...More Storms Ahead...

National Weather Service Survey teams from Huntsville and Birmingham
are out and about on this Saturday, investigating damage in areas that
experienced severe weather on Friday. BMX teams are in Montgomery,
Elmore, Tallapoosa, Lee and Russell Counties.

EASTER FORECAST: Clouds greeted the day over the northern half of
Alabama this morning thanks to the upper low that brought yesterday's
stormy weather. The clouds will gradually erode this afternoon,
giving most areas sunshine. South of Shelby County, sunshine has
prevailed all morning. This will lead to a wide range of temperatures
this afternoon. Highs will range from the middle 60s to middle 70s.
Tonight will feature clear and cool conditions with lows in the 40s.
Easter sunrise services will be crisp and clear. With lots of
sunshine Sunday morning, temperatures will quickly rise into the 70s.

SUNDAY NIGHT STORMS: Clouds will begin to increase Sunday afternoon,
ahead of our next storm system, another strong upper level system that
will be swinging our way. The upper system will induce the
development of a surface low over the Arklatex by tomorrow afternoon.
As it does, our winds will increase and it will be very breezy by
sunset. A stray thunderstorm might may it into Alabama late tomorrow
afternoon, and showers and storms will be increasing from the west
during the evening hours. Storms should intensify through the
overnight hours as upper levels winds increase and we could see some
severe weather overnight, although the best chances will be over
Southwest Alabama.

MONDAY SEVERE WEATHER: After the Sunday night thunderstorm complex
moves through, we will see clearing skies Monday morning. That means
that instability levels will be on the rise again. This will lead to
a threat of severe weather again Monday afternoon and evening ahead of
a cold front. Monday will be a day when we will have to monitor the
threat of severe weather.

REST OF THE WEEK: We had thought that there would be some rain and
thunderstorms by late in the week, but the development of a blocking
pattern over the U.S. Skies should turn sunny on Tuesday and
Wednesday looks nice. There could be a few showers on Thursday, but
it looks like our next storm system will come in late on Saturday into
Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1815: The Tambora volcano on the island of Sumbawa
in Indonesia, which had begun erupting on the 5th, erupted violently
on the 11th and 12th. Only 26 of the 12,000 inhabitants on the island
survived. Ash from the volcano caused day to be as dark as night in
Java. It was one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions of all
time. It was more powerful that Krakatau and 200 times more powerful
than Mount St. Helens. The ash would encircle the globe, reducing
sunlight by as much as 15-20% worldwide. Global temperatures dropped
as much as 7 degrees C, resulting in the Year Without a Summer in
Europe and parts of North America in 1816. The Tambora eruption came
during a decade remarkable volcanic activity. It was one of three
major eruptions between 1812 and 1817 including Soufriere on the
island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean in 1812 and Mayon in the
Philippines in 1814.

...Too Many Thunderstorms...

A PDS TORNADO WATCH: That PDS stands for Particularly Dangerous
Situation. In the course of an entire year, only a handful of tornado
watches will carry that designation.

Unfortunately, the Storm Prediction Center posted one of those watches
this afternoon for about the northern third of Alabama, NW Georgia,
Middle Tennessee and parts of East Tennessee. It is in effect until
early this evening and it could be extended east and southward later
this afternoon.

This latest storm system has been a troublesome one. Last evening a
tornado heavily damaged the town of Mena, Arkansas. Mena is located in
extreme West Arkansas not far from the Oklahoma border. Much of the
town was heavily damaged and parts of the downtown area destroyed.
Early reports indicated at least three fatalities and a number of
injuries. Mena is a small town.

There were numerous reports of severe weather yesterday afternoon and
overnight in Oklahoma, Arkansas and parts of Louisiana. At one place
in Oklahoma, hail was described as the size of apples.

BACK HOME IN ALABAMA: We will certainly keep a close watch on this
thunderstorm situation all afternoon and until late tonight. The
atmosphere is very unstable and a lot of the other weather indicators
favor very large hail and even the possibility of a long-track
damaging tornado. In NW and West Alabama, the thunderstorms will
diminish or end early this evening and over on the east side of the
state, later tonight.

THE EASTER WEEKEND: Much of Saturday will have sunshine after the
clouds get out of the way during the morning. A bit cooler with highs
in the 60s. Easter Sunday should feature mostly nice weather with lots
of morning sunshine. Some clouds may appear in the afternoon leading
to some more showers and possibly a thunderstorm late Sunday night.
That will be the forerunner to another round of showers and
thunderstorms on Monday. Again, it looks like this could be another
severe weather threat. Finally, sunshine returns on Tuesday with
pleasant temperatures in the 70s.

Remember, we are still in our prime severe thunderstorm and tornado
season. Several years recently saw the secondary autumn season in
November and early December turn out to be the most active. However, a
48-year study showed that tornadoes reported in Alabama were much more
numerous in March and April.

ELSEWHERE: Still blistering hot along the Rio Grande in Texas where
Laredo had a high of 106 yesterday. Coldest this morning in the lower
48 was 12 at Stonington, Michigan. Coldest in Alaska was 10 below at
Point Lay. Whittier, Alaska had 9 inches of snow on the ground this
morning—down about 3 inches since yesterday. One of the coldest
temperatures in the whole wide world today was 84 below at Vostok,
Antarctica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Not looking forward to this afternoon
and evening with all the thunder boomers and how Little Miss Molly is
frightened by them, but I sure do look forward to making it up to her
tomorrow with lots of playing. Life goes on.

...Severe Storms Possible Today...

WATCHING THE SKY: The very active spring weather pattern across
Alabama will push another dynamic storm system across Alabama today,
and a number of parameters are coming together for the potential for
severe thunderstorms. The primary window for severe storms will come
from about 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., and all modes of severe weather
will be possible, including large hail, damaging winds, and a few
isolated tornadoes. This will be yet another day when you want to be a
in a position to hear severe weather watches and warnings as they most
likely we will be needed today. Rainfall amounts will be generally one-
half inch for most places. The storms will end tonight as cooler air
blows in on brisk northwest winds.

OUR EASTER WEEKEND: After some lingering clouds tomorrow morning, we
are forecasting a clearing sky tomorrow, with sunshine by afternoon.
Temperatures will be a bit cooler, with a high in the mid to upper
60s. Sunday also looks dry with ample sunshine and a high in the low
to mid 70s.

MORE STORMS: Yet another strong storm system will roll into Alabama
early next week. A few storms could arrive late Sunday night, after
midnight, but it looks like the best chance of rain will come during
the day Monday. Based on projected instability and shear values,
strong to severe storms will be possible on Monday, along with the
risk of some heavy rain at at times. We will be more specific with
this threat with our forecasts over the weekend. Drier air follows the
rain on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.

AT THE BEACH: Just a few scattered storms today and tonight, followed
by dry weather tomorrow and Sunday. Highs along the immediate coast
will be close to 70 degrees. Next week, showers and storms are likely
Monday, with mostly sunny weather on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then, long
range model data hints at a chance of showers and storms at the end of
next week on Thursday and Friday. The sea water temperature at the
Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was a cool 64 degrees.

LAST NIGHT'S STORMS: There were 12 tornadoes reported late yesterday
and last night across parts of Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri; a
tornado was responsible for damage in the community of Mena, Arkansas,
where homes were damaged, trees blown down, and power outages
occurred. There were over 60 reports of large hail in the same general
area.

SPECIAL ABC 33/40 NOAA WEATHER RADIO OFFER: You can purchase the
WR-100 Midland NOAA Weather Radio, the best selling model in the
nation, at any Publix or Handy TV location in this part of Alabama for
only $29.95. These receivers have the new digital technology that
