GOOD AFTERNOON: Well, our temperatures have been transported back in time
a couple of months overnight. And it is windy, too! Winds are averaging
10-20 mph out of the northwest, with occasional gusts as high as 30 mph. A
wind advisory is in effect for the afternoon hours. Those winds will
actually help to prevent a freeze tonight....
FROSTY FORECAST: We will be close to a light frost tonight, but those brisk
winds will actually help to prevent it. That seems backwards, doesn't it.
Actually, cooling at night occurs as the heat in the lowest layer of the
atmosphere is radiated outward. Those winds tonight will help to mix the
atmosphere and prevent frost from forming. Overnight temperatures will
average 33-38 degrees.
SUNDAY/MONDAY: Tomorrow will feature lots of sun, but a good bit of wind,
again, too. High temperatures will rise to near 60 degrees again. Lows
Sunday night will be a few degrees warmer than tonight, squelching any
additional frost talk. Monday will start off with a good deal of sunshine,
but skies will become cloudy by dark. Highs Monday will be in the upper
60s.
ANOTHER SEVERE EVENT EARLY IN THE WEEK? The large upper level low pressure
system that is controlling much of the weather across the United States will
still be there Monday, just in a weaker state. But it will still be
steering weather systems east of the Continental Divide. Our next weather
maker will be a low that will develop over the Plains and move southeastward
in the cyclonic (counter clockwise) flow around the upper low. This low will
be over Oklahoma Monday morning. It will not have the deep moisture to work
with that this last weather system had, so it will struggle to produce
severe weather. But as always, it is still Spring in Alabama, and we will
have to monitor the system carefully. .
RECORD BIN: The 2.34 inches of rain that fell at Indianapolis on Friday was
a record for the date. Dayton also established a daily record with 1.31
inches of precip.
WEATHER NOTEBOOK: There was a lucky school group in Jackson, Mississippi
yesterday. They had a field trip scheduled to the National Weather Service
office. Usually, two balloons are released at 1200 GMT and 0000 GMT (7 a.m.
CDT and 7 p.m. CDT respectively.) When there is severe weather, a special
balloon release might be requested at six hour intervals. Yesterday, the
NWS Jackson ordered a special release at 1600Z (11 a.m. CDT) for the school
group. The information was helpful to the forecasters in determining the
depth of the moisture and the lapse rate (the drop in temperature with
height.) This helped them to know that storms would develop explosively
during the afternoon.
ON THIS DATE IN 2001: Satellite photos of the region from northern Colorado
to southern South Dakota looked as if a 300 mile wide white stripe had been
painted across the landscape. Nature had done the artwork as a storm system
produced heavy snow across the area. The heaviest snow fell over the
eastern foothills and Black Hills of South Dakota where 12-22 inches of snow
covered the ground. The 20 inches of snow that fell on the 23rd in Rapid
City set a daily record for the day.
