...Rain Returns By The End of the Week...

ANOTHER DELIGHTFUL DAY: The fine fall weather continues across Alabama
today. After a chilly start, we should warm into the mid 70s with a
good supply of sunshine. Pretty much the same story tomorrow, then we
deal with weather changes before the week is over.

TO THE WEST: A storm system will move out of the Rockies during the
next 24 hours, and a deep upper low is expected to be over the Central
Plains by tomorrow night. This will move slowly to the east, and the
surface system below the upper low will begin to pull moist air back
into Alabama by Thursday evening.
We will forecast periods of rain Thursday night into Friday statewide.
There might be a little thunder, but the air will be relatively
stable. At this time, we are projecting rain totals in the one-half to
one inch range statewide, and most of the rain should fall from 6:00
p.m. Thursday until 12:00 midnight Friday. There is some chance the
high could be over in time for the high football games Friday night,
but that is just a chance at this time.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A dry slot rotating around the upper air low should
move into Alabama as the weekend begins; the sky becomes partly sunny
Saturday, and Sunday should feature a good supply of sunshine. At this
time it looks like highs over the weekend will be in the upper 60s,
generally between 66 and 69 degrees.
Some hint of a strong upper trough forming over the eastern third of
the nation early next week, and that has the potential to bring the
coldest air so far this season in about 6 to 7 days, with potential
for the first widespread frost of the season. Stay tuned.

TROPICS: Disturbed weather continues over the western Caribbean;
pressures have been rising in recent days. However, there is a chance
that disturbance could move northward into the Southeast Gulf of
Mexico by the end of the week, ultimately bringing heavy rain to parts
of the Florida peninsula. It is no threat to Alabama one way or
another. The hurricane season ends on the last day of November.

ON THIS DATE IN 1743: Benjamin Franklin makes the revolutionary
discovery that the wind in storm systems rotate in a counter clockwise
direction. Franklin was waiting in Philadelphia that night to view a
lunar eclipse, but had his opportunity foiled by a nor'easter that
blocked the sky with clouds. Franklin later discovered that his
brother in Boston was able to observe the eclipse clearly and that the
storm did not arrive at his location until four hours later. It
puzzled Franklin that the system seemed to move from southwest to
northeast even though winds at his location were from the northeast.
He theorized that the winds in the storm system must have been
rotating around a center. A brilliant deduction considering he had no
satellite to show him the big picture!
