..A Nice Breath of Fresh Air...

We don’t use words like “cooler”, “less humid”, and “record lows” around here very often in August, but all of them will work nicely in our forecast package today. A rare mid-summer cold front rolls through the state today, helped along by a very deep upper trough developing along the eastern seaboard. A passing shower or storm is possible along the front today, but rainfall amounts should be rather light and spotty due to limited moisture. Then, this afternoon a fresh breeze out of the north will bring in cooler air.

For tomorrow and the weekend, we expect sunny days, clear nights, low humidity, and cool early mornings. Upper 50s are likely both Saturday and Sunday morning, and new record lows are possible across the southeast U.S. Daytime temperatures will top out in the mid 80s tomorrow, and the upper 80s on Saturday and Sunday. Amazingly nice for August in Alabama.

TROPICS: Hurricane Alex continues to accelerate into the north Atlantic, away from the U.S. mainland. And, in the Caribbean, tropical depression two weakened into an open wave during the day yesterday. Should that system get its act together, it should ultimately turn north into the open Atlantic over the weekend.

BAMA HEAT: Montgomery was the hottest place in Alabama with 100 degrees yesterday. Some of us are wondering about the accuracy of the thermometer at Dannelly Field, since it has been quite an outlier lately with very hot readings. Tuscaloosa reached 96 yesterday.

NORTHERN CHILL: The high yesterday in Buffalo, NY was only 69 degrees. Atop Mt. Washington, NH at 8:00 local time last night the temperature was 43 degrees with a cold northwest wind averaging 26 mph.
