...Gorgeous Day Ahead...

If you like blue skies and temperatures in the lower and middle 70s,
today is the day for you. But changes are on the way, in the form of
a strong cold front and the coolest air of the season so far.

FROST IN OUR FUTURE? The leading edge of the colder air will reach
Alabama late tonight. The cold front will sweep across the state,
heralded by increasing winds, but little in the way of even clouds.
Monday will be a breezy and raw day with highs struggling to reach 60
degrees along with a chilly northwest wind. Those winds will die down
Monday night, and with clear skies and calm conditions, temperatures
will sink to the lowest readings of the season so far. Lows will
range between 31-37 across Central Alabama. Frost will be widespread,
and a brief freeze will be felt in the normally colder spots.
Protection should be provided for any vulnerable vegetation. Tuesday
will be sunny, but chilly, with highs remaining in the 50s. Look for
more frost/freezing conditions Tuesday night as the high will be at
its closest proximity to Alabama. Wednesday will see highs return to
the 60s and we should see 70s by Thursday and Friday as winds shift to
the southeast and temperatures moderate.

SNEAK PEEK NEXT WEEKEND: Trick or treaters should see fine conditions
Friday night, with temperatures falling through the 60s during the
evening hours. By next Saturday morning, high pressure will centered
over the Smoky Mountains and Alabama will find itself in some fine
autumn conditions. Weekend highs should be in the low 70s. Overnight
lows will be in the in the lower 50s. The next rain chances may not
come until the weekend of the 8th.

LAKE EFFECT SNOW MACHINE: A cold northwesterly flow of Canadian air
over the Great Lakes is going to set up the first major lake effect
snow event of the season over the next few days. Snows will develop
this morning in the lee of Lake Superior across northern Wisconsin and
Upper Michigan. Three to six inches will be likely with some eight
inch amounts possible. The machine will turn its sights on Lake
Michigan by Monday, bringing heavy snows to parts of northern
Michigan. By late Monday into Tuesday, the familiar spots off Lake
Erie in New York and Pennsylvania will start to feel the effects.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Hurricane Mitch tied Hurricane Camille (1969)
as the fourth strongest Atlantic Hurricane of record when Air Force
Reconnaissance found a central pressure of 905 millibars, making it a
Category 5 hurricane. Of course, that all changed with the 2005
season, as Wilma, Rita and Katrina all posted lower central
pressures. Mitch would stay a Category 5 forty two hours. Allen
holds the distinction for longest time at Category 5…72 hours. The
central pressure of 905 millibars was also the lowest pressure ever
observed in an October hurricane in the Atlantic basin to that time.
Oh, wait. Wilma was an October hurricane. The maximum sustained winds
in Mitch reached 180 mph. Mitch would go on to kill over 11,000
people in Honduras and Nicaragua, making it the deadliest Atlantic
hurricane since 1780.

...Dry Weather For Foreseeable Future...

Dense fog advisories were in effect early this morning across much of
the state this morning as the low level airmass was saturated across
the region. The fog layer was very shallow, however, and the sun
broke through quickly. Skies will be partly cloudy this afternoon,
with highs around 70 degrees. Tonight will feature clear, calm and
cool conditions with lows in the lower 40s.
FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Tomorrow promises to be a gorgeous day, with lots of
sunshine and blue skies. Temperatures will start out in the lower 40s
and warm into the lower to middle 70s by afternoon. Sunday night will
feature clear skies and cool temperatures again ahead of a southward
moving cold front.

THE WEEK AHEAD: That cold front will have nothing to work with in the
way of moisture, so all it might be able to scare up is some scattered
clouds. The front will pass through early Monday morning. Behind it,
it will be windy and cooler. The winds should relax by Monday night.
As the winds diminish and the mass of the colder air settles in Monday
night, temperatures will fall into the middle 30s in most spots. Some
of the normally colder locations may see a light freeze. Most areas
will experience frost. Expect beautiful conditions Tuesday.
Wednesday morning will be another cold one with the high close by, and
we could see a repeat performance of frost and potential freezing
conditions. Temperatures will begin to moderate by late in the week
and it will remain dry.

NOTES FROM ALL OVER: Flooding was reported in downtown Charleston,
S.C. overnight. 6.57 inches of rain fell at North Charleston, S.C.
yesterday, which was a record for the date and for October. 5.23
inches fell at the Charleston Airport, also a record. The 3.61
inches that fell at Savannah was also a record. A storm spotter
reported seeing a tornado near Tarboro, Georgia Friday afternoon,
reporting falling debris that damaged the windshield of his car. The
tropics are quiet. The GFS keeps some nervous weather over the
western Caribbean during the next two weeks, but the chances of
tropical cyclone development look prohibitive for now. Record chill
this morning included 39F at Victoria, TX; Winter storm watches are
in effect for Upper Michigan where the blast of cold air will cross
relatively warm lake Superior on Sunday, dumping some 4 to 8 inch lake
effect snows.

WORLD SERIES WEATHER: Weather threatens the third game of the World
Series tonight at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Low pressure
moving up the east coast is spreading rain, storms and winds ahead of
it. The low is supposed to move through late this afternoon and push
a cold front through the Philly area around first pitch time.
Hopefully the rain will move out before game time. If the front is
delayed, strong southerly winds will make the bandbox of a ballpark a
launching pad. Southerly winds at 15 mph would be blowing straight
out to center field. But once the front arrives, winds will shift to
the west, blowing from left field to right field. Fine weather will
prevail for games four and five, and then it's back to the Trop in St.
Pete for games 6 and 7, if necessary. Weather is not a factor in the
dome, unless you count getting wet walking to and from your car.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Pacific Hurricane Kenna made landfall on the
west coast of Mexico near the fishing village of San Blas. Kenna
weakened slightly after reaching peak intensity of 165 mph as a
Category 5 storm. Packing winds of 140 mph at landfall, Kenna dealt a
glancing blow to the resort area of Puerto Vallarta. Huge waves
pounded the shore, damaged buildings and homes and brought down trees
and power lines. One person was killed and 54 injured. Kenna was the
third strongest hurricane to strike the Mexican coast since 1949.

...Fine Fall Saturday...

A dry and mild weekend is in store for us in
Central Alabama thanks to a big trough that is setting up over the
eastern United States. A reinforcing shot of cold air will arrive
early Monday. Temperatures will moderate later in the week.

YOUR FORECAST: A little fog to greet the day on this
October Saturday morning. The lower atmosphere is saturated and with
clearing skies and light winds providing perfect radiation conditions,
shallow dense fog has formed. It will burn off early this morning.
Cold air aloft will allow for a nice field of stratocumulus today,
giving us partly cloudy skies. Afternoon highs will warm to near 70
degrees. Tonight will be a beautiful, crisp fall night with lows in
the lower 40s. Sunday looks like a great day, with near total
sunshine and highs in the lower to middle 70s. A reinforcing shot of
colder air will arrive early on Monday as a strong disturbance dives
through the trough, digging it deeper into the Southeast. Recent
model runs have shown this more as a glancing blow that earlier
depicted, and the airmass may not be as cold. There will be a chance
of frost Tuesday morning when lows will be in the 30s. Lows will still
be chilly Wednesday morning, mainly upper 30s. Temperatures will
moderate by the end of the week, with 70s common by Thursday and Friday.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is quiet. The only place
that even could support tropical cyclone development over the next two
weeks is the western Caribbean. A broad band of high wind shear
surrounds the U.S. coastline which should protect everywhere but South
Florida from any threats over the next two weeks, and there is no sign
of that even.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Birmingham's game of the year is at
Legion Field this afternoon. It's the iconic Magic City Classic
between Alabama State and Alabama A&M. The game kicks off at 2:30
p.m. In addition, The Citadel is in Birmingham for the Samford
Homecoming game with a 2:00 p.m. kick off. For both games, it will be
sunny with about 68 at kick off and 58 by the final whistle. The Magic
City Classic will be shown on tape delay on ESPNU. In Knoxville,
Alabama will meet Tennessee for a 6:45 kick off in Knoxville. The
game is on ESPN. Fair dry weather with a light wind and in the 50s at
kick off and 40s by the end of the game.

ON THIS DATE IN 1910: The fifth tropical cyclone of the
1910 hurricane season was a strong one. It formed in the bowels of
the southwestern Caribbean, as many October storms do. It moved
northward, becoming a major hurricane as it crossed western Cuba on
the 13th of October. It then slowed and described a big loop north of
Cuba, growing into a category four monster over the southern Gulf of
Mexico. On the 16th, it turned northeast and headed toward a landfall
near Ft. Myers, Florida. Fortunately, it weakened to a category two
hurricane with top winds of 110 mph at landfall. Strong northeast
winds circulating around the hurricane pushed the water out of Tampa
Bay, leaving the lowest water levels ever observed in the bay, nine
feet below normal. A total of forty ships were grounded. Tampa is
regarded to be one of the most vulnerable coastal cities to a
hurricane, with very narrow escape routes and a potential for a very
high storm surge. The 1906 hurricane was south of Tampa. A direct
hit could be a big problem.

...Rain Mostly Over...

A SUNNY WEEKEND: Rain overnight and today brought some beneficial
amounts to parts of the state, but some areas did not get enough to
throw a party over. Now we are headed for a dry period that will last
well into next week.
Here is a sampling of the rain amounts across Alabama. The heavier
amounts, by far, were down south.

2.99 Fairhope
2.93 Loxley
2.94 Daphne
3.78 near Orange Beach
3.10 south of Opelika
0.96 Anniston Airport
0.26 Birmingham Airport
1.06 Montgomery
0.27 Tuscaloosa

By midafternoon, most of the rain had moved out of the state, but
there was some scattered light rain still over NE Alabama. Clouds will
gradually break up tonight, but as they do, with all the low-level
moisture, look for dense fog to develop in some areas especially where
there has been some good rain. The fog will break up tomorrow morning
leaving mostly sunshine. This afternoon, most of Mississippi was
already clear and the weak cool front had pushed into NW Alabama.

We are in for our lowest temperatures so far this season early next
week. A very large mass of colder air will start forcing its way south
from Alaska and Canada over the weekend. The front is expected to come
through Central Alabama late Sunday night or early Monday morning. It
will be a large high-pressure system covering many states. We think
our lowest temperature will be in the mid 30s Tuesday morning. This
may easily be a scattered frost situation for the colder valleys of
North and NE Alabama. Highs on Monday, even with sunshine, may not get
out of the upper 50s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Most of the high school games tonight will be
played without rain. Some clouds may linger. The fields, of course,
will be mostly wet and temperatures will be in the 50s throughout the
game. Saturday the Citadel is in Birmingham for the Samford Homecoming
game with a 2:00 p.m. kick off. 30 minutes later at 2:30, the Magic
City Classic will kick off at Legion Field between Alabama State and
Alabama A&M. That game is on tape delay at 9:30 p.m. on ESPNU. For
both games, it will be sunny with about 68 at kick off and 58 by the
final whistle. In Knoxville, Alabama will meet Tennessee for a 6:45
kick off on ESPN. Fair dry weather with a light wind and in the 50s at
kick off and 40s by the end of the game.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: On ABC 33/40 tonight at 7:00 p.m., tune in for
Southern Skies 2008. This is the annual fall severe weather special.
You will see some great Alabama weather stories and learn more about
getting your family ready for our fall tornado season. Sometimes it is
more active than the spring season. The program lasts one hour and is
loaded with good information.

...A Chilly, Wet Day...

COLD (FOR OCTOBER) AND WET: Wet weather headlines our forecast today
as a dynamic upper air system passes through. We are projecting rain
amounts of one inch, with some heavier amounts likely south of
Montgomery. This is going to be a rather chilly rain for mid-October;
we should hover in the 50s all day with a cool breeze out of the
east/northeast. The rain will taper off this afternoon from west to
east, and there is a decent chance the rain will be over by the time
high school football games begin tonight (but the fields will be very
sloppy from the all-day rain).

BRIGHTER AND WARMER OVER THE WEEKEND: The sky should clear after
midnight tonight, and the weekend looks very nice with a sunny sky
both tomorrow and Sunday. The high tomorrow should be in the mid 60s,
with low 70s likely by Sunday. Mornings will be cool with readings
well down in the 40s.

COLD AIR BLAST NEXT WEEK: A deep upper trough will deliver the coldest
air so far this season early next week. Monday will be a rather raw
day with a brisk north wind, a few sprinkles, and a mix of sun and
clouds. There is a good chance we won't reach 60 Monday, and by
daybreak Tuesday we should be down in the 30s. The greatest risk of
frost, however, will come early Wednesday when the sky will be clear,
and the wind light. Colder valleys have a decent chance of reaching
the 20s Wednesday morning. A warming trend will begin Wednesday
afternoon, continuing through the rest of the week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Most of the rain should be over by the time the high
school football games begin tonight, but clouds will linger.
Temperatures will hover in the 50 to 54 degree range during the games.
Tomorrow, Alabama State plays Alabama A&M in the Magic City Classic at
Legion Field with a 2:30 p.m. kick off and tape delay on ESPNU.
Meanwhile, the Citadel will be at Samford for their homecoming at 2:00
p.m. For both games, it should be mostly sunny with about 66 at kick
off and in the 50s by the 4th quarter. NW winds 7-14 mph for both
games. Finally, Alabama is at Knoxville for an evening game Saturday.
The kick off is at 6:45 p.m. (CDT) on ESPN. It will be clear and cool
with 55 degrees at kick off and dropping into the 40s.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: Join us on ABC 33/40 tonight at 7:00 for "Southern
Skies of 2008″…. this is our annual fall severe weather special. You
will see some great Alabama weather stories, and learn more about
getting your family ready for our fall tornado season, which begins in
only 8 days!

...A Rainy Friday...

AFTER THE RAIN, A COOL DRY WEEKEND: We are in for a good general rain
starting tonight and continuing well into Friday. This is our latest
thinking. The rain will start off lightly tonight and gradually
increase later tonight. It looks like the most extensive rain will be
toward midnight through Friday morning and into Friday afternoon.
There is a chance that most of the rain will be out of this area by
early Friday evening. For the high school football games, there is a
decent chance of playing the game with no rain, although the fields
will be wet.

The intense low-pressure area that is part of our weather was over
Eastern Kansas this afternoon and a cold front extended down to West
Mississippi. The front, however, is running up against a wedge that is
forcing its way westward into Alabama. By daybreak tomorrow, the front
will be slow moving across West Alabama, but eventually reaching the
east side of the state late Friday. Much drier air will be our story
for Saturday and Sunday. There will be another big push of cooler air
moving out of the Central USA and sending a cold front fairly rapidly
across Alabama by Monday morning. It appears that by Tuesday morning
we could have some of the lowest temperatures so far this season with
temperatures in the mid 30s to start the day and maybe closer to 32 in
the valleys of NE Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn is in Morgantown to play West Virginia
tonight on ESPN with a 6:30 kick off. Clear weather is expected with
about 52 degrees at kick off dropping into the 40s. On Saturday,
Alabama State plays Alabama A&M in the Magic City Classic at Legion
Field with a 2:30 p.m. kick off and tape delay on ESPNU. Meanwhile,
the Citadel will be at Samford for their homecoming at 2:00 p.m. For
both games, it should be mostly sunny with about 66 at kick off and in
the 50s by the 4th quarter. NW winds 7-14 mph for both games.
Finally, Alabama is at Knoxville for an evening game Saturday. The
kick off is at 6:45 p.m. (CDT) on ESPN. It will be clear and cool with
55 degrees at kick off and dropping into the 40s. This evening for
some high school games in this part of Alabama, some light rain may be
threatening, but temperatures will be mostly in the 50s.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The blizzard that was forecast for part of Nebraska
and Kansas did not turn out nearly as bad as expected, but wind gusts
to around 50 and a couple inches of snow made it miserable. The
temperature dropped to 4 above this morning at Laramie in SE Wyoming
and in Alaska it was 16 below zero at Bettles with 11 inches of snow
on the ground. Over on the Pacific coast of Alaska, it was a raw day
with Juneau having a steady driving rain, 38 degrees and winds to 46
mph. 7 inches of rain in the last 24 hours at Key West and 3.70 in
Houston.

MY TINY CORNER OF THEWORLD: Sure glad to hear that my former
neighbor, Martin Woosley and his wife, have a new puppy after losing
their dog Huey back in the spring. Huey was over 15 years old. Pete,
their new puppy, is a Shih-Tzu. He is black with a white tummy, which
sounds very much like Little Miss Molly. He is already a big eater and
a bundle of energy. They had forgotten how many things a little doggy
can get into. As Martin describes him, "Pete is a pistol." Always
recommend not to go without dog ownership very long. However, I know
it would be very tough for me to want to new dog if something were to
happen to Molly. Molly sure did enjoy our cool walk this morning
facing a 25 mph wind and temperatures in the 50s. She is like me—she
likes it cold. Life goes on.

...A Good Soaking Tomorrow...

RAIN ON THE WAY: A major storm system over the nation's bread basket
will bring some big weather changes to Alabama during the next 48
hours. Clouds will increase today, and a few showers could break out
this afternoon. But, the most widespread rain should come from about
6:00 this evening through 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. This looks like a
beneficial rain for the state with around one inch expected for most
communities. This will also be a cool rain; a wedge type setup will
bring cooler air into Alabama from the east; looks like we will hover
in the cool 50s all day
tomorrow with a steady, soaking rain. Some thunder is not out of the
question, but with a cool and stable boundary layer strong storms
certainly won't be a problem.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: It is beginning to look like the rain could end
before the high school games begin tomorrow night, but we sure can't
promise that. One way or another, the fields will be very wet.
Temperatures for the games tomorrow night will be in the 50 to 55
degree range. In college football, Auburn is at West Virginia with a
6:30 p.m. kick off in Morgantown tonight on ESPN. Should be clear and
chilly with 54 at kick off and in the 40s by the second half. Two
games here in Birmingham with the Citadel at Samford for homecoming
and also the Magic City Classic at Legion Field with a 2:30 kick off
between Alabama A&M and Alabama State. It should be mostly clear for
both games with about 65 at kick off and 50s in the 4th quarter.
Alabama is in a crucial game in Knoxville at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on
ESPN. There may still be a slight chance of some rain in the vicinity
with 50s at kick off and about 46 by the end of the game.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The sky will clear Saturday morning as a dry slot
moves over the state; the high Saturday afternoon will be in the mid
60s. Sunday looks like a beautiful day with ample sunshine and a high
around 70.

COLD AIR BLAST NEXT WEEK: Computer models are now beginning to agree
that the coldest air so far this season will roll into Alabama early
next week. North winds will pick up Monday, and it is unlikely that we
reach the 60 degree mark. Then, we expect temperatures to fall down
into the 30s both Tuesday and Wednesday morning. At this point it
looks like Wednesday morning might be the coldest, with potential for
widespread frost, and a freeze for the colder valleys.

OCTOBER SNOW: Winter storm warnings remain in effect for parts of
Nebraska and Kansas this morning, where over six inches of snow is
expected with strong winds. That combination is expected to produce
power outages, and near "whiteout" conditions.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: Join us on ABC 33/40 tomorrow night at 7:00 for
"Southern Skies of 2008"… this is our annual fall severe weather
special. You will see some great Alabama weather stories, and learn
more about getting your family ready for our fall tornado season,
which begins in only 10 days!

...Good Chance of Rain Ahead...

FRIDAY OUR WETTEST DAY: Weather systems are maneuvering to where it
still looks like a good rain event coming up for the state of Alabama.
During the night, some slightly cooler and drier air tippy-toed into
the state from the NE. It will get out of here soon as the weather
turns around and favors a rain event. An intense low-pressure system
for October was centered near Omaha this afternoon with a cold front
down into Central Texas. As that system moves east, plenty of moist
air will flow northward from the Gulf of Mexico. There may be another
low-pressure area developing over the North Gulf of Mexico by Friday
morning. Anyway, here is what we think will happen:
Clouds will increase tomorrow. A few showers may show up by afternoon.
The showers should increase later Thursday night. Friday continues to
be the choice rain day. In fact, the rain may be steady at times and
even a thunderstorm is possible. SE winds will increase to 10-20 mph
and the temperature may not get out of the upper 50s all day.
Uncomfortable is the word. Good news, however, because we can use the
rain. Most of the rains should be out of here by the time you awaken
Saturday and the weather should be clearing. Mostly sunshine on Sunday
with a chilly early morning.

HOW MUCH RAIN: We believe that 1 inch or slightly more is entirely
reasonable with this total storm system. Not bad for October and all
of the rain will be welcome.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A few showers may be around for the Thursday night
high school games with temperatures falling through the 60s into the
upper 50s. Games Friday night will have to deal with a good chance of
rain at times, with temperatures in the 50s through the entire game.
In college football, Auburn is at West Virginia with a 6:30 p.m. kick
off in Morgantown tomorrow on ESPN. Should be clear and chilly with 54
at kick off and in the 40s by the second half. Two games here in
Birmingham with the Citadel at Samford for homecoming and also the
Magic City Classic at Legion Field with a 2:30 kick off between
Alabama A&M and Alabama State. It should be mostly clear for both
games with about 65 at kick off and 50s in the 4th quarter. Alabama is
in a crucial game in Knoxville at 6:45 p.m. Saturday on ESPN. There
may still be a slight chance of some rain in the vicinity with 50s at
kick off and about 46 when all of the Tennessee fans hop in their
boats and take off. That is a unique sight.

GLOBAL ROAMING: A Blizzard Warning for tonight and tomorrow over NW
Kansas, especially around Goodland. They could get up to 7 inches of
snow with blinding visibility under ¼ mile at times and winds gusting
as high as 60 mph. Other parts of the Plains will also be affected.
Cold temperatures this morning included 8 above at Stanley, Idaho and
7 below at Kaltag, Alaska. It was 23 at Banner Elk and Jefferson, both
in the North Carolina mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It may be because it is cooler, but
Little Miss Molly has flashed back to her early day habits of wanting
to walk forever. I believe if I had not turned her around, she would
have wound up at DeSoto State Park today. She does not miss anything
and there is always something interesting to see. This morning, we saw
a teenage butterfly lying in the middle of the concrete walk. Molly
approached it very slowly and finally touched it with her nose. The
butterfly fluttered upward quickly and Molly bolted. I had assumed
that the butterfly had suffered a cardiac arrest, but it may have been
just resting. An old crow played music for us for the entire walk.
Life goes on.

...Rain Returns Late Tomorrow...

ONE MORE DRY DAY: Expect another fantastic October day today with
ample sunshine and a high in the mid 70s. Just the kind of weather you
expect in mid-October in Alabama. But, to the west, a major storm is
moving out into the Great Plains, and will bring big changes to our
weather before the week is over.

In advance of the storm system, clouds will increase tomorrow, and
showers should move into West Alabama during the afternoon. The rain
will become more widespread tomorrow night and Friday as the big upper
low drifts slowly to the east/southeast. At this point it still looks
like most of the rain will fall from around 6:00 p.m. tomorrow through
12:00 midnight Friday night, and amounts of around one inch can be
expected statewide. Some thunder could be involved due to the dynamic
forcing from the system, but we really don't expect a problem with
strong to severe storms since the air is stable in the lower levels.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND? A dry slot will move over Alabama on Saturday,
and morning clouds should give way to a partly sunny afternoon. Sunday
also looks dry with a good supply of sunshine. Temperatures over the
weekend should be pleasant, with highs between 65 and 70, and early
morning lows in the 40s.

EARLY FOOTBALL FORECAST: This week we have a Thursday night special…
Auburn plays at West Virginia (kickoff at 6:30 p.m. CDT ON ESPN) in
Morgantown. The weather will be excellent; a clear sky with a kickoff
temperature of 54 degrees, dropping through the 40s during the game.
If you are making the trip you will need a warm jacket.
Saturday… Alabama will take on the Tennessee Volunteers at 6:45 (CDT)
Saturday night on ESPN. The big cold core upper low will be a big
player here… so we will mention a chance of showers during the game
with temperatures falling through the 50s, possibly reaching the 40s
by the fourth quarter. And, yes, a few snow flakes are possible in the
Great Smoky mountains (the higher terrain) just east of Knoxville
Saturday night into Sunday.

MAJOR OCTOBER SNOW: Thundersnow was reported west of Denver yesterday,
and a big snow event is shaping up today for parts of Nebraska and
Kansas; the NWS office in North Platte, Nebraska is forecasting snow
totals of over 6 inches along with north winds up to 60 mph making for
white-out conditions and power outages.

PRIME TIME SPECIAL: Join us on ABC 33/40 Friday at 7:00 for "Southern
Skies of 2008"… this is our annual fall severe weather special. You
will see some great Alabama weather stories, and learn more about
getting your family ready for our fall tornado season, which begins in

...Time For A Change In Weather...

BEST CHANCE OF SHOWERS FRIDAY: A storm system was trying to get all
of its troops in line in the Rockies and Western Plains to start an
eastward march. This storm system is going to bring foul weather to a
rather wide area. By daybreak, the main low-pressure area should be
near Omaha and Wichita and by late Wednesday over Missouri and Iowa.
On Thursday, the low sort of stalls in Kansas and Missouri, but it
pushes a cold front eastward into the southeast states. Meanwhile, an
increase in SE wind flow will transport a lot of moist air into Alabama.

WHAT DOES ALL THIS MANEUVERING MEAN: We believe some showers will
reach Alabama later in the day Thursday and Thursday night. All the
data that we can digest points to Friday as the best day for rain and
there could also be a few thunderstorms involved. So far, the Storm
Prediction Center has not outlined any part of Alabama for a severe
weather risk on Thursday. We believe the atmosphere will remain stable
enough to prevent that.

HOW MUCH RAIN: We will say an average of about 1 inch across Central
Alabama for the whole system. A few of those showers may hang around
until early Saturday morning and then clouds should decrease. We will
have a complete football weather forecast in later editions, but it
appears that high school games Friday night may have to deal with
showers. Saturday
afternoon college games look okay.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A large area of uncomfortable weather persists over
the NW Caribbean. The whole mess is drifting west. There appears to be
little chance for development into a tropical depression or tropical
storm.

SEVERE WEATHER: Big snow event for parts of the Plains and Rockies
from this system. Out on the Plains, a slight risk of some severe
thunderstorms over Eastern Colorado, the west half of Kansas, and
Western Oklahoma by tomorrow shifting as far east as NE Texas on
Thursday.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Speaking of roaming, we did some last night, but it
covered only one-zillionth of the globe. Tim Coleman along with ABC
33/40 Skywatcher, Wally Coker and I did a temperature study up and
down the ridges of NE Jefferson, St. Clair and Blount County last
evening to study inversions. Tim will have all the details on that.
Cold temperatures this morning included 18 at Pine River, Hibbing and
Big Fork all in Minnesota. Numerous snow showers tonight in Cheyenne
with gusts to 40. Western Nebraska may be even harder hit.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I had promised to post a story on the
33/40 Blog about rescue dogs. It is already on the Blog and has drawn
quite a bit of comment. If I ever am in the market for another dog, I
will go to an animal shelter without hesitation. I often wonder what
Molly would do if we brought in about three cats. I feel sure she
would have an aneurysm and cardiac arrest. But she would certainly
quickly get acquainted with them and start playing. On our last walk,
the big black dog one-quarter mile away with the crooked tail that
always points east, charged Molly five or six times. She has gotten
used to him. She jumps straight up with her little legs spinning in
the wind and takes off only to turn around to come back and charge the
big dog. They now seem to understand each other. Life goes on.

...Rain Returns By The End of the Week...

ANOTHER DELIGHTFUL DAY: The fine fall weather continues across Alabama
today. After a chilly start, we should warm into the mid 70s with a
good supply of sunshine. Pretty much the same story tomorrow, then we
deal with weather changes before the week is over.

TO THE WEST: A storm system will move out of the Rockies during the
next 24 hours, and a deep upper low is expected to be over the Central
Plains by tomorrow night. This will move slowly to the east, and the
surface system below the upper low will begin to pull moist air back
into Alabama by Thursday evening.
We will forecast periods of rain Thursday night into Friday statewide.
There might be a little thunder, but the air will be relatively
stable. At this time, we are projecting rain totals in the one-half to
one inch range statewide, and most of the rain should fall from 6:00
p.m. Thursday until 12:00 midnight Friday. There is some chance the
high could be over in time for the high football games Friday night,
but that is just a chance at this time.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A dry slot rotating around the upper air low should
move into Alabama as the weekend begins; the sky becomes partly sunny
Saturday, and Sunday should feature a good supply of sunshine. At this
time it looks like highs over the weekend will be in the upper 60s,
generally between 66 and 69 degrees.
Some hint of a strong upper trough forming over the eastern third of
the nation early next week, and that has the potential to bring the
coldest air so far this season in about 6 to 7 days, with potential
for the first widespread frost of the season. Stay tuned.

TROPICS: Disturbed weather continues over the western Caribbean;
pressures have been rising in recent days. However, there is a chance
that disturbance could move northward into the Southeast Gulf of
Mexico by the end of the week, ultimately bringing heavy rain to parts
of the Florida peninsula. It is no threat to Alabama one way or
another. The hurricane season ends on the last day of November.

ON THIS DATE IN 1743: Benjamin Franklin makes the revolutionary
discovery that the wind in storm systems rotate in a counter clockwise
direction. Franklin was waiting in Philadelphia that night to view a
lunar eclipse, but had his opportunity foiled by a nor'easter that
blocked the sky with clouds. Franklin later discovered that his
brother in Boston was able to observe the eclipse clearly and that the
storm did not arrive at his location until four hours later. It
puzzled Franklin that the system seemed to move from southwest to
northeast even though winds at his location were from the northeast.
He theorized that the winds in the storm system must have been
rotating around a center. A brilliant deduction considering he had no
satellite to show him the big picture!

...Cool Nights; Comfortable Days...

SEVERELY CLEAR: That term is an inside joke when we used to be at the
National Weather Service at Birmingham Airport. In those days, we did
all of the pilot weather briefing. We had one pilot who owned a light
plane and flew all across the country on business. He would usually
call about daybreak and want a briefing for the day. He always wanted
not just clear weather, but severely clear. The name stuck. In later
years, he made an emergency landing twice in a cow pasture between
Birmingham and Chattanooga because of low ceilings. Other pilots in
the area named the cow pasture after him.

We certainly had severely clear weather today. A big dome of
high-pressure area guaranteed that. The atmosphere looks almost void
of any pollutants. Out travelling this morning over the ridges of NE
Jefferson County, I imagine the visibility would be about 60 miles.
That does not happen in summer.

THE MORNING CHILL: As usual, we have a long list of low temperatures
posted on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but here are a few samples:

30 at Grantley, Broomtown (NE Alabama)
32 Russellville
33 Muscadine (windshields covered with frost)
35 Hamilton, Cottondale
36 Scrougout, Gaylesville
39 Moulton, Concord/Hueytown, Jasper, Vernon, Vigo
41 Tuscaloosa
43 Anniston
46 Birmingham Airport

OUR NEXT WEATHER CHANGE: More great weather through Wednesday, but a
slight chance of showers showing up on Thursday and increasing
Thursday night and Friday. The main rain day will likely be on Friday.
We may still have some showers around over the weekend.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Very little excitement. A low-pressure area over
the Gulf of Honduras is affecting a large part of the NW Caribbean. It
is practically stalled and not much chance of any development.

GLOBAL ROAMING: A snow survey this morning shows that virtually all
of Alaska now has a snow cover, as well as about the north ½ of
Canada. In the lower 48, only 6/10 of 1% was covered—most of that in
the mountain west…the temperature in Basrah, Iraq will be about 95
Tuesday and Wednesday…it was 15 below this morning in Bettles, Alaska
and 15 in Berlin, New Hampshire…it is interesting to note that the
State of Alaska has experienced a 180-degree swing in temperature over
the years, ranging from 100 on June 27, 1915 at Ft. Yukon to a low of
80 below on January 23, 1971 at Prospect Creek Camp. That is the only
time it has ever been 100 in Alaska and, ironically, that 100 ties the
all-time record for the Hawaiian Islands.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Took a 212-mile round trip down into
West Alabama yesterday and had a ball. Destination, of course, was
good old Havana and Havana Junction. It was homecoming day for the
small, but neat, Havana Methodist Church. Thanks to Mary Ann Avery and
Donald Rainey for letting everyone know. My sister and I used to walk
two miles each way every Sunday to that small church, even though we
were Baptist. Saw a lot of old friends. The Warrior River Valley was
sparkling clear with big fields of rolled up hay and horses and cows.
We had a feast at the old Havana School after the service. When I got
home, I could tell Little Miss Molly knew I had been gone too long.
She shadowed me the rest of the afternoon and late into the night,
even taking naps right at my feet. She is my little "stick-tight." I
sometimes call her Super Glue.

...Nearly Perfect...

A lot of folks would pay good money to have this kind of weather. If
you live in Alabama, you don't have to. It's free! After another
refreshing start this morning, look for a fine fall day across Central
Alabama with lots of blue skies, a light easterly wind, low humidity
and temperatures in the lower 70s. The first half of the week will
feature similar conditions before our next chance of rain comes in
late Thursday.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure is centered near Greenville, South
Carolina this morning. The circulation around this high will shift
our winds gradually around to the south today. Temperatures today
will edge above 70 again, with highs generally in the lower 70s.
Skies will be mostly sunny. Tonight will be generally a copy of the
last couple of nights, although temperatures will be a couple of
degrees warmer than last night. By late Tuesday, an upper level
trough will be sharpening over the Rockies. We should still have fine
weather with mostly sunny skies and fabulously mild temperatures in
the 40s Tuesday morning and highs in the middle 70s. It looks like it
will cut off into a bowling ball of an upper low over Kansas by
Wednesday.

A strong surface low will be over southern Nebraska by then. Over
Alabama, we will see an increasing southeasterly flow and that will
result in more in the way of clouds, especially in the morning, but it
won't be completely cloudy. By Thursday, clouds will be increasing
and we will be preparing for a batch of showers and storms that will
move in overnight. If enough Gulf moisture gets in here, the slow
moving system could produce a nice rain event, with most spots getting
about an inch. The rain should move out by Friday evening setting the
stage for a nice weekend.

DROUGHT UPDATE: Overall drought conditions eased a bit over Alabama
last week. Still, 90% of the state is at least abnormally dry.
Twelve percent of the state is officially considered to be in a
drought, down from 52.7 percent a week ago. Those counties are in
Northeast Alabama and down along the Georgia border.

TROPICS CHECK: Weak low pressure over the northwestern Caribbean
will move over the Yucatan over the next couple of days. It may
eventually emerge into the Gulf and become a tropical depression.
Chances are low.

ON THIS DATE IN 1976: The deadliest ferry accident in U.S. history
as the George Prince was struck by the tanker Frosta on the
Mississippi River between Destrehan and Luling in St. Charles Parish,
Louisiana just after 6 a.m. on a clear and frosty morning. The Frosta
caused the ferry to capsize, flipping cars, trucks and people into the
water. Seventy six people died including the Captain of the George
Prince, eighteen survived and one was never found. The captain of the
ferry was found to have a blood alcohol content very close to the
legal limit after the accident. The official investigation concluded
that neither crew took appropriate action to avoid the collision.
Reforms resulted from the disaster, including random alcohol and drug
testing for pilots and navigation rules were changed to give right of
way to ship moving up and down river instead of those crossing the
river. Even as the accident occurred, the massive Hale Boggs Bridge
was under construction barely a mile away.

===================================================================

I couldn't imagine a much more beautiful morning than the one that we
experienced today here in Central Alabama. Gorgeous blue skies, cool
temperatures and light winds made it difficult to tell if it were
October or April. And both can be superb here in our state. Lows
across Central Alabama at Anniston, Birmingham and Tuscaloosa were 42,
43 and 44 respectively. Pinson dropped to 40. Across the Tennessee
Valley, lows included 36 at Fort Payne and Meridianvile, 37 at Muscle
Shoals, 38 at Crossville and Decatur and 39F at the Cullman Airport.
Skywatcher John Talbot reports 39 in Hueytown.

NATIONALLY: Looking at a composite of radars across the U.S. this
afternoon, we find showers across the Northern Plains, with some snow
in southern Montana. There could be a storm or two this afternoon
from Nebraska to Iowa, but stable air covers much of the country.
Light rain continues over the northern Great Lakes states and showers
are retreating eastward away from the Northeast with the coastal low
that developed yesterday off the Carolinas. The closest precipitation
to Alabama is well offshore of the coast of Delaware.

OUR FORECAST: Our beautiful weather will continue for the next few
days, likely through Wednesday as high pressure remains in control of
our weather. That high is over New England this afternoon, with a
huge ridge extending into the Deep South. This is keeping a dry
easterly flow going across Alabama. Tomorrow, the center of the high
will shift to the Southeast, turning our winds to the south. Moisture
levels will go up a bit. Meanwhile, a large storm system will take
shape over the Rockies Tuesday night and shift onto the Plains
Wednesday. Thursday will be a transition day for us, with increasing
clouds and a good chance of showers and storms during the overnight.
The system should be a slow mover and with a good influx of Gulf
moisture, we could see some nice rains continuing into a large part of
Friday. That would be lovely. The weekend looks fine, as rain should
end before Friday evening, leaving fair and seasonable weather for
Saturday and Sunday.

TROPICS: All quiet for now. A weak low pressure system is over the
northwestern Caribbean. This is where we will look for the potential
of tropical development over the next few days. We could see a
tropical low form and move into the southern Gulf during and move
toward southern Florida.

A QUICK NOTE ON BASEBALL: I fear that the clock may have struck
midnight with two outs in the seventh inning Thursday night on the
Cinderella story that has been the Tampa Bay Rays this season. The
ghosts of Fenway were awakened by Coco Crisp's last ditch fouling off
of pitch after pitch until a single resulted. This precipitated the
greatest post season comeback since 1929. Tonight will feature a
loser leave town elimination match in the Trop in Tampa. It will be
exciting. I have to brag that I chose the Rays to win the World
Series during Spring Training this year. It seemed foolish at the
time, as the odds against such a preposterous outcome to the season
were reportedly 1000:1. So, I have to admit I am pulling for the Rays
tonight. Good luck to both teams.

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: Early season snows fell in the mountains of
West Virginia, where 1-2 feet of snow fell near Summersville and
Richwood. Many trees that were still in full foliage were felled by
the weight of the snow. The rain changed to a record early, heavy,
wet snow over the southern mountains of West Virginia. It was the
worst forest disaster since the fires of 1952-53.....

...Refreshing Start...

It is another glorious October morning across Central Alabama.
Temperatures quickly fell through the 50s into the 40s overnight. By
the time everything is accounted for, there will most certainly be
some 30s in the normally colder spots of North Alabama. After this
refreshing start, get ready for another fine fall day.

YOUR FORECAST: High pressure is centered over New England this
morning. A ridge extends from the strong high all the way down into
the Deep South. This high pressure is giving us our spectacular
autumn conditions. A new high center will form over Georgia and the
Carolinas over the next 24 hours, continuing the fair weather into
Monday. Temperatures will edge up into the middle 70s for daytime
highs, and morning lows will likely still be in the 40s both days.

By Wednesday, we will see the synoptic pattern changing as a
big storm system forms to our west. Wednesday should still be dry,
but we will see moisture levels begin to rise along with more clouds
as southeast winds kick in. Thursday will bring increasing clouds and
a chance of overnight showers and storms. Hopefully, they will hold
off for Thursday night high school games. This system should pick up
a fairy good supply of Gulf moisture, so hopefully it will bring a
decent shot of rain late Thursday night into Friday morning. The
front may stall over North Alabama, keeping showers in the forecast
through Friday and even into Saturday. The front should wash out
during the day on Saturday. Sunday shows promise for improving
weather. Weekend temperatures will be seasonable, with highs around
70 and lows near 50.

IN THE TROPICS: Tropical Storm Omar was declared dead by the NHC late
Saturday morning, well east of Bermuda. The remnants of Tropical
Depression Sixteen remain over land and are not expected to
regenerate. The western Caribbean will be the region to watch over
the next week as conditions will be favorable for a tropical cyclone
to form. There has not been any run to run consistency from the
global models as to how the situation might turn out. We will have to
wait and see.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Early record setting snows over Indiana
included 10.5 inches at Kokomo and 9.3 inches at Indianapolis. 8.8
inches fell at South Bend IN to establish a new record for any
October. Power was knocked out for most of the morning to half of
the population in Cincinnati, Ohio.

ON THIS DATE IN 2005: Hurricane Wilma in the Caribbean was completing
an incredible rapid intensification that saw the monster hurricane
drop from 954 millibars to 901 millibars in a little over five hours.
This computed to an astounding 9.9 millibar/hour deepening. Wilma
shattered all Atlantic records for deepening, with 6, 12 and 24 hour
drops of 54, 88 and 97 millibars respectively for those time periods.
The former 12 hour deepening record was held by Hurricane Allen in
1980, which saw a drop of 48 millibars in 12 hours.
