GOOD AFTERNOON:  Where, O where are my cumulus clouds?  Oh, where, O where could they be?  As I write this at noon, the skies over North and Central Alabama are mostly bright blue.  Puffy fair weather clouds were beginning to form over the Tennessee Valley and South Alabama.   The morning balloon release from the NWS at the Shelby County Airport indicated that temperatures would have to reach about 83-84 degrees before we would see cumulus clouds forming, so there is still time.  Temperatures are on track for our expected high of 87 today in Birmingham.  Some outflow from Hurricane Jeanne is evident on visible satellite photos  over northern Florida and southern Georgia.  It may overspread parts of Southeast Alabama tonight and we might even see a canopy of cirrus clouds from the storm later as Jeanne turns northwest and then northward to the east of Alabama.  Showers could edge into Southeast and East Alabama late on Sunday through Monday, all thanks to Jeanne.

WHAT ABOUT JEANNE? Looking at those satellite loops, you are mesmerized by the spinning disk of clouds whirling slowly towards Florida.  It looks so quiet and peaceful from 22,500 miles up in space.  Down here on Earth, it is anything but beautiful or peaceful.  Hurricane Jeanne has been methodically gaining strength since yesterday afternoon.  By late morning, top winds had jumped to 115 mph, making Jeanne a category three hurricane.  This also made Jeanne the sixth major hurricane of the 2004 Atlantic season.  Jeanne will be the third major hurricane to make landfall in the United States this year (after Charley and Ivan.)  Frances was a category two storm at landfall, so it does not qualify as a major hurricane according to the definition.  According to my database of landfalling U.S. hurricanes, since 1900, there have been four other seasons where three major hurricanes have hit the U.S.: 1909, 1933, and 1954 and 1955.  No season has ever had four since 1900.  According to Frank Lepore at the National Hurricane Center, the four hurricanes that have hit Florida is almost a record.  Five hurricanes struck the state in 1851.  The center of Jeanne will move inland late this evening or early Sunday morning between West Palm Beach and Fort Pierce, very near where Frances came ashore three weeks ago.  Jeanne could become a category four hurricane before reaching the coast.  It will begin turning northwest and then north, moving through inland counties of the Florida Peninsula, pushing into southern Georgia and into South Carolina.
JEANNE AND YOM KIPPUR:  The NHC has been urging Florida residents to advise  their observant Jewish friends about the hurricane since they might not be listening to television or radio on this solemn day.  Yom Kippur ends tonight at sundown.

THE WEEK AHEAD:  As Jeanne passes to our east, our winds will shift from northeast to north, bringing us some slightly cooler air. The tight pressure gradient between Jeanne and high pressure will keep us breezy for the next few days, possibly into Wednesday.  We will stay under the influence of a cool, dry northerly flow through much of the coming week after Jeanne exits to the northeast.

...Jeanne Should Not Affect Us...

GOOD MORNING! But she may impact the hurricane-weary areas of the Florida
Peninsula. She is predicted to turn northward along the Florida coast,
potentially impacting the entire coast from Palm Beach to Charleston, South
Carolina. Jeanne is expected to intensify further and will likely be a
major hurricane with top winds of 115 mph or higher when she makes landfall.
The future course of Jeanne is uncertain and just a small change in
direction could result in different timing and a more direct impact further
northward along the coast. Preparations are well underway from South
Florida to South Carolina.

The good news for us here in Alabama is that the hurricane is not expected
to move toward the Gulf, although that can not be totally ruled out. If
she holds to her predicted course, the only effect we will experience should
be some breezy conditions from the tight pressure gradient between us and
the storm and possibly some high cirrus clouds.

FUN SATURDAY: It is a special weekend out at the Shelby County Airport. The
Birmingham Aero Club will be hosting its annual Wings and Wheels Air Show.
In conjunction with the event, the National Weather Service office will be
holding an open house from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. today and Sunday. Take I-65
to exit 234.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama, Auburn and UAB will experience fine weather at
their respective venues today. If you're looking for the Florida-Kentucky
game, it has been moved up to an 11:30 a.m. kickoff because of Jeanne. The
Gators' home opener already fell victim to Hurricane Frances.

OUR WEATHER: Just think partly cloudy. That will be the predominant theme
of the next seven days. At times it might be partly sunny, especially with
clouds from Jeanne. Pleasant temperatures will continue, with warm days in
the 80s and comfortable overnights in the 60s. Jeanne will spread
slightly cooler (2-4 degree) air our way later in the week, so those lows
will dip to around 60 by then.

IVAN'S SECOND FUNERAL: He is not the tropical storm with nine lives but he
is the closest thing to it. He made another landfall last night near the
Texas-Louisiana border and was north of Livingston in East Texas at midday
with winds all the way down to 10-15 mph. The National Hurricane Center has
issued their last advisory for the second time in this thriller. A friend
remarked this morning that maybe that is the last of Ivan unless he reforms
over Great Salt Lake. But wait a minute. Some of the track forecasts
suggests that Ivan's leftovers will drift back to the south to near Corpus
Christi and the Gulf Coast. Could he get into the Gulf again? Unlikely but
nothing is impossible for Ivan. After Ivan moved out into the Atlantic east
of the Virginia Coast, he ran up against a big high pressure area that
gently sent him southward and finally inland again over Central Florida and
into the Gulf where he was reborn yesterday. The National Hurricane Center
had quite an internal discussion whether to retain the Ivan name since only
part of his leftovers were still together.

HURRICANE JEANNE: She has already caused a human disaster of the first
order in Haiti but now we must watch and wait to see if she will strike
Florida. The official track forecast brings her onshore near Fort Pierce or
Melbourne early Sunday then north right along the Atlantic Coast of Florida
to Daytona, St Augustine, Jacksonville, then to near Savannah, Charleston
and Wilmington. If that track holds true (usually there are errors that far
ahead) the worst side of Jeanne will be offshore.

BACK HOME IN ALABAMA: We are hanging on with a dry forecast for at least the
next five days with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Nice tonight for all of the high school games, in the 70s
for the 7:30 kickoffs...mostly sunshine for the Citadel-Auburn game in
Auburn Saturday afternoon with near 85 at kickoff...dry weather also for
Alabama-Arkansas at Fayetteville, near 80 at kickoff...UAB hosts Memphis at
Legion Field in a 6 pm game, fair, dry weather with about 78 at kickoff.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: And I need to scrub it with soap and water, too, tiny
Molly footprints all over...USA extremes: 100 in Death Valley yesterday, 27
this morning in Gunnison and Alamosa, Colo., on this date in 1956, Hurricane
Flossy made a second landfall near Ft. Walton Beach in NW Florida with
hurricane conditions from Pensacola to Panama City...at Gulf Shores, Ala.,
it dumped 16.30 inches of rain.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly joined me at 8 last night for
a 15-minute power nap but we did not awaken till 11:30 pm with my head cold
cured...so then Molly was ready to play. After a late night walk, we had 30
minutes of active playing, chase ball, pull rope and wrestling...I cut away
and went to bed at midnight, I felt a kerplunk and she was right beside me
and asleep in 30 seconds...very pleasant early walk today...an old crow
sounded like he was making a speech or giving a newscast to the crow
community...a bright yellow butterfly followed us for 1/4 mile...while Molly
was doing her "main business" a bird flew over and it's shadow crossed
Molly...she jumped straight up and did a 180-degree turn trying to grab the
shadow...dumb dog. Life goes on.

...Jeanne Moves Toward Florida...

We will maintain a dry forecast through the weekend here in Alabama
despite all of the tropical activity. Lets take it storm by storm:

IVAN: Tropical storm Ivan made landfall (AGAIN!!) last night near
Cameron, Louisiana with sustained winds of 45 mph. Ivan is expected to
meander across southeast Texas during the next few days bringing heavy rain
and gusty winds. Lets hope Ivan does not loop back into the Gulf of Mexico
again.

JEANNE: This hurricane east of the Bahamas is headed toward the
Florida peninsula. Top winds are in the 105 mph range, and landfall is
expected Sunday somewhere between Daytona Beach and West Palm Beach. The
system is then forecast to turn north, moving to near Jacksonville Sunday
night, and then on to Myrtle Beach, SC on Monday. There is a chance that
Jeanne could grow into a major hurricane during the next 24 hours. Don't you
know Floridians have worn out their hurricane tracking maps.

KARL AND LISA: Karl is a hurricane in the north Atlantic, and will
become extratropical by tomorrow in the colder water as it moves toward
Iceland. Lisa is a weak tropical depression in the central Atlantic and
should move slowly to the north, and is no threat to land.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn will host The Citadel tomorrow (1:30 p.m.
kickoff) under a sunny sky and temperatures in the 83 to 86 degree range.
Alabama travels to Fayetteville, AR to play the Razorbacks at 2:30. The sky
should be partly sunny with temperatures in the upper 70s.

UAB will host Memphis at 6:00 p.m. at Legion Field. The sky will be
mostly clear, and the temperature at kickoff will be near 80 degrees,
falling into the 70s during the game.

DRY WEATHER CONTINUES: One weather model tries to crank in a slight chance
of showers for Central Alabama by Monday. We don't think it will happen, so
we're leaving our forecast dry all the way through the first part of next
week. Hard to beat these temperatures. Lows at night have been in the 50s
and 60s, but the afternoons will warm up a bit over the next few days. The
weather looks great for high school football games Friday night. We will
have a complete football forecast tomorrow, which will also include the
college games.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Born again Tropical Storm Ivan was approaching the coast
near the Louisiana-Texas border this afternoon with sustained winds of 60
mph. He will move ashore later today. One of the most worrisome things will
be 5 to 10 inches of rain expected to occur near the center along with a few
spin-off tornadoes. The NHC tracking chart suggests that Ivan, after
crossing the coast, will curve toward the west and eventually back to the SW
and by Sunday morning should be over South-Central Texas. The slow movement
could bring some flood problems. Meanwhile, Hurricane Jeanne with sustained
winds of 105, will move toward the west and then the NW and north. By Sunday
morning she could make landfall on the lower east coast of Florida near
where Frances moved ashore. Then she may move northward right along the
Florida east coast to landfall in South Carolina on Monday. This is all very
tentative this far ahead. Hurricane Karl is way out and will stay that way
as he passes south or SE of Iceland during the day Sunday.

WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA: I have a cousin who lives at Sylva in Western North
Carolina. She has been doing a good job of keeping me posted with
photographs and information about the serious flooding in that area. In an
e-mail today, she said a lot of major roads are still out-just washed away.
The Blue Ridge Parkway is closed and a big chunk of it is gone. That area
got a double whammy from Frances and Ivan.

THURSDAY THOUGHTS: What a difference a week makes...a week ago this
afternoon, flooding rains and damaging winds as Ivan tracked across Central
Alabama with the center passing just east of Birmingham...you can count me
as a big admirer of all the utility employees on the firing line as they
strive to restore power and phone service...USA temperature extremes
included 97 yesterday in Laredo, Texas and 18 this morning in Doyleville,
Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Never did I dream that when Little Miss Molly
walked into our living area 22 months ago, that she would quickly charm me
so much that my entire life has changed. Her tail was swishing rapidly and
she greeted us as if she had been here forever. She is still that way
today...so happy to see us even if we leave for a short time...I can walk a
short distance to the mail box and she is immediately waiting for me at the
front door when I get back. I can see the little bushy head watching my
every step...every time I take a 15 minute power nap, either in the recliner
or on the king-size bed, she curls up next to me to take her "power nap"
also...sure makes me glad that she likes me...makes life more enjoyable and
life goes on...she is waiting to play soccer with me now.

...The Tropics Are Active...

One week ago today major Hurricane Ivan moved through Alabama, on a track
from Gulf Shores to Selma to Birmingham and Gadsden. Almost hard to believe
we are still talking about Ivan this morning, and of all places, in the Gulf
of Mexico! The system was upgraded to a tropical depression last night, and
should move into the Louisiana or southeast Texas coast tonight.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Hurricane Jeanne is forecast to get very close to
the southeast U.S. Atlantic coast early next week, then moving parallel to
the coastline all the way from North Carolina to New England. The
circulation center could be close enough to land at times to create problems

with high wind and storm surge along the Atlantic coast.

Hurricane Karl is headed north toward Iceland, and Tropical Storm Lisa is
having a hard time surviving in the central Atlantic. Lisa might be absorbed
by another tropical disturbance just to the east, which might be upgraded to
tropical storm Matthew today. Confused enough? Bottom line is that these
systems should not bother the U.S. mainland.

AT HOME: We are pretty much going with a dry forecast for the next seven
days. A cold front should pass through Saturday night in dry fashion, and
will provide a fresh supply of cooler and dry air for Sunday and Monday.

SUMMER 2004: The average daily temperature for Birmingham wound up at 76.9
degrees, below the normal of 77.2 for summer. The hottest temperature was 95
degrees, recorded on July 14 and July 24. Birmingham's summer rain total was
20.27", well above the seasonal normal of 12.93. Of course, we can thank
Ivan for that.

...Fall Begins With A Sunny Day...

Today is the day of the autumnal equinox. The sun will be directly above the
equator at 11:30 a.m. local time, and astronomical fall will begin. We have
approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness, and the days
will keep getting shorter until the winter solstice just before Christmas.

We will continue to promise dry weather for Alabama through Friday. A
passing cold could squeeze out a few widely scattered showers over the
coming weekend, but we don't expect the rain to be especially widespread or
heavy.

ACTIVE TROPICS: Our trio of tropical systems in the Atlantic pose no
immediate threat to land. Hurricane Jeanne will meander east of the Bahamas
over the next few days, while Hurricane Karl moves northward through the
eastern Atlantic. Tropical storm Lisa is moving westward through the central
Atlantic, but at a slow pace.

Another disturbance over the far eastern Atlantic has the potential to grow
into tropical storm Matthew over the next few days. And, if all of that is
not enough, the remnants of hurricane Ivan are back in the Gulf of Mexico.
There is an outside chance it could become a tropical depression again over
the next few days as it moves to the west. The moisture with this feature
will bring rain to the Louisiana and Texas coast by the end of the week.

JEANNE A KILLER: When Jeanne passed over Haiti several days ago, it produced
widespread flooding and mudslides responsible for the deaths of over 700
people in that impoverished Caribbean country. Another 1,000 are missing.

SUMMER SNOW: On the last full day of summer over 6 inches of snow fell
yesterday in the mountains of Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.

...Blue Sky and Sunshine...

While we have lots to discuss today, the good news is that we expect
beautiful weather across Alabama for the next three to five days.
Temperatures will remain quite comfortable with only a slow warming trend.

TRIO IN THE TROPICS: Karl is a major hurricane in the eastern Atlantic, but
the storm should move northward and is no threat to land. Hurricane Jeanne
is east of the Bahamas in the Atlantic, and is expected to meander around in
basically the same place for the next five days and is no immediate threat
to land. Our third system, Lisa, is a tropical storm and is headed in a
westerly direction. There is a chance Lisa could turn northward before
affecting the Lesser Antilles, but computer models are all over the place
making for a low confidence forecast. And, in the far eastern Atlantic,
another disturbance near the Cape Verde Islands has the chance to grow into
tropical storm Matthew over the next few days.

IVAN WON'T GO AWAY: Oddly enough, what is left of former hurricane Ivan is
moving into the eastern Gulf of Mexico this morning. The mid level system
will keep moving westward, and could bring some generous rainfall amounts to
the Texas and Louisiana coasts late in the week. The upper air wind pattern
could actually favor Ivan regaining some tropical characteristics over the
next few days in the southern Gulf. This is almost like watching the
Twilight Zone.

FINAL IVAN NOTES: The official 24 hour rain total at the Birmingham Airport
from Ivan last week was 9.75", a new 24 hour rainfall record for the city.
And, the pressure dropped to 29.14" at 5:42 p.m. on Thursday, which is
apparently the lowest pressure on record for Birmingham based on preliminary
data from the NWS.

GREAT RECOVERY WEATHER: We could not have ordered more desirable weather as
Alabama continues to dig out from the long-lasting effects of Hurricane
Ivan. Not only do we have mostly dry weather, but temperatures are more
bearable for those multiplied thousands of homes still without electricity.
For most of the state, the dry weather should last into the weekend with
cool nights and fairly comfortable afternoons. The exception is a few
thunderstorms possible Wednesday and Thursday along the Alabama coast.

Incredibly, part of that moisture will come from the returning remnants of
Ivan, which ran into a big high pressure area and was bulged back southward
and was moving westward across Central Florida today.
We need to celebrate something, so let's cheer these pleasant low
temperatures this morning:

46 in Meridianville (north of Huntsville)
48 in Owens Crosswords
49 in Valley Head, DeSoto State Park, Russell Cave
50 in Pinson, Scottsboro, Ashland, Wedowee
52 in Ft. Payne and Cullman
54 in Anniston, Alex City, Fayette, Clanton
55 in Gadsden, Jasper, Auburn, Brewton

LAST THURSDAY: It was a horrible day and certainly not a time to be
lighthearted, but I did report to some folks that at least we didn't have to
worry about an ozone alert. At Birmingham Airport, the rainfall tally for
last Thursday amounted to 9.75 inches. Until that time, the most we had ever
had in 24 hours was 8.84 inches on July 6-7, 1916. That too, was from a
hurricane that had pushed into North Mississippi and stalled with the
remnants drifting east across the Birmingham area and causing widespread
major flooding in Alabama.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The active season continues. Three named storms in
progress today. Tropical Storm Jeanne was several hundred miles NE of the
Bahamas. She is expected to curve almost completely around and head back
south. Karl is already a powerful hurricane with sustained winds of 120. He
is expected to move almost due north through the heart of the Atlantic and
should be passing east of Nova Scotia Friday night and Saturday. Our newest
storm is Lisa with winds up to 60. She was moving westward way out in the
Atlantic. We will watch her.

STRONG HINTS OF A CHANGING SEASON: 29 this morning at Saranac Lake, New
York was the coldest in the lower 48 states. Up in Northern Canada, it was
hanging out around 1 below zero at Alert, the northernmost weather station
in North America. In Northern Utah, heavy snow warnings for the higher
elevations of the Wasatch Mountains, including the Alta area with 3 to 6
inches today and possibly 3 to 7 more inches tonight.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Just like old times on our early morning walk.
The Old Crow Creek was running again because of 8.79 inches of rain
Thursday. Little Miss Molly wanted to go wading, but I said no. A cool
post-hurricane breeze made it so pleasant...even the Old Crow Air Force flew
over-18 crows in one group! Two others landed later in the Old Crow Motel.
We had not seen any crows for a long, long time. Also we were greeted by a
cardinal and mockingbird. Another unseen bird in the underbrush was singing
like crazy-sounded like he was playing taps...great medicine for our
hurricane hangover and sleep shortages. Life goes on after every storm.

...Fall-Like Weather Continues...

GOOD MORNING! If you are like me, you are getting spoiled by all of this
fall-like weather. Our morning readings have been running some 4-7 degrees
below normal for this time of year. That's not going to change, at least
for one more morning, as we will see readings in the 50s again tomorrow.
The high pressure that has been in control of Alabama's weather from its
position in southern Canada will actually migrate southwestward over the
coming week. By the end of the week, it will be to our north. Now, that
pushy western trough will gradually try to break down the ridge over the
East, but it looks like it will hold together into the weekend.

Our temperatures will gradually begin to moderate slightly as we head toward
midweek, edging back toward seasonal norms. Clouds will gradually begin to
reappear by Thursday afternoon, but they will still allow plenty of sunshine
right on into the weekend. I can't get too excited about rain chances
before the weekend at the earliest, and maybe not even until Sunday.

IN THE TROPICS: Not much change in the status of Tropical Storm Jeanne,
wandering aimlessly northeast of the Bahamas this morning. The storm will
probably not be more than 325 miles from its present location by Friday
morning as it meanders between Bermuda and the Bahamas. It is expected to
become a hurricane. Hurricane Karl is a major hurricane, located about
1,000 miles east of the Leeward Islands, but it expected to recurve to the
north and remain over open waters. It is forecast to become a Category 4
hurricane, at least... Finally, Tropical Depression thirteen may be Tropical
Storm Lisa by the time that you read this. The storm is located some 1,600
miles east of the Windward Islands. Lisa could be a problem, except Karl
probably won't let her. The proximity of Karl may stifle Lisa's development
somewhat, although she is still expected to become a hurricane. And he will
leave the door open for her to recurve also. Thanks, Karl! We owe you a
big one!

==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: On the weather maps this afternoon, we find a trough over
the Northeast, a large ridge of high pressure over much of the eastern
United States and a large trough over the western states. At the surface, a
huge ridge extends from high pressure over Canada down into southeastern
Texas. This ridge is responsible for giving us the fine weather that we are
currently experiencing. The upper trough in the west is extremely powerful
for this time of year and will build into the southwest states and toward
the Rockies and Upper Plains this week. This will push a low pressure
system northeastward toward the middle of the country and drag a cold front
into the Southeast by the weekend.

TROPICAL SYSTEMS: Tropical Storm Jeanne is located north of the
southeastern Bahamas. The future track is uncertain at this time, but it
poses no immediate threat to the United States. It is expected to wander
around in the open ocean between the Bahamas and Bermuda for the next five
days. There is some chance that it could eventually be pushed back toward
the East Coast. Hurricane Karl is a major hurricane now, with top winds of
125 mph, which could go slightly higher, but Karl should not come close to
any land area during its life. Another strong disturbance is located
nearly 600 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands this afternoon. It
will likely become Tropical Depression Thirteen shortly. When it is named,
it will be Lisa.

OUR WEATHER: Cool, dry air and easterly breezes are keeping our readings
mild this afternoon despite full sunshine. With low dewpoints tonight,
readings will drop into the 50s across much of the area once again. Weather
for the next two days should be very similar to what we have been
experiencing this weekend, with near total sunshine, warm days (highs near
80) and comfortable nights (lows in the 50s) through Tuesday. We may see an
increase in clouds by midweek as a pronounced easterly flow off the Atlantic
begins to setup, increasing our moisture levels. Our next rain chance might
come with the approaching front by late in the week.

HURRICANE GEORGE-1947: On this date in 1947, the same hurricane that had
struck South Florida two days earlier passed directly over New Orleans LA,
where the eye was 25 miles in diameter as it passed. The barometer in New
Orleans dropped to 28.61 inches as the storm passed. Nicknamed "George" by
Weather Bureau forecasters in Miami after a practice begun by military
meteorologists some years before, the storm brought devastating storm surge
of up to 12 feet along the Mississippi coast at places like Gulfport, Biloxi
and Bay St. Louis. Sustained one minute winds of 110 mph were measured in
the Crescent City. As the storm moved inland, it still carried intense
winds. Sustained winds were measured to 96 mph in Baton Rouge with gusts
estimated to 120 mph. During its 17 day life, the large and powerful Cape
Verde hurricane caused $110 million in damage and 51 fatalities in the
United States. Advance preparations taken by residents in response to
effective U.S. Weather Bureau warnings were credited with saving many
lives.

...Summer To Return...

GOOD MORNING! Refreshing! Readings across the area this morning will be
almost unanimously in the 50s. I am fairly certain that we will see at
least a couple of readings in the 40s from some of the normally colder
locations. There is a little bit of patchy fog out there, especially in the
valley locations where colder air has pooled. It will burn off quickly, and
we will enjoy a day of near total sunshine. We will enjoy another day like
today on Monday. A pronounced easterly flow will develop by Tuesday or
Wednesday, thanks to a monster high over the Northeast, and may spread more
clouds our way by then. Our next rain chances will come later in the week.

WHO 'YA GONNA CALL? When your rainfall deficit seems to be steadily
growin'? When your grass is slowly turning' brown" Who 'ya gonna call?
Droughtbusters. Nothing better for busting a drought than a tropical storm.
In a single day, we went from a deficit of over five inches to a surplus of
nearly four inches.

IVAN FLOODING: I believe that we narrowly dodged a major bullet with
potential flooding with Ivan here in Central Alabama. Two factors saved us.
Number one: the storm did not slow down as anticipated over North Alabama.
Secondly, there was little precipitation in the southwestern semicircle of
the storm. That means that we got only about half of the precipitation that
we might have received. As I saw those rainfall amounts piling up in
Trussville, I could envision about May 2003 flooding event. Then we got
eleven inches in just a couple of hours. As the rainfall reached 7.90
inches, most of it in four hours, the Cahaba River was once again lapping at
the bridges in the northeast Jefferson County town. Fortunately, the rain
began to taper off, and there was very little after the center passed.
There was some serious flooding in the Birmingham area, but nothing like
there might have been.

IN THE CORNER: Alright, I got put in timeout by a couple of readers today
who did not take kindly to my suspenseful ending about the 1926 Miami
Hurricane. Just what was the disaster that happened two years later? Read
about it in today's Weather Talk.
