...Dry Weather To Continue ...

Greetings from San Diego, where is was a gorgeous Saturday of
sightseeing was capped by a night of baseball in Petco Park, watching
the Padres and the Pirates in the next to the last game of the regular
season. The Major League playoffs start this week, my favorite sports
time of the year.

TODAY AND THE WEEK AHEAD: Today will be a gorgeous day across Central
Alabama. Lots of sunshine, a light northerly winds and highs in the
middle 80s. Ditto for Monday. On Tuesday, a fairly strong cold front
will approach from the northwest. But it will be starved for
moisture. There will be a slight chance of a shower or storm on
Tuesday, but those chances will be slim. Behind the front, it will be
breezy on Wednesday as drier and cooler air overspreads the South.
There will be a hint of fall in the air with highs retreating back
into the 70s. Look for 50s Wednesday morning, but 40s may be common
Thursday morning. Cool!

BIG WEEKEND: NASCAR comes calling at Talladega next weekend. Alabama
entertains Kentucky and Auburn travels to Vandy next weekend in key
SEC matchups. Perfect weather is in store, with fair conditions under
high pressure and very comfortable temperatures. Highs will be in the
70s. Lows will be in the 50s.

TOPIC TROPICS: Hurricane Kyle is about 140 miles south southeast of
Nantucket this morning. Kyle is still a minimal hurricane. It is
moving north northeast at nearly 25 mph. It is moving over colder
water, but the quick forward speed will limit the weakening. In fact,
Kyle may remain a hurricane until just before landfall near the Bay of
Fundy between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia around midnight tonight.
Kyle will bring tropical storm force winds to Nantucket and the
Eastern Cape this afternoon. Then tonight, as the center approaches
land, tropical storm force winds will affect Downeast Maine east of
Portland. Strong tropical storm force winds could affect the extreme
eastern coast of Maine, but the highest winds should occur in New
Brunswick and Nova Scotia in Canada. Environment Canada is warning
that extensive tree damage and power outages will occur. Storm surge
should not be a big problem. Rains of up to 3 inches will affect
eastern New England and the Maritime Provinces of Canada.

REST OF THE TROPICS: Some signs that a tropical depression could form
over the southern Gulf of Mexico in the next couple of days. It would
move northeast toward the Florida Peninsula. Strong wind shear should
limit development. Elsewhere in the Atlantic, two other disturbances,
but prospects for development are slim.

SUPERTYPHOON JANGMI: This storm is the strongest so far around the
globe in 2008. It had top winds of 155 mph yesterday, just 5 mph
below the threshold for Category Five status. Jangmi is making
landfall in Taiwan this morning. It will recurve and weaken as it
turns toward Japan.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Hurricane Georges made its final landfall as a
category 2 hurricane with top winds of 105 mph near Biloxi MS. A ten
foot storm surge caused extensive destruction along the Mississippi,
Alabama and Northwest Florida coastline.

...Great Weekend...

Your afternoon forecast is being prepared from an AMTRAK California
Pacific Surfliner train on the way to San Diego. I will check off my
24th Major League Baseball Park tonight, watching the Padres play at
PETCO Park. The weather here is beautiful. It's great back in
Alabama also.

LOCAL EVENTS: Our fabulous weekend weather is accompanied by some
tremendous events in Birmingham. Get downtown and checkout the
Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival. It is the tenth year for the
celebration of new independent cinema. Check out some films you
wouldn't otherwise see, at nine venues in the City Center. Passes are
very affordable. The Taste of 4th Avenue Jazz Festival is going on
right now at the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame at 4th Avenue North and
17th Street. It starts at 12:30 p.m. with a cultural parade and
remarks by the Mayor at 1. Catch some fabulous jazz acts on into the
morning hours of Sunday. Admission is free. Tomorrow, at 3 p.m., the
Dan Tyminski Band will be featured at Vulcan Aftertunes at Vulcan Park.
Admission is $8 for adults and $4 for kids 5-12, free for 4 and under.

YOUR FORECAST: In a word, dry. That upper low over the eastern U.S.
is beginning to move on to the northeast. The low clouds that wrapped
into North Alabama are already dissipating. A
general northerly flow means little moisture for us. A fairly strong
cold front will move through Alabama on Tuesday. It will be mostly
dry, with just slight chances for a shower or storm. Behind the
front, drier air will flow. This will mean a nice taste of fall after
midweek, with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s for the most part.
There will even be a few 40s.

KYLE AND THE TROPICS: Not to be confused with a new hot rock band.
Tropical Storm Kyle should get promoted to hurricane later today. It
will pass about 100 miles east of Nantucket Sunday afternoon, brushing
Cape Cod with tropical storm force winds. It will start curving north
northeast and brush eastern Maine with tropical storm or even
hurricane force winds Sunday night. Heavy rains will affect the
Northeast through Sunday night. Elsewhere over the Atlantic, a
disturbance over the Yucatan will move northeast crossing the Florida
Peninsula. Another disturbance midway between Africa and the islands
looks healthy but wind shear should inhibit further development for
the time being.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Auburn hosts Tennessee at 2:30 at Jordan Hare
Stadium; the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature around 79,
falling into the mid 70s by fourth quarter. Alabama is on the road;
they will play Georgia in Athens Saturday evening at 6:45. The sky
will be mostly cloudy; the chance of a shower is only about one in
five during the game. Temperatures will fall from 77 at kickoff into
the upper 60s by the end of the game. UAB will be on the road to play
South Carolina at Columbia's Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday evening
at 6:00; just a slight risk of a shower with a kickoff temperature
around 78, falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.

ON THIS DATE IN 1916: No one knew storm surge better than Isaac
Cline, the Chief of U.S. Weather Bureau Forecast Center for the Gulf
States in New Orleans. Cline had been in charge of the Weather
Bureau Office in the Galveston during the deadly 1900 hurricane. In
his new job, Cline had established hurricane observation posts in Cuba
and Swan Island. They had given him advancee notice that a hurricane
was entering the Gulf. As water levels began rising on the Gulf Coast
in the morning of the 27th, he could read the signs. He predicted
that a deadly storm surge was imminent on the Gulf coast. It allowed
warnings to be passed to coastal residents on the Louisiana,
Mississippi and Alabama coasts. His predictions came true on the 28th
as the powerful hurricane made landfall over southern Louisiana.

...Not Much Rain Promised...

THE ALABAMA STORY: Lots of compliments lately on our weather. Of
course, we did not have anything to do with it except try to issue
accurate daily forecasts. Not much change down the road as
temperatures in the afternoons hang out around the 82 to 85-degree
mark and lows at night mostly in the 50s. A number of Alabama
communities had lows in the 40s Friday morning. We have clearly felt
the transition to autumn for the past several days. We may have a bit
of cloudiness over NE Alabama this morning.

A down side to autumn is the dryness. October is traditionally our
driest month of the year and once, back in 1924, we went an entire
month with only 0.01 measurable rain.
The rain prospects are dim. We do have another front approaching from
the NW on Tuesday. There should be enough moisture caught up in that
front to produce a few showers, but do not look for any widespread
beneficial rain. By Wednesday, a large high-pressure area over
Southern Canada will be pushing more cool air into Alabama and by next
Friday the large high will extend from Mississippi, Alabama and
Louisiana northward to Minnesota giving widespread cool temperatures
and dry weather. Do not be surprised to hear of some place in Alabama
having a temperature as low as 38 by next weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tennessee will be in Auburn this afternoon for a
2:30 kick off on CBS. It should be mostly sunny with 82 degrees and in
the 70s in the fourth quarter. Alabama is in Athens for an evening
game with Georgia on ESPN. The weather should be excellent with about
76 at kick off with 60s in the fourth quarter. We believe now that the
game will be played without showers. UAB is in Columbia to play South
Carolina. It is an evening game on ESPN-360. It should be about 76
degrees at kick off and dropping into the 60s for the second half.
That game should also be dry.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The renegade low-pressure area that caused so much
trouble on the South Atlantic coast moved inland Friday and was
centered near Spartanburg, South Carolina late Friday night. It is now
expected to turn toward the NE and get out of our hair. Meanwhile,
Tropical Storm Kyle will continue moving northward passing well to the
west of Bermuda. We believe that he will miss most of the USA east
coast and make landfall in the Canadian Maritimes. A slight turn
toward the west, however, could impact the Cape Cod area as well as
Eastern Maine. Regardless, he is probably going to create some rough
seas over the USA Atlantic coast in the northeast.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: When we got Molly out of the PBS (Puppy
Beauty Shop) yesterday, her eyes looked twice as big because they had
cut the air away from her face. She always smells so good after
getting a bath a shampoo. When we turned onto our street, she knows
every single house and which people love her. Her tail was whapping
the steering wheel and it was great to have her home. Life goes on.

...More Pleasant Temperatures...

NIGHTS NOT QUITE AS COOL: Another very cool morning across Alabama
and a number of communities had their coldest temperature since last
spring. It was 49 as far south as Montgomery and Tuscaloosa. A few of
the chillier temperatures included:

41 Cottondale
45 Oneonta, Pinson, Meridianville, Millport
46 Concord/Hueytown, Broomtown, Troy
47 Anniston, Muscle Shoals
48 Coker, Ft. Payne
For the next several nights, it will not be that cool. Across Central
Alabama we look for mid 50s tonight and Saturday night and close to 60
into early next week. Highs will be 82 to 85.

We are watching conditions to our east. The coastal low that developed
and is causing so many problems along the South Atlantic coast, moved
inland and it was centered over Northern South Carolina. Circulation
is clearly visible on radar and it had spread some rain as far west as
NE Georgia. Greenville, South Carolina was reporting heavy rain. If
this low follows the rules, it is expected to lift back toward the NE
Saturday and Sunday and to the Mid-Atlantic States.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks ideal for high school games tonight with
generally clear conditions and comfortable temperatures. For most of
the high school stadiums, the kick off is around 7:30 when it should
be about 75 degrees and dropping to about 65 in the fourth quarter.
Tennessee travels to Auburn Saturday afternoon for a 2:30 game on CBS.
Look for mostly sunny weather with 78 to 80 at kick off and 70s in the
fourth quarter. Alabama plays Georgia in an evening game Saturday
(6:45 p.m. on ESPN). The game is in Athens.

There is a small chance of a shower with near 78 at kick off and about
68 at the end of the game. UAB will play South Carolina in Columbia
showing on ESPN-360 with a 6:00 p.m. kick off. About 76 degrees at
kick off and in the 60s in the fourth quarter with very little chance
of a shower.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A new area of disturbed weather way out in the
Atlantic 1,000 miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands. It will be running
into a less favourable are for development. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm
Kyle is the main story. This afternoon he was centered 445 miles SSW
of Bermuda and moving NNW at 12 with sustained winds of 60 mph. He
could become a hurricane by Saturday night. The track forecast carries
him well east of the Mid-Atlantic coast, but by the time he gets off
New England people should pay attention. He could brush the eastern
tip of Maine. If his track should change slightly to the west, he
could even bother Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In any event, look for
rough seas along the Mid and North Atlantic coast.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We have had my little pal Molly roaming
around our house for six years. We have not realized what a fixture
she is in our lives. So, today there is a big void. She is at the PBS
(Puppy Beauty Shop) getting a trim and shampoo. Her eyes will be
bigger when she gets home, because her face had gotten bushy. This
means she will boss me even easier when I can look into those bright
eyes. Little Miss Molly is still afraid of riding in a car, so she
shook all the way to the vet. I cannot wait until she gets home. Life
goes on.

...The Long Dry Spell Continues...

GETTING DRY AROUND HERE: The last really significant rain around here
was back on September 14, when 0.29" was measured at the Birmingham
Airport. Our total for the month is only 0.40", and the chance of rain
will not be in the forecast for the foreseeable future. The weekend
will feature more fine fall weather, with sunny pleasant days and
clear cool nights. Our weather will be on the breezy side today thanks
to a strong low pressure center near Wilmington, NC., but the rain
associated with this big coastal storm will stay well to the east of
Alabama. The system will produce gale force winds along the middle
Atlantic coast through tonight.

NEXT WEEK: An upper trough will carve out over the eastern third of
the nation by mid-week, and should deliver the coolest air so far this
season by Thursday and Friday, with highs dropping into the 70s and
lows in the mid to upper 40s. At this time we don't expect any rain
with the cold front that is due in here late Tuesday night or early
Wednesday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight, nearly perfect
weather with a clear sky and temperatures falling from the mid 70s
into the 60s during the games.
Auburn hosts Tennessee tomorrow at 2:30 (CBS) at Jordan Hare Stadium;
the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature around 79, falling
into the mid 70s by fourth quarter. Alabama is on the road; they will
play Georgia in Athens Saturday evening at 6:45 (ESPN). The sky will
be mostly cloudy; the chance of a shower is only about one in five
during the game. Temperatures will fall from 77 at kickoff into the
upper 60s by the end of the game. UAB will be on the road to play
South Carolina at Columbia's Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday evening
at 6:00 (ESPN 360); just a slight risk of a shower with a kickoff
temperature around 78, falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.
And, Jacksonville State travels to Charleston, Illinois to play
Eastern Illinois at 1:30 p.m. CDT tomorrow; the sky will be sunny with
a kickoff temperature near 83 degrees.

KEEPING AN EYE ON KYLE: Tropical Storm Kyle is in the Atlantic Ocean,
east of the Bahamas, and is moving to the north. The NHC expects Kyle
to become a category one hurricane within the next 24 hours; the
current forecast track takes the system just east of Cape Cod over
weekend, and then northeast toward the Canadian Maritimes. Kyle will
not impact Alabama or the Gulf of Mexico.

HIGH FIRE DANGER: Just a reminder that the forest fire danger in
Alabama will remain high through the weekend; be very careful if you
are planning any outdoor burning. We don't expect any significant rain
around here for at least the next 7 to 10 days.

GETTING COLDER: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday was Beaver,
Alaska with 9 degrees. Down here in the lower 48, Stanley, Idaho
dropped to 25 degrees.

...Weather Temporarily In A Rut...

CLEAR INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK: That means no rain. At one time not too
long ago, Birmingham had built a 5-inch rain surplus but as of today
we have chipped away to 3.36 excess for the year. We are still much
better off than last year. We have received 44.26 inches this year—
almost double the 23.52 that we had on this same date last year.
We have no rain in our forecast, at least through Monday, and very
little chance beyond that even into the middle of next week.

LAST NIGHT'S CHILL: It was our coolest morning so far this year. In
some of the valleys of NE Alabama, we came within 5 degrees of having
some scattered light frost. A number of communities reported lows in
the 40s and 50s were very common even down into South Alabama. We have
an exhaustive list of the low temperatures posted on the ABC 33/40
Weather Blog, but here are a few samples:

43 Muscadine and Broomtown
44 Ashland
45 Remlap, Cottondale, Troy
46 Brewton, Talladega, Ft. Payne
47 McCalla
48 Alexander City
57 Gulf Shores
60 Mobile

It could even be a degree or so cooler than that tonight. A fresh
supply of cool dry air will arrive tomorrow accompanied by brisk
northerly winds. Highs over the next couple of days will be close to
80 and then warming to the mid 80s Sunday and Monday.

NERVOUS COASTAL WATERS: This time we are speaking of the Atlantic
Coast and not the Gulf of Mexico. A well-defined low-pressure area was
about 100 miles off the coast of North and South Carolina this
afternoon moving WNW at 10. It is not yet tropical, but it acts like
one. It could still develop into a subtropical or tropical cyclone
later today or tonight. It doesn't matter, because it will still
produce strong winds, coastal flooding, high surf and dangerous rip
currents along part of the Atlantic Coast during the next couple of
days. There have been some 16-foot waves off shore and winds were
gusting between 50 and 60 mph in coastal areas of NE North Carolina
and Virginia. Meanwhile, the other low it seems like we have been
watching all year, has become slightly better organized and it may
become a tropical cyclone at any time. A reconnaissance aircraft is in
the storm now. Latest models generally take the center more to the
right than earlier projections toward the Canadian Maritimes.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The highest point in Utah is 13,528-foot King's Peak
in the Uintah Mountains in the NE part of the state. It is the only
mountain range in the USA that runs east/west. However, the Wasatch
Range, running north/south right through the heart of the state,
catches the first moisture from the Pacific Ocean…it was 37 this
morning on Mt. LeConte in Great Smoky Mountain National Park…16 at
Beaver, Alaska was the coldest in the USA…in the lower 48, it was 27
in Yellowstone Park (Jellystone to Yogi Bear) and also at Stanley,
Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It was 2:32 a.m. I was sound asleep
dreaming about chasing drizzle, when Little Miss Molly stood up in the
middle of our bed and started barking like we were having burglars.
She jumped down on the floor and was pounding my side of the bed. I
got up, got dressed and took her into the living area. Seems she was
dying of thirst—that is all she wanted. As soon as she drank her
water, she zoomed up the steps to the majority owner's sewing room.
She loves that part of the house. It was back to bed for me with no
more dreams and I proceeded toward my automatic 5:00 a.m. wakeup. Life
goes on.

...No Rain Through The Weekend...

WARM DAYS, COOL NIGHTS: Not much change is expected in our weather
through the weekend; fabulous fall weather is the story with sunny
warm days and clear cool nights. Highs generally in the low 80s, with
lows down in the 50s. What a wonderful time of the year.

TO THE EAST: While our weather remains tranquil, a major coastal storm
will bring lots of wind and rain to the middle Atlantic coast region
today and tomorrow; tropical storm force winds are likely today along
the coasts of North Carolina, Virginia, and Delaware, spreading
northward tonight and tomorrow up to the New Jersey and New York
coasts. A High Surf Advisory is also in effect and there is a high
risk of rip currents. While this hybrid system is not technically a
tropical storm, the impact will be about the same.

ALSO IN THE TROPICS: The tropical disturbance north of Hispanolia will
move northward today, but development is not likely in the near term
due to hostile winds aloft. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet
for now. The hurricane season will continue until the last day of
November.

NEXT WEEK: The upper air wind pattern is forecast to amplify across
North America by the middle of next week, with a major upper trough
forming over the eastern third of the U.S. This will bring the coolest
air so far this season into Alabama in 7 to 8 days, with highs in the
low 70s, and lows in the upper 40s by Thursday and Friday of next
week. At this time we don't expect any rain for race weekend at
Talladega (October 4-5) with very pleasant temperatures.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight and tomorrow night,
nearly perfect weather with a clear sky and temperatures falling from
the mid 70s into the 60s during the games. Auburn hosts Tennessee
Saturday at 2:30 (CBS) at Jordan Hare Stadium; the sky will be clear
with a kickoff temperature around 80, falling into the mid 70s by
fourth quarter. Alabama is on the road; they will play Georgia in
Athens Saturday evening at 6:45 (ESPN). The sky will be mostly cloudy;
the chance of a shower is only about one in five during the game.
Temperatures will fall from 77 at kickoff into the upper 60s by the
end of the game. UAB will be on the road to play South Carolina at
Columbia's Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday evening at 6:00 (ESPN 360);
just a slight risk of a shower with a kickoff temperature around 78,
falling into the 60s by the fourth quarter.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: Four hurricanes were going on simultaneously in
the Atlantic Hurricane basin (Georges, Ivan, Jeanne, and Karl) when
Karl was upgraded to hurricane on the 5PM advisory. That was the first
time that had happened since 1893. After moving along the north coast
of Cuba on the 24th, Georges was crossing the Florida Keys on this
date, heading into the Gulf of Mexico. The storm had re-intensified
and had winds of 105 mph when it made landfall near Key West about
midday on the 25th.

...Chamber of Commerce Weather...

VERY FRIENDLY WEATHER: Not always the best weather, especially now
when almost all of the state is back into an old habit of needing
rain. Our ABC 33/40 Skywatcher, Vic Bell in NE Etowah County, reports
only ¼ inch of rain in the last 17 days. Similar reports from other NE
Alabama locations. In Huntsville, the deficiency for the year through
today is 12.56 inches.

Little or no chance of rain all the way through the weekend. We are
watching a situation off the South Atlantic coast that could spread
some rain westward into Georgia and the Carolinas, but at least
through Sunday we think all of that will remain east of Alabama. We
could see some showers, especially over the eastern sections later
Monday and Tuesday.

Meanwhile, we will get a fresh supply of cooler and drier air from the
north that will hold our high temperatures to the lower 80s Thursday
and Friday with cool nights in the lower 50s. It is almost certain
that we will hear of some low temperatures in the upper 40s the next
two mornings. Lows this morning were in the 50s over much of North
Alabama and even in parts of South Alabama.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Starting with tomorrow's editions, we will have a
complete football weather round up, but a preliminary indication is
that the Auburn/Tennessee game will be dry Saturday afternoon in
Auburn. There could be some showers around the area of Athens for the
Alabama/Georgia game Saturday night.

NERVOUS ATLANTIC COAST: In a statement late this morning, the
National Hurricane Center said the low-pressure area about 250 miles
SE of Wilmington, North Carolina had changed little in the last
several hours. They still believe it has the potential to become a
tropical or sub-tropical cyclone later today or tonight as it drifts
westward. The low is partly responsible for winds up to hurricane
force well to the north and NW of the center. It will bring strong
winds, coastal flooding, high surf and dangerous rip currents to part
of the U. S. east coast during the next couple of days. Meanwhile, the
broad low-pressure area we have been watching for a long time is now
centered north of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is still
disorganized and no noticeable surface circulation. Winds upstairs are
only so-so favourable for development as it moves north the next
couple of days. Still a lingering threat for heavy rain and
life-threatening flash floods and mudslides over Haiti, the Dominican
Republic and Puerto Rico through tonight.

GLOBAL ROAMING: We always think of Hawaii as being warm, but they do
have some high elevations and occasionally get snow. Early this
morning, it was 34 degrees on Mauna Kea with a strong SW wind and a
wind chill of 19…it was a chilly 36 atop Mt. LeConte in the Great
Smoky Mountains this morning…the USA low was 24 at Stanley, Idaho and
the hottest yesterday was 105 in Death Valley.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since writing this little paragraph for
the last five years, I am amazed at the huge number of people that
love dogs. A nice e-mail from Bo Lollar at Berry in Fayette County. He
said he has had many dogs in his 67 years. All but a couple of them
have been cast-offs that he rescued. They either show up at his farm
or he picks them up off the road somewhere. All of that kind of dogs
have been the greatest of pets. He still has two dogs and two cats—all
adopted and he said someone could offer him a million bucks for them
and he would decline. They are so loyal to him and he is loyal to
them. He thinks no one should own just a single dog. He believes that
every dog needs a playmate. He has had several dogs go off and never
come back and some have come back with hunter's bullets in them. Bo
also highly recommends neutering and spaying. Good to hear from him.
Life goes on.

...Warm Afternoons; Cool Nights...

SIMPLE FORECAST: Weather like this makes our job pretty easy. Dry air
is going nowhere, and we will simply continue the forecast of sunny
warm days and clear cool nights through the weekend. While afternoon
highs will remain in the 80 to 84 degree range, early morning lows
will drop down into the 50s. Looks like the coolest morning week this
week will come early tomorrow when low 50s are likely; some of the
colder valleys across North Alabama should drop into the upper 40s for
the first time this season. Humidity values will remain low, and
visibility during the day will be excellent. Some fine fall weather,
indeed.

TO THE EAST: Low pressure forming just off the coast of North Carolina
will bring the potential of gale force winds and heavy rain to the
middle Atlantic coast during the next 48 hours. And, our friends on
the East Coast will also have to watch a developing tropical system
near Hispanolia. This system did not get its act together yesterday
due to interaction with the mountainous island, and rather harsh winds
aloft. But, today as the wave moves north, conditions will be more
conducive for development, and it should grow into a tropical
depression, and ultimately Tropical Storm Kyle. There is a chance this
one could impact the New England coast early in the weekend. Both of
these features will not impact Alabama's weather in any way.

LONG RANGE: Medium range computer models show a strong upper trough
forming over the eastern third of the U.S. next week; if this is
correct it could mean the coolest air so far this fall season in about
a week, or right at the beginning of October.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Hurricane Gloria dubbed "killer storm of
Century" by media, sending entire east coast into a panic. The storm,
packing measured winds of 156 mph by aircraft reconnaissance and a
central pressure of 918.6 mb, was the strongest ever recorded in the
western part of the Atlantic Ocean. I was working as the chief
meteorologist at KDFW-TV in Dallas at the time (Channel 4), and I
remember our news director, Wendell Harris, calling me at home late
that morning to let me know I was doing the weather live at 5:00,
6:00, and 10:00 from the National Hurricane Center in Miami. I hopped
a lear jet at the Addison Airport, and arrived in Miami at 4:30, just
in time for the 5:00 news. Gloria made landfall on the North Carolina
Outer Banks, bringing strong wind gusts to the area, downing thousands
of trees and leaving over two million people without power. Overall,
Gloria caused $900 million (1985 USD) in property damage and eight
deaths, a total lower than expected due to the hurricane's arrival at
low tide.

EXTREMES: Hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 105 degrees. Coldest spot was Beaver, Alaska with 14 degrees. In
the continental U.S., the coldest place was Burns, Oregon with 22
degrees. Here in Alabama yesterday, the warmest spots were Muscle
Shoals, Tuscaloosa, and Mobile with 87 degrees.

...Pleasant Weather All Week...

AUTUMN ARRIVED ON TIME: There is just one downside to this textbook
example of nice weather. We still need some rain in some areas. It is
true that Birmingham has a surplus for the year of 3.63 inches, but we
are in sort of an island of surplus. Tuscaloosa has a shortfall of
9.18 inches for the year and Huntsville, one of the driest locations,
still has a deficiency of 12.21 inches.
Little or no chance to chip away at that deficiency all the way
through the weekend. In fact, I doubt if we see any rain even into
early next week.

So, we might as well grin and bear it and enjoy the good weather while
we can. That good weather translates into highs only in the lower 80s
and lows at night in the 50s. We are almost sure to see some low
temperatures in the upper 40s Thursday morning, especially in the
valleys. Highs will be mostly between 80 and 84 all the way through
the weekend.
Early this afternoon, the temperature was only 72 atop Mt. Cheaha with
easterly winds gusting as high as 30 mph. You cannot ask for any
better than that.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Not much change in the large low-pressure area
centered near the Eastern Dominican Republic, but the barometer is
falling and upper-level winds are trying to become more welcome. It
has the potential to become a tropical depression at any time as it
moves slowly north or NW away from Hispaniola. Additional flash
flooding, potentially life threatening, will continue through tomorrow
in parts of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The SE Bahamas should
stay on the alert also. An Air Force plane was in the system this
afternoon. It could eventually become Tropical Storm Kyle. Projections
are for a northward track, possibly affecting the NE USA, including
New England.
Meanwhile, it is not tropical in nature, but a developing low-pressure
area in the Atlantic east of North Carolina and Virginia is going to
cause all kinds of problems, including very high surf, strong NE winds
and a high risk of rip currents.

GLOBAL ROAMING: An astounding 50 inches of rain so far this year in
St. Louis. That is almost the normal for an entire year in Birmingham…
Alaska and the lower 48 shared the coldest temperature this morning
with 23 at Redmond, Oregon and Gulkana, Alaska…Baghdad, where it stays
blistering hot all summer, is expecting more friendly lower 90s over
the weekend with a low Saturday morning around 66.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Just another little indication of how
Little Miss Molly has me under control. When I walked from my office
into the kitchen to get my 6th cup of coffee, she was sitting on her
lookout tower (the back of the couch). As I walked by, she quickly
jumped onto the seat of the couch, turned upside down and stuck her
feet straight in the air. Translation: please give me a belly rub. I
did. Flo and Ed Waits in Hueytown, have two Shih-tzus named Max and
Honey. They are huge Miss Molly fans. Recently, Flo cleaned out her
linen closet and took 20 towels and 3 bags of shredded paper to the
Humane Society to use in puppy beds. They love old blankets, etc. that
can keep their puppies comfortable and all of us can give shredded
paper. The Society really appreciated it. Flo, who has a weakness for
dogs, wanted to bring home a beautiful Alaskan Malmute, but they
already had 2 dogs. Life goes on.

...Fine Fall Weather...

NIGHTS GETTING COOLER: Today is the first full day of autumn for the
northern hemisphere, and right on cue we are forecasting cooler nights
in the days ahead. We expect temperatures will drop into the mid 50s
early tomorrow, and by daybreak Thursday most North Alabama
communities will fall into the low 50s. That, of course, means that
some of the colder spots will fall into the upper 40s for the first
time since spring. Always refreshing after the long, hot summer. The
air is very dry, so each day temperatures will rise quickly. The high
today should be in the mid 80s, with low 80s tomorrow and Thursday.
The humidity will remain low, so the afternoon warmth will be very
comfortable. And, the dry air means no chance of rain for the rest of
the week.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: No major change for the weekend; at this time we
expect mostly sunny warm days and clear, cool nights Saturday and
Sunday. Highs in the 80 to 85 degree range; lows will stay in the
comfortable 50s.

NEXT WEEK: The medium range computer models are hinting at a strong
upper trough over the eastern third of the nation early next week; if
that idea is correct it could set the stage for the coolest
temperatures so far this season in about 7 to 8 days. Stay tuned.

TROPICS: A tropical disturbance near Hispanolia has the potential to
become a tropical depression today as the upper air winds become
lighter around the system, and it drifts north, away from the island.
In fact, this has a good chance to become Tropical Storm Kyle in
coming days, and is a potential threat to the upper Atlantic coast at
the end of the week. Everyone from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Cod will
need to monitor the progress of this one closely. It is no threat to
the Gulf of Mexico, and will not impact Alabama's weather.

THE GOLDEN DAYS OF FALL: Today, the average high in Birmingham is 83,
and the average low is 61. Those values will drop to 80/58 by the end
of the month, and 70/46 by Halloween. The earliest freeze on record in
Birmingham came on October 18, 1948 when the low was a frosty 31
degrees. The average date of our first freeze is November 8. We also
note that October is typically our driest month of the year; our
average rain for the month is only 3.23".

ON THIS DATE IN 1975: Hurricane Eloise makes landfall during the
morning hours between Fort Walton Beach and Panama City, Florida.
Eloise was the first hurricane to make landfall in that area in this
century. A storm surge of 12-16 feet accompanied the storm with a high
water mark of 18.2 feet at Dune Allen Beach, Florida. Over $100
million in damage was reported and there were four storm-related
fatalities in the storm. Winds reached 125 mph sustained with gusts to
155 mph. 21 deaths. Damage totaled $490 million. On a personal note,
that was the first hurricane I ever experienced; I was in Fort Walton
Beach that morning assisting with amateur radio communication needs.
My next one would be four years later; Hurricane Frederic in September
1979.

...A Mostly Dry Week...

AUTUMN IS HERE: Officially, that is. It arrived at 10:44 this morning
and there is no way in the world that you can tell when it arrived,
because it has to do with the position of the sun to the earth. We
weather folks pay little or no attention to the official arrival of
seasons. Instead, we consider September, October and November as
autumn.

Regardless, the weather is following orders and it is going to feel
very much autumn-like for most of this week. There is some indication
that some showers could arrive for the weekend, but we are leaving
them out through Friday until we can get a better handle on the
situation.

Atop Mt. Cheaha early this afternoon, it was only 72 degrees with an
east wind gusting to 29 mph. That had to feel very good. Early this
morning, the temperature dropped to 53 in Broomtown, 56 in
Concord/Hueytown and Coker and 55 in Muscle Shoals and Scrougout. We
expect lows across Central Alabama to be generally in the upper 50s
tonight and tomorrow night, dropping into the mid 50s Thursday and
Friday morning. We can almost guarantee that we will hear of some
upper 40s in the NE Alabama valleys by Thursday morning. (It is
dangerous to use the word guarantee in the world of weather.)

THE TROPICAL WORLD: A broad area of low pressure was centered near
the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic and Western Puerto Rico this
afternoon. It still has not become organized enough to be called a
tropical depression. However, the circulation is better defined today
and this has the potential to go on to a tropical depression as it
moves NNW over the next day or two. It may also become a tropical
storm eventually and would be named Kyle. It has already produced
life-threatening flash flooding across much of Puerto Rico and that
will continue. The SE Bahamas should also watch. Long-range
projections do not bring this one into the Gulf of Mexico, but the
Outer Banks of North Carolina may eventually have a close call. By
Friday morning, it may be centered east of Cape Hatteras and by
Saturday morning may be east of Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Not
sealed in stone yet. As of early this afternoon, this disturbance had
already produced these rain amounts in Puerto Rico: 20.00 at Guayama,
10.65 at Juncos and 11.46 at Wyauco. San Juan had received 4 inches.

THE WORLD AROUND US: 26 in Saranac Lake, New York was the lower 48
cold spot this morning. In Alaska, the low was 25 at Eagle. Baghdad is
very close to Birmingham as far as the latitude is concerned. So,
their changing season happens about the same time as ours, but maybe
not as pronounced. They expect a high of 100 the next two days, which
is quite a comedown from 110 that is so common. Even the nights will
be cooler between 66 and 73 this week and by next Sunday they expect a
high of only 87. I am sure our servicemen will be very happy about
that.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Out real early with my little pal for a
½-mile walk on the walking track. We were walking directly into a
breeze around 15 mph and a dew point in the low 60s and it felt very
good. The Old Crow Motel even shows signs of some of the leaves
turning in the upper rooms, but that may be due to an old age illness.
The biggest excitement of the entire walk was a 4-inch worm heading
south on the walk. I suppose it was the morning rush hour and he was
doing every bit of five feet an hour. Molly thought he was a little
piece of puppy spaghetti but I pulled her away just in time to save
the worm's life. It's the tiny little things that are interesting if
you pay close attention. Molly is a self-appointed inspector. Her nose
and eyes are only three or four inches off the ground when she walks
and she absolutely does not miss anything. Sure had a world
series-type ballgame with her last night. When we got through, she
drank a bunch of water and stretched out on the cool tile. Life goes
on.

...Fine Week Ahead...

Get ready for a fine week of weather here across Central Alabama.
Fall officially begins today as the autumnal equinox occurs at 10:44
a.m. CDT. We will experience some of the typical weather fare that
you would expect in autumn in Alabama. Expect warm days with good
amounts of sunshine, fair nights with comfortable temperatures and low
humidities.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: At the surface, high pressure is centered over
eastern Canada this morning. A ridge extends from this anticyclone
southwestward all the way into Texas. A weak trough is evident in the
mid and upper levels of the atmosphere over Alabama and the Deep
South. The trough produced showers over the South for the past few
days, but as the trough moved eastward yesterday, showers over Central
Alabama were shoved into Georgia. The trough will continue to push
east today and it could cut off into an upper low off the coast of the
Carolinas and Georgia. It may still play a role in our weather by
late in the week as well as a role in the eventual track of
prospective Tropical Storm Kyle.

OUR FORECAST: Skies cleared late yesterday over Central Alabama as
the trough axis began to shift to the east. It was a beautiful night
with fair skies and seasonably cool readings in the upper 50s to lower
60s. Get used to those. They will be common for much of the week
ahead. A little patchy fog developed overnight, primarily in areas
that saw rain over the weekend. Skies will be mostly sunny today with
just a few clouds. That could well describe the sky conditions
through at least Wednesday. Highs will warm into the lower and middle
80s each day with all of the sunshine. By Thursday, the upper low to
the east may retrograde (or move westward) and could spread a few
showers into eastern sections of the state as early as Thursday night.
They could persist into the weekend.

TROPICS: The disturbance (93L) over Puerto Rico continued to show
increasing thunderstorm activity overnight. Wind shear is moderate in
the vicinity of the disturbance and ocean temperatures are warm, so a
tropical depression is expected to form soon. The system is moving
slowly to the north or north northwest. It is expected to become a
tropical storm by Tuesday. It would become Kyle.

That is if a storm that is approaching Portugal does not develop
tropical characteristics first. 93L could go on to become a hurricane
later this week. The eventual track holds some threat to the
Mid-Atlantic states or New England, or perhaps Bermuda. But in the
present, life threatening flooding and mudslides are ongoing on Puerto
Rico. Up to 16 inches of rain may fall over the island. Rainfall
rates were as high as four inches per hour in some locations last
night with the tropical convection.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The area around Birmingham was hard hit by
flash flooding after very heavy rains fell during the early morning
hours Three to five inches of rain fell in only a few hours, with some
areas picking up over seven inches. Some of the worst damage was in
the Vestavia and Mountain Brook areas.

...Fine Fall Weather Ahead...

Fall officially begins on Monday and the coming week will give us some
of the best that autumn usually has to offer in Alabama: warm,
sunshine filled days, clear, comfortable nights and lower humidity.

A FEW LIGHT SHOWERS: A few light showers have continued through the
morning hours over Central Alabama. They will continue moving
northeast through the afternoon. Rainfall amounts will be light and
spotty. Skies have cleared north of I-59, with only breaks in the
clouds to the south. Skies will be mostly sunny over the northwestern
third of Alabama this afternoon, and partly sunny south of there.

THE WEEK AHEAD: That pesky trough that has been to the west of
Alabama for the past few days is weakening and will move on out to the
east today. This will eliminate the overrunning process that has been
in place, allow skies to clear out and eliminate the chance of
showers. Now, we could still use the rain, but the fall preview will
be nice. As high pressure remains anchored over New England, it will
be the dominant player in our weather for the first part of the week
with a continued easterly surface flow drawing dry air into Alabama.
This means lots of sunshine with highs in the lower 80s and lows
ranging between 58-64. There are still indications that some sort of
hybrid tropical/subtropical low will form near the coast of the
Carolinas by late in the week. This would serve to turn our winds to
the north, bringing in more relatively cool, dry air. If the upper
level low associated with this system really gets would up and moves
westward, it could result in some showers wrapping into East Alabama
from Georgia late in the week, possibly as early as

TROPICS: The tropical wave over the eastern Caribbean has continued
to gain organization over the past twenty four hours and a tropical
depression is forming. Air Force recon was just arriving to
investigate. The consensus in the models is to move it north
northwestward, with a possible northwest turn by day five. There is
some hint that it could curve toward the Northeast
U.S., possible the New York area or New England. The GFDL makes it a
hurricane by Tuesday morning. The HWRF is a little slower, but does
bring it to hurricane intensity as it passes west of Bermuda.
Interests from North Carolina to New England will have to watch this
one in the week ahead. This system is bringing extremely heavy
rainfall to Puerto Rico, where flash flood warnings are in effect.

NATIONAL NOTES: Severe weather is possible today over the Plains
states ahead of a trough moving out of the Rockies. There should be
sufficient instability and shear for a couple of supercells over parts
of the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and eastern Colorado. Large hail and
damaging winds will be the primary threats. Temperatures across the
contiguous 48 states on Saturday ranged from 27F at Polebridge,
Montana to 105F at Bullhead City, Arizona.

ON THIS DATE IN 1938: The New England Hurricane of 1938 surprised
weather forecasters who thought the storm was headed out to sea,
hitting Long Island and then moving across New England with 100 mph
winds. Meteorologists had thought the storm was headed out to sea,
and the storm caught everyone by surprise. The water in downtown
Providence, Rhode Island rose to nearly fourteen feet. Waves of 30-40
feet on top of the storm surge caused incredible damage on the Rhode
Island and southern Massachusetts coastlines. A total of six hundred
people died. Damage was figured at $387 million in 1938 dollars.
Today, it would be astronomical.
