...More Cold Ahead...

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: On the weather maps this morning, we find an
extremely amplified long wave pattern over the United States. The
long wave pattern is the flow in the river of air above the Earth's
surface. Sometimes it is rather flat, moving from west to east. We
call that a zonal flow. It usually results in fairly seasonable
weather. Most times, there are a series of troughs and ridges in the
wave pattern. When those troughs and ridges become very large, we say
the wave pattern is very amplified. Ridges bring warm air northward
from the Equator. Troughs bring cold air southward from the poles.

The pattern today is about as amplified as you ever see. The ridge
in the West extends all the way up into western Canada. The eastern
trough extends all the way down to Cuba. It is anchored by a large
upper low over the Great Lakes region. At the surface, a cold front
was pushing through South Central Alabama this afternoon. It is
delivering another shot of reinforcing cold air. Occasionally, little
ripples in the flow will rotate out of the upper low and swing through
in the flow, producing clouds and shaking out a little precipitation.

WINTRY PRECIPITATION? The atmospheric temperature profiles will be
cold enough to support snow across the northern half of Alabama over
the next couple of days. The limiting factor will be moisture
availability. The first disturbance will swing through tonight and
Monday morning, perhaps squeezing out a little light snow. Monday
will feature a mix of clouds and some sun, with cool temperatures in
the 40s. Another disturbance will push through the state Monday
night, and will produce additional periods of light snow. Road and
exposed surfaces are very cold because of the deep cold that we have
been experiencing, so any snow that does fall will not have a hard
time sticking. But again, amounts will be light and accumulations, if
any, will be small. Lows Monday night will be in the 20s. Tuesday
will feature clearing skies with a blustery northwest winds and
temperatures hovering in the 30s.

REST OF THE WEEK: Wednesday morning will start off very cold with a
hard freeze possible. Readings will drop well into the lower 20s
across Central Alabama with the normally colder spots in North Alabama
in the teens. By Wednesday, it looks like we will still be in a
northwesterly flow aloft, and this will keep us chilly. Wednesday
highs will be in the 40s. The real moderation will start on
Thursday. After a morning low in the upper 20s, temperatures will
warm to near 60 as a ridge moves overhead and southerly wind kick in
ahead of the next system. Clouds will increase late in the day and
showers should arrive in western sections of the state after
midnight. A cold front will push through during the day Friday,
preceded by a band of showers.

ON THIS DATE IN 1978: The roof of the Hartford Coliseum in Hartford,
CT collapsed during the early morning hours under four and one half
inches of snow and ice from a winter storm. The arena had just played
host to a basketball game a few hours before and fortunately was
empty. The arena was lauded as one of the first large span roof
buildings developed using computer to aid in the design. The computer
permitted a serious design flaw that led to the collapse.
