MORE MILD WEATHER: January so far has been exceptionally mild across
Alabama. We had a brief cool down yesterday and last night, but that's over.
This afternoon a low pressure area was moving NE from the Texas coast. It
will track NE across West Tennessee tonight and into West Virginia by
tomorrow. For Alabama, it will pull a warm front northward and send our
temperatures back to the 70-degree mark by Sunday. Meanwhile, rain will
spread across the area late today and tonight. It should become rather
extensive overnight and end early Saturday morning. The heaviest rain will
be over the extreme NW where a few places could get around 1 inch or so.

Across Central Alabama, the total will be more like 2/3 to 3/4 of an inch.
Sunday weather looks ideal with mostly sunshine and about 70 degrees. A
little warmer on Monday. Next chance of rain will be the middle of next
week, mainly on Thursday.

WHEN WE WILL WE GO BACK TO THE RIGHT TEMPERATURE? Looks like a substantial
change to colder toward the end of next week-about Friday. We will likely
get some showers and storms ahead of that on Thursday. Models have been
rather persistent with that, as if they are trying to persuade us weather
humans.

PLACES THAT MAKE YOU SHIVER: 17 below this morning in Hibbing,
Minnesota...9 below with drifting snow in the polar bear capitol of the
world (Churchill, Manitoba)...100 inches of snow now on the ground at Alta,
Utah (ski area)...Flagstaff, Arizona still covered with 23 inches and
temperatures as low as 13 below in the area this morning...56 inches of new
snow at Lodgepole, California in the Sierra-Nevada range...52 below zero at
Summit, Greenland. That scientific research station is located atop the
Greenland icecap. If you wanted to go there now, you would have to land on a
15,000-foot snow runway with a ski equipped aircraft.

THE WEST: They are getting pounded again and snow in the mountains will
again be measured by feet instead of inches. Heavenly Ski Resort, in the
Sierra-Nevada range, got 110 inches from the last storm...more flash
flooding also for the lower elevations in California, Nevada and Arizona.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Partial success this morning in getting my
little princess, Little Miss Molly, back on schedule. We all went to bed at
11. I got up at 4:30 and little Miss Molly slept until 8. On our morning
walk, the old crows were back. It makes our day when we can see a lot of
birds. Molly has developed a new habit of wanting to chase the birds. This
means a 30% increase (bit of weather lingo there) in my chance of getting
whiplash...Molly probed into the thick hedgerow along the walking track
trying to see her friend Jo-Jo. She got her tail caught in a long brier and
couldn't get loose. She tugged and tugged and looked over her shoulder with
a real puzzled look. Then she looked up at me as if to say, "Well, big guy,
can't you help me?" She is so funny. Each time I look at her, I laugh, which
is good. The whole world needs to laugh a lot more. Life goes on and each
day is better than the day before.
