...Interesting Days Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Remember those Ziggy greeting cards? The little round man
who always seemed to run into trouble? One showed Ziggy lying at the beach
listening to the weatherman say, "It's a gorgeous day out there," even as a
tornado appears on the horizon. One card showed several "you know it's
going to be a bad day when..." One cartoon showed a guy walking along when
he sees a bearded man building a gigantic ark in his back yard. I had my
own personal Ziggy yesterday afternoon when I got a note from my boss, the
esteemed James Spann warning that the forecast would be challenging this
weekend with the prospect of some really cold weather ahead during the first
half of March.

TODAY AND TONIGHT: No chilly weather today. In fact, readings will be in
the 0s today across the area with lots of sunshine. Skies should be partly
cloudy tonight with lows dropping to near 40, give or take a few degrees.

SUNDAY: Clouds return quickly on Sunday as low pressure develops to the
southwest of Alabama and heads our way. Rain will move into our area during
the day and continue through the overnight hours. Rainfall amounts will
average one half inch, with a few locally higher totals.

WORK WEEK AHEAD: Monday will feature clouds and colder conditions, along
with a little morning light rain. Readings may not get out of the 30s over
the Tennessee Valley. Tuesday should be chilly, but dry. Clouds will be on
the increase again as another low pressure system forms over the Gulf. This
system should stay well to our south, but with cold air in place over
extreme northern sections, an interesting situation will occur on Thursday
as some light snow might be possible over the Tennessee Valley. The rest of
the area should see a cold rain. Friday will feature clearing and colder
conditions once again.

TO INFINITY AND BEYOND: One thing looks definite. The first half of March
looks cold . Really cold. And really cold weather in the Deep South
provides interesting possibilities for wintry weather. No specific
forecasts at this time, but we will be watching for that rare combination of
cold and Gulf moisture.

...A Light Freeze For Tonight...

Some rain spread across South Alabama during the night while cooler, drier
air was beginning to push into the northern part of the state. With the
South Alabama rain mostly east of the area, skies will be clearing today.
Look for a light freeze tonight over much of North and Central Alabama. In
fact, some of the colder valleys in the north could have some upper 20s. A
milder trend starts Saturday afternoon.

Our weather continues to go through some rather quick changes. As another
low develops in the Gulf of Mexico, rain should spread into Central Alabama
by Sunday afternoon. It will continue off and on through Monday. Then a cold
front will move through early Tuesday bringing clearing and colder weather.

The long-range outlook is for a lot colder weather through the middle and
latter part of next week.

High temperatures Thursday afternoon were mostly in the 50s over the north
with mid 60s from Montgomery southward.

STORM ALERT 2005: There is only one more episode left. Most of the programs
have been on Thursday night, but the last one will be next Wednesday night
(March 2) at the Mountain Top Church in Vestavia.

FRIDAY NOTES: USA temperature extremes Thursday, not counting Alaska,
included 21 below zero at Saranac Lake, New York and 86 at Stuart,
Florida...snow along the mid-Atlantic states during the day in places like
Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Several inches accumulated around
the nation's capitol...the NWS in Los Angeles had to issue a few severe
thunderstorm warnings Thursday, but overall their weather has quieted down
somewhat.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: You would think, since little Miss Molly walks
the same walking track every day, that it would no longer be exciting. Not
so. The minute I open the back door, her tail is swishing as fast as it can
and she is so happy. Sometimes I feel guilty making her be an inside dog,
but she is such a pleasure to have around at all hours. Life goes on.

RAIN BY LATE IN THE WEEKEND: Enjoy today and Saturday because we go back
into wet weather Sunday and Monday. Skies cleared overnight and temperatures
dropped to near freezing over the north this morning. A few of the colder
spots included 30 in Jasper, 31 in Fayette, 32 in Cullman, 33 in Birmingham
and 34 in Pinson and Huntsville.

We should have quite a bit of sunshine Saturday, but clouds will roll back
in for Sunday. Another low pressure system is going to form over the Gulf of
Mexico moving into SW Alabama by nightfall Sunday and across the central
part of the state by Monday morning. Rain should reach Central Alabama by
late morning or midday Sunday and become more widespread later Sunday and
Sunday night. Most communities should get between 1/2 and 3/4 of an inch of
rain. Meanwhile, colder air will spill in behind the low Monday night.
Tuesday should be dry with breezy and colder weather with highs in the upper
40s or low 50s. See our day-by-day forecast for all of the details.

CLEANING OUT MY NOTEBOOK: The Atlantic Seaboard and NE got a good dose of
snowfall from this latest storm. The snow was winding down over New England
early today. An average of 4 to 6 inches fell across Connecticut. In
Massachusetts, as much as 11 inches accumulated in Plymouth and Barnstable
Counties with 9 inches around Hyannis and 8 inches at Boston's Logan
Airport...warm spot yesterday was Devil's Garden in South Florida with
87...coldest in the lower 48 this morning, for the second day in a row, was
at Saranac Lake in Upstate New York with 13 below. Coldest in Alaska was 20
below at Cape Lisburne...in 1934 on this date, at least 6 tornadoes struck
in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia killing 19 persons...hardest hit was
Bowden, Georgia and Shady Grove, Alabama. One home in Lauderdale County,
Mississippi, was picked up, thrown 400 feet and blown to bits killing 6
family members.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly slept through her normal
late night walk. When she got up this morning, she really needed to go. It
was Code Red. No waiting. She really whammed that little bell like a
professional boxer. I had to put my shoes on and she stood on her hind legs,
put her paws on my knee and nodded her head toward the back door. No
kidding. As soon as we were on the walking trail, she stuck her head in the
underbrush looking for her friend, Jo-Jo. I didn't see it and Molly didn't
see it, but there was a bird walking around on the ground in the underbrush
inches from Molly. The bird flew out making a loud fluttering noise and I
thought Molly would have a heart attack. She bolted for home, but I avoided
whiplash...nice email from a reader who has a yellow lab named A. J. who
really knows how to enjoy everything in life. The lady shared today's saying
from her Lab-a-Day desk calendar, "Dogs are God's way of showing us how to
be happy." I agree...and life goes on.

...Very Mild For February...

We need to say up front the forecast for the rest of the week
remains rather complicated due to a "split flow" pattern across the U.S. The
northern branch is pulling much colder down this way from the north, and the
southern branch brings waves of energy in the sub-tropical flow.

While colder air will begin to creep into north Alabama today, we
think most locations close to I-20 (like Birmingham) will rise to near 70
degrees with a mix of sun and clouds. Due to very unstable air, we have
mentioned a few widely scattered showers and storms today, but there is no
well defined triggering device for rain, and many locations will be dry.

The cooler air will drop into central Alabama tonight and tomorrow
with lots of clouds, but not much rain. We do expect rain to increase late
tomorrow and tomorrow night as a wave of low pressure moves along the front.
Looks like the best chance of rain will come from about 6:00 p.m. tomorrow
through 6:00 a.m. Thursday.

WEEKEND PEEK: For now, we are forecasting cool and dry weather on
Saturday, but some rain could begin to develop on Sunday, becoming more
widespread Sunday night and Monday of next week as a disturbance scoots
along the Gulf coast. A sharp change to colder weather is likely toward the
middle of next week.

STORMY MONDAY: Large hail was reported in over a dozen north and
east Alabama counties yesterday and last night. In the Harvest community,
over 10 homes were damaged by falling trees during a severe storm.

STORM ALERT 2005: Our annual severe weather awareness show comes to
Calhoun county this week; we will be at the Oxford Civic Center Thursday
night at 7:00.

...Happy President's Day...

GOOD MORNING! It is good to be home this morning, after a long week
in Vegas and Denver. You know, I didn't get to do any of those fun things I
wanted to do in Vegas. But I am going to go back in April.

BUSY WEATHER WEEK: It will be a busy week here in the weather
office with lots of questions about the forecast.

STORMS TODAY: Showers and storms will be plentiful today in the
warm sector of a low to our northwest. A cold front associated with the low
pressure system will try to drift down into Alabama over the next 36 hours.

TUESDAY/WEDNESDAY: Here is the tricky part of our forecast. If the
front stalls out to our north, conditions could become unstable enough for
strong to severe storms tomorrow. If the front goes to our south, more
stable conditions will prevail, and we might even see partly cloudy skies
return.

Right now, indications are that the front will drift to a position
in Central Alabama, but that is uncertain. A low should slide along the
front on Wednesday, pushing it out of the way and putting an end to the wet
weather.

END OF THE WEEK/WEEKEND: Dry and cooler weather will return for the
end of the week. Friday will feature a return of sunshine, although
temperatures will be cooler than they have been. We will be in the 30s
Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. A weak front will traverse the area
on Saturday, producing a slight chance of showers.

DELTA TORNADO OUTBREAK: Massive tornado outbreak in the Delta
region of northeastern Louisiana and Mississippi on this date in 1971. The
first major tornado touched down that day at about 2:50 p.m. in Louisiana
and crossed into Mississippi. Forty six people were killed by this twister,
which struck the towns of Dehli and Inverness. Over 120 people lost their
lives that day, including 110 in Mississippi. Three of the tornadoes caused
118 of the deaths. Three of the storms were F4s. 1,600 people were injured.
