...Wet Week Ahead...

Lots of folks are heading to stadiums across Alabama and the Southeast
today to watch some football. Usually this time of year, we are
cautioning folks to take the sunglasses and sunscreen, wear light
colored clothing, etc. Not today. Clouds and light rain will be the
norm on this second Saturday of the college football season across
Central Alabama.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: Surface observations show a low
pressure system off the Louisiana coast southeast of Lake Charles.
This low will strengthen a bit before it moves ashore into southern
Louisiana. A warm and moist airmass is already in place across the
Deep South, with a northward moving warm front over southern sections
of the area. To the north, strong high pressure is over the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan. Easterly flow around the anticyclone is
drawing some drier air into the northern half of the state. This
complex situation leads to a complex forecast.

FOR TODAY/TONIGHT: Skies will be mostly cloudy with patches of light
rain forming during the day. A large mass of rain ahead of the warm
front will spread northward, reaching Clanton and Auburn by late
afternoon, Tuscaloosa shortly after dark and Birmingham by mid-
evening. Temperatures will warm into the lower 80s this afternoon
with humid upper 60s overnight

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Expect periods of light rain for the UAB game at
Legion Field this afternoon. Tailgaters at the Capstone can expect
a good chance of light rain during the afternoon with rain chances
increasing during the game. Some light rain in Auburn during the
early afternoon, with a better chance of rain beginning about an hour
before kickoff. It won't be heavy rain, but it will be annoying for
'Bama and Auburn fans. Take the rain gear with you for sure.

SUNDAY: Expect rain chances to be high on Sunday as the surface low
meanders up into the Southeast, triggering periods of showers and
storms.

NEXT WEEK: The low remains with us for much of the week ahead,
setting the stage for healthy doses of rain and storms each day.
Rainfall amounts could become quite heavy over the next 7 days,
averaging some 3-5 inches with heavier amounts in some spots.

TROPICS: The remnants of Erika were bringing heavy rains to Puerto
Rico this morning. Conditions unfavorable for redevelop west of the
Cape Verde Islands, the other about 1,400 miles east of the Leewards.
Neither very promising right now.

WEATHERBRAINS: Talking tropics this week with the head of Crown
Weather, Rob Lightbown. The show will be available by late Monday
night at www.WeatherBrains.com or on iTunes. Follow our tweets for
WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THE DATE IN 1944: The destroyer USS Warrington was sunk by the
Great Atlantic Hurricane some 300 miles east of Cape Canaveral FL.
247 men were lost in the tragedy. Follow my weather history tweets on

WET WEEK AHEAD: A disturbance over the western Gulf will spread
copious amounts of moisture into the Deep South and trigger lots of
showers and storms into midweek. Some parts of Alabama could see five
inches of rain or more this week.

TROPICS: Fred is loitering over the eastern Atlantic and not much
change is expected in the near future. In fact, over the weekend, it
will barely move. It is also expected to weaken back to depression
status by tomorrow. It will likely then become a remnant low that will
begin moving westward. There are indications that it may make it as
far as the Bahamas by next weekend, which means it will have to be
watched still. The tropical low that was just east of the Mid-Atlantic
States will weaken and a new low will form to the east, then head out
over the North Atlantic. Look for potential development in the western
Gulf over the weekend. It could involve a tropical depression. The
eventual low will move up into eastern Texas and Louisiana and hang
out, contributing to our wet forecast.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 189: Are there too many warnings? How much human
intervention is there in the forecasting process? What's the latest
safety slogan from the National Weather Service? What's the future of
the National Weather Service? Find out from two veteran Weather

ON THIS DATE IN 1945: Prior to 1954, hurricanes in the Atlantic were
named for ships that encountered the giant whirlwinds, Saints Days or
the locations they visited. On this date, 2nd Lt. Bernard J. Kappler
had the distinction of having a hurricane named after him after he
discovered it during a routine weather reconnaissance mission over the
Caribbean. Kappler's Hurricane would nearly claim the lives of the
airman and his crew the following day.

...A Wet Mid-September...

MORE RAIN ON THE MENU: We have had a variety of showers and
thunderstorms lately and that trend is going to continue for the next
several days. In fact, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday could bring us some
locally heavy rain.

WHY THE INCREASE: A low-pressure area was beginning to develop over
the NW Gulf of Mexico today. Anytime that happens there is almost
always an influx of very moist air northward into Alabama. By late
Saturday, the low should be over SE Texas. It will also start pulling
a stalled front back northward, which almost always spells rain.

There were a lot of showers and thunderstorms around the state
yesterday afternoon and some of those lingered through most of the
night. They were slow-movers and they dumped a lot of rain. Today it
has been slightly different with a west-to-east band of showers and
storms across North/Central Alabama and extending into the NE part of
the state. Since these were slow-movers, the National Weather Service
in Birmingham posted a Flash Flood Warning early this afternoon for
Central Walker County. So far today, well over 2 inches of rain has
fallen at Scrougeout in NE Etowah County and well over 1 inch at
Noccalula Falls.

We think that showers and storms this evening will not be as prevalent
as last night. Scattered ones on Saturday should be mostly afternoon
and evening. Showers and storms will increase on Sunday and continue
that way, at least through Tuesday. Before all this is over, many
areas could receive close to 2 inches of rain.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A lot of high school games tonight. Most of those
kick off around 7:00 or 7:30. We estimate there is about a 25-cent
chance of any stadium getting a shower and the better chance of that
will be during the first half. Temperatures will be in the 70s through
most of the game. In college football, UAB hosts SMU at Legion Field
at 3:00 p.m. Saturday. The temperature should be around 83 at kick off
and drop to the upper 70s for the final whistle. Alabama hosts Florida
International for a 6:00 p.m. kick off. At the same time, Auburn will
be hosting Mississippi State. The weather for both games should be
about the same with temperatures at kick off. The temperature will be
78-80 at kick off and slowly decline into the 70s. There is a chance
of a shower or thunderstorm at any time for both games.

AT THE BEACH: Not a good time for the beach. Showers and
thunderstorms will be prominent along the Alabama coast throughout the
weekend and rain could be heavy at times. The showers and storms will
be widespread over the weekend with high temperatures 85-88.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A new tropical wave has just slid off the West
African coast into the East Pacific. It shows signs of organization
and the potential for
development during the next couple of days. Another low-pressure area
over New Jersey is causing coastal flooding, but should not become a
tropical storm. A large area of disturbed weather is covering much of
the Gulf of Mexico with upper-level winds do not support significant
development. Meanwhile, Hurricane Fred has sustained winds that have
decreased to 80 mph. He could lose his hurricane status later as he
stays way out in the open Atlantic.

FINAL THOUGHTS: In the severe drought area of South Texas, some great
news. Two inches of rain in the last 24 hours at San Antonio and 1.44
at Austin. Brownsville got over 2 inches. That disturbed weather area
along the Atlantic Coast gave Atlantic City 3.84 inches. Coldest
temperatures this morning included 30 at Utica, Montana and 34 at good
old Deadhorse, Alaska.

...Moist Air Going Nowhere...

SHOWERS REMAIN POSSIBLE: Not much change in the overall weather
pattern across Alabama today; a very moist airmass is in place, and
scattered showers and storms will likely develop as the day
progresses. The best chance of a shower or storm will be between 2:00
p.m. and 8:00 p.m., but a few isolated morning showers are certainly
possible. Afternoon highs will be in the low to mid 80s, with a few
peeks of sunshine along the way. The weather tomorrow will be very
similar as there is nothing to sweep out the moisture.

We expect an increase in the coverage of rain and storms later in the
weekend on Sunday as a tropical wave moves inland from the western
Gulf of Mexico. Initially, the heaviest rain with this feature will be
over Louisiana, but it will move in our direction, and it sure look
like rain will be likely into the first two days of next week as the
tropical feature stalls out just west of Alabama. Average rain amounts
of two inches are likely Sunday through Tuesday with heavier totals
possible.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games, there is about a
one in four chance of any one specific stadium having a shower or
thunderstorm, and they will be most likely during the first half of
the games. Temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 70s with a
cloudy sky. Tomorrow, Alabama will host Florida International, and
Auburn hosts Mississippi State. Both of these games feature 6:00 p.m.
kickoffs, and the weather will be very similar at both Jordan-Hare
Stadium, and Bryant-Denny Stadium. The sky will be mostly cloudy with
a passing shower or thunderstorm possible. Temperatures will drop from
near 80 degrees at kickoff to the mid 70s by the fourth quarter. And,
UAB will host SMU at Birmingham's Legion Field tomorrow at 3:00; the
weather will be partly sunny and warm with a shower or thunderstorm
possible. Temperatures will fall the low 80s at kickoff to the upper
70s by the final whistle

TROPICAL WEATHER: We will keep an eye on the disturbed area of weather
over the western Gulf of Mexico; it is unlikely that an organized
tropical storm develops, but the surface low should produce heavy rain
at times this weekend along the upper Texas coast and the Louisiana
coast. That rain will be headed this way by Sunday night and Monday.
And, in the eastern Atlantic, Hurricane Fred is hanging around
longitude 35W and slowly weakening. The system is expected to weaken
into a tropical storm today, and becoming a remnant low by Sunday.
Still far away from land.

ON THIS DATE IN 1961: Hurricane Carla strikes the Texas coast between
Galveston and Corpus Christi, near Port Lavaca. Storm tides reached 10
to 15 feet all along the beaches east of the storm's landfall to
Galveston, 120 miles away. Winds reached 175 mph at Port Lavaca. Carla
was a huge storm, with her circulation affecting the entire Gulf of
Mexico. A massive evacuation preceded the hurricane, holding the death
toll to just 46.

...Scattered Thunderstorms...

A WETTER WEEKEND: We are getting a semi-break from so many showers
and thunderstorms today as compared to the last two days. Yesterday
there were a number of showers and thunderstorms and some communities
got very heavy rain.

We are looking over our shoulder toward the SW and our friend the Gulf
of Mexico. There is a chance that a low-pressure area will be forming
over the NW Gulf by late tomorrow and along the Texas and Louisiana
coast by Saturday morning. It will take its time in moving north, but
it will pull a whole lot more moist air into
Alabama, especially later in the weekend and early next week.

So what does all this mean? There will be some showers and
thunderstorms every day. We believe they will be scattered ones
through Saturday and then becoming more numerous on Sunday and a good
chance for showers and storms on Monday and into Tuesday. We have some
mixed signals from various models on how much rain. The one we are
leaning toward will give us a total of over 1.50 inches through
Sunday. That amount can vary greatly due to the nature of the pesky
thunderstorms.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight and Friday night, the
temperature at kick off should be around 78 and dropping only a few
degrees by the final whistle. There is about a 1 in 4 chance of a
shower or thunderstorm at any given stadium with a better chance
during the first half. That is for both nights. College football on
Saturday has Alabama hosting Florida International for a 6:00 p.m.
kick off. There is a chance of a shower or thunderstorm during the
game with the temperature dropping from 80 at kick off into the 70s.
Very similar weather when Mississippi State visits Auburn also with a
6:00 p.m. kick off. In Birmingham, UAB will host SMU for a 3:00 p.m.
kick off. It should be 83 at kick off and 78 at the final whistle and
also a risk of a shower or thunderstorm during the game.

STOCKPILING THE RAIN: That 1.53 inches of rain at Birmingham Airport
yesterday brought the total for 2009 to 44.56 inches. This is an
excess of 5.75 inches—the best shape we have been in for a long time.
That storm also dumped over 1 inch at Holt and Oliver Dams in the
Tuscaloosa area.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Mr. Fred just does not have it in him. From day
one, he has been a weakling. He briefly flared into a strong
hurricane, but only for a few hours. This afternoon, sustained had
decreased to 100 mph. He is expected to weaken more. He is way out in
the Atlantic with no danger to land and will move erratically
toward the north.

DAYLIGHT UPDATE: Birmingham has now lost 60 minutes of daylight since
the longest days of summer back in late July and early August. That
shows up on our temperatures, of course, with less heating. You may
have already noticed. 91 is the average high for Birmingham in the
hottest part of the summer, but today our average high is 86 and it
will drop 6 more degrees by the end of September. Elsewhere around
North America, it was 23 with light snow at Alert in extreme North
Canada—another hint of the changing season.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Just as I suspected, Little Miss Molly
came home from the beauty shop with little or no chance of a nap. She
was so excited when she recognized the houses on our street. During
the night and this morning, she has slept 13 hours. I have never slept
that long since before I was born. I want to mention today Dave and
Denise Echols. They are frequent readers and they absolutely love dogs
and always have several. One of their favorites named Hershey, a 12-
year old Italian Greyhound, gradually got sicker and sicker. By the
end of August, they decided that she had developed a rapidly growing
incurable cancer in her chest wall. She was finally euthanized. They
went to the vet and sat on the floor with her. The vet did his duty
and Dave and Denise cried and cried.

...Afternoon Showers Still Possible...

WARM, MUGGY DAYS: We are not expecting much change in our weather
through Saturday; warm muggy days with a mix of sun and clouds, and
the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and
thunderstorms. Like recent days, where the storms develop some locally
heavy rain is likely due to their slow movement. Temperatures should
rise into the mid 80s before storms develop.

Later in the weekend, tropical moisture will increase and we expect a
general increase in the number of showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.
The deeper moisture will linger into Monday, when rain and storms are
likely as well. High temperatures will trend downward on Sunday and
Monday due to the clouds and rain.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school football games across Alabama
tonight and tomorrow night, the chance of any one stadium seeing a
shower or thunderstorm is about one in four, and the best chance of a
shower will come during the first half of the games. Kickoff
temperatures should be in the upper 70s, falling slowly into the mid
70s by the fourth quarter.

On Saturday, Alabama will host Florida International at Bryant-Denny
Stadium in Tuscaloosa at 6:00 p.m. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and
there is a chance of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the game.
The temperature will be close to 80 degrees at kickoff, dropping into
the mid to upper 70s by the end of the game. Auburn will also at 6:00
p.m. Saturday against Mississippi State at Jordan-Hare Stadium, with
very similar weather conditions. A shower is possible during the game;
the temperature will fall from near 78 at the kickoff to 75 by the
final whistle. UAB hosts SMU Saturday afternoon (3:00 kickoff); a
thunderstorm is possible with a kickoff temperature close to 83,
dropping into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

FRED IS FAR AWAY: Hurricane Fred reached category three status
yesterday with top winds of 120 mph, but the system remains far away
in the East Atlantic. Fred will move very slowly northward in coming
days, weakening over the weekend over cooler water. Fred won't make
too many headlines as the system remains far from any land area. The
rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet; we do note some of the global
models have tried to develop a surface low in the West Gulf of Mexico
late this weekend; we will be watching for any potential "backyard"
development.

WEDNESDAY'S RAIN: More big downpours across Alabama yesterday
afternoon… the Birmingham Airport reported 1.52", pushing the total
since January 1 to 44.55". That gives us a rain surplus of 5.74" in
2009… not bad at all.

ON THIS DATE IN 1960: Hurricane Donna makes the first of her four
United States landfalls as she crosses the Florida Keys near Marathon
with winds of 140 mph and gusts to 170 mph. The anemometer at
Tavernier was pegged at its maximum of 120 mph for 45 minutes.

...Warm and Humid...

PESKY THUNDERSTORMS: One of these days, maybe in late September and
October, we are going to see a number of days in a row where you will
not feel a drop of rain or even hear any distant thunder. October will
be getting into our driest time of the year traditionally, but in any
one given year the tables may be turned and the weather not act like
it is supposed to. We are not hinting at that for this October.

It sure seems to me, as a casual observer, that we have had more
thunderstorms to argue with this year than in a long, long time. I
have no proof. Maybe I am thunderstorm weary.

Speaking of thunderstorms, there were plenty of them today especially
over the north part of the state. They had the usual sharp lightning,
downpours of rain and strong gusty winds. At one point this afternoon
near Newell in Randolph County, lightning caused a house fire. There
were a number of reports of strong gusty wind this morning and this
afternoon with very heavy downpours of rain. The thunderstorms were
moving toward the east and SE.

NOW WHAT: Not much change in the weather except for possibly the
number of showers and thunderstorms each day. For Thursday we expect
scattered ones to occur mostly during the afternoon. On Friday, they
could occur just about any time. We look for about a 1 in 3 chance on
Saturday and finally it looks like showers and storms will become more
numerous Sunday and Monday.
Meanwhile, temperatures will not be that bad with most highs in the
mid 80s and some fairly comfortable mid and upper 60s at night,
although it will be rather humid.

AT THE BEACH: High temperatures through the weekend mostly between 86
and 89. Some scattered thunderstorms each day, the better chance being
Saturday and Sunday.

IN THE TROPICS: Hurricane Fred now sporting sustained winds of 120
mph, so he is now a Category 3. He was moving NW at 13 mph out in the
open Atlantic. The latest track forecast keeps the center far out in
the Atlantic and well away from the USA.

RANDOM NOTES: That lingering low-pressure system that had a remote
chance of becoming tropical along the mid-Atlantic coast is no longer
a threat. It dumped heavy rain along the mid-Atlantic. At Norfolk, the
total for the last two days was 5.70 inches. Down in South Texas this
morning, 5.50 inches of rain fell between 5:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. at
Bergheim in Kendall County. People in the drought area probably are
giving high fives and jumping up and down. 109 in Death Valley was the
hottest yesterday. Even that area is cooling just a bit. Coldest in
the USA this morning was 23 at Stanley, Idaho. Their final low
yesterday morning was 18, which tied the record for the date.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I cannot tell you how quiet it has been
around the abode of Little Miss Molly today simply because there is no
Little Miss Molly. She is missing in action. Namely, she is spending
the day at the PBS in Argo getting a nice trim, probably her last
short cut for the summer. I feel for her, because one of those big
thunderstorms moved right across the Argo area this afternoon and
Molly was probably shaking like a leaf. I wonder if all the dogs go
berserk at the same time? Molly will smell so good when she gets home
wit the little scarf around her neck. She probably did not sleep a
wink today, so tomorrow will be catch up day. Life goes on.

...Showers Remain Widely Spaced...

09-09-09: Our weather won't change much for the next few days; rather
typical early September weather with no major weather systems to deal
with. No cold fronts, upper troughs, or tropical systems show up on
the maps we see daily; the daily coverage and placement of showers and
storms will be determined by small scale features that are very
difficult to identify. Bottom line is that we will maintain a chance
of widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and
thunderstorms on a daily basis through Friday. Otherwise, look for
partly sunny days, fair nights, and a high mostly in the mid 80s.
WEEKEND PREVIEW: The weather Saturday will be similar to the weather
all week; a mix of sun and clouds with some risk of a passing
afternoon shower or storm in scattered spots, mainly during the
afternoon. But, on Sunday, we expect a general increase in the number
of showers and thunderstorms statewide as moisture increases, and an
upper low over the nation's heartland gets a little closer.

Beyond Sunday, confidence in a specific forecast for the first few
days of next week is low due to conflicting computer model output, but
the latest runs have moved drier air down into North Alabama Monday
and Tuesday of next week.

FOCUS ON FRED: Tropical Storm Fred could be a hurricane by the time
you read this, but the system is way out in the East Atlantic, and
will be moving very slowly northward in coming days over the open
water. Fred is no threat of land, and should stay well to the east of
the U.S. mainland. Too bad there isn't a Tropical Storm Ethel or Wilma
around.

Closer to home, a low pressure center producing gale force winds is
just off the middle Atlantic coast of the U.S.; it is not a classic
tropical system, but will produce gusty winds and occasional rain for
the coast generally from Virginia north to New Jersey.

HIT AND MISS SHOWERS: Yesterday was a classic example of "scattered
afternoon showers and storms" across Alabama. At our SKYCAM site in
downtown Birmingham at the Daniel Building on 20th Street, an early
afternoon thunderstorm dropped 0.94" of rain in about 30 minutes. But,
to the west, our Skywatcher in Bessemer reported only .01". Most
communities did not receive a drop of rain, but the total in
Russellville, in Franklin County, was 2.85". Another downpour over
Huntsville produced an estimated two inches of rain right over the
city, and for a while Madison County was under a flash flood warning.
But, at the Huntsville Airport in the community of Madison, the rain
total yesterday was only .02".

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and
your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and
warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you
will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24
hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed
map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to
set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell
phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...Warm September Afternoons...

CHANCE OF A SHOWER OR STORM DAILY: Scattered thunderstorms developed
early this afternoon, mainly over extreme North Alabama and they were
moving toward the SE. Some of those were dumping locally heavy rain
and lots of lightning. A separate isolated thunderstorm developed
right over downtown Birmingham and it, too, was moving toward the SE.

This type weather may be the norm for the next several days as high
temperatures climb into the upper 80s almost every day. A few spots,
especially in West and South Alabama, may touch the 90-degree mark. It
was 90 yesterday afternoon in Muscle Shoals.
Highs in the upper 80s are close to the average for early September,
so this warmth is not that unusual. We believe nights will still show
us some comfortable temperatures and lows across Central Alabama
average between 64 and 67. Low and mid 60s were fairly common across
North and Central Alabama last night.

As a general rule, the afternoon showers and thunderstorms should be
widely spaced at least through Friday and occurring almost entirely in
the afternoon and early evening. That means that most communities will
stay dry. There may be a slight increase in showers and storms on
Saturday and even more so on Sunday. However, we will cross that
bridge when we get closer.

AT THE BEACH: High temperatures will be in the 86 to 89-degree range
for the next several days. There will be a few thunderstorms each
afternoon except becoming more numerous on Saturday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A persistent low-pressure area was still hanging
out this afternoon on the North Carolina coast, mainly east of the
Outer Banks. It was producing showers and thunderstorms. Upper level
winds are expected to remain unfavourable for tropical development as
it moves slowly NNE. In connection with that low, Norfolk was drenched
with 4.44 inches of rain in the last 24 hours. Way out in the Eastern
Atlantic, Tropical Storm Fred had sustained winds of around 65 mph and
was located 345 miles SW of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands. He
was moving west at 14 and should slowly curve around to the NW and
then north over the next 5 days over the open Atlantic. He is expected
to intensify into a hurricane.

HARD FREEZE: Difficult to believe but the temperature dropped to 19
at Stanley, Idaho nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains this morning. That
qualifies as a hard freeze. In some parts of NW Montana, the ground is
frozen to a depth of 4 inches. Does that mean the Pacific Northwest is
going to have a very cold winter? It absolutely does not mean anything
this early. It is like a football game in the first few minutes of
play. You still do not know who will win the game.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sometimes I get so busy that I pause for
a few minutes and take a break. I go find Little Miss Molly, pick her
up and cuddle with her and talk to her like she is a miniature human.
She almost seems that way. She will look me right in the eye while I
am talking to her as if she understands every word and she can give me
a soft loving look. That melts me, of course, but life goes on.

...Showers Remain Widely Spaced...

ROUTINE EARLY SEPTEMBER WEATHER: A relatively calm weather pattern is
the story for Alabama as we all go back to work after the long Labor
Day holiday weekend. No major upper air features, surface fronts, or
tropical systems to impact the weather through Friday, so the weather
won't change much. Each day we will forecast a partly sunny sky with
the chance of isolated showers and storms, mostly during the afternoon
and evening hours. The chance of any one spot getting wet today is
only about one in eight. Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper
80s, which is about where we should be in early September.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND? We should see a gradual increase in the number
of showers and storms over the weekend, especially on Sunday, as we
become under the influence of an upper air low to the northwest of
Alabama. At this point, however, we don't expect a wash-out. Highs
will back down into the low to mid 80s with the increased cloud cover
and shower activity.

TOPIC: TROPICS: The seventh tropical depression of the Atlantic season
formed yesterday in the far eastern Atlantic not too far from the Cape
Verde Islands; there is a good chance it becomes Tropical Storm Fred
at some point today. The good news is that Fred should not be a
problem for any land mass; it should turn north over the open Atlantic
well before having a chance to impact the Lesser Antilles or the East
Coast of the U.S. Closer to home, a broad area of low pressure is
located near the middle Atlantic coast of the U.S, and it will bring
gusty winds and some rain to the upper Atlantic coast through mid-
week, but it is not expected to become a classic tropical system. For
now the Gulf of Mexico remains rather quiet. We do note, however, a
few global computer model runs have tried to develop a tropical system
in the far western Gulf of Mexico in 6 to 7 days. But, we all know
that is voodoo for now.

After Fred, the next names for storms this year in the Atlantic basin:
Grace, Henri, Ida, Joaquin, Kate, Larry, Mindy, Nicholas, and Odette.
Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms have been named from lists
originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained
and updated by an international committee of the World Meteorological
Organization.

WARMING UP: Warmest spot in Alabama yesterday was Muscle Shoals with
90 degrees. Tuscaloosa trailed with 89. Hottest place in the nation
yesterday was Death Valley, CA with 109. In contrast, Stanley, Idaho,
in the Sawtooth Mountains, had a frosty low of 28 degrees. Coldest
spot in the nation was Gulkana, Alaska with 27 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1974: A weakening Hurricane Carmen makes landfall on
the Louisiana coast. $150 million dollars in damage is reported in
Louisiana. 75,000 people fled low lying areas as the storm approached
and only one storm related fatality was reported.

...Happy Labor Day!...

It has turned out to be a beautiful Labor Day across Alabama with lots
of sunshine, warm temperatures and the typical humid feel that one
would expect here. Satellite pictures show generally fair skies in
the I-20/59 corridor, with cumulus clouds developing over the
Tennessee Valley and a bit more clouds to the south from Demopolis to
Montgomery to Auburn. A few showers were over Southeast Alabama.
Widely scattered showers and storms could develop, this afternoon,
mainly to the south of Birmingham. Temperatures are warming quickly
into the 80s.

THIS WEEK: A warm, humid airmass will cover Alabama for the days
ahead through Friday, giving us only isolated to widely scattered
showers and storms each day. Rain chances will be about 20% each
day. Highs will be in the middle 80s. Lows will be in the middle
60s. Should be perfect weather for the Barons as they start the
Southern League Playoffs Friday.

WEEKEND SNEAK PEEK: Moisture levels will be on the increase, and an
approaching upper trough will increase our rain chances as we head
toward the weekend. Scattered showers and storms will develop on
Saturday, and be more likely on Sunday. The football games could see
a passing shower on Saturday, but we don't expect a washout.

TROPICS: The tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands is one of the
most impressive to move off the African Coast this season. It does
have a circulation and thunderstorm activity, but is not quite
organized enough on satellite for the NHC to classify it at a tropical
depression just yet. It's not far away however, and look for that to
happen later today. It will go on to become Tropical Storm Fred
fairly quickly. Not to be confused with 1979's Frederic, which
devastated the Alabama coast that year on September 12th. Frederic's
name was retired after his category three rampage. This is the F
Storm from the same list however. It should stay east of the islands
and U.S.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: WB 190 featured Jim Stefkovich and John
Gordon from the National Weather Service offices in Birmingham and
Louisville. It was a great show. Download and listen by late tonight

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: The Met Life Blimp (Snoopy and Woodstock), in
town for the Chiefs/Raiders NFL game, broke loose from its moorings at
the Downtown Airport in Kansas City, MO as a strong squall line passed
through the city. The unmanned aircraft could not be tracked on
radar during the storm, which led the FAA to ground or divert all air
traffic in the Kansas City area. The runaway blimp was tracked by
controlled as it floated east for about two hours before landing on a
farm fuel truck in Chillicothe MO, about 60 miles away. The blimp is
equipped with a safety mechanism that releases the craft's helium when
the blimp is unmanned. Wonder who was insuring the farmer's fuel truck?

...Happy Labor Day!...

The Labor Day holiday marks the end of summer for many folks. It is
a day of rest and relaxation. We will be dodging scattered showers
and storms again today as a moist weather pattern continues over
Alabama. But there will also be at least some sunshine, and typical
warmth and humidity. I hope that your backyard celebration, picnic,
lake trip or other holiday activity stays rain free.

TROUGH CITY: This has been the summer of the trough across the Deep
South. General troughing will affect the eastern U.S. for much of the
week ahead. In fact, a couple of upper lows will try to close off
during the week over the Ohio Valley. This will keep Alabama's
weather unsettled. As I mentioned earlier, today will feature
scattered showers and storms, with rain chances around 40%. It looks
like things will be a little drier on Tuesday, with rain chances
falling back a bit. But they will rebound on Wednesday and stay
fairly high from midweek into the weekend. Look for wet and stormy
weather on Sunday moisture pools ahead of a frontal system.

STAR SHOW: It's not too late to catch the Summer Triangle. No,
that's not the latest addition to the ABC Fall Lineup, but a famous
grouping of three stars from three constellations that is nearly
overhead in the early evenings this time of year. Jack Horkheimer
always touts it as the perfect Labor Day tradition. The brightest and
highest is Vega, with the second brightest, Altair, down and to the
right. The third and least bright is Deneb, finishing the triangle to
the left. Let's all see if we can catch the Triangle Monday night.

TROPICS: A low pressure system formed off the South Carolina coast on
Sunday. It will bring heavy rains to the mid-Atlantic region, but
tropical development does not appear likely. The disturbance in the
Central Atlantic between the Cape Verdes and Lesser Antilles is very
disorganized. The next system of interest is the powerful wave that
just moved off the African Coast. It is accompanied by lots of
thunderstorm activity and the NHC believe it has a fairly good chance
of becoming a tropical cyclone in the short run. It could become a
strong hurricane this week, but it should move generally west
northwest on a track that will keep it away from land.

PLAYOFF BASEBALL: Our local AA baseball team, the Birmingham Barons
have consistently had one of the best records in professional baseball
this year and they will put that on the line Thursday and Friday in
the Southern League playoffs at Regions Park. Let's pack the beautiful
stadium.

WEATHERBRAINS EPISODE 190: Tonight, we will be talking all things
National Weather Service with the Meteorologists in Charge at the
National Weather Service offices in Birmingham (Jim Stefkovich) and
Louisville (John Gordon). It will be a fascinating discussion about
hot topics from the greatest weather service in the world. Follow the
show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1974: Residents along the northern Gulf Coast were
scrambling to prepare for the predicted arrival of Hurricane Carmen.
By early morning, Carmen reached Category 4 status with winds of
nearly 150 mph. 75,000 people fled the Louisiana Coast in advance of
the dangerous storm. But cool, dry air is pulled into the hurricane's
circulation and the storm weakens dramatically before making landfall
near Morgan City LA with winds of near 90 mph. Follow my weather
history tweets @wxhistorian.

...Holiday Forecast...

A wet weather pattern continues across Alabama on this Labor Day
weekend, with an upper low near St. Louis keeping a moist upper flow
over Alabama and the Deep South. That means showers and storms remain
in the forecast into the Holiday tomorrow.

SHOWERS AND STORMS: Radars lit up early again this morning as
showers and storms started developing over Northwest Alabama.
Additional showers were over East Alabama. All of the activity was
weakening as we headed toward the noon hour. Some rainfall amounts
included 0.13 in Weaver, 0.04 in Scrougeout and 0.26 inches at
Haleyville. Folsom Field in Cullman/Vinemont picked up 0.16 inches.
Some sunshine was peeking through to the south of the main rain area,
and additional showers and storms will likely form across the area
this afternoon. Be on the lookout for the potential for heavy rain
and lightning.

LOOK AT LABOR DAY: Indications are that tomorrow will look a lot
like today with a very moist and weakly unstable airmass across
Alabama. With a fairly deep trough to our Northwest acting to add
lift, some folks could see a period of extended showers. Some will
not get wet at all. Your chance: about 30-40%. Look for warm and
humid conditions to continue with highs in the middle 80s in the non-
rainy areas, a little cooler where rain falls for a while.

REST OF THE WEEK: Some drier air will work in starting Monday night,
reducing our rain chances as we head toward Tuesday and the rest of
the week. Look for scattered storms each day, with fairly seasonable
temperatures for September.

PLAYFOFF BASEBALL: Did you know that the Birmingham Barons have one
of the two best records in AA Baseball this year? They will be in the
Southern League Playoffs this week, with games at Regions Park
Thursday and Friday. Let's pack the beautiful ballpark in Hoover for
this important series.

TROPICS: The tropical wave about 600 miles west of the Cape Verde
Islands is in a very hostile environment and development does not look
likely in the short run. Still, look for Fred to develop in the
eastern Atlantic this week. No threat to U.S.

QUICK WEATHERBRAINS NOTE: It's National Weather Service Mike Night on
Labor Day as NWS Meteorologists in Charge John Gordon (Louisville) and
our own Jim Stefkovich from BMX come for a lively discourse on all
things Weather Service. We will talk models and forecasts and
warnings and radar and stuff. Got a question or comment for the
guys? email@weatherbrains.com Download and listen starting late
Monday night at www.weatherbrains.com or on iTunes. Follow us on
Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: Tropical Depression Hyacinth is the first
tropical cyclone to strike Southern California since 1939, coming
ashore in Los Angeles county Winds were only 30 mph and no deaths or
serious damage resulted. Boy, they could use another Hyacinth right
now to put out the destructive Station Fire, couldn't they?

...More Rain?...

Well, if you are going to bust a forecast, bust it big time. Two
years ago, we wouldn't have minded over an inch of unexpected rain.
But on a holiday weekend, there were a lot of unhappy and unprepared
folks. Sorry for the ruined Saturday for a lot of you. Will it
happen again today?

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Indications are that the main moisture feed will be
just to the west of Alabama over Mississippi today. Still, it looks
like we will see a fairly good chance of rain today. Areas near the
Mississippi border may see one half inch of rain. Further east, most
spots will average a quarter inch of rain.

LABOR DAY FORECAST: No consensus among the models for Monday. The
GFS shows less rain and a little more sunshine. The NAM is cloudier
and wetter. WE will split the difference and call for a 30-40% chance
of rain on your backyard barbecue, picnic or lake trip. Look for some
sunshine, and warm and humid conditions.
Highs will be in the lower to middle 80s.

REST OF THE WEEK: It looks like things will trend to drier as we head
toward Tuesday and the rest of the week. There will be widely
scattered to scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. Seasonably
warm and humid in the temperature and humidity department. Look for
highs in the middle and upper 80s. Lows will be in the middle 60s.

TROPICS: The tropical wave west of the Cape Verde Islands has been
showing signs of organization, but it is in a very hostile
environment. It could become a tropical cyclone, but the National
Hurricane Center puts the probability fairly low. But the GFS
predicts that it will become Hurricane Fred and spend the next two
weeks wandering the Central Atlantic, no threat to the U.S.

PLAYOFF BASEBALL: Let's pack Regions Park this coming Thursday and
Friday as our Birmingham Barons take the best record in the Southern
League into the playoffs.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: It's National Weather Mike Night on
Labor Day with two NWS MIC's answering lots of hard questions.
Upcoming guests include Rob Lightbown, Les Lemon, Robert Henson, Eve
Gruntfest, Tim Samaras and Gary England. Follow WeatherBrains on
Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900: Weather Bureau forecasters were tracking a
tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico. But they were seriously
mistaken in where they thought it was located. The meteorologists
believed that it had passed over Key West and was headed north-
northeast toward Tampa where it would cross the Florida Peninsula.
They warned stations along the Mid-Atlantic states in places like
North Carolina that they would deal with a tropical storm a couple of
days later. The storm was actually headed toward Texas. In
Galveston, where the storm would make landfall two days later with
devastating results, the weather was clear and hot.
