...Another Warm Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! As Snoopy used to type while sitting atop his
doghouse, "It was a dark and stormy night..." Last night was one of those
situations where we had very strong spin in the atmosphere. It was really
off the scale. Many tornado warnings were issued over southern Mississippi
into South Alabama, and there were scattered reports of wind damage. A
house was destroyed near Monticello, Mississippi around 7 p.m. Over North
Alabama, the instability was located above the surface, but even those
elevated updrafts were able to produce some strong gusty winds. The rough
weather was associated with an upper trough and cold front that pushed into
the state overnight, accompanied by a small low pressure system that zipped
along the front.

TODAY'S WEATHER: The rainfall ended quickly overnight ahead of the
front, and we should have a nice day. Any fog and low clouds behind the
front will burn off during the morning hours, allowing for a good bit of
sunshine today. Temperatures will edge into the lower 60s today.

WARMTH AHEAD: Tomorrow should be even nicer, with lots of sunshine
and a nice afternoon. Temperatures will rise into the lower 70s tomorrow.
Those same 70s will be common into midweek. Partly sunny skies should
prevail through Tuesday before thing begin to cloud up on Wednesday with an
increasing southerly flow and an approaching cold front. That cold front
will push a line of showers and thunderstorms into Alabama Wednesday night
into the early morning hours of Thursday. Things will turn sharply colder
behind this front.

RECORD BIN: Valdez, AK recorded a record high of 53 on Friday.
This is an all time January record there. The 53F at Kodiak, AK beat their
old record for the date by 9 degrees. Pensacola observed a record high
temperature of 78F yesterday.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The combination of black ice, dense fog and excessive
speed for the poor conditions caused a fifty-nine car pileup on I-80 near
the Salt Lake City, UT airport. Fourteen people were taken to hospitals,
but fortunately no one was killed.

MORE MILD WEATHER: January so far has been exceptionally mild across
Alabama. We had a brief cool down yesterday and last night, but that's over.
This afternoon a low pressure area was moving NE from the Texas coast. It
will track NE across West Tennessee tonight and into West Virginia by
tomorrow. For Alabama, it will pull a warm front northward and send our
temperatures back to the 70-degree mark by Sunday. Meanwhile, rain will
spread across the area late today and tonight. It should become rather
extensive overnight and end early Saturday morning. The heaviest rain will
be over the extreme NW where a few places could get around 1 inch or so.

Across Central Alabama, the total will be more like 2/3 to 3/4 of an inch.
Sunday weather looks ideal with mostly sunshine and about 70 degrees. A
little warmer on Monday. Next chance of rain will be the middle of next
week, mainly on Thursday.

WHEN WE WILL WE GO BACK TO THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE? Looks like a substantial
change to colder toward the end of next week-about Friday. We will likely
get some showers and storms ahead of that on Thursday. Models have been
rather persistent with that, as if they are trying to persuade us weather
humans.

PLACES THAT MAKE YOU SHIVER: 17 below this morning in Hibbing,
Minnesota...9 below with drifting snow in the polar bear capitol of the
world (Churchill, Manitoba)...100 inches of snow now on the ground at Alta,
Utah (ski area)...Flagstaff, Arizona still covered with 23 inches and
temperatures as low as 13 below in the area this morning...56 inches of new
snow at Lodgepole, California in the Sierra-Nevada range...52 below zero at
Summit, Greenland. That scientific research station is located atop the
Greenland icecap. If you wanted to go there now, you would have to land on a
15,000-foot snow runway with a ski equipped aircraft.

THE WEST: They are getting pounded again and snow in the mountains will
again be measured by feet instead of inches. Heavenly Ski Resort, in the
Sierra-Nevada range, got 110 inches from the last storm...more flash
flooding also for the lower elevations in California, Nevada and Arizona.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Partial success this morning in getting my
little princess, Little Miss Molly, back on schedule. We all went to bed at
11. I got up at 4:30 and little Miss Molly slept until 8. On our morning
walk, the old crows were back. It makes our day when we can see a lot of
birds. Molly has developed a new habit of wanting to chase the birds. This
means a 30% increase (bit of weather lingo there) in my chance of getting
whiplash...Molly probed into the thick hedgerow along the walking track
trying to see her friend Jo-Jo. She got her tail caught in a long brier and
couldn't get loose. She tugged and tugged and looked over her shoulder with
a real puzzled look. Then she looked up at me as if to say, "Well, big guy,
can't you help me?" She is so funny. Each time I look at her, I laugh, which
is good. The whole world needs to laugh a lot more. Life goes on and each
day is better than the day before.

...Rain Late Today and Tonight...

A wave of low pressure developing on a stalled front over central
Alabama should bring widespread rain to the northern half of the state late
this afternoon and tonight. The heaviest rain is expected to be near the
Tennessee border, where over one inch is possible. For places like
Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden, amounts should be closer to
one inch. The best chance of rain will come from about 3:00 this afternoon
through 10:00 tomorrow morning. We might even have a few embedded
thunderstorms as the air becomes somewhat unstable.

THE WEEKEND: As the rain moves out tomorrow morning, drier air
returns and we expect a clearing sky by afternoon with the mercury reaching
the 60s. Sunday should be a beautiful day with ample sunshine and an
afternoon high near 70 degrees.

The mild weather will continue into early next week as the upper air
winds will keep the cold air up north.

A MID-MONTH CHANGE?: Longer range computer model data suggests the
possibility of a sharp change to colder weather for Alabama in the January
15-16 time frame, so don't get used to this mild weather! We still have a
long way to go this winter.

ROAMING: Raleigh, NC soared to 73 degrees yesterday, equaling the
record high for the date. Coldest places in the nation yesterday morning
were Cook and Hibbing, MN; both cities dropped to 36 degrees below zero.
More heavy rain and mountain snow is ahead for California, where flood
watches and winter storm warnings are in effect through the weekend. Total
snowfall along the Sierra Nevada mountains this weekend will range from
three to five feet!

...Colder with a few Showers...

The leading edge of the brutally cold airmass that has covered much of the
nation this week will ease into Alabama today. Thankfully the upper air
winds won't allow the really cold air to move this far south, but
temperatures will be noticeably colder. Highs for the day will come during
the pre-dawn hours, and the mercury will fall slowly during the day. The
northwest corner of the state should reach the upper 30s, with upper 40s
possible as far south as Birmingham by midday. A few showers are likely as
well, but amounts should be relatively light.

Rain should become widespread tomorrow afternoon as a wave of low pressure
forms on the front. That rain will continue tomorrow night, but should end
early in the day Saturday. The sky should clear Saturday afternoon, and
sunshine will be out in full force on Sunday. Temperatures will warm back up
over the weekend, with 60s likely during the afternoon hours. And, early
next week, we could see low 70s again.

THE LONG RANGE: Longer range model data suggests a change in the upper air
wind flow across North America could allow much colder air to reach Alabama
in about 9 to 12 days, toward the middle of the month.

SNOW AND ICE: Calumet City, a suburb of Chicago, reported 7 inches of snow
on the ground late last night with the snow still coming down heavily. In
Wichita, KS, 60,000 people had no power last night due to a major ice storm
that downed trees and power lines. In Iowa, the community of Gilbertville
reported 8 inches of snow on the ground last night. Yesterday's high
temperature in Fargo, ND was 13 degrees below zero. Embarrass, MN was the
nation's ice box early yesterday with 43 degrees below zero!

SOME CHANGES IN THE WEATHER: We like to be up front, so please be
advised that our temperature forecast for the next few days could be right
on track or substantially off. This is due to a cold front arriving early
tomorrow and then going back north as a warm front on Saturday. We may have
to resort to the old time-proven method of coin flipping. Anyway, look at
our day-by-day forecast for all of the details.

In the rain department, we may see a few showers between midnight
and daybreak and a better chance of showers Thursday and Friday, although no
especially impressive rainfall amounts. Probably our best chance of getting
some decent rain will be later Friday and Saturday. At this time, we think
Sunday will be dry with quite a bit of sunshine.

THE CACTUS ARE FALLING DOWN: Ron Morgan is one of our e-forecast
subscribers in the Phoenix area. I want to quote his e-mail received
yesterday, "I tell you, this weather in Arizona is really getting weird. The
old desert just can't take this much water. Sadly, some of the 100-year plus
old cactus are falling over because the ground is so saturated. The rain
woke me up Monday night. It rained harder than I ever saw in 9 years of
living in Alabama. The water just lays on top of the ground until it
eventually runs off and there is no end in sight. The Salt River is actually
flowing-it looks like a real river."

In addition to Ron's report, yesterday in Arizona saw 2 feet of snow
bury Flagstaff, while at the same time the NWS in Phoenix had to issue a
tornado warning. Hail accumulated 2 inches deep in NW Phoenix.

BITTER, BITTER COLD: A life threatening 43 below zero at Embarrass,
Minnesota this morning. It was 39 below in Grand Forks, North Dakota with a
wind chill of 57 below...6 to 10 inches of snow expected in Chicago today
and tonight and 10 to 15 inches in Des Moines...an ice storm warning
continues for the Kansas City area...Missouri also dealing with flooding
with 4.80 inches of rain at Neosho in the last 24 hours and 3.64 inches in
Springfield...I thought it was funny when I saw that 95 below zero with
winds 113 mph at Vostok in Antarctica yesterday. We knew right away that was
an error because they are in the middle of summer.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure am glad football season is over.
I probably won't watch another game until next September. Tonight I start a
new effort to get in bed at a decent hour and get little Miss Molly back on
schedule. She stayed up with me until well past midnight last night and she
slept until almost 10:00 this morning. I need to start dragging her out of
bed when I get up at 5:00 to get back on our most enjoyable early, early
walks...last night had an after midnight vigorous play session with her. She
never gets tired of those. When I went to bed, she scratched out a place and
immediately collapsed and went to sleep only to be awakened and moved to
another bed a few minutes later. She moaned and groaned the whole way. Not
really fair to her, but life goes on. I still like that old saying, "there
is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face.

After one more spring-like day today with temperatures in the low to mid
70s, cooler air will invade our state for a brief time beginning tomorrow. A
cold front should pass through during the morning hours, which means the
high temperature tomorrow will probably come sometime between 3:00 and 9:00
a.m. when we will be in the mid 50s. The mercury should drop quickly into
the 40s, and possibly the upper 30s, over the northwest corner of the state
around Muscle Shoals by midday. For Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston, we
expect the mercury to drop down to around 50 degrees and hold there with a
steady north breeze. And, to the south, places like Clanton and Montgomery
should reach the 60s before falling back a bit during the day.

Along with the cooler air, a few passing rain showers are likely tomorrow
and Friday as the front stalls over the central part of the state.. Amounts
should not be all that heavy, with most places getting under one-half inch.

WEEKEND PEEK: Warmer air begins to return, and we expect afternoon
temperatures in the 60s on Saturday and Sunday. A few scattered showers are
still possible, especially on Saturday. There is a fairly good chance we go
back into the low 70s early next week.

BIG TIME STORM: Flagstaff, AZ now has two feet of snow on the ground. While
the snow was falling in Flagstaff, a tornado warning was issued for the
Phoenix area yesterday afternoon.

That storm system will bring heavy snow and ice today to much of the
nation's mid-section. Chicago is under a heavy snow warning, where up to one
foot is possible. Significant ice buildup is likely for Kansas City and
Wichita as freezing rain continues to fall.

APRIL IN JANUARY CONTINUES: The old backyard RC Cola thermometer is
confused. It thinks it's April. In fact, temperatures this afternoon are
more like mid-April than early January. That will come to an end soon, but
not in a dramatic way. Instead, cooler air will ease into this area Thursday
and bring our high temperatures down to the mid and upper 50s, which will
still be several degrees above normal. The front will have to wedge its way
into this area, because winds aloft will not permit a slam-bang entry. So,
the cooler air will be very shallow and you probably won't see any clearing
skies. It looks like the heaviest rain will occur north of Alabama, so we do
not expect any big amounts with this change to cooler. Over a period of
three days, Thursday through Saturday, we may not get more than two-thirds
of an inch. High temperatures have been establishing some records lately.
That doesn't impress me much, because those are individual daily records.
More impressive would be to break the record high for the whole month of 81
in 1949.

THE DREADED "I" WORD: Ice Storm. It strikes fear in almost anyone.
It's not for our area. Instead, major icing is likely to occur tonight and
tomorrow across Eastern Kansas and NW Missouri, including the Kansas City
Metro area. In some places, the ice load will build up to one inch followed
by several inches of snow. In a word, that spells "paralysis." We hate to
see that happen because it can bring suffering for a long time as trees and
power lines come crashing to the ground.

ELSEWHERE: A major winter system is affecting a wide area. Chicago
is expected to get 8 inches of snow. In Des Moines, freezing drizzle will be
followed by 10 inches of snow. Out west, the snow is much heavier. By midday
today, 10 to 17 inches of snow covered the Flagstaff area of Northern
Arizona and they are expecting 15 to 30 inches total. More heavy rain in the
lowlands of Southern California and Arizona. It sounds odd, but one of the
driest places in the world, Death Valley, received nearly an inch of rain in
the last 24 hours. Las Vegas has received 3 inches of rain during the last
week, which is two-thirds of their normal for the entire year...USA
temperature extremes in the last 24 hours: 88 in Laredo to 26 below at
Hallock, Minn.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor little Miss Molly. It's my fault.
I've got her so mixed up with her sleeping arrangements, that I feel sorry
for her. I'm trying to get back into a normal routine of going to bed at
10:30 and getting up at 5:00. However, I find myself going to bed after
midnight most nights. Little Miss Molly slept until after 9:00 this morning,
so we missed our most enjoyable early morning walk. When she did get up, she
whapped that little doorbell loudly and rapidly...last night she was also
pounding that little bell and I missed the only touchdown that Auburn
scored...on a recent walk, Molly got to rub noses with a good friend,
Mattie, who is also a Shih-tzu. Minutes later, Jo-Jo came bounding across
the walking track. He is a very pretty dog that got run over by a car about
a month ago and disappeared for several days. He came back home, crippled,
but walking normally now. Molly loves him. Life goes on.

...Smashing Records...

The normal high temperature in Birmingham for January 4 is 53; we expect to
beat that by a whopping twenty degrees today as the mercury soars back into
the low to mid 70s. We have established new record high temperatures for the
last two days in a row, and will be close to another one today (today's
record high is 75 set in 1950). And, along with the winter warmth we should
see a decent amount of sunshine today and tomorrow with the thicker clouds
holding to the north of us, where some rain is possible over the northwest
corner of the state.

A BRIEF COOLDOWN: A Polar front will ease into north Alabama late tomorrow
night, and a shallow layer of cooler air will settle in for Thursday and
Friday. Temperature forecasts will be very tricky due to the shallow nature
of the cold air; Muscle Shoals could very well hold in the 40s all day
Thursday and Friday, while Clanton and Montgomery will be in the 60s. We
will split the difference in our forecast, and indicate highs in the 50s on
both days. Just keep in mind temperatures will vary greatly over the latter
half of the week. A few showers are likely as the front stalls out over
north-central Alabama.

Spring-like temperatures will return over the weekend as the upper air wind
pattern over North America simply won't let any real cold air get in here
for any long period of time.

GETTING DRY: Today will be the 11th consecutive day without measurable rain
for much of Alabama.

ROAMING: Los Angeles measured 1.57" of rain yesterday. I-5 in central
California was closed for much of the day due to heavy snow. Flagstaff,
Arizona will have over one foot of snow on the ground by midday today. That
same storm will bring lots of snow from Denver to Chicago today and
tomorrow, and winter storm watches cover a large part of the nation's
mid-section.

THERMOMETER RIDING HIGH: By early this afternoon, the temperature had
already climbed above the 70-degree mark across much of the Alabama
landscape and even to the mid 70s in Tuscaloosa and Montgomery. These
temperatures are over 20 degrees too warm for early January. We do see a
cool down ahead, but not a major one. In fact, this cool down will make a
difficult forecast for Thursday and Friday. A cold front in the nation's
midsection will slowly push toward the SE reaching Central Alabama Thursday
morning. There will be some showers in connection with that front and maybe
even a thunderstorm, but it looks like the heaviest amount of moisture will
pass to the north of Alabama. The big question mark is where will the front
stall. Our best guess is south of Montgomery and then heading right back
north as a warm front on Saturday. So, we can still look for showers also on
Saturday. The cooler air is going to be extremely shallow, so don't look for
any clearing. We don't think our temperatures will get below the middle 40s
even on Friday morning. Highs will stay in the upper 50s, which is still
above normal. See our day-by-day forecast.
On Sunday, the warmest temperature in Alabama was 79 in Jackson, 78 in
Montgomery and 76 in Livingston and Tuscaloosa.

THE REFRIGERATOR: It was 29 below zero in Hallock, Minnesota this morning
for the national low. It was 28 below in Wolf Point and 25 below in Havre
and Jordan. All three of those towns are in Montana. The coldest in Alaska
was only 15 below at Northway.

2004 RAINFALL WRAP UP: Mobile had an extremely wet year with 76.16 inches
of rain. Up in the NW corner of Alabama, it was almost as wet with 71.50
inches at Muscle Shoals. Montgomery had only 52.10 and Huntsville 59.35.
Birmingham had 61.25-about 7 inches wetter than normal and it was the second
year in a row that we received more than 60 inches.

ROAMING: More heavy rain in the west in the coastal areas and more very
heavy snow in the mountains. Los Angeles received an additional 1.58 inches
in the last 24 hours...in Northern Utah, Alta in the Wasatch Mountains
reports 86 inches of snow on the ground. (ski area)

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I suppose this is an omen of what the new year
will bring, because the very first thing I did after the new year rang in at
midnight was to go for a walk with little Miss Molly. Because of fireworks
going off in a nearby neighborhood, she stayed hid much of the evening. She
doesn't like sudden noises. We tried to hold her and comfort her, but she
wouldn't let us. She would slither away into one of her three hiding places
in the house and hunker down. At 12:22 a.m., after the midnight fireworks
had quieted down, she rang that little bell on the back door with such vigor
and so often that I thought it was the ice cream coming down the street at
midnight, no less. She needed to go that bad but was afraid to earlier. So
we took a nice walk to welcome the new year. Life goes on and I have an idea
that I will walk over 300 miles with her again this year. I will cherish
every single mile.
