...Dangerous Cold Continues...

Extremely cold weather continues to hold Alabama and much of the South in its icy grip this weekend. This very cold weather will continue until Tuesday, when things will begin to warm up. We will stay dry until Friday night, when a big wet weather system will roll in for the weekend.

HARD FREEZE OVERNIGHT: Most of the area experienced a hard freeze overnight. Some lows included: 16F in Birmingham, Calera, Anniston and Muscle Shoals; 15 in Tuscaloosa, 14 in Pinson and Vinemont; 13 in Huntsville, Decatur and Ft. Payne; 12 in Crossville and Meridianville. With partly cloudy skies today, highs will struggle to reach freezing. Wind chills will be in the +5-+15F range. A few snow flurries are possible, as evidenced by snow flurries observed at Nashville and Columbus, MS this morning.

ANOTHER HARD FREEZE TONIGHT: Some cloudiness actually helped keep temperatures out of the single digits last night. With skies clearing tonight, readings could be a couple of degrees colder on Sunday morning.

STILL COLD SUNDAY: Sunday will feature mostly sunny skies, but daytime temperatures will still be in the 30s. Sunday night will see another hard freeze. With clear skies and light winds, temperatures will drop into the teens once again.

NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday, the big trough that has been piping our weather directly in from Canada will lift out, and our highs will rise into the upper 40s on average. But another strong disturbance will drop into place behind it by early Tuesday, bringing in a reinforcing shot of colder air. This will keep Tuesday highs in the lower and middle 40s. Then the warm up will begin for real as the trough departs and is replaced by a ridge of high pressure. Our surface winds will turn around to the south by Wednesday and we will see 50s. It will feel like Miami…literally! The high in Miami today? 54.

WEATHERBRAINS: It was a delightful chat this week with Hannah Bayman, a Weather Presenter for the BBC's Look North news program. Or should I say programme? Learn how her day goes, how the Brits are as weather obsessed as we are, and find out about the terrible floods in Cumbria in November. This week, author David Laskin will talk about his book on the 1889 Blizzard that killed dozens of schoolchildren on the Plains. He will also talk about weather in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, which is his home. Denver's Mike Nelson will be the Guest Panelist. We will giveaway his fabulous Colorado Weather Almanac. Get your chance to win by following us on Twitter @weatherbrains. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: One of the worst ice storms on record was coming to a close . The ice storm struck upstate New York and northern New England during January 5-9, causing extensive damage to trees and power lines and taking 16 lives. A one-to-three-inch coating of ice left as many as 500,000 utility customers without power and made road travel nearly impossible. In Maine, four out of five residents lost electrical service. This was the worst ice storm to hit the country since February 1994, when a storm over the Southeast caused billions of dollars worth of damage. as the Savior, Lord and Treasure of your life? What you believe
about Jesus determines how you live your life...from the way
you treat people...to what you treasure most.

Join us this Sunday at Hunter Street Baptist Church in Hoover.
We'll look at what it means to truly believe...and why it matters.

Hunter Street is located at 2600 John Hawkins Parkway (Hwy 150)
in Hoover. Sunday service times are 8:05, 9:30 and 10:45 a.m.

...Cold Weather Continues...

It is another extremely cold morning across Central Alabama with widespread readings in the teens and another hard freeze. Some of the normally colder valley locations likely dropped into the single digits. Temperatures will remain below freezing until Sunday afternoon across the area, with readings this afternoon near 30 degrees. Lows tonight will average range from 10-16F. Expect a few very light snow flurries today as colder air continues to funnel into Alabama. Sunday will feature sunny skies with highs in the middle 30s. It's back in the teens Sunday night, hopefully for the last time for a while.

CHANCE TO TIE CONSECUTIVE SUB 25F STREAK: This morning is the 8th consecutive morning with temperatures of 25F or lower. According to our current forecast, lows will be below 25F for the next three days, bringing the total to 11 days. If this happens, it will tie the longest consecutive streak of sub-25F readings, which was set in the extreme cold wave of 1940.

LAKE AND POND WARNING: From the NWS Birmingham…WITH THE EXTENDED PERIOD OF COLD TEMPERATURES...MANY AREA LAKES AND PONDS HAVE FORMED A LAYER OF ICE ON TOP. PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THIS ICE LAYER IS LIKELY TO BE QUITE THIN...AND WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SUPPORT THE WEIGHT OF AN INDIVIDUAL. IT MAY BE TEMPTING FOR KIDS TO VENTURE OUT ONTO ICE COVERED PONDS AND LAKES. DO NOT DO IT. ANYONE ATTEMPTING TO CROSS AN ICE COVERED BODY OF WATER RUNS THE RISK OF BREAKING THROUGH THE ICE...WHICH COULD LEAD TO DROWNING OR DEATH BY HYPOTHERMIA.

A NEW WORK WEEK: Monday will feature a bit of a warmup, with highs in the upper 40s. Tuesday, we will take a step backwards in the temperature department, with a passing disturbance bringing in a little shot of reinforcing cold air. But by Wednesday, the huge high pressure system that has delivered all the cold air into the U.S. will finally push east of us, bringing us southerly winds for the first time in a long time and a return to the 50s. We go back below freezing Wednesday night, and up into the 50s Thursday. But by then, a powerful low pressure system will be forming along the Texas coast. This system will be a major weathermaker for us here in Alabama next weekend. Rain will probably arrive Friday night. Saturday looks very wet.

WEATHERBRAINS: This week's episode will feature author David Laskin, the author of the book The Children's Blizzard, which tells the fascinating story of the 1888 blizzard that caught residents of the northern Plains unaware, and resulted in the deaths of many children. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 2007: Frost was reported in New Delhi, India for the first time in 70 years when the temperature fell to 32F. The last time that had happened was January 16, 1935. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter @wxhistorian.

...Still In A Deep Freeze...

HAS CANADA MOVED SOUTH: Today was not a good day for golf, jogging or swimming. This one fact will explain why. At midday, it was only 20 at Birmingham with a brisk wind chill of 7. Up on Mt. Cheaha it was only 17 with a wind chill of 2. Even the weather map looks unfriendly today. At the surface, a very strong high-pressure ridge stretched from Texas to Southern Manitoba. On the east side of that ridge, very cold air from the Great Northland continued to be transported down into the Southeast USA. This morning snow flurries were widespread across North and Central Alabama. Some continued this afternoon.

During the night major travel problems developed when water on the roads quickly froze and became a skating rink. Even at midday numerous accidents were reported in Randolph County on Highway 48 between Wedowee and the Georgia line and between Wedowee and Lineville. Two of those involved 18-wheelers that completely blocked the road. Numerous roads were still closed late this morning in Cleburne County. In Clay County, most county roads were still closed. Those East/Central Alabama reports were also typical of extreme NE Alabama.

WHEN WILL IT GET WARMER: Not right away and the pesky old wind chill index adds to the discomfort. The wind chill will be zero at times tonight and most of tomorrow. It gets a little warmer by Monday afternoon and a little more on Tuesday. Highs on those two days will be in the 40s. We believe the temperature will stay below freezing all day Saturday with a brisk NW wind. We are calling for mid 30s Sunday afternoon, but there should be a hard freeze again tonight and Saturday night.

AT THE BEACH: I know you are probably not going, but some very unusual cold weather is affecting the Alabama coast. Another hard freeze is expected to night with lows between 16 and 20. The wind chill may drop as low as zero to minus 10 after midnight. The low Sunday morning should be 22 and with a high of 46.

THE OVERNIGHT DEEP FREEZE: Check out these low temperatures:

8 Hytop
11 Hamilton, Moulton
12 Decatur, Cullman, Jasper, Grantley, Muscadine
13 Huntsville, Russellville, Pinson, Scrougeout
15 Roebuck, Ashville, Hazel Green
16 Birmingham, Alexander City, Camp Hill

ROAMING: 33 below zero at Minot, North Dakota...29 below Atqasuk, Alaska...80 yesterday Burbank and San Diego...8 below this morning on Mt. LeConte with 18 inches of snow...109 is the high for Saturday and Sunday at Meekatharra, Australia where they are enjoying summer.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Seems like there is always something to upset my little 8-pound pal known as Molly. In the midst of the Alabama/Texas game last night, the battery got low in the control panel of our security system and it emitted a short beep every few seconds and then it would stop. Little Miss Molly immediately went to one of her safe places that she uses during fireworks and thunderstorms. We can be walking on the track and, if she hears a bumping noise from an industrial site all the way across US-11, she immediately does a 180 and heads home. Life goes on.

...An Arctic Chill...

BIG TIME COLD: We begin this January day in Alabama with a new surge of Arctic air blowing into the state. Temperatures will be in the 14 to 19 degree range early this morning, and lingering moisture left on the roads will be all ice, so be extra careful this morning as you drive into work or school. As of fax deadline time late last night, all roads in Etowah County were closed due to ice, along with roads in the city of Oneonta. Major icing problems were also reported over parts of Calhoun, St. Clair, Cleburne, Randolph, and Talladega Counties. Road conditions should slowly improve today thanks to evaporation/sublimation.

Most Alabama communities will fail to reach the 30 degree mark today, and throw in a brisk northwest wind of 10 to 20 mph, we will experience wind chill index values in the 0 to 10 degree range much of the day. And, few scattered snow flurries are not out of the question.

FRIGID WEEKEND: The weather won't change much tomorrow. We will begin the day in the 10 to 15 degree range, followed by a high only in the mid to upper 20s with wind chill index values in the single digits at times. And, once again, a few snow flurries or snow showers are possible as a disturbance rides down the back side of the upper trough over the eastern U.S. Then, temperatures will drop down to near 10 degrees early Sunday, with single digits likely for the colder valleys across the northern half of the state. We should finally ease above the freezing mark again Sunday afternoon with a high in the mid 30s.

NEXT WEEK: The warming trend will be more noticeable Monday, with afternoon temperatures reach the 40s. At this time it looks like the next chance of precipitation will come toward the end of next week, and in the form of rain.

YESTERDAY'S SNOW: Some of the heaviest snow in Alabama yesterday came during the evening hours, with totals of 1 inch reported over parts of Clay, Cleburne, and Talladega Counties in East Alabama. A dusting to 1/2 inch was common over the northern third of the state, but Tuscaloosa and Birmingham were short changed with only a trace amount of snow. A nose of warm air about 2,000 to 4,000 feet off the ground turned much of the precipitation into rain along and south of I-20, where the moisture was the best.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...The Arctic Express...

BITTER COLD NEXT FOUR NIGHTS: That does not mean that the daytimes will be delightfully warm. In fact, we believe the temperature will stay below freezing from now all the way through Saturday night and Sunday morning. This is a rather unusual winter event for Alabama. Overall, we have experienced some of the coldest weather in a number of years.

Snow spread into NW and West Alabama very early this morning and worked its way across the north and central counties as the day wore on. We had a large number of reports of light accumulations and even some icy roads and bridges. The wide band of snow moved east a little quicker than anticipated, so the total accumulation fell short of earlier projections. The temperature remained a few degrees above freezing most of the day and that allowed for some melting. That alone is creating a different problem. It means that when the temperature plummets tonight, the melted snow on the highways and bridges will quickly freeze into black ice. Much caution is advised because of that.

We will still have some more snow flurries Friday morning and even a few on Saturday, but overall the bitter cold will transition into the main weather story. For the next several nights we will have a damaging freeze capable of bursting water pipes if they are not well protected. We are calling for a low of 15 tonight, 12 for Friday night and 9 above zero for Saturday night. All precautions should have already been taken for those low temperatures. The wind chill will be below zero at times tomorrow and Saturday. Just a tiny bit of news: early next week after a low of 17 Monday morning, a relatively mild 45 for Monday afternoon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Difficult to tell which subject had the most conversation today—snow or football. Tonight in Pasadena, Alabama meets Texas for the BCS National Championship in the historic Rose Bowl Stadium. The weather could not be better. During the game it will be clear with temperatures in the 60s in the first half, lowering to the 50s in the second half.

ROAMING: The current arctic air outbreak is going to be historic. Numerous states are really having a battle with low temperatures and snow. Not surprised, because a huge high pressure area with a central pressure of 1051 MB keeps pumping globs of very cold air southward. The weather is unbelievable in the Midwest with near blizzard conditions. Huge lake-effect snows with all this. Some place in Western New York State has received over 60 inches of snow during the last week from lake-effect snow...cold temperatures this morning: a bitter 36 below zero at Havre, Montana and 20 below at Notak, Alaska...57% of the lower 48 states has a blanket of snow.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Yes, that little 8-pound girl had me out early this morning for what was supposed to be a half-mile walk. Little Miss Molly does not take well to sudden noises. About 100 yards up the track, after she had done her morning chores, she heard someone at a nearby house hammering. She stood at erect attention, slowly turned on her paws, and headed home. My guess is that it sounded like a firecracker to her. I was glad to see her head home because I was way behind on my work after being awake most of the night. Life goes on.

...Snow, Then Bitterly Cold...

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY: We don't see much snow here at this low latitude, so today we will all find out if we will be delighted or disappointed in the amount of snow that falls. A strong disturbance aloft will bring good dynamic forcing across the Deep South, and with Arctic air in place we will forecast periods of snow throughout the day for about the northern half of the state. We believe the best chance of 1 to 2 inches of snow will be generally along I-20 (Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston), and south for about 50 miles down toward Greensboro, Marion, Clanton, Sylacauga, and Ashland. North of Birmingham we expect about 1 inch, and down around U.S. 80 a wintry mix of sleet, snow, and rain is likely. Snow will likely begin early this morning over West Alabama, but the primary window for snow is from about 9:00 this morning through 8:00 this evening. Looks like all of the snow will be out of the state by 10:00.

TRAVEL ISSUES: Snow could begin to create slick spots on bridges and high terrain roads in the 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. time frame today. Icy travel is likely from 4:00 p.m. all the way through mid-morning tomorrow, and again the bulk of the problems will come on bridges and roads over the ridges of North and Central Alabama. The good news is that is snow, not freezing rain, that limit the severity of the problems, but slick spots will be a very real problem tonight into tomorrow morning.

Evaporation should lead to better conditions by tomorrow afternoon, even though temperatures will stay below freezing. You will have to watch for any leftover moisture tomorrow night and over the weekend; isolated icy patches will remain possible. But, generally speaking, travel should not be too bad tomorrow night into Saturday and Sunday.

POWER: With light snow like this, no major power outages are expected. An outage yesterday morning over West Alabama involving about 17,000 people was related to a transmission line problem. I spoke with someone from Alabama Power on the phone yesterday, and they expect to have plenty of capacity to meet the heating demands during the snow and the following Arctic blast.

BITTER COLD: Tomorrow and the weekend will be brutally cold. Highs in the 20s with single digit wind chill values tomorrow and Saturday, and lows in the 8 to 12 degree range both Saturday and Sunday morning. If we have a decent snow cover, then those values could be lower. We reach the mid 30s Sunday afternoon, but many places will stay below freezing. In fact, looks like 80 to 90 consecutive hours of sub-freezing temperatures are likely for much of North Alabama from Thursday evening through Monday morning of next week. Keep all necessary cold weather precautions going for sure. Bring in the brass monkey.

NEXT WEEK: A moderating trend finally begins next week, with highs in the 40s by Monday and Tuesday. The next major weather system is due at the end of next week. For now it looks like a rain event.

...Alabama In A Deep Freeze...

CHANCE OF SNOW THURSDAY: Alabama is in a deep freeze and overall many sections of the state are experiencing the coldest weather in 25 years or more. The door is open all the way to the arctic. We already have another big bubble of arctic air headed our way, which is going to give us some extremely low temperatures over the weekend. In fact, this will be a dangerous cold weather situation. Even common sense will dictate that you dress warmly to avoid frostbite and, for sure, check on the elderly even if you do not know them. The older folks are more susceptible to extremely cold temperatures.

Yesterday in Mississippi an elderly man was found dead in his home. He died of hypothermia. He did not have any heat.

Another problem is space heaters that are left unattended. Without a doubt, people hear of several house fires. If those occur in the middle of the night, it increases the chance of fatalities.

NOW ABOUT THE SNOW: The infrastructure is already thoroughly chilled, including bridges, overpasses, elevated roadways and lesser travelled rural roads. Once the snow begins, it will not take long for it to start accumulating. Our best estimate now is that the snow will reach Central Alabama later tomorrow morning and continue during the afternoon and into the night. Average accumulation may be close to 1 inch, but a number of places may get 2 inches or more. Travel may become hazardous by Thursday afternoon and especially Thursday night.

AFTER THE SNOW: The snow will not completely end Thursday night. There will be a few lingering flurries Friday and even possibly a few on Saturday morning. However, the cold temperatures will be the main story and the main worry. After staying below freezing all day Friday, we look for lows across Central Alabama between 8 and 10 Saturday morning and Sunday morning. That is enough to burst water pipes, freeze up radiators and cause hypothermia if you do not dress warmly. It is time for the old common sense factor to kick in.

ROAMING NORTH AMERICA: Temperatures were below freezing this morning, deep into Central Florida, which means the citrus country. The low was 27 at Tampa. It will get even colder when this new push of arctic air spreads into that region...USA extremes in the last 24 hours included 84 in San Diego and lows of 32 below this morning at International Falls, Minnesota and 36 below at Arctic Village...here in Alabama by noon today, the temperature had been below freezing for 114 hours in a row. Some of the Alabama lows this morning included 5 in Grantley, 6 in Hamilton, 7 in Russellville, 8 in Ashby, Hokes Bluff, Lincoln and Millport.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama meets Texas in the BCS National Championship tomorrow evening in the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. Excellent football weather. It should be mostly clear in the 60s during the first half and 50s in the second half. High temperatures in that area will be in the low 70s through the weekend.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One thing for sure, this bitter cold does not cut down on the number of bathroom walks that Little Miss Molly expects and demands. Had a late walk last night at midnight. Boy, was it cold—even for me! Yesterday afternoon her boyfriend, Dino, the little Yorkie, came by and we had a big play session in the backyard. Dino is not as big as Molly. I have never seen a little dog that can run like one of those bullet trains in Japan. He and Molly played until they were exhausted. Life goes on.

...Snow Arrives in Alabama Tomorrow...

SNOW, THEN BITTER COLD: I would suggest the biggest hazard we will face in coming days is a brutally cold Arctic airmass that will settle in here Friday and Saturday, with potential to drive temperatures down into the single digits as far south as Birmingham. But, as we all know, the big buzz right now comes from the possibility of snow in Alabama tomorrow ahead of the Arctic blast. Let's try and answer your questions…

WHEN? Snow should enter West Alabama tomorrow morning, as early as 6:00 a.m. The primary window for snow will be from about 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

HOW MUCH? This won't be an especially heavy snow event; but one to two inches are very possible for Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, and Anniston, and then south to a line from York to Demopolis to Prattville to Lafayette. North of Birmingham we expect only a dusting to one inch due to limited moisture, and a wintry mix for Montgomery. The southern quarter of the state will see a cold rain.

WHAT ABOUT TRAVEL? Due to the low soil temperatures and cold highway infrastructure, slick spots are very possible by late tomorrow afternoon, into tomorrow night and Friday morning. The main problems will come on bridges, secondary roads, and roads that go across higher terrain. The good news is that there won't be any freezing rain involved here; it will be all snow. But, snow can be difficult to deal with on highways driven by folks that are not used to it.

ANY POWER OUTAGES? We sure don't expect any. Most winter storms responsible for big power outages are ice storms, that result from a long period of freezing rain. This one should just feature mostly light snow.

WHAT ABOUT SCHOOLS? I figure there will be some school systems that use their snow days on tomorrow and Friday, but officials won't make that call until tonight, or maybe even early Thursday morning. You will simply have to stay tuned for that.

BIG TIME COLD: Following the snow, the coldest air so far this season blows in here Friday. We are projecting a high only in the mid 20s, with single digit wind chill values. Then, we are forecasting a low Saturday morning of 9 degrees. If by chance we get a decent snow cover, it will be even colder than that. Saturday will remain very cold with a high only in the 20 to 25 degree range. And, we are looking at a 10 degree low at daybreak Sunday. Some Alabama communities will be below freezing for 88 consecutive hours from Thursday evening until Monday afternoon, when we should reach the 40s.

FRIGID NOTES: Coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was International Falls, MN with 32 below zero. Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s this morning as far south as Daytona Beach, Orlando, and Tampa, Florida.

...Snow Arrives Thursday...

THE ALABAMA DEEP FREEZE: It may seem like it is cold over the entire world. Not so, of course, because the thermometer is expected to reach 107 to 110 in Western Australia all week. It is their summer.

Enough of that. Back to frigid Alabama where we are experiencing some of the coldest weather in years. Ice was 3 inches thick early today on a farm pond in NE Jefferson County. Here is a short list of some of the morning lows around the state:

8 Hamilton
9 Russellville, Grantley
10 Hanceville, Hytop
11 Valley Head, Lincoln, Bluff Park, Pinson, Cottondale
12 Jasper, Ashville, Scrougeout, Ashby, Roebuck
13 Livingston, Munford, Oxford
14 Scottsboro, Huntsville, Cullman, Birmingham

Do not look for any short-sleeve shirt weather anytime soon. Our temperatures are going to stay very cold well into next week. It should still be below freezing at night at least through next Monday and Tuesday.

THE SNOW SITUATION: Most of it will occur Thursday and Thursday evening. We estimate accumulation of about 1 to 2 inches over a good part of Central Alabama. In most areas over the northern fourth of the state, we project a dusting to 1 inch. Down in South Alabama, a wintry mix, however, even at Gulf Shores the rain will mix with light sleet and light snow Thursday afternoon and possibly, briefly, to all snow Thursday evening, but with little accumulation.

To show you just how serious this cold air situation is, the low by Saturday morning should be between 15 and 20 along the Gulf Coast. Here in Central Alabama, we will be far below freezing every night into the weekend. Our coldest temperatures will be Saturday morning with an average of around 9 across Central Alabama, but look for some lows closer to zero to 5 in the NE Alabama valleys.

This, of course, is dangerous cold. We have already discussed all week about the necessity to protect life and property including plumbing, pets and plants. We cannot over emphasize that.

The snow on Thursday and Thursday evening will be a precursor to a resurge of bitter cold air from the North. The bitter cold is straight out of Canada. This could be our coldest weather in about 25 years.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Still looks good for the Alabama/Texas National Championship game Thursday evening in Pasadena. Mostly sunny dry weather in daytime with highs in the low 70s. The game should be played with temperatures in the 60s and maybe dropping to around 58 by the end of the game.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly, as usual, was ringing that little bell loud and clear as soon as she got out of bed this morning. Sometimes she has to be insistent to get her first bathroom break. The half-mile walk went well. She did not see Dino, her little sweetheart. She did see a large black dog that she has always been afraid of, but she wanted to go rub noses with him this morning because she had not seen any of her friends lately. I did not let her, instead i played ball with her. Life goes on....

...Some Snow Likely On Thursday...

BRING IN THE BRASS MONKEY: In terms of severity and longevity, this looks like it will be our most intense cold wave since 1985. As of late last night, some of the colder pockets across North Alabama had been below freezing for over 72 hours. The good news is that we expect a good supply of sunshine today and tomorrow, and afternoon temperatures won't be quite as cold. We are forecasting a high in the mid 30s today, followed by upper 30s tomorrow. While these figures are certainly better than our high of 28 yesterday, they are still 15 to 20 degrees below the average high of 53 for early January. And, tonight will bring another hard freeze with a low in the mid teens for most communities early tomorrow.

WHAT ABOUT SNOW: A rather vigorous wave aloft will pass over Alabama Thursday, and will bring a chance of snow to our state and much of the Deep South. For now it looks like moisture will be rather limited, and we are projecting only around one inch of snow for most communities. But, keep in mind the ground and highway infrastructure is very cold, and even one inch of snow will lead to some icy travel that will become problematic by Thursday night and Friday morning. The best chance of snow will come from about 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. Thursday. And, there could very well be a narrow band of heavier snow, but defining that right now is difficult. It could very well be somewhere over South Alabama where the moisture will be deeper. But again, for the northern half of the state for now we are forecasting a general one inch snow with potential for a little more in spots.

ANOTHER ARCTIC BLAST: Even colder air invades Alabama following the snow. Friday and Saturday will be coldest days, with highs only in the 18 to 23 degree range with wind chill values near zero at times. We are projecting an average low of 9 degrees above zero Saturday morning, but if we have snow cover and light wind, the low could be closer to 5. And, the colder pockets over North Alabama could very well approach zero. For Sunday morning, we are forecasting a low of 10 degrees. The air will be very dry and the sky should be mostly clear over the weekend.

REMEMBER: We always hear about tragic house fires during periods of extremely cold weather like this. Remember, use common sense if you have a space heater and don't put them close to anything that might catch on fire. And, if you know any elderly person that might not have an adequate source of heat, please go out of your way to check on them. It is rarely this cold in Alabama.

ICE BOX TIDBITS: The coldest spot in the nation yesterday morning was Orr, Minnesota with 40 degrees below zero. The cold air extends down into Florida, where hundreds of people lined up at shelters in Miami-Dade and Broward counties the past few nights.Yesterday's low at Miami Beach was 44; they will drop into the low to mid 30s this weekend.

...Some Snow Likely On Thursday...

The air will be very dry and the sky should be mostly clear over the weekend.

...Arctic Cold...

A PERSISTENT DEEP FREEZE: Just to give you two examples of how serious our bitter cold is, the NWS in Huntsville is expecting the temperature to stay below freezing day and night for at least 100 hours in a row. That has not happened since early 2001. The other example is from Muscadine in NE Alabama where the 33/40 Skywatcher reports it has been below freezing since nightfall Friday and was around 25 this afternoon.

You only have to look at a surface map to quickly grasp the seriousness of this cold air outbreak. A very strong high-pressure system extended from Canada down to Oklahoma and North Texas this afternoon. 2:00 temperatures were below freezing from Central Alabama and Central Mississippi all the way across the North Pole and into Northern Russia. Temperatures were hanging out between zero and 5 from North Missouri northward.

It so happens that all of that cold air is still pushing south and southeast toward Alabama.

DANGEROUS COLD: The situation in Alabama is such that we continue to urge everyone to take all precautions to protect outdoor pipes, plants and pets. Be sure to check your automobile radiator for sufficient antifreeze. Please do check on the elderly—even if you do not know them. They often suffer more than any other age group in this bitter cold.

THE GUN RELOADS: The big arctic air mass will send another strong surge of bitter cold into Alabama starting Thursday. Snow will likely develop in conjunction with threat and also from moisture in a low from Mexico. Some accumulation is likely across Central Alabama and other areas. How much is still a question mark and we and we can probably start mentioning the amounts starting tomorrow.

However, snow is not the main concern. After the snow ends, the temperature will drop to a bitter 12 degrees by Friday morning and to 8 above zero Saturday morning. The wind chill could drop as low as 5 to 10 below zero during that timeframe.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The weather looks good for the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena Thursday night. The morning low Thursday should be about 50 with an afternoon high of 72 to 75. This means that most of the game between Alabama and Texas will be played with comfortable 60s. There is no mention of rain in that area all the way through Sunday.

ELSEWHERE: USA extremes in the last 24 hours included 81 Sunday at Camp Pendleton, California and 36 below this morning at International Falls, Minnesota. The coldest in Alaska was 44 below at Ft. Yukon. The snow cover in the lower 48 states is still around 61%. A lot of the cold air coming across that snow pack will be aiming for Alabama.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: She only weighs 8 pounds, but Little Miss Molly insisted on me going for a walk around sunrise after I had only had a little over one sip of fresh coffee. I had a rare pullover coat and a hat on, so all that got cold were my face and hands. I do not ever remember owning a pair of gloves. Little Miss Molly had two sweaters on, so she took her time. Unfortunately, she performed both of her main bathroom incidents in an area covered thickly with dead leaves and pine straw. With my little blue scoop, I had to dig it out to dispose. I sure would like to know how many scoops I have done in the last seven years. Life goes on.

...Snow Possible Thursday...

Alabama continues in the grips of a severe cold spell and it won't be ending anytime soon. According to the National Weather Service, the record for consecutive days with lows 25F or lower is eleven. That record most certainly will be in danger before this cold spell in finished. The interesting thing is that we will likely set very few record daily lows during it. As we have been saying, it is the protracted nature of the cold that will make it especially dangerous.

FOR YOUR MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY: Things are getting off to a cold start across Alabama this morning. Parts of North Alabama experienced a hard freeze overnight. Skies will be mostly sunny today, with temperatures struggling to get much higher than the middle 30s across Central sections. Another hard freeze is possible tonight across much of the area, with the average low around 15F. Tuesday will feature sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s. Teens again Tuesday night. In fact Tuesday night may be the coldest night so far. Wednesday will feature a little warm up ahead of the Thursday storm system. Warm up being a relative word, with highs around 40F on average.

THURSDAY SYSTEM: A strong disturbance rotating through the Ohio Valley will bring a chance of snow to Alabama. Temperatures on Thursday won't get above freezing during the day, which means that any snow that falls will stick. The wild card in snowfall amounts for Thursday will be a potential Gulf low. If it is stronger and stays to the south, parts of Central Alabama could have a significant snowfall. If it is weaker, snowfall amounts will be lighter. The system is not even over the U.S. yet, so we still need a little more time to track it. Even colder air will come in for the weekend, with highs not in the 20s and lows in the single digits.

CALIFORNIA WEATHER: Spectacular weather all week for all of the Alabama fans that have headed west for the BCS National Championship game. There could be some Santa Ana conditions by Thursday night, but hopefully there will be no fire threat during the game. Highs will be well into the70s each day. Lows will be in the mid 40s to lower 50s. Just about perfect.

WEATHERBRAINS: Some of the upcoming guests on the netcast that's all about weather include Hannah Bayman from the BBC, Brian Neudorff (the NASCAR weatherman), Mike Nelson from Denver, author David Laskin, Corey Ann Walton from the National Hurricane Center, storm chaser/photographer Dan Robinson and radar expert Les Lemon. We will have two specials on Amateur Radio and Social Media and weather. It will be a fun year. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1982: Six to eight feet of snow fell in 26 hours at Squaw Valley, California. Serious mudslides affected San Francisco as three days of heavy rain dumps up to 25 inches in Marin and Cruz Counties. Thirty six people died in the storm, twenty eight in the mudslides alone. California's official 24 hour snowfall record was set at Echo Summit with 67 inches during this storm. Follow my weather history tweets on Twitter. I am @ wxhistorian.

...Brrr!...

We continue to herald the extremely dangerous cold that is impacting Alabama early in 2010. As James indicated in a blog post this morning, in terms of consecutive days with overnight minimum temperatures, the cold outbreak could rival some of the great ones of all time in Alabama. Throw in a Thursday potential wintry precipitation event, and this could become a historic event.

FIRE WEATHER WARNING: Hard to think about wildfires during extreme cold, but the threat is very real. Extremely low humidities, drier vegetation and a persistent northwest breeze means an elevated wildfire threat. Impact? Outdoor burning should be avoided, and special care should be taken with any potential ignition sources outdoors this afternoon.

HARD FREEZE TONIGHT: Temperatures will fall well into the teens across a wide part of North and Central Alabama tonight. Check antifreeze levels, wrap pipes, check on pets, family and neighbors.

PREPARATION: Weather forecasts are not just predictions of the state of the atmosphere at some future point in time. They are aids to help you in making weather-related decisions. We will do our best to give you the forecast from the best scientific tools available as well as years of Alabama weather forecasting experience, all the while keeping in mind the uncertainty of the state of the science and attempting to convey the risk associated with the expected weather conditions. All that said, you need to think about how the extended period of lows in the teens and highs barely making freezing for up to two weeks could impact you, your family, your friends, your neighbors, your pets, your property and your business. We know all too well that there will be a number of deaths in house fires over the next two weeks as people try to stay warm with dangerous heating devices. Check on elderly family and friends to see they are safe.

COLD. SNOW? The intense cold will continue as cold air continues to funnel into Alabama for the next several days. See the forecast for lows and highs. A strong upper disturbance will swing out of the Rockies on Wednesday. It will undoubtedly bring some of its own moisture along, but if it taps some Gulf moisture as it is likely to do, we may see a significant snow across North and Central Alabama. Being specific about accumulations right now is just a best guess from the latest data, but 3-5 inches of snow may fall in some places. It will be followed by some of the most bitter air we have see in quite some time with single digits or even lows near zero by next weekend.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tuesday, we will speak with Hannah Bayman of The British Broadcasting Corporation. She is a Weather Presenter in Cumbria and the northern part of Britain. Get daily updates on the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Europe's worst cold in 30 years continued to grip the continent for the eleventh consecutive day. Over 200 deaths were blamed on the cold temperatures which dropped to -15F in Gardelegen Germany. Parts of the Thames River in England froze for the first time since the end of World War II. ...Dangerous Cold...

Two main story lines right now in Alabama weather. Number one: the dangerous cold that will last for at least another week. Number two: the threat of snow Thursday. Let's work through the forecast.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: An upper level disturbance is swinging out of Arkansas this morning. It stirred up a good bit of clouds and even some snow showers last night as it swung southeastward through Kansas and Missouri overnight. Temperatures overnight reached the teens in many locations. You will notice some clouds today, even though the system is weakening. We can't rule out a few snow flurries as well, although chances are small. Readings will struggle to get to 35F today.

DANGEROUS COLD: Skies will clear tonight and cold air will continue to flow into the state. This will set the stage for a hard freeze, as temperatures will be 4-5 degrees colder than last night. Readings by morning should be in the teens over most of the area. Temperatures on Monday will struggle to rise above freezing north of I-20. Monday night may be the coldest night so far in this cold spell, with lows averaging 13F across the area. Tuesday afternoon readings will also struggle to get above freezing. Wednesday should be our best chance to see 40F in the next seven day as a new storm system approaches Alabama.

SNOW THURSDAY? A strong upper level disturbance swinging through the Plains and into the Ohio Valley will tap some Gulf moisture and spin up a low along the coast. This will spread snow into the state Thursday. Indications are that this system may have a chance to produce a general 2-4 inch snow for the state. We will be able to tell more about this system as we go through time.

FRIGID WEEKEND: Friday will feature clearing and windy conditions with temperatures struggling to reach freezing. Frigid air will spread into Alabama behind this system, and if there is a snow cover, we will see some frigid temperatures for the weekend, perhaps pushing 0F in some areas.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION FLYOVER: If you haven't seen the International Space Station fly over, you may get a chance tonight. Look to the south southwest just after 6 p.m. The Space Station will appear very bright as it streaks to the northeast. It will be at its highest about 6:04, about 30 degrees above the horizon to the southeast.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's hard to imagine that we are about to enter our fifth of producing the netcast that's all about weather. We have an exciting lineup of guests in store for 2010. Keep up with the latest news about the show on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 2008: Snow flurries were reported across the Florida Peninsula after an Arctic airmass moved into the area behind a strong cold front. Snow flurries were reported from Port Orange north to Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach. A hard freeze was reported all across northern and Central Florida.
