...Arctic Cold...

A PERSISTENT DEEP FREEZE: Just to give you two examples of how serious our bitter cold is, the NWS in Huntsville is expecting the temperature to stay below freezing day and night for at least 100 hours in a row. That has not happened since early 2001. The other example is from Muscadine in NE Alabama where the 33/40 Skywatcher reports it has been below freezing since nightfall Friday and was around 25 this afternoon.

You only have to look at a surface map to quickly grasp the seriousness of this cold air outbreak. A very strong high-pressure system extended from Canada down to Oklahoma and North Texas this afternoon. 2:00 temperatures were below freezing from Central Alabama and Central Mississippi all the way across the North Pole and into Northern Russia. Temperatures were hanging out between zero and 5 from North Missouri northward.

It so happens that all of that cold air is still pushing south and southeast toward Alabama.

DANGEROUS COLD: The situation in Alabama is such that we continue to urge everyone to take all precautions to protect outdoor pipes, plants and pets. Be sure to check your automobile radiator for sufficient antifreeze. Please do check on the elderly—even if you do not know them. They often suffer more than any other age group in this bitter cold.

THE GUN RELOADS: The big arctic air mass will send another strong surge of bitter cold into Alabama starting Thursday. Snow will likely develop in conjunction with threat and also from moisture in a low from Mexico. Some accumulation is likely across Central Alabama and other areas. How much is still a question mark and we and we can probably start mentioning the amounts starting tomorrow.

However, snow is not the main concern. After the snow ends, the temperature will drop to a bitter 12 degrees by Friday morning and to 8 above zero Saturday morning. The wind chill could drop as low as 5 to 10 below zero during that timeframe.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: The weather looks good for the BCS National Championship game in Pasadena Thursday night. The morning low Thursday should be about 50 with an afternoon high of 72 to 75. This means that most of the game between Alabama and Texas will be played with comfortable 60s. There is no mention of rain in that area all the way through Sunday.

ELSEWHERE: USA extremes in the last 24 hours included 81 Sunday at Camp Pendleton, California and 36 below this morning at International Falls, Minnesota. The coldest in Alaska was 44 below at Ft. Yukon. The snow cover in the lower 48 states is still around 61%. A lot of the cold air coming across that snow pack will be aiming for Alabama.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: She only weighs 8 pounds, but Little Miss Molly insisted on me going for a walk around sunrise after I had only had a little over one sip of fresh coffee. I had a rare pullover coat and a hat on, so all that got cold were my face and hands. I do not ever remember owning a pair of gloves. Little Miss Molly had two sweaters on, so she took her time. Unfortunately, she performed both of her main bathroom incidents in an area covered thickly with dead leaves and pine straw. With my little blue scoop, I had to dig it out to dispose. I sure would like to know how many scoops I have done in the last seven years. Life goes on.
