It's time to turn the page again on another month on the old calendar
on the wall. July is history and August is front and center. On
average, August is less than a half of a degree cooler than July, with
the average high still above 90F. So there is plenty of additional hot
weather to go, despite the fact that the days are getting shorter as
the sun makes its southward trek.
WEEKEND FORECAST: Our surface boundary made it down to the I-20
corridor today before stalling out. Behind the front, slightly drier
air over North Alabama will limit showers and storm development today.
But we will still be under the influence of a broad trough over the
eastern United States, and passing disturbances may trigger additional
storm clusters at times through the weekend. There are indications
that we will see active showers and storms tonight and Sunday as a
fairly potent upper level disturbance swings by.

THE WEEK AHEAD: It looks like drier will be the weather word as we
head toward Monday and Tuesday. There still could be isolated storms
those days, though. Moisture levels will be back on the rise by
midweek, and scattered showers and storms will be in the forecast for
the latter half of the week into the weekend. Temperatures will be
heating up.

TROPICS: A strong disturbance is pushing across Africa right now. It
will move into and across the Atlantic in the week ahead. The global
forecast models don't indicate any development with this system. The
GFS does pick up on a strong wave in about ten days, but if its
placement of the Bermuda high is correct, the system should stay well
east of the islands and the U.S.

BEACH FORECAST: Our run of good weather on the Northwest Florida coast
finally came to an end on Friday afternoon as a nice line of storms
arrived late in the day. If you are lucky enough to be squeezing in a
beach trip next week before school starts, expect a chance of showers
and storms each day, but no all day rainouts. Temperatures will be
seasonable, with highs around 90 and lows in the lower and middle 70s.

WEATHERBRAINS: WeatherBrains episode 184 was recorded last night.
Veteran storm chaser Dave Hoadley joined the gang for a riveting look
back at his 53 years chasing. Dave was chasing long before chasing was
cool. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com to listen, or subscribe at iTines.
Follow the show on Twitter @WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1861: Captain Robert Fitz-Roy initiated a daily
weather forecast for the following day for several regions of England.
The service was well received by the public, but people in scientific
circles criticized the effort saying that it lacked scientific merit.
Fitz-Roy used data telegraphed the Meteorological Department in London
from 15 stations across the country each morning. Disturbed by the
criticism, Fitz-Roy killed himself less than 4 years later. Follow my
weather history tweets on Twitter. I am wxhistorian.

...Chance of Storms Daily...

CLOSING OUT JULY: July has not been like July across Alabama this
year. It appears that July is going to extend into August as far as
weather behavior is concerned.

Probably the most significant change is that we will not have quite as
many thunderstorms over the next several days and rain amounts will
not be as much as we have had the past week. A new batch of showers
and thunderstorms moved into Alabama late last night and in the wee
morning hours today. They were slow movers, but produced some locally
heavy rain and there was lots of lightning. A bit later, a second line
formed behind the first one and it became the main event. That second
broad and irregular line of storms had pushed all the way into SE
Alabama this afternoon and approximately the NW 2/3 of the state was
getting a break from the constant rumble of thunder.

We will still have a chance of a shower or thunderstorm tonight. We
believe a good part of Saturday morning and early afternoon may be
relatively dry. We do expect some more scattered showers and storms
increasing in number, however, late Saturday afternoon and overnight.
Another day with a good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday,
but fewer in number on Monday. The old thermometer will heat up some
by Monday afternoon and Tuesday getting into the lower 90s and we do
not expect hardly any thunderstorms on Tuesday.

It is going to be interesting to see final July rain totals from
around the state. We believe that the topsoil over much of Alabama is
now soaked. During the last 24 hours, some communities were cheated,
but a lot of others got substantial rain. Some of the lighter amounts
were Marion, Childersburg, Clanton and Centreville and some of the
heaviest amounts included 1.65 in downtown Ft. Payne, 1.96 in
Albertville, 1.70 in Boaz and 2.12 in Weaver.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Same old story in the Tropics. Still no
sign of our first named storm that will be Ana. So, we are completing
the first two months of the hurricane season without a named storm.
Quite unusual. Along the Alabama/NW Florida beaches, a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms again Saturday and scattered ones each day
into early next week. It will not be an all-day rain, but the best
chance will be on Saturday. High temperatures along the immediate
beach area—88 to 90.

FINAL THOUGHTS: Lots of unusual weather to close out July. That 102
high in Seattle a couple of days ago was indeed history in the making.
It was their hottest of all time. In Iowa, Cedar Rapids went through
the entire month with not a single day having a high temperature above
the average. Pretty much the same story in Iowa City in Moline,
Illinois. More bad weather along the Atlantic Seaboard into New
England. Severe Thunderstorm Watches were in effect this afternoon all
the way from North Carolina to New York City and Connecticut. Hot spot
yesterday Death Valley with 121. Coolest this morning 35 in Stanley,
Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Day before yesterday I had 4 major
ballgames with Little Miss Molly after skipping several days. That
little rascal has become dependent on a lot more games and she is
constantly reminding me that it is time for the first pitch. She has
one ball, a little spiked blue ball, which stands out as her favorite.
Wherever I throw it in the room, she will race and get it and come
rushing back and throw it at me. This morning, while I was resting in
my favorite chair, I suddenly found that little ball against my shoe.
It was another hint. She took a long nap late yesterday with the
little blue ball resting right by her cheek. Okay, Molly, I get the
hint. Life goes on.

...Wet At Times Through Sunday...

OCCASIONAL SHOWERS AND STORMS: The overall weather pattern across
Alabama won't change much through the weekend. A deep layer of
moisture stays in place, and with a broad upper trough axis still to
the west, we will maintain a good chance showers and storms in the
forecast through Sunday. Like recent days, the rain won't be
continuous, and the sun will pop out from behind the clouds at times,
but a shower or storm is possible at just about any hour of the day or
night. Additional rain totals of 1 to 2 inches are likely between now
and Sunday night, and isolated spots could see more. And, like the
past few days, a few storms could be strong to severe, but a major
severe weather threat is not expected. Temperatures will remain below
average, with highs mostly in the mid to upper 80s through the
weekend. We should be in the low 90s this time of the year.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: We expect showers and storms to be fewer in
number next week with hotter afternoons, but the hottest weather in
the nation should remain west of Alabama, and we will maintain some
risk of scattered, mostly afternoon showers and storms on a daily
basis. Afternoon highs next week should be close to 90 in most
locations.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: Expect about 3 to 5 hours of sunshine today,
tomorrow, and Sunday with scattered to numerous showers and storms.
Next week should be brighter with 6 to 8 hours of sunshine by Monday
and Tuesday. But, even then, there will be some risk of a few passing
showers or storms. Afternoon highs for the next five days or so will
be in the mid to upper 80s along the immediate coast, with low 90s
inland. And, no sign of any tropical storm formation across the
Atlantic basin through early next week.

COOL JULY: The temperature failed to reach 90 degrees on 16 days
during the month of July, which is pretty remarkable for Alabama in
mid-summer. The hottest temperature recorded during the month of 94
degrees, which was measured on July 1, 4, and 12. The lowest
temperature all month was a cool 59 degrees on July 20.

MID-SOUTH STORMS: A tornado touched down in the eastern part of the
Memphis area yesterday afternoon, near the intersection of Germantown
Road and I-40. A number of businesses were damaged, cars were
overturned, and homes had trees fall on them. Another tornado touched
town in Olive Branch, MS where 8 homes were destroyed and 50 homes
damaged near US-78. No serious injuries were reported from these
severe storms.

IN ALABAMA: Thunderstorm winds gusted to 70 mph at Arley in Winston
County, and some tree and power line damage was also reported in
several other counties over the northern third of our state. Dime to
penny sized hail was reported near Winfield, and power outages were
reported around the Huntsville area in Madison County.

...More Unsettled Weather...

WET AND STORMY: Well, which do you prefer? Hot, humid and hazy with a
few afternoon storms or weather like we have had lately where it is
not very hot, with no haze, but catching up on rain amounts. Too many
showers and storms lately to even have any haze and our temperatures
have persistently stayed below the 90-degree mark during the afternoon.

Now it seems as if we are having a whole series of thunderstorm
clusters marching our way from the Plains and Texas. They seem to
gather in big clusters and head our way. We had a number of
thunderstorms last night. They diminished late. Another cluster moved
in before daybreak and they were mostly gone this afternoon. Off to
the west, though, we have a lot more thunderstorms and showers to deal
with for at least the next two days.

The storms overnight dumped 1.48 inches of rain in the old Cahaba
section of Helena, 3.10 in Talladega, 2.42 in Alexander City and 0.77
at Meadowbrook in North Shelby County. In Talladega County, Munford
got 2.24 inches.

SEVERE WEATHER THREAT: In their updated discussion late this morning,
the NWS/Storm Prediction Center included all of Alabama in a Slight
Risk of severe weather. Pretty much the same for all of Louisiana and
Mississippi. We are going to be very busy watching those families of
thunderstorms rolling through Alabama for the next couple of days, at
least. Even on Sunday, we will still have some thunderstorms, but
mostly in the afternoon. We think they will be fewer in number by
Monday, maybe only a 1 in 3 chance.
The ground is pretty much soaked, so do not be surprised at all if we
have a few flash flood warnings before this episode is over later
tomorrow. NWS/Huntsville did post a Flash Flood Watch for extreme
North Alabama.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: Not the best of weather for your last
minute dash to the Alabama/NW Florida beaches. Showers and
thunderstorms will be increasing tonight and numerous at times during
the day Friday. A good chance of showers and storms on Saturday,
scattered ones on Sunday, but decreasing in number on Monday. High
temperatures 88 during the stormy times and low 90s by Monday. In the
Tropics, still no sign of Ana, so we are finishing the first two
months of hurricane season with not a single named storm in the
Atlantic Basin.

ROAMING THE COUNTRYSIDE: Numerous reports of high wind across North
and Central Texas overnight. Several reports of gusts to 70. We had
one report of a gust over 100 mph at Childress, Texas. We are not
certain of the accuracy. For the second time in about a week, the NWS/
New York issued a Tornado Warning for part of the area. Very unusual.
106 was the high in Portland yesterday and 103 in Seattle. That is the
highest temperature ever in Seattle with records dating back before
1900. Hottest yesterday 125 in Death Valley. Low this morning, 30 in
Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After four days in a row with no
ballgames, my pal, Little Miss Molly, booby-trapped me late last
night. I was dozing in my favorite chair. She brought her favorite
ball and slammed it down on my foot. She glared at me as if to say,
either play ball with me or I am leaving town. I obeyed and I do not
think I have ever seen her more excited. I would throw the ball all
the way across the living area. She would outrun it, grab it and come
racing back to me for a repeat. She must have gotten spoiled, because
twice on the way to get coffee in the kitchen this morning, she
grabbed a ball and tried to block my path. I hereby pledge to not miss
a single day of having at least a brief game with her. Life goes on.

...Unsettled Weather Continues...

KEEP THE RAIN GEAR HANDY: Our weather pattern will remain fairly wet
through Saturday, thanks to a deep upper trough over the eastern half
of the nation, and a deep layer of moisture that is locked in place
across Alabama and the Deep South. We will continue to forecast
occasional showers and thunderstorms through Saturday, with potential
for an additional three inches of rain statewide. For now the chance
of severe weather still looks small, but we would not be shocked to
see a few flash flood warnings along the way due to the heavier
downpours. And, like recent days, temperatures will remain below
average, with highs in the mid 80s for most places.

THE WEEKEND: While showers and storms remain likely Saturday, they
should begin to thin out a bit Sunday and Monday as an upper air ridge
begins to rebuild across the southern U.S. Looks like afternoon highs
next week will be close to 90 degrees with some risk of scattered,
mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms on a daily basis.

GULF COAST WEATHER: You will have to dodge a few passing showers and
thunderstorms each day through Sunday, but there will be around 3 to 5
hours of sunshine each day. Afternoon highs will be in the mid to
upper 80s along the immediate coast, and the sea water temperature
last night at the Dauphin Island Lea Lab was 85 degrees. And, once
again, the tropical Atlantic basin is very quiet and you won't have to
worry about tropical storms or hurricanes in coming days.

WEDNESDAY'S RAIN: Some of the heavier rain totals around Alabama
yesterday included 2.80" at Clanton (ABC 33/40 Skycam location), 2.60"
at Moundville, 2.17" at Plantersville, 1.45" at Alexander City, 1.13"
at Auburn, 1.07" at the Shelby County Airport in Calera, and 1.03" at
Mobile.

SEATTLE HEAT: Temperatures soared into three digits around Western
Washington yesterday afternoon, hitting a record 102 degrees at
Seattle-Tacoma International Airport between 2 and 3 p.m. Other
Weather Service readings included 102 in Kenmore and Puyallup, 101 in
Bellevue and Seattle's University District and 100 degrees in Renton
and Lake Forest Park. It was the hottest day on record at Seattle.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...More Thunderstorms...

SEVERAL MORE DAYS OF STORMS: We have drifted into a set routine of
having showers and thunderstorms every single day. They were numerous
yesterday afternoon and last evening. By early this morning, the main
storms had drifted down to Central Alabama and they slowed their
southward movement. This prompted the NWS to issue a flash flood watch
for a number of South Central Alabama counties.

Meanwhile, the entire North half of the state had an extended break
from showers and storms almost all day. The sun even came out in many
areas. We can't enjoy that very long because we are not through with
stormy weather. Those scattered storms continued over extreme South
Alabama this afternoon. Meanwhile, a new cluster of thunderstorms over
Central Mississippi and Arkansas were increasing in number and
strength this afternoon. Those will be spreading into North and
Central Alabama late today and tonight. They were producing locally
heavy rain.

We posted a long list of 24-hour rain amounts on the 33/40 Weather
Blog but here is a brief sampling of some of the heavier amounts:

2.90 Northport
1.13 Anniston Airport
1.45 Mobile/Brookley Field
3.09 Alexander City

Not only will showers and thunderstorms return tonight, but they will
be prominent in our weather picture tomorrow and Friday when they may
be numerous at times. We still expect scattered ones through the
weekend but fewer in number. It is not out of the question for much of
Central Alabama to receive between 2 and 3 inches of additional rain
before the weather settles down.

AT THE BEACH: Surely there will be a large number of people slipping
off for a late getaway to the beach since summer vacation is almost
over. Not the most ideal weather but neither will there be an all day
rain. There will be scattered thunderstorms each day with Friday
having more than any other day. There will be several hours of
sunshine each day with high temperatures along the immediate beach
area around 88.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The tropics are quiet. No sign at all of Ana, which
will be our first named storm of the season. It is fairly unusual to
go this late in the season without a named storm.

SEATTLE: That big city was expecting a high of 100 today, virtually
unheard of. Ironically, snow was forecast above the 14,000-foot level
on Mt. Rainier. Portland, the biggest city in Oregon, has a blistering
106 yesterday and 107 was expected today. Hottest in the US yesterday,
was 125 in Death Valley and coolest this morning, 39 at Stanley,
Idaho. Statewide, the state of Iowa is headed for the coolest
July in weather history. In Des Moines, it has been 90 only one time
this month.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I am determined one morning very soon
when I automatically wake up at 5:00 to reach over and give Little
Miss Molly a three minute belly rub, get her out of bed, and spend two
or three hours doing anything she wants to do. She would be ready for
a ball game the minute her feet hit the floor. Then we could go on a
slow long walk and stay outdoors an hour or two. She would enjoy that
to no end. Life goes on. – J. B. Elliott

OCCASIONAL SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS: An unusual mid-summer rain event
continues to unfold for Alabama and the southern U.S. through Friday,
thanks to a strong upper trough over the eastern half of the nation.
Occasional lobes of energy rotate through the big trough, producing
upward air motion, and accordingly rounds of showers and
thunderstorms. It still looks like many Alabama communities will wind
up with three inch storm totals by Friday night, with potential for
over 5 inches in isolated spots. A few flash flood warnings could be
needed before the week is over. A few strong storms are possible at
times, but major severe weather problems are not anticipated at this
time.
In addition to getting beneficial rain, another positive with this
pattern is cooler than average daytime temperatures. We are
forecasting highs only in the mid 80s, and where rain arrives during
the morning, some places could hold in the 70s all day. A good example
yesterday was Muscle Shoals, where the high was only 77 degrees. That
is 14 degrees below average for this time of the year.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND: An upper ridge tries to rebuild across the
Deep South, but moist air remains in place, so we will have dodge at
least scattered showers and storms on both Saturday and Sunday. Looks
like highs generally in the upper 80s over the weekend with a few
intervals of sunshine away from the showers.

AT THE BEACH: Only 3 to 5 hours of sunshine each day through Friday
with a good chance of showers and storms. Look for a little more sun
over the weekend as the showers and storms become more widely
separated. No need to worry about hurricanes or tropical storms since
the Atlantic basin remains very quiet.

ACTIVE TUESDAY: Tornadoes are rare in Alabama during July and August,
and almost every time they do happen this time of the year, it
involves a tropical system. But yesterday, tornado warnings were
issued for parts of Pickens and Tuscaloosa counties in West Alabama
during the late afternoon hours. There was one report of a funnel
cloud west of Reform, but no damage was reported.

NO SUMMER IN CHICAGO: 2009 has seen the coldest July in Chicago since
the official recording station was moved away from the lakefront in
1942. The average temperature this month in Chicago has been a mere
68.9 degrees. Even in the years before 1942, when the National Weather
Service recorded temperatures at the cooler lakefront, there are only
three years that had colder Julys through the 26th.

ON THIE DATE IN 1992: A tornado hit Big Delta, Alaska. This was the
first tornado to touch down in Alaska since 1979. The last recorded
tornado Alaska was in 2005 when a tornado touched down near Sand
Point, which is on Popof Island, one of a dozen or so Shumagin Islands
570 miles southwest of Anchorage near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula
and the start of the Aleutian Chain.

...More Showers And Storms...

WET IS THE WEATHER WORD: Showers and storms have been a bit slow
spreading into Alabama today, but this afternoon they were increasing,
especially over the southern third of the state. To our west, a line
of showers and thunderstorms, north to south through Central
Mississippi, was advancing eastward. Bottom line: our weather is going
to be on the wet side for the next several days.

The NWS/Storm Prediction Center continues a Slight Risk of severe
weather in North and Central Alabama from about Montgomery northward
for tonight. Also, do not be surprised to see a few flash flood
warnings overnight in the heavier rain areas. An upper-air low-
pressure trough, not a major one, was approaching the state this
afternoon. Some of the most plentiful moist air was over Mississippi
and Louisiana this afternoon. That will be shifting east and enhancing
our chance of getting some heavy rain amounts.

HOW MUCH RAIN: Some of our guidance points to as much as 4 to 5
inches over parts of North and West Alabama. We have sort of settled
on 3.50 to 4 inches across this part of North/Central Alabama. That is
the total that goes all the way through Saturday. We believe there
will be a good chance of showers and thunderstorms each day,
especially through Friday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Still no sign of Ana. You can always find a few
tropical waves out in the Atlantic this time of year. It is
interesting to note that a series of low-pressure areas moving
westward across Africa is a sign that the Cape Verde season of
tropical storms could be heating up soon. Some of those lows slide off
into the Eastern Atlantic already fairly well formed.

AT THE BEACH: No telling how many people will want to be at the beach
this weekend as summer vacations slowly come to a halt. There is a
good chance of showers and thunderstorms each day through Friday. They
may decrease some on Saturday. Highs will be in the upper 80s.

INDIANAPOLIS: That big city, right in the heart of Indiana, is one of
many in the Midwest and Northeast experiencing a relatively cool
summer. Their average high for July so far was 78.6. They have had
only 1 day out of the last 27 when the temperature was above average.
Around the rest of the country, 118 in Bullhead City, Arizona was the
hottest yesterday. In search of some cool temperatures, it was 39 in
Yellowstone National Park and Barrow, Alaska. It was 91 below zero at
Vostok, Antarctica. Major flash flooding this morning at Atlanta in NE
Texas with water in homes, people were evacuated and there were high-
water rescues. Texarkana 5.25 inches of rain today. 3.50 inches SW of
Jackson caused part of a roof to collapse injuring one person.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I am so busy that I wish Molly
would take her morning walk quickly. No such luck this morning. I
counted her movements and she left the walking track 27 times because
she sniffed something as much as 30 feet away. I am near certain the
little Community Rabbit was fooling around our back door last night.
Molly went berserk when we started our walk running in circles with
her nose practically in the grass gathering information. If I could
smell as good as Molly, I could probably smell a paper mill 100 miles
away. Life goes on.

...Beneficial Rain Possible Through Friday...

OUR WEATHER TURNING WET: Sure looks like an excellent chance for
beneficial rain for Alabama for the next three to five days. There is
good potential for over three inches of rain for most communities,
with totals over five inches in spots between now and Friday. It
usually takes a hurricane or tropical storm to generate these kind of
rain totals in our state this time of the year. An unusually strong
upper trough for mid-summer lingers over the eastern half of the
nation this week, and a series of waves riding through the trough will
bring periods of showers and thunderstorms. The rain won't be
continuous, and the sun should peek through at times, but our weather
sure looks wet through the end of the week. And, with the clouds and
rain, daytime temperatures will remain below average, with highs
mostly in the mid 80s.

A few strong storms are possible along the way, but for now we don't
expect a major severe weather threat due to limited instability values
with marginal wind fields.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: High pressure aloft will try to build across Alabama
and the Deep South over the weekend, so showers and storms could be a
little more scattered on Saturday and Sunday with afternoon highs in
the upper 80s, possibly touching 90 in spots.

TROPICAL WEATHER UPDATE: An amazing quiet pattern continues across the
Atlantic basin, and much of the tropical oceans globally, and tropical
storm formation around here is not expected through the rest of the
week. But, remember the core of the season is yet to come; tropical
activity usually peaks in August, September, and early October.

PEAK OF THE SUMMER HEAT: Based on long term weather averages, this is
the hottest part of the summer in Alabama. Our average high is 91, and
the average low is 70 from July 13 through August 10. The average low
drops one degree, to 69, on August 11. For a real cool thought, the
average high drops to 70, and the average low 46 at the end of October
on Halloween, during the middle of the "golden days of fall".

2009 RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year so far is
36.03", giving us a surplus of two and a half inches (2.49" to be
exact).
The rain total for the month of July is 6.45", and we will be adding
to those numbers each day for the rest of the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1819: Bay St. Louis Hurricane makes landfall on the
Mississippi Coast. The storm was the worst in 50 years and devastated
the same area that hurricane Camille would strike almost exactly 150
years later. 39 crew members of the U.S. Man-of-War Firebrand were
lost when the schooner was sunk by the storm.

...Make Way For Thunderstorms...

A SIGNIFICANT ALABAMA WET PERIOD: A lot of weather parameters are
getting into an agreement to bring Alabama a substantial amount of
rain over the next several days. So much so that some parts of the
state, especially over the north and central part, could receive
somewhere between 3 and 5 inches. Some of our computerized guidance
points to more than 5 inches this week over NW Alabama. We do not
always swallow that guidance hook, line and sinker, but it is a useful
starting point for estimates. Be sure and check our day-by-day
forecast to get more complete details. In our latest forecast going
through next Friday, we have estimated a total of 4 inches of rain for
North/Central Alabama, generally along the I-20 corridor. We will be
able to better define this in the Tuesday morning edition. There is
also a good chance of showers and storms down south where rain totals
have not been that great. Through this morning, Montgomery has
received 3.61 inches of rain so far in July and Mobile 3.35. This in
contrast to 6.09 inches in Huntsville and 6.44 in Birmingham.

There could be some thunderstorms developing late today and this
evening, but we believe they will become more numerous as the day goes
on Tuesday and then a good chance every day all the way through the
weekend. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center does not have our area
outlined for a slight risk through Wednesday. In a situation like
this, we could have a few storms that require warnings and do not be
surprised to see some flash flood warnings over the next few days.

TROPICAL AND BEACH WEATHER: It is too bad that with summer vacation
drawing to a close, that showers and thunderstorms along the Alabama/
NW Florida beaches will be numerous at times, at least through
Wednesday, and scattered ones each day beyond that. High temperatures
will be in the upper 80s along the immediate coast. Water temperatures
are plenty warm—mostly in the mid 80s. The Tropics continue quiet.
There is no hint of Ana (our first named storm).

ARICA, CHILE: This is our entry point of choice to discuss a few
global notes. Did you know that this town in the extreme northern
Atachama Desert of Chile only gets an average of 0.02 per year and
they once went 14 years without a drop? Back in the good old USA, New
York City got 1.30 inches of rain Sunday and they still have not had
90 degrees all year as their very cool summer continues. All the way
across the country, Phoenix has been above 100 all 26 days of July so
far with an average daily high of 109. Only 1/3 inch of rain this month
—most of that in one shower. They expect 114 the next couple of days.
Hottest yesterday 122 in Death Valley. Coolest this morning 60 in
Yellowstone National Park.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly did not get much
playtime over the weekend. I think the entire household ran out of
steam and just wanted to rest. The great grandchildren went back to
Russellville, which has given Molly time for some long daytime naps.
With our grandkids sleeping in the living area at night, Molly wants
to stay all night with them. Last night was typical. When I took Molly
for a midnight walk, she then refused a treat because she knew I would
take her to bed immediately thereafter. Instead, she hid behind my
chair against the bookcases and then hid under my coffee table. I
finally grabbed her and took her to the king-sized bed. She snuggled
against me all night—maybe to win some points. Life goes on.

...Showers and Storms Make Their Return...

The expected showers and thunderstorms did not materialize really as
we expected on Sunday. A couple of factors were at play. Number one,
the front did not start moving southeastward until the evening hours.
Second, a canopy of cirrus overspread the northwest half of the state
by late morning, slowing down the heating process northwest of I-59.
Some storms did form over South Central Alabama, prompting a few
severe thunderstorm warnings. Storms formed toward midnight and will
continue this morning ahead of another disturbance.
STORMS TODAY: Expect a chance of showers and storms through early
afternoon today as the disturbance passes. The better chance will be
south of I-20. More showers and storms will form on Tuesday, when rain
chances could be pretty good. But if you look at Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday, you would have to say there is a good chance on those days
as well. The GFS predicts that one to two inches of rain will fall on
average over the next five days. The folks in Washington at the HPC
think it will be more like 4-6 inches. Many spots, especially over
eastern sections and western sections of the state will be grateful
for the rains.

WORKING FOR THE WEEKEND: It's more of the same as we head toward the
weekend, with scattered to numerous showers and storms both days with
a warm, moist airmass remaining in place.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 183: Did the Internet ruin weather? That's the
theory of tonight's WeatherBrains guest Tony Pann. He recently
authored a book titled "How to Find a Good Weather Forecast." The show
will be posted by late tonight on WeatherBrains.com and on iTunes. Get
the latest daily news and notes about the podcast that's all about
weather by going to www.Twitter.com/WeatherBrains. Learn about future
guests and get special show information.

ON THIS DATE IN 1943: A hurricane struck the Houston-Galveston area of
Texas, killing 19 and causing significant property damage. The storm
was said to be the worst since 1915. Winds gusted to 132 mph at
Ellington Field in Houston with the lowest pressure of 28.78 inches.
The news of this hurricane was heavily censored by the government due
to national security. The loss of production of war materials couldn't
be disclosed to the Axis Powers. This was 1943 and the tides in both
the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of war were finally starting to
turn. There was a report that the FBI shut down the telegraph office
in La Porte because someone had sent a telegram out of the state
informing someone of the damages from the hurricane. The only news of
the hurricane was published in the two states that were affected,
Texas and Louisiana.

After this hurricane, never again were advisories censored from the
public. War or no war, the risk to human life is too great. This
hurricane is famous for an important first. More about it on
AlabamaWX.com blog. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian.

...Need Rain?...

Most lawns in the Birmingham metro area are pretty green right now.
But you get much east of I-65 all the way over to the Georgia border,
and it's a different story. The lawn and garden moisture index is in
the red, indicating lawns and gardens needs 0.5 to 2 inches of water
right now. Hopefully we will get some today and over the next few days.

SHOWERS AND STORMS: Showers and thunderstorms are firing ahead of a
weak cool front that is sinking south into Alabama on this Sunday.
Some of the storms will potentially be strong to severe through the
evening hours and into the overnight. The main threat will be strong
winds. Don't forget the threat of lightning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The frontal system will settle down into North
Alabama on Monday, stalling somewhere near or just north of I-20.
North Alabama will likely get a break on Monday with the best chance
for showers and storms near or south of I-20. Scattered showers and
storms will be in the forecast through the remainder of the week.

IN THE TROPICS: No disturbances in the Atlantic look to be a threat
to develop into tropical cyclones over the next couple of days. In
fact, the GFS doesn't pick up on anything right now during the next
two weeks. But we will be moving into the heart of the Atlantic
hurricane season over the next 60 days, and we will be watching things
carefully.

LATE START: The 2004 Atlantic hurricane season did not begin until
July 31st, when Alex formed. It looks like we will be later than that
this year. The 2000 season didn't start until 8/3 when Alberto
formed. The 1992 hurricane season started very late. It didn't kick
off until August 16th, when a tropical depression formed from a
tropical wave in the mid-Atlantic. It would steam west northwestward,
eventually becoming a monster hurricane. Its name? Andrew. The
latest season start since 1970 came in 1977, when Hurricane Anita did
not form
until August 29th.

FLORIDA TORNADOES: An unusual set of circumstances resulted in some
damaging tornadoes along the East Coast of Florida Friday night. A
menacing looking waterspout moved onshore near Ormond Beach, resulting
in some dramatic photos, but not much damage. A separate tornado
occurred at Port Orange, destroying 7 manufactured homes, heavily
damaging 8 more, and damaging 152 others. There was one injury. The
rotating storms were set into motion by colliding sea breeze fronts,
one from t he Gulf and the other from the Atlantic. Daytona
television stations actually had to do wall to wall coverage for a
couple of hours.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Hurricane Danny dissipated on this date. No
other named tropical cyclone would be present in the Atlantic for the
next 38 days, lasting throughout August. 1961 was the only other year
since aircraft reconnaissance flights began in the 1940s to have no
Atlantic tropical storms in the month of August. If you enjoy
historical weather information, follow my weather tweets. I am

...Showers and Storms Make Their Return...

Showers and thunderstorms will return to the forecast across Central
Alabama today ahead of an approaching cool front. They will be in
the forecast for the next few days as that boundary and a series of
shortwave troughs move across the area.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: We will start off partly cloudy across the area this
morning. Clouds will increase as we head through the morning, and
showers and storms will develop. The boundary will push into
Northwest Alabama later today and into Central sections of the state
overnight, with showers and storms continuing into the early morning
hours. It appears that the front will settle over South Central
Alabama on Monday, keeping a better chance of showers and storms going
to the south of Birmingham.

REST OF THE WEEK: The boundary will meander back and forth a bit as t
he tug of war between the Bermuda high to the east and a persistent
trough over the eastern half of the U.S. continues. Disturbances
swinging through the trough will lead to periods of increased shower
and thunderstorm activity at times through the week ahead. There are
signs that a fairly wet pattern will continue across Alabama for much
of the next two weeks.

BEACH FORECAST: Scattered showers and thunderstorms will occur along
the Gulf Coast through Tuesday, before a large surface ridge builds
across the northern Gulf. Highs will be in the upper 80s to near 90
degrees. Lows will be in the lower and middle 70s.

TROPICS: Two disturbances traversing the Atlantic on this Sunday
morning. One tropical wave is about 300 miles east of the Windward
Islands. The other is about 1,300 miles east of the Lesser Antilles.
Much of the Atlantic is covered by extremely dry air, which has been
the case for the Atlantic hurricane season so far. The global models
are still not hinting at any tropical cyclone development over the
next two weeks as we continue to wait on the appearance of Ana.

WEATHERBRAINS: Earlier this week, I had the distinct pleasure of
speaking with Dr. Eve Gruntfest, the Director of the Social Sciences
Woven into Meteorology. Eve bring thirty years of social science
research to the table as she and her team study how we can improve the
effectiveness of severe weather and hurricane warnings through the
study of human behavior and response. She will be on WeatherBrains on
October 3rd, and she promises to have some fascinating information of
the latest developments in probabilistic warning products. She is
just one of a long line of great guests coming up on the netcast
that's all about weather.

ON THIS DATE IN 1874: The City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
experienced its worst weather disaster when a flash flood claimed 134
lives. Slow moving thunderstorms dumped torrential rains on the hilly
city, with floodwaters running down the slopes and into the city. The
worst flooding occurred in Allegheny City, just northwest of
Pittsburgh. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am
@wxhistorian.
