ABC 33/40 E-FORECAST
Afternoon Edition For Saturday July 22, 2006
==================================================================
WANTED: ARBORIST
PAY AND BENEFITS: EXCELLENT

Do you have work experience in tree care operations such as climbing and
planting trees, trimming and removing tree limbs? We need you in Civil
Service!

Excellent Pay and Benefits!

For more about this position and many others, go to
http://www.jobsquest.org, the official recruiting site for the Personnel
Board of Jefferson County; recruiting the Best and the Brightest for Civil
Service for 24 cities, agencies, and jurisdictions in Jefferson County,
Alabama.
==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: Some much needed relief in the form of showers and storms
is underway across Alabama ahead of a cold front on this Saturday afternoon.
The cold front will bring an end to the excessive heat of the past few days
with more seasonable temperatures expected for much of the coming week.
Don’t look for any fall chill, but it will be better than it has been.

SEVERE STORMS: With a primed air mass in place across the area providing
the fuel and a fairly decent cold front providing the spark, storms are
firing across the area. Morning sunshine has warmed temperatures into the
90s in many locations, and moisture levels are high with dew points in the
70s, so the air mass is certainly high octane. This will lead to the threat
for severe thunderstorms through the afternoon and into the evening, with
damaging winds the biggest threat. Some hail is also possible with the
larger storms, and don’t forget summer’s killer: deadly lightning. Heavy
rains may also fall in a short time due to the juicy atmosphere, so watch
out for localized flooding.

FRONTAL SYSTEM: As you would expect, the summer cold front is the wild
card in our forecast. Summer fronts are always fighting a battle to make it
very far into the Deep South this time of year. This front is taking
advantage of a door left open by the ridge of high pressure that is breaking
down over the Southeast. It is being replaced by a trough of low pressure
in the upper atmosphere that is digging its way down our way. Hence the
open door for the front. The front will push slowly across the area and
likely stall somewhere south of Birmingham.
North Alabama should get in on some drier air (not that that is a good
thing.) But they will experience some lower humidities and sunny skies
tomorrow. Just who gets in on the drier air is up to the front. Most of
the showers and storm activity should be across Central Alabama, south of
Birmingham tomorrow. The front will gradually wash out Monday and Tuesday
and a ridge of high pressure will build in. We experience scattered
afternoon and evening storms through much of the coming week. Temperatures
should be closer to normal for this time of year.

GOING TROPICAL: Nothing to report as the tropical Atlantic remains quiet
in the wake of Beryl.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: People in Phoenix downplay the extreme heat that they
live with during the summer months each year by reminding visitors that it
is a dry heat. Indeed, the heat is a small price to pay for the city’s
scenic beauty and delightful weather most of the year. When the mercury
soared to a broiling 117°F on July 21st, it was just a few degrees short of
the all-time record for Phoenix (122°F.) The overnight temperature the next
morning could only manage to fall to 96°F, setting the all-time record warm
low reading for the city. It was all part of the warmest month ever
recorded in Phoenix (97.7°F.)

MORE PHOENIX HEAT: One year ago today, shelters had to open in the daytime
in Phoenix for homeless people after 18 people died during a massive heat
wave across the Southwest.

...Hazy Sun; A Few Storms...

This is a new day, but we have an old forecast. Hot with hazy sunshine, and
a few scattered afternoon storms. The mercury should peak somewhere between
95 and 100 for most communities, and the chance of any one spot getting a
storm today is about one in four. Like yesterday, the storms that do form
will be strong with some potential for high wind and small hail. All summer
storms contain wicked cloud to ground lightning that is so dangerous.

COOLER DAYS: We still believe a significant weather change is ahead for
Alabama this weekend. An upper air trough will develop over the eastern part
of the nation, and will push a surface front down to near the
Alabama/Tennessee border by Saturday evening. This should mean an increase
in the number of showers and storms over the weekend, with cooler daytime
temperatures due to the clouds and showers. Some communities will fail to
reach the 90 degree mark on both Saturday and Sunday, a welcomed break from
the sizzling heat in recent days.

Showers and storms should remain active into early next week as the front
slowly loses its identity over North Alabama.

BERYL UPDATE: Tropical storm Beryl will pass just east of Cape Cod today on
the journey northeastward into the North Atlantic. The rest of the Atlantic
basin is quiet.

STORMS OF SUMMER: There was major structural damage in Sumiton yesterday due
to a wet microburst from a "pop-up" thunderstorm. Wind damage was also
reported from storms near Good Hope, Childersburg, Alexandria, and around
Birmingham's south side. Lightning was responsible for a house fire in the
western part of Hoover just off South Shades Crest road.

=========================================

THE BOOM-BOOM OF THUNDER: Not everybody getting rain again this
afternoon, but for the last several days the thunderstorms that have
formed across the state were unusually noisy like numerous drums in a
high school or college band. This means the storms are overloaded with
lightning. That alone makes them extremely dangerous and for the 8th
zillionth time we highly recommend that you scurry inside when you
first hear thunder.

Several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were posted across the state
this afternoon. Most of the storms that did form produced locally
heavy amounts of rain. Last night there was some wind damage across NW
Alabama from thunderstorms in places like Fayette, Millport and near
Haleyville. We may hear some more isolated damage reports this
afternoon. Some folks got over 2 inches of rain last night and a storm
yesterday afternoon dumped 2.40 inches at Mount Olive in North
Jefferson County.

ENOUGH OF THIS HOT WEATHER: We are all fed up with it, but we cannot
say goodbye at least through Friday. There are increasing indications,
however, that the old thermometer will become more rational beginning
Saturday and through the weekend and early next week. This is due to a
weak frontal boundary that is expected to drift down into North
Alabama and stall. An upper level trough will carve out over the east
and the heat ridge will retreat to the west. What does all this mean?
It means our high temperatures will back off to the upper 80s or near
90 starting Saturday and through at least next Tuesday.

Thunderstorms again Thursday and most of Friday should be widely
separated, but there will be an increase in thunderstorm activity
starting Saturday and extending into early next week. I can hear
people all over the state cheering.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Beryl was a little stronger this
afternoon, but the Tropical Storm Watch for the eastern coast of North
Carolina has been discontinued. This was because he was centered over
100 miles ENE of Cape Hatteras moving north at 9 with sustained winds
of 45 mph. The latest official NHC track forecast keeps him well
offshore as he moves NE.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: After a brief break, it was heating up again
in South Dakota with 107 in Phillip and 106 in Rapid City...a few
other highs included 105 in Shreveport, 106 in Waco and 108 in
Wichita...the hottest was 118 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We had just gotten Little Miss Molly
calmed down from holiday firecrackers and the last thunderstorm, but
the booming thunder this afternoon sent her scurrying under the bed.
Later this afternoon I hope to pet and cuddle her and divert her
attention by playing lots of ballgames. Thanks to Kim Langston for an
update on Scooby, the Great Dane, who overheated last weekend. He is
doing much better, but will have another liver test in about 2 weeks.
Life goes on.

...Blistering Summer Heat Continues...

The mid-summer heat wave will continue mostly unabated through mid-week,
with hazy days and fair nights. Afternoon temperatures will peak somewhere
between 95 and 100 degrees for most communities, and heat index values (the
way it feels due to the combination of temperature and humidity) will exceed
100 at times.

On any hot summer day there is some risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm
during the afternoon, but the ones that do pop up should be rather isolated.
The chance of any one spot getting wet today is only about one in ten.

SOME HEAT RELIEF? By the weekend, an upper trough will begin to form over
the eastern U.S., and a surface front is expected to approach Alabama from
the north. This should mean daytime temperatures slowly coming down, and
coverage of scattered showers and storms going up. The high around here on
Saturday and Sunday should be near or just over 90.

TROPICS: A low pressure center in an old front just off the Atlantic coast,
about 200 miles east of the South Carolina coast, has some chance to develop
into a tropical depression during the next 24 hours. A well defined tropical
wave moved off the coast of Africa yesterday, and is moving westward through
the far eastern Atlantic.

HEAT PARADE: Yesterday the mercury reached 100 degrees at Tuscaloosa, Fort
Payne, and Montgomery. The high was 99 at Birmingham, Auburn, Evergreen,
Troy, and Pinson.

SUMMER STORMS: Big storms last night dropped heavy rain on scattered central
Alabama communities; our Skywatcher in Childersburg reported 0.54", along
with frequent lightning.

OZONE: A code orange ozone alert is in effect for the Birmingham metro
today.

NO HEAT RELIEF: Sure do apologize for having to type that headline,
but we just do not see any appreciable relief from the heat for the
next 5 to 7 days at least. Compounding the problem is the lack of
rain. It is true that some parts of North and Central Alabama received
some very localized good showers Saturday and Sunday. We do not
believe there will be near that chance over the next five to seven
days.

Over the weekend, 1.63 inches of rain fell at Mumford on Saturday and
1.27 at Wedowee. Prattville got 1.08. Sunday afternoon 1.67 inches
fell in the Concord-Hueytown area of West Jefferson County.

HOW HOT WILL IT BE? We are going to stick with our forecast of highs
between 95 and 97 for the next 5 days across Central Alabama. It is
almost certain that a few locations will hit 100, especially places
like Tuscaloosa, Demopolis and Selma. Unfortunately, the nights will
be very uncomfortable also only in the mid 70s.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: We certainly can call it the baking USA,
because so many areas are having exceptional heat. On Saturday, the
temperature hit 120 in South Dakota. If that verifies, it will be
their hottest of all time breaking a record that was set back in the
Dust Bowl years. Yesterday it was 126 in Death Valley, 106 in
Bismarck, 103 in Denver and Dallas, 113 in Las Vegas and 117 at
Bullhead City, Arizona…we always say lightning is frightening. Over
the weekend, 4 persons were injured by lightning near a pond on the
Biltmore Estate at Asheville, North Carolina. The 3 adults and 1 child
were stable at an Asheville hospital.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Getting more and more concerned about
walking too much with my little pal forever, Little Miss Molly. This
intense heat is bad on little dogs, in fact, any dog. Instead of going
a full half mile in the heat of the day, I have been reducing it to
1/4 mile and now I am going to shoot for 1/8 mile. Molly does not seem
to mind, because her little tongue hangs out quickly. When I get great
resistance is when she sees one of her friends, human or dog, all the
way down the half-mile track headed this way. She has a conniption fit
to race ahead hoping to get a belly rub from that person. A sobering
note from Kim Langston, ABC 33/40 skywatcher, who told us how she
rushed her neighbor and the neighbor's 250+ pound Great Dane to a vet
in Russellville yesterday. If they had not done that, in 20 minutes or
so the dog would have been dead. They found him completely unable to
walk. They poured water all over him for a long time and then pulled
him to a carport to place under a fan. Only then did they rush to a
vet. When they reached the vet, after the dog had been having problems
for 4 hours, his temperature was still 103.7. The vet said 107 is
knocking on death's door. The dog named Scooby is having tests to see
if there was any damage to the kidneys, etc. This is a great lesson
and warning to us all. Thanks, Kim. Life goes on.....

...Dog Days Continue...

GOOD MORNING: We continue to be in the Dog Days of summer here in Alabama.
A few showers and storms formed on Sunday across Central Alabama, in
response to an upper level trough that was meandering southward. It should
be south of us today and we will return to the normal pattern of only
isolated storms during afternoons and early evenings.

LITTLE RELIEF: Significant rainfall amounts were spotty on Sunday. Most
areas picked up less than one tenth of an inch, but scattered areas saw one
half inch, with widely scattered locations getting over an inch, according
to Doppler radar estimates. 1.67 inches fell in West Hueytown in just 45
minutes at mid-afternoon, a figure that agrees nicely with the radar data.

AND NONE REALLY IN SIGHT: At least in the short and medium range. Partly
cloudy, hot, hazy and humid will be the weather word through midweek, with
only tiny afternoon storm chances. A more developed southerly flow may give
us better chances by Thursday and Friday, with even better chances for the
weekend as a trough tries to set up over the area.

HEAT INDICES: We should see highs in the middle 90s and dewpoints in the
lower 70s for much of the week ahead. This will push heat indices into the
105 degree range during afternoon hours, which is the danger threshold for
heat exhaustion and heatstroke, so take it easy.

TROPICS: A long frontal boundary lies off the East Coast today. Low
pressure systems are rippling along it. The one off the North Carolina
coast shows some promise for development, potentially tropically. It will
be moving northeast and should be of no consequence to land.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Tragedy in Papua, New Guinea near Australia as a
relatively small earthquake caused three tsunami as high as 45 feet to
strike the north coast. Over 2200 people died, many of them never found
because they were swept out to sea or devoured by saltwater crocodiles or
wild dogs. The waves destroyed five villages along an 18 mile stretch of
coastline.

GOOD AFTERNOON: A few showers and storms developed late this morning
across Central Alabama under a mid-level trough in the atmosphere.
The showers and storms were fairly numerous, but were of the small,
popcorn type pulse variety. A few lucky locations picked up cooling
showers, including Greystone Cove, where Mr. Spann picked up 0.12 in a
passing shower just after lunch. Funny, we get excited now when we
pick up a tenth of an inch of rain.

SHORT TERM LOOK: It looks like showers and a few storms will continue
through early evening in association with the trough. Watch out for
lightning as the main threat if you are lucky enough to have one in
your neighborhood. Temperatures have been held back just a tad with
all the clouds, and readings so far have made it into the lower 90s.
It is quite muggy, with dewpoints ranging between the upper 60s to 75
at Gadsden at early afternoon.

THE WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will be dominating our weather through
much of the coming week. Consequently, hot temperatures will
continue, with afternoon highs in the middle 90s. Dewpoints will
remain around 70 or higher and heat indices will approach danger
levels from time to time, so take it easy in the hear. Storms will be
isolated at best through midweek. After that, they will become a
little more common, then perhaps even fairly likely by the weekend.

SPACE SHUTTLE LANDING FORECAST: Space Shuttle Discovery is scheduled
to return to earth on Monday. There will be two opportunities to land
at the Space Shuttle Landing Facility at the Kennedy Space Center in
Florida at 8:13 a.m. CDT with a second opportunity just before 10 a.m.
CDT. Showers may be in the vicinity of the landing site in Florida,
which would necessitate delaying or moving the return to Edwards AFB
or White Sands in New Mexico.

HIGH HEAT: It was 125F in Death Valley on Saturday. As you can read
below, this is only 3 degrees short of the record high since 1913.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: Death Valley/Furnace Creek, California reached
127F (the morning low was 81F). This is only one degree lower than
its record high of 128F since 1913. (Death Valley/Greenland Ranch had
five maximums ranging from 129F to 134F in July, 1913, but these
extremely high observations are not supported by the maximums at
surrounding stations during the same period.) Trustworthy readings
of 128F were attained in Death Valley in July, 1972, and in June,
1994. In June, 1994, a park ranger measured 131F at Badwater in Death
Valley with a sling psychrometer. Badwater is typically a few
degrees hotter than Furnace Creek on summer afternoons.

Other memorable readings from this very hot day: 126 at Bullhead City
AZ (just two degrees short of the all-time Arizona record of 128F).
Las Vegas, NV reached 116F, just one degree shy of its all-time
maximum of 117F. The record temps were the result of an unusually
strong upper-level high pressure system that was sprawling over the
Southwest.

...Hot and Dry...

GOOD MORNING! Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across
Central Alabama on Saturday afternoon, bringing cooling relief and
rains to quite a few locations, but leaving others looking longingly
at the promising storm clouds just a few miles away. I estimate that
about 80% of Central Alabama received rain yesterday, but amounts were
generally light. Areas of western Jefferson County and Tuscaloosa
County down into northern Bibb County got fairly widespread 1/2 to 1
inch amounts with a few lucky spots picking up around 2 inches. A
nice swath of rainfall fell over northern Talladega County into
extreme southwestern Cleburne County. Here in Northeast Jefferson
County, we continue on a rainfall island with rain all around, but
none for us.

NO RELIEF IN SIGHT: High pressure will be the dominant feature in
Alabama's weather through much of the coming week. It will keep a
ring of fire in the way of storms around us through midweek.
Gradually, the high will shift eastward and at least scattered
afternoon and evening storms will return. But until then, hot and dry
will be the continued weather word.

HEAT INDICES: Temperatures in the middle 90s and dew points in the
lower 70s today, (and for the next few days) will produce heat index
values near 105 during the afternoon hours. This will put us on the
borderline of the danger category each afternoon, so take it easy.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A dramatic and mysterious cooling of waters in
the northeast Gulf of Mexico was killing fish and chilling bathers
along the beaches of the Florida Panhandle. Coastal water
temperatures from near the Alabama line to as far east as Panama
City., plunged suddenly from the upper 80s to the low70s, the kind of
surf temperatures that could be expected off of Cape Cod in mid-July.
The clear, cold water killed all fish life with its extraordinarily
low levels of dissolved oxygen. The best scientific guess is that the
cold water welled up from the DeSoto Canyon about 30 miles or so off
of the Panhandle. - Bill Murray
