...More Rain?...

Well, if you are going to bust a forecast, bust it big time. Two
years ago, we wouldn't have minded over an inch of unexpected rain.
But on a holiday weekend, there were a lot of unhappy and unprepared
folks. Sorry for the ruined Saturday for a lot of you. Will it
happen again today?

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Indications are that the main moisture feed will be
just to the west of Alabama over Mississippi today. Still, it looks
like we will see a fairly good chance of rain today. Areas near the
Mississippi border may see one half inch of rain. Further east, most
spots will average a quarter inch of rain.

LABOR DAY FORECAST: No consensus among the models for Monday. The
GFS shows less rain and a little more sunshine. The NAM is cloudier
and wetter. WE will split the difference and call for a 30-40% chance
of rain on your backyard barbecue, picnic or lake trip. Look for some
sunshine, and warm and humid conditions.
Highs will be in the lower to middle 80s.

REST OF THE WEEK: It looks like things will trend to drier as we head
toward Tuesday and the rest of the week. There will be widely
scattered to scattered showers and thunderstorms each day. Seasonably
warm and humid in the temperature and humidity department. Look for
highs in the middle and upper 80s. Lows will be in the middle 60s.

TROPICS: The tropical wave west of the Cape Verde Islands has been
showing signs of organization, but it is in a very hostile
environment. It could become a tropical cyclone, but the National
Hurricane Center puts the probability fairly low. But the GFS
predicts that it will become Hurricane Fred and spend the next two
weeks wandering the Central Atlantic, no threat to the U.S.

PLAYOFF BASEBALL: Let's pack Regions Park this coming Thursday and
Friday as our Birmingham Barons take the best record in the Southern
League into the playoffs.

UPCOMING WEATHERBRAINS GUESTS: It's National Weather Mike Night on
Labor Day with two NWS MIC's answering lots of hard questions.
Upcoming guests include Rob Lightbown, Les Lemon, Robert Henson, Eve
Gruntfest, Tim Samaras and Gary England. Follow WeatherBrains on
Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1900: Weather Bureau forecasters were tracking a
tropical cyclone in the Gulf of Mexico. But they were seriously
mistaken in where they thought it was located. The meteorologists
believed that it had passed over Key West and was headed north-
northeast toward Tampa where it would cross the Florida Peninsula.
They warned stations along the Mid-Atlantic states in places like
North Carolina that they would deal with a tropical storm a couple of
days later. The storm was actually headed toward Texas. In
Galveston, where the storm would make landfall two days later with
devastating results, the weather was clear and hot.
