...A Very Wet Time Ahead...

Little or no rain today, but we have a very wet weather story starting
tonight and lasting through Sunday and Monday. So much so that we may have
to deal with some flooding issues. There is a good chance that a good part
of Central Alabama could receive 2 to possibly 4 inches of rain before the
storm system moves off to the NE.

Could be a scattering of light rain this afternoon. The rain will be more
steady later tonight. Sunday will be the most uncomfortable day of all with
widespread rain, no sunshine and high temperatures only in the lower 50s.
Monday could be the stormiest day as we will also have some thunderstorms
and the rain will be heavy at times. There is a slight risk that a few of
the storms on Monday could become severe, but that is not sealed in stone at
this time.

After a strong low pressure area moves from North Texas and passes near or
north of our area, windy and cooler conditions can be expected Tuesday with
clearing skies. Wednesday looks like mostly sunshine with cool temperatures.
We do not see any prospect of temperatures in the 80s in the near future.

AROUND THE COUNTRY: A hot 90 degrees Friday afternoon at Laredo and
McAllen, Texas was the hottest in the country. This was 100 degrees warmer
than the 10 below Friday morning in Embarrass, Minnesota...Phoenix, which
had gone 143 days without a drop of rain until a few days ago, has now been
blessed with 1.44 inches...to the north, Flagstaff in Northern Arizona had
gone most of the winter with only 1.6 inches of snow. Recent storms have
swelled their total to 33 inches, but that is still 54 inches short of
normal.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure was nice to get Little Miss Molly home
from the PBS (Puppy Beauty Shop) around 4 yesterday. We felt unprotected as
we had no one to alert us from all those tigers, rhinos, grizzly bears and
elephants coming out of the hedgerow. Took her on a nice walk at nightfall.
I got jerked around so hard that my teeth rattled. It seems that Molly
jumped the little community rabbit again. She reversed direction and I
almost lost the leash. I would never have caught her. Life goes on.

LOTS OF RAIN SUNDAY AND MONDAY: The early part of our
weekend is going to be fairly nice, but the weather will take a distinct
turn toward being wet Sunday and Monday. Some scattered light rain could
arrive as early as Saturday night.

Why all the rain Sunday and Monday? The cold front that pushed
through Alabama and was near the Gulf coast today will start back northward
as a warm front by early Monday. Meanwhile, a strong low pressure area will
form over North Texas and move to North Georgia by Tuesday morning. All of
this will pull a lot of moist air north from the Gulf of Mexico. We will
keep an eye on Monday's weather for the outside chance of a few severe
thunderstorms. One of our weather models thinks our dew point will not get
above the 50s on Monday. I tend to think they will get higher than that.
Most of the rain will be over by Tuesday morning and Tuesday should be windy
and cooler with highs only in the 50s.

During all of this, our most uncomfortable day will probably be
Sunday. It will rain much of the day with brisk NE winds and high
temperatures barely making it above 50. Normally, in mid March, our high is
around 67.

SPRING BREAK WEATHER: Here is a spot check of weather at a few
seemingly popular locations for Spring Break.

ORLANDO: The high should be around 82 tomorrow through Tuesday, then
cooling to highs 75-78 Wednesday and Thursday. Dry weather most of the time,

except a slight chance of showers on Tuesday.

GATLINBURG: Dry tomorrow and Sunday. Showers starting Sunday night
becoming numerous Monday. Scattered showers on Tuesday, but fair and dry
weather Wednesday and Thursday. For the next 5 days, highs will be rather
consistently in the 40s in the mountains and 50s in places like Gatlinburg,
Cades Cove and Pigeon Forge.

GULF SHORES: A high near 68 tomorrow with most of the day dry. A
good chance of rain by Sunday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will
continue on Monday. Mostly sunny and cooler Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs
around 78 Monday but cooling to the 60s Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Very little rain after Monday. This forecast is also good for the beach area
of NW Florida.

WASHINGTON: The nation's capitol should have mostly sunshine Sunday
and Monday with lows 28-30 and highs near 50. A chance of rain on Tuesday
with a high of 42. A chance of snow Tuesday night. Fair, dry weather
Wednesday and Thursday with highs both day near 50.

DID YOU KNOW? That the very first weather map published in a daily
newspaper was way back in 1875 in the London Times? Did you know also that a

tornado once ripped away a motel sign in Broken Bow, Oklahoma and carried it
30 miles into Arkansas?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Our abode is so quiet today that it is
uncanny. Yes, we miss Little Miss Molly very much. She is away at the PBS
(Puppy Beauty Shop) for an overdue trim. The place is not the same without
her. Every time I walked from my office to the kitchen today for another cup
of java, I assumed the little girl will jump out at me with her favorite
ball in her mouth ready for a baseball game. I guess I am too attached to
her. She has only been gone 6 hours and I miss her dearly. Cannot wait until
she gets home and we will have a big playtime. I know I am too attached to
her and you probably tire of hearing about it, but she is a big part of my
life. Maybe my life is too simple, but life goes on but Molly and I like it
that way.

...Sunny But Cooler...

Sunshine returns to Alabama today, but temperatures will be cooler. Most
spots will see highs in the low 60s today, about five degrees below normal.
The mercury will drop into the mid to upper 30s by daybreak tomorrow.

Clouds return during the day tomorrow, and some rain should reach the state
tomorrow night as a significant storm system gets its act together west of
Alabama.

GOOD SOAKING: Rain will become widespread on Sunday as the system gets
closer. The northern half of the state should remain in the cool sector of
the storm on Sunday with temperatures holding steady somewhere between 50
and 55 degrees as the rain falls.

Rain and storms are likely Monday of next week (spring break week for
Alabama school kids), and that rain could be heavy at times. At the moment
we don't expect a major severe weather threat due to limited instability.
Some flooding problems could develop, however, and rain amounts from
Saturday night through Monday night should be in the 2 to 4 inch range.

Colder air spills into the state over the middle part of next week. A little
lingering light rain is possible early Tuesday, but Wednesday and Thursday
should be cool and dry.

THE LONG RANGE: Looks like, generally speaking, temperatures will remain
below normal for the rest of March. It might be mid-April before we see low
80s again.

HODGEPODGE: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was Laredo, Texas with 92
degrees. The mountains of Arizona are expecting 10 to 20 inches of snow this
weekend. Heavy snow is also likely over parts of Utah, Colorado, and
Nebraska from this late season winter storm.

LOT OF RAIN LATE IN WEEKEND: At best, we may see a few sprinkles
tonight, but by the time you happily jump out of bed Friday morning it
should be mostly clear. Mostly sunshine for Friday and a good part of
Saturday. Rain will start at some point Saturday night. However, the most
widespread and significant amounts of rain will come on Sunday and
especially on Monday. We think that some parts of Central Alabama could
receive 2 to 3 inches of rain during that timeframe.

Meanwhile, the old thermometer will have no choice but to hang out
in the 50s and low 60s for the next several days. Sunday will especially not
be very nice with highs only around 53 with brisk east winds and steady rain
at times. We will watch for the possibility of a severe weather risk Monday
and Monday night. A strong low pressure system will be moving NE from East
Texas and crossing Arkansas and West Tennessee by Tuesday morning. The
weather looks better later Tuesday. We still do not see any high
temperatures above the 60s for at least another week.

BALL LIGHTNING: Bill Murray's weather calendar has a story about a
weird event in 1963 on an Eastern Airlines flight from New York to
Washington. Passengers reported seeing an 8-inch glowing sphere that drifted
down the aisle lasting several seconds. It was most likely ball lightning,
which is a rare and still mysterious occurrence. It appears as a glowing
ball of light that can float in the air. Lots of good weather stories in
Bill's publication.

SOME ALABAMA TORNADOES: On this date in 1973, two tornadoes touched
down in my home county of Hale. At 10:30am, one struck two miles west of
Havana totally destroying a large farm complex. A section of lumber was
carried one-mile and driven deep into the ground. One-half hour later,
another one struck at Cedarville in the south part of the county destroying
5 buildings and damaging as many as 50 others. In the community of Prairie
Eden, 5 Y-shaped transmission towers came down. They were built to withstand
200 mph winds.

THREE DOT STUFF: 5 below at Craig, Colorado was the coldest
temperature in our lower 4 dozen states this morning...40 below was the
winner in Alaska at Northway...15 more inches of snow at Alta, Utah in the
last few days bringing their total on the ground to 134 inches...Matt
Marshall in Layton, Utah reports 18 inches at his place in about a week. It
took him 2 hours to commute to Salt Lake, which is a straight shot for 20
miles down I-15...3 above zero was the dew point at Amarillo this afternoon.
That only makes those roaring grass and brushfires in the Panhandle worse.
It is a critical situation.

DID YOU KNOW: that 71% of the earth's surface is covered by water?
Oceans play a huge part in our weather.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have not spent even 30 seconds
playing with my Little Miss Molly so far today. You should see the looks she
gives
me. It is a steady glare. She truly knows when I am shortchanging her. Woe
is me. There is a ton of basketball I want to watch this afternoon and
tonight. Maybe I can coax her into sitting on the couch and watching it with
me...carpet cleaners were here yesterday. We stored all of her toys in a box
and you should have seen the puzzled look on her face. She never fails to
notice. I cannot even go 30 feet to the mailbox without her pressing that
little nose against the front window to keep a check on me. I still love
her. They are innocent little creatures. Someone once said that the reason a
dog has so many friends is that they wag their tail instead of their tongue.
Life goes on and every day is more precious than the day before. Please
enjoy every minute, Molly does.

...Some Clouds, but Not Much Rain...

Clouds will move into Alabama today in advance of a cold front, which will
bring in a fresh supply of cool and dry air tomorrow. We will maintain the
chance of a few sprinkles this evening, but many Alabama communities won't
have enough rain to measure.

Tomorrow should be a sunny day, but a cool day as the mercury struggles to
reach 60 degrees.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: More quick changes for the weekend. Clouds return on
Saturday, and some rain should arrive Saturday night in advance of a strong
storm system over the western half of the nation. Sunday looks like a cool
and wet day statewide with periods of rain, and temperatures only in the low
50s.

Rain and a few thunderstorms are likely on Monday of next week as the main
system approaches. For now, it seems unlikely that we will get in the true
"warm sector" of the storm, so severe weather isn't expected. Rainfall
amounts in the Sunday/Monday time frame should be pretty generous, in the 1
to 3 inch range.

REST OF SPRING BREAK: The weather should be dry and cool on Tuesday and
Wednesday. There is a great deal of uncertainty concerning the weather at
the end of the week; some of the models are suggesting a storm system with a
cold rain; others are simply showing a shot of cold air. One way or another,
don't look for any low 80s around here next week (or at the beach).
Temperatures should be cooler than normal all across the southern U.S.

ROAMING: The warmest spot in the nation yesterday was Fort Myers, FL with
85. Spring "officially" arrives at the vernal equinox, which comes at 12:26
p.m. CST on Monday March 20. This is when the sun is directly over the
equator.

A MIXED BAG OF WEATHER: The weather here in Central Alabama is not
going to stay the same very long at a time for the next several days. This
will include several cloudy periods and rain. Clouds will increase Thursday
and we could see a little bit of light rain Thursday night. A quick clearing
for Friday and clouds right back in the area by Saturday.

OUR MAIN RAIN EVENT: Some rain will reach the area late in the day
Saturday and continue Saturday night. The most widespread and heaviest
amount of rain will come on Sunday and continue Sunday night and Monday. It
is going to be a rather raw day on Sunday with lows in the 40s and highs in
the 50s with brisk easterly winds. Some places may get over 1 inch of rain
during this time period, especially on Sunday and Monday.

Meanwhile, do not look for any more warm 80s anytime soon. The
projection is for highs to not get above the 60s all the way through the
middle of next week.

LAST NIGHT'S CHILL: Heavy frost was reported at several locations
across North Alabama last night. Here is a selection of low temperatures:
25 at Black Creek, heavy frost (NE Etowah County)
27 in Cottondale and at Little River Canyon
28 in Pinson, Ft. Payne, DeSoto State Park
29 in Munford, Talladega, Crossville
30 in Cullman, Leeds, Russellville, Alabaster
31 in Vinemont, Anniston, Helena, Jasper
32 in Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, Wadley
35 at Birmingham Airport

DID YOU KNOW: that the biggest tornado ever known to occur in the
USA was an F4 at Hallam, Nebraska on May 22, 2004. It was nearly 2-1/2 miles
wide.

SCANNING PART OF THE GLOBE: It was 14 this morning atop Mt.
LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains...coldest in the lower 48 was 15 below
at Hallock, Minnesota and the coldest in Alaska 34 below at Northway.
Temperatures have moderated across Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Took a short walk at 5:00 this morning
without Little Miss Molly before the first light of day. The birds were
singing with lots of enthusiasm. Little Miss Molly did not crawl out of bed,
stretching and yawning, until 8:00. Away we went. The birds did not sing to
us. Maybe they were having the bird version of a morning coffee break. We
met Bridgette and her "mom" Lisa a the far end of the walk. Molly and
Bridgette have become good friends. They always spend 30 seconds rubbing
noses and then give each other the all-over sniff test. Bridgette is also a
Shih-tsu. It always makes Molly's day to see another doggy while walking.
Lisa scratched Molly's head this morning and she ate that up. I think Molly
assumes that the whole world should love her and spend time with her. The
whole community loves her and little Miss Molly, along with me and my little
blue scoop, are a familiar site. Life goes on.

...Dry and Cool Again Today...

A nice warm-up is likely for Alabama today. We will begin the day with
temperatures in the low to mid 30s and a blanket of frost in most places,
but by afternoon we should see upper 60s with ample sunshine statewide.

A weak weather system will bring some clouds to the state tomorrow, and
there is chance of scattered light rain tomorrow night as a cold front
passes through. With very limited moisture, amounts should be under a
quarter of an inch.

On Friday the sky becomes partly sunny as a fresh supply of cool and dry air
moves in.

THE WEEKEND: At this point Saturday looks cool and dry, but rain will return
on Sunday as a warm front moves northward through Alabama. Sunday could be a
cool day for the northern half of the state, with temperatures holding in
the 50s north of the warm front.

Monday of next week, there is a chance that we could get in the warm sector
of the developing storm system. If that happens, we might have the risk of
strong to severe thunderstorms. One way or another, the beginning of spring
break week looks wet all across the Deep South.

The rest of next week will feature below normal temperatures across much of
the eastern and southern U.S. I doubt if we see 80s again until sometime in
April.

RAIN UPDATE: The rain total for the year at the Birmingham International
Airport is now 16.60", which is 4.24" above normal.

ROAMING: Warmest spots in the nation yesterday were all in Florida;
Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, Stuart, and West Palm Beach all reached 88
degrees. The coming weekend looks wet for Phoenix, and it should be their
second rain event in 7 days after 143 days with no rain.

FROM THE 80s TO FROST: 'Tis the season for rapid weather changes.
March is always one of the most interesting months of the year for weather
humans. So, we go from 80s Monday afternoon to scattered frost tonight.
Yesterday Brewton shared the honor of being the warmest spot in the USA with
a high of 88. By daybreak, we would not be surprised to hear of temperatures
as low as 28 to 30 in places like Hamilton and Valley Head. With clear skies
tonight and low dew points and the wind expected to die down, scattered
frost should form, mainly in the valleys, after midnight.

Temperatures will recover quickly to the mid and upper 60s
Wednesday. Our next rain will be a slight chance late Thursday into early
Friday. The amount should be rather light.

ALL THOSE STORMS: They created a tense time yesterday afternoon and
last evening. There were several tornadoes reported and even photographed.
We will await storm survey reports from the National Weather Service.

LUNAR ECLIPSE TONIGHT: It is called a penumbra lunar eclipse. It is
not as dramatic as a total eclipse, but we will easily be able to see it
here in Alabama as a pale shadow will already be darkening the moon's
southern hemisphere at moonrise. It will reach it's maximum between 5:18pm
and 6:18pm.

DID YOU KNOW: that approximately 1,800 thunderstorms are in
progress at any given moment on the earth and that lightning strikes about
100 times each second?

HOPPING AROUND THE COUNTRY: 88 was the hottest yesterday in Ft.
Myers, Stateboro, Georgia, Stafford and Culpepper, Virginia and Brewton,
Alabama...coldest this morning was 16 below in Yellowstone National Park in
the canyon area...it was 14 below at Hohnholz Ranch in Northern
Colorado...we get daily high and low reports and snow depths from 11
locations in Yellowstone Park. This morning there was 34 inches of snow on
the ground at Old Faithful and 66 inches at Snake River...there is 126
inches of snow on the ground at Alta, Utah, a ski area in the Wasatch
Mountains...40 below was the coldest in Alaska this morning at Chandalar
Lake...it was 2 above zero in Birmingham 13 years ago this morning-the
aftermath of the Blizzard of '93...we have posted an in-depth story about
that great storm on the 33/40 BLOG.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: My little pal embarrassed me last
night. She came racing into my weather office with a ball in her mouth and
barked loudly demanding some playtime. Only thing-I was in the middle of a
3-hour wall-to-wall radio broadcast on four Cox Radio stations in
Birmingham. So, Molly was heard all the way from West Georgia to East
Mississippi. My wife quickly scooped her up and evicted her. Great walk this
morning and we enjoyed the brisk atmosphere...partway up the walk, a
mockingbird strolled across with a nice twig in her mouth. She saw Molly,
dropped the twig and flew into the hedgerow. I looked back over my shoulder
and she came out of hiding and retrieved the twig. I'm glad she did-it
looked like an excellent piece of "lumber" for nest building...the Old Crow
Creek was flowing nicely after 1.45 inches of rain yesterday. Yesterday the
birds were singing like the Grand Old Opry.

This morning they sounded much softer and reminded me of Glenn
Miller's Moonlight Serenade. There is so much to see and hear in nature-you
just need to look for it. Life goes on and I am so thankful for every day.
And for Little Miss Molly!
