase, we received only .03". Our Skywatcher at Black Creek (Vic
Bell), northeast of Gasdsden, reported only a trace.

DROUGHT UPDATE: 52 percent of Alabama is now under an Exceptional
Drought designation. That is the worst category. The drought has
worsened because a week ago it 48.7 percent. The Exceptional Drought
Area within Alabama has almost doubled in the last three months. 75
percent of the pasture and range land in Alabama was in poor or very
poor condition according to the U.S Department of Agriculture,
Alabama Field Office, Montgomery based on data issued this afternoon.
90 percent of Alabama has very short or short top soil moisture as of
today. That has worsened
because it was 87 percent a week ago.

WINTER WINDS ARE BLOWING: Coldest place in the continental U.S.
yesterday was Wisdom, Montana with 19 degrees. Coldest spot in Alaska
was Deadhorse, with one degree above zero. The high yesterday in
Duluth, Minnesota was only 41 degrees with periods of light rain
through the day.

SHOWERS ENDING, SUNSHINE RETURNS TOMORROW: We do not want the
sunshine. I know most people like a pretty day, but personally I
would gladly trade the sunshine for an all-day steady rain, about 2
inches worth. No chance in getting that. In fact, after today's
showers we do not see much chance of any more rain through the early
part of next week, possibly some by around next Tuesday. Since we
cannot have the rain, we might as well enjoy the changeover to autumn-
like conditions. This includes some low temperatures in the upper 40s
and lower 50s and some highs in the 70s with much lower humidity. We
still look for about 85 tomorrow before a second front comes in and
brings a noticeable change to cooler. See our day-by-day forecast for
all of the details.

TODAY'S RAIN EVENT: Quite a few people got rain, but it was not a
statewide drenching, by any means. A broad line of showers moved into
West Alabama around daybreak and moved slowly eastward. A few fairly
strong thunderstorms developed in the heat of the day over East
Alabama. Here in Central Alabama we could still see a few showers
this evening followed by clearing overnight. Just a few sample rain
amounts: 0.68 at Sayre, 0.33 at Anniston Airport, 0.37 at Demopolis,
0.20 at Tuscaloosa Airport and only 0.18 at Birmingham Airport.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There was a low-pressure area near the Yucatan
Peninsula coast about 75 miles ENE of Chetumal, Mexico. It has
remained unchanged so far today and the recon flight was cancelled.
It is so close to land, that it probably will not have time to
develop. Nothing else going on in the tropics.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Some cold temperatures setting in over the
Rockies as the snow cover increases. The coldest in the lower 48 this
morning was 12 at Doylesville, Colorado. It was 21 at Gould and
Dillon, Colorado, 22 at Bryce Canyon, Utah and 23 at Randolph, Utah.
The coldest in Alaska was 3 above zero at good old Deadhorse. Hottest
temperature yesterday was 99 at East Mesa, Arizona. Over in
Mississippi, there was almost 1 inch of rain overnight at Louisville
and 0.69 on the Old Miss campus at Oxford. The normal annual rain
amount for San Francisco is only 20.11 inches. San Diego receives
less than 11 inches a year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is spending more and
more time sitting on my desk or either curled up asleep by my
keyboard. It is her escape mechanism from the noise of a full house
that looks more like a motel instead of a home. I like having the
little girl this close to me. Sometimes I pause and talk to Molly
just like she is a little human. Believe it or not, she will sit
there and look me right in the eye from only a couple of inches away
like she understands everything that I am saying. It is relaxing to
talk to her. I can get a lot off my shoulders, then I give her a nice
rubdown. She told me after our last talk that my eyes look like a Los
Angeles street map. That means I did not get enough sleep. Life goes
on and Molly and I will be around a long, long time....

...A Front, But Not Much Rain...

COOLER DAYS AHEAD: A cold front will swing through Alabama today,
bringing the chance of a few showers, and marking the beginning of a
pattern change that promises much cooler air later this week.
Unfortunately, the chance of beneficial, widespread rain is small
today due to limited moisture, and weakening upper air support for
the front. Showers and storms will be widely scattered, and many
neighborhoods will not see a drop. Where the showers do form, amounts
should be under a quarter of an inch. Temperatures today will remain
summer-like, with highs generally in the mid 80s.
The high will drop into the low 80s tomorrow, and close to 80 on
Thursday. You will really feel the difference by early Thursday
morning, when temperatures will dip into the low 50s. Then, on
Friday, the high will be only in the mid 70s with a fresh north
breeze. The weekend ahead will feature delightful fall weather, with
sunny pleasant days and clear, chilly nights. The colder valleys
across North Alabama should reach the 40s early Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday morning. Needless to say, the weather looks superb for both
high school and college football games across the Deep South this
weekend.

WE NEED RAIN: We have been typing these three words for a long time,
and it sure looks like our rain deficit will just keep growing in
coming days and weeks. Of course, we should point that October is
typically the driest month of the year, so the deficiency increase
won't be too severe. Birmingham's rain shortage for the year is now
exactly 19 inches; the deficit at Tuscaloosa is up to 25.96", while
Anniston needs a whopping 26.92" to get back to normal. Most of North
and Central Alabama continues in an exceptional drought, as defined
by the USDA Drought Monitor. Looks like we will be staying there for
a while.

OCTOBER HEAT: Birmingham's official high yesterday was 90 degrees,
just one degree shy of the record high for October 8, 91 set way back
in 1897. The high in Pinson was also 90; that did set a new record
high for the day (the old record there was 87 in 1990). The hot spots
were Decatur, Muscle Shoals, and Montgomery with 92.

COLD OUT WEST: Coldest spots in the continental U.S. yesterday were
Alamosa, CO, Bridgeport, CA, and Reese River, NV with 18 degrees.
Denver dropped to 32, but with very dry air in place they warmed to
72 degrees yesterday afternoon.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Ever wanted to be a storm spotter? Or, just learn
more about severe storms and tornadoes? Then you need to attend Storm
Alert Xtreme at the BJCC on Saturday November 10; this is our annual
storm spotter training session that is in association with the
Alabama International Auto Show. There is no admission charge; just
show up! It all begins at 8:30… just look for the signs around the BJCC!

NICE COOL DOWN LATER IN WEEK: The rain deficit for 2007 will be over
19 inches by tomorrow. Today is the 23rd day in a row with no
measurable rain at Birmingham Airport and we have only received 3.30
inches since September 1. The drought is still major. Unfortunately,
we do not foresee a great deal of rain with an approaching cold front
that will give us a nice cool down later in the week. The most
noticeable fall-like weather will be from Friday through the weekend.

Actually there may be two parts to the front: the first one moving in
later tomorrow and slowing in South Alabama with the second push of
drier air and cooler temperatures arriving late Thursday. Look for an
extremely pleasant stretch of weather from about Thursday through
Sunday with lows in the 50s and highs mostly in the 70s with humidity
a lot lower. I guess we should not use the word pleasant during the
midst of a severe drought. Yesterday there was a record high of 91 in
Pinson and 90 in Anniston. It was also 90 at Birmingham Airport and
91 in Tuscaloosa and Huntsville.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A disorganized area of showers and thunderstorms
over the NW Caribbean still does not have a well-defined circulation.
A recon flight into the area was cancelled, but upper-level winds may
become more favourable in the next couple of days as it moves WNW.
NHC tentatively will send another recon flight into the area on Tuesday.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: How about that Midwest heat and it turned tragic
in Chicago Sunday during a major marathon race. At least one person
died and a number of people were hospitalized. The 90-degree high in
Nashville Sunday was only the 12th time in 60 years that they have
experienced 90 in October. Never in their weather history has it
reached 90 or higher after October 10. In contrast, it is quite cold
over parts of the Rockies. It was 16 this morning at Antero
Reservoir, Colorado, 18 at Alamosa and 19 at Gunnison. In Alaska, it
was 5 above at Deadhorse and Eagle. The wind chill today has been
slightly below zero over Northern Alaska. Hottest in the nation
Sunday was 96 in Laredo and Hidalgo, Illinois. That is extremely hot
for the Midwest. Almost 2 inches of rain in Omaha yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is becoming more and
more puzzled at all of the things going on in her abode. Our little 9-
month old great grandson is now with us for a while and he is very
adventurous already. He discovered the little tiny cowbell hanging
from the back doorknob that is the exclusive property of Molly when
she needs to go potty. Brandon discovered the bell and was boxing it
like a prizefighter. Molly went racing to the back door to see what
in the world was taking place. She stood there wide- eyed and
astounded that someone else was using her bell. She is also spending
more and more time sitting on my desk trying to get some extra quiet
time. She is also having to grab naps in shorter spurts. Life goes on
and I know how she feels......

...Happy Columbus Day...

Sunday was a very warm , arguably hot day across Central Alabama.
Temperatures were some 10 to 15 degrees above normal, approaching
record levels for the date. It was 90F at the Birmingham Airport,
just three degrees shy of the record. The mercury reached 90F at
nearly all of the records across the northern half of the state.
Pinson did establish a record with a high of 91F, as did 90F at
Anniston. .

IN THE NATIONAL RECORD BIN: I counted at least three dozen records
yesterday. Some of the notable records included Chicago-O'Hare with
87F; 93F at Evansville, IN; 87F at Morganton, WV; 90F at Peoria, IL;
91F at Georgetown, NJ; 91F at Roanoke, VA and 90F at South Bend.
The 83F at Beckley, WV was their warmest all-time October record. It
has only been 90F twice before yesterday in Indianapolis in October.
Additional records will be broken over the next couple of days as the
high pressure ridge over the Eastern U.S. grudgingly gives way.

DROUGHT WORSENING: Measurable rain has not fallen in Birmingham
since September 14th. We have had five days with trace amounts since
then, but nothing greater. Meanwhile, the drought continues to
worsen. 52 percent of the state is experiencing exceptional drought
conditions. The exceptional drought area covers roughly the eastern
half of the state including Huntsville, Gadsden, Anniston, Birmingham
and Montgomery. A full 100 percent of the state is experiencing
drought. Some rainfall deficits for the year include: -23.12 at
Huntsville, -16.24 at Muscle Shoals; -26.83 at Anniston; -25.86 at
Tuscaloosa and -14.87 at Mobile.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Partly cloudy skies today with only the tiniest
chance of a shower. A front will approach on Tuesday, triggering a
chance of showers and storms. Behind the front, drier air will
filter in along with some more normal temperature readings. Highs
will fall back into the upper 70s to lower 80s and lows will be in
the 50s. The models have been consistently pointing to a nice
rainfall event here around the 19th of October.

TROPICS: A tropical depression may well form in the next day or so
over the northwestern Caribbean north of Honduras. The models are
generally in good agreement that it would move northwest, cross the
Yucatan and enter the Bay of Campeche. The disturbance north of
Puerto Rico and another east of the islands each show no promise for
development due to wind shear.

ON THIS DATE IN 1837: The remnants of Racer's Storm moved off the
South Carolina coast and headed back into the open Atlantic where it
intensified. Off Cape Hatteras, the paddle wheeler Home was sunk.
There were only two life preservers onboard. The tragedy prompted
Congress to make a law requiring all American boats to have one life
preserver onboard for every passenger, a law that is still in effect
today.

...Flirting With Records..

You can't complain about the beautiful summerlike weather across
Central Alabama on this October Sunday afternoon. With partly cloudy
skies and warm temperatures, it feels more like late August than
October. But we need rain here in Alabama, and unfortunately, the
prospects do not look good in the near future.

FLIRTING WITH RECORD HIGHS: Highs this afternoon are edging up to
near 90 degrees across the area. The record high of 93F at
Birmingham is not in danger, but we will we on record watch tomorrow
and quite likely on Tuesday with records of 91F each day. Highs
tomorrow and Tuesday should be right around 90F again.

NEXT WEATHER SYSTEM: It is a case of the irresistible force meeting
the immovable object. A sprawling, strong upper level high is
centered over the Southeast. Meanwhile, a powerful upper level
system is over the Rocky Mountain states today with a deep upper
trough and upper low moving eastward. This system will swing
northeast, forcing the ridge to retreat westward over the week ahead.

The bowling ball of an upper low will ride up and over the ridge and
head toward the Mid-Atlantic States after midweek, carving out a
trough over the East. This will lead to some cooler temperatures for
the end of the week and weekend. The transition will be marked by a
cool front that will move through the area on Tuesday. While shower
and storm chances will increase on Tuesday, they will not be likely,
and the backside of the upper low will keep the Gulf at bay through
the remainder of the week and weekend.

TROPICS: Our headline disturbance is an elongated low pressure
system over the northwestern Caribbean. This is the time of year for
systems to form in the western Caribbean for sure. Pressures have
been dropping in the region and are quite low now, a good sign
something is cooking. Wind shear is light and sea surface
temperatures are warm, so look for a tropical depression to form here
in the next couple of days. The hurricane hunters are scheduled to
investigate on Monday. Three distinct scenarios possible here. It
hangs around over the western Caribbean ala Mitch and becomes a
significant hurricane. 2. It moves northwestward into the Yucatan,
possibly as a depression or tropical storm. 3. It could get picked
up by our trough swinging east, ushering it northeast toward Cuba,
South Florida and the Bahamas. We will have to wait and see. The
other two active areas of interest in the Atlantic are disorganized
and do not show signs of development. One is north of Puerto Rico
and one is about 500 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: No one was complaining about the unusually
warm temperatures in the 80s in North Dakota, except the beet
growers. Harvesting had to be stopped because temperatures were too
warm and could cause the beets to spoils after they were pulled from
the ground.

...Near Record Warmth...

Good morning! Hard to believe this is October, at least according to
the thermometer. With overnight lows dropping only to around 70 in
most locations this morning, it feels more like August than fall. A
summery 588 dkm upper level high is parked squarely over the South,
anchoring a huge ridge in the east. An equally impressive upper
level trough and closed low is over the Rocky Mountain States. That
type of high amplitude pattern is a sign of the change of the
seasons. A battleground is set up between the two systems. Warm,
moist air extends all the way up into the Upper Midwest today, where
highs will be some 25 degrees above normal today and more records
will fall.

RECORD HIGHS POSSIBLE HERE: The high will remain in control of
Alabama's weather through tomorrow, and will only begrudgingly give
way on Tuesday. But probably not before we have two days of near
record highs to start the week. We will be short of today's record
of 93F, but 91F on Monday and Tuesday will be in jeopardy as we are
expecting highs close to 90F.

FRONT TO BRING RAIN? As our western trough moves out into the
Plains and Midwest, it will propel a cold front toward Alabama. A
few showers and storms will pop up on Monday with the heating of the
day and ahead of the front. There will be a better chance of showers
and storms will precede the front on Tuesday, most likely late in the
day into the overnight. The front should clear the area by Wednesday
morning, and hump day will be characterized by clearing skies and
lower humidity. I am reluctant to get my hopes up, but we might see
some respectably cooler readings by the weekend.

The models are saying middle 50s Thursday, Friday and Saturday
mornings. Highs will be in the upper 70s. If this pans out, we will
be close to normal for early October. Looking in the crystal ball,
this week's rain chances might be our last through the third week of
the month as our drought continues to worsen.

TROPICS: Disturbance number one is north of Puerto Rico, moving
slowly northwestward. Conditions do not appear favorable for any
development, although something could eventually come out of this
area. If it does, it will eventually head northeastward out to
sea. A stationary area of disturbed weather is over the
northwestern Caribbean. It is in an area that is climatologically
favored and environment conditions are favorable also. This system
could eventually head back northeastward also. Disturbance three is
several hundred miles east of the Lesser Antilles. It is battling
strong wind shear as it moves slowly northwestward. Conditions could
become more favorable for development as it advances, but nothing
major is expected to come of this system. Finally, a disturbance way
over by the Azores is getting into some cold water and chances for
subtropical or tropical development are just about gone.

ON THIS DATE IN 1737: What is quite possibly the deadliest tropical
cyclone in world history occurred on this date in 1737 when a severe
cyclone swept up the Bay of Bengal. It produced a forty foot storm
surge that swept up the mouth of the Hooghly River 300,000 people
died in the disaster.
