...Easterly Flow...

GOOD MORNING! Great weather is in store today when the green flag drops at
the Talladega Superspeedway. Skies should be at least partially sunny, with
increasing sunshine during the race. Temperatures will start out around 80
degrees, rising into the middle 80s by the checkered flag. The chance of
rain is nearly zero.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Our weather is dominated by an easterly flow
around high pressure that is centered over New York City and ridges
southwestward along the East Coast. An easterly flow over Alabama and the
South This is supplying plenty of Atlantic moisture. The result is the
morning low clouds out there across the area. They should dissipate a
little faster today, I think, and partial sunshine will be around by late
morning, with abundant sunshine by afternoon. Highs will rise well in to
the 80s. It's more of the same through Tuesday. Shower chances will be on
the rise Wednesday as moisture pools over our area ahead of a cold front.
The front will push showers and storms through our area on Thursday. Nice
weather builds in for the weekend.

IN THE TROPICS: TD 20 may be Stan by the time you read this. It will exit
into the southwestern Gulf of Mexico later this afternoon. Continuing on a
westerly course, it will make landfall on the Mexican coast well south of
the U.S. border Tuesday evening. TD 19 weakened considerably last evening
and will have to get its act together if it is going to become a named
storm. We will be watching several developments over the next ten days,
including an East Coast storm, possible Gulf development and the possibility
of another large hurricane approaching the Bahamas and perhaps East Coast in
about ten days. Stay tuned.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Persistent northerly winds from nearly stationary
Hurricane Keith in the Caribbean pushed the water out of Chetumal Bay,
Mexico. Residents took a leisurely stroll across the floor of the bay,
exposed by the receding waters. Urgent advisories from the National
Hurricane Center warned that the waters might return suddenly, drowning the
unaware walkers. Fortunately, the waters returned gradually, and disaster
was averted.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Welcome to October! The tenth month of the year is
generally one of the most beautiful here in Birmingham and Alabama.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Thousands of race fans are here in Central Alabama this
weekend for the annual running of the UAW-Ford 500 at the Talladega
Superspeedway. Expect morning clouds again, gradually breaking up. Rain
chances will be nearly zero. Temperatures will be warm, in the 80s.

WEEK AHEAD: Alabama will continue under the influence of a moist easterly
flow until a cold front arrives on Thursday. This will continue to give us
fairly high dew points, some clouds, especially during the morning hours and
a chance of showers from time to time. But for the most part, we will
remain dry through Tuesday. Showers and storms will become more numerous on
Wednesday, ahead of an approaching cold front. That front will push through
the area on Thursday.

TROPICS: Tropical Depression 19 is located about 1600 miles east of the
islands of the Caribbean this afternoon. It is moving northwest and is
expected to stay on a northerly course for the next five days, staying well
east of the islands. The system is expected to become a tropical storm
later today or tonight, at which time it will be named Stan or Tammy. That
depends on if Tropical Depression 20 beats it to the punch. TD 20 is about
100 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico. It is expected to reach the Yucatan
Peninsula tonight, crossing the land mass and emerging into the southwestern
Gulf of Mexico. It should then re-intensify before reaching the Mexican
coast on Tuesday.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Can't rule out a shower tonight as Auburn entertains
South Carolina and UAS plays host to Rice. Game time temperatures will
start out in the upper 70s, falling very slowly during the game. Winds will
not be a factor, coming out of the east at less than 6 mph.

KATRINA DEATH TOLL: The death toll from terrible Hurricane Katrina
continues to rise as crews clearing debris continue to find bodies. News
reports indicate that a total of 1,133 people perished in the hurricane.
Louisiana is counting 896 fatalities. The Mississippi death toll is at 221
this morning. Fourteen people died in Florida and two died in Alabama. I
never thought that I would be adding a modern hurricane to the list of
deadliest hurricanes in United States history. We have just come too far
for that. But today, Hurricane Katrina ranks some where between third and
fifth in the infamous list of deadly U.S. Hurricanes. The uncertainty
arises because the death tolls in the two 1893 hurricanes is unclear.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Dormant for eighteen years, the Mount St. Helens
volcano in Washington State rumbled to life with a series of earthquakes and
rumblings that culminated in a minor explosion and plume of ash. Experts
warned that a significant eruption was possible and moved the warning level
to a red alert, the highest on the volcanic eruption scale. They did,
however, say that they did not expect any eruption to be on the magnitude of
the devastating 1980 eruption that killed 57 people and caused destruction
over a wide area.

...Easterly Flow...

GOOD MORNING: The major feature on weather maps this morning is a large
ridge of high pressure along the East Coast. With the tail end of this
ridge just to our northeast, Alabama is under the influence of an easterly
surface flow. An easterly wind is an ill wind, it is often said. It this
case, it is sort of true. Those easterly winds will transport moist
Atlantic air into the state today. We will start off with a good bit of
clouds that will burn off by midmorning, giving way to partly cloudy skies.
A few light showers might break out tonight across the area. In fact, you
can expect a mix of sun and clouds through the weekend, with a continued
very slight chance of a shower at just about anytime.

RACE WEATHER: Expect decent weather for today's race and the big race
tomorrow. It will be partly cloudy today with warm temperatures for the 1st
of October. Tomorrow will feature more partly cloudy skies, with about a
ten percent chance of a shower during the race.

WEEK AHEAD: Expect partly sunny skies with a few rounds of showers through
midweek before a cold front approaches on Wednesday. .

TROPICS: Tropical Depression 19 is 1750 miles east of the islands and no
threat to land at this time. It could become Tropical Storm Stan today.
Tropical Depression 20 could forming the Northwest Caribbean today. It will
head toward the border of Texas and Mexico this week.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: The Alabama Crimson Tide will entertain the Florida
Gators this afternoon in Tuscaloosa. Conditions are expected to be partly
sunny and warm, with game time temperatures in the middle 80s. South
Carolina travels to Auburn and UAB takes on Rice in Legion Field at 6p.m.
Skies should be partly cloudy. Just a slight chance of a shower. Kickoff
temperatures will be around 79.

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: A Navy reconnaissance plane went down in a typhoon
in the South China Sea. The plane was the first Hurricane Hunter plane ever
to go down. The seven crewmembers were never found.

IN THE COOL OF THE MORNING: Hope you were out early today. If so,
you felt a marked change in the air and the coolest temperatures since last
spring. Don't have near enough space for all the Alabama lows this morning,
but here is a selection:

45 in Belle Mina
46 in Florence and Valley Head
47 in Hartselle and at Russell Cave Nat. Monument
48 in Huntsville, Hamilton and Desoto State Park
49 at Decatur, Moulton and Athens
50 at Cullman, Ft. Payne, Hackleburg and Madison
52 in Albertville and Section
53 in Jasper, Fayette and Parrish
54 in Mentone, Collinsville and Gadsden
55 in Pinson
56 in Leeds, Reform, Crossville and Northport
57 in Birmingham, Helena, Talladega, Wedowee
58 in Tuscaloosa, Centreville, Rainbow City
59 in Eutaw, Livingston, Alexander City, Cheaha
60 at Anniston Airport and Clanton.

THIS WEEKEND: The recovery will be rather quick. High temperatures
will go back to, and persist in the mid 80s for the next several days. There
will also be a limited moisture return. There is a slight chance of a shower
Saturday but few, if any, after that and through at least next Tuesday. The
humidity will also increase.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Near perfect for tonight's high school games.
Clear with about 72 at kickoff falling into the 60s. College football
weather Saturday will also be good. Alabama meets Florida in Tuscaloosa.
Near 85 degrees at the 2:30 kickoff. Only a small chance of a shower. For
Auburn-South Carolina at Auburn and UAB-Rice at Birmingham, also only a
small risk of a shower. Temperatures around 79 for the 6 pm beginnings.

RACE WEEKEND: It is the big race weekend at Talladega. Afternoon
temperatures will be in the mid 80s both Saturday and Sunday. A slight risk
of a shower Saturday but most areas dry. We don't expect any showers Sunday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The large low pressure area over the NW Caribbean
has become better organized and showers and thunderstorms have increased.
Upper level winds, however, have become less favorable. The NHC still thinks
this will become a tropical depression during the next day or so as it moves
NW. We will watch it as it moves toward the SE Gulf.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: Hope you saw the nice photo on the front page
of Section B of this morning's Birmingham News by Joe Songer. Shows some
Canada geese landing on Cosby Lake in Pinson...just another sign of a change
in seasons...a very cold 14 at Bondurant, Wyo., this morning for the
national low...11 degrees colder than Alaska's coldest of 25 at Barrow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had planned to drag Little Miss
Molly out of bed before sunrise to enjoy a nice cool half-mile walk. She
beat me to it. She dragged me out of bed and we were on our way just as the
sun peeped over the horizon. Sure was nice to see the Old Crow Motel back
lighted without any haze or fog. The heavy dew made the grass glisten with
the rising sun. We stayed out a long time and Molly had a ball. She even
chased some bright yellow butterflies that have suddenly appeared...we
expect to see some Canada geese fly over in "V" formation at any time, Last
year she even tried to reach up and paw one. Dumb dog. Life goes on.

...Sunshine With Low Humidity...

We will wrap up the month of September today with ample sunshine and low
humidity after a refreshingly cool morning. Temperatures will reach the low
80s today, not far from normal for this time of the year.

RACE WEEKEND: Moisture will return over the weekend, but we will mention
only a small risk of any one spot seeing a brief shower tomorrow and Sunday.
So, generally speaking race weekend at Talladega will be warm and dry with
high temperatures in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: At this point the first half of next week looks warm and dry. A
few showers could return by Thursday and Friday of next week as a surface
front approaches and stalls over north or central Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Delightful weather for the high school games tonight. the
sky will be clear with temperatures dropping from the low 70s into the 60s
during the games around the state.

Alabama will host Florida at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Bryant-Denny Stadium in
Tuscaloosa. The game will be played under a partly sunny sky with a small
risk of a shower during the game. The kickoff temperature will be near 84
degrees.

Auburn hosts South Carolina tomorrow evening. At kickoff (6:00 p.m.), the
temperature should be near 79 degrees, and there is only a slight risk of a
shower during the first half.

UAB also has a home game; the Blazers will take on Rice tomorrow evening at
Legion Field at 6:00. Just a small risk of a shower, otherwise a fair sky
with a kickoff temperature of 80 degrees.

TEXAS HEAT: Corpus Christi soared to 98 degrees yesterday, a new record
high. Record highs have been set there now for 8 days in a row.

...A Nice Change To Cooler Weather...

A cold front will pass through Alabama this morning with the risk of
a few isolated morning showers, and a welcomed change to cooler
temperatures. We don't expect the mercury to reach 80 degrees today, and a
fresh north breeze will bring in very dry air making for low humidity levels
by afternoon.
Tomorrow morning most communities in north and central Alabama will drop
into the mid 50s, but some of the colder valleys have a great chance of
reaching the upper 40s for the first time in many months. Tomorrow will be a
beautiful fall day with a sunny sky, low humidity, and afternoon
temperatures peaking in the low 80s.

RACE WEEKEND: The weather for NASCAR fans coming into Talladega
looks pretty good at this point. Dry and warm weather both Saturday and
Sunday with a partly to mostly sunny sky, and afternoon temperatures in the
82 to 85 degree range.

TROPICS: A strong tropical wave in the Caribbean is expected to
become tropical storm Stan during the next 24 hours. Many of the computer
models move this system across Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, and then on to
the Mexican Gulf coast somewhere below Brownsville, TX early next week. Some
of the models suggest another system forming in the Atlantic, off the
southeast coast of the U.S. over the weekend, potentially moving toward the
Carolinas. Neither of these systems should impact Alabama.

A COOL CHANGE: Stanley, Idaho dropped to 22 degrees early yesterday
morning, and was the coldest place in the U.S. Northway, Alaska was close
behind with 25 degrees. A number of communities in Montana and Wyoming had
their first freeze of the season.

DON'T WE DESERVE A BREAK? I sure think so and I have good news. No,
it is not because I have switched to a certain insurance company and saved a
bunch of money. Instead, as we look to the NW we see the coolest air so far
since last spring rolling toward the SE.

After all, the average high for the first 27 days of September was
90 and the average low 67 at both Tuscaloosa and Birmingham. It has been 90
or higher on 15 days including nine such days in the last two weeks. So, the
front will be most welcomed with possible dancing in the streets even though
the cool spell will not last long.

The front will enter NW Alabama tomorrow morning and then move
through the entire state. There will be some showers, and possibly even a
thunderstorm along and in advance of the front. The wind will switch around
to the NW and increase to between 10 and 18 mph. Even that is enough to cool
you off. Crank in a high of 78 and it will be very nice.

Skies will clear Thursday night. How about these low temperatures
that we expect for Friday morning!:

46 in Desoto State Park
47 in Valley Head
48 in Gadsden
49 in Pinson and Anniston
53 at Birmingham Airport
Highs Friday with total sunshine will be near 80 but humidity will
be much lower. Most of the weekend will stay dry although we can't rule out
a slight chance of a shower on Sunday as it becomes more humid.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The ambitious tropical wave, mainly in the
Caribbean has become better organized today. A weak circulation has
developed along the SW part. Thunderstorm activity has increased and the
winds upstairs became more friendly overnight. The flight into the hurricane
was delayed until tomorrow, however. This will probably become a tropical
depression. If it grows more, to a tropical storm, it will be named Stan.

LOOKING AROUND: Another hard freeze this morning in the Sawtooth
Mountains of Idaho as the thermometer bottomed out at 22 at
Stanley...noticed the first sub-zero temperature of the season yesterday
morning at Alert, the northernmost weather station in Canada...another sign
of the season...a note from one of our readers reporting that autumn color
is just beginning at Saranac Lake, in upstate New York...hottest yesterday
was 106 in Gila Bend and Laredo, Texas.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor Little Miss Molly. When I went to
bed at 11 last night, Molly would not follow me as usual. Instead she got up
on the back of the couch and turned her face toward the back of the kitchen
where the garage door opens. I guess she was hoping Judy would come home. Of
course Molly, does not understand that she will be in the Desert Southwest
on Vacation for 8 more days. I finally picked her up and placed her on the
foot of the king-sized bed and she stayed there all night., Life goes on.

...Cooler Air Arrives Tomorrow...

Our eyes are on a cold front advancing toward Alabama today. It is expected
to push through the state tomorrow morning, and has the potential to bring a
few widely scattered showers late tonight or tomorrow morning. Rainfall
amounts should be light and spotty, and the chance of any one spot getting
wet is about one in four. The best chance of a shower will come from about
midnight tonight through noon tomorrow.

We are projecting a high of only 78 degrees tomorrow; if that is correct it
will be the coolest maximum temperature here since July 11. Most communities
will dip into the 50s early Friday, somewhere between 55 and 59 degrees. The
cooler valleys might even reach the low 50s.

WEEKEND PEEK: At this point the weekend looks mostly dry with a partly sunny
sky on Saturday and Sunday, along with highs between 82 and 85 degrees.
There will be some moist air returning, but the chance of getting wet at
this point looks so small we won't mention it in the forecast. Low
temperatures will be in the 60s.

TROPICS: A strong tropical wave in the Caribbean is expected to become
tropical storm Stan at some point during the next 48 hours. The system is
forecast to move across Mexico's Yucatan peninsula, with a potential threat
to the Gulf coast of Mexico or far southern Texas in five days or so,
possibly as a hurricane.

MORE TORNADOES: The tornado count from this past Sunday is up to eleven. NWS
storm survey teams found two tornado tracks in Winston county yesterday; one
F0 and one F1. There were no injuries due to the Winston county twisters.
Earlier, one tornado was confirmed in Sumter county, and a total of 8
tornado tracks were identified in Tuscaloosa county.

TEMPERATURES MORE AGREEABLE: They may not be quite as cool as you
would like this time of year. At least we are rid of those mid 90s that
looked for a time like they would stick with us all year.

This afternoon there was a front of sorts across the central part of
Alabama. Dew points were 70 or better downstate but in the more pleasant 60s
across the North.

We need to wait a little longer until a better defined cool front
reached Central Alabama during the day Thursday. It will bring some widely
scattered showers as winds shift around to the NW. Highs should be in the
upper 70s.

Our coolest period will be Friday morning with lows in the 50s over
much of North Alabama. See our day by day forecast for all the details.
STORY OF A WET PENSACOLA: Will that NW Florida City get 100 inches
this year? Probably not, but is reachable. The 5.61 inches they got
yesterday brought the 2005 total to a very impressive 75.09 inches including
68 inches in less than seven months. They are now 24 inches wetter than
normal. Not far away, in Mobile, the year's total stands at 67.80 inches-a
surplus of 15.45 inches.

The heavy rain that North and West Alabama received Sunday and
Sunday night shifted SE yesterday, In the last 24 hours, 6.50 inches fell in
Wallace, in South Central Alabama and 5.60 in Brewton.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Still watching an ambitious tropical wave in the
Caribbean SE of Jamaica. It has become better organized and winds upstairs
are becoming more friendly. Seems likely that a tropical depression will
come out of this in a day or so. If it becomes a tropical storm, it will be
named Stan. A reconnaissance aircraft will go into it the area tomorrow.

Speaking of hurricanes, a major one struck the Mobile-Pensacola area
on this date in 1906, the strongest one in over 150 years.

ELSEWHERE: It has been unusually hot for so late in parts of Texas
lately. Yesterday the national high was 108 at Waco and Temple. Cold spot
this morning was 26 at Shirley Basin, Wyoming.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Woe is me, I will have Little Miss
Molly all to myself for the next 9 days. My wife flew to Phoenix today. She
will meet her two sisters, one from Coos Bay, Oregon and one from Layton,
Utah for a sister-sister vacation...they will migrate to Las Vegas where
they will stay in a timeshare. They will motor down to Boulder City, Nevada
to visit their aunt...when I got back from the Birmingham Airport today,
Little Miss Molly would not even take her treat until she found out about
Judy. She went all through the house searching for her...I will to spend
extra time with her...Molly has seemed subdued all day...her and Judy are
used to taking a good long nap during the day in the living area...but life
goes on...tis amazing how little animals get into a routine possibly more
strict than humans.

...Sunshine Returns In Full Force...

A sunny sky returns to Alabama today following a round of heavy rain and
tornadic thunderstorms, thanks to former hurricane Rita. Temperatures will
rise into the upper 80s today, and some spots might even touch the 90 degree
mark.

A cold front will be passing through the state later in the week, and will
bring the risk of a few showers late tomorrow night into Thursday. But, with
limited moisture and upper air support, rain should be light and spotty.

Following that front, temperatures will cool nicely, with early morning
temperatures reaching the 50s by early Friday and Saturday morning for most
places.

RACE WEEKEND PREVIEW: For NASCAR fans coming in for the races this weekend
at Talladega, Saturday should be a dry day with temperatures reaching the
low 80s. We will mention a small risk of a shower on Sunday with a high in
the low to mid 80s. The chance of rain Sunday at the track at this point
looks to be only in the 10 to 20 percent range.

TROPICS: A tropical wave moving through the central Caribbean has a chance
to get better organized during the next day or so. This one seems to be
heading into the Gulf of Mexico; long range model data suggests the western
Gulf coast (Texas or Mexico) would have the greatest chance of being
threatened at this time.

STORM SURVEYS: A National Weather Service survey team found eight separate
tornado tracks in western Tuscaloosa county, two were rated F1, and the
others were rated F0. All of these tornadoes touched down Sunday afternoon.
Two F0 tornado tracks were identified in Winston county, and yet another in
Sumter county. Survey work continues in other areas today.

BOUNCING BACK FROM RITA: She is long gone but her pain lingers. Some
of the communities along the SW Louisiana and SE Texas Coasts were severely
damaged. Cameron, Louisiana was virtually wiped off the map.

Here in Alabama, we got our taste of Rita Sunday and she did not
taste good. A rash of tornado warnings during the afternoon and well into
the evening. There was scattered damage mainly in West Alabama. Most notable
was an area just NW of the Tuscaloosa area where two tornadoes moved across
U. S. 82 and continued NE into North Tuscaloosa County. There were at least
two injuries at a mobile home park in the area. The tornado was televised
live on ABC 33/40 from their tower cam in Tuscaloosa.

Teams from the National Weather Service surveyed the area today and
there will be a full assessment of the damage and paths soon.

DRY TO WET IN A FLASH: We had all been complaining about the lack of
rain this September as lawns had to be watered late in the season and even
the countryside seemed like it was turning brown. Rita brought us a
widespread soaking especially over the north and west. Here are some sample
amounts:

4.00 inches in Decatur
5.00 at Arkadelphia (SW Cullman County)
4.06 Greystone Cove (James Spann)
3.47 at Helena (Nathan Jones)
4.47 at Helena (Brian Peters
1.51 at Birmingham Airport
4.03 in Alabaster
4.24 in Demopolis
6.37 in Hamilton
8.50 in Newbern (SE Hale County)
4.43 in Jasper

NICE CHANGES AHEAD: Sunshine returns Tuesday. It will be cooler at
night but quite warm in the afternoon. However, a fresh supply of cooler air
will arrive Thursday along with a few showers. (See our day by day forecast
for details.)

GULF OF MEXICO AFTER RITA: Water temperatures have recovered
somewhat to between 83 and 85 degrees. By the way, the NHC is watching a
tropical wave over the Central Caribbean as it moves WNW at 15 to 20 mph.
Could it be the future Stan? Something to watch because it will be
positioned in such a way to enter the SE Gulf of Mexico.

ELSEWHERE: 110 in Laredo and 21 at Big Piney and Shirley Basin,
Wyoming represent the USA temperature extremes for the last 24 hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly knew she was
neglected over the weekend but she vowed not to let it happen today. She was
the most insistent ever this morning and almost tackled me as soon as she
got up. We had a rapid-fire ballgame even before she yawned and stretched.
Then off to our first walk of the day. It seemed so fresh. Our 2.07 rainfall
Sunday made the whole community look better. The Old Crow Creek that had
taken on the look of a Arizona dry wash was actually flowing. Even more
birds were talking and at least five of our crow friends were making
themselves heard. A real pleasant start to our day. Life goes on.

...A Wild Sunday...

GOOD MORNING: The National Weather Service in Jackson reported Sunday
evening that it had issued a total of 369 Tornado Warnings since Friday
night. I counted at least 34 tornadoes issued by the NWS Birmingham today
since noon. That's a lot of Tornado Warnings. All because of the remnants
of Hurricane Rita.

The low moved into northeastern Arkansas on Sunday and is still headed
northeast. A strong feeder bands associated with the storm rotated into
western Alabama during the afternoon hours and across the state overnight.
Thunderstorms in these bands on the periphery of dying tropical cyclones
often are energized by daytime heating and rotate like mad in the high wind
shear environment. That was the case on Sunday.

REAL LIVE SEPTEMBER TORNADOES: It is a rare event to have a September
tornado in Alabama. They are often associated with dying tropical systems.
There was an actual one on the ground for nearly 15 minutes across western
and northern Tuscaloosa Counties Sunday afternoon. It was captured live and
in color on ABC3340 towercam. James will have the video posted this
afternoon on the Blog. Injuries were reported at the Hilltop Trailer Pak in
Buhl. A house was destroyed near Elrod. A tornado was sighted on the ground
north of Cullman. There were several other reports of funnel clouds and
wind damage.

OUR WEATHER: The active feeder band will continue moving out of East
Alabama this morning. A cold front will move through the state in the wake
of the morning activity, shifting our winds around to the northwest. Less
humid air will gradually filter into the area starting tonight. Lows will
drop into the seasonable middle 60s tonight Nice weather will prevail
Tuesday and Wednesday. A significant cold front will move across the area
on Thursday. It will be accompanied by a few showers and followed by the
coolest air of the season.

DRIEST SEPTEMBER? So much for that idea. We have been saved by the
mini-drought busting rains of Rita. Radar estimates indicated 2-4 inches
of rain fell across parts of the area overnight.
