=========================================================

....Severe Weather; Followed By Cooler...

Little change in our thinking about the potential for severe weather
across Alabama this afternoon. A warm front extends across northern
Mississippi into Northwest Alabama. The warm front is the focus for
thunderstorms over the Northwest corner of the state this morning.
But these storms are elevated, meaning that their bases are a few
thousand feet in the air, not near the surface. This means they can't
get terribly strong, although they can put up quite a fuss with heavy
rain, gusty winds, lots of lightning and very loud, booming thunder.

MAIN EVENTSETTING THE STAGE: Low pressure is over southern Arkansas
this morning moving northeastward. The low seems to be taking more of
a northerly track than earlier thought. As it lifts through
Mississippi and intensifies, we will continue to see lots of warm,
most air from along the Gulf Coast lifted northward. The more
northerly track could mean that the really rich dew points (60F-65F)
and greater severe weather threat will encompass more of the state.
The Storm Prediction Center has the southern half of the state,
roughly south of a line that bisects Clanton in a Moderate Risk for
severe weather. And that could be expanded northward based on later
date. The rest of the state is still in a Slight Risk area for now.
Remember that Moderate Risks are still rare and a Public Severe
Weather Outlook has been issued highlighting the threat for
significant severe weather.

THE MAIN EVENT: We will watch the action unfold this morning as all
of the troops move into place: the low to the west, the warm front,
and a strong cold front waiting in the wings to the west.
Thunderstorms will be continuing along the warm front, which will
likely set up over North Central Alabama. South of that, the rich
moisture will probably make it as far north as I-20 by early
afternoon. Within this richer moisture, the airmass will become
unstable. Wind shear will be sufficient for thunderstorms to become
organized. Those storms that do develop will have the potential to
produce significant severe weather, including the possibility of
tornadoes. Again, we think the best chance of that is over the
southern half of the state, mainly south of Clanton. Then, a line of
thunderstorms will push eastward across the state during the
afternoon. These storms will have the potential to become severe,
with embedded supercells and bow echoes producing wind damage and even
the chance of a tornado. It will be windy both ahead of and behind
the cold front, which will arrive tonight. A Lake Wind Advisory is
in effect for winds that will average 10-20 mph or higher.

COOLER: Expect a change to cooler behind the front, with temperatures
tomorrow hanging in the 50os along with a blustery northwest wind.
The mercury will dip precipitously close to the freezing
mark tomorrow night, with some of the normally colder locations
threatening to get near 32F. Monday and Tuesday look decent, with
highs in the 60s and 70s respectively. Our next weathermaker will
begin to affect the area by late on Tuesday as low pressure to our
west moves to our south, with rain showers expected late Tuesday night
into Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1912: At 11:40 p.m., Fredrick Fleet, the lookout in
the crow's nest of the supposedly unsinkable RMS Titanic rang the
bridge with an urgent warning. The ship was headed directly toward a
moderately sized iceberg. The watch on the bridge ordered the engines
stopped and ordered a hard turn to starboard. But it was not quick
enough. The iceberg tore a series of gashes in the hull of the ship.
Twenty lifeboats were launched, but over 1500 passengers and crews
were in the icy water when the ship began to sink at 2:20 a.m. Only
705 of the 2200 passengers and crew aboard the liner were saved,
making it the world's greatest maritime disaster.

...Severe Weather Possible Today...

Alabama will be under the gun from a strong Spring storm system today.
A warm front will be setting up across North Central Alabama this
morning. Low pressure will begin developing along the front and
intensifying as it moves eastward. Instability and wind shear values
will be sufficient for supercell storms to form this morning across
the areas near and south of the front. Then a cold front will enter
western sections of the state early this afternoon. A line of severe
thunderstorms will push eastward ahead of the front. These storms
will be severe also, with the threat of damaging winds and isolated
tornadoes. Rain will end from west to east tonight.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow will be a blustery day with a strong northerly wind.
Afternoon highs will struggle to reach to 60 degree mark. Skies
should clear late in the day, and the mercury will drop like a rock
Sunday night, reaching the middle 30s on average. A few normally
colder locations may approach freezing by Monday morning.

WEEK AHEAD: Temperatures rebound a bit on Monday, with highs back
into the upper 60s. Tuesday looks like a pleasant day, with readings
starting off near 40 and rising into the lower 70s. The storm track
takes on a southern bent in the week ahead, with low pressure
developing to the west of us and then diving toward the Gulf Coast.
We may see some showers late on Tuesday into Wednesday, but the best
rain chances may be over South Alabama.

DALLAS WAKE UP CALL: The City of Dallas may have dodged a bullet last
evening as a severe thunderstorm moved across the Metroplex. The
storm was extremely intense in Tarrant County, where Fort Worth is
located. It became very intense just north of downtown Fort Worth,
producing lots of large hail, including baseball sized hail at the NWS
Fort Worth. It produced a tornado in the Haltom City community. The
main part of the storm headed directly for downtown Dallas. The large
supercell storm cycled down in intensity as it passed over the city,
but began to ramp up again after it passed through Highland Park. No
significant damage was report in the Metroplex. Other reports of
funnel clouds and tornadoes were received from areas east of the
Metroplex.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Issac Cline of Galveston 1900 fame was the
chief weatherman at New Orleans as the Great Mississippi River Flood
of 1927 was raging across the Midwest and South. He was issuing
forecasts of river crests on the Big Muddy that were being ignored by
New Orleans newspapers, who didn't want to publicize the potential
economic calamity that their port city was facing. On this date,
Cline called the newspapermen into his office and charged them with
jeopardizing the city's safety.

ON THIS DATE IN 1927: Hailstones weighing up to 2.2 pounds killed 92
people in the Gopalganj area of Bangladesh. The hail was reportedly
the size of pumpkins. This is the world's worst modern hailstorm.
Thousands of livestock were killed.

========================================================

HEADS UP FOR A STORMY SATURDAY: Big changes again in Alabama
weather and this time a significant storm system will probably be
more generous for some much needed rain. The bad news is Saturday is
a stormy day and most people do not like that. The good news is a
good chance of some beneficial amounts of rain. The worst news of all
is the threat of severe weather.

All of Alabama has been placed under a risk of severe weather for
Saturday. This includes an enhanced moderate risk area over about the
south half of the state. The rest is under a slight risk. Remember,
we were under a slight risk Wednesday, so the word slight should not
be taken lightly.

This will be a major storm system coming our way. This afternoon the
low pressure area was really getting its act together over the SW
USA. It was centered over West Texas. The low will continue moving
toward the east. It will cross North Alabama later Saturday, then
into the Carolinas and then up the east coast. This is going to be a
huge event for the NE (see World of Weather below).

Back to Alabama, here is the timeline we believe for Alabama getting
rough weather. A warm front will be moving northward, so some showers
and storms may be in progress Saturday morning. Later in the day, a
line of showers and storms should move SE through the state. These
storms will have locally heavy rain and some will be strong to
severe. All the ingredients are not in place for a major severe
weather event over the northern counties, but there are better
ingredients down south. Check the weather closely early Saturday,
because there is always a chance that the risk could be upgraded for
North Alabama, although that does not appear likely now.

Rain is still much needed across the state. This storm should bring
some generous amounts to most areas. Here in Central Alabama, 1 to 2
inches may not be uncommon. We are using a projected rainfall of 1.50
inches as an average. There will be a little light rain left over
Sunday morning as it turns blustery and colder. Temperatures should
stay in the 50s all day Sunday. By Monday morning, we will have lows
in the mid 30s with clear skies and light wind. Translation: possible
scattered light frost.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: There are some indications that when this
powerful low pressure area moves up the east coast, that it will
bring one of the worst nor'easters to New England in a number of
years. Straight-line winds may be strong enough to cause some
property damage. Cold temperatures this morning included 34 at Black
Creek NE of Gadsden with light frost. That makes 79 mornings with
frost and 85 freezes this winter season. It was 5 above zero in
Yellowstone National Park, 17 below in Deadhorse, Alaska and 96 below
at Vostok, Antarctica. It is expected to drop as low as 99 below
there next week.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Woe is Little Miss Molly. She will see
little of me Saturday and Saturday night due to weather duties.
Undoubtedly she will play several ballgames by herself. She
absolutely demands 1/2 –mile walks at least twice a day. Did not get
to go with her the second time until almost 10:00 last night. She
still insisted to go the distance. No more spankings and I promise I
will not ever spank her again. I sure do hope that Little Miss Molly
will be with me at least another 10 to 12 years. She will probably
subtract that much aging from me. Life goes on.....

attention will be focused on developments to the west. A strong spring
storm system will come roaring out of the Rockies, and will bring the
risk of a significant tornado outbreak to parts of Texas, Arkansas,
and Louisiana later today and tonight. The highest risk of severe
weather this afternoon and tonight will be in the broad zone near I-20
from Fort Worth, Texas to Vicksburg, Mississippi.

STORMY SATURDAY: The showers and storms will move into Alabama
tomorrow. An advancing warm front should bring showers to the area
tomorrow morning, and then the stronger storms will likely arrive
during the midday and afternoon hours as the dynamics improve and the
air becomes more unstable. Thunderstorms tomorrow will have the
potential to produce large hail and damaging wind, and we can't rule
out the chance of a few isolated tornadoes with the stronger storms
due to a considerable amount of veering of the wind with altitude. For
now it looks like the best chance of strong to severe storms will come
tomorrow from about 11:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The storms will move out of the state Saturday evening, and much
cooler air will follow the rain. Sunday looks like a blustery day with
a strong north wind, and clouds lingering much of the day, especially
along and east of I-65. We are projecting highs only in the low 50s on
Sunday, and some parts of Northeast Alabama might not make it out of
the 40s.

FROST EARLY MONDAY? The winds will die down Sunday night, and with a
clear sky we will have the potential for some scattered frost across
the northern half of the state early Monday morning. Some of the
colder valley locations will probably experience a light freeze,
although in our forecast package we are using 34 as the projected low
early Monday. Then, we will warm up nicely during the day Monday with
ample sunshine, reaching the upper 60s by mid-afternoon.

STORM SURVEYS: Teams from the National Weather Service in Birmingham
were able to confirm six tornadoes in Alabama that touched down
Wednesday; one was in far Northwest Jefferson County in the community
of Bagley, where windows were blown out of cars and homes. One 18
wheeler was overturned, and the tornado stayed on the ground for
one-half mile. The tornado was rated EF1 on the new enhanced Fujita
scale. Five other EF1 tornadoes touched down Wednesday afternoon, one
near Dadeville in Tallapoosa County, one in Bibb County near Randolph,
one in Macon County near Tuskegee, one near Wetumpka in Elmore County,
and another one that moved through Macon and Russell Counties. There
were no known injuries in any of the tornadoes.

MORE SPRING SNOW: Winter storm warnings are up today for the southern
Rocky Mountains; up to one foot is expected across the southern part
of Colorado.
