WANT TO BREATHE SOME WISCONSIN AIR?

Well, we can't say for sure where the air we breathe tomorrow came from, but
Wisconsin and Minnesota is as good a guess as any. For sure it will be a
breath of fresh air with much lower humidity and a bright blue sky. All of
this contrasts rather sharply with the haze, hot temperatures and relatively
unhealthy air that we have had lately.

The cold front was pushing down across North Alabama this afternoon
accompanied by a few thunderstorms. Most of those showers or storms should
be south of the Birmingham area by late afternoon or early evening. It will
then be clearing and noticeably cooler overnight. The wind will not die down
completely in most areas. In the protected valleys, the temperature will
sink to near 60 by morning, but in the wide open spaces and on the ridges it
will be more like 65.

Friday's weather will remind you of autumn. The humidity will be much lower.
We will have total sunshine with a nice breeze from the north and
temperatures only in the mid 80s. We still think our lowest temperature will
be Saturday morning-an average of 57 for a low here in central Alabama. It
may be more like 53 in some of the cooler valleys of north Alabama. Saturday
will also be about as perfect as you can get for August in the Deep South.
Sunday will also be mostly sunny and a little humidity creeps back into the
air by Monday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Amazingly Alex is still a major Category 3 hurricane,
even though he was way out in the Atlantic where he was supposed to have
weakened already. His sustained winds were 120 mph with gusts to 150! He
continues to race ENE over the open Atlantic at 35 mph. He should diminish
considerably by tomorrow. Meanwhile, the second tropical depression of the
season, which we thought would be tropical storm Bonnie by now, is almost
non-existent. It is about 200 miles south of the Dominican Republic and
shows no signs of redevelopment. However, conditions may become more
favorably later and an air force plane will visit it tomorrow.

WANDERING AROUND ON THURSDAY: 115 in Death Valley was the hottest in the
USA yesterday...it was a very chilly 36 this morning at Hibbing in northern
Minnesota...Alabama was sweltering yesterday with 97 in Thomasville and 100
in Montgomery...we all remember the widespread killer heat wave of 1980. On
August 4, the Dallas-Ft. Worth area saw its incredible string of 42 days in
a row over 100 degrees broken. They were to have 18 more 100 plus days in
August and 4 more in September. The unusually severe 1980 heat wave killed
1,200 people across the nation and Alabama was very much affected.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I'm going to have to find a detour when I walk
from my weather office to the kitchen to get my delicious and delectable
coffee. I have to walk right by the couch and little Miss Molly is usually
curled up on the end or up on the back of the couch where she can see out
four windows at one time. She considers herself the community watch dog and
people on the walking track know she's on duty when they pass our house.
Every time I go by, I have to stop and cuddle Miss Molly for a few minutes.

She is totally irresistible. She is the reason I sometimes get behind on my
weather work, but life goes on.
