...Cool Period Ahead...

Skies cleared overnight across the state as drier air continued to
filter in from the northwest. A few light showers and even some sleet
was reported before the clouds and precipitation moved out.
Temperatures fell into the 30s, but a persistent north wind overnight
prevented frost from forming.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Sunshine will greet the day, and the day will be
mostly sunny. A few stratocumulus clouds may pop up later this
morning, but they will likely evaporate as the day goes on. Highs
will top out right around 50 degrees, with a few folks on the 40s
side, a few north of there. It will be clear and cool tonight, with
lows in the 30s again. The models think it will be warmer tonight
than last night, which I really don't get. There will be some frost,
and isolated colder spots may see a freeze.

DRY WEEK AHEAD: Monday will dawn sunny, and get used to it. Sunshine
will rule the week ahead. We will stay in a northwesterly flow aloft
for much of the week,
and this means a couple of reinforcing shots of cool air will ship in
later. One such shot will arrive with little to no fanfare Monday
night, knocking a couple of degrees off Tuesday highs. We will edge
back up to near 60 on Wednesday and Thursday before another fresh
supply of cooler air arrives during the day on Thursday. This will
set the stage for possibly the coldest night of the week Thursday
night, when widespread lows in the 20s will be expected.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday looks like a chilly day, with some clouds
and maybe even a little light rain. With thickness values expected to
be on the cold side, there could even be a few snow flurries with
highs in the 40s. Sunday should be sunny and cool.

VOODOOLAND: The GFS keeps hinting at a post Thanksgiving storm
system that could be a factor in the Iron Bowl. Hmmm. Could be a
heavy rain producer. Could lead to severe weather. Could be gone by
the next run. That's why we call it voodooland.

TROPICS: The Atlantic tropical season may be just about over. No
disturbances of note across the Atlantic, Caribbean or Gulf. The
global models don't depict any development over the next two weeks
either, and this will just about take us out of the official season,
which ends on November 30.

TORNADO FATALITY UPDATE: The two fatalities reported in the North
Carolina tornado early Friday morning moved the tornado fatality count
for 2008 to 125. This makes 2008 the tenth deadliest year for
tornadoes in U.S. history.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: A continuation of previous day's severe
weather outbreak produced 22 tornadoes from Virginia to New York
State. At 12:05pm, a straight-line wind gust blew down the cafeteria
wall at the East Oldenham Elementary School near Newburg NY. Nine
students were killed. In official records, the storm is listed as
weak tornado, making it the deadliest tornado in New York history,
even though it really was not a tornado. A lady was killed in
Manhattan when an I-beam was blown from a 21 story building.

Lots of folks awakened to the sound of roaring winds during the pre-
dawn hours across Central Alabama as a powerful cold front arrived.
Winds gusted to 31 mph at the Birmingham Airport, 37 mph at the
Bessemer Airport and 42 mph at Montgomery. Trees and power lines were
reported down across Lamar and Pickens Counties just before midnight.
Strong winds have continued through the day, averaging 10-20 mph and
occasionally gusting over 25 mph. Lake wind advisories are in effect
through tonight.

COLDER TREND: Much colder air aloft was providing a very typical post
frontal scenario across Alabama this afternoon. The colder air aloft
was allowing just enough instability to produce distinctive
stratocumulus clouds and popcorn showers. Intermixed in all of that
was a little dapple of sunshine here and there. Skies will gradually
clear tonight with clear skies expected by morning. Lows tonight will
drop into the lower and middle 30s. Northwest Alabama locations could
be a little lower. Sunday will be a brilliantly clear day with cool
temperatures around 50 degrees and a cool northerly breeze. A few
spots won't get out of the 40s. We will be flirting with a light
freeze over the next five nights, and Sunday night will be no
exception. Sunny skies will prevail on Monday and temperatures will
moderate back to around 60. But this will be short lived as another
shot of cooler air arrives Monday night and Tuesday highs may struggle
to get out of the 40s again. The coldest morning may be Wednesday
morning, with lows in the 20s. Another reinforcing shot will arrive
on Thursday. Dry conditions will prevail for the foreseeable future.
The idea of a powerful storm system in here in still on the table for
the day after Thanksgiving. But that is…that's right…voodooland!

SMOKY MOUNTAIN SNOWS: Moisture rotating around the strong surface low
over the Northeast U.S. will produce some snow tonight over eastern
Tennessee, western North Carolina and southwestern Virginia. Flurries
are forecast for Nashville. Cookeville is expecting snow showers. A
mix of rain and snow will fall in the Tri-Cities. In the higher
elevations of northeast Tennessee and SW Virginia in places like
Mountain City, a winter weather advisory is in effect for 1-3 inches
of snow above 2,500 feet. Spruce Pine and Cherokee are expecting up to
an inch. 1-5 inches is expected aboe 2,500 feet around Gatlinburg.

TORNADO FATALITIES LAST NIGHT: This same storm system brought deadly
tornadoes to northeastern North Carolina overnight. A strong warm
front lifted into eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia
after midnight. A strong mesovortex produced significant tornadoes in
an area 25 miles to the south and southeast of Raleigh. At 2:28 a.m.
EST, a tornado warning was issued by the NWS Raleigh. A tornado was
reported near Dunn 10 minutes later. At 3 a.m. EST, the tornado was
just southeast of Smithfield, where damage was reported. The town of
Kinly, on I-95, was mentioned in the original warning text at 2:28
a.m. The tornado hit there at 3:10 a.m. Tragically, there was a
fatality in Kenly. Damage was reported at Lucana ten minutes later.
Finally, another fatality occurred near Elm City in Wilson County. A
tornado watch is in effect across the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon as
the strong storm system and associated instability in the warm sector
creates the threat for tornadoes and damaging winds.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: An outbreak of tornadoes across the Deep South
was the result of an unusually intense low pressure system near
Memphis, Tennessee. An early morning tornado near Hattiesburg, MS was
rated as an F3. Several tornadoes were reported across South Central
and Southeast Alabama, including one at Pintlala, south of
Montgomery. This same storm apparently caused damage near Taylor Road
in East Montgomery. Brundidge was also hard hit. A water tower
collapsed there and a fire station was flattened.

...Blustery Saturday...

Today will be a cold and blustery day across Central Alabama, in the
wake of last night's strong cold front. Temperatures today will hold
steady or fall slowly throughout the day. We had been optimistic that
skies would clear for the I-20 corridor and points south, but now that
looks unlikely. Some clearing will commence from west to east late
this afternoon. There will also be patches of very light rain moving
across the area from time to time, especially over northern sections.

TRENDING TO COOLER: Cooler is the weather word for the next two
weeks across Alabama and the Deep South. In fact, we will be close to
freezing on most mornings this week. With strong cold air advection,
temperatures will fall into the middle 30s on average by Sunday
morning. A few spots over Northwest Alabama will reach freezing
tonight. Skies should clear by daybreak. Despite sunshine on
Sunday, temperatures may well remain in the 40s in some spots. Most
locations should be in the 50s however. A reinforcing shot of cold
air will arrive Monday night, and look for a pretty decent freeze well
into Central sections Tuesday morning and into South Alabama Wednesday
morning. Dry conditions should prevail through much of the week
ahead. Our next big chance of rain will come on the Friday after
Thanksgiving when the GFS shows a monster storm system bringing the
potential for severe weather. It might be a storm to watch.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: This morning, the University of Georgia will be at
Auburn for an early kick off at 11:30 a.m. and televised by Raycon. It
should be partly sunny with about 50 at kick off and peaking near 53
during the game. Brisk, northwest winds will add a distinct chill.
Over on the opposite side of the state, Mississippi State will be in
Tuscaloosa to play Alabama tomorrow night with a 6:45 p.m. kick off on
ESPN. You will need extra warm clothing. Temperatures will be in the
mid 40s at kick off lowering to near 40 by the end of the game. A
stiff northwest wind will make it feel even colder.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is this morning at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham
International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN
trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000
Alabama storm spotters over the years), and learn from one of the most
brilliant weather researchers in the country, our own Dr. Tim Coleman.
We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends
Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International
Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just
show up, but get there early for a good seat. It will be packed.

ON THIS DATE IN 1989: A powerful F4 tornado dropped from a
thunderstorm over the southern part of Huntsville and roared northeast
with devastating effect. The destructive tornado killed 21 people,
many of them unsuspecting motorists stuck in traffic as the inky black
storm bore down on them. It was a time before Doppler radar and
although the system was well forecast, there was no tornado warning in
effect when the killer touched down. Details today all weekend on the
Alabamawx.com blog.

A BLUSTRY SATURDAY: Significant changes ahead for Alabama over the
weekend. First we have to deal with some occasional showers. Possibly
some thunderstorms mixed in late today and tonight. We believe over
the North half of the state, what few thunderstorms do occur will be
rather tame. The storm prediction center has extreme SE Alabama under
a slight risk later today and overnight.

Our main concern is a significant cold front pushing SE through the
central plains this afternoon and extending from near St. Louis to
Dallas. The front is expected to reach Memphis this evening and come
rolling through central Alabama early tomorrow morning.

That is a strong high pressure system behind the front so look for
some NW winds Saturday occasionally gusting to over 25 mph. It will be
a day when you will need additional warm clothing unless you are James
Spann and myself, who are the warmest natured persons north of the
Equator.

Our most difficult forecast part is when the showers will end.
Originally, we thought we would have all sunshine Saturday with no
rain. Now it appears that the showers will linger for a short time
Saturday morning here in Central Alabama and a little longer over on
the East side of the state. Clouds may persist into the afternoon.

Temperatures will struggle to rise much during the day. In fact, in
places like Mentone, Ft. Payne, Scottsboro, the ol thermometer may not
get any higher than about 48. The temperature will drop to near
freezing Sunday morning and Monday morning. Another fresh supply of
colder air will arrive Tuesday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school playoff games tonight, there
could be some showers involved. On Saturday, Georgia will be at Auburn
for an 11:30 kickoff televised by RayCom. The temperature will be near
50 at kickoff and windy with clearing weather during the game.
Mississippi State will be in Tuscaloosa for a Saturday night game with
Alabama on ESPN. It should be around 48 at kickoff, dropping to 40
before the final whistle and mostly clear.

WHAT IS A WEATHER GEEK: If you looked that up in the dictionary only a
small photograph of Bill Murray. I still plan to do a blog story one
of these days about his avid interest in weather. When I was still in
the NWS, we could look for Bill on Saturdays to hang around our office
at 11 West Oxmoor Road. He has been known to sleep on the floor some
nights during active weather. Another big weather geek is Bill
McMillan, who operates his own weather site at Mountain City, TN.
Mountain City is the highest elevated incorporated town in Tennessee.
It is located in the NE corner of the state. They get an average of 30
inches of snow per year. Bill has issued his winter outlook. He has
called for 40 inches this winder and a slightly colder than average
winter.

STORM ALERT EXTREME: It starts at 9:30am Saturday at the BJCC and
lasts until 3:30pm. No admission. Some great weather training and
information. You also get free admission to the Birmingham
International Auto Show. Quite a treat......

...Turning Much Colder Tomorrow...

RAIN, THEN COLDER: A moist and mild airmass will cover Alabama today,
and with a disturbed southwest flow aloft, we expect a few periods of
rain today as temperatures head up into the low 70s. A few
thunderstorms could be involved this afternoon, but the best chance of
strong to severe storms will come over the southeast part of the state
around Dothan, where the Storm Prediction Center has defined a slight
risk of severe weather later today. We will keep the chance of showers
going tonight, when a cold front will approach the state from the
northwest. Looks like the front will push through the Birmingham area
sometime between midnight tonight and 6:00 tomorrow morning. The
showers should move out of the state early tomorrow.

BLUSTERY SATURDAY: In the wake of the showers, tomorrow will be windy
and sharply colder. Temperatures will struggle to reach the 50 degree
mark with a brisk northwest wind, gusting to 30 mph at times. There is
a chance the clouds could hang tough over the northern third of the
state tomorrow, especially along and north of U.S. 278. Elsewhere, we
will forecast gradual clearing. Even where the sun shines,
temperatures won't recover much due to the steady push of cold air on
those northwest winds.

Temperatures will be near freezing at daybreak Sunday, and another
freeze is possible early Monday. Expect lots of sunshine on Sunday and
Monday as very dry air settles into Alabama. A fresh surge of cool,
dry air arrives on Tuesday of next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school play off games tonight, a good
chance of a shower during the game at most stadiums. The temperature
should fall into the 50s before the game is over. Tomorrow, the
University of Georgia will be at Auburn for an early kick off at 11:30
a.m. and televised by Raycon. It should be partly sunny with about 50
at kick off and peaking near 53 during the game. Brisk, northwest
winds will add a distinct chill. Over on the opposite side of the
state, Mississippi State will be in Tuscaloosa to play Alabama
tomorrow night with a 6:45 p.m. kick off on ESPN. You will need extra
warm clothing. Temperatures will be in the mid 40s at kick off
lowering to near 40 by the end of the game.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is tomorrow at the BJCC during the annual Birmingham
International Auto Show. You will be trained by the best SKYWARN
trainer in the nation, our own Brian Peters (he has trained over 6,000
Alabama storm spotters over the years), and learn from one of the most
brilliant weather researchers in the country, our own Dr. Tim Coleman.
We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends
Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama International
Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to register. Just
show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a packed house
last year!

...A Dreary Day in Alabama...

ALABAMA DISCUSSION: It was not the most pleasant day across Alabama,
with almost no sunshine. The clouds were hanging low, sometimes
obscuring the ridges, and there were patches of drizzle around the
state. Not much rain.

The clouds will hang on tonight. It will be foggy in places with some
intermittent light drizzle and possibly a few showers before daybreak.
It looks like Friday and Friday night will be our best rain day. There
is a decent chance that Central Alabama can get ½ to ¾ of an inch of
rain out of this system. One concern that we will watch out for is
that a big cluster of heavier showers and some thunderstorms will hang
tough near the Gulf Coast. Often that cheats North Alabama from
getting as much rain as normally expected.

There will be a good chance of showers Friday and possibly a
thunderstorm. After that, a pronounced cold front will be entering
West Tennessee and North Mississippi Friday evening. It will sweep
rapidly through Alabama getting all the way down to near Tallahassee
by early Saturday morning. This is a strong high-pressure area behind
the front for so early in the season. We believe that NW winds will be
between 15 and 25 mph Saturday and maybe gusting over 30 on the
ridges. It also looks like clouds will hang tough for part of
Saturday, although the showers should move out early. If the clouds do
not break up until afternoon, there is a good chance that parts of
North Alabama will not warm out of the 40s. We have lowered the high
for the Birmingham area to 49 for Saturday based on that. That may be
a slight stretch, especially if the clouds move out earlier. It is
going to be near freezing when you get up Sunday morning and again
Monday morning, but look for mostly sunshine Sunday and Monday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school play off games Friday night, a good
chance of a shower during the game at most stadiums. The temperature
should fall into the 50s before the game is over. On Saturday, the
University of Georgia will be at Auburn for an early kick off at 11:30
a.m. and televised by Raycon. It should be partly sunny with about 50
at kick off and peaking near 55 during the game. Brisk, NW winds. Over
on the opposite side of the state, Mississippi State will be in
Tuscaloosa to play Alabama Saturday night with a 6:45 p.m. kick off on
ESPN. You will need extra warm clothing. Temperatures will be in the
mid 40s at kick off lowering to near 40 by the end of the game.

GLOBAL ROAMING: If you do not like this cold weather this early in
the season, consider the island of Guam where the high yesterday was
88 and low this morning 79. In contrast, Fairbanks has gone 28
consecutive days with temperatures averaging below normal and it was
the coldest such period on record. Cold temperatures this morning 18
at Saranac Lake, New York and Berlin, New Hampshire and 90 at Alice,
Texas. Coldest in Alaska was 20 below at Northway. There was 14 inches
of new snow at Girwood, Alaska. 6 to 14 inches of snow expected in the
Grand Teton Mountains of NW Wyoming and 4 to 8 inches in Yellowstone
National Park.

...A Few Showers; Then Colder Saturday...

RAIN AMOUNTS STAY LIGHT: We will maintain the chance of showers
through tomorrow, but it looks like rain totals will remain on the
light side statewide. Today, the best chance of showers will come
during the morning hours; any showers this afternoon and tonight
should be rather widely scattered. Then, one more round of showers is
likely tomorrow afternoon and tomorrow night in advance of a cold
front. There could be a little thunder in scattered spots, but
instability values are very limited and severe weather is not
expected. Rain totals through tomorrow night should be around one-half
inch or less.

A CHILLY SATURDAY: We still expect a rather blustery day Saturday; we
will struggle to reach the low 50s even with returning sunshine. An
icy north wind will make it feel colder. Then, we drop well down into
the 30s both Sunday and Monday morning. The incoming cold air is dry,
so there is no chance of rain over the weekend into early next week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school football playoff games tomorrow
night, the sky will be cloudy with a chance of showers during the
games. Temperatures will fall through the 50s. Saturday, Auburn hosts
Georgia at 11:30 (Raycom TV); the sky will become mostly sunny during
the game with a kickoff temperature around 50 degrees. A strong north
wind will gust as high as 30 mph at times. And, Alabama hosts
Mississippi State Saturday night at Bryant-Denny Stadium (6:45 p.m.
kickoff on ESPN); the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature
near 48 degrees, dropping to near 40 by the final whistle. You will
need a warm jacket for this one. And, UAB will be in New Orleans to
take on Tulane at 2:00 p.m. (radio only); we will promise no rain and
a light wind since the game is in the Louisiana Superdome. Outside,
the sky will be sunny with afternoon temperatures in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: We continue to see a deep, cold upper trough forming over
the eastern U.S. toward the end of next week on most computer model
runs; if this is correct that will bring the coldest air so far this
season to Alabama; even some hint of snow flurries around here on
Thursday (November 20, one week from today). The good news is that we
don't see any sign of a severe weather outbreak here for the next 7 to
10 days.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Want to be trained as a storm spotter? Want to
join the ABC 33/40 Skywatcher team? Our annual training event, Storm
Alert Xtreme, is coming up this Saturday November 15 at the BJCC
during the annual Birmingham International Auto Show. You will be
trained by the best SKYWARN trainer in the nation, our own Brian
Peters (he has trained over 6,000 Alabama storm spotters over the
years), and learn from one of the most brilliant weather researchers
in the country, our own Dr. Tim Coleman. We will begin at 9:30, and be
out by 3:30. And, everyone that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free
admission to the Alabama International Auto Show!

...Mild Next Two Days...

A MUCH COOLER WEEKEND: There are some days in this business that we
are sure enough about the forecast that we could almost give you a
written guarantee. There are other days when there are mixed signals
on what is going to happen when. Today is one of those, mainly because
of the timing of the precipitation. But, this is what we think. A
chance of showers tonight and mostly during the morning on Thursday.
For Friday, occasional showers and maybe a thunderstorm with the
better chance during the afternoon and Friday night. On Saturday,
there could be a few leftover showers over on the east side of the
state, however, clouds will be breaking up with windy and colder
weather. Looks like mostly sunshine on Sunday, but a cold early morning.

With the colder air moving in Saturday, NW winds will range between 12
and 25 mph and maybe some stronger gusts on the ridge tops. The wind
should diminish some by Saturday and especially by Saturday night. We
will have specific football forecasts starting with editions tomorrow
morning, but it looks like dry and cool weather for the Auburn/Georgia
game and for the Alabama/Mississippi game. High school play off games
Friday night may still have some showers around.

HOW MUCH RAIN? Let us estimate that it will be ½ to ¾ of an inch
across Central Alabama. It appears that most of that will come early
tomorrow and later Friday.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Some beneficial rain west of Alabama the last two or
three days. This storm system gave Dallas/Ft. Worth almost 4 inches
Monday night and Tuesday morning. In the last 24 hours, Shreveport
reported 2.53 inches. The highest temperature in the good old USA
yesterday was 90 at Alice and McAllen, both in extreme South Texas.
Cold spots this morning: 10 above at Alamosa, Colorado and 11 below at
Arctic Village, Alaska.

STORM ALERT XTREME: That is the title of the annual storm spotter
training and general weather programming special at the BJCC in
downtown Birmingham. Be there early to get a good seat at 9:30. It
lasts until 3:30 with a one-hour break for lunch. This happens right
along with the Birmingham International Auto Show and, if you come to
the Storm Alert Xtreme, you can also go through the auto show without
charge. Brian Peters will give you a refresher course on storm
spotting. You will get to meet not only Brian, but also Ashley Brand,
Jason Simpson, Tim Coleman and the chief, James Spann.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly gets me out very early
every morning for a long walk. I have to be especially cautious when I
open the back door
and go out with her. She is like one of those rodeo bulls just getting
out of the gate and zooming forward at breakneck speed. She almost
pulled me over this morning as we were going up the first part of the
track. She finally slows down, because she turns into the doggie
version of a city inspector. She sat on my desk yesterday afternoon
for nearly an hour enjoying back rubs, belly rubs and neck rubs. She
looked at me so tenderly, like she was trying to say thank you. Life
goes on.

...Wet at Times Through Friday...

OCCASIONAL SHOWERS: An unsettled weather pattern continues across
Alabama through Friday with occasional showers and a few
thunderstorms. Today, the most numerous showers should be over the
northern and western counties of the state, with only widely scattered
showers over East Alabama. Showers will become more numerous statewide
tomorrow, and as the air becomes warmer and more unstable there could
be some thunderstorms involved. We will maintain the chance of showers
and storms on Friday, when a cold front will pass through the state.
Rain totals between now and Friday evening will range from 1 to 2
inches over Northwest Alabama, to about 1/2 inch over the eastern
third of the state. We sure could use the rain; Birmingham now has a
rain deficiency of .26" for 2008.

A COLD CHANGE FOR THE WEEKEND: As the rain moves out Friday night,
much colder air will invade our state over the weekend. Saturday looks
like a blustery day, with an icy north wind and temperatures
struggling to get out of the 40s despite the return of sunshine. We
will drop down into the 30s by Sunday morning, and most places can
expect a freeze by Monday morning of next week.

LONG RANGE: We call anything beyond seven days "voodoo land" because
there is very little skill in a specific forecast, but computer models
have been hinting at another shot of cold air in the November 19-21
time frame, perhaps the coldest air so far this season with some
chance of snow flurries across North Alabama. We will have a better
feel for this by the end of this week.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: More heavy rain yesterday to the west of
Alabama; the total at Shreveport was 2.32". Coldest spot in the nation
yesterday morning was Northway, Alaska with 21 degrees below zero.
Coldest in the continental U.S. was 5 above zero at Land O' Lakes,
Wisconsin. Hottest places yesterday afternoon were Alice and McAllen,
Texas with 90 degrees.

We encourage all of our
Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough
training. We will begin at 9:30, and be out by 3:30. And, everyone
that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama
International Auto Show. There is no admission charge, and no need to
register. Just show up, but get there early for a good seat. We had a
packed house last year.

...Improving Chance of Rain...

RELATIVELY MILD THROUGH FRIDAY: We had some nice cold temperatures
over the last few mornings, but no more of that for a while. Today a
low-pressure system over Kansas and a front over East Texas were
already spreading cloudiness into Alabama. Showers have been scarce
today. The few that occurred were light. The main rain event is still
to our west over Louisiana and East Texas.

Do not look for a great deal of sunshine for the next three days and
there will be an increase in the number of showers. For tomorrow,
occasional showers will be more noticeable during the afternoon and at
night. Probably our better chance will be on Thursday with a good
chance of showers along with some thunderstorms. Scattered showers
also on Friday. Finally, the cold front should sweep through Friday
night and early Saturday bringing sharply cooler temperatures and a
brisk NW wind on Saturday of around 10 to 20 mph. It will be clearing
on Saturday. We will have specific football forecasts beginning in the
Thursday morning edition, but it appears that both the Alabama/
Mississippi State game Saturday night and the Auburn/Georgia game at
11:30 a.m. Saturday will be dry and rather cool.

STORM ALERT XTREME: Be sure and come down to the BJCC Saturday. It
lasts from 9:30 until 3:30; great training; no admission charge and
you do not have to register. It is in conjunction with the Birmingham
International Auto Show and the bonus is that you get free admission
to that also. It is hoped that most or all of the ABC 33/40
Skywatchers will be there. You can also meet Ashley Brand, Jason
Simpson, Tim Coleman, Brian Peters and James Spann—the ABC 33/40
weather staff.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Those thunderstorms yesterday and last night set off
some Flash Flood Warnings in North/Central Texas and there were
several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings as well. At the Dallas/Ft. Worth
Airport (DFW), nearly 4 inches of rain fell in the last 24 hours. Cold
temperatures this morning included 5 above zero at Land O Lakes,
Wisconsin and Watersneet, Michigan. In Alaska, the coldest was 21
below at Northway. In the bitter cold of the North Arctic coast, winds
gusted as high as 68 mph at Barter Island. On the summit in Greenland,
it was 46 below zero this afternoon and it is bitter cold all across
the North Pole into Northern Russia where there were numerous reports
of temperatures 25 to 30 below zero.

MY TINY CORNER OF THEWORLD: I laughed more at Little Miss Molly on
our half-mile walk this morning than I ever have before. Cannot
explain exactly why, because I promised some readers I would not write
about the bathroom habits of Little Miss Molly. But to explain simply,
if another dog in the community has been to the bathroom, Molly
insists on leaving at least a few drops in the same place. It will not
do for her to see another dog going to the bathroom, because she will
fall right behind and do the same. Been catching up with ballgames
with the little lady. Regardless of how many innings we play, never
quite enough, but life goes on.

...Unsettled Weather Ahead...

CLOUDS MOVE IN TODAY: Clouds will increase across Alabama today in
advance of a complex storm system to the west, but the low levels of
the atmosphere remain dry and it looks like most of the daytime hours
will be dry. This bodes well for today's big Veteran's Day parade
downtown Birmingham; just a small risk of a few sprinkles during the
parade with temperatures climbing into the 60s with a mostly cloudy
sky. The chance of showers will slowly increase tonight and tomorrow
as moisture levels improve. The rain won't be continuous or especially
heavy, and the better rain totals will likely be found over the
northwest counties of the state.

THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: The weather remains unsettled on these days as a
southerly flow continues; we will mention a chance of scattered
showers on Thursday as temperatures warm to near 70 degrees. Then, on
Friday, a strong cold front rolls through with potential for another
band of showers and storms. At this time, the instability values look
marginal, so we don't expect a problem with severe storms. Rain totals
for the I-20 corridor (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston) should be
near one-half inch through Friday, but to the northwest places like
Muscle Shoals should see over one inch of rain.

WEEKEND PEEK: The rain will exit Alabama Friday night, and much colder
air rolls in here over the weekend. Temperatures will struggle to
reach the low 50s on Saturday and Sunday with a very chilly north
wind. We will drop down into the mid 30s by daybreak Sunday, with
upper 20s likely by Monday of next week. The cold air
will be very dry and we expect a good supply of sunshine both Saturday
and Sunday. The dry weather will continue into Monday of next week.

NOVEMBER STORMS: Severe thunderstorms erupted across parts of North
Texas and West Kansas yesterday afternoon; a large tornado was
reported on the ground northwest of Johnson City, Kansas. Large hail
fell north of Stephenville, Texas. Flash flooding was reported in the
Dallas/Fort Worth area last night.

Skywatchers to attend this every year; you simply cannot get enough

that attends Storm Alert Xtreme gets free admission to the Alabama

...Showers In Our Future...

MODERATING TEMPERATURES: We are in for a change in weather. This
afternoon a low-pressure area was developing over near where Colorado,
New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma join. It will be moving toward the east
and bringing us a change in weather. A warm front will also start
moving NE from coastal Texas and Louisiana tomorrow. For Alabama,
clouds should start moving in later tonight and it will not be as
cold. Showers will be a little slow about starting, but we should see
some later in the day tomorrow. Our best chance will probably come on
Wednesday when we will have occasional showers and possibly a
thunderstorm. Still a chance for some scattered showers and maybe a
thunderstorm on Thursday and Friday as high temperatures shoot for the
70-degree mark. After that windy and turning sharply cooler on
Saturday and next Sunday should be sunny and cold with lows in the mid
30s.

A FROSTY MORNING: This is a short list of the low temperatures this
morning. It was one of our colder mornings so far and many communities
reported moderate to heavy frost. We have a complete list of these low
temperatures on the Blog:

22 at Broomtown in NE Alabama
23 Cottondale
25 Cedar Bluff, Belle Mina, Scrougout
26 Vinemont, Hamilton, Owens Crossroads
27 Pinson, McCalla, Vigo, Munford, Moulton, Muscadine

ON ANOTHER NOVEMBER 10: It happened on this date in 2002, when a
significant outbreak of tornadoes occurred from Central Mississippi
across parts of North Alabama and Georgia, Tennessee and even some in
Ohio. During that outbreak (which spanned three days), there were 83
tornadoes in 17 states. On Smith Lake, numerous boats were missing and
some destroyed NE of Ardell. Bill Murray will cover this in detail
tonight on our Weather Brains broadcast.

GLOBAL ROAMING: A Tornado Watch was in effect until early this
evening for parts of Central and North/Central Texas. A Slight Risk
for severe thunderstorms is posted for a large part of Central and
East Texas into parts of Southern Oklahoma. Tomorrow that Slight Risk
will be extended eastward into SE Texas and extreme Western Louisiana.
Low temperatures this morning in the USA included 2 above zero at
Bismarck, North Dakota and 21 below at Northway, Alaska. A bit of
weather lore for today: "If the sun goes pale to bed, twill rain
tomorrow it is said." (From China)

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since we have 4 extra people in Molly's
house these days, the noise level has increased appreciably. I think I
detect that Little Miss Molly is not as afraid of thunderstorms as in
earlier years. A most interesting story on the front page of the local
news section of The Birmingham News this morning featuring Bailey, a
golden retriever, in Pinson who was so afraid of storms that he
learned to open the door of the homes of neighbors and jump in their
bathtubs. It was a nice story telling how to deal with cats and dogs
that come under stress from storms. I am afraid of lightning too. Life
goes on.

...Beneficial Rains In Our Future...

Indications are that we will have several bouts of rainfall during the
week ahead, thanks to a southwesterly flow aloft and several
disturbances.

FOR YOUR MONDAY: High pressure centered just to our north is in
control of Alabama's weather this morning. But things will be
changing over the next 24 hours.

ROUND ONE: A developing low over New Mexico will move into Oklahoma
by tomorrow. A frontal system will approach Alabama from the west,
spreading showers into western sections of the state during the day.
The front will stall across the state.

ROUND TWO: The surface low will intensify as it moves into Central
Louisiana by Wednesday morning. An overrunning situation will
develop, brining a good chance of rain and some elevated thunderstorms
to Alabama.

ROUND THREE: We get a bit of a break on Thursday before the next
system rolls in Thursday night. Showers and storms will develop again
as the most powerful of the disturbances swings through the South.
The rain and storms will be with us into Friday.

RAINFALL TOTALS: The rainfall forecast from the NWS calls for 1.5 to
2 inches of rainfall across Central Alabama by Friday night, with an
emphasis on the western
side of the state. Much heavier amounts, on the order of five inches
or more, are predicted to fall to the southwest of Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: Rain should end by Friday evening, with blustery and
cooler conditions on Saturday. There could be a little light rain or
even a flurry over the Tennessee Valley Saturday night late, with much
colder weather for Sunday and Sunday night.

GOODBYE PALOMA: The National Hurricane Center issued the final
advisory on Hurricane Paloma last night as it dissipated over eastern
Cuba. Over 1 million people were evacuated in advance of the
hurricane. Paloma had weakened to a strong category three just before
landfall Saturday afternoon. Storm surge of up to 18 feet was likely
near where the center made landfall.

DROUGHT UPDATE: The bad news is that we didn't experience much in
the way of rainfall this week in Central Alabama. At the Birmingham
Airport, the weekly total was just 0.03 inches. The meager surplus we
currently have at BHM will be gone by tomorrow. Hopefully we will
restore it later in the week. Even though we didn't experience much
rain this week, the drought situation across Alabama did not worsen
this week. Ten percent of the state (the Northeast corner) is in a
drought condition. But, nearly 73 percent is abnormally dry.

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: "The lake it is said never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy" These words were part of a
song entitled "The Wreck of
The Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot that immortalized the
sinking of this ship in a horrible storm on this date in 1975. Twenty
nine crewmen lost their lives on when the big ship went down in the
icy waters of Lake Superior during an intense November storm.

...Active Week Ahead...

After an extended period of benign weather, it seems like we will
actually have some interesting weather to work on during the week
ahead. A series of disturbances will bring an extended chance of rain
to Alabama (hopefully). Today has been beautiful, with lots of
sunshine and blue skies. Highs this afternoon will reach the upper
50s for the most part. A few spots may make it to 60 degrees.

THROUGH MONDAY: High pressure at the surface is centered over
northern Mississippi this afternoon. This high will settle into
southern Tennessee overnight, giving us clear, calm and cold
conditions. Temperatures will drop well into the 30s at most
locations, with a widespread frost expected. A few colder locations
will experience a light freeze. High pressure will still be in charge
on Monday, with plenty of sunshine again and slightly warmer readings
in the 60s. But signs of change are already on the board.

CHANGES AHEAD: A powerful upper trough will be moving out of the
Four Corners region of the West on Monday. Showers and storms will
already be breaking out ahead of this system over Oklahoma and Texas
tonight. The upper system will weaken as it moves out onto the Plains
tomorrow and the system that reaches us on Tuesday will be a shadow of
its former self. Clouds will increase over Alabama Monday night and
showers will move into the state Tuesday morning. But we will remain
in a southwesterly flow, and a series of disturbance will keep us in
rain chances through much of the rest of the week.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: The front from Tuesday is expected to hang
up over Alabama and as a surface low develops to the west, rain will
spread back into Alabama Tuesday night into Wednesday. Meanwhile, a
strong jet stream will energize a trough over the Rockies by late on
Tuesday and this will push a stronger upper trough our way. Rain and
storms should increase ahead of this system. The timing is a little
up in the air, but the best bet looks like late Thursday into Friday.
There could be some strong storms with this system, but it is too
early to tell the extent. Rain should end on Friday, but as a huge
upper low sets up over the Ohio Valley for the weekend, we will deal
with extensive cloudiness. There could even be a little light rain
Friday afternoon. Clearing and breezy conditions are expected for
Saturday with sunshine back by Sunday.

WHERE WERE YOU WHEN THE LIGHTS WENT OUT? An outage on a single
electrical line between Niagara Falls and New York City triggered a
series of failures that blacked out the City of New York at 5:28 p.m.
on this date in 1965. It was like turning off a switch. The only
illumination was coming from the moon and automobile headlights.
Runways at all three New York airports went dark. Traffic came to a
standstill as traffic lights went out. Resolute New Yorkers took the
blackout in stride, some having to walk many miles to get home. There
was an atmosphere or calm and unity in the city, with people sharing
radios, flashlight and candles as they coped with the emergency.
People turned out into the streets, which seemed more like impromptu
street festivals than a disaster. The calm of the 1965 blackout was
nothing like the chaos and rioting that occurred twelve years later in
July 1977 when another major power outage plunged the entire city into
the dark again.

ON THIS DATE IN 1926: Fourteen people were killed in an F4 tornado
that struck a school in La Plata, Maryland around 3 p.m. The tornado
is the deadliest twister in Maryland history and one of only two F4s
to ever strike the state. Interestingly, the other also struck
LaPlata in 2002. The building was lifted, blown into a grove of trees
and destroyed. Debris was found as far as fifty miles away.
