...Interesting Week Ahead...

For the first time in many moons, I am able to write that we have a
rainfall SURPLUS for the year. We started out behind the curve last
year and things only got worse. And if you removed large rainfall
amounts from tropical systems or unusual heavy rainfall events, some
of the other past years would have been even drier. The good news is
that Thursday's widespread rainfall helped a little, and we have a
couple of additional good rainfall events in our forecast future. We
might even a have a chance for a little wintry precipitation.

REST OF YOUR WEEKEND: Enjoying a nice, fairly mild Saturday
afternoon across Alabama. Skies are partly cloudy and temperature are
heading toward highs right around 60 degrees. Clouds will be on the
increase this evening and though the overnight as a fairly potent
little upper level disturbance swings our way. There could be a
sprinkle during the overnight hours into the early morning as this
system approaches, but it is moisture starved. On Sunday, skies will
be partly cloudy with a fresh northwest breeze. Highs will be in the
50s. Look for clear and calm conditions Sunday night with widespread
lows in the 20s.

MIDWEEK SYSTEM: On Monday and Tuesday, our weather will be
mainly influence by a broad trough of low pressure over the Tennessee
and Ohio Valley, resulting in cool but dry conditions. There could be
patchy cloudiness as a couple of spokes of energy rotate through the
trough. By Tuesday night, high pressure should be centered over North
Alabama and a low will be forming in the western Gulf. The track of
any Gulf low like this is critical for snow fans. Too far south, and
the moisture stay well to our south. Too far north and we are too
warm for snow. The last couple of runs of the main forecasting model
push the storm track further south. This would keep us dry and
require a major change in my forecast for Wednesday as the system will
be later and too far south for us to get rain or snow. Colder air is
pulled southward into Alabama as this system exits to the northeast
and we go well below freezing Thursday night.

WEEKEND SYSTEM: We stay in the 30s on Friday and there could
be a passing snow flurry across the Tennessee Valley. We get quite
cold Friday night, with lows in the lower 20s. The models have been
promoting the idea of a second Gulf low on Friday, but that concept is
gone off of the morning run of the GFS. Will it stay that way? Only
time will tell. Suffice to say there is a lot of uncertainty in the
forecast for the week ahead.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: An amazing lake effect snow event
off on Lake Ontario brought 86 inches of snow in 48 hours to Montague
NY, a sparsely populated town northeast of Syracuse. The town is
located atop the Tug Hill Plateau and is notorious for heavy lake
effect snows off on Lake Ontario. Seventy inches of snow fell in less
than 24 hours. Seventy five inches of snow was on the ground at one
point. The snow fell for an unusually long time. 250 inches of snow
had already fallen during the season, which was just forty inches shy
of the average for a whole season.

...Interesting Times Ahead..

EF3 tornadoes in January. Snow in Baghdad. Historic drought
conditions. A memorable early January warm spell. These are the
times that try weathermen's souls.

WEEKEND WEATHER: High pressure over eastern Kentucky will give us a
pleasant Saturday. After a chilly start, temperatures will warm to
around 60 degrees in most locations. A strong upper level disturbance
is passing out of New Mexico into Texas this morning. This
disturbance will swing through Alabama tonight. It won't have much to
work with in the way of moisture, so clouds will be the main effect.
There could be a few sprinkles or snow flurries tonight also.
Meanwhile, a low will form on the old front in the Gulf of Mexico.
This low will move quickly northeast on Sunday, and any precipitation
will stay well to our south. Cooler air will flow into Alabama on the
northerly flow behind the low. Skies will be partly cloudy with highs
in the 50s. Readings will drop back to freezing overnight.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We start the week off with dry conditions as surface
high pressure remains in control of our weather. Seasonably cool
conditions will prevail with highs around 50F and lows around
freezing. By Tuesday night, a big low will be forming over the
western Gulf. This low will move eastward spreading moisture up into
Alabama bringing us a cold rain Wednesday afternoon and night. A
little more colder air will filter into Alabama behind this system and
there could be a few snow flurries Thursday.

SOME WINTER ACTION NEXT WEEKEND? A second system will follow quickly
on the heels of the first one. And colder air may well be in place
for this one. One plausible solution is that moisture will spread
into the colder air starting Friday morning and areas generally along
and north of I-59 could see all snow for the event. Colder air will
spread in through the day, and snow could be seen as far south as
I-85. This could be a significant snowfall event for parts of
Alabama, but caution that it is way early in the game. A few
flurries could continue over the northern half of the area for part of
the day on Saturday.

SNOW IN BAGHDAD: Snow fell in Baghdad! Something most of the
population had never seen. Some areas around the city received up to
two inches of the white stuff on Friday. An unusual meteorological
setup of cold air from the Asian continent and moist air from the
Mediterranean led to the situation. Up to 20 inches was reported
across part of Iran. I hear you snow fans: it really is bad when it
is snowing in Iraq but we can't buy a flake in Birmingham, Alabama.
Could that be about to change?

ON THIS DATE IN 1888: "Schoolhouse Blizzard of 1888" Major blizzard
strikes without warning from Dakotas to Texas. The storm struck after
a warm, spring like morning, catching people off guard. Many children
were stranded in one room schoolhouses, so the name. More than 200
people were killed, including many school kids. Thousands of cattle
are killed. This storm would be overshadowed later by the Great
Blizzard of 1888 that struck New York in March.

A GOOD SOAKING: First we want to mention that an NWS survey team
checked out yesterday afternoon's tornado in North Tuscaloosa County
around Windham Springs and Wiley. They confirm that it was and EF3
tornado with estimated winds of 140 to 150 mph. It cut a path almost 5
miles long and was 350 yards wide at its widest point. Five buildings
were completely destroyed and about 300 trees uprooted. In Lamar
County, the worst damage was an EF2 and in Pickens County and EF1.
It was a stormy day and night across the state with the main storms
shifting into SE Alabama after nightfall. We must be thankful for some
extremely beneficial rain amounts. We have posted another extensive
list of those on the 33/40 weather blog, but here are a few of the
heavier amounts:

4.50 Vernon in Lamar County
3.40 Crossville
3.08 Troy
2.29 Valley Head
2.59 Ft. Payne
2.51 Cordova

Numerous other communities in the state received well over 1 inch of
rain and many others between ½ and 1 inch.
Now we are going into a dry mode. We have omitted any mention of a
little light rain Sunday. The low-pressure area that was going to
cause that looks like it will cross North Florida and pass east of
Charleston and Savannah.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Signs at this time point to next Wednesday for our
next rain event, especially later in the day and at night. Meanwhile,
our temperatures for the next five days will be a bit on the chilly
side, but we can take them. No bitter cold and no unseasonable warmth.
We are projecting low to mid 30s for the next two nights and upper 20s
for Monday and Tuesday mornings. It was interesting to note that the
National Temperature and Precipitation Tables listed Evergreen, in
South Alabama, as the warmest spot in the nation yesterday with 87. We
immediately knew that was an error.

THE WORLD AROUND US: Baghdad is as hot as a cook stove in summer and
dry as a bone. For days on end, the thermometer boils in 110 to 120-
degree heat. Great excitement this morning as snow flurries occurred.
Not very many, but it was the first time in memory for most residents.
One 80-year-old lady, who had lived there all her life, said that was
a first. One of our most enjoyable campsites out west is Vallecito
Reservoir in SW Colorado. This morning they had 5 below zero with 31
inches of snow on the ground. At Gothic, Colorado, elevation 9,469
feet, there was 60 inches on the ground. Alta, Utah has 82 inches.
Coldest temperatures this morning were 15 below at Antero Reservoir,
Colorado and 49 below at Buckline, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is well over 5 years
old and you would think she would begin to slow down a bit. She seems
to pack more and more energy every year. If I had yielded to her
commands, I would have already had 10 ballgames with her this morning.
I cannot even grab a cup of coffee without her grabbing a ball and
slinging it at my feet. I often get behind in my work just because of
that little 9-pound dynamo. However, I would not change her even if I
could. Life goes on and she gets a whole lot of loving......

...A Change To Cooler Weather..

COOLER DAYS AHEAD: Following yesterday's round of severe thunderstorms
and heavy rain, cooler air returns to Alabama today. We are
forecasting a high of 55 degrees, which is only three degrees above
the average high of 52. Tonight, temperatures will drop quickly with a
fair sky and a light wind, and by daybreak tomorrow we will be in the
32 to 35 degree range.

OUR WEEKEND: Tomorrow will be another dry day with a mix of sun and
clouds. Clouds will then increase tomorrow night as a wave of low
pressure forms in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and that system has the
potential to bring some light rain to Alabama by Sunday morning. At
this point it looks like moisture will be rather limited and rain
totals will be light. As the system moves up the Atlantic coast Sunday
evening, colder air will drop into Alabama, and a few snow flakes
(mostly light flurries) could be found over Northeast Alabama, but for
now it doesn't look look like a big issue. The first two days of next
week will be dry but rather chilly with highs in the upper 40s and
early morning lows in the 27 to 32 degree range.

YESTERDAY'S STORMS: Severe thunderstorms produced damage in a number
of West Alabama counties yesterday. Some of the most serious damage
was in the small community of Wiley, in far northern Tuscaloosa County
(near Windham Springs), where a store and church were destroyed, and a
number of homes were damaged. Alabama Highway 69 was blocked for an
hour or so due to downed trees and power lines. That same storm downed
a number of trees across the southern half of Walker County, in places
like Parrish, Gorgas, and Cordova. Another severe storm and possible
tornado produced major tree and some structural damage in Lamar
County, west of Vernon. That same storm dropped a tornado in
Caledonia, Mississippi (just a few miles west of the Alabama state
line), and destroyed a school and damaging many homes. Despite the
school damage, all of the students were safe and unhurt. The three
injuries in Caledonia were people who were in mobile homes.

BIG TIME RAIN TOTALS: Much of Alabama received beneficial rain
yesterday. Rain totals included 2.26" at Cordova, 1.98" at Riverchase
(the ABC 33/40 Weather Center), 1.77" at Alabaster, 1.69" at Jasper,
1.69" at Haleyville, 1.65" at Trussville (Bill Murray's place in the
southern part of Trussville), 1.54" at Argo, 1.37" at Haleyville,
1.27" at Hayden, 1.14" at Vinemont, and 1.05" at Jemison. There was
even some localized flooding; something we have not experienced in a
long time.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Rain totals in other states yesterday
included 2.00" at Nashville, 1.59" at Memphis, and 1.33" at Lexington,
KY. The warmest spot in the nation yesterday was Naples, Florida with
84.

...A Stormy Time...

UNUSUAL SEVERE WEATHER FOR JANUARY: Here in Alabama in the Deep
South, we normally have two severe weather seasons. Our prime season
is in the spring from March to mid May. Over the long history, that is
the time of year that more often than not we get our worst tornadoes.
We do have a secondary season in autumn from November through mid
December. We can occasionally get some serious tornadoes then also. The
situation today is rather unusual. We are in mid Winter, of course,
and here we are with a Moderate Risk of severe weather. That does not
happen very often, especially not in January. A Tornado Watch was
issued that is in effect for the rest of this afternoon for a large
part of North and West Alabama. It is labelled as a "particularly
dangerous situation." This means that a few of the tornadoes could be
very strong and possibly stay on the ground a long time. Probably the
worst time for the severe weather in the greater Birmingham area will
be from mid afternoon through this evening. At some point, a line of
intense thunderstorms will cross the area and a number of those could
produce damaging winds. In West Alabama, the threat of tornadoes will
start earlier and continue through the afternoon. Finally, over in
East Alabama in places like Anniston and Roanoke, the main risk for
severe weather will be mid to late afternoon and extending well into
the night time.

RAIN PROSPECT: These storms will be dumping locally heavy rain. It is
possible that many places will get between 1 and 2 inches of rain.
Cooler dry air will overspread the area Friday. Saturday should also
be dry. We may see a little bit of rain on Sunday and mostly sunny
again on Monday. Our coldest temperatures will be early Monday with
lows in the mid to upper 20s.

THE WORLD AROUND US: 81 in Miami and Ft. Lauderdale were the warmest
in the country yesterday.

Coldest this morning was 15 below at Gunnison, Colorado. There can be
some extreme temperature changes in the middle of the country. One of
those occurred on this date in 1911 at Rapid City, South Dakota when
the temperature dropped an amazing 47 degrees in only 15 minutes.
Also, in past history at Browning, Montana, right up against the edge
of the Rockies, the temperature once took a nosedive of 100 degrees in
24 hours.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Last night when those showers moved
through, we heard only one peal of thunder. It was off to the east and
barely audible. However, that was enough to send Little Miss Molly
into the far back bedroom, then through the bathroom and into the
clothes closet to hide. She was shaking like a leaf. When we finally
went to bed around midnight, she was still frightened and it took us
about 30 minutes to rub her back and tummy and calm her down so she
could go to sleep. I have never seen a little doggie so scared of
thunder. Life goes on.
