==================================================================

GOOD AFTERNOON: The radar is lighting up like a Christmas tree early this
afternoon over much of Alabama. Showers and storms began developing during
the late morning hours. With high amounts of moisture available, the
showers have been very efficient rain producers. As they grow in coverage
and intensity through the afternoon hours, heavy rainfall amounts may lead
to flash flooding in some locations. The showers are forming ahead of a
trough of low pressure to the west of Alabama. The precipitation will begin
to diminish this evening, although overnight showers are a possibility.

TOMRROW AND BEYOND: The trough should continue to influence our weather
tomorrow, with more showers and storms developing The trough should begin
to weaken as we head into Monday and next week, as high pressure builds into
Alabama from the east. Increasing high pressure means more sunshine and
fewer showers an storms. Temperatures will be on the increase also. The
upcoming week should feature partly cloudy skies, hot temperatures and
typical afternoon and evening s showers and storms scattered about the area.

TRACKING EMILY: Emily continues to intensify this afternoon. The storm is
located about 120 miles south of Kingston, Jamaica at early afternoon. Air
Force Reconnaissance found shortly after 10 a.m. that the central pressure
had dropped to 941 millibars. The same mission also found a flight level
wind of 148 knots (170 mph.) Winds are higher flight level, so the general
rule of thumb is to take 85% or that value to figure the surface winds.

Thus, the 145 mph maximum sustained winds reported in the late morning
advisory. This makes Emily an extremely dangerous category four hurricane.
Emily will continue skirting south of Jamaica this afternoon, keeping the
brunt of the hurricane force winds well offshore. Hurricane warnings are
also in effect for the Cayman Islands, but again, the eyewall of the
hurricane should remain to the south. Emily will then head toward a
rendezvous with the Yucatan Peninsula, where hurricane watches are in
effect. Emily should arrive there early on Monday and then move into the
SW Gulf and threaten Northeast Mexico and southern Texas.

RECORD BIN: Alaskan warmth...82 in Galena AK yesterday to tie the record
for the date... Hawaiian warmth... 86 at Lihue yesterday also tied their
record for the date... The 2.03 inches of rain at Memphis on Friday was a
record for the date... The 99F reading at Helena, MT tied their record for
any July 15th... Yesterday, the morning low at Clifton, AZ fell to only
85F, a new record.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: A dramatic and mysterious cooling of waters in the
northeast Gulf of Mexico was killing fish and chilling bathers along the
beaches of the Florida Panhandle. Coastal water temperatures from near the
Alabama line to as far east as Panama City plunged suddenly from the upper
80s to the low70s, the kind of surf temperatures that could be expected off
of Cape Cod in mid-July. The clear, cold water killed all fish life with
its extraordinarily low levels of dissolved oxygen. The cold water welled
up from the DeSoto Canyon about 30 miles or so off of the Panhandle.

...More Showers and Storms Today...

GOOD MORNING! One week ago, residents along the Gulf Coast were preparing
for Hurricane Dennis. Earlier this week, I thought that we might be getting
ready for another one, but a ridge of subtropical high pressure will serve
as a protective shield for the northern Gulf Coast against Hurricane Emily
(more shortly.)

THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: Moisture levels remain high across Alabama on
this Saturday. That subtropical ridge is going to expand into the state as
we head through time, and the remnants of Dennis are going to have less and
less of an effect. This spells less in the way of showers and storms,
starting perhaps as early as tomorrow, but not for today. Showers and
storms will remain rather numerous across the area today. The storms could
produce very heavy rainfall amounts again and lead to flooding.

We should see partial sun today, with increasing amounts tomorrow and into
next week. With more sun and fewer showers, we will see warmer
temperatures. Readings will be near normal for summertime in Alabama, with
highs in the lower 90s. Lows will be a tad warmer than normal with all the
humidity, bottoming out in the lower to middle 70s.

EMILY: Residents of Jamaica have been preparing for the arrival of
dangerous Hurricane Emily. Fortunately for the island nation, the storm
weakened substantially on Friday. But the storm is still a formidable
Category Three hurricane this morning as it churns westward through the
Caribbean. It will pass near or just south of the island this afternoon.

Its eventual track carries it over the Yucatan Peninsula and back into the
southwestern Gulf on Sunday. Then it will threaten the coast of extreme
Southeast Texas or northeastern Mexico Tuesday night, even though some of
the models try to take it as far north as Corpus Christi.

ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: Another tropical wave is less than one thousand
miles east of the Windward Islands. It has some potential for development.
Our F storm will be Franklin.

BIG RAIN PRODUCERS: For the second day in a row, thunderstorms have
developed over various parts of Alabama and they are producing locally heavy
amounts of rain. Early this afternoon, Flash Flood Warnings were already
being posted for some SE Alabama counties. Actually, from Birmingham north,
the showers and storms have been less numerous so far today than yesterday,
but that will change with time.

A deep layer of very moist air remains and with afternoon heating the
inevitable occurs-more showers and thunderstorms.

There was significant flash flooding over North-Central Alabama yesterday
afternoon and evening, especially in places like Cullman, Walker, St. Clair
and Jefferson Counties. Probably the worst flooding was over the NE part of
Jefferson County, especially around Trussville and in Western St. Clair
County around Moody. Cullman County even had a bridge washed out.

After we get through with tonight's thunderstorms, the number will gradually
thin out. While we will have another good chance Saturday, they should be a
little less numerous than today. We think they will thin out even more
Monday.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: A good chance of showers and storms on Saturday, but
they will gradually decrease in number early in the week to about a 1 in 3
chance by Tuesday. If you have a coastal vacation planned next week, we
don't believe Hurricane Emily will be a factor.

HURRICANE EMILY: She was 395 miles SE of Kingston, Jamaica this afternoon.
That country is going to have a close call Saturday. Emily has weakened a
bit, but she will regain strength as she heads straight NW through the
Caribbean and finally crosses the extreme north tip of the Yucatan Peninsula
Sunday night. After that it's not quite as certain, but the favored landfall
is near the mouth of the Rio Grande River on the USA-Mexico border Tuesday
night.

CLEANING OFF MY DESK: USA extremes included 125 in Death Valley Thursday
and 36 this morning in Stanley, Idaho...in Phoenix, it should be 111
tomorrow and 113 Sunday. Salt Lake City was expecting 102 today and
Saturday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly spent yesterday morning at
the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop). When she strutted in yesterday afternoon, she
smelled so good. Her face looks so tiny with the hair cut back. She looks
like a tiny doll. But, she also doesn't look like a dog. She looks like a
9-pound rodent. Molly is solid black except for a white streak under her
neck and chest. Sometimes when we get ready to go to bed, we temporarily
lose her when she is curled up in my dark-colored recliner, she literally
becomes invisible across the room. She had a fretful afternoon. As soon as
we got home from the PBS, I cranked up the vacuum cleaner. She immediately
headed for one of her three storm safe places where she hides when it's
thundering and when the vacuum cleaner is running. No sooner had I finished
with the vacuum cleaner, window shaking thunder started. I got so busy I had
no chance to play with her. When I got ready to go to bed late last night,
she had pulled her little bed that stays on the floor (that was loaded with
toys) across the living area to where I would have to step over it coming
out of my office. It was a clear signal of her wishes. Life goes on.

...More Tropical Downpours...

BIG TIME DOWNPOURS: Quite an array of tropical downpours across Alabama
yesterday. A whopping 5.83" of rain fell at Trussville in a very short
period of time resulting in significant flash flooding. Flooding was also a
major problem n Moody, Huffman, Roebuck, and Center Point. A severe storm
over Walker county prompted a tornado warning for a brief time and was
responsible for more flooding. Our online weather watcher in Jasper measured
3.28". In Cullman county, a bridge was washed out southwest of Jones Chapel
and Alabama 69 was underwater for a while near Bug Tussle. Other rain
reports included 4.17" from one of our weather watchers in Trussville, 2.88"
at Huffman, 2.80" at J.B. Elliott's place in the northeast part of
Trussville, and 1.83" at Center Point. We only measured .14" at Riverchase.

TODAY: Very moist tropical air remains in place, and scattered to numerous
showers and storms are likely with more very heavy downpours possible.

THE WEEKEND: Showers and storms will gradually thin out, and by Sunday and
Monday they should be very widely spaced as afternoon temperatures move into
the low 90s.

AT THE BEACH: A good chance of a few showers or storms along the central
Gulf coast today, but for the weekend increasing amounts of sunshine and
fewer showers. Temperatures will rise into the 87 to 90 degree range.

EMILY: Hurricane Emily will move through the Caribbean over the next few
days, and seems to be headed in the general direction of the Mexican Gulf
coast for a landfall late Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. She could be a
very strong hurricane at the time of landfall.

FLOODED ROADS. FIND ALTERNATE ROUTES. IT ONLY TAKES A FEW INCHES OF
SWIFTLY FLOWING WATER TO CARRY VEHICLES AWAY.

THE WEEDS KEEP GROWING: No reason for them not to-they have been getting
all the rain they can drink and there's not much chance of us getting a good
break any time soon.

Bill Murray reports 6.91 inches of rain in just the last 10 days at his
place in South Trussville. At Birmingham Airport, measurable rain has fallen
on 10 of the first 13 days of July. That's almost 80% chance.

We still have plenty of moisture in place and we will have a good chance of
showers and thunderstorms into the early weekend. We believe they will thin
out on Sunday and Monday, but even then we will still have scattered, mostly
afternoon, storms. It appears that there will be an upsurge in showers and
storms tomorrow. These storms feature a lot of lightning and quick heavy
downpours. Don't be surprised to see some communities get well over an inch
of rain Friday while others are left high and dry. With fewer storms, high
temperatures will edge upward into the lower 90s Sunday and Monday.

HURRICANE EMILY: She was located in the eastern edge of the Caribbean this
afternoon and she was growing stronger. It appears that Emily will become a
major hurricane as she progresses toward the NW all the way through the
Caribbean and possibly making landfall on the north edge of the Yucatan
Peninsula late Sunday night. By Tuesday morning she is expected to be over
the SW Gulf of Mexico. We don't know where the eventual landfall will be.
The favored place is on the east coast of Mexico, but it could be extreme
South Texas. We think that Emily will not affect the Mississippi-Alabama-NW
Florida coast. So if you have lingered over finalizing your vacation plans,
why not go ahead.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Wally Coker, 33/40 Weather Watcher for Center Point,
got 1.50 inches of rain late yesterday bringing his July total to
7.12...Oxford now has 6.11 inches for July...way up in Billings, Montana,
our friend Todd Fosey sends an interesting note. It was 106 in Billings
yesterday-only 2 degrees short of their all-time high of 108...skipping
around the world for some spot reports it was 116 degrees with a humidity of
6% in Salah, Algeria while Esquel, Argentina had a cold 23. (It's mid winter
there!)...USA extremes: 123 in Death Valley Wednesday...34 this morning at
Meacham, Oregon and Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It's quiet as a graveyard at midnight in our
house today. The eerie quietness is because little Miss Molly is away at the
PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) getting a haircut. She is going to look so funny
when she gets home. We asked for a summer cut, which means she will have a
velvet-like coat. With more hair cut back from her face, her eyes will seem
twice as big and that spells trouble for me. She can make me do anything
with those eyes. When she gets home, she will have a neat little bow around
her neck and she will smell so good. You bet she will get lots of attention
tonight...all six times I have gone to the kitchen to get coffee today,
there were no little paws raking down the back of my leg. Miss Molly always
did that to alert me that it was ballgame time. You can bet I miss her. I'm
afraid I'm way too attached. Life goes on.
