Greetings from Louisville and the National Weather Association
Convention. I am like a kid in a candy store with all of the
educational sessions: Greg Forbes from The Weather Channel talking
about the 1974 Superoutbreak; Eleanor Valier-Talbot from the NWS
Taunton speaking on the 1953 Flint and Worcester tornadoes; the
Director of the National Weather Service, Jack Hayes, on what to
expect from the world's best weather service going forward. We were
reminded of the danger of tornadoes from mesovortices in strong squall
lines by the staff of the NWS St. Louis. During the Super Tuesday
Outbreak on February 5th this year, they had twelve in one hour,
including an EF2 tornado. Convention Program Chair John Gordon, who
was at the NWS Huntsville a few years back, has put on a great show.
Birmingham hopes to host this conference in 2011.

RAIN CHANCES: A gorgeous, warm fall day is in progress across
Alabama this afternoon. Alabamians are enjoying lots of sunshine,
puffy cumulus clouds and warm temperatures reaching into the lower
80s. However, changes are already happening Low pressure is moving
across Missouri. A cold front trails from the low back over Texas.
High clouds will begin to increase from the northwest tonight.
Showers and storms will enter Northwest sections of the state Thursday
afternoon, and reach Central Alabama during the evening hours. There
could be a coupe of storms also. Showers will continue into Friday
morning. As the rain ends, cooler and drier air will be ushered into
the state. Highs on Friday may struggle to reach 70 degrees.

WEEKEND LOOKS GREAT: It will feel like football weather for Friday
night's high school games and for Saturday's games as well. Saturday
will be wonderful, with highs in the lower 70s and a beautiful blue
sky. Ditto for Sunday. Early morning temperatures will be in the
40s.

TROPICS: The tropics have taken center stage again. We had expected
that, because of an upswing in the Madden-Julian Oscillation, which in
a 40-50 day cycle of oscillating wind patterns. An uptick in the MJO
correlates well with tropical cyclone development. We have moved into
one of those phases. Nana flared briefly late in the weekend, but was
torn apart by shear while over the open Atlantic. Omar is becoming a
significant hurricane over the eastern Caribbean. It will affect the
northern Leewards early tonight and cross the Virgin Islands, likely
as a category two hurricane around midnight. But, it is over warm
waters and in a low shear environment and some rapid intensification
could occur today. Tropical depression sixteen formed yesterday over
the southwestern Caribbean. It will affect Honduras and Nicaragua and
could become Paloma.

mathematician who invented the barometer was born on this date in
1608.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: Balmy weather made it feel like summer in
Chicago as the Cubs and Marlins squared off for games one and two of
the National League Championship series. The warmth and a gentle wind
blowing out at Wrigley contributed to an offensive barrage that saw
thirty two runs scored in the two games. Florida won the first game
9-8 in an eleven inning contest that saw an NLCS
