...Dangerous Cold Continues...

Extremely cold weather continues to hold Alabama and much of the South in its icy grip this weekend. This very cold weather will continue until Tuesday, when things will begin to warm up. We will stay dry until Friday night, when a big wet weather system will roll in for the weekend.

HARD FREEZE OVERNIGHT: Most of the area experienced a hard freeze overnight. Some lows included: 16F in Birmingham, Calera, Anniston and Muscle Shoals; 15 in Tuscaloosa, 14 in Pinson and Vinemont; 13 in Huntsville, Decatur and Ft. Payne; 12 in Crossville and Meridianville. With partly cloudy skies today, highs will struggle to reach freezing. Wind chills will be in the +5-+15F range. A few snow flurries are possible, as evidenced by snow flurries observed at Nashville and Columbus, MS this morning.

ANOTHER HARD FREEZE TONIGHT: Some cloudiness actually helped keep temperatures out of the single digits last night. With skies clearing tonight, readings could be a couple of degrees colder on Sunday morning.

STILL COLD SUNDAY: Sunday will feature mostly sunny skies, but daytime temperatures will still be in the 30s. Sunday night will see another hard freeze. With clear skies and light winds, temperatures will drop into the teens once again.

NEW WORK WEEK: By Monday, the big trough that has been piping our weather directly in from Canada will lift out, and our highs will rise into the upper 40s on average. But another strong disturbance will drop into place behind it by early Tuesday, bringing in a reinforcing shot of colder air. This will keep Tuesday highs in the lower and middle 40s. Then the warm up will begin for real as the trough departs and is replaced by a ridge of high pressure. Our surface winds will turn around to the south by Wednesday and we will see 50s. It will feel like Miami…literally! The high in Miami today? 54.

WEATHERBRAINS: It was a delightful chat this week with Hannah Bayman, a Weather Presenter for the BBC's Look North news program. Or should I say programme? Learn how her day goes, how the Brits are as weather obsessed as we are, and find out about the terrible floods in Cumbria in November. This week, author David Laskin will talk about his book on the 1889 Blizzard that killed dozens of schoolchildren on the Plains. He will also talk about weather in Seattle and the Pacific Northwest, which is his home. Denver's Mike Nelson will be the Guest Panelist. We will giveaway his fabulous Colorado Weather Almanac. Get your chance to win by following us on Twitter @weatherbrains. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: One of the worst ice storms on record was coming to a close . The ice storm struck upstate New York and northern New England during January 5-9, causing extensive damage to trees and power lines and taking 16 lives. A one-to-three-inch coating of ice left as many as 500,000 utility customers without power and made road travel nearly impossible. In Maine, four out of five residents lost electrical service. This was the worst ice storm to hit the country since February 1994, when a storm over the Southeast caused billions of dollars worth of damage.
