...Ana, Bill and Claudette...

Back in 1979, they started using female names in the Atlantic for the
first time. My best friend's family had three of the first four
names in the list, Ana (Ann), Claudette and David. David was retired
that year after being one of the worst hurricanes in the history of
the Caribbean. I thought back then that it would have been so cool if
the B storm had been Bill that year. Then in 1997, again in 2003, and
this year, my names was on the list. There are increasing signs that
Bill could be a powerful storm, but might likely recurve our to sea.
Good!

TROPICS: For a detailed look at all three current Atlantic systems,
head over to AlabamaWX.com for the latest information. In summary,
Ana could well have weakened back into a tropical wave by the time you
read this, challenged by stronger than expected wind shear and dry
air. Bill will be intensifying as it steams westward. It should
gradually curve to the west northwest and northwest with time, missing
the islands and recurving off the U.S. East Coast. Finally, a
disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico could be a tropical depression or
even a tropical
storm by the time you see this. If it does become a tropical storm,
it will be Claudette.

OUR WEATHER: Claudette, or the disturbance that could become her,
will bring rain, storms and wind to the Alabama/Northwest Florida
coast. This rain will spread northward into South Central Alabama
during the afternoon and the rest of Central Alabama tonight and
Monday. I would expect about a one in three chance of rain today in
the 20/59 corridor with a 60% chance on Monday. Good rain chances
will continue into Tuesday as the disturbance continues moving slowly
northwestward. Rain chances should back off on Wednesday and
Thursday. A sagging front will bring rain chances back up for Friday
with increased rain chances again.

WEATHERBRAINS: Forty years ago today, all eyes were on a hurricane in
the Gulf of Mexico. Before the day was over, it would become a record
breaker. We have a special show planned for you Monday night on
WeatherBrains. Renowned weather expert Jack Williams will join the
cast and crew to recreate the infamous storm. Hear the show at www.WeatherBrains.com
, or subscribe on iTunes. Get information about the show on Twitter
@WeatherBrains. Sign up and you could win a copy of the book
Hurricane Camille: Monster Storm of the Gulf Coast by Philip Hearn.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: The Elbe River normally flows peacefully
through the historic city of Dresden, Germany, but on this date it was
a angry brown torrent that looked more like a fast flowing lake than a
river as it churned through the town. Swollen with floodwaters from
the Czech River Vltava, the Elbe reached a record flood stage of 30.5
feet and was still rising. Expected to crest at 31.5 feet, the river
normally is at about six feet in August. The floodwaters threatened
cultural landmarks around the city's square, including the famous
Opera House and Zwinger Gallery of Old Masters. 33,000 people were
evacuated from Dresden. The worst floods in centuries were surging
through country after country in Central and Eastern Europe, including
Czechoslovakia, Germany, Austria and Russia. Waters were finally
receding in the Czech capital of Prague. At least 104 people had died
in the flooding.

..Getting Busy In The Tropics...

I didn't realize that I get two storms named for me this year.
Guillermo is my Spanish name, and is the name of the seventh named
storm in the eastern Pacific. Guillermo became a major hurricane
overnight, but is expected to begin a slow weakening today. Itt is
not a threat to land. The second named storm in the Atlantic will be
Bill, the name I go by every day. I don't guess my French name,
Guillaume, is on anybody's hurricane list.

ANA: Tropical storm Ana was named this morning. The storm is 1,000
miles east southeast of the island of Guadeloupe and about 1,250 miles
east southeast of the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is moving west at 16
mph. A general west and west northwest motion will carry the storm to
a point over the northern Leeward Islands and Virgin Islands early
Monday It is expected to track north of Hispaniola and into the
Bahamas by Wednesday afternoon. By Thursday, it could be threatening
Southeast Florida. Of course, it could be anywhere from Cuba to South
Carolina. The system will undergo some wind shear, which could keep
it from becoming a hurricane. The NHC forecast
accepts that premise.

BILL: Tropical depression three was named at 10 a.m. This system
will likely become Tropical Storm Bill later today. It will be on a
west northwest track over the next five days, which will carry it to a
point near the islands of the Northeast Caribbean by Thursday. Then
where it goes is anyone's guess, but the official NHC forecast carries
it to a point near or just northeast of the Leeward Islands by
Wednesday, as a hurricane.

FOR THE REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Moisture levels are going to be on the
rise through the weekend attended by an increase in showers and
storms. Expect isolated storms today and widely scattered showers and
storms tomorrow afternoon. Highs will be in the lower 90s. Look for
humid lows in the lower 70s.

NEW WORK WEEK: Moisture levels will continue to increase into the
early part of the week as the subtropical high continues to pump
southeasterly winds into Alabama and the Deep South. This means
scattered showers and storms will be the rule each day, with plenty of
humidity. Temperatures will be tolerable though limited a bit by the
shower activity. Highs will be in the upper 80s. Lows will be in the
lower 70s.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's all about Hurricane Camille this weekend as we
commemorate the 40th anniversary of one of the worst hurricanes in
history. Camille made landfall on the Mississippi coast on Sunday
evening, August 17, 1969. Read fascinating actual advisories,
discussions and recon reports in real time on AlabamaWX.com. Then
download and listen to WeatherBrains episode 186 which will feature a
discussion about the storm with famous weather author Jack Williams.
The show will be available by late Monday at night at www.WeatherBrains.com
or on iTunes.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: A scorching heat wave across Europe
contributed to more than 19,000 heat related deaths during the first
two weeks of August. Temperatures soared to 104F in France. The heat
wave in France was hotter than the country's previously hottest summer
– 1947. The disaster quickly became a political issue as critics of
the government claimed that it was unprepared. The city of
Marseilles, France had a hot weather plan in place after enduring a
similar event in 1983 that killed several hundred elderly people.
Under the plan, vulnerable people were brought to the hospital before
they became ill.

...Camille Anniversary Weekend...

Monday is the 40th anniversary of terrible Hurricane Camille. One of
only three category five hurricanes to strike the United States,
Camille struck a devastating blow on the Mississippi coast on August
17, 1969. All weekend, we will feature historic bulletins and
discussions from the National Hurricane Center. Monday night, we will
record a special edition of WeatherBrains featuring the regular cast
of characters and author Jack Williams. We will tell the story of
Camille with J.B. reading some of the original advisories and Jack
telling us about some interesting things that happened behind the
scenes. www.WeatherBrains.com or on iTunes.

TROPICS: Things are getting interesting in the tropical Atlantic. The
remnants of tropical depression number two is about 350 miles east
of the Windward Islands this morning. This system is battling some of
that Saharan dust, but will encounter increasing sea surface
temperatures as it continues moving west northwest. It could regain
tropical depression status, but it may well be overtaken by our second
larger disturbance after the weekend.

That circulation is large enough to have tapped some dry air well to
its north, which has sapped its convection a bit. This system will
become a hurricane early in the week and could impact the northern
Windwards and Virgin Islands by Wednesday. Then where it goes is
anybody's guess. One potential track is across the Greater Antilles
(Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Cuba, and into the Gulf.
It's just too early to tell.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Moisture levels will be increasing through the
weekend. Expect isolated thunderstorms today, increasing a bit on
Sunday, but still staying widely scattered.

A NEW WORK WEEK: Scattered thunderstorms, mainly of the afternoon and
evening variety will be the rule in the Monday-Friday time frame. The
increased clouds and storms will push afternoon highs back into the
upper 80s. Lows will be in the lower 70s. Expect an inch of rain on
average this week across Central Alabama.

WEATHERBRAINS FUTURE GUESTS: Get ready for more hurricane
discussions on WeatherBrains episode 187, which will feature Ivor van
Heerden on the failures during Katrina. On September 1, weather
legend Tom Skilling will join the panel. Old friend John Gordon will
check in from Louisville on the Labor Day show. Go to www.WeatherBrains.com
to listen, or subscribe at iTunes. Follow the show on Twitter
@WeatherBrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Near Whitehall, New York, lightning struck a
farmhand. After he was revived, en-route to the hospital, his
ambulance was hit by lightning, resulting in a fire and explosion
which slightly injured the medics. The farmhand later died at the
hospital. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

..Showers Gradually Returning..

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story that we should all appreciate for
one simple reason—our temperatures are close to average for August
when they could be blistering hot. For example, in Birmingham two
years ago today the high was 104. Another slight bit of encouragement:
on Sunday our long-term average high temperature will fall back one
degree from 91 to 90 then down to 88 by the last day of August. Please
believe me when I say we can still get some blistering hot
temperatures well into September. The year 1925 was a historic year
when the Birmingham temperature exceeded 100 on 10 days in September.
Two years later another major heat wave, with temperatures over 100 on
5 days.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: Moisture is slowly returning to Alabama and, for
the next five days or so, we will see some scattered showers and
thunderstorms almost every day. They should be extremely scarce
Saturday, increasing some on Sunday with our best chance probably on
Monday. We are still over 3 inches ahead on 2009 rain from our long-
term average.

AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and thunderstorms each day
through the weekend and into early next week. Because of more clouds
and showers, the high temperature along the immediate beach area
should stay under 90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The old Tropics are getting more interesting. The
latest computerized guidance on rain amounts shows as much as 4 inches
over the North and NE Gulf of Mexico for the 5 days ending Wednesday
with moderate to heavy amounts over much of Alabama and Georgia. Some
of this is due to tropical wave activity approaching the USA from the
east. Tropical Depression #2, which we thought would become Ana is
getting a little better organized halfway across the Atlantic.
Conditions are only marginally favourable, but it could possibly
become a named storm in the next couple of days. Further east, a broad
area of low pressure 250 miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands has
become a little less organized, but conditions are still favourable to
become a tropical depression in the next day or two. Closer to home a
tropical wave from Jamaica and Eastern Cuba northward into the Bahamas
should spread west to NW during the next couple of days. While it will
bring in some moisture, there is little chance of it becoming a named
storm. Of more immediate importance to Alabama are the showers and
thunderstorms over the NE Gulf of Mexico. There are no signs of an
organized storm. NHC thinks less than 30% chance of it becoming a
named storm, at least for the next two days.

DEADHORSE: I am still intrigued by the name of that extreme Northern
Alaska town. It so happens that it had the lowest temperature in any
of the 50 states this morning with 32. It is going to be very
interesting to watch Alaska again this winter. Remember, last winter
the temperature plunged to below 60 below zero in the small community
of Chicken, Alaska. Hottest yesterday was 117 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: As I mentioned before, I have received
numerous e-mails about Little Miss Molly and I have learned a whole
lot from them about the care of dogs over the last 7 years. In earlier
years, we had bad luck with three consecutive dogs, so we decided to
not get another one for at least 20 years. I will always regret that.
After those dogs, we had three cats—all of them killed by traffic in
front of our house. So, I am glad that Little Miss Molly is an inside
dog. She is a pure delight and I am obeying strict orders from the
majority owner to not give her human food. A lot of our readers have
strongly suggested the same thing. Life goes on.

...Mostly Dry Again Today...

QUIET WEATHER PATTERN: Our weather won't change much today… relatively
dry air covers the northern half of Alabama, and we expect a generally
dry day with a good supply of sunshine and a high around 90 degrees. A
rogue shower or storm could pop up somewhere this afternoon, but the
chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one in ten, and we
won't mention it in our formal forecast. Moisture levels will slowly
increase over the weekend; a few widely scattered afternoon showers
could show up tomorrow, with a slightly better risk by Sunday
afternoon. Otherwise, tomorrow and Sunday will be partly sunny with
highs in the 89 to 92 degree range.
Typical August weather is expected during the first half of next week,
with the risk of a few scattered, mostly afternoon or evening showers
and storms. Then, toward the end of the week, showers and storms could
increase with the approach of a surface front.

AT THE BEACH: Expect about 6 to 8 hours of sunshine tomorrow and
Sunday with a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs along the
immediate coast will be in the mid to upper 80s, with low 90s inland.
The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was
a warm 88 degrees.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical depression 2 weakened into a remnant low
late yesterday due to dry air surrounding the system; it is moving to
the west/northwest over the open water of the Atlantic, and will be
monitored for any sign of regeneration. To the east, a strong tropical
wave is southwest of the Cape Verde Islands, and has a chance of
becoming a tropical depression today. Conditions with this wave seem
to favor it ultimately becoming a tropical storm on the journey across
the big pond. This is a more low latitude system, meaning the dry air
won't be as much of a factor.

We also note a tropical wave moving through the eastern Caribbean;
upper air winds are fairly harsh in that region, and development, if
any, will be very slow in happening.

ON THIS DATE IN 1969: Tropical Storm Camille forms near the island of
Grand Cayman. From the beginning, it was evident that Camille would be
an explosive storm. First reports from the reconnaissance plane
indicated the storm had already reached tropical storm strength with a
central pressure of 999mb and winds of 55 mph. By afternoon, the storm
would already be classified as a hurricane with a central pressure of
964 mb.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...A Reasonable August...

HUMIDITY SLOWLY RETURNING: The month of August has been generally
good for us here in Alabama. High temperatures have been tolerable in
most occasions. After all, this is our second main summer month and we
could have temperatures over 100. In fact, long-term Birmingham
records dating back to the 1880s show that we have had 100 or higher
at some point on all but two dates in August. We are also okay on the
rain situation with an excess so far this year of 3.18 inches. Crops
are generally in good shape over most of the state.
We have had a series of little frontal boundaries that moved down into
the state this summer. The latest one has stalled down over South
Alabama. It will start moving back northward and our humidity will
gradually increase every day. The lower dew points yesterday and today
made it seem more comfortable, especially over North and Central
Alabama and we had a nice interlude of cool temperatures this morning.
A few examples of early morning lows:

62 Scrougeout and Broomtown
64 Scottsboro
65 Decatur, Hanceville, Russellville
66 Concord/Hueytown, Huntsville, Oneonta, Dora
67 Birmingham, Tuscaloosa

It will be almost that cool tonight, but lows for the rest of the week
and over the weekend will return to the lower 70s.

THE RAIN SITUATION: We look for another mostly sunny Friday. After
that, a slight chance of some afternoon thunderstorms on Saturday and
a slightly better chance on Sunday and Monday.

AT THE BEACH: Places like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Destin will
have very few showers Friday and Saturday with a better chance on
Sunday and Monday. High temperatures will vary from 88 to 92.

THE CONFUSING TROPICS: For the past several days, there were hints
that a tropical depression would develop into tropical storm Ana by
now. It has not happened. In fact, that disturbance weakened a bit
more overnight. That was tropical depression 2 and the latest
projection takes it westward and then northwestward passing well north
of Puerto Rico by Tuesday. Another disturbed area further east, a
tropical wave, is slowly becoming better organized. It could be a
tropical depression in the next couple of days. The National Hurricane
Center says there is a high chance (greater than 50%) of it being a
named storm during the next 48 hours.

ROAMING THE COUNTRYSIDE: 113 at Bullhead City, Arizona was the
hottest yesterday. 34 was the low this morning at both Stanley, Idaho
and Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. I sure would like to go back to Stanley
for another visit. The last time I was there, the one street in town
had a speed limit of 35 and the population was also 35. Wildfires
breaking out in the west, especially near Santa Cruz, California where
thousands of acres are involved. That typhoon that struck Taiwan and
then went into Eastern China dumped as much as 80 inches of rain.
Unbelievable!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure do enjoy getting feedback about
Little Miss Molly and almost every one that offers an opinion
encourages me to spend as much time as possible with that little girl
while she is so young, healthy and playful. With her 7th birthday
upcoming, she is still a dynamo. She ambushed me five times this
morning, every time I would go through the living area, ready for
another ballgame. Our annual termite inspection was today and Little
Miss Molly had to be the official greeter and wanted to accompany into
every room in the house. If dogs could be politicians, Little Miss
Molly could be the U.S. president. Life goes on.

...Lots of Summer Sunshine...

DRIER DAYS: A pretty large part of Alabama will be rain-free today as
drier air takes over; we believe any showers or thunderstorms this
afternoon should be mostly south of a line from Eufaula to Evergreen
to Mobile where deeper moisture lingers. The high will be close to 90
for most North Alabama communities with a good supply of sunshine.
Tomorrow will be similar with most of the showers down over the
southeast part of the state.

THE WEEKEND AND NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels will slowly rise, and we
will bring back the risk of a few scattered, mostly afternoon and
evening showers and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. The chance
of any one spot getting wet is about one in three, otherwise expect
partly sunny days and mostly fair nights. Very similar weather
continues into early next week.

TROPICS HEATING UP: Tropical depression two could very well be
tropical storm Ana by the time you read this; the system in the
eastern Atlantic is moving slowly to the west/northwest, and will
remain over open water during the next few days. Rapid strengthening
is not expected due to dry air surrounding the system and marginal sea
surface temperatures; the latest NHC track has Ana north of the Virgin
Islands by Monday. The primary American global computer model then
takes the system over the Bahamas, followed by a north turn and a
landfall on the middle Atlantic coast of the U.S. But, this is model
output only, and there is no skill in forecasting the position of a
tropical cyclone more than five days in advance. But, folks along the
Atlantic coast all the way from Miami to Boston will need to monitor
the progress of Ana next week. We also note a strong tropical wave is
south of the Cape Verde Islands in the East Atlantic, and this also
has a chance of becoming a tropical storm in the days ahead,
potentially tropical storm Bill.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham's rain total for the year 38.76", which is
3.18" above average. Anniston has a 2.24" surplus for the year, thanks
in part to a big two inch downpour Tuesday afternoon. Tuscaloosa
remains relatively dry, however… the total there is only 32.68" and
the deficiency for the year is 5.66".

COMFORTABLE AUGUST: Just two years ago, in 2007, we were in the midst
of a nasty heat wave with new daily record maximum temperatures on
eight consecutive days. The heat peaked on August 23 with a high of
105. But this August 2009 has been relatively comfortable with an
average high so far of 90. The coolest day was August 5 when the high
was only 85.

You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Slight Drop In Humidity...

A BREAK FROM THE BOOMERS: Plenty of showers and strong thunderstorms
around Alabama yesterday and way into the evening. A lot of places got
a drenching, while other people were left begging. There was even some
minor wind damage around Wetumpka and a few other places—mostly trees
and power lines down.

A NEW DAY: In sharp contrast to yesterday, the old frontal boundary
that we have talked about endlessly crept into Alabama and has slowed
over the central part of the state. This allows a slight drop in
humidity and a break from the showers and thunderstorms. In fact, the
only ones in progress this afternoon were near the coast.

When you first get up tomorrow morning to grab the morning paper or
walk the dog, you will notice a slight, but pleasant, feel to the air
as temperatures fall into the upper 60s. Look for some mid 60s over NE
Alabama. One of our beloved weather models drops the dew point to
around 63 for much of tomorrow afternoon. If that happens, you will
definitely feel the lower humidity despite temperatures close to 90.

This time of year we cannot expect that kind of weather forever. The
moisture will head back north giving us some scattered showers and
thunderstorms later Saturday and also on Sunday.

RAIN AMOUNTS: Again today we posted quite a list of 24-hour rain
amounts on our BLOG. We list only a few of the heavier amounts here:

2.01 Centreville
2.00 Livingston
1.95 Uniontown
2.21 Anniston Airport (mostly within 1 hour)

TROPICAL STORM ANA? Well, not quite. It is still a tropical
depression and remaining just below the strength that we can call it
Ana. The depression was over 600 miles west of the southernmost Cape
Verde Islands. It could become Tropical Storm Ana at almost any time.
The projected path takes it well north of Puerto Rico and curving up
toward Bermuda by early next week, but it is entirely too early to put
all of our eggs in one basket this quick.

AT THE BEACH: The weather will be decent all the way through the
weekend along the Alabama/NW Florida beaches. There will be some
scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. Not an all-day rain. The
high temperatures will back off a bit to the upper 80s.

ROAMING: 117 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday. Cold spots
this morning included 28 at McKinley Park, Alaska and 36 at Gunnison,
Colorado. I would highly recommend a drive along the Gunnison River
over on the west slope of the Colorado Rockies if you ever get a
chance. The Gunnison River starts near Taylor Park Reservoir high in
the mountains, which is also some of the coldest part of Colorado. The
Gunnison joins the Colorado River at Grand Junction, thus the name of
that western Colorado city. By the way, the coldest temperature ever
recorded in Colorado was 61 below zero on February 1, 1985.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly likes to sleep all
over our king-size bed. Most of the time she cuddles up to the
majority owner, but occasionally she will start out there and in the
middle of the night get up and walk all over the bed and settle
against my knees. Last night, about seven times between midnight and
4:00 a.m., she stood up, stretched her neck upward and literally body
slammed herself against my legs to try to get closer. Naturally, that
meant poor little me was awakened seven times. That is part of life
with that little girl and life goes on.

...Drier Air Arrives Later Today...

DRIER TONIGHT: A slow moving surface boundary (we sure don't like to
call them cold fronts in August) will move through North Alabama
today, and we will maintain a chance of showers and thunderstorms this
morning. By afternoon, drier air will moves in from the north, and the
bulk of the showers and storms should be south of I-20. Most of North
Alabama will become clear tonight.

TOMORROW AND FRIDAY: We will mention just an outside risk of a shower
for the Birmingham metro area, and the western counties of the state
should be totally rain-free as dry air takes over. The deeper moisture
will be along and south of a line from Anniston to Selma to Mobile,
and a chance of showers and storms will continue in this part of the
state.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: While moist air will return to all of Alabama this
weekend, an upper air high will begin to rebuild, setting up a typical
August weekend with hot muggy days, a partly sunny sky, and some risk
of scattered showers and storms, mainly during the afternoon and
evening hours. It now looks like highs over the weekend will be in the
89 to 92 degree range. This type of weather will most likely continue
into early next week.

HERE COMES ANA? Tropical depression two did not get any better
organized yesterday in the East Atlantic; it is fighting dry air to
the north, and it looks like development will be slow in coming days.
But, the National Hurricane Center is forecasting the depression to
grow into tropical storm Ana before the week is over. The official
track takes this system to a point just north of the Leeward Islands
Sunday with winds around 50 mph. The main American global model, the
GFS, brings Ana to the southern tip of Florida by the end of next
week, with a northward turn up the Atlantic coast. But, we caution you
this is only model output and it is way too early to determine if, and
when this will impact any landmass. We will be watching.

TUESDAY'S RAIN: Some rain totals from across Alabama yesterday
included 1.29" at Bessemer, 1.26" at Demopolis, .67" at Alabaster, .
66" at Jasper, .59" at Bluff Park, and .22" at Inverness. A few severe
thunderstorm warnings were issued during the afternoon, but we did not
receive any reports of wind damage.

You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Thunderboomers!...

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: Good old August thunderstorms developed fairly
early across Alabama today, especially over the north part of the
state. At one point, NWS in Huntsville issued a Flash Flood Warning
for parts of Cullman, Florence and Morgan Counties. The thunderstorms
were dumping very heavy rain and moving toward the east. Undoubtedly
some communities received well over an inch of rain in just a short
time late this morning and early this afternoon. The NWS/Storm
Prediction Center mentions a Slight Risk of a severe thunderstorm this
afternoon and evening for the north half of Alabama.

WHY ALL THE ACTION? Another one of those frontal boundaries that we
have been dealing with all summer. They do not produce enough cooling
to be known as a cold front or even a cool front, but they do trigger
lots of showers and thunderstorms wherever they are and a slight drop
in humidity after they push to the south.

This afternoon the latest frontal boundary seems to be homesteading
from the Texas Panhandle to Kansas City, Chicago, Buffalo and even
into New England. However, it should also slowly push south and by
Wednesday morning it should reach extreme North Alabama and by that
time creeping along or trying to sit down and rest. By late Wednesday,
it may be down to near Montgomery and that will be the end of the
line. By the weekend, it will either start slowly back northward or
become completely indistinguishable.

SO, WHAT DOES ALL THIS MUMBO-JUMBO MEAN: We look for a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms tonight, but diminishing after midnight. The
system will still be producing a good array of storms tomorrow. We
believe that most of the storms, but not all, will be south of I-20 as
slightly drier air sneaks in. We think there will only be a few storms
on Thursday and Friday. But guess what? The moist air will start
fighting its way back north over the weekend and scattered showers and
thunderstorms will still be in our weather picture.

TROPICAL: The Atlantic Basin is finally coming to life. A tropical
wave was near the Windward Islands moving west. Any development should
be slow. Another tropical wave was 550 miles east of the Lesser
Antilles. However, way out in the Eastern Atlantic, the second
Tropical Depression of the season was moving west, but not showing
much change in intensity. It was about 350 miles west of the Cape
Verde Islands and moving west at 13 with highest sustained winds of 30
mph. This one should gradually grow stronger and could become Ana—the
first named storm—in a day or two.

FROM THE GRAB BAG: How about that 91-degree high in New York yesterday
—their first time this year the old thermometer has been that high. It
was over 100 yesterday in places like Fresno, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San
Antonio, Waco and Tulsa. The hottest of all was 108 at Needles,
California. This morning it was a very chilly 33 at Pahaska, Wyoming
and 28 at Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska. Let us not mention that 98 below
zero at Vostok, Antarctica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly will celebrate her 7th
birthday later this month and I cannot decide what to give the little
girl. From day one, her favorite toy was a small blue spiked ball that
squeaks. She will chase that one all over the place favoring it all
over the others. She also likes a cloth soccer ball that one of our
readers gave her several years ago. She no longer has an interest in
toilet paper after completely covering our master bedroom one day
making it look like snow. That was only the first time out of two that
she got a spanking. Life goes on.

...Thunderboomers!...

===================================================================

RAIN CHANCES GOING UP: An approaching surface front will bring an
increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms to Alabama during
the next 36 hours, with potential for one inch of rain. Of course,
with the nature of summer thunderstorms the rain distribution won't be
very even, but some communities could see some beneficial amounts
through tomorrow.
While a few showers are not out of the question this morning, the best
chance of showers and storms today will come this afternoon and
tonight. While a few strong storms are possible, we don't expect too
many issues with severe weather with the best dynamics remaining to
the north of Alabama. We expect a high today close to 90 with most of
the sunshine coming during the morning hours.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The surface front will lose it's southward
push, and will become stationary somewhere over Central Alabama by
tomorrow night. We will still forecast scattered to numerous showers
and storms tomorrow, but drier air should begin to work into the
northern counties of the state by mid to late afternoon. The exact
location of the stalled front will determine our weather for Thursday
and Friday; for now we will assume the front will be somewhere near
I-20, so the most numerous showers and storms on these two days should
come over the southern half of the state. Communities like Huntsville,
Muscle Shoals, and Hamilton are looking dry on Thursday and Friday
with slightly lower humidity levels.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The stalled front will lose it's identity late
Friday, and relatively moist air will cover much of Alabama over the
weekend, and we will forecast a chance of scattered showers and
thunderstorms both Saturday and Sunday. There will be some decent
intervals of sunshine away from the showers, and highs will be
generally in the 87 to 90 degree range. This kind of weather should
linger into the the first half of next week.

TROPICS BECOMING ACTIVE: The National Hurricane Center is monitoring
two tropical waves in the Atlantic; one in the eastern Atlantic west
of the Cape Verde Islands, and another one in the eastern Caribbean.
The Caribbean wave will have a hard time developing due to harsh upper
air winds, but the East Atlantic system has some chance to become a
tropical depression in coming days as it moves to the west/northwest
over open water. Too early to determine if this will be a threat to
the U.S. mainland, or if it will recurve harmlessly into the open
Atlantic. And, in the Pacific, Felicia continues to weaken, and it is
expected to move over the Hawaiian Islands today as a weak tropical
storm, or a tropical depression.

EXTREMES: Hottest places in the nation yesterday were Needles,
California and Bullhead City, Arizona with 108 degrees. Cold spot in
the nation was Eagle, Alaska with 28 degrees.

...Scattered Thunderstorms...

MUGGY IS THE WORD: We watch the old dew point like a hawk in summer
because it is the key indicator of how much moisture is in the air--
much more useful than relative humidity. This afternoon the dew point
was in the 70s over all of the state including some mid 70s in some
sections. Meanwhile, the actual air temperature was 90 or above in
most locations. The heat index had reached 100 or higher in places
like Evergreen, Montgomery and in the upper 90s over the north. Dothan
was reporting 95 degrees with a heat index of 105 at 2:00. That
temperature still seems a bit high.

THUNDERSTORMS: Some scattered ones were beginning to develop mainly
across Central Alabama this afternoon. Looking to the NW we have a
weak frontal boundary pushing into Kansas ever so slowly. The morning
GFS model indicates that this boundary will finally reach Central
Alabama and stall by late Thursday or Friday morning. It should start
pushing back northward Saturday, so what does all this mean? That,
along with an upper-level disturbance, should increase our showers and
thunderstorms later Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. We look for a
good chance of showers and thunderstorms on Wednesday and some of
those could be locally strong. After that, we think there will be a
decrease in the number of storms Thursday and Friday. There could be a
very slight drop in humidity Thursday and Friday, but not enough to
write home about.

RAIN AMOUNTS: That is always a crucial question and point of interest
in Alabama in summer. The new NAM model presents us with just under 1
inch between now and Thursday morning. The GFS is almost as generous,
so we will go for that.

AT THE BEACH: Not the best of weather with a good chance of showers
and thunderstorms Tuesday and Wednesday and about a 40% chance
Thursday and Friday. High temperatures range between 88-90.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A tropical wave was near the Windward Islands
moving west at 10-15. Meanwhile, way out in the Atlantic not far off
the African coast, showers and storms were diminishing in that
disturbance. However, conditions still appear favourable for eventual
development. It may become a tropical depression during the next
couple of days. There is a chance it could become the first named
storm (Ana) in the next 48 hours.

TYPHOON MORAKOT: A real human tragedy. It caused a huge mudslide that
buried about 600 people in a mountain village in South Taiwan. Many
are still missing. Most of the village was buried. It then went into
Eastern China where they evacuated about one million people.

SIGNS OF AUTUMN: Not really, but the NWS in Fairbanks advises there
could be frost in the outlying area tonight. It was 29 this morning in
Eagle, Alaska. Hottest in the USA Sunday was 112 in Death Valley.
Imagine this: 101 below zero today at Vostok, Antarctica. The wind
chill may be as low as 140 below the next couple of days and they are
expecting an actual temperature of 130 below Sunday night.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: If you happen to see Little Miss Molly
and she is griping about not having enough ballgames, please call her
a liar. Even my tongue was hanging out over the weekend from vicious
games. She finally crawled out of bed early this morning and the first
thing she wanted to do, even before going to the bathroom, was to play
ball. She never, ever gets enough. She is almost 7 years old and has
not slowed down one bit. Yesterday three neighborhood kids came in to
play with Sir Alex. She insisted on greeting everyone individually and
leaping high off the floor. Life goes on.

...Dog Days of Summer Waning...

The Dog Days of Summer have an interesting background. The ancient
Greeks watched for the arrival of the star Sirius, part of the
constellation Canus Major. It rose in the morning with the sun. They
believed it brought the raging heat of summer along with it.
Officially, the Dog Days run from July 3rd to August 11th. So the
Dog Days will draw to a close after tomorrow…

HOT WEATHER TO WANE JUST A BIT: Even as the astronomical Dog Days
wane, so will our recent hot weather wane just a bit. The combination
of a deep flow of tropical moisture and an upper level trough making a
dent in the heat ridge over the Southeast will conspire to produce
higher than average shower and storm chances during this week's
afternoon and evening hours. It will still be seasonally hot, with
highs around 90 and lows in the 70s. Of course it will be sticky as
well. It's summer in Alabama.

DROUGHT WATCH: Those daily scattered thundershowers will be welcome
even though many places have rainfall surpluses. Really only
Randolph, Lee and Chambers Counties in East Alabama are abnormally dry
now according to the Drought Monitor. There are some pockets of short
term dryness where lawns could use a drink, especially across Shelby
and southern St. Clair Counties.

TROPICS: Felicia is the headliner right now. The hurricane has been
slowly weakening and is now a tropical storm. It will pass through
the Hawaiian Islands today, likely as a weak tropical storm, perhaps
adepression. It will only be the 10th depression or higher tropical
cyclone to hit the islands since 1950. A strong tropical wave in the
eastern Atlantic could become a tropical depression shortly. I think
it will move northwestward into a weakness in the subtropical ridge.
The GFS depicts one more depression this week in the Atlantic that
will stay on a more southerly track over the next two weeks and make
it into the Caribbean. Even though NOAA and Colorado State have
reduced their seasonal forecasts, we still have a dangerous hurricane
season to get through.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 185: Get ready to be enthralled tonight with
the fascinating story of Muggah's Hotel and the Last Island Resort on
the Louisiana coast. It disappeared beneath the rising sea of a
category four hurricane's storm surge on August 10, 1856. Author Abby
Sallenger will relate the story and tell us how he thinks it foretells
of what might increasingly happen ins a warming world. The show will
be available late tonight on iTunes or WeatherBrains.com. Get the
latest daily news and notes about the podcast that's all about weather
by going to www.Twitter.com/WeatherBrains. Learn about future guests
and get special show information.

ON THIS DATE IN 1980: Hurricane Allen made landfall on the Texas
coast just north of Brownsville with winds near 115 mph. Gusts to 140
mph were reported at Port Mansfield where the storm surge was 12
feet. Ten to twenty inches of rain fell across South Texas, which
ended the tremendous drought of 1980. Twenty nine tornadoes spun from
the storms winding bands. Two deaths and $300 million of damage were
reported in Texas. Total damage $700 million. Are you on Twitter?

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where
it's safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even
small projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours
prior to digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Scattered Storms This Afternoon...

An unusual weather pattern will be setting up over Alabama in the
coming week, and it means an interesting forecast over the next seven
days. Let's look at that as well as the tropics…

SHOWERS AND STORMS: A warm and humid airmass is over Alabama this
afternoon. An upper disturbance was riding up the west side of the
big heat ridge that is over the Southeast. This disturbance was
triggering showers over the southwestern quarter of the state from
south of Tuscaloosa to Evergreen. Additional showers and storms will
form across the rest of Central Alabama this afternoon, much like
yesterday, but perhaps a little more numerous. If you get under one,
you could pick up ¾ of an inch of rain or more, along with gusty winds
and deadly lightning. Shower and storm chances will be increasing as
we head into the new work week as the deep moisture continues over the
area and an anomalous upper trough swings our way. It could be a
rather wet and stomry week, with most spots in Central Alabama picking
up 1 to 1.5 inches of rain over the next five days.

BEACH FORECAST: Unfortunately, higher than average rain chances
along the Gulf Coast. But still you can expect 5-6 hours of sun each
day with highs around d90 and lows in the lower 70s.

IN THE TROPICS: Look for a depression to form by midweek in the
eastern Atlantic, followed by another one fairly soon thereafter. The
first system may curve out into the Atlantic, but it will have to be
watched.

SEASONAL FORECAST: Even though NOAA and Colorado State have lowered
their hurricane season forecasts, it looks like the next three weeks
could get the season started with a bang with the potential for a
Caribbean storm coming up.

FELICIA: Tropical storm Felicia will cross the islands on Monday.
It may weaken to a depression before it arrives, but it will bring
heavy rain and gusty winds to Paradise.

TORNADO FATALITIES: We continue our good run in the tornado fatality
department with only 21 tornado deaths in the U.S. this year. If we
could hold at 21, it would be the second fewest tornado deaths since
modern tornado records began in 1950.

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: Alabama continued in the midst of a major heat
wave and drought. The 103F at the Birmingham Airport was the hottest
in the Magic City since August 19, 1999. It was the third straight day
of 100 degree readings at Birmingham. It was 103F at Tuscaloosa (a
record) and 105F at Pinson. Montgomery topped out at 104F. A large
part of the northern half of the state continued in an exceptional
drought, the highest category on the drought scale. If you enjoy

Our Hope In Difficult Times

We all struggle. A family in turmoil, job loss, health issues, a mess we
helped create. We live in difficult times.

Facing tough times is different with Jesus Christ than without Him.
Does that sound too "churchy?" Too easy? Don't be dismayed or misled.

Our Hope In Difficult Times is a new sermon series beginning on Sunday,
August 16 at Hunter Street Baptist Church. There is hope. You don't
have to struggle alone.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street, 2600 John Hawkins Parkway in
Hoover. Visit http://www.hunterstreet.org or call 205.985.7295.
