...A Few Stray Showers...

Tropical depression Frances is moving away from Alabama this morning, slowly
losing her grip on the state. We will maintain the chance of a few stray
showers around here this morning, but drier air begins to arrive this
afternoon, and we are expecting delightful weather for the state tomorrow,
Friday, and through the weekend. Daytime humidity values will be relatively
low, nights will be pleasant, and each day should feature a good supply of
sunshine. Needless to say, a great football weekend ahead.

EYE ON IVAN: This very dangerous hurricane is one to watch. Sustained winds
last night increased to 135 mph, making Ivan a dangerous category four
storm. The system is moving through the southern Caribbean, and is forecast
to be somewhere close to Cuba by the beginning of the weekend. The longer
range computer models are showing a more northward component of motion over
the weekend, which means Ivan could threaten south Florida by Sunday or
Monday. Keep in mind Ivan could turn northeast into the Atlantic before
reaching south Florida, OR progress into the Gulf of Mexico. The most likely
solution on Ivan is a track that keeps it east of Alabama, but we are not
totally sure the weakness in the ridge north of the system will be enough to
turn it northward. We will need to watch this one very closely.

YESTERDAY'S RAIN: While many west Alabama communities did not see a single
drop of rain from Frances, central and east Alabama was wet. Rain totals
yesterday included: 1.79" at Greystone Farms in northern Shelby county,
1.70" in downtown Anniston, 1.43" at Jacksonville, 1.42" at Riverchase,
1.41" at Black Creek near Gadsden, and 1.19"in downtown Gadsden.
