GOOD AFTERNOON: It’s another hot, hazy and rather humid Saturday afternoon
out there across Alabama. Any showers and storms that form over North and
Central Alabama will be isolated today. The next few days will feature more
in the way of showers and storms as moisture levels increase.

AIR QUALITY ALERT: Jefferson and Shelby Counties will continue under an
Orange Level Air Quality Alert today. An inversion will continue to trap
pollutants in the lowest levels of the atmosphere today, giving us the
persistent haze with visibilities reduced to around 5 miles. An Orange
Level means that the air outside can be unhealthy for vulnerable individuals
to breathe, including the very young, the elderly and people with breathing
problems. Prolonged exposure and outdoor exertion should be avoided. The
Air Quality Index is forecast to drop back into the yellow category on
Sunday.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: A tropical wave moving north off the Florida East
Coast has been spreading showers and thunderstorms across southern Georgia
all morning. This area was weakening as it headed toward South Alabama. We
will introduce a chance of showers tonight, mainly south of Birmingham,
however. Moisture levels will continue to increase through Sunday, and
showers and storms will be fairly numerous tomorrow across the area.
Coverage will be about 40-50 percent. There will still be a few showers
around Sunday night

TOPIC: TROPICS: There are signs that a low pressure system is forming in
the area of disturbed weather associated with the tropical wave southeast of
the Carolina coast. Air Force Reconnaissance was scheduled to depart
Keesler AFB at 12 noon CDT. If they find a low pressure system that is warm
core, or warmer at the center, it will be classified as a tropical
depression. If it is a hybrid between warm core (tropical) and cold core,
it will be classified as a subtropical depression. It should move into the
Carolinas tonight before it gets a name. It would be Bret if it did.

WEEK AHEAD: Alabama will continue in a warm and moist weather pattern for
much of the coming week with daily doses of showers and storms. The
majority of tem will come during the afternoon and evening hours, but with
the plentiful moisture and disturbances rotating around the subtropical
high, a shower or storm is possible at any time.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Until this date, Erie, Pennsylvania, was one of the
few non-mountainous spots in the Lower 48 that had never reached 100°. The
high of 100°, after a morning low of 64°, broke Erie's previous all-time
record of 99° (9/3/53). Erie's records date back to 1873. Cleveland
established their all-time record high with a reading of 104 degrees.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: At noon, the tropical depression in the southwest
Gulf of Mexico was upgraded to a hurricane and christened Audrey. Air Force
reconnaissance investigating Hurricane Audrey over the southwest Gulf of
Mexico found a central pressure of 973 mb. Audrey would eventually achieve
Category 4 status before devastating the Cameron LA area on the 27th. I
will continue to share

...Air Quality Alert...

GOOD MORNING! We have a Code Orange Air Quality Alert today here in
Jefferson and Shelby Counties. The AQI for today will be above 100, meaning
the air is unhealthy for sensitive groups, including those with lung
ailments, the very young and the elderly. These groups should limit
prolonged exposure outside and avoid outdoor exertion. The Air Quality
Index is forecast to be in the yellow category on Sunday.

OUR FORECAST: Once again, high pressure will dominate our weather today with
a good bit of sunshine and developing cumulus clouds. Temperatures will
rise to near 90, and the chance of any isolated shower or storm developing
in your area is very small. A developing trough across the area will
maintain a small chance of a shower or a storm overnight tonight. Skies
will be partially sunny on Sunday, with an enhanced chance of showers and
storms, thanks to the trough. We will maintain a small chance of an
overnight shower or storm Sunday night. Then typical summertime conditions
will prevail for much of next week, with scattered showers and storms each
day.

TROPICS: An Air Force Reconnaissance flight is scheduled to investigate the
disturbance east of the Bahamas this morning. The system may become more
organized later today and a tropical depression could form.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: Lightning struck four rock climbers on Cathedral Peak
in Yosemite National Park. Fortunately, the victims all survived, but many
climbers are not so lucky. Climbers should carefully check weather
forecasts. It is generally safer to climb in the morning hours, because
most thunderstorms occur after noon.

MORE HURRICANE AUDREY: I have a copy of selected advisories on Hurricane
Audrey that were issued by the U.S. Weather Bureau in June 1957. I am
amazed at how far we have come in our warning process in the past 50 years.
All weekend, I will share selected advisories with you in te Weather Talk
blog.

...Air Quality Alert...

GOOD MORNING! The Alabama Department of Environmental Management has
issued an Air Quality Alert for today. The Air Quality Index is
expected to be 105, which is above the threshold for an Orange, or
Unhealthy Level. This means that air will be unhealthy for sensitive
groups, including those with heart or lung diseases, young people and
older adults. These people should refrain from prolonged or heavy
outdoor exertion. Some air quality alert action steps:

Car pool or take public transportation
Combine errands
Walk or ride your bike
Avoid drive thru lines
Don't use gas powered lawn equipment

OUR FORECAST: High pressure is in control of Alabama's weather this
morning. It will give us another hot, hazy and humid day.
Visibilities on Wednesday were reduced to 5 miles at times in haze. A
strong temperature inversion will continue to trap pollutants near the
surface again today. Temperatures today will top out in the lower 90s
in most locations. A couple of isolated showers developed Thursday
afternoon, and we can't rule that out today either, but the chances of
rain at any one location are very small.

Some subtle changes will give us a little hope as we head into the
weekend. Our high pressure ridge will slide just enough east to give
us more southeasterly winds. Moisture levels will gradually increase,
and Friday and Saturday's isolated storms will increase a bit in
coverage as we head into Sunday and the new week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1957: On the basis of meteorological data and a radio
report from a shrimp boat, the Weather Bureau in New Orleans issued
the first advisory on a tropical depression in the Bay of Campeche at
10:30 PM. The depression was located 300 miles south of Brownsville
TX. The storm would become
Hurricane Audrey.

THE OLE HHH WEATHER: That's the nickname we have assigned to what we
so often get this time of year. HHH, of course, stands for Hot, Humid
and Hazy. This often can create air quality problems. That's why
Jefferson and Shelby Counties were under a Code Orange Ozone Alert
today.

It's rather stagnant right now. We see very little chance of any rain
through Sunday. Some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms will
show up Monday. By this weekend, a low pressure system will form over
the east Gulf of Mexico. That, plus the overall circulation aloft,
will bring in enough moisture to start giving us some showers by early
in the week.

Unfortunately, there will be little heat relief all the way into early
next week with most highs in Central Alabama between 90 and 94. Nights
are still relatively comfortable. Last night it dropped to 59 in
DeSoto State Park and 60 in Ashland and Hamilton. It will not be that
pleasant tonight.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Clouds and showers continue over the Central
Caribbean because of a tropical wave. There are no signs of
circulation. Upper level winds do not want to cooperate for tropical
development. The system will still produce heavy rain over Haiti, the
Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Eastern Cuba as it moves WNW. Clouds
and showers continue from South Florida NE for several hundred miles.
Still nothing favorable for tropical development.

LIGHTNING AWARENESS WEEK: We haven't spent enough time on that
subject this week. Lightning is my most feared weather element and I
will be doing a series of stories on lightning through July and
August. I can't overemphasize the necessity of going inside as soon as
you hear thunder. There was an extreme case in Colorado a few years
ago where lightning killed a cyclist 25 miles from the center of the
thunderstorm.

EXTRA THURSDAY THOUGHTS: I fear a horrible fire season in Southern
California because of all the rain they had earlier. That causes a
lush growth of underbrush which dries out and becomes fuel when it
turns dry...Orlando, another 1.76 inches of rain yesterday bringing
the June total to over 13 inches. 3.93 inches fell at Chekica
Everglades...33 in Berlin, New Hampshire was the USA low this morning.
It was 119 in Death Valley Wednesday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: By nature, I am a good-natured guy and I
laugh a lot...even semi-silly at times and maybe 20% wacky. But, I
have never laughed as much as I did yesterday afternoon at M& M.
That's the nickname I have assigned to little Miss Molly and her
friend Megan, who arrived from Utah yesterday for a week's visit. We
were sitting outside with Molly when they drove up. You should have
seen Molly's face when another Shih-tsu hopped out of the car. They
even started a play session in the driveway and when they got inside
they played with reckless abandon for hours, including chasing each
other in circles, diving off the couch onto each other, standing on
their hind legs like they were boxing and wrestling. They became
inseparable friends in less than 5 minutes. They got so tired they
would stop 3 minutes and lie on the cool tile to get their breath only
to jump up and go at it again. Molly is going to be very sad when
Megan goes back to the Salt Lake area a week from now but life goes
on. I will fill the void and play with her even more until my little
tongue hangs out also!

...Warm Up Continues...

GOOD MORNING! Well, the advertised nineties that we have been pushing
for the past few days should arrive in most locations today as high
pressure continues to build over the state. It looks like those
nineties will be a fixture over much of Alabama for the next three
days. Welcome to summer!

OUR FORECAST: Not much has changed in the forecast department. A
weak backdoor cold front was pushing stealthily through the state this
morning. This front will not be accompanied by anything in the way of
weather, except to provide a reinforcing shot of relatively dry air.
This should keep our skies partly cloudy through Saturday, with
nothing to speak of in the way of precipitation. In fact, indications
are that the next chance of rain will hold off until Sunday, when a
weakness develops over the Southeast. Temperatures are going to be
warm, in the 90s through Saturday and near 90 Sunday and Monday.

TROPICS: Satellite photos have indicated an increased level of
organization during the day in the tropical wave over the Central
Caribbean. This system should encounter unfavorable upper level winds
over the next couple of days as it tracks to the west northwest over
Hispaniola and Cuba.

RECORD DRY STREAK: No rain fell in Fresno on Wednesday, marking the
119th consecutive dry day in the California city. You want a lead
pipe cinch weather forecast? How about no rain on June 21st in
Fresno? It has never rained on June 21st in the city, with daily
weather records dating back to August 1887. Those records began under
the Signal Corps, the U.S. Weather Bureau and the National Weather
Service.

ON THIS DATE IN 1972: Massive flooding was underway in parts of
Pennsylvania, the result of a three day deluge caused by the remnants
of Hurricane Agnes. Several mid-Atlantic states were affected, but
Pennsylvania ended up being the hardest hit state with $2.1 billion in
damages and 48 deaths. The damage was so extreme; President Richard
Nixon declared the entire state a disaster area. Agnes is retired
from the Atlantic's list of names.

MOSTLY DRY, BUT HOTTER: It looks like Alabama will be pretty much
storm free for the next several days after some locally strong storms
the last two days.

We have omitted the mention of any showers until late in the weekend.
We think just enough moisture will get back in the area to set off
some widely scattered afternoon thunderstorms on Sunday. If that
forecast is correct, you have a better chance of not getting wet on
Sunday than getting wet.

The upper level low pressure area that parked over Georgia for a day
or two is being replaced by a ridge of high pressure aloft from the
west. In summer, this always spells hot weather. It can also mean that
some thunderstorms forming in the Central Plains can decide to head
for Disney World and pass through Alabama on the way. We don't think
that will happen in the next few days. Our normal high temperature for
late June is about 89. It should be about 3 degrees hotter than that
for the next several days.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There has been an increase in showers and
thunderstorms in the Central Caribbean today due to a tropical wave.
However, upper level winds should become less favorable for
development. Even so, there could be heavy rain and potential flooding
over parts of Hispaniola as it moves slowly west and NW. Something
else that caught our eye. A weak low pressure has developed over the
East Gulf of Mexico along a broad band of showers and thunderstorms.
This is not expected to evolve in tropical development any time soon.

SUPER HAILSTORM: We have mentioned many times that Eastern Colorado
is a prime area for hailstorms in summer, especially near the
foothills of the Rockies all the way from Ft. Collins down through
Denver, Colorado Springs and Pueblo. Did you hear about yesterday's
hailstorm in Colorado Springs when it got so deep that storm sewers
were stopped up resulting in flash flooding? The hail piled up in
drifts almost knee high.

ROAMING ELSEWHERE: 118 in Death Valley was the hottest yesterday...34
at Truckee and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra-Nevada Mountains was the
coldest this morning...not quite as many showers and storms in Florida
yesterday, but Lakeland received over an inch...I doubt if you believe
this weather fact, but it's true. On this date in 1947, 12 inches of
rain fell in only 42 minutes at Holt, Missouri. That's the world
record for intense rainfall.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Much anticipation in our household as we
await the visit of Megan. My wife's sister and brother-in-law from
Layton, Utah will arrive this afternoon with Megan who is Molly's size
and the same breed. When my wife bought Molly while in Utah nearly
three years ago, Megan had already been trained to ring a little bell
when she needed to go. In the two weeks that Molly stayed with Megan
before coming here, she learned to do the same thing. Megan will be
with Molly for a week and we are anxious to see how those two
playmates will exhaust themselves chasing each other...when Molly and
I walked early this morning, the two visiting Yorkies were outside
nearby. Again they came roaring up an embankment to meet Molly and
Molly raced down the bank to meet them. After they got within one foot
of each other, they seemed to suddenly think this might not be a good
idea. As if on signal, they raced away from each other like they had
been shot from a cannon. Molly looked puzzled at me dying laughing.
Just another enjoyable moment in My Tiny World. We are simple-minded
and easy to entertain. Life goes rapidly along—too fast.

Molly looked puzzled at me dying laughing.

...Less Showers; More Heat...

GOOD MORNING: Well, the closed circulation of the upper level low that
we have been tracking for the past couple of days over Georgia and the
Carolinas has opened up. There still is a trough of low pressure
along the East Coast, but the weakening of the low means that
departure of the extra instability that we have been experiencing for
the past couple of days. Less instability means less showers and
storms and more heat. In fact, we will call for rain chances near zero
today and average temperatures near 89. A few locations will see
highs at 90 or a little above. Things will be even warmer tomorrow,
with highs in the lower 90s.

WEAK FRONT AHEAD: High pressure over southern Canada is beginning to
flex its muscles and will move southward over the next 48 ours,
pushing a cold front southward. The front will arrive during the
overnight hours tonight, but it won't be accompanied by much in the
way of weather. The high pressure system will ridge back into the
southeast tomorrow, giving us another fine, but hot day.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The remnants of our upper level circulation
tries to make a comeback Friday and swings around the southern side of
the subtropical ridge that will extend into the Southeast from the
western Atlantic. This will weaken the ridge enough to allow a more
southeasterly flow and an increase in moisture, as well as a
corresponding rise in shower and storm chances. Those rain chances
will be about one in three right on through the weekend and into next
week. Weekend temperatures will be right around normal.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: The largest hailstone ever in U.S. history fell
near Aurora, NE. The giant stone measured 18 3/4 inches in
circumference and seven inches in diameter. Confirmed by the National
Climatic Data Center, the stone surpassed the famed 1970 stone that
fell near Coffeyville, KS. The hail punched twelve inch craters in
lawns and volleyball sized holes in roofs across the area.

WEATHER ACTING LIKE SUMMER: A few thunderstorms got a jump-start on the first official day of summer early this morning. The main storm fooled around the Oxford-Anniston area, not moving much, and dumping locally heavy rain. There was flooding in downtown Anniston and several reports of dime sized hail. On Noble Street, in downtown Anniston, 2.07 inches of rain was measured—mostly in one hour.

Those storms faded away. However, the ingredients are still in place for some more strong thunderstorms this afternoon and into the evening, mainly over East Central Alabama. Some could be strong enough to produce hail. They should fade away later this evening.

As a ridge aloft builds in from the NW, we expect mostly dry weather to take over starting tomorrow and through at least Thursday. There are indications that another low pressure area aloft will form over the SE by this weekend. We have reintroduced scattered showers and thunderstorms to our forecast starting Friday afternoon and into the weekend.

Meanwhile, we will see high temperatures reach and slightly exceed the 90-degree mark at mid-week.

YESTERDAY’S THUNDERSTORMS: The main ones formed yesterday afternoon over South Tennessee and moved south into Alabama. Several North Alabama counties came under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings. Numerous trees were uprooted over NE Cullman County near Joppa. Lightning struck the Baptist Health Center at Snead, in North Blount County causing some structural damages and causing power outages.

ROAMING: South Florida getting way too much rain...yesterday 4.89 inches at Miami Airport, lots of flooding in the area...Miami has now received 15 inches in the first three weeks of June and Orlando 11.32 inches...getting hot, hot, hot in Arizona...highs yesterday 115 at Bouse and Goodyear, 116 in Chandler and a blistering 121 at Peoria in Maricopa County!...cold spot in theLower 48 this morning was 34 at Stanley, Idaho. That small town, in the heart of the Sawtooth Mountains is the USA cold spot many times each year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Interesting story in the Birmingham News this morning about how dogs are scared by thunderstorms and other loud noises...I recommend a read...it explained that humans understand the sudden boom of thunder while doggies do not understand what it is and where the noise is coming from...Little Miss Molly has three “Storm Ready” locations and one of those is variable (meaning where I am at the time) I try to give her extra attention when a thunderstorm is in progress...a very enjoyable fast half-mile walk this morning...we got our usual chewing out by the two ill-tempered mocking birds but we took that in stride. It was so warm and humid that we were both very uncomfortable when we got home. Molly was ready for a treat and a nap. I was ready for more coffee and to plunge into my work. Life goes on, fair weather or storms, coffee or no coffee.

...Hello Summer...

GOOD MORNING! Summer officially arrived at 1:46 a.m. CDT. In the northern
hemisphere, it is the summer solstice. In the southern hemisphere, it is
the winter solstice. Today is the longest day of the year, at least in the
sense that it is the longest time between sunrise and sunset. It also marks
the day that the sun is furthest north in the sky, it is directly overhead
at latitude 23.7 degrees north, which is known as the Tropic of Cancer.
Finally, the equator is at its greatest tilt at the point of the summer and
winter solstices. Interestingly, today is not the warmest day of the year.
The northern hemisphere will be receiving more heat than it is losing for
the next several weeks as the sun is more directly overhead.
Correspondingly, temperatures will continue to rise until we reach our
hottest temperature in late July. Our hottest average temperature is 91,
between July 13th and August 15th. As the sun moves further south, we will
enter a negative heat budget, and temperatures will eventually cool.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY: One of our regional models did a great job predicting
the storms that formed yesterday over the Tennessee Valley and moved south
during the evening. Thinking the WRF will be right again today, showers and
storms will form by early afternoon again over Central Alabama, mainly south
of Birmingham. They should die out quickly after sunset. The storms should
be a little weaker, since the unstable effects of the upper low will be less
today.

REST OF THE WEEK: The upper low to the east of Alabama should slowly weaken
and lift out to the northeast with time. This will allow a ridge of high
pressure to build over Alabama. Temperatures will be on the rise, reaching
90 tomorrow, under partly cloudy skies with a slight chance of afternoon or
evening showers or storms. It should be partly cloudy, mostly dry, and hot
Thursday and Friday, when we will see temperatures in the lower to middle
90s. Moisture levels will increase some over the weekend, bringing back
scattered PM storms.

===================================================================

ALABAMA NOW: Another in a series of pleasantly cool early mornings. We saw
temperatures this morning drop as low as 66 in DeSoto State Park and 59 in
Pinson. A high pressure system to our NE continues to feed us a bit of that
cooler dry air, but the old thermometer is about to head upward.

We have another interesting feature in the form of a low pressure area aloft
centered over the Carolinas. All around that low the temperatures are cooler
aloft and this makes the atmosphere a bit nervous. By late morning, a few
thunderstorms had developed over East Tennessee and they will be circulating
toward the SW and south possibly visiting some NE and East Alabama counties
this afternoon and evening. We think they will remain mostly east of the
Birmingham area. For Tuesday, pretty much the same story. Just a slight
chance of a shower or thunderstorm, mostly from Birmingham eastward.

Finally, the low will slowly move east replaced by a ridge of high pressure
aloft. This always means hotter temperatures. For Wednesday into the
weekend, we see little or no chance of rain with high temperatures hanging
out around the 90-degree mark.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is a disturbed weather area producing cloudiness
and showers from the Bay of Campeche (the very bottom of the Gulf of Mexico)
and extending ENE across the Yucatan, the NW Caribbean, Western Cuba and
South Florida. A trough of low pressure at the surface is the reason.
Upstairs the winds do not favor tropical development.

MONDAY MEANDERING: The big action (meaning severe weather) has been up near
the Canadian border lately especially across Montana, the Dakotas and into
Minnesota. In Montana, a wind gust to 82 mph Sunday at both Miles City and
Custer. Hailstones 1 inch in diameter fell at Petroleum. (How's that for the
name of a town?)...temperature extremes 109 Sunday at Casa Grande and
Coolidge, Arizona...32 this morning at Lake Tahoe and at Stanley, Idaho...on
this date in 1993, tropical storm Arlene dumped 9-10 inches or rain on
Corpus Christi. Those names are recycled every six years, so we have had two
more Arlenes including one a little over a week ago.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little constant pal, Little Miss Molly, is
becoming addicted to tummy rubs and to gentle loving and cuddling beside me
on the couch. Of course, I get a lot of good out of that too. Over the
weekend, I spent two hours in a row bonding even more. But Sunday morning,
she woofed me out of bed at 4:45 a.m. for an early, early walk...check the
Birmingham News tomorrow. They're going to run a story on how to help your
pets get through the anxiety of storms or loud noises. I'm going to insist
that little Miss Molly read the story, but she's already got three storm
safe spots in the house where she migrates to...checked in with Bud and
Becki Ledbetter in Jasper who lost both of their dogs in a fairly short
time. First their white spitz and then their yorkie was killed by a
neighbor's rottweiler last New Year's Eve. They still miss both dogs very
much and have not replaced them. They think of them every day. They normally
had the yorkie on a leash, but he slipped out for just a few minutes.
Treasure your pets!
