ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday May 3, 2008
===================================================================
ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's
safe to dig.

Every digging project requires a call to Alabama One Call--even small
projects like building a fence, planting shrubs and trees or
installing a mailbox.

One free easy call to 811 or 205-252-4444 at least 48 hours prior to
digging:

* Gets utility owned lines marked for free!
* Complies with Alabama Act 94-487.
* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service
disruptions to your neighborhood.

...Saturday Rumbles...

I have to admit that the rain and storms made for a nice sleeping
situation for many folks on this Saturday morning. The weather makes
a few people nervous, so for them, not so much, but there was little
to worry about this morning. There were some severe thunderstorm
warnings west of Montgomery up to extreme southern Chilton County, but
no reports of anything larger than pea to dime sized hail. A severe
thunderstorm watch was posted until 1p.m. for South and Central
Alabama, coming up almost as far as the Birmingham Metro area, but not
quite. So, all in all, just a nice rain and thunder event this
morning for the most part across the area.

REDEVELOPMENT LATER? The cold front was taking its sweet time getting
to Alabama. It was back near the Mississippi River at late morning.
Skies cleared rather quickly from the west behind the precipitation
area. Meanwhile, colder air aloft will make for unstable conditions.
Acting against development will be dry aloft, but any storms that do
manage to form could produce strong damaging wind gusts and fairly
significant hail. So, we will be waiting on drier air to move in with
the front later this afternoon in western section and across the rest
of the area this evening. In areas that see lots of sun these
afternoon, temperatures will soar into the low 80s. Most areas will
be in the 70s, but areas that stay cloudy may have a hard getting there.

OVERNIGHT: Expect fair conditions overnight with a slight northwest
breeze and comfortable readings in the upper 40s at most locations. A
few low clouds or a little patchy fog could possibly form toward
morning, but it looks minor.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Tomorrow will be an outstanding day
weatherwise, with lots of sunshine. Highs tomorrow will be in the
middle and upper 70s. It's back into the 40s tomorrow night, as high
pressure settles in over Alabama.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like a very nice day with
lots of sun and mild temperatures in the upper 70s. By Tuesday,
weather maps will feature a developing low over the Plains states.
That low will send a surge of moisture towards Alabama Tuesday night
that could set off a few showers. The low will produce a significant
severe weather outbreak on Wednesday in Oklahoma, Northeast Texas and
Arkansas up into Kansas. We may stay dry until Thursday night, when a
few showers/storms could enter the picture.

A DANGEROUS IDEA:A sidebar to the May 3, 1999 Oklahoma
severe weather outbreak: a misconception had developed in the general
public that if a tornado was approaching, the girders underneath a
bridge would provide protection. The misconception stemmed from
dramatic footage from a news crew during the Andover KS tornado of
1991 that sought refuge under an overpass as the tornado struck it
directly. Unfortunately, several people were killed during the
Oklahoma City tornado as they hid underneath an interstate bridge. The
safest thing is to avoid the storm all together. If the storm is
close, the best thing to do is to abandon your automobile and seek
shelter in a building on the lowest floor in an interior room without
windows. If no shelter is available find a ditch or low spot and cover
your head.

...A Stormy Saturday...

It has been another Friday night of tracking severe
weather across the Deep South. Tornadoes on Friday struck Central
Arkansas hard, causing at least seven fatalities. During the
afternoon, they intensified over northern Mississippi, producing
reports of funnel clouds and tornadoes from Oxford over to Northeast
Mississippi. Meanwhile, as night fell, the airmass over northern
Louisiana into western Mississippi became very dynamic, and severe
thunderstorm erupted. Tornado reports began to come in across the
Mississippi River Delta. It turned into a very long night.

FOR YOUR SATURDAY: Thunderstorms moved into West Alabama
after midnight and proceeded eastward, diminishing in intensity as it
went. Some of the storms were on the strong side, but were far weaker
generally than their predecessors to the west of Alabama from
earlier. Rain and storms will continue through the noon hour, but the
precipitation should continue to fall apart.

BUT: We note that the main cold front is still moving
through Mississippi this morning. In areas where the sun breaks out
later this morning, strong storms could redevelop this afternoon
as the front moves into Alabama. The best chance for this will be
over eastern sections of the state. Some of those storms could be
strong to severe, but they will quickly move into Georgia by evening.

DRIER AIR: Drier air will move into the area tonight
behind the front. Western sections will see sunshine by early
afternoon, and the clearing will spread eastward. Overnight, clear
skies and light winds will be the rule, and the mercury will fall into
the upper 40s and lower 50s across the area.

SUPER SUNDAY: Tomorrow looks like a splendid day. There
could be a little low cloudiness and fog early, but sunshine should
rule the day, with very pleasant temperatures in the lower and middle
70s. Looks for another refereshing night Sunday night, with lows in
the middle and upper 40s by Monday morning.

THE WEEK AHEAD: Monday looks like a gorgeous day with
lots of sunshine and highs in the upper 70s. QA weak front will try
to drop into the area on Tuesday, perhaps bringing a chance of showers
Tuesday night into Wednesday. Thursday looks partly cloudy and warm.
An interesting little low pressure system will swing across the
Tennessee Valley Thursday night into Friday, bringing another chance
of showers and storms.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: Today is the ninth anniversary of
one of the worst tornadoes to ever hit the United States. The
Oklahoma City tornado David Andra, the Science and Operations Officer
at the NWS in Norman, Oklahoma watched in horror as one of the most
violent tornadoes observed charged toward the Oklahoma City Metro
area. Forecasters in the office asked if they were doing all they
could do to get the message out to the public. Andra responded by
writing the first ever Tornado Emergency Message. The enhanced
wording is used in especially threatening situations when a large and
damaging tornado is occurring.

ALABAMA ONE CALL

KNOW WHAT'S BELOW
CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Whether planning to do it yourself or hire a professional excavator,
smart digging
means calling 811 before each job to find out where it's safe to dig.

* Helps prevent undesired consequences and possible service disruptions
to your neighborhood.

===================================================================

CHANCE OF SEVERE WEATHER UPCOMING: We think the risk of severe
weather across Central Alabama will come Saturday, but it is not out
of the question that we could see a few warnings late tonight over the
NW counties. The Storm Prediction Center altered the Saturday severe
weather outlook for Alabama. They now include all of the state under a
Slight Risk, except the extreme NW. That implies that some of the
strongest thunderstorms will be moving into extreme NW Alabama late
tonight and, for sure, before daybreak Saturday. We have studied
everything we can get our hands on today and we believe the wind will
shift around to the west around midday Saturday. We also believe that
the maximum shower and thunderstorm activity for Central Alabama,
including Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston, will be mid morning
until early afternoon. The showers and storms should diminish
considerably before nightfall. We are hoping that the slight risk will
hold true instead of an upgrade to moderate. We believe it will, but
we will know for sure before daybreak. While Saturday will be stormy,
it will be followed by some extremely pleasant weather Sunday, Monday
and Tuesday with mostly sunshine and highs only in the upper 70s. The
dew point will drop into the 40s by Sunday. Translation: much lower
humidity.

RAIN POTENTIAL: Not much change in our thinking. We believe 1 inch
to possibly 1.50 inches is possible across Central Alabama. Rain
deficits are increasing again, but they are not as serious as last
year at this time. Birmingham Airport has received 16.96 inches this
year, more than double the 9.20 that we had on May 2 last year.

TORNADOES AND BLIZZARDS: A very wild day of weather across the
midsection of the nation. Numerous Tornado Warnings overnight and
today. There are reports now of 7 fatalities in Northern Arkansas.
That number will probably be outdated by the time you read this. A new
Tornado Watch was issued this afternoon that goes until 8:00 tonight
for Eastern Arkansas, NW Mississippi and West Tennessee. The Watch
touches the NW tip of Alabama, so we may get some type of watch in NW
Alabama later tonight. An intense low-pressure area was moving across
Iowa today. Over on the north and west side of the low, powerful winds
over 60 mph was causing blizzard conditions. I-90 was closed through
much of Western South Dakota and East Wyoming…7 to 10 foot drifts of
snow in the Black Hills of South Dakota…48 inches on the ground at
Harding, South Dakota, not counting drifts and 30 inches at Spearfish,
South Dakota. The mayor of Rapid City recommended that residents stay
home.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure was glad to get an e-mail from
Tina Nibblett that they had gotten a new puppy named Trixie. They were
devastated when their long-time pal, Scooby, died 5 months ago. They
decided to wait 5 months before getting another dog, but the family
has instantly bonded with little Trixie…I highly recommend not going
too long without a dog. When we had bad luck with 3 dogs in a row, we
waited over 20 years. Then, my little pal, Little Miss Molly, walked
in on a Sunday afternoon and made me wish I had not waited. Life goes
on......

...A Stormy Saturday Ahead...

STORMY TIMES AHEAD: A major storm system to the west of Alabama will
bring a significant risk of severe weather today to the general area
from Monroe, Louisiana to St. Louis, MO, where the Storm Prediction
Center has defined a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms. A slight
risk surrounds that area, and extends from South Louisiana to near
Milwaukee and Detroit. Here in Alabama, today will be warm and windy
with a mix of sun and clouds, and only a small risk of an afternoon
shower.

The big band of showers and storms to the west should move into
Northwest Alabama late tonight, possibly after midnight. These storms
could be severe, but they should slowly weaken during the pre-dawn
hours tomorrow as the air becomes more stable. But, we expect storms
to re-intensify during the day tomorrow, and the forecast instability
values and wind profiles suggest that some storms could be strong to
severe. SPC has much of Alabama in a slight risk of severe weather
tomorrow, and some storms could produce hail and high winds. An
isolated tornado is certainly not out of the question with a fair
amount of helicity.

The greatest risk of severe storms will be in the 11:00 a.m. to 6:00
p.m. time frame. But, a shower or storm is possible at almost any hour
of the day, so if you have an outdoor event planned be
prepared for some rain, possibly heavy at times. We are projecting
average rain totals of one inch, but isolated spots could approach two
inches where stronger storms develop.

DRIER AIR SUNDAY: The sky will clear tomorrow night, and Sunday will
be a dry day with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the low to
mid 70s along with lower humidity levels. The dry air will stay in
place during the first half of next week.

BIG STORMS YESTERDAY AND LAST NIGHT: A 100 yard wide multi-vortex
tornado was reported last night in Osage County, Oklahoma near the
community of Ralston. Tornadoes were also reported near Rock Valley,
Iowa and Blackburn, Arkansas. Golf ball sized hail was reported on the
campus of the University of Kansas in Lawrence, and hail stones 3
inches in diameter were reported near Midwest City, Oklahoma.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: Record warmth in Juneau AK with a high of 72
degrees, while record cold affected the Hawaiian Islands with a record
low of 60 degrees at Honolulu.

AROUND THE NATION: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Laredo,
Texas with 107 degrees. Stanley, Idaho dropped to 7 degrees early
yesterday morning. Heavy snow was the story for parts of the Rocky
Mountain states yesterday; the wintry weather was blamed for a rash of
minor accidents that closed westbound Interstate 70 for about 90
minutes just west of Denver. Up to 40 cars were involved in minor
accidents on U.S. 36 near Lyons, 30 miles northwest of Denver.

MAIN STORMS DELAYED UNTIL SATURDAY: Earlier this week we were
projecting for our next round of showers and thunderstorms to occur on
Friday. There will be a few, mostly later in the day and at night. Our
great friends, the weather models, have been gradually pushing the
showers and storms further back. Everything is coming together now to
give us a good round of showers and thunderstorms, mainly Saturday and
extending into Saturday night. The Storm Prediction Center has almost
the entire state of Alabama under a Slight Risk of severe weather for
Saturday. We have mentioned in our forecast that some of the storms
could become severe. We are always interested in how much rain we will
get anytime we get showers and storms, because of obvious reasons. We
think about 1 inch to 1.30 across Central Alabama. Anytime the storms
slow in forward speed that increases the rain potential.

The entire weekend will not be stormy. We expect clearing weather
Sunday with another good drop in humidity. Our high temperature both
Sunday and Monday will be in the mid 70s. The cold front will move
across Alabama late Saturday night and Sunday morning. It will not be
as chilly behind this front, but we do look for mid 40s Monday morning.

THE SEVERE WEATHER SITUATION: The NWS has upgraded the risk for a
part of SE Kansas this afternoon and tonight to Moderate. This
includes Wichita and the Kansas City area and a Slight Risk area for
East Oklahoma and NW Arkansas north into Western Iowa and Eastern
Nebraska. The situation looks more serious for tomorrow with a
Moderate Risk area all the way from Monroe, Louisiana northward to
include Little Rock, Memphis and the extreme SE part of Missouri into
Southern Illinois. A Slight Risk goes all the way from New Orleans to
Chicago and Milwaukee. Then on Saturday, a Slight Risk includes all of
Alabama, the SE half of Mississippi and South/Central Tennessee.

WINTER FIGHTING BACK: It almost seems like mid winter in a large
part of North and Central Rockies and that will continue at least
until tomorrow. A vicious low-pressure area was centered this
afternoon near Omaha. It is fouling up the weather over many states.
On Monarch Pass in Colorado, the midday temperature was 12 with winds
to 51 mph and a wind chill of 13 below zero. Denver had ¼ mile
visibility and snow…16 inches of new snow at Alta in the Wasatch
Mountains of North Utah…in Central Colorado, places like Vail and
Aspen had 5 to 10 inches of snow were expected with near whiteout
conditions along with some thunder and lightning…Eureka, Nevada was
the lower 48 cold spot this morning with 11.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Bridget Tytler from Meadowbrook reads
our material daily. This is her reaction to my story about growing old
with Molly. "J.B., your Miss Molly column touched home with me
yesterday. The oldest of our dogs is Maggie, a miniature Fox Terrier,
who will be 14 in August. She is blind, pretty deaf and has now taken
to getting up in the middle of the night several times with a need to
go. My husband (God bless him) gets up, puts on his robe and slippers
and navigates our long steps down to the backyard with little Maggie
in tow. He waits on her and brings her back safely to the bed. He says
it is like having a baby in the house again, but I know he is
remembering all the times Maggie has mended our broken hearts over the
years. Sometimes one of the younger dogs will go down in the yard and
herd Maggie back up the steps. Maggie has earned a place of honor and
love in our family and will be terribly missed when she is gone."

...Rain Returns Tomorrow Night...

A WARM AND BREEZY MAY DAY: We begin the new month with warm and breezy
weather conditions across Alabama. With a good supply of sunshine,
temperatures will rise into the low 80s this afternoon. Some West
Alabama communities could reach the mid 80s as our warming trend
continues.

MOIST AIR RETURNS: A persistent southerly flow will bring a moist air
mass into Alabama tomorrow, and we will mention the chance of a shower
during the afternoon hours, but it now looks like most of the day
tomorrow will be dry with warm and breezy conditions continuing along
with a mix of sun and clouds. The chance of showers and storms will
increase tomorrow night, especially after midnight, as a storm system
gets closer to Alabama.

STORMY SATURDAY: The computer models have trended toward a slower
solution with this system, meaning the chance of showers and storms
will linger into a good part of the day Saturday. In fact, with the
daytime heating process and strong wind fields, it now appears that we
will have a chance of strong to severe thunderstorms Saturday as the
primary system passes through. The storms will end from west to east
during the mid to late afternoon hours, and drier air returns to the
state for Saturday night and Sunday. Some pretty respectable rain
amounts are possible; most places will see one inch, with isolated
heavier totals.

PEEK AT NEXT WEEK: It now looks like the first half of next week will
be dry and mild with daily highs in the 70s; the next chance of rain
will come toward the end of the week, Thursday night or Friday.

MAY IN ALABAMA: We begin the month today with an average high of 77
and an average low of 53. By May 31, the average high rises to 84 with
an average low of 62. The hottest temperature on record in May is 99,
recorded on May 28, 1962, and May 29, 1898. The coldest for the month
is 36 degrees, which happened on May 4, 1971.
Our average rain for the month is 4.83", and May is still considered
part of our spring tornado season. In fact, some very violent
tornadoes have visited our state in late May, like the May 27, 1973 F4
tornado that moved from Greensboro to Brent to Wilsonville, killing 7
people and injuring 199.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: The temperature in Pinson soared 43 degrees
yesterday, from a morning low of 37 to an afternoon high of 80.
Temperatures around the nation yesterday ranged from 100 degrees at
Wink, Texas to 8 below zero at Nuiqsut, Alaska. There is a risk of
severe weather today from near Sherman, Texas to Des Moines, Iowa.
