...Keeping An Eye on Charley...

GOOD MORNING! It seems that the weekend forecast headline is becoming a
fill in the blank. Keeping an Eye on _______. Just insert Charley, or
Frances or Ivan. Or Jeanne, or Lisa, or Karl, or maybe Matthew or Nicole.

FIRST, ABOUT IVAN: Ivan is an extremely dangerous hurricane. It passed
along the south coast of Jamaica during the night. Ivan strengthened to top
winds of 150 mph in the hours before approaching the island. If it loses
any steam while encountering the high terrain of the island, it should be
quickly regained over the warm waters between Jamaica and the Caymans today.
Ivan will pass the Cayman Islands tonight and cross Cuba late on Sunday.
Ivan will threaten the Sunshine State early in the week, passing over or
near the Florida keys on Monday. Then the track is a little uncertain.
Some model solutions carry the system up the west coast of the state to a
varying degree. Others take the storm across the peninsula and emerge it
over the Atlantic to head for South Carolina. There is still a chance the
storm could head for the central Gulf. No doubt it will be a major hurricane
wherever it goes.

OUR WEATHER: Today will feature lots of sunshine and just a few clouds. A
frontal system to our southeast separates drier air over us from tropical
air to the south. This frontal system may come back our way, bringing us a
chance of showers Sunday and Monday. By Tuesday, our weather may come under
the influence of the circulation of Ivan. The storm is expected to pass to
our east, keeping us on the drier side of the system. But we will see a
chance of showers in eastern sections and more breezy conditions.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Sunny and hot for AU at MSU. Gametime temperatures in
the upper 80s, rising to near 92. Clear and comfortable for Ole Miss at
Bama. 82 at kickoff, falling into the 70s during the game. Winds will be
light.

REMEBERING FREDERIC: On this date twenty five years ago, Alabamians were
closely monitoring Hurricane Frederic in the Gulf of Mexico. More in
Weather Talk.

...A Dry Weekend; Still Watching Ivan...

A very nice weekend ahead for Alabama with sunny warm days and clear
pleasant nights. For tomorrow night's Alabama/Ole Miss game in Tuscaloosa, a
clear sky with about 76 degrees for the 8:00 p.m. kickoff. Auburn travels to
Starkville to play Mississippi State. Lots of sunshine for the 11:30 a.m.
game with a kickoff temperature near 84 degrees, rising to near 90 by the
fourth quarter.

BIG BAD IVAN: The hurricane will rake Jamaica late today with winds
of 150 mph, gusting to almost 175. The general track takes Ivan from Jamaica
to the Grand Cayman Islands tomorrow, and then across Cuba Sunday, and into
the southeast Gulf of Mexico on Monday.

Ivan will be dangerously close to the west coast of Florida on
Monday and Tuesday. Some computer models suggest Ivan will turn into the
Florida peninsula, while others keep it in the Gulf, with a possible
landfall over the eastern Florida panhandle. The good news is that it is
unlikely that Ivan will be a category five storm at landfall on the U.S.
coast, but it still should be a major hurricane that will require many
evacuations and disrupt life for thousands.

All interests along the U.S. coast from New Orleans to Boston will
need to watch Ivan very, very closely through the weekend.

THE ALABAMA EFFECT: For now, we are going under the assumption that
Ivan will remain to the east of Alabama, and we are leaving our forecast dry
through the middle of next week. However, should Ivan make landfall at some
point from Apalachicola on west, we could be dealing with rain and wind by
Wednesday of next week. As always, the heaviest rain and greatest chance of
spin-off tornadoes will be along and to the east of the storm center.

NICE WEATHER THROUGH WEEKEND: How about those pleasant temperatures when
you walked out to grab the paper this morning? Let's celebrate a few of
those before we get down to more serious business:

59 in Cullman
61 in Pinson
63 in Fayette, Jasper, Heflin, Birmingham, Anniston.

Our weather looks great through the weekend. Please refer to our day-by-day
forecast for details.

POWERHOUSE IVAN AND ALABAMA: During the next few days, you're going to see
all kinds of forecasts on where Hurricane Ivan will make landfall in the
USA. Please, please remember that such a forecast more than a couple of days
out is subject to considerable error. The latest thinking is that Ivan will
curve northward, crossing the western part of Cuba Sunday night, then across
the western part of the Florida Keys early Monday, and then making another
landfall on the SW coast of Florida. Punta Gorda. If that track holds true,
most of Alabama would not get any real adverse weather. However, if the
track were to shift further westward, we could be affected later Tuesday.

Hurricane Ivan is a powerful and extremely dangerous Category 5 hurricane
with sustained winds around 160 MPH and gusts close to 200. He appears to be
heading straight for Jamaica, an island of 4,200 square miles and one-tenth
the size of Cuba. If he makes direct landfall there, the damage will be
catastrophic. There are some indications he should weaken a bit after
curving northward to threaten Florida, but we will have to wait and see.

If he makes landfall in Florida, it will be unprecedented. I believe it's
true that two Category 4 or stronger hurricanes have never crossed the U.S.
coastline in one season. Ivan is also among the strongest hurricanes ever to
occur in the Atlantic Basin.

THURSDAY NOTES: Finally, the lingering effects of Tropical Depression
Frances are diminishing. She has been a real thorn in the side of millions
of folks...she dumped 6.40 inches of rain at White Plains, New York and 4.06
inches in the Big Apple...in Western North Carolina, officials report some
of the worst flooding in history around Asheville and the city water supply
was crippled...some good cold temperatures up in Alaska. It was 15 this
morning in Dry Creek, 18 in Fort Yukon and 20 at Eagle.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Oh, boy, having to shun little Miss Molly some
more because of work, but she is not letting it escape her attention. Her
newest thing is to come in my office, park her little paws on the side of my
leg, look at me with those big eyes and wag her tail wanting me to place her
on my desk. She loves to sit here and look out the window. She is wagging
her tail as I type this, sort of sweeping off my keyboard. About every-other
paragraph, I pause for a moment and hug her neck. When the last hurricane
advisory came off the printer, she started chewing on that. Life goes on.

THE LULL BETWEEN STORMS: It's goodbye to Frances and she sure caused
problems over a wide area. The fragmentary center of Frances was astride the
Tennessee-North Carolina border this afternoon NE of Knoxville. She is still
producing way too much rain and significant flooding was underway this
afternoon in the western North Carolina mountains, including major mud
slides. The sun has come out over all but extreme east and NE Alabama and it
will gradually clear in that area tonight.

The low clouds draped across most of the state from Frances held
temperatures down yesterday. It got no higher than 69 at DeSoto State Park
where they had 1.21 inches of rain. A few other rain totals included 2.23
inches at Flat Rock (Jackson County) and 2.05 at Russell Cave.

Now we are in for some very pleasant weather all the way through the
weekend-lots of sunshine and lower daytime humidity through Saturday. Cooler
nights will bring temperatures as low as the low and mid 60s. We could see
upper 50s in the North Alabama valleys Friday morning.

HURRICANE IVAN: He is truly a big bully and he continues westward at a good
clip with sustained winds of 140 MPH, making him a very dangerous Category 4
hurricane. The National Hurricane Center thinks he will eventually have 150
MPH sustained winds with gusts over 180. We hate to keep saying this, but we
must insist, that a track forecast 4 or 5 days ahead can contain major
errors. However, the guys down at the Hurricane Center (where President Bush
is visiting this afternoon), think that Ivan could cross Western Cuba Sunday
morning and enter the Gulf of Mexico and curve northward off the west coast
of Florida Monday. Here in the weather office, we will go back to playing
the old WW (Watch and Wait) game.

WEDNESDAY NOTES: Almost 10 inches of rain in the last 24 hours at Brevard,
North Carolina with 8.20 at Beech Mountain and 8 inches at Mt.
Mitchell...how about this? The temperature dropped to 9 this morning at
Chandalar Lake, Alaska with the wind chill below zero. Another hint of the
changing season...unfortunately the heat index in a wide area of Florida was
around 105 this afternoon and a lot of that area still has no power or air
conditioning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: This is unbelievable, but little Miss Molly
slept until almost 11 this morning. I even got 10 hours of sleep overnight,
which breaks the record for September 7-8 that had stood since I was six
months old. Molly and I have decided that we have been suffering from HH
(Hurricane Hangover). It has been said that if a man bonds with his little
dog, that his life will be a whole lot calmer and satisfying. I don't see
how I could bond any closer with Molly. I hope I can continue to be the kind
of person my dog thinks I am. I don't ever get upset or stressed, but even
if I did, I know Miss Molly could bring me back down to earth in just a few
seconds. I only wish I could learn to wag my tail like she does. That would
make great video! Life goes on.

...A Few Stray Showers...

Tropical depression Frances is moving away from Alabama this morning, slowly
losing her grip on the state. We will maintain the chance of a few stray
showers around here this morning, but drier air begins to arrive this
afternoon, and we are expecting delightful weather for the state tomorrow,
Friday, and through the weekend. Daytime humidity values will be relatively
low, nights will be pleasant, and each day should feature a good supply of
sunshine. Needless to say, a great football weekend ahead.

EYE ON IVAN: This very dangerous hurricane is one to watch. Sustained winds
last night increased to 135 mph, making Ivan a dangerous category four
storm. The system is moving through the southern Caribbean, and is forecast
to be somewhere close to Cuba by the beginning of the weekend. The longer
range computer models are showing a more northward component of motion over
the weekend, which means Ivan could threaten south Florida by Sunday or
Monday. Keep in mind Ivan could turn northeast into the Atlantic before
reaching south Florida, OR progress into the Gulf of Mexico. The most likely
solution on Ivan is a track that keeps it east of Alabama, but we are not
totally sure the weakness in the ridge north of the system will be enough to
turn it northward. We will need to watch this one very closely.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: While many west Alabama communities did not see a single
drop of rain from Frances, central and east Alabama was wet. Rain totals
yesterday included: 1.79" at Greystone Farms in northern Shelby county,
1.70" in downtown Anniston, 1.43" at Jacksonville, 1.42" at Riverchase,
1.41" at Black Creek near Gadsden, and 1.19"in downtown Gadsden.

FRANCES DRENCHING A LOT OF PEOPLE: It would be interesting if we could
weigh the amount of rain that has fallen on Florida, Georgia, Alabama and
the Carolinas from Miss Frances. It would astound you the number of tons.

Today people from North Florida through Georgia and the Carolinas are
getting the worst of Frances even though she has been downgraded to a
tropical depression. At Patterson in South Georgia, 11.02 inches of rain
fell in the last 24 hours and 10.50 inches at High Springs, Florida.
You don't need good eyesight to know that Frances has affected Alabama
today. As we mentioned many times, the worst weather occurs near the center
and on the east side of a tropical hurricane or depression. This afternoon
the center of Frances seemed to be in extreme West Georgia north of
Columbus. Movement was slowly toward the NNE. We will still get some more
rain tonight-mostly from I-65 eastward, but showers will wind down tomorrow
morning as drier air circulates in from the NW. Look for mostly sunshine
from Thursday through the weekend with cooler nights. A number of trees were
uprooted in East-Central Alabama last night and today. Numerous trees and
power lines were down in Chambers County. At Wetumpka in Elmore County, one
person was injured when a tree landed on a vehicle.

There has been very little rainfall over West Alabama today, but a number of
places over the east half of the state received over an inch. One of the
heavier amounts in the Birmingham area was 1.42 inches at Greystone Cove in
North Shelby County. Trussville had over an inch.

SHORT NOTES: We will do this with incomplete sentences to pack in as much
information as we can-hope you don't mind...several tornadoes sighted in
South Carolina this morning...several tornado warnings in that area and also
around Ocala, Florida...numerous flash flood warnings in North Florida and
Georgia...every county in Georgia under a flood watch except for about
five...USA low this morning was 26 in Stanley, Idaho.

EYE ON IVAN: He could become the strongest hurricane so far this season. He
has grown stronger this afternoon with sustained winds near 120 MPH with
higher gusts and is expected to grow stronger in the next 24 hours. We won't
be able to take an eye off of Ivan, because he is expected to move through
the Caribbean and possibly get into the Gulf of Mexico late in the weekend.
You can bet Floridians are keeping an anxious eye.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly had some visitors last
night. A young couple, and good friends, Keith and Randi, came by. They did
not come to see us, instead they wanted to meet little Miss Molly. They are
faithful readers of "My Tiny Corner." You can bet Molly filled the bill. All
three of them had an hour long play session and Molly enjoyed it to the
fullest. She was pooped when they left and immediately collapsed on her
blanket. They did me a great favor, because I had to ignore Molly most of
the day and she misses her play sessions more than anything. I will have buy
Molly a new toy to make up to her when all this hurricane work finally slows
down. Life goes on with the help of visitors.

...Lots of Wind; Not Much Rain...

Most of Alabama will remain on the "dry" west wide of the large circulation
of tropical storm Frances today. We will have occasional showers, but
rainfall amounts for Birmingham should be under one-half inch. Over in west
Alabama, places like Tuscaloosa, Fayette, and Demopolis will barely have
enough rain to wet the pavement. The greatest rain totals should be over
near the Georgia border where around one inch is possible. The big rain
totals will be well to the east over parts of Georgia and South Carolina.

As the circulation center of Frances moves northward through Georgia, north
winds will be in the 15 to 30 mph range, with the higher gusts over the far
eastern counties of Alabama. We do not expect any significant problems with
tree or power line damage. So. all eyes turn to:

IVAN: The hurricane in the Atlantic is forecast to be along the northern
coast of Cuba by Saturday afternoon, perhaps in a position to enter the Gulf
of Mexico. Sustained winds are now in the 105 mph range, but the system is
forecast to become a major hurricane by the time it reaches the Lesser
Antilles.

And, if all of this is not enough, another strong tropical wave in the
eastern Atlantic has the potential to become tropical storm Jose over the
next few days as it moves westward.

WEEKEND PEEK: Much drier air returns to Alabama by tomorrow night, and we
expect sunny days and clear nights through Saturday. Humidity values will be
low, and nights will be pleasantly cool for early September. Looks like an
ideal football weekend.

WET PORT CITY: Mobile measured 35.50" of rain during June, July, and August,
making it the second wettest summer on record.

DON'T MESS WITH FRANCES: We have heard the old saying, "Don't mess with
Texas." Shall we add Frances also, because she has been a real headache.
Fortunately, the weather was slowly improving over the worst damaged areas
of Central and South Florida, but it was still very windy in extreme North
Florida including places like Tallahassee and Jacksonville. Frances moved
ashore at midday-her second landfall-in the vicinity of St. Marks in NW
Florida and now it is our turn to deal with her.

The National Hurricane Center track forecast has been pretty much on the
money all along. They now project for Frances to move up across extreme
East Alabama near Dothan, Auburn and Heflin during the day tomorrow and then
across extreme NW Georgia and the eastern parts of Tennessee and Kentucky on
Wednesday. All of this time she will be a tropical depression.

Let's get down to the nitty-gritty. What does all of this mean for Central
Alabama? There are strong indications that the heaviest rain will stay over
on the east side of the state closer to the Georgia border. We think
rainfall in the greater Birmingham area will probably be less than one inch
and even more sparse in the Tuscaloosa area. It's going to become quite
windy, but we don't believe the winds will be strong enough for any
significant tree damage unless it's near the Georgia border. Even today,
northerly winds have been gusting as high as 35 mph across Central and East
Alabama. For tonight and tomorrow, the winds will be ranging generally
between 15 and 30 mph.

The showers should diminish on Wednesday probably early in the day. Brisk NW
winds will be bring some good drying and cooler nighttime temperatures. We
think all sunshine Thursday and Friday with lower humidity and cooler
nights.

ANOTHER HURRICANE TO WATCH: And, he's already a strong one. His name is
Ivan. He will be getting into the Eastern Caribbean early tomorrow. The
long-range outlook is for him to pass between Cuba and the Bahamas and by
this weekend be pointed generally toward South Florida. Way, way too early
to be specific yet, but he sure needs to be watched.

MONDAY NOTES: Virtually the whole state of Florida has been completely wet
down by Frances...surely some areas received 12-20 inches...24 degrees in
Stanley, Idaho this morning and some of the higher mountains of Central
Colorado, including Loveland Pass west of Denver, have been whitened by
snow!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: One of the most enjoyable walks ever with Miss
Molly early this morning. A brisk wind was blowing and when we paused for 10
minutes in the shadow of the Old Crow Motel, it felt almost sweater-ish.
Molly looked so cute with her hair blowing in the wind and she was
constantly sniffing. I believe she could smell a papermill 50 miles away.
Life goes on hurricane or no hurricane.

...Frances To Impact Alabama...

FRANCES: Frances moved over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico overnight,
heading northwest toward the Apalachicola area of Northwest Florida. The
expected track of the storm carries it up the Alabama/Georgia border over
the next forty eight hours before it starts to curve to the northeast.
Frances will have a significant impact on Alabama weather as it moves
northward. Breaking it down:

WIND: Frances is a very large system. Strong winds have buffeted
southeastern sections with the initial feed bands. An Inland Tropical Storm
Warning is in effect for the Southeast corner of Alabama where winds will
reach 40 mph or higher with gusts to 60 mph.

A High Wind Watch will go into effect at noon in an area roughly from Phenix
