...Feels Like Fall...

It is a gorgeous Saturday afternoon across Alabama. Skies are mostly
sunny and temperatures are edging up toward 70 degrees. Lows this
morning across Central Alabama included 44F at Tuscaloosa and 45F at
Birmingham and Anniston. Pinson checked in with 42F. Across the
northern part of the state, 43F was a common reading, being measured
at Muscle Shoals, Fort Payne, Decatur and Crossville. Meridianville
bottomed out at 41F for the coolest official reading across the
state. Vic Bell up in Scrougeout reported 40F this morning, while
Will Wallace in Cottondale reported 39F for one of the chilliest
readings.

YOUR FORECAST: Surface high pressure will remain in control of our
weather through at least Tuesday. An upper level trough will continue
to spill cooler and drier air into Alabama from the northwest.
Temperatures will moderate back toward seasonal norms as we go through
time. Expect lower 40s on average tonight, with a few colder spots in
the 30s. Can't rule out a light frost in protected locations
overnight. Sunday looks like a carbon copy of today, with blue skies
and temperatures just a degree or two warmer. Monday and Tuesday will
see highs in the middle 70s, along with lows in the 50s, right around
average for this time of year. By Wednesday, a large storm system is
expected to be taking shape over the nation's midsection. This could
bring showers to western sections by Wednesday and a good chance of
rain Thursday into Friday over much of the state.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Rather benign conditions across the country on
this Saturday afternoon. Rain is occurring across Florida in
association with the front we dealt with yesterday. A coastal low is
developing off the coast of the Carolinas. Rain and snow is across
the Northwest ahead of a storm system. Frost and freeze warnings are
in effect for the mountains of western North Carolina for tonight.
New England also has frost and freeze warnings in place tonight.

IN THE TROPICS: Things are quiet for now in the tropical Atlantic.
The remnants of TD16 are producing heavy rains over Central America.
In the short run, redevelopment is not expected, but don't rule out
something later this week. The system could move back northward,
perhaps into the Gulf and move toward Florida. There are two other
disorganized disturbances, one over the Central Caribbean and another
southwest of the Cape Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic.

ON THIS DATE IN 1991: Wilma became the twelfth hurricane of the 2005
North Atlantic season, tying the all-time record for hurricanes in a
single season, set in 1969. Wilma was the 21st named storm of the
season, which also tied the high water mark for most tropical storms
in a single season, set in 1933 when storms were not named. 2005 was
a record breaking season for hurricanes in nearly every category. Of
course, the record breaking did not end with Wilma. The 27 named
storms in the year shattered the former all time record for the
Atlantic. There were fifteen hurricanes (also a record) and seven of
those went on to become major hurricanes. Five hurricanes reached
category four status and a record four reached category five status.
Of course, Katrina was the costliest hurricane ever and Wilma went on
to become the strongest ever observed in the Atlantic.

...Fine Fall Weekend...

Get ready for a gorgeous weekend as a large upper
trough pumps cooler and drier air into the state. We are starting off
in the 40s in many locations this morning. Very nice.

YOUR FORECAST: A little foggy this morning, but expect
robins egg blue skies today with temperatures topping out around 70
degrees. There could be a few clouds during the midday hours, but
they will hardly be noticed. There will be a fresh northerly breeze
averaging 7-14 mph. Tonight will feature a nice chill, with lowers
averaging in the lower 40s. A few of the normally colder spots will
see lows in the upper 30s. There could even be a little frost in
protected spots…but a light wind could prevent it for most. Monday
and Tuesday will be dry. A developing upper level system will bring
back a chance of rain by Wednesday.

FOOTBAL FORECAST: It will be hard to beat the weather
for football today. Alabama will play Ole Miss at Tuscaloosa on CBS
with a 2:30 kick off. It should be near 70 at kick off and near 60 at
the final whistle. Marshall University will play UAB at Legion Field
with a 3:00 p.m. kick off with similar weather.

IN THE TROPICS: Omar is heading northeastward over the
open waters of the Central Atlantic. Slow weakening and a transition
to an extratropical system is expected over the
weekend and into early next week. By Tuesday, it will be approaching
the Azores. The remnants of TD16 are over Central America. No future
problems anticipated. There is a disturbance approaching the southern
Windwards, but it is at a very low latitude and development seems
remote. Watch for the potential of a tropical cyclone over the
western Caribbean or near the Yucatan this week. There is some
possibility that a late season tropical storm could end up in the Gulf
by late next weekend. It could help bring some much needed moisture
our way.

ONE YEAR AGO: Record highs of 90F were recorded at
Tuscaloosa and Pinson. It is the latest that a 90 degree reading has
ever been observed at Pinson. Pinson recorded 95 days of 90F or
hotter during the long hot summer of 2007, an all time record.

ON THIS DATE IN 1910: The fifth tropical cyclone of the
1910 hurricane season was a strong one. It formed in the bowels of
the southwestern Caribbean, as many October storms do. It
moved northward, becoming a major hurricane as it crossed western Cuba
on the 13th of October. It then slowed and described a big loop north
of Cuba, growing into a category four monster over the southern Gulf
of Mexico. On the 16th, it turned northeast and headed toward a
landfall near Ft. Myers, Florida. Fortunately, it weakened to a
category two hurricane with top winds of 110 mph at landfall. Strong
northeast winds circulating around the hurricane pushed the water out
of Tampa Bay, leaving the lowest water levels ever observed in the
bay, nine feet below normal. A total of forty ships were grounded.
Tampa is regarded to be one of the most vulnerable coastal cities to a
hurricane, with very narrow escape routes and a potential for a very
high storm surge. The 1906 hurricane was south of Tampa. A direct
hit could be a big problem.

...Cold Air Slowly Moving In...

THE ALABAMA STORY is one of a slow-moving cold front struggling to
push through the state this afternoon. It has brought some fairly
significant rain, which exceeded 2/3 of an inch in some parts of the
state, while northern sections got very little. In every place that
rain came, it was a slow steady rain—the kind that soaks in.

At midafternoon, the front was trying to push through the Troy area in
SE Alabama. This has caused quite a contrast in temperature across the
state. It was 83 at midafternoon in Evergreen, while Montgomery had
only 67 and Birmingham 60.

The big question is how quick the clouds will move out and when will
the rain be completely over in time for football games tonight? The
band of rain along the front was still moving very slowly this
afternoon, but most of the rain had ended from Tuscaloosa, Jefferson
and Shelby Counties northward. This means that some high school games
over the south third of the state may have some rain issues this
evening.

THE WEEKEND looks like a Chamber of Commerce deal with near perfect
weather for autumn, unless you still want more rain. Most areas could
use the rain, although most parts of the state are in much better
shape than a year ago. As a point of comparison, Birmingham Airport
has received 45.50 inches this year so far, which is almost double the
23.72 inches on this same day last year.
The weekend will feature full sunshine with chilly mornings and very
comfortable afternoons. We think that Sunday morning will bring the
lowest temperature with an average of 46 across Central Alabama. We
would not be surprised to hear of a 38 or 39 at some place in North
Alabama where it traditionally cools off more at night because of
valley locations.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games this evening across the north
and central part of the state, the temperature around 7:00 p.m. should
be in the low 60s and falling into the 50s by the fourth quarter. Down
state, especially over the SE third, there will be at least some light
rain in the early evening. For college games Saturday, it will be hard
to beat the weather. Alabama will play Ole Miss at Tuscaloosa on CBS
with a 2:30 kick off. It should be near 70 at kick off and near 60 at
the final whistle. Marshall University will play UAB at Legion Field
with a 3:00 p.m. kick off with similar weather. Murray State will play
at Jacksonville State with a 4:00 p.m. kick off. About 68 at kick off
and about 56 at the final whistle.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Gradually getting colder and colder in the Far North
country. It was a bitter 18 below zero this morning at Arctic Village,
Alaska. In the lower four dozen states, it was 21 at Gunnison,
Colorado. That town is over on the west slope of the Colorado Rockies
nestled along the Colorado River.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Monday I plan to post a story on the
33/40 Blog about adopting rescue dogs and how great the need is. I
will post a link to several web sites. The story is too important and
too lengthy to be covered here. I really feel for homeless dogs. I had
a first cousin in Hale County who had a natural like for dogs. One day
a hound dog showed up at his place with one ear torn off like he had
been in a big brawl. They adopted him and he became one of the most
loved pets you could imagine. They even shed tears when he passed
away. One of these days I will have to shed a gallon of tears when we
lose Little Miss Molly, but I am looking for 8 or 10 more years of
absolute enjoyment dealing with that little conniving animal. Life
goes on.

...A Delightful Fall Weekend...

A CHILLY CHANGE: Our October warm spell is coming to an end today
thanks to a cold front passing through the state. A few periods of
light rain are likely this morning, but most of the rain should be out
of the state by early afternoon as drier air takes over. We continue
to promise a fabulous fall weekend, with sunny pleasant days and clear
cool nights. We will drop into the upper 40s tomorrow morning, and mid
40s are likely at daybreak Sunday. Some of the colder valleys across
North Alabama could even reach the upper 30s early Sunday with a few
isolated cases of light frost.

The dry weather will linger into the first half of next week; at this
point it looks like the next chance of rain will come late Wednesday
night into Thursday, followed by another shot of colder air.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games, ideal weather with
clear conditions and temperatures dropping into the 50s during the
game. While we are on the subject, let's discuss the weather for
tomorrow's games. Alabama will host Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa at 2:30
p.m. on CBS TV. Picture perfect weather with near 70 at kick off and
in the low 60s by the final whistle. Almost identical weather for
Marshall University in town to play UAB at Legion Field with a 3:00
p.m. kick off. And, at Paul Snow Stadium Jacksonville State will host
Murray State tomorrow at 4:00 p.m… the sky will be clear with
temperatures falling from the upper 60s into the 50s by the fourth
quarter. Simply marvelous weather for college football.

TROPICS: Hurricane Omar (now a category one hurricane) is moving
northeast over the open water of the Atlantic; it is no threat to
land. Another tropical disturbance in the Central Atlantic, about 850
miles east of the Windward Islands has some potential to become better
organized in the next few days as it moves steadily to the west. The
remnants of Tropical Depression 16 are still producing heavy rain over
parts of Central America.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up on Saturday November 15 at the BJCC during
the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be trained by
the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has
trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the years), and learn
from one of the most brilliant weather researchers in the country, our
own Dr. Tim Coleman. We encourage all of our Skywatchers to attend
this every year; you simply cannot get enough training. We will begin
at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert
Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show.
There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just show up,
but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house last year.

...A Change In Weather...

TRUE EXAMPLE OF AN AUTUMN WEEKEND: We sure have been lucky with
football games not being bothered by rain this season. Almost every
game has been played under ideal conditions.

Not quite so lucky with high school games tonight when there will be a
chance of a shower at most stadiums, but temperatures will be
comfortable and even a bit on the chilly side as the evening goes on.
For Friday night games, ideal weather with clear conditions and
temperatures dropping into the 50s during the game. While we are on
the subject, let's discuss the weather for Saturday's games. Alabama
will host Ole Miss in Tuscaloosa at 2:30 p.m. on CBS TV. Picture
perfect weather with near 70 at kick off and in the low 60s by the
final whistle. Almost identical weather for Marshall University in
town to play UAB at Legion Field with a 3:00 p.m. kick off.

HOW MUCH RAIN? A cold front was pushing toward the NW corner of
Alabama this afternoon and light rain had spread into the extreme
north and NW. As the front continues to edge its way southward,
occasional showers can be expected across Central Alabama tonight and
through most of Friday morning. While temperatures exceeded 80 through
the central and south counties this afternoon, do not be surprised to
experience some highs in the 66 to 70-degree range Friday. It will be
clearing late in the day and then almost entirely clear from Saturday
through next Tuesday. The nights will be chilly. We look for near 50
Saturday morning and in the mid to upper 40s Sunday morning. Highs on
all those days will be in the low to mid 70s and the humidity will be
quite low. The weather for Sunday looks like what you would find if
you looked up the word "autumn" in the dictionary. Not out of the
question to hear of a low temperature around 38 or 39 Sunday morning
at some place in NE Alabama, the traditional cold spots.

TROPICAL WEATHER: This afternoon Hurricane Omar was about 180 miles
NE of the Northern Leeward Islands and headed out into the open
Atlantic. He is losing strength over the cooler waters. A large area
of nervous weather, a tropical wave, was about 950 miles ESE of the
Southern Windward Islands. There may be slow development of that
system in the next couple of days as it moves westward at 10-15 mph.

GLOBAL ROAMING: It was 11 below zero this morning in good old
Deadhorse, Alaska. That town is about as far north as you can get in
Alaska unless you go on up to Barrow where they have a championship
high school football team…now 11 inches of snow on the ground at
Barrow and 10 inches at Bettles…down here where all 48 states touch
each other, the coldest this morning was at Leadville high up in the
Colorado Rockies where I slid off of an icy street one night into a
ravine as a blizzard was approaching.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly's IQ is getting better
and better each day and she takes advantage of that. This morning I
took her on an early, early walk. When we get back each time, she
bubbles over with excitement awaiting a treat as payoff for her going
to the bathroom. After giving her the treat, I took the garbage out
and when I came back in, she was politicking for another treat because
she considered that I had gone on a trip and come back. After that
treat, she gathered some balls for a big game. There is no rest for
the weary, but I love her. Life goes on.

...A Few Showers Tonight; Cooler Tomorrow...

COLD FRONT ON THE WAY: The leading edge of colder air that has been
over the western half of the nation in recent days will move into
Northwest Alabama tonight, meaning we have some weather changes ahead.
Ahead of the front, a few showers should enter the northwest of part
of Alabama this afternoon, spreading over the northern half of the
state tonight. Moisture will be limited, and dynamics not overly
impressive, so at this time we figure rain totals will be on the light
side with most communities getting one-quarter of an inch or less. A
thunderstorm is not completely out of the question, but instability
values will be very limited.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The showers will end by midday tomorrow, and
as the showers move out of the state, much cooler air will blow in.
Some North Alabama communities will fail to reach 70 degrees tomorrow
with a cool northwest breeze. The sky will clear tomorrow night, and
the weekend will feature some fabulous fall weather with sunny days
and clear chilly nights. The high Saturday will be close to 70, with
low to mid 70s Sunday afternoon. Early morning lows over the weekend
will be generally in the 40s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games, the sky will be
mostly cloudy with a chance of showers; temperatures will be falling
through the 70s, possibly reaching the 60s by the fourth quarter. For
tomorrow night's games, a jacket is in order; the sky will be clear
with temperatures falling from the 60s into the 50s. Saturday, Alabama
will host Ole Miss at Bryant-Denny Stadium at 2:30 (CBS-TV); the
weather will be picture perfect with a sunny sky and a temperature
close to 70 at kickoff. Pretty much the same story for the Marshall/
UAB game at Legion Field in Birmingham (3:00 p.m. kickoff); lots of
sunshine with temperatures falling through the 60s.

OLE OMAR: Hurricane Omar moved across the Virgin Islands last night,
packing sustained winds of 105 mph. This storm will continue moving to
the northeast, into the open Atlantic, in coming days and is no threat
to the U.S. mainland.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Depression 16 is moving into
Central America from the western Caribbean; the main threat will be
from flooding and mudslides. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

FALL SEVERE WEATHER AWARENESS: Yesterday was fall severe weather
awareness day in Alabama; our annual fall tornado season is in
November and early December; now is a good time to check your NOAA
Weather Radio, and review your family severe weather plan while the
weather is calm.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was
Anaheim, CA with 99 degrees. Coldest was Bettles, Alaska with 5 below
zero. The high yesterday in Bettles was 10 above zero, and the snow
depth is 9 inches. In Fairbanks, there is a three inch snow cover, and
yesterday's high was only 24.

...Rain In Our Future...

Greetings from Louisville and the National Weather Association
Convention. I am like a kid in a candy store with all of the
educational sessions: Greg Forbes from The Weather Channel talking
about the 1974 Superoutbreak; Eleanor Valier-Talbot from the NWS
Taunton speaking on the 1953 Flint and Worcester tornadoes; the
Director of the National Weather Service, Jack Hayes, on what to
expect from the world's best weather service going forward. We were
reminded of the danger of tornadoes from mesovortices in strong squall
lines by the staff of the NWS St. Louis. During the Super Tuesday
Outbreak on February 5th this year, they had twelve in one hour,
including an EF2 tornado. Convention Program Chair John Gordon, who
was at the NWS Huntsville a few years back, has put on a great show.
Birmingham hopes to host this conference in 2011.

RAIN CHANCES: A gorgeous, warm fall day is in progress across
Alabama this afternoon. Alabamians are enjoying lots of sunshine,
puffy cumulus clouds and warm temperatures reaching into the lower
80s. However, changes are already happening Low pressure is moving
across Missouri. A cold front trails from the low back over Texas.
High clouds will begin to increase from the northwest tonight.
Showers and storms will enter Northwest sections of the state Thursday
afternoon, and reach Central Alabama during the evening hours. There
could be a coupe of storms also. Showers will continue into Friday
morning. As the rain ends, cooler and drier air will be ushered into
the state. Highs on Friday may struggle to reach 70 degrees.

WEEKEND LOOKS GREAT: It will feel like football weather for Friday
night's high school games and for Saturday's games as well. Saturday
will be wonderful, with highs in the lower 70s and a beautiful blue
sky. Ditto for Sunday. Early morning temperatures will be in the
40s.

TROPICS: The tropics have taken center stage again. We had expected
that, because of an upswing in the Madden-Julian Oscillation, which in
a 40-50 day cycle of oscillating wind patterns. An uptick in the MJO
correlates well with tropical cyclone development. We have moved into
one of those phases. Nana flared briefly late in the weekend, but was
torn apart by shear while over the open Atlantic. Omar is becoming a
significant hurricane over the eastern Caribbean. It will affect the
northern Leewards early tonight and cross the Virgin Islands, likely
as a category two hurricane around midnight. But, it is over warm
waters and in a low shear environment and some rapid intensification
could occur today. Tropical depression sixteen formed yesterday over
the southwestern Caribbean. It will affect Honduras and Nicaragua and
could become Paloma.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY EV! Evangelista Torricelli, the Italian physicist and
mathematician who invented the barometer was born on this date in
1608.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: Balmy weather made it feel like summer in
Chicago as the Cubs and Marlins squared off for games one and two of
the National League Championship series. The warmth and a gentle wind
blowing out at Wrigley contributed to an offensive barrage that saw
thirty two runs scored in the two games. Florida won the first game
9-8 in an eleven inning contest that saw an NLCS

...A Week-End Cool Down Ahead...

ANOTHER WARM AFTERNOON: The average high for October 15 is 75 degrees;
we will be almost ten degrees above that figure this afternoon as an
upper air high provides summer-like warmth for Alabama. The upper high
also means sinking air motion, which in turn means few clouds and no
chance of rain.

While we bask in the October warmth, some very chill air covers the
western half of the nation, and it is moving in our direction. The
cold front that marks the leading edge of the cool air will bring a
chance of showers to Alabama tomorrow night and Friday morning; at
this point it looks like the best chance of showers will come from
about 6:00 p.m. Thursday through 12:00 Noon Friday. Due to limited
moisture, rain amounts should be generally light, mostly 1/4 inch or
less.

A COOL CHANGE: Friday will be a different kind of day; as the showers
move out much cooler air moves into the state. Looks like temperatures
won't make it out of the 60s Friday with a chilly north wind. The
weekend looks simply marvelous with excellent fall weather; a bright
sunny sky Saturday and Sunday with comfortable days and chilly nights.
We should be in the 40s both Saturday and Sunday morning, and some of
the colder valleys across North Alabama could even reach the upper 30s
at daybreak Sunday. The high Saturday will be close to 70, with mid
70s Sunday as a warming trend begins.

TROPICS: Tropical Omar developed yesterday in the eastern Caribbean;
it will move to the northeast, across the Virgin Islands tonight, and
then into the open Atlantic. Some strengthening is expected, and Omar
should be a hurricane northeast of the Virgin Islands as it moves over
the Atlantic. Omar is no threat to the U.S. mainland.
Tropical Depression 16 also formed yesterday in the western Caribbean;
this one will move slowly to the west, and will move into Central
America by tonight. Some chance this becomes Tropical Storm Paloma,
but it won't have time to become a hurricane since the system is so
close to land. The hurricane season runs until the end of November.

ON THIS DATE IN 1954: Hurricane Hazel made landfall near Cape Fear NC
on the South Carolina/Georgia border as a category 4 storm with top
winds of 150 mph. A record storm surge caused extreme destruction
along the North Carolina Coast with an 18 foot tide at Calabash. The
tide height was enhanced by highest lunar tide of the year. 300 homes
vanished without a trace at Long Island NC. After the storm, no
fishing pier was left standing from Myrtle Beach, SC to Cedar Island,
NC.

ROAMING: Storms in Texas dropped 2.07" at Wichita Falls and 1.96" at
Abilene. Hot spots in the nation yesterday were Alice and Laredo,
Texas with 96 degrees. Coldest was 10 below zero at Kaltag, Alaska.

...Showers Possible Late Thursday...

ANOTHER DAY OF FULL SUNSHINE TOMORROW: Some changes are ahead in
Alabama weather, but they are not major. It is all due to a cold front
(perhaps we should say cool front) moving SE out of the nation's bread
basked and pushing into Alabama Thursday night and Friday. By
Saturday, the front will push off shore into the Northern Gulf leaving
some ideal autumn weather for Saturday and Sunday. The front will set
off some showers and thunderstorms. Here in Central Alabama, those
should occur late Thursday and Thursday night and on Friday. Clearing
is expected Friday night with cooler temperatures.

HOW MUCH RAIN? Not enough to get excited about. In fact, some of the
computerized guidance hints at very little. However, when a front is
involved this time of year, there can be minor surprises and we could
get a little more. This is especially true Friday when we could get
1/3 inch or more. Our coolest temperatures will be early mornings over
the weekend. Look for some upper 40s by Sunday morning. Highs both
Friday and Saturday should back off to the 70s. It will also be quite
a bit less humid for the weekend. It appears that we will have another
situation with custom-made weather for high school and college games
in the area this weekend. We will have more specific football
forecasts starting in Thursday's editions.

TROPICAL WEATHER: We have a new name on the stage today. It is
Tropical Storm Omar. There is also a new tropical depression #16
centered about 40 miles north of the Nicaragua/Honduras border. It
will move westward just off the South American coast. As far as Omar
is concerned, he should move toward the north and NE way up into the
Central Atlantic by Saturday and Sunday. But first, he will have to
cross just east of Puerto Rico and through the Virgin Islands. He is
projected to become a hurricane possibly by early tomorrow. TD #16
will move into Belize by later tomorrow. Often a tropical depression
on this path can produce some big time flooding in the mountainous
parts of Honduras. #16 is expected to become a tropical storm by
tomorrow morning.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Don't you think it is ironic that Greenland,
overloaded with ice, is extremely cold when the name of the country
would suggest otherwise. Why isn't Iceland the coldest? Instead, the
climate there is much milder than Greenland. It is also interesting
that a large percentage of the homes on Iceland are heated from warm-
water springs…cold temperatures this morning included 13 at Lander,
Wyoming and Grand Canyon, Arizona…Lander still has a heavy snow cover
following the 30-inch weekend storm.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have received several e-mails lately
strongly suggesting if someone wants to get a dog to go for a rescue
dog. There is a drive on now to establish an Alabama license plate on
that subject. I will post something on the Blog about that later.
Meanwhile, Barry Sartain, who lives on an old dirt road near
Brookwood, said that most of their pets for the last 30 years have
been drop offs. They got their latest edition about 2 months ago and
named him Teddy. He had been abused and was losing sight in one eye,
but he is smart and loving. They also have a black cat named Midnight.
The cat lies on his back and Teddy will come over and sit on him. When
the cat gets tired of being chased, he turns around and chases the
dog. Another wonderful story about pets. Life goes on.

...Brighter and Warmer...

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: The flow of moist air from the east will subside
across Alabama today, and with high pressure aloft taking over, the
downward motion in the atmosphere will bring a sunny sky statewide.
Afternoon temperatures will be 5 to 8 degrees above average; most
spots will climb into the low 80s. Some West Alabama communities will
reach the mid 80s.
The dry and warm weather continues through Thursday. Then, a front
will bring the risk of a few scattered showers by Thursday night and
Friday. At this point, it doesn't look like a major rain event due to
limited moisture. Rain totals should be a quarter-inch or less, and
the showers should be over by the time the high school football games
begin Friday night.

OUR WEEKEND: At this point it looks like we can promise some fabulous
fall weather for Saturday and Sunday; lots of sunshine both days with
cooler temperatures. Highs will be in the 70 to 75 degree range, with
early morning lows well down in the 50s. We might reach the upper 40s
at daybreak Sunday. There is no chance of rain.

LONG RANGE THOUGHTS: At this point it looks like a rain event will be
possible around the middle of next week, and many of the longer range
computer models suggest a long wave upper
trough forming over the eastern U.S. before the month is over. If this
happens, some pretty chilly air could flood Alabama that would bring
frost to the Halloween pumpkins.

TROPICS HEATING UP: Lets not forget that the hurricane season runs
through the end of November. Tropical depression Nana is dissipating
this morning in the Central Atlantic, and is no threat to land. In the
eastern Caribbean, tropical depression 15 is expected to become
Tropical Storm Omar today; it will move northeast, in the general
direction of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. This one should
become a hurricane over the open Atlantic northeast of Puerto Rico,
and is no threat to the U.S. mainland.
And, yet another disturbance over the western Caribbean could become a
tropical depression today; this one is just east of Central America,
and should initially move northward. Too early to determine if this
will be a threat to the Gulf of Mexico; there is a chance it will turn
left into Central America or Mexico.

BIG TIME OCTOBER SNOW: This past weekend's snowstorm will rank as the
greatest to ever hit Lander, Wyoming during the month of October and
the 7th largest snowstorm of all time. Remember, Winter does not
arrive until December. Lander received 30 inches from this storm. The
greatest amount we could find was 49 inches near Limestone, Montana in
Sweetgrass County.

EXTREMES: Hot spots in the nation yesterday were Alice and Laredo,
Texas with 93 degrees. Coldest place was McGrath, Alaska with 5
degrees below zero.

...Warm for October...

MAYBE SOME SHOWERS LATE IN WEEK: It does not look like a significant
rain event for the remainder of this week. We do have some hope of
some scattered showers developing by late Thursday, Thursday night and
into Friday. They should be rather widely spaced, so everyone will not
get rain. The computerized models that estimate rain amounts several
days in advance show only puny amounts all the way through Saturday.

Meanwhile, the old thermometer will be rather consistent for the rest
of this week starting tomorrow. We look for mid 80s for a high
temperature through Thursday with some extra cloud cover. The high may
back off a few degrees by Friday, partially due to a few showers.
These high temperatures for the next few days are close to 10 degrees
warmer than average for mid October.

It was comfortable across the state today because clouds hung tough.
This afternoon, because of that cloud cover and an easterly wind,
temperatures were only in the mid 70s over most of North and East
Alabama, but around 80 or better from Tuscaloosa southward to
Montgomery, Evergreen and Mobile.

A large high-pressure center was over Virginia and North Carolina this
afternoon. Counter-clockwise circulation around that high has been
giving us an east wind for several days in a row. That will change a
little bit later. Clouds should be scarce starting later Tuesday and
almost all sunshine on Wednesday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The tropical season seems to be hanging tough.
Tropical depression #15 formed this morning over the Eastern
Caribbean. It is not expected to bother the Gulf of Mexico and the
projected path takes it over the east edge of Puerto Rico and out into
the open Atlantic. It is projected to reach hurricane strength,
however. Meanwhile, Tropical Depression Nana is way out there and no
problem to anybody. Yet another low-pressure area was not far SW of
Nana. Thunderstorms with it have grown some, but interestingly enough,
the circulation will probably ingested into Nana. That does not happen
too often. Still another larger area was over the SW Caribbean 100
miles ESE of Nicaragua coast. A large area of disturbed area is with
that one. Conditions are favourable for additional development and it
will likely become still another tropical depression. A hurricane
hunter will fly into the area Tuesday if necessary.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A whopper of a snowstorm over parts of the
Mountain West over the weekend, especially in Montana and Wyoming.
Lander, Wyoming received 30 inches of snow at the NWS office and that
is the most ever recorded in that city in the month of October. Some
of the heavier amounts from this big storm included 49 inches at
Limestone and Red Lodge, Montana…coldest in the lower 48 this morning
was 8 above at Flagstaff, Arizona…a snow survey this morning shows
that about 13% of the lower 48 has a snow cover—mostly in the Mountain
West…satellite surveys showed that about 2/3 of Alaska is already snow
covered. The winter will be interesting to watch.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I do not think Little Miss Molly likes
football. She gets neglected if there is a big game on TV. She does
not even watch Animal Planet. She knows when TV is on she will get
less attention. I have said many times that I am glad no one can hear
the conversation between Little Miss Molly and me. If you did, you
would either think that Miss Molly was human or that I was stark
raving crazy. We carry on a lot of forehead-to-forehead conversations.
Her eyeballs are almost touching mine and her eyes get real big as if
she is understanding every word. Sure would like to know what she
thinks of me—or maybe I don't. life goes on—seemingly never a dull
moment. I like it that way.

...One More Mostly Gray Day...

Most areas are waking to another gray start across Central Alabama as
a persistent easterly flow continues across Alabama. It continues to
pump in Atlantic moisture at the low levels. Additionally, the upper
low that has outworn its welcome is rotating back to the west across
southern Alabama underneath the ridge of high pressure that extends
down into the Deep South. It will trigger a few showers over southern
sections of the state today. There is a slight chance that eastern
sections of Central Alabama may see a few of the showers also today,
perhaps as far west as I-65. A large high pressure cell is expected
to drop into Georgia starting later tonight, and this will effectively
cut off the easterly flow. Clouds should begin to break up late this
afternoon, allowing for some sun to return late in the day.
Temperatures this afternoon will top out around 80, with 70s in spots
with more persistent clouds.

THE WEEK AHEAD: By tomorrow, high pressure will be in control of
Alabama's weather. This will allow for plenty of sunshine and warm
conditions Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures will go back
above normal, with highs in the middle 80s then. A weakening cold
front will be approaching Alabama from the northwest late on Thursday.
Clouds will increase late in the day, and a shower will be possible
overnight Thursday night into Friday morning. But the front will
dissipate as it slides into Central sections of the state without
making much of a fuss. By Saturday, high pressure will be building
into Alabama, bringing us fair weather and temperatures that are right
around normal. Highs will be in the 70s, and lows will be in the 50s.

THE TROPICS: The disturbance over the central Caribbean continues to
get better organized and a tropical depression could form later today.
It is expected to move in a general northward direction toward
Hispaniola and Puerto Rico. It could become a tropical storm before
reaching those areas. Tropical Storm Nana formed yesterday afternoon
over the Central Atlantic. It has a nice circulation, but it is in an
area that is extremely hostile from an upper wind standpoint and it
should get ripped apart by the shear. It may not survive the day.

PROJECT STORMFURY: The eleventh tropical storm of 1947 was named
"King" by the U.S. Weather Bureau. It passed over Cuba and
intensified rapidly before reaching the southwest Florida coast on the
October 11th with winds estimated as high as 150 mph. The storm has
the distinction of being the first hurricane ever to be seeded with
silver iodide in an attempt to weaken it. As the hurricane passed 350
miles offshore east of Jacksonville on the 13th, Project Cirrus dumped
the dry ice into the storm. The researchers did not get the result
they were looking for, as the storm stalled and then abruptly turned
toward shore, striking Savannah. Seeding hurricanes would not be
attempted again until the 1960s because of some scientists' beliefs
that the seeding had altered the course of the storm. The storm had
already begun the turn prior to the seeding as it steered around a
strengthening high pressure center along the East Coast.

...Clouds Hang Tough...

A persistent easterly flow is strengthening this morning as high
pressure over the Northeast U.S. flexes its muscle into the
Southeast. That combined with that upper low over southern Georgia is
producing the flow which is bringing in ots of Atlantic moisture. The
low will open up into a wave of low pressure and rotate around the
apex of the ridge. This will produce the possibility of a few showers
later today and on Monday, but rainfall will be light and spotty.
Highs today will be mainly in the upper 70s, but a few spots will be
cooler because of the cloudiness.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday will likely look a lot like today with
considerable cloudiness and a few light showers along with a continued
easterly breeze. Highs will again be in the 70s to around 80
depending on the amount of sunshine. In fact, sunshine should begin
to increase Monday afternoon. High pressure will be sliding south and
will move into Georgia by Tuesday or Wednesday. This should give us
some rather fine weather during the midweek period. By Thursday, a
cold front will be approaching from the northwest and that means
showers or storms by late Thursday into Friday. Fine weather should
be back for the weekend.

NATIONAL NOTES: The season's first big winter storm brought snow to
the northern Rockies, severe storms to New Mexico and record cold to
the West. Numerous reports of at least one foot of snow have
continued to roll in from Montana. A tornado touched down late last
night along I-70 near Goodland, Kansas. Another was reported in New
Mexico near Stanley. Severe weather is possible today from New Mexico
to western Kansas. The 32F reading at Astoria, Oregon this morning
is one of several record lows for the date that were observed across
the West. Ditto for Winslow, AZ at 21F. The high on Saturday at
McCarran International in Las Vegas was just 60F, smashing the record
cool high for the date. The previous day's high was 90F. It was the
greatest two day temperature drop at Vegas in thirty years. Frost
advisories were in effect for the valleys around San Francisco. As
high pressure settles into the Great Basin, Santa Ana winds will begin
to blow over Southern California. This combined with humidities in
the single digits will produce wildfire conditions.

TROPICS: The tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean is in a
hostile environment currently, but the models continue to be bullish
on the idea of a tropical storm forming. It likely would take a
course to the north and northeast over Puerto Rico and the Virgin
Islands and out into the Atlantic. There is still a disturbance 1,600
miles east of the islands. It has an area of low pressure associated
with it and a tropical depression could form, but wind shear will tear
apart any system that forms as it moves northward out into the Atlantic.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: Buffalo's earliest lake effect snowstorm on
record dumped 8.3 inches of snow on the city, setting a new record for
the most snow on any October day. The record didn't last long, as
10.9 inches fell on the 13th, breaking the new record. A total of
22.6 inches fell during the storm, the largest October snowstorm in
the city's history. With trees still in full leaf, the heavy, wet
snow brought down tree limbs and power lines. Ninety percent of the
city's trees suffered damage. The storm was nicknamed "Arborgeddon"
by local residents.

...Lots of Clouds...

An easterly flow continues to spread Atlantic moisture into Alabama on
this October Sunday. This means a good bit of clouds today again
across the area. Most areas should top out around 80 degrees.
Cloudier spots could stay in the 70s. You will notice the easterly
breezes today, averaging some 7-14 mph, as high pressure way to the
northeast pushes southwestward. There could be a little drizzle this
morning and an isolated shower this afternoon.

THE WEEK AHEAD: The easterly flow will keep Alabama in its hold
through tomorrow. That means that Monday will be a carbon copy of
today with considerable cloudiness, a little drizzle and a few
showers. Clouds should begin to break up a bit by late tomorrow,
however. By Tuesday, high pressure will still be sliding southward
and it will take up residence over Georgia. This should lead to some
fine weather through midweek. A cold front will approach from the
northwest by Thursday, and this will cause a few isolated showers and
storms, most likely on Friday. But high pressure will build back in
for the weekend and much of the following week. In you believe in
voodoo (the long range part of the GFS) you might believe we would be
dry until the final week of the month, when a nice shot of cool air
would be preceded by a round of rain and storms.

NATIONAL HIGHLIGHTS: Snow continues to pile up over Montana and
Wyoming. Final snow totals were expected to reach 305 feet over parts
of Montana. Tornado watches were in effect overnight in New Mexico,
where instability from the powerful upper low. High pressure
settling into the West will produce those dreaded Santa Ana winds
through the mountain passes of Southern California. It is fire season
there and the danger will be high Monday and Tuesday. Flooding will
occur in the Rio Grande Valley of Southwest Texas as the moisture from
Pacific Hurricane Norbert spreads northeast. .

IN THE TROPICS: Disturbance 97L is very close to being a tropical
depression. It is some 1,200 miles east of the Lesser Antilles this
morning. It is over warm water (29C) and is under only moderate wind
shear, so look for an upgrade to tropical depression soon. It should
curve to the northwest and north over the next couple of days, staying
way out over the open waters of the Atlantic.

NORBERT: Pacific Hurricane Norbert may have been one of the strongest
hurricanes ever to hit western Mexico. It made landfall on Baja
California Saturday afternoon, crossed the Gulf of California and
moved into western Mexico last evening. Air Force recon into the
storm measured a central pressure of 958 millibars before landfall.
The storm had top winds of 105 mph at landfall, making it a category
two storm. It took advantage of water that was up to three degrees
above normal as it approached land, allowing it to remain strong.
There has never been a category three hurricane on the west coast of
Mexico, so Norbert qualifies as one of the strongest. The Sierra
Nevada mountains will quickly knock the stuffing out of Norbert by
tomorrow, but lots of moisture will be pulled northward into the
Southern Plains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1979: Typhoon Tip in the Northwest Pacific Ocean
achieved the dubious distinction of being the strongest tropical
cyclone ever measured on earth. It was measured to have a central
pressure of 870 millibars and estimated surface sustained winds of 190
mph as it swept through the Luzon Strait.
