...Warm Sunday...

GOOD MORNING! Temperatures soared across Alabama on Saturday. Every
official reporting station in Central Alabama reached 80 degrees, including
83 at the Birmingham Airport and Pinson. It was 84 in Tuscaloosa, which
tied them with Dothan for the state's hot spot. Temperatures will be
generally as warm again today across the area. Skies should become partly
cloudy later this morning.

SEVERE WEATHER TODAY: A big trough of low pressure continues across the
middle part of the country today. Low pressure at the surface is moving
from Colorado into western Kansas this morning. Warm, moist air covers a
large area out ahead of the cyclone. A strong upper level jetstream will
move across the warm sector this afternoon and tonight, creating the
necessary large scale lift to allow for widespread thunderstorm development.
An outbreak of severe weather is likely across areas from northeastern Texas
to Central Illinois and Indiana.

OUR WEATHER: There is a slight chance of a shower or isolated storm today
across the area, but the chance is very small. Skies will become cloudy
overnight, with lows dropping to near 60 degrees. Our Midwestern storm
system will track northeastward through Monday, pushing a cold front our
way.

With an unstable airmass in place, showers and storms will be on the
increase during the day. Some of the storms ahead of the main line could
become severe during the afternoon. Then a line of strong to severe storms
will move through the state during the late afternoon.

Skies will clear on Tuesday as cooler air spreads into the state. Wednesday
should be a nice day, with lots of sunshine and near normal temperatures in
the mid 60s. Another cold front will approach on Thursday, bringing us
another chance of showers and thunderstorms.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: A violent hail storm struck Kathmandu, Nepal, during
a soccer game at the national stadium. About 80 fans, seeking shelter from
the storm, were trampled to death as the stadium doors were locked.

GOOD AFTERNOON: Sunshine was slowly breaking out across Alabama at late
morning. A warm, moist airmass covers the state. Temperatures are in the
middle and upper 70s, and dewpoints are in the lower and middle 60s.

THIS AFTERNOON: Instability levels will slowly rise through the afternoon,
with CAPE values peaking at about 600-800 j/kg. Lifted indices will be
about -2. There is a bit of a cap on the atmosphere, but expected max
temperatures will be able to break that in some places. All that means that
showers and storms should form across the area later this afternoon. With a
decent amount of shear in place, storms with organized updrafts could occur,
and those could be quite strong. We can't rule out a severe storm or two,
but widespread severe weather is not expected. Activity should diminish
this evening, even though more showers could occur overnight as disturbances
pass overhead in the southwesterly upper flow.

SUNDAY: Sunday should feature a little more sunshine, slightly warmer
temperatures and a tad more instability. This means more showers and storms
forming during the afternoon hours, and some of them could again be strong.
In fact, the Storm Prediction Center thinks that severe storms are possible
tomorrow over about the northwestern quarter of the state, generally west of
I-59.

MONDAY: A cold front will approach the state Monday. This will set the
stage for another round of strong to severe showers and thunderstorms.
Monday afternoon, we will deal with the potential of supercell storms ahead
of the main line of storms. That main line will sweep through the state
during the evening hours.

TUESDAY AND BEYOND: Much cooler air will flow into Alabama behind the
front. Skies will clear fairly quickly on Tuesday and temperatures will
drop close to freezing by Wednesday morning. Wednesday will be a nice day,
but showers and storms will return Thursday.

BACK IN 1963 ON THIS DATE: A series of tornadoes injured thirty five
Alabamians. The outbreak, which lasted from early afternoon through
mid-evening started around 2 p.m. with an F2 twister that skipped across
Pickens and Fayette County. The strongest tornado of the day cut a 25 mile
path across Cullman County about the same time. The F4 tornado killed 2
people, one at Good Hope and the other at Berlin. Additional tornadoes
touched down in Franklin, Limestone and Madison Counties by late afternoon.
Marion and Winston Counties felt the storms' wrath during the evening hours.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: The town of Santa Paula, California returned to the
local weather forecast map of the Los Angeles Times after a ninety two day
absence. Times' officials said that they had made the move because of a
lack of reliable weather information from the town. The move caused an
uproar among civic officials and residents who felt slighted by the move. A
tongue in cheek protest was held at the Times' offices. A Times' writer
began publishing the forecast for Santa Paula in his weekly columns. The
dot for Santa Paula returned to the map on March 11th when Times' officials
found a dependable source for weather information from the town.

AN EXTENDED WARM SPELL: Until next Tuesday, that is, when another
cold front will bring in a fresh supply of much cooler air. By next
Wednesday morning we could have low temperatures in the middle 30s.

Let's not get the wagon before the horse, however. Look for warm
daytime temperatures through Monday with highs well into the 70s and some
places will touch 80 Sunday afternoon.

HOW ABOUT RAIN? Forecast a bit indefinite on the chances of showers
and thunderstorms over the next couple of days. The bad weather that moved
across the state last night left an old boundary across SE Alabama and there
were some showers and storms down that way today. The boundary is lifting
back northward along with some rich moisture. Dew points as high as 65 and
68 were noted along the Gulf Coast today.

So, what does all of this jumbo-mumbo mean for Central Alabama? We
could see a shower or thunderstorm sneak into the area overnight. We expect
scattered showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, few if any on Sunday. Our
next main weather event will be late Monday and Monday night as a cold front
approaches from the NW. We could have another line of showers and
thunderstorms moving through late in the day Monday, but especially Monday
night. We could have another weather risk with those. Look for a lot cooler
weather on Tuesday.

Numerous high wind reports over North and West Alabama late
yesterday and last night. Considerable wind damage in several NW Alabama
counties. Storm survey teams from the NWS were in that area today.
Fortunately, if we can use that word, we do not think there were any
distinct tornadoes. Final word on that will be after the surveys.

PROWLING FAR AND WIDE: Good old Phoenix. They are forecasting 70%
chance of rain Saturday and Saturday night, so the 143 days in a row without
a drop of rain may be their last one. Up in the Arizona high country,
Flagstaff is expecting a winter storm with as much as 8 to 14 inches of snow
through Saturday and some higher terrain points may get over 18 inches. They
have still received only 2.6 inches this winter...293 high wind reports in
yesterday's severe weather event and 47 hail reports. May have been several
tornadoes, but confirmation of those will await storm surveys...15 below
zero at Stanley, Idaho was the coldest in the lower 48. It was 43 below at
Wainwright, Alaska...the wind chill was an amazing 68 below at Nuiqsut,
Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: After ignoring my pal, Little Miss
Molly, for over 24 hours because of a very busy work schedule, the little
girl would not take no for an answer when she crawled out of bed this
morning. After 45 seconds of stretching and moaning and groaning, she was
definitely ready for a ballgame even before she went outside to her great
outdoor bathroom. Boy, was she pumped! I sensed that she thought she was
playing in the World Series. Off we went on the walk and we had a record
number of birds out singing. They must have hidden yesterday in all that
wind and were making up for lost time this morning. A mockingbird was the
lead singer, but numerous other birds chimed in and some old crows sang
bass. It sounded like Saturday night at the Grand Old Opry. We loved it.
Life goes on, storms or calm, sleep or no sleep.

...Drier Day For Alabama...

After a round of severe thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and last night,
the weather in Alabama today will be much more tranquil, with a partly sunny
sky and temperatures in the mid to upper 70s this afternoon.

Over the weekend, a few scattered showers or storms could show up tomorrow
and Sunday, but on the positive side there will be some good intervals of
sunshine, and temperatures will rise into the upper 70s both days. Some
spots might even reach the 80 degree mark.

MORE SEVERE WEATHER? Another dynamic storm system will move out of the
southwest part of the nation late this weekend, and could bring the risk of
another round of strong to severe storms to Alabama Monday night.

While the wind fields should not be as strong as yesterday's system, the air
should be more unstable as the Gulf of Mexico should be "open" over the
weekend, allowing for a much higher degree of low level moisture. For now it
looks like the best chance of strong storms will come from about 6:00 p.m.
Monday through 3:00 a.m. Tuesday of next week.

A quick shot of cooler air will invade the state Tuesday, but we should warm
up nicely over the latter half of the week.

BAMA STORMS: One injury was reported in both Lynn and Eldridge yesterday due
to falling trees. The elementary school in Vernon had part of the roof blown
off; there were other reports of major structural damage across other parts
of Lamar County, as well as Marion, Fayette, Walker, and Winston Counties.
Dozens, and perhaps hundreds of trees were blown down as well. At the ABC
33/40 Weather Center in Riverchase, the storms dropped 1.32" of rain.
