...High Clouds Dim Sky...

It has been at best a partly sunny day across the northern half of
Alabama. At least above Clanton, a good deal of cirrus and
cirrocumulus clouds has been obscuring the sunshine. South of
Clanton, skies have been a little sunnier. Temperatures over the
Tennessee Valley have been in the 40s because the clouds have been a
little heavier. Over the middle part of the state, readings have been
in the lower and middle 50s, about as expected. Those clouds are
being borne eastward on the southern branch of a split jetstream flow
that is coming out of the Pacific Ocean.

FOR THE REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Lows tonight will drop into the middle
30s under a partly cloudy sky. The day will start partly cloudy
tomorrow, and pretty much stay that way. By tomorrow morning, another
cold front will be barreling our way. It should slip through the area
between mid-morning and mid-afternoon, depending on your location. It
will be signified by a northwest wind shift. Those winds will pick up
a bit, and average from 8-16 mph tomorrow afternoon and evening. It
will be quite cold Sunday night, with lows behind the front dropping
into the middle 20s.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Sunny and cool conditions will prevail on Monday,
with highs likely staying in the 40s. Monday night will be even
cooler than Sunday night, with lows in the middle and lower 20s.
After that cool start, highs will moderate into the 50s on Tuesday and
be near 60 on Wednesday. Low pressure will dive south of us on
Thursday, bringing with it a chance of showers, but the cold air
should stay north of the moisture, thank goodness.

TROPICS: The North Atlantic Hurricane Season came to a close on
Thursday, and hopefully it will stay closed until next year. But
there are other tropical cyclones going on around the world, and they
are interesting to look at from time to time. Typhoon Durian is
moving westward toward Vietnam over the South China Sea. The storm is
a shadow of its former self, with top winds of 100 mph, or category
two status. It is expected to weaken slowly before making landfall
tomorrow. On Thursday, Durian became the fourth typhoon to strike the
Philippines this year. Over in the Indian Ocean Hurricane Theatre,
Tropical Cyclone Anita dissipated while over the Mozambique Channel
between Mozambique and the island of Madagascar. The short lived
storm had reached tropical storm status. In the South Pacific,
Cyclone 04P is moving near Vanuatu, away from the Solomon Islands and
New Guinea.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Two typhoons in less than a week brought a
devastating one-two punch to the northern Philippines. Just four days
after Typhoon Winnie caused landslides that killed over 500 people,
Typhoon Nanmadol impacted the same region with 115 mph winds. Winds
gusted as high as 138 mph. The toll from both storms: over 650 dead
and 400 missing. All logging was banned by the country's President
after the massive landslides were blamed on illegal tree cutting.

MOTORCYCLE RIDE--DECEMBER 2nd
BENEFITING THE ELDRIDGE CHILDREN'S HOME

Come join us in a fantastic motorcycle ride with a great cause!

It's the 4th Annual Eldridge Children's Home Benefit Ride. The home,
located in Eldridge just off Hwy 78 and State Hwy 13 in Northwest
Alabama, has been in operation since 1948. It houses 30 children in
all age groups; they are educated in public schools, attend local
churches and are raised within the campus in homes. The home accepts
no state or federal money and operates on donations from area churches
and individuals.

Motorcycle riders get together for a ride to benefit this home. Riders
are able to fulfill a special "Christmas Wish List" from each child
and help operate this home all year long. Riders are encouraged to
bring gift cards from any retail outlet or give a donation via check,
made payable to Eldridge Children's Home.
This home has a 501(c)3 status, so donations are tax deductible.

Weather will not be a factor--just be there for the children.
The first Saturday in December, all roads lead to Eldridge.

...Cool Weekend...

It seems this season that I am especially remembering how much that I
loved Christmas music growing up. I still do today, but back then, it
was everything from Thanksgiving to New Years. And the Christmas
television specials. None finer than the Charlie Brown Christmas.
Did you know that Charles Schultz, the creator of the cartoon was
warned that adding Linus telling the Christmas story was considered to
be quite risky because of its religious significance? It made it the
most endearing of all Holiday specials.

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Were getting off to a chilly start across
the area this morning, but not nearly as cold as we thought a week or
so ago. Alabama is under the forward edge of a broad upper level
trough. We will see patchy high clouds today across the area.
Temperatures will warm into the middle 50s. Skies will be partly
cloudy tonight with lows again in the middle 30s. Sunday looks like a
carbon copy of today, but another trough will be passing to our north
late on Sunday pushing a reinforcing cold front across the area.
Cool and dry weather will prevail on Monday and Tuesday. Readings may
stay in the 40s on Monday and definitely be limited to the 50s on
Tuesday. Look for another front on Wednesday, and it will be dry
also. This additional reinforcing shot of cool air will keep us
around seasonal norms through the end of the week. A low pressure
wave will be sliding along the Texas and Louisiana coast by Friday.
There is some concern that the airmass might be cold enough to allow
for some wintry precipitation. That chances seems small for now, but
will warrant monitoring.

WILD STORM: This weeks powerful storm will go down in the record
books. It produced blizzard conditions in Oklahoma, Tulsa's second
greatest single day snow on record, thundersnow in many locations, an
F1 tornado in Demopolis, an unconfirmed tornado in Pennsylvania last
night and wind gusts to near hurricane force in many locations.

PHILIPPINES RAVAGED BY SUPERTYPHOON: Typhoon Durian was the fourth
typhoon to hit the Philippines this season. At last report, nearly
400 people had died since the storm brought 155 mph winds to the
Central Philippines on Thursday. Durian struck in the same general
area as Typhoon Xangsane, which made landfall on September 27th.

ON THIS DATE IN HURRICANE FORECASTING HISTORY: Under intense
pressure to improve hurricane forecasts after the deadly Labor
Hurricane of 1935, the U.S. Weather Bureau decentralized its hurricane
forecasting function by creating regional hurricane stations in
Florida, Louisiana and Puerto Rico. The main tracking center was
located in Jacksonville FL. Prior to this time, all hurricane
forecasts came from Washington DC. A fourth center would be added
after the surprise 1938 hurricane that struck New England hard.

CALL PRESTIGE ALARMS--WE ARE DIFFERENT.
GIVE US A CHANCE!

Prestige Alarm specializes in monitoring security systems without the
use of expensive phone lines or unreliable cell phones.

How do we do this? Prestige Alarm is one of the few companies who
monitors with an UL listed FCC licensed radio network.
In a typical system, if your phone line is cut or fails, then you have
no communication to the outside world.

Since we do not use phone lines, we can still dispatch the fire or
police when the emergency requires. Despite cut phone lines, storms or
over worked cell phones, we still get the signal through.

We do not offer the free systems like some of the other security
companies. But you do not want to trust in free equipment to protect
the people who are close to you.

SOME COLD NIGHTS AHEAD: Quite a stormy night across Alabama, but
take heart, some extremely nice weather is ahead for the next five
days or so if you don't mind some cold nights. A general freeze is
expected tonight with lows by mid morning in the mid 20s across
Central Alabama and some low 20s in the North Alabama valleys. The
weekend looks like mostly sunshine, but a fresh supply of arctic air
will arrive on Monday sending our temperatures down to the low 20s by
Tuesday morning. In fact, next Tuesday morning could be our coldest
morning so far this season.

Skies cleared rather quickly this morning and temperatures kept
falling until midday. There was scattered wind damage in at least five
counties across Alabama last night from Marengo NE to Jefferson
County. By far, the more serious damage was around the Demopolis.
Most of the damage in the other counties consisted of uprooted trees.
The amazing part about all of this was that no actual thunderstorms
were involved. Instead, it was low-topped heavy showers, but even
those sometimes can produce a small tornado when the conditions are
right aloft. The NWS reported this afternoon that it was an F1
tornado, which touched down 3 miles SW of Demopolis at 9:30 p.m. It
traveled for a distance of 1.2 miles and was 150 yards wide. It
started near US-80 and Maria Avenue. Several large trees were blown
over on homes producing significant damage. Several more large trees
destroyed a few mobile homes. An apartment complex had significant
roof damage and a few mobile homes were rolled over.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Most people from Texas to the Midwest had no
thoughts of global warming today. Much of the area was paralyzed with
freezing rain, snow and sleet, not to mention bitter cold. In Chicago,
the final snow depth was expected to be 8-10 inches in the western
suburbs and 4-6 inches south of I-55. Another surge of arctic air will
engulf the Windy City by Sunday keeping the highs only in the teens…in
St. Louis, freezing rain and sleet put down a coating of ice and 2-5
inches of snow accumulated on top of that. 565,000 were without power
in metro St. Louis and I-70 was closed for 60 miles in the middle part
of the state.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After two days and two nights with two
grandkids and a lot of other commotion, Little Miss Molly had to deal
with some severe weather last night. As usual, she headed for the
hills when the strong wind and heavy rain moved in. Today it was
almost like she was having a hangover trying to get caught up on her
beauty naps. She simply melted into my recliner. She did not make me
go on a long walk until almost noon. Immediately we noticed that every
single one of the leaves had blown off the sassafras tree and the Old
Crow Motel is a stark outline. We are getting into my second favorite
season of the year. Life goes on....

A 50-DEGREE PLUNGE IN TEMPERATURE: Between now and daybreak
Saturday, we believe the temperature across Central Alabama will
plunge 50 degrees with a significant freeze by Saturday morning.
Temperatures reached the mid 70s this afternoon and even near 80 down
in South Alabama. We look for mid 20s at daybreak Saturday.

A very strong cold front will move quickly east across Alabama late
tonight and early Friday morning. We may have to deal with a risk of
severe weather during the night. Here in Central Alabama, don't be
surprised if we get a severe thunderstorm watch by around 8 or 9
o'clock tonight. However, we think the main danger of strong to severe
thunderstorms will be later tonight and extending over into the early
morning hours tomorrow. We also have a fairly unusual problem tonight
and early Friday as we deal with strong west winds gusting over 40 mph
at times even with no thunderstorms in the vicinity. This is due to
conditions aloft and also a strong low pressure area passing NW of
Alabama. On the ridges, we could see gusts as high as 50 mph and that
could bring down some trees.

We think the arctic cold front will hold off until after midnight,
but when it passes, the thermometer will nose dive. Showers should end
Friday morning with clearing later in the day. The weekend, and even
into Monday and Tuesday, should be mostly clear. A resurge of colder
air will drop the temperature to about 26 Monday morning and maybe
even lower Tuesday morning.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: A big swath of the Central USA from the
Northern Plains and Midwest down to Texas getting hit by an unusually
severe cold outbreak for so early in the season. It has been an
especially raw day across Kansas, Nebraska and North Texas with strong
north winds, blowing snow and bitter cold. Places like St. Louis will
get a total accumulation of snow, sleet and freezing rain of between 6
and 9 inches…coldest in the lower 48 this morning was 23 below zero
north of Craig in NW Colorado…17 inches of snow from this storm at
Aspen Springs, Colorado and 18 inches just SW of Boulder…a huge change
for Laredo, Texas. They had 90 yesterday—they should be down to 30 by
morning with the wind chill in the low 20s. That will be a 60-degree
plunge.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Two of our grandkids visiting with us
the last 2 days and 2 nights…putting up and decorating Christmas tree.
All of this blew Little Miss Molly's mind. She is so set in her ways
that she likes to get up, go for a walk, have a treat and a long
morning nap. All of that has been disrupted. She walks around with a
blank look on her face…she is also been flushed out of her favorite
chair in the living area to take power naps…several e-mails in
sympathy with the Ingram family in Marion who lost their 14-year-old
dog recently. That family loves pets and they have a lot more. Life
goes on....

...Severe Storms Possible Tonight...

A sharp cold front is poised to move through Alabama late tonight, and
promises to bring a major change to our weather during the next 36
hours. In advance of the front' arrival, today will be another very
mild day with south winds increasing to near 20 mph at times this
afternoon. There will be a few passing showers during the day, but the
rain won't be continuous or especially heavy.

TO THE WEST: On the cold air side of the front, a major snowstorm will
develop from near Tulsa to St. Louis and on into the Great Lakes
region near Chicago and Cleveland. Within this area some spots will
see over six inches of snow, preceded by freezing rain and ice this
morning making for some very difficult travel. Winter storm warnings
cover a large part of mid- America today.

SEVERE STORMS TONIGHT? Back in the warm sector, the Storm Prediction
Center maintains a slight risk of severe weather for virtually all of
Alabama and the adjacent states.

The good news is that instability values are marginal for severe
weather, but very impressive dynamics will still bring the risk of a
line of storms with the potential for damaging winds. We also can't
rule out the risk of a few rotating storms due to high levels of low
level shear within the lowest one kilometer of the atmosphere. The
greatest risk of severe thunderstorms in Alabama will come from about
6:00 tonight through 3:00 a.m. At this time we are projecting rainfall
amounts of one-half to one inch tonight as the showers and storms roll
through.

A FRIGID FRIDAY: The Arctic front will roll through Alabama during the
pre-dawn hours tomorrow, and the edge of the bitterly cold airmass
over the central part of the nation will slip into our state. At
daybreak tomorrow morning, temperatures should range from about 32 in
Muscle Shoals to 40 in Birmingham to 50 in Alexander City. Those
temperatures should fall slowly during the morning hours as cold air
advection continues. As the sky clears during the day, there might be
a some recovery during the afternoon, but not much.

Most communities along the I-20 corridor, including Birmingham will
hover somewhere in the 38 to 42 degree range much of the day with an
icy north wind making it feel even colder. It will be quite a slap in
the face considering the recent run of very mild weather.
For now the weekend looks cool and dry. We should be in the 25 to 30
degree range early Saturday morning, followed by highs in the mid 50s
Saturday and Sunday. A fresh supply of cold air drops in here Sunday
night, keeping temperatures below normal for at least the first half
of next week. Today will be our last day of 70s for quite a while.

BYE BYE HURRICANE SEASON: The 2006 Atlantic hurricane season ends
today without a single hurricane striking the U.S. - a stark contrast
to the record-breaking 2005 season that killed more than 1,500 people
and left thousands homeless along the Gulf Coast. Nine named storms
and five hurricanes formed this season, and just two of the hurricanes
were considered major.

Since we do not use phone lines, we can still dispatch the fire or

POSSIBLE SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THURSDAY NIGHT: We are going to have
some major changes in weather over the next two days. It will include
a risk of some severe thunderstorms and a rapid drop in temperature.
Let's take first things first. There will be occasional showers
tonight and Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms will become more
numerous Thursday night. Some of the thunderstorms could be severe.
Our best assessment at this time is that there will be more of a
danger of some damaging winds, but we can't rule out an isolated
tornado. The best time window for all of the rough stuff appears to be
late Thursday evening and extending into the very early morning hours
Friday. The NWS/Storm Prediction Center has virtually all of Alabama
under a slight risk.

The sharp cold front, that we have been advertising, will move
through Central Alabama between midnight and daybreak Friday morning.
Temperatures will quickly drop into the mid 30s Friday morning and
struggle to reach the low 40s later in the day, even with clearing.
Our coldest temperatures will be Saturday morning in the upper 20s.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Believe me, there are major problems in parts
of the country due to the coldest arctic air that has visited the USA
since last winter. Big changes in the Plains today. This afternoon,
while the temperature was 72 in St. Louis, it was 28 in Kansas City.
The Dallas-Ft. Worth area had the dubious honor of being under a
Tornado Watch and a Winter Storm Watch at the same time. There is a
wide variety of Winter Storm Watches, Warnings, Ice Storm Warnings,
you name it, in the nation's midsection. In Oklahoma City, freezing
rain tonight will change to snow after midnight. Snow will continue
Thursday morning with 4-5 inches additional accumulation. Motorists
are going to be slipping and sliding over a wide area…some of the
coldest temperatures this morning included 26 below zero at West
Yellowstone, Montana and 25 below at Rogers Pass, Montana. Rogers Pass
has the distinction of recording the coldest ever in the lower 48
states—70 below zero.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This will not be an uplifting story
today. It is a great joy to have pets in our lives, but at some point
something happens and it brings great sadness. One of our daily
readers, Saundra Ingram in Marion, is very sad along with her husband
Buddy, because one of their longtime companions, KoKoa, has died. She
was almost 16 years old and she brought a lot of happiness to that
family for all those years. They adopted her in South Carolina in
1991. Because her health has been failing, they tried to really spend
a lot of time with her and give her lots of special attention. Last
week she had two seizures and they realized it was time to put her to
sleep. Her liver was failing. Saundra had been carrying her around
like a baby for over 4 months. We will have to face this with Little
Miss Molly one of these days and I cannot stand the thought. As soon
as I read Saundra's e-mail, I must admit I shed some tears and I am a
strong person emotionally. I immediately got Little Miss Molly and
hugged her....

...Much Colder By Friday...

Enjoy the mild weather today and tomorrow; we will have a slap in the
face on Friday as much colder air returns rather abruptly to Alabama
and the Deep South. Today will be mostly cloudy, and a few passing
showers are possible, but widespread rain isn't likely. Once again the
mercury should exceed the 70 degree mark in many places this
afternoon. While we enjoy the mild weather, brutally cold air
continues to drop southward over the western half the nation. The
leading edge of the cold air will move into Texas, Oklahoma, and
Missouri today where strong to severe thunderstorms could develop
along the cold front.

MESSY THURSDAY: Tomorrow, a wave of low pressure is expected to form
along the front, and will bring a wide variety of foul weather to the
nation. On the cold air side of the front, a major ice and snow storm
will unfold from the northern part of Texas all the way to the Great
Lakes. Some cities expecting snow and ice problems include Tulsa,
Little Rock, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, and Cleveland.
Significant travel problems are likely in these areas.

On our side of the front, in the warm sector, there is a risk of
strong to severe thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night
all the way from far East Texas into Alabama. While the system will be
very dynamic with strong wind fields, the surface based instability
values are very marginal for severe weather. Still, we will need to be
watching the sky closely tomorrow night. For now, it looks like the
best chance of strong to severe thunderstorms in Alabama will come
from about 6:00 p.m. tomorrow through 3:00 a.m. Friday.

A FRIGID FRIDAY: The latest data suggests the cold front will pass
through North Alabama during the pre-dawn hours Friday morning. This
will put the cold air in here a little ahead of schedule, so we could
begin the day around 40 degrees, and with steady cold air advection
during the day the mercury will probably settle into the 30s and stay
there with an icy wind.

The deeper moisture will be moving out as the colder air moves in, so
the chance of any significant freezing or frozen precipitation looks
fairly small at this time. But, a few snow flurries are not out of the
question. The sky should begin to clear Friday afternoon.

WEEKEND PEEK: We should begin the weekend with temperatures in the 27
to 32 degree range early Saturday morning. We expect a partly sunny
sky both Saturday and Sunday with highs in the mid 50s. A secondary
shot of cold air moves in here Sunday night.

DID YOU KNOW? 24 below was the low yesterday morning at Browning,
Montana, located in the extreme north part of the state just east of
the front range of the Rockies. That town is famous in weather circles
because it holds the USA record for the biggest 24 hour drop in
temperature, an amazing 100 degrees! Alabama's warm spot yesterday
afternoon was Dothan with a balmy 78 degrees.

TWO MORE MILD DAYS BEFORE IT TURNS COLD: Unseasonably mild is the
situation across Alabama now and it will stay that way through
Thursday. Moisture is slowly increasing and we can't rule out the
possibility of a few showers through Wednesday. By far, it looks like
our best time window for showers and thunderstorms will be late
Thursday—mainly Thursday night and very early Friday. During that time
period, showers and thunderstorms will become more numerous. Slight
chance that a few thunderstorms could become severe during that time.

The big very cold arctic air mass over Canada and the NW USA is
having to fight its way southward because winds aloft are not
immediately favorable. However, it will eventually get here. The front
should move quickly through Central Alabama late Thursday night or
very early Saturday morning. There will be some lingering showers and
possibly a few thunderstorms Friday morning. It will be windy and
turning much colder with falling temperatures. It is almost a coin
toss what the early morning temperature will be Friday. We are
projecting 49 for Central Alabama, but temperatures will be falling to
near 35 late in the day. Since the wind will be NW up to 25 mph, it
will be a noticeable change to what we are having now. Saturday should
be dry with early morning lows in the upper 20s or lower 30s. The air
mass will be shallow at first.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Did you know that rain and snow that falls on
Helena, Montana finds its way to the Gulf of Mexico through New
Orleans? Same story for Denver and Cheyenne. It is the mighty
Mississippi in action draining a huge part of the lower 48
states…bitter cold over Western Montana this morning. The lowest
temperature I could find in the lower 48 states was 25 below zero at
Gleason, Montana, 24 below at Browning and 21 below at St. Mary…places
like St. Louis and other central cities in the USA will have to deal
with some freezing rain, sleet and snow as this arctic air mass
insists on pushing its way southward. There could be a change over to
snow after the freezing rain and sleet.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Two of our grandkids were here
overnight and I wish you could see Little Miss Molly when they are
around. She especially loves children. Last night we switched beds
with Molly and she slept in the king sized bed. When I opened the door
this morning, she zoomed out like a rocket to wake up the grandkids.
Not only that, but I took her out early for a bathroom break. She
wanted to immediately come back inside and play with the kids.
Normally she wants to go on a long walk…be sure and read the story on
the front page of the Birmingham News Lifestyle Section this morning
by Scottie Vickery. It is a story about a very special dog that will
absolutely warm your heart, even if you don't like dogs. Life goes on
and I certainly love my little 9-pound pal. She is not human, but she
is the closest thing to it.....

...Another Glorious November Day...

If you liked yesterday's weather, you will most certainly like today.
And tomorrow won't be any worse either, save for a few clouds that
will sneak in late in the day. Both days will features highs near 70
after early morning lows near 40, mostly sunny skies and light
southeasterly breezes.

CHANGES AHEAD: Tuesday may dawn mostly cloudy, and it will certainly
become cloudy as the day moves along and moisture levels increase.
Temperatures will again warm into the lower 70s. The GFS hints at a
few showers during the day, so we may have to introduce slight rain
chances. By Wednesday morning, a cold front will trail from
intensifying low pressure over the Great Lakes states. This front
will be propelled by a powerful trough digging into the central part
of the nation. Alabama will be in the warm sector ahead of the
frontal system, with additional showers and maybe a thunderstorm
forming Wednesday along with an increasing southerly wind. But the
main action will likely come on Thursday.

PROBLEM ONE: Severe weather may be a possibility with the
thunderstorms along and ahead of the line on Thursday. The SPC
restricts their forecast of that possibility to South Alabama, but I
won't be surprised to see it across Central and Northern sections of
the state also. The line of storms will move slowly across the state
during the day Thursday. With the line becoming parallel to the upper
flow, two things happen: the forward progress will slow, allowing for
heavier rain, and…

PROBLEM TWO: The cold air fills in right behind the front. This
means that freezing temperatures may move in quickly enough to allow
for some wintry precipitation late Thursday night into Friday morning.
If you believe the GFS run from Saturday morning, you could picture
3-4 inches of snow across North Alabama by noon Friday. Even greater
amounts could fall over western Tennessee and northern Mississippi.

COLD WAVE WARNING: J.B. was wondering the other day why the U.S.
National Weather Service stopped issuing Cold Wave Warnings. They
were issued when temperatures were expected to drop rapidly from near
or above normal temperatures to significantly below normal. They are
still issued by Environment Canada, their Weather Service. While this
week's arctic airmass would probably not qualify for a Cold Wave
Warning, it still will be a rude awakening after our recent warm
spell. Temperatures will drop below freezing after midnight and
continue in a free fall through the day on Friday. Throw in a strong
northwesterly wind gusting to over 25 mph at times, a little light
snow, and it could be one miserable day. Skies should clear by Friday
night, allowing for the coldest air so far this season. Readings
could drop into the teens over North Alabama by Saturday morning.

...Chilly Nights Ahead...

Alabama continues under the influence of a beautiful weather pattern
with high pressure dominating much of the country. But changes are on
the way. And those changes are going to be significant. More in a
minute…

NICE MORNING: Skies are clear across Alabama on this Sunday.
Readings started off in the middle 30s to the lower 40s in most
locations. The state's cold spot was Meridianville, with 34F. DeSoto
State Park was not far behind at 35F. Several locations hit 36.
Officially, Birmingham dropped to 41F. Highs will warm quickly into
the lower 70s again at most locations under abundant sunshine. It
will be back into the upper 30s to near 40 tonight under mostly clear
skies. Monday will be another nice day, but the party will be slowly
winding down. A few clouds will appear during the day. As high
pressure nudges far enough to the east, moisture levels will start to
increase and skies will become mostly cloudy overnight.

CHANGES AHEAD: A few showers will break out across the area Tuesday
in the moist southerly flow. Highs will still edge up to around 70
degrees. The showers will continue through the overnight hours and
increase even more on Wednesday. By Wednesday morning, a sharp cold
front will be pushing towards Alabama. Behind it, much colder air
will spill into the center of the country. Rain and thunderstorms
will become widespread on Thursday ahead of the front. Heavy rainfall
is possible, and though there will be storms, they should not be
strong. By Thursday afternoon, much colder air will be overspreading
western Tennessee and northern Mississippi. This colder air will edge
into Northwest Alabama Thursday evening. The burning question has
been: will it snow behind the front? The past few runs of the GFS
have not been as bullish on this idea, and point toward a brief
changeover to snow over the Tennessee Valley early Friday morning with
light rain or drizzle elsewhere. In any case, Friday promises to be a
miserable day with temperatures falling through the 30s, a strong
north wind and a little light precipitation. Look out for some cold
readings Friday night, when temperatures will fall well into the 20s
in most locations.

RETURNING HOME: No significant travel problems expected east of the
Rockies today. Out west, a developing system will bring adverse
weather from the mountains of California into the Pacific Northwest.
Overall, it has been a quiet holiday travel wise. Really, the only
problem has been the strong coastal low that plagued the East Coast on
Wednesday into Thanksgiving Day.

TROPICAL TROUBLE? Convection continues over the far southern
Caribbean north of Panama. This activity is associated with an upper
trough and any development would be slow. This is a climatologically
favored area for tropical cyclone development in November.

...Still Mild Through Thursday...

Moisture levels will be increasing across Alabama during the next 48
hours, meaning the sky will be cloudy at times, but there is little in
the way of a trigger for rain, so most communities will remain dry
through tomorrow. And, despite the clouds afternoon temperatures will
remain very mild for late November; we expect a high between 68 and 72
degrees on a daily basis through Thursday. This is about 10 degrees
above normal; the average high for today in Birmingham is 60.

TUMBLING TEMPERATURES: The coldest air so far this season continues to
nose southward into the U.S. Yesterday, some places in northern
Montana remained below zero all day, and the leading edge of the
really cold air this morning is lined up from near Aberdeen, South
Dakota to Salt Lake City, Utah. The front will make only slow progress
during mid-week, and should finally enter the northwest corner of
Alabama late Thursday night.

While a few scattered showers are possible during the day Thursday, at
this point it looks like the main band of rain and storms ahead of the
front will affect our area from about midnight Thursday night through
midday Friday. Some strong storms could be involved, but for now
instability levels look pretty marginal for a major severe weather
threat.

SHARP TEMPERATURE GRADIENT: The temperature forecast for Friday will
greatly depend on where you are. For places like Muscle Shoals and
Florence, in the northwest corner of the state, they should remain in
the 30s all day with an icy north wind. Maybe even some morning snow
flurries. However, south of Birmingham in places like Alex City,
Clanton, and Marion, temperatures should still be in the 60s at midday
with showers and storms tapering off.

For the Birmingham/Tuscaloosa/Anniston/Gadsden areas, we expect the
mercury on Friday to drop from the 55 to 60 degree range at daybreak
to the 35 to 40 degree range by evening. The prospect of snow flakes
down this way looks pretty small at this time.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weekend should be cool and dry with daytime highs
generally in the 50s; there is a good chance we begin the weekend with
lows in the 20s early Saturday morning. There might be some high
cloudiness around on Saturday and Sunday, but a decent amount of
sunshine should get through.

ROAMING: In Great Falls, Montana, the high yesterday was three degrees
below zero, 74 degrees colder than Birmingham's high of 71. Great
Falls will remain below zero until sometime tomorrow afternoon. The
community of Anatone, Washington (elevation 4,000 feet) picked up 20
inches of new snow yesterday. Snow showers moved through Seattle much
of the day. In contrast, the high yesterday at Laguardia Airport in
New York City yesterday was 65, a new record high for the date.
