...A Cool Change Ahead...

MUCH COOLER TOMORROW: While today will remain rather warm, with highs
in the mid 80s, the coolest air so far this season rolls into Alabama
tonight and tomorrow. We will enjoy a fresh north breeze, and most
North Alabama communities will see a high only in the low 70s
tomorrow. Then, by daybreak Thursday, everyone will be down in the
40s. Of course, this means the chance of upper 30s for the normally
colder valleys across the northern half of the state. The fine fall
weather continues Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: This is a big weekend for most Alabamians; of course we
have high school and college football, but don't forget this is race
weekend at Talladega. The good news is that we expect the dry weather
to continue into Saturday and Sunday with comfortable temperatures.
Highs over the weekend should be in the low 80s, with lows well down
in the 50s.

GETTING DRY AROUND HERE: Birmingham's rain total for the month of
September is going to be only 0.40". We still have a rain surplus of
2.72" for the year, but most other Alabama cities are showing a very
significant deficiency. Rain deficiencies since January 1 include
1.96" at Anniston, 10.00" at Tuscaloosa, and 13.18" at Huntsville. The
prospect of a major rain event looks very small here during the next 7
to 14 days as the dry weather pattern continues.

TROPICS: Laura is a sub-tropical storm in the North Atlantic, about
690 miles southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland. Don't worry about this
one too much, it will move across the North
Atlantic, and will be close to the coast of Ireland by the weekend.
Elsewhere, a disturbance in the Southeast Gulf of Mexico will move
northeast, across South Florida, during the next 36 hours, but upper
air winds don't favor tropical storm formation. The rest of the
Atlantic basin is quiet. Hurricane season runs through the end of
November.

FOCUS ON BARROW: Barrow, Alaska is the National Weather Service's most
northerly First-Order weather station. Although it generally records
the lowest mean average temperatures in Alaska during winter months,
Barrow rarely experiences the extreme cold temperatures typical of the
Alaska Interior, and virtually never sets record cold winter
temperatures for the state. On November 18 or 19 the sun goes down,
and remains below the horizon for about 65 days until it re-appears,
normally on January 22 or January 23, as the long Arctic winter night
ends. In addition to the low temperatures and months without sun,
Barrow is also one of the cloudiest places on earth. Owing to the
prevailing easterly winds off the Arctic Ocean, Barrow is completely
overcast slightly more than 50% of the year and at least 70% overcast
62% of the time.

EXTREMES: Warmest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, CA
with 109. Coldest was Chalkyitsik, Alaska (anyone know how to say
that?) at one degree below zero.
