THE ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: What's up with these fine fallish conditions
across Alabama here in the middle of August? Hey, don't look a gift horse
in the mouth, my grandmother always said, so we will just enjoy it. A
persistent light northeasterly wind flow kept readings a few degrees warmer
than they would have been in some locations, like the Birmingham Airport.
The low at KBHM was observed sometime around 3 a.m. when the mercury stood
at 60F. Huntsville did drop to 54F, which was a record for the date.
Other notable lows across North Alabama: 52 at Cullman and 54 at
Meridianville.

Temperatures today will range into the lower and middle 80s with quite
comfortable dew point readings in the lower 50s. This will mean
refreshingly low humidity values across the state today. Most lows will
stay above 60 tonight, although some of the normally cooler locations (you
know who you are,) may dip into the upper 50s again.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: The easterly flow that is over Alabama will begin to tap a
little Atlantic moisture overnight tonight, raising those dew points ever so
slightly and producing a little bit of cloudiness towards morning. Still, I
think that we will start the day with at least some sunshine, and partly
cloudy skies will prevail throughout the day. Look for highs tomorrow
afternoon to be in the middle to upper 80s. Dew points will be in the still

fairly comfortable lower 60s.

WEEK AHEAD: Monday still looks dry, despite that continued southeasterly
flow. Skies will be partly cloudy. I think that we can keep any shower or
storm chances out until Tuesday, when the surface flow over Alabama turns
more to the southeast and humidity levels rise to summer-like levels. By
Wednesday, our attention will turn to the north, where a cold front will be
on the horizon. It should be close enough to increase our shower and storm
chances by that time, with even better chances Wednesday night. It should
be on top of us Thursday morning, with another dose of cooler and drier air
overspreading the area after that. That spells nice weather for the end of
the week and into the weekend.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic has gone quiet again. The Caribbean
disturbance that was once TD#2 has virtually disappeared and has little
chance of regeneration. The disturbance east of the Leeward Islands is
weak.

OZONE WATCH: ADEM continues a Code YELLOW air quality alert for the
Birmingham metro area today and tomorrow. People who are especially
sensitive should not over exert themselves outdoors during the daytime.
ON THIS DATE IN 1993: Virginia experienced its worst tornado outbreak ever
as eighteen tornadoes rip through the state in five hours. In an average
year, only six tornadoes are reported in the state and the worst outbreak
prior to this date produced just ten. The most devastating tornado caused
severe damage in the historic part of Petersburg. It also ripped apart a
WalMart store at Colonial Heights, killing three people and injuring nearly
200. The F4 twister was the first known violent tornado in Virginia
history. It killed a total of four people and injured 246 along its twelve
mile path. Total damages were nearly $50 million.

...Feels A Little Like Fall...

GOOD MORNING! What a great morning across the area! Several record lows
will be in jeopardy when we get the final tabulations this morning. They
include 58 at Birmingham and 62 at Montgomery. Other records include 56 at
Anniston and 57 at Huntsville. It looks like the opportunity for record
lows is now past, with readings running some 3-5 degrees warmer across the
area tonight. Still refreshing for August in Alabama.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Today will be a gorgeous day, more reminiscent of late
September than mid-August with lots of sunshine, dry conditions and
dewpoints in the lower 50s. High pressure centered over the Appalachian
states will continue to be the main influence in our weather through the
weekend. Conditions should remain mostly sunny and dry on Sunday with highs
making it into the upper 80s.

UPCOMING WEEK: Moisture levels will really start increasing by late on
Sunday as a stronger southeasterly flow starts up. Monday should be dry,
but by Tuesday, high pressure should slide far enough to the east to allow
isolated afternoon and evening storms to reappear. Another front will
approach from the north on Wednesday, increasing shower and storm chances.

TROPICS: The disorganized Caribbean system will move into the Gulf, but
should stay well to the south of Alabama. There is a chance that it will
redevelop as it heads towards the Gulf.

ALLEN: After weakening near Haiti and Jamaica the day before, Hurricane
Allen was again strengthening in the western Caribbean on this date in 1980.
A NOAA aircraft recorded a minimum pressure of 899 millibars (26.55 inches)
while the monster hurricane was just offshore of the Yucatan Peninsula.
Only Hurricane Gilbert, with an all time Atlantic low pressure reading of
888 millibars in 1988, and the infamous Labor Day hurricane of 1935 with a
central pressure of 892 millibars were lower than the lowest of Allen's
three pressure minima.

OUR BELOVED COLD FRONT: It was a delightful experience to see the "cold"
front come through late yesterday. This afternoon the front has pushed all
the way down into north Florida and well south of the Mobile area. So a lot
of people are enjoying the break in heat and humidity. The lowest
temperature in Alabama this morning was a cool 57 at Valley Head in DeKalb
County. Tonight should be our coolest night in this current cool spell. Low
temperatures are going to be quite variable because of the wind. While the
wind will die down in most of the valley areas, it may hold up between 5 and
10 mph in the wide open areas and along the ridges. Here in central Alabama
look for about 56 as an average, but some areas will get no lower than about
62.

The sunshine will stay with us Saturday, Sunday and most of Monday. Our next
chance of rain will be a small risk about Tuesday afternoon. There are some
indications that we may have another front approaching by the middle of next
week.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Alex is long gone. His sustained winds were down to 60
mph and he was centered about 900 miles east of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
He's over much colder waters. What remains of tropical depression number two
that we thought would be Tropical Storm Bonnie by now is over the central
Caribbean Sea. Winds upstairs will become more favorable and it may develop
again. A plane may go into the area on Saturday.

WEEKEND AT THE BEACH: All sunshine for Saturday and Sunday and relatively
comfortable temperatures with lows about 68 and highs about 88. You will
also notice that the humidity is lower than usual. The sea surface
temperature off Dauphin Island is a very warm 87.

FRIDAY SHORT TAKES: Some other low temperatures in Alabama this morning
included 60 in Belle Mina, Owens Crossroads and Scottsboro; 61 in DeSoto
State Park, Cullman and Decatur; 62 in Huntsville...the national low was 28
in Tower, Minnesota. Yesterday they had a very cold 26...it also dropped to
26 at Guttenburg Dam, Iowa...on this date in 1987, 6 inches of rain fell in
one hour at Birmingham Airport. We were in a staff meeting at the time with
the national director and regional director of the NWS and we had to slip
away and issue a flash flood warning!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly must have sensed that a cold
front had passed. Even though we had a midnight play session, she poked me
gently with her paw well before sunrise. I looked up into her face. She
looked so unkempt, but I knew she was ready to go outside. It was great to
be back walking very, very early. We finished our half-mile walk well before
sunrise. One of the community rabbits was sitting in the grass, but only two
feet away from the thick hedgerow (Hare Haven). He let Miss Molly come
within six inches and like a shot out of a cannon, he plunged out of sight.
Molly got very upset. I will be "contracting out" Miss Molly for the next 24
hours or so. All six grandkids will be over for a spend-the-night. We're
trying to let Molly rest today so she can be ready. After they leave
tomorrow, she will be totally pooped and will sleep most of the weekend.
Life goes on.

..A Nice Preview of Autumn...

August days in Alabama don't get much better than this one. We are
forecasting blue sky and sunshine today, with low humidity, a fresh north
breeze, and temperatures about five degrees below normal levels for early
August. That means highs in the mid 80s.

Tonight will feel more like early October, and we are expecting most places
to be in the 54 to 59 degree range by daybreak tomorrow. The record low for
Birmingham on August 7 is 58 degrees, set in fifty four years ago in 1950,
and there is a real chance we will break that record.

The weekend will be dry with only a gradual warming trend. Summer conditions
return early next week with higher humidity levels and hotter afternoons. At
this point it looks like our next rain event will come around the middle of
next week as another front approaches from the north.

TROPICS: Hurricane Alex continues to move away from the U.S. mainland, in
the north Atlantic. The system formerly known as tropical depression two (in
the Caribbean) seems to be getting thunderstorms concentrated near the
center, and it could develop a closed circulation again at some point today.
If this happens, tropical storm Bonnie could form in the northern Caribbean
within the next 36 hours. And, the strong upper trough over the eastern U.S.
will be lifting out late this weekend, and might provide a window for the
system to enter the southeast Gulf of Mexico. We will keep an eye on it.
AT THE BEACH: Delightful weather for the central Gulf coast this weekend
with sunny days and clear nights. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin
Island Sea Lab late yesterday was an amazing 90 degrees. Air temperatures
will peak in the mid to upper 80s.

WANT TO BREATHE SOME WISCONSIN AIR?

Well, we can't say for sure where the air we breathe tomorrow came from, but
Wisconsin and Minnesota is as good a guess as any. For sure it will be a
breath of fresh air with much lower humidity and a bright blue sky. All of
this contrasts rather sharply with the haze, hot temperatures and relatively
unhealthy air that we have had lately.

The cold front was pushing down across North Alabama this afternoon
accompanied by a few thunderstorms. Most of those showers or storms should
be south of the Birmingham area by late afternoon or early evening. It will
then be clearing and noticeably cooler overnight. The wind will not die down
completely in most areas. In the protected valleys, the temperature will
sink to near 60 by morning, but in the wide open spaces and on the ridges it
will be more like 65.

Friday's weather will remind you of autumn. The humidity will be much lower.
We will have total sunshine with a nice breeze from the north and
temperatures only in the mid 80s. We still think our lowest temperature will
be Saturday morning-an average of 57 for a low here in central Alabama. It
may be more like 53 in some of the cooler valleys of north Alabama. Saturday
will also be about as perfect as you can get for August in the Deep South.
Sunday will also be mostly sunny and a little humidity creeps back into the
air by Monday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Amazingly Alex is still a major Category 3 hurricane,
even though he was way out in the Atlantic where he was supposed to have
weakened already. His sustained winds were 120 mph with gusts to 150! He
continues to race ENE over the open Atlantic at 35 mph. He should diminish
considerably by tomorrow. Meanwhile, the second tropical depression of the
season, which we thought would be tropical storm Bonnie by now, is almost
non-existent. It is about 200 miles south of the Dominican Republic and
shows no signs of redevelopment. However, conditions may become more
favorably later and an air force plane will visit it tomorrow.

WANDERING AROUND ON THURSDAY: 115 in Death Valley was the hottest in the
USA yesterday...it was a very chilly 36 this morning at Hibbing in northern
Minnesota...Alabama was sweltering yesterday with 97 in Thomasville and 100
in Montgomery...we all remember the widespread killer heat wave of 1980. On
August 4, the Dallas-Ft. Worth area saw its incredible string of 42 days in
a row over 100 degrees broken. They were to have 18 more 100 plus days in
August and 4 more in September. The unusually severe 1980 heat wave killed
1,200 people across the nation and Alabama was very much affected.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I'm going to have to find a detour when I walk
from my weather office to the kitchen to get my delicious and delectable
coffee. I have to walk right by the couch and little Miss Molly is usually
curled up on the end or up on the back of the couch where she can see out
four windows at one time. She considers herself the community watch dog and
people on the walking track know she's on duty when they pass our house.
Every time I go by, I have to stop and cuddle Miss Molly for a few minutes.

She is totally irresistible. She is the reason I sometimes get behind on my
weather work, but life goes on.

..A Nice Breath of Fresh Air...

We don’t use words like “cooler”, “less humid”, and “record lows” around here very often in August, but all of them will work nicely in our forecast package today. A rare mid-summer cold front rolls through the state today, helped along by a very deep upper trough developing along the eastern seaboard. A passing shower or storm is possible along the front today, but rainfall amounts should be rather light and spotty due to limited moisture. Then, this afternoon a fresh breeze out of the north will bring in cooler air.

For tomorrow and the weekend, we expect sunny days, clear nights, low humidity, and cool early mornings. Upper 50s are likely both Saturday and Sunday morning, and new record lows are possible across the southeast U.S. Daytime temperatures will top out in the mid 80s tomorrow, and the upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday. Amazingly nice for August in Alabama.

TROPICS: Hurricane Alex continues to accelerate into the north Atlantic, away from the U.S. mainland. And, in the Caribbean, tropical depression two weakened into an open wave during the day yesterday. Should that system get its act together, it should ultimately turn north into the open Atlantic over the weekend.

BAMA HEAT: Montgomery was the hottest place in Alabama with 100 degrees yesterday. Some of us are wondering about the accuracy of the thermometer at Dannelly Field, since it has been quite an outlier lately with very hot readings. Tuscaloosa reached 96 yesterday.

NORTHERN CHILL: The high yesterday in Buffalo, NY was only 69 degrees. Atop Mt. Washington, NH at 8:00 local time last night the temperature was 43 degrees with a cold northwest wind averaging 26 mph.

==================================================================

WAITING AND WATCHING: Maybe we should have a big parade when that cold front comes through Central Alabama by midday tomorrow. Surely there will be dancing in the streets after all the hot weather and air quality alerts we’ve had lately. I jokingly told one of our readers that we would bill them for this nice change in weather, but that we would also give S&H green stamps, which most of you are too young to remember.

That cold front is expected to be close to the Alabama-Tennessee border tomorrow morning. We think it will move through the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston areas around midday. Look for some scattered showers and thunderstorms along and ahead of the front. There is always a chance of a strong storm with a big change like this, but we don’t expect that many showers and storms.

It will be clearing tomorrow night. After that Friday, Saturday and Sunday will be as nice as you could expect for early August. I’m going out on a limb a bit and predict that someplace in north Alabama will report a 53-degree low Saturday morning. Here in central Alabama we look for an average of 58. Another big bonus is much lower humidity, especially Friday and Saturday.

We’re not the only ones in for a nice break. Even down at Gulf Shores highs Saturday and Sunday will be in the upper 80s with mostly sunshine and lower humidity. There are some indications that this front will eventually push all the way into south Florida. In Orlando, the official forecast calls for “sunny and less humid on Saturday with a high of 88.”

TROPICAL WEATHER: No more worry about Hurricane Alex. He is moving faster
and faster out into the open Atlantic. By the time you read this, he will be about 700 miles ENE of the North Carolina Outer Banks.

Meanwhile, the second tropical depression of the season was moving rapidly west about 390 miles SE of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Even though it remains pretty organized, it should become tropical storm Bonnie in the next 24 hours.

THE SUN FINALLY DISAPPEARED: At Barrow, on the north coast of Alaska, the sun finally went down Monday for the first time in almost three months. It did not stay away long. After setting at 1:54 a.m., it rose again one hour and 20 minutes later. That region, of course, has 24 hours of sunlight in summer, while this winter will bring 24 hours of darkness. Have you noticed that our days are also getting shorter? Official sunset for Birmingham today is 7:45, but in late June and early July the sun set 16 minutes later. We’ve also lost 26 minutes of sunlight in the early morning—a net loss of 42 minutes since our longest day.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is unheard of, but little Miss Molly slept
until 9 this morning. That gave me 4 hours of quiet time. I always automatically wake up at 5. It’s my fault that Molly’s sleep is all mixed up. We had another play session shortly after midnight, so she was pooped. One thing for sure—if we get down to our forecast 58 degrees Saturday morning, I’m going to drag Molly out of bed at 5 and have a long walk with her. Sure have spent a lot of time playing with Molly in the last 24 hours. I‘m glad you can‘t hear our conversation when we walk together. I talk to her like she‘s a young child. In one sense she is. Our lives are intertwined and life goes merrily and too rapidly along.

..Cooler Air Arrives Tomorrow...

While today will be another hot and dry day for Alabama, we are all looking
forward to a rare August cold front, which is expected to pass all the way
through the state tomorrow.

The front will bring a few scattered showers and possibly a strong
thunderstorm during the day tomorrow, and then a nice surge of cooler and
drier continental air from Canada. While you won't need sweaters and
jackets, we are expecting early morning low temperatures to drop into the
upper 50s in many areas by early Saturday morning. I expect to see a number
of new record low temperatures across the southeast U.S. on Saturday, and
possibly Sunday as well. During the day, humidity values will remain low,
and afternoon temperatures will be about five degrees below normal for early
August in Alabama. The dry air also means no chance of rain Friday through
the weekend.

TROPICS: Hurricane Alex is moving away from the U.S. mainland after brushing
by the Outer Banks of North Carolina yesterday, and will slowly weaken over
the colder water of the north Atlantic over the next few days.
Elsewhere, tropical depression two is moving through the Windward Islands
this morning, and should strengthen into tropical storm Bonnie at some point
today over the far eastern Caribbean. This system should turn to the north
by the end of the week in response to the deep eastern U.S. trough (the same
one that will bring us cooler air), and it is not a threat for the Gulf of
Mexico.

OZONE ALERT: A code orange ozone alert is in effect again today for the
Birmingham metro area, meaning air quality is expected to be unhealthy for
sensitive groups. Air quality will improve greatly tomorrow.

A NICE COOL DOWN AHEAD: We have more heat to deal with today and Wednesday
and a Code Orange Ozone Alert was still in effect this afternoon. But a cool
front-rather strong for early August-will come through on Thursday. We
expect dry weather through Wednesday, but the front will set off scattered
showers and thunderstorms Thursday. It will also drop our high temperature
into the mid and upper 80s. Look for clearing and cooler weather Thursday
night with lows by Friday morning and again Saturday morning near 60. The
normally cooler north Alabama valleys could easily have lows in the upper
50s. With mostly sunshine, the humidity is going to be much lower on Friday
and Saturday. Just a slight hint of autumn.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Hurricane Alex reached Category 2 off the Carolina coast
this morning. By late morning, sustained winds had reached near 100 mph with
gusts to 120. He churned up waves as high as 22 feet off shore. Fortunately,
Alex was passing just east of Cape Hatteras this afternoon and will continue
out over the open Atlantic. Meanwhile, a new tropical depression was born
east of the Lesser Antilles. This one will probably become Tropical Storm
Bonnie fairly quickly even before it reaches the Lesser Antilles. It was
moving west at 21 mph.

THE BEAUTY OF TUMBLEWEEDS: They were the subject of a famous western song,
"Tumbling Tumbleweeds" by the Sons of the Pioneers. I was reminded of that
when I saw a report from the 33/40 weather watcher in Billings, Montana
telling about strong microburst winds, blowing dust and tumbleweeds over the
weekend. I remember well driving through a blinding dust storm on the
eastern plains of New Mexico with big airborne tumbleweeds bouncing off my
car. By the way, congratulations to Todd Foisy. After graduating from the
University of Utah, he is now on the staff of the National Weather Service
in Billings, Montana. He is a native of Birmingham (Huffman)

LOOKING EVERYWHERE: Yes, elevation is the reason that both the highest and
lowest temperature in the USA was in California. It was 114 Monday in Death
Valley and 34 this morning at Truckee...great radar signatures on Hurricane
Alex this morning from North Carolina coastal radar. You could actually see
when Alex curved more to the NE...on this date in 1970, powerful Hurricane
Celia went ashore just north of Corpus Christi. It was a major disaster with
wind gusts up to 180 mph. Corpus Christi was severely damaged with 8,950
homes destroyed.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Exactly 22 seconds after little Miss Molly
crawled out of bed this morning, she was assembling toys in the middle of
the floor and looking at me eyeball to eyeball wanting to play. Of course, I
did even though I was in the midst of my delicious and delectable shredded
wheat...still doing highly scientific research to make it taste
better...buttermilk helps. Not a single bird on our early morning walk.
Seems like they have vanished from the face of the earth. Didn't see any
mosquitoes, but I had a sheet of Bounce in my shirt pocket. My thanks to two
of our readers in Hueytown and Columbiana for tipping me off on how Bounce
keeps varmints away. A lady in Columbiana also sent a nice little aid that
should make my forecasts a bit more accurate. Need all the help I can get.
Life goes on even when our friends the crows and other birds abandon us.

..The Heat Cranks Up Again...

Sizzling summer heat headlines our forecast for the next two days, but
relief is in sight by the end of the week. Temperatures are expected to
reach the mid 90s today and tomorrow, with little if any chance of a cooling
afternoon shower.

Later in the week, a major mid-summer trough forms over the eastern states
in the upper atmosphere, and will drive a rare August cold front through
Alabama on Thursday. A few showers and strong storms are likely during the
front's passage, followed by a very unusual breath of Canadian air for
Friday and the weekend.

Don't get out the sweaters and jackets, but we are expecting highs only in
the 80s, lower humidity, and cooler nights. We will be flirting with new
record lows around here both Saturday and Sunday morning, and some of the
cooler valleys should wind up in the upper 50s. A nice preview of the fall
season.

ALEX: Hurricane warnings are up for the outer banks of North Carolina today
as Alex approaches from the south. The system is expected to reach minimal
hurricane status at anytime as it moves over the warm waters of the Gulf
stream. Tomorrow Alex will accelerate to the northeast, out into the open
waters of the Atlantic.

BONNIE? A strong tropical wave about 500 miles east of the Windward Islands
could become a tropical depression today, and tropical Bonnie at some point
during the mid-week period. This system should ultimately turn northward
late this week in response to the developing eastern U.S. trough, and is not
expected to reach the Gulf of Mexico or the U.S. mainland.

HODGEPODGE: Richmond, VA was soaked with 2.03" of rain yesterday. National
hot spot was Death Valley, CA with 114.

HEATING UP THEN COOLING OFF: We have seen more than the usual number of
"cool fronts" slide through central Alabama in the last couple of weeks. Now
we have another one on the far north horizon that may give us some very
pleasant weekend temperatures and much lower humidity.

Unfortunately before that happens, we will have to deal with some very hot
weather. There is a chance that Wednesday may be our hottest day so far this
year and even tomorrow will come close. As that cool front gets closer to
the Alabama-Tennessee border, some scattered showers and thunderstorms will
occur Thursday, but it will turn cooler later Thursday night. Friday should
be mostly sunny with a nice drop in humidity and high temperatures backing
off to the mid 80s. By Saturday morning, we could see temperatures as low as
60 with some upper 50s in the cooler north Alabama valleys.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Alex was moving slowly NNE this afternoon
from a position about 115 miles SE of Charleston. He should continue NE and
the center may be slowly approaching the Carolina coast line over the next
24 hours. He has the potential to reach hurricane force in the next day or
so. Meanwhile, well out in the Atlantic, a tropical wave was 900 miles east
of the Windward Islands moving west at 20 mph. In the next day or so, that
could become tropical storm Bonnie.

DATELINE HACKLEBURG: That is a neat town in NW Alabama, located on US 43 in
extreme North Marion County between Russellville and Hamilton. It's the home
town of country music star Sonny James. They really got inundated Saturday
morning. David Brown, who doubles as the official NWS observer and a 33/40
weather watcher, reported 5.60 inches of rain in only two hours! Guin, also
in Marion County got four inches.

HOW DID WE DO IN JULY? As usual, a great variation in rainfall amounts due
to the scattered nature of summer thunderstorms. Here are some totals for
July:

3.31 inches at Birmingham Airport with rain on 11 days.
7.05 at Anniston Airport occurring on 9 days
2.98 at Tuscaloosa on 11 days
6.09 at Greystone Farms on 9 days
5.00 in Vincent
8.12 in Hackleburg
3.04 at Smith Station on 9 days (Lee County)
8.49 at Florence (Central Highlands) on 13 days

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly keeps one step ahead of us.
She found a mechanical pencil and chewed off both ends. Also, she went in
the bathroom and got a heavy floor mat almost half her weight, drug it all
the way into the living area and was wrestling with it. That's the first
time she's bothered anything like that. She also has a bed on the floor and
she often flips it over time after time all the way across the room. I have
been playing with her using four balls. While she's chasing one across the
room, I kick or toss the others and it drives her up the wall. She will come
running back to me and drop one of the balls on my feet, then dash off to
retrieve another. After about 10 minutes of that, her little tongue is
almost touching the floor. We enjoy life together and life goes on.

..Getting Ready To Bake...

GOOD MORNING! He airmass over Alabama began to subtly dry out over the
weekend, and it produced a very nice, albeit warm, Sunday across the area.
Showers and storms were limited to parts of South and East Central Alabama.
Even more dry air will filter down into Alabama today, and we will see
dewpoints drop down into the upper 60s. Look for a sunny and hot day today
with almost non chance of rain. Temperatures will rise well into the 90s
across the area, with about 93 the median. Some of the normally hotter
locations, like Tuscaloosa, may reach the upper 90s. Look for Tuesday and
Wednesday to be even hotter, with mid 90s likely in most area both days, and
a few locations will likely see 100. The hottest reading so far this year
in Birmingham was 95 on July 24th. We may exceed that this week. Even
though it will be hot this week, it will not be unusual. After all, this is
August in Alabama. We would have to go into triple digits to break records
on most days this week. Still, heat indices will approach dangerous levels
this week.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE: Now, I say that there is virtually no chance of rain
Monday and Tuesday, and I think that is a safe statement. But, we will be
in a northerly flow aloft, and that sometimes means storms drop into from
the Midwest. By Wednesday, a large trough will be developing over the
eastern United States. This will allow a frontal zone to set up from the
Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic states. This front will sag towards
Alabama by Thursday and Friday. As moisture levels increase, isolated
storms will occur by Wednesday, and become scattered for the last two days
of the work week ahead.

TROPICS: TS Alex is still off the South Carolina coast this morning. The
storm will move just offshore of the coast of South and North Carolina later
today. It will probably reach a max intensity of about 60 mph. A strong
tropical wave is crossing the Atlantic. It will likely become a depression
this week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: A Delta Airline jet crashed during a thunderstorm on
approach to the Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, killing 135 people.

GOOD AFTERNOON! Showers have been extremely rare south of I-20 and east of
I-65 across Alabama this afternoon. A couple of tiny showers appeared near
Muscle Shoals, where they set a rainfall record for July 31st yesterday,
when 2.88 inches fell during morning thunderstorms. All of today's activity
has been over East Central Alabama, mainly from about Montgomery to
Lineville. We will pretty much say goodbye to shower and storm chances for
the next couple of days as a northerly flow aloft and at the surface will
continue to mix in drier air.

You can expect lots of sunshine Monday and Tuesday, and with lots of
insolation, temperatures are going to be soaring. We will experience
readings well into the 90s through at least Thursday. We should see highs
consistently in the middle 90s, with a few upper 90s and even some isolated
readings above the century mark. Our low level flow should become southerly
by Wednesday, allowing for the return of those typical isolated afternoon
and evening thunderstorms. With a northwesterly flow aloft, we can't rule
out the possibility of a dying storm complex dropping from the Midwest, but
chances are slim.

A cold front will drop into the Ohio Valley on Wednesday and down into
Tennessee on Thursday. By Friday, it will be edging into Northeast Alabama.
This front will try to come in through the back door as we head into the
weekend. In any case, it will serve to increase showers and storm chances
as we head toward Friday and into the weekend.

TROPICS: Our tropical depression off of the South Carolina coast became a
little better organized this morning. The Air Force reconnaissance plane
found that the storm had winds of tropical storm force, so it was named
Tropical Storm Alex on the 1 pm advisory. Tropical storm warnings were
already flying from Cape fear to Cape Hatteras on the North Carolina coast.
Now they are joined by a tropical storm watch from Edisto Beach, South
Carolina to Cape Fear. The system is expected to brush the South Carolina
coast and skim along most of the North Carolina coast on Monday. It will
then merge with a large non-tropical low over the Northeast U.S.

Our Gulf system remains unimpressive. There is a tropical wave about
halfway between Africa and the islands of the Caribbean. It will be
monitored over the next few days as it does have the potential to develop.

ON THIS DATE IN 1942: Weather forecasting is critical to many military
operations. In 1943, Allied forces were planning a major bombing raid on
the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. Because the nearest air bases were
in North Africa and the distance o the target was at the limit of range for
the B-24 aircraft, weather conditions had to be just right. The bombers
could encounter no heavy headwinds coming or going and southerly winds would
have to be present to spread the fires started by the incendiary bombs.
Meteorologists studied forty years of weather maps to discover that
climatological conditions were right only in March and August. Planners
chose August and conditions were right on August 1st. The raid was a
success.

..Rising Temps Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! On the weather maps this morning, we find our weak and washed
out cool front somewhere to the northwest of Birmingham. It may slide past
the area, or it may just dissipate during the day today. But slightly drier
air will be filtering slowly in the state over the next couple of days,
thanks to northwesterly winds aloft and at the surface. This will spell
mainly dry conditions for the first part of the new week. With the front
around today, we will see a continued chance of storms, but they will be
less numerous than today, except over southeastern sections. Highs today
will reach near 90 degrees in most sections. We should be dry into midweek
before another front approaches the area Thursday or Friday, increasing rain
chances.

TROPICS: Tropical depression number one is located about 50 miles southeast
of Charleston, SC. The depression may become a tropical storm later on
Monday. If it does, it will be named Alex. The system is expected to brush
the South Carolina coast between Charleston and Myrtle Beach this afternoon,
then move back over the water. It may make a second landfall near
Wilmington, NC then skim along the coast of the Tar Heel State, crossing the
Pamlico Sound and exiting the Outer Banks near Nags Head. If it does become
a tropical storm, it will probably not be able to attain an intensity
greater than 45 mph. Our Gulf system continues on a westward track with
little possibility for development. There is a significant looking tropical
wave about 700 miles west of the Cape Verde Islands in the far Atlantic, It
is getting to be that time if year....

ON THIS DATE IN 1981: Andrews AFB MD recorded a wind gust to 149 mph in a
microburst that occurred just ten minutes after Air Force One had landed
with President Reagan aboard. Such microbursts have been the cause of
terrible plane crashes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1976: Colorado was reeling in the wake of one of its
greatest disasters ever. The Big Thompson Canyon flood claimed 139 lives.
