...No Bitter Cold In Sight...

55-DEGREE WARM UP IN TUSCALOOSA: I am using Tuscaloosa as an
illustration in that headline, but it is the same story all across
Alabama. As recent as Wednesday morning, it was 17 at Tuscaloosa
Airport. By 2:00 this afternoon, it was 72 with brisk SW winds gusting
to 25 mph.
There was a huge variation in temperatures overnight. Southerly winds
had already set in over the western part of the state bringing a
warming trend, but the heavier cold air was still trapped in the
valleys of East Alabama. We had some lows in the mid 20s over in East
Alabama, while it only got down to 45 in Tuscaloosa.

WEEKEND CHANGES: We have had a lot of cold fronts that seemed to like
Alabama in the last several weeks. We had another one pushing down
through Arkansas this afternoon. It will be in Central Alabama by
daybreak and then push on down to the Northern Gulf of Mexico by
tomorrow night. Showers were developing along and ahead of that front
this afternoon. Some of those will reach Central Alabama late tonight.
The showers should continue on Saturday, but ending during the
afternoon. This does not appear to be a big rain event. Probably some
of the more significant amounts could be as high as ½ inch.

Meanwhile, far, far to the northwest, pressure is building over NW
Canada and Eastern Alaska with bitter cold air. There are negotiations
going on between surface weather and winds aloft, but they are not
getting anywhere. Indeed, expectations are that a major upper-level
trough will develop in the West. This is not conducive to the bitter
cold rapidly pushing south like we had earlier in the week. Instead,
we expect our lowest temperatures out of this new front approaching to
be close to freezing Sunday morning. After those showers end Saturday
afternoon, look for dry cool weather Sunday and Monday. We might see a
little rain starting back on Tuesday.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The lowest temperature in the Continental USA this
morning as 20 below zero at Presque Isle and Houlton, both in Northern
Maine. That area had some bitter cold weather about a week ago with
some temperatures around –50 and possibly a new state record. Among
the coldest in Alaska this afternoon was 46 below at Arctic Village.
It is no day to hang out the wash in Delta Junction, Alaska where it
was 5 below zero with wind gusts to 57 mph. Hottest yesterday was 88
at Brownwood, TX.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was the longest and busiest ballgame
ever since we have enjoyed the company of Little Miss Molly. It was a
fast-moving ballgame late last night involving three people—myself,
grandson Alex and Little Miss Molly. Well, one little dog. Most of the
ballgame was over the head of Molly as Alex and I threw the ball all
the way across our living area. Molly would go back and forth all the
way across the living area with tires squealing and looking up to try
to catch the ball. (Tires squealing meant we could hear her claws
digging into the carpet.) I have never seen that little girl so
active. After the game was over, she was wiped out and collapsed for
the rest of the night. She really had a ball (no pun intended). Life
goes on.

...The Warm-Up Continues...

HEADED FOR THE 60s: The big thaw continues today; most Alabama
communities will rise into the mid 60s this afternoon. If we reach our
projected high of 64 today, that will make this the second warmest day
so far in 2009 (our warmest day was on January 6 when the high was
72). The air remains relatively dry, and we expect a partly sunny sky.
Clouds will increase tonight, and a few showers could ease into West
Alabama in advance of an approaching front.

SOME RAIN TOMORROW: That front will bring a few periods of light rain
to the state tomorrow, but with very limited moisture and weak
dynamics, we figure rain totals will be light; mostly in the 1/4 inch
category. Tomorrow night the front will be near U.S. 80, where it will
become nearly stationary for the rest of the weekend. That means the
best chance of rain Sunday will be south of Montgomery, and even in
that part of Alabama rain totals should be light and spotty.
Temperatures will be cooler over the weekend in the wake of the front,
with a high mostly in the low 50s tomorrow and Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: At this time our weather looks generally dry for the first
half of the week. The high will stay in the 50s on Monday and Tuesday,
but warmer air spreads in here on Wednesday and Thursday with highs in
the 60s. A cold front will bring a chance of rain at the end of the
week on Friday (one week from today, January 30).

LONG RANGE THOUGHTS: The upper air pattern will keep any seriously
cold air from invading Alabama during the next 7 to 10 days, but we
note cold air is building again in Alaska and the northwest part of
Canada; Arctic Village, Alaska dropped to 42 degrees below zero, and
computer models are hinting at another Arctic connection for the
eastern U.S. in the February 5 to 15 time frame. Bottom line is that
winter is far from over. In fact, we remind you that our biggest snows
on record here have come in March, and even during the first week of
April. Keep the cold weather gear handy.

STORM ALERT 2009: Just about time to kick off our annual severe
weather awareness tour across Alabama. We will announce the schedule
for Storm Alert 2009 in a few days; we hope you can join us if we will
be in your community this year. This will be the 12th year for the
tour, and expect it to the best year yet!

ON THIS DATE IN 1935: The Blizzard of 1935 dumped a wide swath of snow
from Florida to New England. The snowfall came from two storms that
struck back to back. Snowfalls of one foot or greater were measured in
New York City, Boston and Portland, ME. Fifty-two inches fell at
Winthrop MA. . Thousands of jobless men were hired by the Home Relief
Program and the Federal Relief Administration to shovel snow for 25
cents an hour.

...Take Heart; Warmer Weather Ahead...

GOODBYE TO THE BITTER COLD: Low temperatures tonight will not be near
as cold as the last two nights and a pronounced warming trend will set
in tomorrow. After a high Friday in the mid 60s, daytimes will be
cooler, but not really cold with most highs in the 50s well into next
week. That warming trend will not last very long, because we look for
another cold front to arrive by Saturday. It will keep our daytimes
cool well into next week. On most days our highs will be in the 50s.

Ahead of the front, some showers will arrive at some point Friday
night. We think it will be late at night, possibly even after
midnight. Our better chance of showers will be in the cooler air on
Saturday. By Sunday, the front should be south of our area and
scattered light rain should occur mainly over the south half of the
state.

Let us look at some of the low temperatures around the state this
morning:

12 in Grantley
14 Muscadine, Broomtown, Rock Mills
16 Scrougout
17 McCalla, Centre, Cottondale
18 Munford, Moody, Gadsden
19 Anniston Airport, Vigo
21 Tuscaloosa
24 Birmingham

THE FLORIDA FREEZE: It was 21 this morning at Crestview in North
Florida. Milton and Avon Park had 25. It was 26 in Daytona, Ft.
Walton, 27 in Pensacola, 28 in Melbourne and Orlando.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Looking to the Far Northwest, I am extremely
impressed about how the pressure is building up in NW Canada again and
frigid temperatures are being reported. At Old Crow in the Yukon, it
was 45 below zero and a very high pressure of 31.03 inches. That is
almost 1060mb. When the pressure builds that much it eventually has to
send a big glob of bitter cold southward. USA extremes in the last 24
hours included 89 yesterday afternoon at Santee, California and 42
below zero this morning at Arctic Village, Alaska. It was 6 below at
Lewiston and Houlton, Maine.

A POWERFUL TORNADO: It occurred at Moundville in North Hale County
105 years ago today. It destroyed the town soon after midnight. This
was in 1904 when there was no such things as radar, satellite, storm
spotters, weather radio, not even any radio, and of course, no TV or
cell phones. 37 fatalities and 63 injuries. Amazingly, a north-moving
train came by right after it hit. The engineer raced his train
backward all the way to Akron to telegraph a report.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I made a mistake. My little girl does
not weigh 10 pounds. In fact, she has lost ½ pound and now weighs 8.5.
As predicted, she slept most of yesterday recovering from the day at
the beauty shop, but today she is lively as a bumblebee. I have great
plans for her the rest of this afternoon and evening. I am going to
play ball with her until she begs for the final inning to be over.
Since we had her hair cut, including clearing her face, her eyes look
twice as big. That is bad for me, because now she can boss me around
like a foreman. Life goes on.

...Headed for the 50s Today...

TEMPERATURES TRENDING UPWARD: The very cold Arctic air that has been
over Alabama will finally begin to moderate today; we expect a high in
the 50s this afternoon with a good supply of sunshine. The warming
trend continues tomorrow as we are forecasting highs in the 60s with a
partly sunny sky.

SOME WEEKEND RAIN: Clouds will increase tomorrow night, and we expect
a few periods of light rain on Saturday thanks to a cold front slowly
passing through. With limited moisture and weak dynamics, we figure
rain amounts of around one-quarter of an inch can be expected. With
the rain and a persistent cloud cover, temperatures won't make it past
the mid 50s on Saturday.

The front will stall out somewhere over Central Alabama Saturday
night, and it looks like the most widespread rain Sunday will be over
the southern half of the state. Still, clouds will linger over North
Alabama and we will mention some risk of scattered light rain Sunday
along the I-20 corridor. That chance of scattered light rain will
continue into Monday as the front pushes slowly northward as a warm
front.

Next week, it now looks like our weather will be dry and mild on
Tuesday and Wednesday as the warm front stays north of here; the best
chance of rain on these days should come over Tennessee and Arkansas.
Later in the week, a dynamic storm system is showing up on medium
range computer guidance that has the potential to bring a significant
rain event by Thursday or Friday (January 29-30).

A COLD MONTH: Low temperatures in Birmingham during the last 10 days
averaged 24 degrees. The average low for mid-January is 32. Records
from the Birmingham Airport show a low of 16 yesterday morning and 12
on January 16. Temperatures have been below freezing on 9 out of the
last 10 mornings.

FRIGID FLORIDA: Low temperatures from the Sunshine State yesterday
morning included 22 at Jacksonville and Crestview, 27 at Pamana City,
28 at Destin, 29 at Daytona Beach, and 32 at Daytona Beach. The low at
Miami was a chilly 42; there was even a chill in the air at Key West
where the low was 53.

EXTREMES: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Santee, California
with 89 degrees. Coldest spot was Arctic Village, Alaska with 38 below
zero. Coldest in the continental U.S. was Watertown, New York with 26
below zero.

ON THIS DATE IN 1904: An unseasonable F4 tornado leveled the northern
part of the Hale County town of Moundville just after midnight,
killing thirty seven. The tornado reportedly glowed with a
phosphorescent glow. An engineer on a northbound Great Southern train
saw the destruction right after it occurred, and backed his train
twelve miles in reverse to the town of Akron, where he sent a telegram
for help.

...Way Too Cold...

A STATEWIDE FREEZE: It happened again like it has a number of times
this winter. It was below freezing in Alabama this morning all the way
to the Gulf beaches. So cold, in fact, that the temperature dropped to
23 at Coden. That is as far south in Mobile County as you can go
without jumping into the Gulf of Mexico. It was 20 at Mobile Regional
Airport. We have a long list of low temperatures on the Blog, but here
are some samples:

9 in Hamilton and Camp Hill
11 Scrougout
12 Concord/Hueytown, Muscadine, Haleyville, Gadsden
13 Vernon, Munford, Muscle Shoals, Pinson
14 Cullman Airport, Jasper, Centreville, Sylacauga
16 Birmingham, Anniston, Huntsville
17 Tuscaloosa, Alexander City, Childersburg

OUR LAST 10 DAYS: These stats tell the story and it may reveal why
your heating bill will probably be larger this month. In the third
week of January, the average high for Birmingham is 53 and the average
low 32. In the last 10 days, our average low has been 24 and the
average high only 46. Nine out of the last 10 mornings have been below
freezing, including a low of 12 on the 16th.

FREEZING IN FLORIDA: A Freeze Warning is posted for tonight over
almost all of Florida, even down into the Miami area. This will be a
damaging freeze in the north and central portions. In fact, a Hard
Freeze Warning is posted for the Orlando area where they are expecting
mid 20s tonight. It will drop to around 18 in Tallahassee and about 32
in Miami. This morning it was 30 in Orlando and Daytona, 28 in Ft.
Pierce and 24 in Gainesville and Jacksonville.

SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS: In Great Smoky Mountain National Park and in
the North Carolina mountains, it is winter. On Mt. LeConte it was 8
below zero this morning with 9 inches of snow on the ground. It was 2
below on Newfound Gap with 4 inches. Gatlinburg has 3 inches of snow
on the ground with a low of 8 and Cades Cove should look like a
postcard this morning with 4 inches of snow and a low of 4. Mt.
Mitchell, North Carolina has 5 inches of snow and 2 below zero and
Beech Mountain 7 inches of snow.

GLOBAL ROAMING: Cold air is beginning to build again in Alaska and NW
Canada. 33 below zero this morning at Barrow. In the lower 48, the
coldest is 26 below at Wartertown, New York.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I know my Little Miss Molly like a book.
She knows me, too, and knows exactly how to manipulate me. As
predicted, she has taken naps most of today after a day at the beauty
shop. She sure did smell good when she got home. It is amazing why she
trembles so much en route to the PBS and is calm and collected on the
way home. She can get within a few blocks of our house and recognize
the scenery and her tail goes wagging like a buzz saw. She knows every
house on our street and which ones have a doggy friend and people that
love her. I can no longer call her my 9-pound pal. She now weighs 10
pounds. Life goes on.

...A Warming Trend Begins...

WARMER DAYS AHEAD: While we begin the day with a hard freeze, a
warming trend will begin this afternoon across Alabama as the upper
air pattern becomes flatter across North America. With a good supply
of sunshine today, we are expecting a high in the mid to upper 40s.
Tomorrow will be another sunny day with a high in the mid to upper
50s; then we have a real chance of reaching the low 60s on Friday as a
nice southerly flow kicks in.

Clouds will also begin to return Friday, and will introduce the chance
of showers statewide Friday night. A few showers could move into West
Alabama by Friday afternoon.

WEEKEND FORECAST: The showers we expect Friday night should taper off
Saturday morning, but the clouds will linger most of the day Saturday.
Temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 40s with the clouds and
morning showers. For now, we will maintain a dry forecast on Sunday
with a high in the 50s, but we have seen some hints from recent
computer model data that some light rain could redevelop on Sunday. We
will keep an eye on model trends and make adjustments in the forecast
as needed in coming days.

VOODOO LAND: Looks like a pretty decent rain event is shaping up for
the middle of next week, about 7 to 8 days from now, followed by a
shot of colder air. Another big precipitation event shows up in the
Feb 2-3 time frame, but as we all know there is very little skill in a
specific forecast beyond seven days, so that could change. And, that
is why we call any forecast or outlook beyond seven days "voodoo
country".

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Brutally cold air covered the eastern third of
the U.S. Birmingham's low that morning was six degrees below zero.
Jacksonville, Florida recorded its all-time record low with 7 degrees.
Macon, GA had its coldest day ever with 6. It was the coldest
Inauguration day in history as President Reagan is sworn in for a
second term during cold and wind that resulted in wind chill readings
of -30. Many counties in New York were declared disaster areas,
because of heavy snow.

DID YOU KNOW? Snow cover is very efficient at reflecting sunlight
during the day and radiating heat at night, so very cold temperatures
often occur after a snowfall. When Alabama's all time low temperature
of 27 below zero occurred at New Market (north of Huntsville) on
January 30, 1966 there was 12 inches on the ground. Birmingham reached
2 degrees on the morning after the snow had stopped in the Blizzard of
1993.

...Another Widespread Freeze...

WARMING TREND STARTS TOMORROW: But not before we have another
widespread and substantial freeze tonight. We expect low temperatures
to bottom out close to 20 across Central Alabama. That means some of
the North Alabama valleys will be in the teens. In fact, some outlying
areas around the Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston area will also be
in the upper teens.

The cold front that moved across Alabama in a hurry yesterday moved
off shore into the Gulf. By daybreak tomorrow, a high-pressure area
will be over Alabama. The air is extremely dry, so the wind should be
near calm around daybreak at the coldest time of the day. While the 47
that we have forecast for tomorrow afternoon is not exactly short-
sleeve shirt weather, it does represent the beginning of a warming
trend that will peak on Friday with highs near 60 or a little above.
Meanwhile another cold front will be headed our way and it should
cross the state late Friday night and Saturday morning. We introduce a
chance of showers later Friday and Friday night. Those should be
ending Saturday morning as it turns cooler again.

Numerous North and Central Alabama communities got very excited
yesterday afternoon when some snow flurries occurred. They did not
last long, but by this morning it was well below freezing in many
areas. Some representative lows:

19 Walnut Grove, Muscadine, Scrougout
20 Hamilton
21 Cullman
22 Oxford, Jasper
23 Birmingham, Anniston, Jemison
25 Tuscaloosa, Coker, Livingston, Sylacauga

GLOBAL ROAMING: I bet you have never heard of the Faroe Islands. They
are in the North Sea between Iceland and Norway with a population of
47,000 people. Even though the Islands are very small, there is one
mountain that reaches 2,900 feet. We could almost guarantee that they
have some very interesting weather from major North Atlantic storms.
Even some dying tropical storms can affect that area when they pick up
speed and go into oblivion over the North Atlantic. In the Great Smoky
Mountain National Park, Mt. LeConte had 5 inches of snow this morning
with a low of 3 below zero. Gatlinburg had 19 degrees with 4 inches of
snow. Cities like Raleigh also had a snow cover. USA cold spots this
morning: Grayling, Michigan with 24 below and Hooper Bay, Alaska with
35 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This place seems so empty today because
Little Miss Molly is spending the day at the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop)
in Argo. She not only is getting a trim, but getting caught up on her
shots. She will smell so good when we pick her up and she will be so
glad to get home. Because of the commotion, she does not get to nap at
the PBS, so she will spend a lot of time in the next 24 hours taking
long naps. Although that will give me a break, I will still wake her
up and cuddle and love her occasionally. Life goes on.

...Another Very Cold Winter Day...

COLD IS THE WORD: Yet another very cold Arctic airmass will settle
into Alabama today; temperatures will struggle to reach the mid 30s,
and wind chill index values will be in the teens for much of the day.
We will maintain the chance of a few snow flurries this morning,
generally along and east of I-65.
Look for a hard freeze tonight with a clear sky and diminishing wind;
we are projecting an average low of 20 degrees early tomorrow, but the
actual range will be from around 13 in the coldest valley to near 25
on the ridge tops.

WARMER DAYS: The upper air pattern will change across North America
during the latter half of the week; the persistent upper trough that
has been over the eastern third of the nation will finally lift out,
allowing a nice warming trend for Alabama. We are projecting highs in
the upper 40s tomorrow, upper 50s Thursday, and low 60s on Friday. The
latter half of the week will be dry, although clouds will begin to
increase during the day Friday. We will bring in a chance of showers
Friday night into Saturday morning thanks to a passing cold front;
moisture looks rather limited, and dynamics not overly impressive, so
at this time we are projecting rain amounts of a quarter inch or less.
Most of the showers should be out of the state by the late morning
hours on Saturday.

The front producing those showers will be of Pacific origin and not
Arctic origin, so no really cold air is expected for the rest of the
weekend. Temperatures looks seasonal on Saturday and Sunday, with
highs in the 50s. We should be close to freezing at daybreak Sunday.

AFTERNOON EXCITEMENT YESTERDAY: Snow flurries moved across much of
North Alabama, especially east of I-65, late yesterday. They did not
cause any travel problems, and it was mostly a novelty. A dusting was
reported, however, across the higher terrain of Marshall, DeKalb,
Cherokee, and Jackson counties. Accumulating snow was reported from
East Tennessee eastward through much of North Carolina, where winter
weather advisories were in effect. Six inches of wet snow was reported
at Gatlinburg. Snow amounts of 4 to 6 inches were expected last night
through parts of North Carolina. A few snow flakes were expected as
far south on the coast as Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. To the north,
two inches were possible in Wilmington, NC.

ON THIS DATE IN 1937: Wettest Inaugural Day on record: 1.77 inches of
rain fell in Washington with temperatures in the 30s as Franklin
Roosevelt is inaugurated.

EXTREMES: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Atqasuk, Alaska
with 27 degrees below zero. Coldest in the lower 48 was International
Falls, Minnesota with 17 degrees below zero. Warmest place yesterday
afternoon was Edinburg, Texas with 88 degrees.

...More Cold Air Invading Alabama..

WHO LEFT THE FRONT DOOR OPEN: Someone did, because here we go with
another invasion of cold arctic air from the Far North. It was moving
in quickly this afternoon. Upper air charts show that there is no
interference all the way into Northern Canada for the south-moving
arctic air.
The good news is that we do not expect exceptionally low temperatures
like we had over the weekend where at least one location in NE Alabama
had a low near 10.

As this cold air pours southward this afternoon, snow flurries were
developing over East Tennessee and even into North Alabama. A few
flurries have been reported over NW Alabama. The National Weather
Service in Huntsville cautions that as much as ½ inch could
accumulate, especially in the higher terrain of NE Madison County,
Jackson County and Northern DeKalb County where temperatures had
already dropped to freezing this afternoon.
Further south over North and Central Alabama, only flurries are
expected. You may see a few small flakes even as far south as
Tuscaloosa, Birmingham and Anniston. No accumulation.

By daybreak, we will be back where we do not want to be with
temperatures in the mid 20s. Brisk NW winds will continue Tuesday with
highs not getting out of the 30s and we expect a low of 22 for Tuesday
night and Wednesday morning. After that a warming trend getting up to
near 60 by Thursday and Friday. Next chance of showers will be later
in the day Friday but more so Friday night and Saturday morning. We do
not believe this will be a big rain event.

INAUGURATION WEATHER: In Washington, the temperature will drop to
around 25 tonight with a high tomorrow only near freezing. North wind
will gust to 25 mph at times and there could be a few flurries.

SPOKANE UPDATE: That Eastern Washington city has become our poster
city to check on this winter because of snow. Their total so far this
season—an
astounding 80 inches. The average by January 19 is only 29 inches.
Their good news is the snow has melted down to only 2 inches on the
ground this morning.

ROAMING OVER NORTH AMERICA: Up to 4 inches of snow tonight over NE
Tennessee around Johnson City, Kingsport and Bristol and as much as 8
inches at Roan Mountain and Mountain City. There will also be snow in
both of the Carolinas. The coldest in Alaska this morning was 24 below
at Atqasuk. An all-time January rain event at Yakutak in Western
Alaska Sunday with 7.44 inches.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Every morning during our recent severely
cold weather my little 9-pound pal, better known as Little Miss Molly,
had me out by the crack of dawn for a walk. It was very comfortable
outside this morning and, would you believe she slept until 10:00. I
did not mind. So busy over the weekend that I cannot remember but one
short ballgame with her. She is very patient about that, but if I do
not play with her, she will gather some balls and play by herself
racing through the house and bouncing off of the couch and recliner.
Life goes on.

...Cold Not Finished...

Temperatures warmed nicely on Sunday as skies cleared quickly behind a
cold front. With lots of sunshine, readings warmed into the middle 50s
to lower 60s. But the cold weather is not through with us yet.

TODAY'S WEATHER: Another shot of cold air will swing our way later
today as winds shift from westerly to northwesterly and northerly.
There could be a few snow flurries today as the colder air arrives.
Moisture will be in short supply, and any snow that falls will be
spotty and very light. Highs will top out in the middle 40s. Tonight
will feature mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the middle and
upper 20s by morning along with a chilly north wind.

TUESDAY FLURRIES: Another upper level disturbance will pass on
Tuesday. It will be even more moisture starved that today's system,
but since it is stronger, it will manage to squeeze out a few snow
flurries. Again, amounts will be light and no problems are
anticipated. Tuesday will feature blustery, very cold conditions,
with highs hovering in the 30s and a chill north wind.

HARD FREEZE TUESDAY NIGHT: Another strong surge of cold air will
bring another borderline hard freeze to Alabama Tuesday night. By
Wednesday morning, lows will drop into the lower and middle 20s across
Central Alabama. Precautions will need to be taken for the cold
weather.

MODERATION BEGINS WEDNESDAY: Everything is relative. Wednesday's
temperatures will be about 10-15 degrees warmer than Tuesday. But it
will still be chilly, with highs in the upper 40s and mostly sunny
skies. We are back near freezing Wednesday night. Thursday will see
a real warm up and an upper ridge moves over us and surface high
pressure to our south slides over to Florida. This will allow a deep
southerly flow to begin. We will enjoy a nice day on Thursday with a
good supply of sunshine and temperatures warming to near 60 degrees.
That will feel very nice.

NEXT WET WEATHER SYSTEM: An approaching disturbance will weaken as
it moves toward Alabama on Friday. Clouds will be on the increase and
showers will arrive in western sections late in the day. It appears
that showers will move slowly eastward across the state Friday night
into early Saturday. A recent run of the GFS model keeps the frontal
system stalled across Alabama on Saturday into Sunday, keeping wet
weather in the neighborhood for much of the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Organizers of the annual Flake Out Festival at
Wisconsin Dells were missing the most important part of their
anowsculpture competition: the snow. With no snow on the ground and
none forecast, snow making guns had to be brought in from a nearby
resort. Other winter festivals across the Upper Midwest were in the
same boat as an unusually snowless winter presented a big challenge.
The Run on Water race at Bayfield, WI was in danger of being cancelled
as ice conditions were not solid enough on the lake.

...More Cold Ahead...

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: On the weather maps this morning, we find an
extremely amplified long wave pattern over the United States. The
long wave pattern is the flow in the river of air above the Earth's
surface. Sometimes it is rather flat, moving from west to east. We
call that a zonal flow. It usually results in fairly seasonable
weather. Most times, there are a series of troughs and ridges in the
wave pattern. When those troughs and ridges become very large, we say
the wave pattern is very amplified. Ridges bring warm air northward
from the Equator. Troughs bring cold air southward from the poles.

The pattern today is about as amplified as you ever see. The ridge
in the West extends all the way up into western Canada. The eastern
trough extends all the way down to Cuba. It is anchored by a large
upper low over the Great Lakes region. At the surface, a cold front
was pushing through South Central Alabama this afternoon. It is
delivering another shot of reinforcing cold air. Occasionally, little
ripples in the flow will rotate out of the upper low and swing through
in the flow, producing clouds and shaking out a little precipitation.

WINTRY PRECIPITATION? The atmospheric temperature profiles will be
cold enough to support snow across the northern half of Alabama over
the next couple of days. The limiting factor will be moisture
availability. The first disturbance will swing through tonight and
Monday morning, perhaps squeezing out a little light snow. Monday
will feature a mix of clouds and some sun, with cool temperatures in
the 40s. Another disturbance will push through the state Monday
night, and will produce additional periods of light snow. Road and
exposed surfaces are very cold because of the deep cold that we have
been experiencing, so any snow that does fall will not have a hard
time sticking. But again, amounts will be light and accumulations, if
any, will be small. Lows Monday night will be in the 20s. Tuesday
will feature clearing skies with a blustery northwest winds and
temperatures hovering in the 30s.

REST OF THE WEEK: Wednesday morning will start off very cold with a
hard freeze possible. Readings will drop well into the lower 20s
across Central Alabama with the normally colder spots in North Alabama
in the teens. By Wednesday, it looks like we will still be in a
northwesterly flow aloft, and this will keep us chilly. Wednesday
highs will be in the 40s. The real moderation will start on
Thursday. After a morning low in the upper 20s, temperatures will
warm to near 60 as a ridge moves overhead and southerly wind kick in
ahead of the next system. Clouds will increase late in the day and
showers should arrive in western sections of the state after
midnight. A cold front will push through during the day Friday,
preceded by a band of showers.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: The roof of the Hartford Coliseum in Hartford,
CT collapsed during the early morning hours under four and one half
inches of snow and ice from a winter storm. The arena had just played
host to a basketball game a few hours before and fortunately was
empty. The arena was lauded as one of the first large span roof
buildings developed using computer to aid in the design. The computer
permitted a serious design flaw that led to the collapse.

...Mostly Cloudy Today...

A cold front is pushing southeastward across Alabama on this January
Sunday. This front will be into South Alabama by early afternoon.
Rain is ending fairly quickly behind the front, with just a few
lingering showers over eastern sections of the state. Most areas will
see a little sun this afternoon, but highs should top out in the 40s.

TONIGHT: A little spoke of vorticity will rotate through Alabama
tonight, perhaps squeezing some a few sprinkles or snow flurries
across the northern half of the state. There should be no problems.
Temperatures will drop to near 30 degrees.

START TO THE NEW WEEK: Monday should dawn gray. Skies will clear
during the day, but readings will only make it into the lower 40s. A
strong upper
level disturbance will develop in the northwesterly flow to our
northwest. It will sweep southeastward toward the state, bringing the
chance of a little light rain or light rain/snow mix Monday night. It
will be accompanied by a strong northerly flow that will reinforce the
cold temperatures and drop overnight readings well into the 20s
overnight. Tuesday will be very chilly, with highs only in the 30s,
despite clearing skies. Look for a cold night Tuesday night, with a
freeze all the way to the Gulf Coast. In Central Alabama, lows will
be in the lower and middle 20s. Normally colder spots may reach the
teens.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: Wednesday will feature sunshine and milder
temperatures as high pressure along the Gulf Coast pushes eastward and
our winds gradually become southerly again. Look for highs around 50
degrees. At the same time, the strong western U.S. ridge will de-
amplify and move eastward. This will mean a decent warm up by
Thursday, when highs should be back in the upper 50s. But another
shortwave trough will be pressing eastward into the Texas Panhandle by
Thursday night. We will see a quick return of moisture on Thursday
ahead of this system. Clouds will increase late in the day with rain
returning by Friday morning. A strong cold front will push slowly
southeastward on Friday, pushing an area of rain ahead of it.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: Saturday should feature clearing skies, but it will
be a bit blustery with highs in the 40s again. Look for a decent
freeze Saturday night and a nice warm up on Sunday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2006: A cold front that arrived during morning rush
hour in metro New York City produced winds as high as 68 mph in the
Bronx. The high winds wreaked havoc with the morning commute, felling
trees onto rail lines, bringing many trains to a halt. Traffic had to
be suspended on the upper level of the Verrazano Narrows bridge and
truck traffic had to be suspended on the George Washington Bridge.
The resulting traffic snarls delayed commuters all over the city.
Pedestrians were knocked down on city streets.
