...Two Weeks Dry...

Today marks the thirteenth straight day without rain at the Birmingham
Airport. Dry weather is a staple of October in Central Alabama, but
it came early this year. Without Tropical Storm Fay in late August,
Birmingham's rainfall deficit would be getting significant. Other
Central Alabama locations do have some sizeable deficits for the year.

DEFICIT UPDATE: Birmingham is sort of an anomaly right now, since we
actually have a surplus in the rainfall department. And again, that
is because of Fay. Elsewhere across North and Central Alabama, other
locations are not so lucky. Anniston is 2.25 inches in the hole.
Montgomery is 3.26 inches down for the year. Tuscaloosa is down 10.33
inches. And Huntsville is down a whopping 13.76 inches.

OUR FORECAST: Things are looking like they might be coming together
for a decent rain and thunderstorm event by midweek here in Alabama.
The timing is a bit uncertain, with the models flip flopping between
last night and this morning. One run says Wednesday for best rain
chances, next run says Thursday. With an upper low, bet on the
latter, so rain we may have to slide those chances back a bit in later
forecasts. For now, we will call for rain and storms beginning late
Tuesday night into Wednesday. Some of the storms could be strong.
Dry weather will follow the front, but look for another storm system
late in the weekend.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is still quiet for the time being.
There is an area of low pressure over the western Caribbean that is
drifting into the Yucatan Peninsula. It is expected to move little
through the rest of the weekend. Upper level winds are not favourable
for development. There are signs that the rest of October will be
active in the tropical department. The CSU team predicts there will
be three named storms between now and the end of October.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Four inches of snow or more are expected Saturday
night into Sunday in the elevations above 8,000 feet over the San
Juan Mountains of south-western Colorado. One of my favorite places
is Telluride, nestled in a box canyon, surrounded on three sides by
towering 14,000 foot peaks. They are expecting two inches of snow
over the weekend in the picturesque town.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: In November 1868, a Lieutenant Stephen Saxby
of the British Navy made an amazing long range forecast. He wrote a
London newspaper, predicting that a storm of unusual violence would be
accompanied by an extremely high tide on the October 5th of the
following year. Then without the benefit of long range computer
models or satellites, a resident of Nova Scotia wrote his local
newspaper, referring to Saxby's prediction, warning that a severe
storm would strike on the 4th or 5th in Halifax. The storm did strike
Halifax on the night of the 4th, but was not especially severe.
However, in nearby New Brunswick, the storm caused winds of hurricane
force, extreme flooding and severe damage. The storm reached its peak
at about 9pm on the 4th. But this was actually after midnight in
London, meaning that Saxby's forecast was eerilly correct.

...Welcome Race Fans!...

Yesterday was the twelfth straight day without
measurable rain in Birmingham. We have only had one day with more
than one quarter inch of rain since Fay brought us over six inches of
rain over a three day period in late August. So, we could really use
some rain here in Central Alabama. Finally, some is in the forecast.

OUR FORECAST: The weekend will be warm and dry with a
good supply of sunshine. Highs will be in the 80s and lows in the
50s. By Monday, a storm system will begin to take shape to the west
of Alabama. Low pressure over Oklahoma will be supported by a very
strong early season upper level system. Severe weather will be likely
to the west of Alabama. We should see increasing clouds on Tuesday as
the system progresses to the east. It looks like a few showers will
edge into Alabama Tuesday night. By Wednesday, showers and storms
will be likely. We are getting into our secondary severe weather
season and some strong storms are possible. The system will be a slow
mover, and rain could be with us through the end of the week.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama entertains the Kentucky
Wildcats at 2:30 p.m. in Bryant Denny Stadium. Still missing: those
great old hot dogs. But that will affect the fans, not the teams.
The weather will have little impact. Sunny with a kickoff temperature
around 84, falling back into the 70s by the end of the game. Even
better weather in Nashville as Auburn travels to take on Vandy. Clear
at the 5 p.m. kickoff with a temperature in the upper 70s, falling
into the 60s during the game.

RACE WEATHER: Warm, sunny days all weekend at the
Superspeedway. Highs between 81-85. Comfortable overnight lows in
the 50s. Perfect weather for race fans from all over the world.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is quiet for now. But
the Colorado State team predicts that we will still see above normal
activity this month. Phil Klotzbach and Bill Gray are calling for
three named storms this month, two of which will become hurricanes.
One of them will go onto to attain major hurricane status. They
attribute the expected increase to warmer than normal sea surface
temperatures and lower than normal pressures across the basin. One
parameter, called the Madden Julian Oscillation, is going to pulse up
over the Gulf, Caribbean and Atlantic around the middle of the month.
The last pulse produced the wave of activity in late August and
September. With high pressure expected to build over the Northeast,
this could be the recipe for a landfalling U.S. system later in the
month.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora spent 11 days in
October 1963 wreaking havoc along her path through the Caribbean. The
storm brought 170 mph winds and an 11 foot storm surge to Haiti,
killing 5000 people, making it the island nation's most destructive
hurricane. The slow moving storm would also bring 3 days of
torrential rainfalls of 15-20 inches to Cuba. The floods and
attendant mudslides kill 1300 people in that island nation. Castro
would refuse the United States offers of help.

...Calm And Collected Weekend...

THERMOMETER EDGING UPWARD: Not much going on around Alabama this
weekend and even well into early next week. The old thermometer will
be crawling upward a bit starting tomorrow. After that, it will relax
in the mid 80s for a high and pleasantly cool temperatures at night
mostly in the mid and upper 50s. The forest fire danger remains high
and we still need rain, but this weekend will be ideal for anything
you want to do outdoors.

DROUGHT SITUATION: The Birmingham area had only 0.40 rain in
September—the sixth driest September. The USA drought monitor has
placed Alabama back into a 93% drought area. The most impacted areas
are in NE Alabama.
This is no way near as serious as the one a year ago. Most communities
have received about twice as much rain so far in 2008 than
they had at this same time in 2007.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Virtually nothing going on in the vast Atlantic
Basin, which includes not only the Atlantic, but also the Caribbean
and our dear friend the Gulf of Mexico. However, there is a broad area
of low pressure over the NW Caribbean. It is producing mostly clouds
and showers, but conditions are not favourable for it to develop and
it was moving very little. Well respected hurricane researchers at
Colorado State University, headed by Dr. William Gray, in their
updated forecast are calling for three more named storms during
October, including the possibility of one major hurricane.

FOOTBALL AND RACE WEATHER: Perfection describes the weather for
tonight's high school games with temperatures around the 7:30 kick off
in the 60s and cooling to the upper 50s in the 4th quarter. On
Saturday, Trinity University from San Antonio will be at Birmingham's
Regions Park for a noon kick off with Birmingham Southern. The warmest
temperature during the game should be around 84. Kentucky will be in
Tuscaloosa to play Alabama in a 2:30 kick off on CBS. About 85 degrees
at kick off and in the 70s in the 4th quarter. At 5:00 p.m., there
will be a kick off in Nashville where Vanderbilt meets Auburn on ESPN.
Clear weather expected with 78 at kick off and 62 at the final
whistle. This is a major NASCAR race weekend at Talladega. Clear, dry
weather is expected with highs around 85 and lows 55 to 60. Since
there will be so much sun it will feel rather warm in the infield and
in the stands during the afternoons.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: 21 at International Falls and Waskish,
Minnesota—the cold spots this morning and 10 Anaktuvuk Pass,
Antarctica.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: The sun was barely up when Little Miss
Molly forced me outdoors for a half-mile walk this morning. A patch of
clouds at about 6,000 feet made the sunrise more dramatic, especially
backlighting the Old Crow Motel. We were only a short distance up the
track when Dino, the little Yorkie, came out of his back door and met
Molly halfway up the embankment.

They kissed and sniffed for a while. Molly dearly wants to marry him,
but he is too young. A bit further up the track, the big black dog,
with the crooked tail that is always pointing toward Anniston, came
out of the hedgerow. He and Molly went round and round. The Old Crow
Creek is as dry as the dry wash I used to sit in in the Arizona desert
near Sedona waiting for a roadrunner to come by that I could
photograph. Never was successful even though I had my shutter speed at
1/1000ths of a second. He would come flying by going faster than the
space shuttle. I just have to take a short drive up Washington Valley
this weekend to check on autumn color and possibly use my new digital
camera for the third time since it was given to me last Christmas. It
is hard to break the habit, since I have literally thousands of
photographs from regular film.

...Warmer Afternoons Ahead...

A WEEKEND WARMING TREND: Afternoons will turn warmer over the weekend,
but nights and early mornings will remain pleasantly cool as a dry
airmass remains in place. We are forecasting a high around 80 today,
with low to mid 80s tomorrow and Sunday. Early morning lows over the
weekend will be in the 50s.

The weather still looks mostly dry next week, although a few isolated
showers could show up by Tuesday or Wednesday, mainly over the
western third of the state. Highs next week will remain in the 80 to
85 degree range, slightly above average values for early October.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for the high school games
tonight. Comfortable temperatures in the 60s at kick off and in the
50s in the second half. Kentucky will be in Tuscaloosa to play Alabama
for a 2:30 kick off tomorrow (CBS-TV). We expect sunny weather with
about 84 at kick off and in the 70s in the 4th quarter. Auburn will be
in Nashville to play Vanderbilt with a 5:00 p.m. kick off on ESPN.
Clear with 78 at kick off and in the 60s in the fourth quarter.
Trinity University from San Antonio plays Birmingham Southern at noon
Saturday in Regions Park. High temperature during the game about 83.
Great story about Trinity in the Birmingham News sports section this
morning. And, Jacksonville State will host Southeast Missouri State at
Paul Snow stadium tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. The sky will be clear
with temperatures falling from near 79 at kickoff, to the upper 60s by
the fourth quarter.

RACING WEATHER: Yep, it is race weekend at Talladega. The sky will be
mostly sunny around the Superspeedway tomorrow and Sunday, with
afternoon highs in the 81 to 85 degree range. Nights will remain
pleasantly cool.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Disturbed weather remains over the Northwest
Caribbean, but upper air winds are rather harsh, and tropical storm
formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through the weekend.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: Tampa area is struck by several tornadoes,
caused by a low pressure system moving out of the Gulf of Mexico. One
F3 tornado struck Pinellas Park, where 75 people were injured and 3
killed. The storm also brought high tides of 4-5 feet to the west
coast of Florida. Heavy rains plagued north Florida and southern
Georgia. 10.14 inches fells at Brunswick GA and 8.69 inches at
Jacksonville FL. Major beach erosion occurred along the Hillsborough
County coast and at Egmont Key. Total damage was $32 million.

DRY DAYS: Today will be the 12th day in a row with no measurable rain
for Birmingham; and we are coming off the 7th driest September on
record (only 0.40" for the month). The average rain for the month of
October is 3.23", and it is the driest month of the year. The prospect
of a major rain event does not look good for the next 7 to 10 days.

...Gradual Warming By Weekend...

NO COMPLAINTS ABOUT TEMPERATURE: A High Forest Fire Danger continues,
otherwise great weather. This was the coolest morning since last
spring over most of Alabama and would you believe the first report of
some frost. Mind you, the frost did not amount to much. It was
reported at Grantley in NE Alabama's Cleburne County. The observer
reported only a little light frost scattered in low areas and on a few
rooftops. That community also recorded the lowest temperature in the
state with 37. Most of the lows across Alabama were in the 40s and
some 50s. We have a long list posted on the 33/40 Weather Blog, but
here is a quick look at the five coolest:

37 Grantley
39 Broomtown
40 Scrougout
41 Lafayette, Remlap, Crossville
42 Russellville, Ashland, Munford, Valley Head

There were some scattered clouds over North Alabama during the night
and part of today. Actually, there was a small low-pressure area over
North Mississippi. That will tend to disappear and we should have
mostly sunshine through Sunday with some cloudiness returning on
Monday. We think most communities will be free of showers into early
next week. High temperatures will moderate to the mid 80s across
Central Alabama over the weekend.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Excellent weather for the high school games tonight
and Friday night. Comfortable temperatures in the 60s at kick off and
in the 50s in the second half. Same story for college football
tonight, as Memphis comes to UAB (TV-CBS CSN). Kentucky will be in
Tuscaloosa to play Alabama for a 2:30 kick off Saturday (CBS-TV). We
expect sunny weather with about 84 at kick off and in the 70s in the
4th quarter. Auburn will be in Nashville to play Vanderbilt with a
5:00 p.m. kick off on ESPN. Clear with 78 at kick off and in the 60s
in the fourth quarter. Trinity University from San Antonio plays
Birmingham Southern at noon Saturday in Regions Park. High temperature
during the game about 83. Great story about Trinity in the Birmingham
News sports section this morning.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: For a change we do not have to talk about tropical
weather. The only storm is out in the Pacific. Satellite photographs
show that almost ½ of Alaska now has a snow cover and also about ½ of
the Yukon Territory in NW Canada…cold temperatures this morning
included 28 at Stanley, Idaho nestled in the Sawtooth Mountains and 7
above zero at Arctic Village, Alaska…there was a freeze in the higher
elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains this morning with a low of 26
on Mt. LeConte.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Since I have taken over Molly walking,
it would be my luck to get forced out way before daybreak this morning
for a short walk. Later this morning, we went all the way. Halfway up
the track, a large black dog with a crooked tail that once wet my
pants leg and socks, came out of the hedgerow without his electronic
collar. It startled my Little Miss Molly and me, but she recovered and
actually rubbed noses with the big guy. For some reason, halfway
through the greeting they both got spooked with each other and
exploded in opposite directions. I almost got whiplash. Near the Old
Crow Motel we heard one of our old friends, an old crow, cawing for
the first time in months. That sure made the morning walk more
enjoyable. Life goes on.

FABULOUS FALL WEATHER: Doesn't get much better than this; a
brilliantly sunny sky today with low humidity, excellent visibility,
and a gentle north breeze. Our high today will be in the mid 70s,
about five degrees below average values for early October in Alabama.
And, temperatures will drop quickly once the sun goes down this
evening; we will wind up in the upper 40s early tomorrow.

THE WEEKEND AND BEYOND: Dry weather continues through the weekend and
into early next week with a slow warming trend. Looks like we will be
in the low to mid 80s over the weekend, with early morning lows in the
50s. A few scattered clouds could show up early next week, but at this
point it looks like dry weather will continue through much of the week.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: UAB will host Memphis tonight at Legion Field (7:00
kickoff on CBSC); it will be superb night for the game with clear sky
and temperatures in the 60s at kickoff, falling into the 50s by
halftime. Pretty much the same storm for high school football games
tonight and tomorrow night; the sky will be clear with temperatures
falling through the 60s, reaching the 50s by the second half. A light
jacket or sweater will be appropriate.

On Saturday, Alabama will host Kentucky at Bryant-Denny Stadium (2:30
kickoff on CBS); the sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature of
83 degrees, falling into the 70s by the fourth quarter. Auburn will be
on the road; they play Vanderbilt in Nashville (5:00 kickoff on ESPN).
The sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from near 78 at
kickoff into the 60s by the fourth quarter.

TALLADEGA WEATHER: A great race weekend is ahead with sunny warm days
and clear cool nights. Highs around the Superspeedway will range from
81 to 84 on Saturday and Sunday, and there is no risk of rain.

HIGH FIRE DANGER: Due to the very dry conditions and low humidity, the
forest fire danger will remain very high across our state at least for
the next five days; be very careful if you are doing any outdoor
burning.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet, and tropical storm formation is
not expected through the weekend. Hurricane season will continue until
the last day of November.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Hurricane Flora moves across the south coast of
Haiti and then meanders across eastern Cuba for the next five days,
lashing the island with winds of 100 mph or more for 100 hours or
more. Rainfall amounts were astronomical, with as much as 90 inches
being reported near Velasco. More rain was reported at Guantanamo Bay
from Flora than was reported during the entire year of 1962. Flora is
the second deadliest hurricane ever in the Atlantic, with over 7000
deaths.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Hottest spot in the nation yesterday was
Death Valley, California with 109 degrees. Coldest place was Point
Lay, Alaska with 11 degrees. Shirley Basin, Wyoming dropped to 22
degrees. In Pennsylvania, Erie was soaked with 1.75 inches of rain.

...October Is Upon Us!...

VERY PLEASANT, BUT WAY TOO DRY: October is here in all of its glory.
We could sure enjoy it more if we were not so dry. An example of the
dryness are these September rain totals:

0.40 Birmingham Airport
0.51 Downtown Birmingham
0.42 Gadsden
0.32 Livingston
0.65 Vigo (NE Alabama, east of Piedmont)

October is traditionally our driest month of the year. Unfortunately,
we can have some serious droughts this time of year. 1924 is the
most notable one when we had one of the worst droughts ever. We had
exactly zero drops of rain that month and a mere 0.01 in November. We
went 51 days in a row with not a drip of rain between September 30 and
November 20.

Even though we are also dry this autumn, we are in better shape than a
year ago. So far this year, Birmingham has received 44.26 inches of
rain—almost double the 23 inches at this same time last year. We are
actually 2.60 inches ahead for this year.

BACK TO THE PRESENT: This is one of those textbook weather days that
we long for during triple HHH weather of mid-summer. HHH stands for
Hot, Humid and Hazy. I daresay that, if you could get high enough off
the ground, you could almost see Mt. Cheaha and DeSoto State Park from
here. The humidity is very low and there is a brisk north wind. We
expect 40s tonight over all of North and Central Alabama. There is a
possibility of a few protected valley locations in NE Alabama cooling
to 38 or 39 tonight. We will try to run a list of low temperatures
tomorrow morning.

Some of our weather models have trended warmer for tomorrow night and
indicate lows in the 52 to 54 range. We are not going to buy that
solution immediately. It may be partially because those weather models
switched to a winter configuration today.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Memphis will be at Legion Field tomorrow evening to
play UAB. It should be clear with 65 at kick off and 58 for the final
whistle. We will have a complete football forecast for high school and
weekend college games starting tomorrow, but it still looks great for
all games involved, as well as the weekend NASCAR races at Talladega.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Laura lost that title this morning.
She is still a North Atlantic storm, but she has lost her tropical
bloodline. She was more than 300 miles east of the Newfoundland coast.
The long-range projection sends her eastward across the North Atlantic
in the general direction of Scotland. She will not be a big factor at
that time. The NHC has listed their last advisory.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: It was 26 degrees at Pahaska, Wyoming for the
coldest in the lower 48…it was 12 at Notak and Denali
National Park in Alaska…1 inch of new snow at Bettles, Alaska and good
old Deadhorse had an 11-degree wind chill.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Big changes for Little Miss Molly's best
friend (me)! Starting today I am going to do almost all of the walking
around our half-mile track when Molly needs to. I need the exercise. I
am also changing my eating habits today with only a single helping
each meal. My only liquids will be coffee and water. No more soft
drinks. A year from now I want to be as small as Jason Simpson and
able to run a 40-yard dash in 20 seconds. Wish me luck. Life goes on.

...October Arrives With A Cool Change...

COOLEST AIR SO FAR THIS SEASON: A nice shot of cool air arrives right
on time as October begins, which happens to be my favorite month of
the year. The weather we expect for the next few days is what this
month is all about; sunny pleasant days with a cobalt blue sky, and
clear crisp nights that bring out the sweaters and jackets for the
first time this season. We expect a fresh north breeze today with a
high only in the mid 70s. Then, tonight, with a clear sky and
diminishing wind, we expect temperatures to fall quickly, and most
spots will wind up in the mid 40s by daybreak tomorrow. Friday morning
should be a few degrees cooler, and on both mornings some of the
normally colder valleys across North Alabama have a chance of reaching
the upper 30s, not too far from frost levels.

OUR WEEKEND: The dry air stays in place for the weekend, so we expect
beautiful weather on Saturday and Sunday; great for football, NASCAR
racing at Talladega, or anything else you want to do outside. Highs
will be in the 80 to 83 degree range, with lows well down in the 50s
both mornings.

A VERY DRY SEPTEMBER: Shades of 2007, Batman!! It looks like
September, 2008, will go in the record books as the 7th driest
September on record for Birmingham since 1900, 109 years of weather
records. The two driest September months with no rain recorded were
1903 and 1955. Our total for September 2008 was only 0.40".
We will mention some risk of showers early next week, especially
Monday night and Tuesday, but for now it looks like the primary upper
support will pass well to the north of Alabama, and moisture levels
will be limited, so don't expect a big rain event. October is normally
our driest month of the year.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Subtropical Storm Laura continues moving northeast
across the open North Atlantic; it is no threat to the U.S. mainland
or the Gulf of Mexico. And, in the far Southeast Gulf of Mexico and
Northwest Caribbean, disturbed weather continues, but upper air winds
will be harsh over the region and tropical storm formation is not
expected.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: Coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday was Anaktuvuk
Pass, Alaska with 9 degrees. Coldest in the lower 48 was Lake
Yellowstone, WY with 27. Hottest place was Death Valley, CA with 108.
Strong thunderstorms moved across much of the Florida peninsula during
the day, and a waterspout touched down near Key West.

ON THIS DATE IN 1893: Second major hurricane of the year strikes the
Bayou Country of South Louisiana. A total of 1000 people died in the
storm.

...Great Weather, But We Miss The Rain...

A DRY ALABAMA WEATHER STORY: But, at least during the next 5 days, we
will have some most enjoyable temperatures. Too bad we need rain so
much or they would be even more enjoyable. We will have a
reinforcement of cooler air starting tomorrow and again Thursday night
and early Friday. This will keep our temperatures in the 70s the rest
of the week, except they may edge upward to the lower 80s Saturday and
Sunday. Even then, the humidity will still be relatively low, so those
temperatures will clearly be comfortable.

We are also in for our lowest night-time temperatures so far this
season. Tonight's 53 will be nice, but when you go out at daybreak
Thursday and Friday mornings to walk the dog or fetch a newspaper,
temperatures will be well down into the 40s. While we are calling for
44 to 46 across the I-20 corridor, some of the NE Alabama valleys will
almost surely chill to 38 or 39. We will post a list of those low
temperatures both mornings.

RECREATION WEATHER: We will be more specific with our football
forecast starting Thursday, including projected temperatures at kick
off and final whistle. The weather still looks great for the Alabama/
Kentucky game in Tuscaloosa and Auburn/Vanderbilt in Nashville as well
as all of the high school games. This is a big weekend coming up for
the Talladega Raceway with several races over the weekend. The weather
looks very good with lower 80s in the afternoon.

TROPICAL WEATHER: There is still a large area of cloudiness with
showers and thunderstorms across the extreme Western Atlantic, across
Florida and into the SE Gulf of Mexico, Western Cuba and the NW
Caribbean. The winds upstairs are giving the system a cold shoulder
and help them prevent development. Meanwhile, Lady Laura is hanging I
there. Laura is now a legitimate tropical storm, but she will not
remain all tropical very long. She was getting into the colder waters
of the North Atlantic over 400 miles SSE of Cape Race, Newfoundland.
Sustained winds were 60 mph. Amazingly, (but really not that unusual)
she will curve NE and then east finally reaching Scotland early Sunday
and then emerging into the North Sea and headed toward Norway. Of
course, she will just be a North Atlantic storm at that time, but
still may cause problems. My 4th grade imagination runs away at times
like this. I wish I knew what all of those great big whales think when
that storm tosses them around. I know they don't rush out and buy milk
and bread, so I guess they simply dive lower. Did you know that the
literacy rate for Norway is an amazing 100%?

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I have a backlog of e-mail telling
interesting stuff about puppies and dogs. I will catch up soon. I may
need to post a special story on the 33/40 Blog. There is a Miss Molly
category provided for such stories. Since we are running a semi-motel
in our home, I can tell that Little Miss Molly really misses me. The
bonding that built up even in the first year of her life is as strong
as super glue. Molly and I understand each other almost 100%. She
loves me—that makes me happy. Life goes on.

...A Cool Change Ahead...

MUCH COOLER TOMORROW: While today will remain rather warm, with highs
in the mid 80s, the coolest air so far this season rolls into Alabama
tonight and tomorrow. We will enjoy a fresh north breeze, and most
North Alabama communities will see a high only in the low 70s
tomorrow. Then, by daybreak Thursday, everyone will be down in the
40s. Of course, this means the chance of upper 30s for the normally
colder valleys across the northern half of the state. The fine fall
weather continues Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: This is a big weekend for most Alabamians; of course we
have high school and college football, but don't forget this is race
weekend at Talladega. The good news is that we expect the dry weather
to continue into Saturday and Sunday with comfortable temperatures.
Highs over the weekend should be in the low 80s, with lows well down
in the 50s.

GETTING DRY AROUND HERE: Birmingham's rain total for the month of
September is going to be only 0.40". We still have a rain surplus of
2.72" for the year, but most other Alabama cities are showing a very
significant deficiency. Rain deficiencies since January 1 include
1.96" at Anniston, 10.00" at Tuscaloosa, and 13.18" at Huntsville. The
prospect of a major rain event looks very small here during the next 7
to 14 days as the dry weather pattern continues.

TROPICS: Laura is a sub-tropical storm in the North Atlantic, about
690 miles southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Don't worry about this
one too much, it will move across the North
Atlantic, and will be close to the coast of Ireland by the weekend.
Elsewhere, a disturbance in the Southeast Gulf of Mexico will move
northeast, across South Florida, during the next 36 hours, but upper
air winds don't favor tropical storm formation. The rest of the
Atlantic basin is quiet. Hurricane season runs through the end of
November.

FOCUS ON BARROW: Barrow, Alaska is the National Weather Service's most
northerly First-Order weather station. Although it generally records
the lowest mean average temperatures in Alaska during winter months,
Barrow rarely experiences the extreme cold temperatures typical of the
Alaska Interior, and virtually never sets record cold winter
temperatures for the state. On November 18 or 19 the sun goes down,
and remains below the horizon for about 65 days until it re-appears,
normally on January 22 or January 23, as the long Arctic winter night
ends. In addition to the low temperatures and months without sun,
Barrow is also one of the cloudiest places on earth. Owing to the
prevailing easterly winds off the Arctic Ocean, Barrow is completely
overcast slightly more than 50% of the year and at least 70% overcast
62% of the time.

EXTREMES: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 109. Coldest was Chalkyitsik, Alaska (anyone know how to say
that?) at one degree below zero.

...October-Like Dryness...

AUTUMN FLEXING ITS MUSCLE: It is not quite October, but the last
couple of weeks in Alabama have acted like October, which is
traditionally our driest month of the year. A series of tropical
systems chipped away at our rain deficit for quite a while, but
finally we turned dry.

That dryness is the continuing story for the rest of this week. On the
thermometer, autumn is insisting that we recognize its presence. We
will have another cool front come through Central Alabama early
tomorrow morning and still another one at some point late in the week
or this weekend. With the front tomorrow, do not be surprised to see 1
to 2 isolated showers on radar. However, we considered the threat so
small that we did not mention it in the formal forecast.

It was quite warm across the state Monday with Montgomery even
reaching the 90-degree mark. Those high temperatures will back off
considerably by Wednesday holding in the mid 70s through Friday. When
you wake up Thursday and Friday morning, there will be a chill in the
air with mid 40s common across Central Alabama. Look for some of the
NE Alabama traditionally colder valleys to report about 38.

SPORTS WEATHER: We will post a specific football forecast later in
the week, as well as a more definitive forecast for the NASCAR at
Talladega. However, we believe that both the Alabama/Kentucky game in
Tuscaloosa Saturday and the Auburn/Vanderbilt game in Nashville will
be dry. The NASCAR weekend looks dry, but we will re-examine that
later in the week.

NOW THERE IS LAURA: She is not a full-blooded tropical storm, instead
semi-tropical, but she has trended more toward tropical in the last
several hours. Not to worry. She will not bother the USA. She was
centered 700 miles SSE of Cape Race, Newfoundland this afternoon with
sustained winds of 60 mph. That lady should curve NE and east and head
straight toward the British Isles by this weekend. Meanwhile, Kyle is
out of the picture, but he dumped a lot of rain over the NE and there
were a number of reports of flooding in Maine. He caused Portland to
set an all-time record for September rain with 10.83 inches—the first
time ever they have exceeded 10 inches in September.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: It is interesting that the Sahara Desert in Africa
plays a part in our annual hurricane drama. I will do a longer story
on that soon as to how that works…23 in Stanley, Idaho and 10 in
Arctic Village, Alaska were the USA cold spots this morning.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Interesting how different dogs have
contrasting personalities. Our friends in New Hope in Cullman County,
Robbie and Noel Mize, took their dog to the PBS the same day as Molly.
A very different attitude. Their dog Beau jumps up and down with
excitement when he gets to go. He rides looking out the window and, if
Noel asks him, "Do you want to go," he gets overly excited. He looked
like a woolly burger before the haircut and now they can see his
bright eyes. Our Little Miss Molly, my stick-tight pal, came to me
late Saturday to tell me she does not like football. Our living area
was as loud as the game at times Saturday and Saturday night with the
grown adults cheering or moaning and making so much noise that Little
Miss Molly slinked away. She does not like that much commotion. On top
of that, she had to give up her playtime for the day. Life goes on and
she is still a very happy little girl.

...Are You Ready for some 40s?...

More beautiful fall weather is on tap for Central Alabama in the week
ahead, as a couple of shots of cooler and drier air overspread the
state. Some of the coolest readings since last May are expected
across the area.

THE WEEK AHEAD: We will start the new work week with sunny and dry
conditions. Temperatures today will warm into the lower and middle
80s. A strong upper trough will be diving southward out of the upper
Midwest. As it does, it will push a cold front southward. The front
will push through the state on Tuesday afternoon. The front will have
little to work with in the way of moisture, so rain chances will very
small. Behind the front, it will be on the breezy side as the new
airmass moves into the area. Wednesday should be sunny and cooler.
By Thursday morning, we think there will be widespread readings in the
40s across much of North and Central Alabama. A reinforcing shot of
cooler and drier air will arrive late on Friday, continuing the dry
trend…

INTO THE WEEKEND: As we head toward the weekend, that dry and
relatively cool air will be in place, setting the stage for a great
weekend for all of the state's sporting activities. It will feel like
football weather in Nashville and Tuscaloosa for Auburn and Alabama
fans with pleasant, mild afternoons and refreshing overnights that
will feature readings in the 40s.

NEXT RAIN CHANCE: As we head toward the weekend, that dry and
relatively cool air will be in place, setting the stage for a great
weekend for all of the state's sporting activities. It will feel like
football weather in Nashville and Tuscaloosa for the Auburn and
Alabama games. Perfect weather for the NASCAR race at Talladega.
Sunny skies after a cool start, with highs in the 70s.

KYLE: Hurricane Kyle moved inland over the Canadian Maritimes last
night as it made the transition from a tropical to extratropical
cyclone. It sure didn't look like much on satellite photos Sunday,
but recon crews were still finding 80 mph winds in the storm.
Tropical or extratropical, an 80 mph wind is still an 80 mph wind. It
spread strong winds over New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Maine escaped
most of the ill effects as it was west of the storm center.

ELSEWHERE IN THE TROPICS: The low over the Yucatan will move
northeastward today, moving over the open waters. It could become a
tropical depression as it moves toward the Florida Peninsula. There
is also a low in the Central Atlantic west of the Azores. This system
could also become a subtropical or tropical cyclone as it moves slowly
westward.

ON THIS DATE IN 1965: Mobile was inundated with 16.85 inches of rain
during the night of the September 29th into the morning of the 30th
as Tropical Storm Debbie neared the Gulf Coast. The flooding resulted
in $25 million in damage in the Mobile area. Debbie is interesting
because the storm never made landfall. As it approached the northern
Gulf Coast on September 29th, it began to entrain dry air.

...Dry Weather To Continue...

Get ready for a continuation of our fine fall weather pattern for the
foreseeable future. The good weather is nice, but we really could
use some rain. And no real good rain chances are in sight for the
next ten days.

RAINFALL UPDATE: Over the past couple of weeks, we have watched our
rainfall surplus in Birmingham slowly decline. Now we are 2.97 inches
above average for the year. At east we still have a surplus, but
other places are not as lucky. Montgomery is down 2.70 inches for the
year. At the start of September, they were nearly exactly even. In
Birmingham, we are 3.28 inches below normal for the month. In
Huntsville, at the Airport, 29.65 inches of rain has fallen since
January 1. Tuscaloosa is nearly ten inches below average (9.76
inches.) The average by this point is 42.77 inches, 13.12 inches
below average. Anniston is 1.76 inches short. In South Alabama,
Mobile is 5.55 inches short.

ALABAMA'S WEATHER: A weakening surface trough is lifting out of
Alabama this afternoon. A surface high was to the west of the state.
We continue under a northerly flow both at the
surface and aloft. Some low level moisture was around this morning to
produce some clouds and fog mainly over eastern sections, but that is
moving out also, leaving mostly sunny skies in its place. Monday looks
like it will be like today, with lots of sunshine and warm temperatures.

FRONTAL SYSTEM: A strong autumn trough will take shape over the
Great Lakes this week. It will push a cold front toward Alabama on
Tuesday. This front won't have much to work with in the way of
moisture, however, so rain chances will be very, very small. Behind
it, breezy, cooler and drier conditions will prevail over Alabama
through the rest of the week and into the weekend. Highs in the 70s
will become the norm, along with lows in the 50s. There will also be
some 40s, especially by Thursday morning.

HURRICANE KYLE: Kyle was passing about 160 miles east of Cape Cod
this afternoon, heading toward a landfall just east of Maine. Maine
has not seen a landfalling hurricane since 1969. Most of Kyle's punch
is on the eastern side of the storm, so it looks like Massachusetts
will miss tropical storm force winds. Tropical storm warnings and a
hurricane watch are in effect for Downeast Maine. Widespread power
outages are expected in Downeast Maine and the Martimes of Canada,
where trees will be broken or uprooted by the strong winds.

GULF DEPRESSION THIS WEEK? Surface low pressure over the Yucatan
Peninsula is expected to move northeastward out in the southern Gulf
of Mexico later today. It could become a tropical depression,
although a decent amount of wind shear should keep it from growing
very strong. It will impact the Florida Peninsula Monday night and
Tuesday with heavy rain and some wind.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Hurricane Juan made landfall on the coast of
Nova Scotia shortly before midnight, just west of Halifax. Winds
gusted as high as 90 mph in Halifax. Ahead of the storm, unseasonable
warmth surged into Canada. The high at Naim reached 77 degrees,
easily a record, and some thirty degrees above normal for the date.
