...Two Weeks Dry...

Today marks the thirteenth straight day without rain at the Birmingham
Airport. Dry weather is a staple of October in Central Alabama, but
it came early this year. Without Tropical Storm Fay in late August,
Birmingham's rainfall deficit would be getting significant. Other
Central Alabama locations do have some sizeable deficits for the year.

DEFICIT UPDATE: Birmingham is sort of an anomaly right now, since we
actually have a surplus in the rainfall department. And again, that
is because of Fay. Elsewhere across North and Central Alabama, other
locations are not so lucky. Anniston is 2.25 inches in the hole.
Montgomery is 3.26 inches down for the year. Tuscaloosa is down 10.33
inches. And Huntsville is down a whopping 13.76 inches.

OUR FORECAST: Things are looking like they might be coming together
for a decent rain and thunderstorm event by midweek here in Alabama.
The timing is a bit uncertain, with the models flip flopping between
last night and this morning. One run says Wednesday for best rain
chances, next run says Thursday. With an upper low, bet on the
latter, so rain we may have to slide those chances back a bit in later
forecasts. For now, we will call for rain and storms beginning late
Tuesday night into Wednesday. Some of the storms could be strong.
Dry weather will follow the front, but look for another storm system
late in the weekend.

TROPICS: The tropical Atlantic is still quiet for the time being.
There is an area of low pressure over the western Caribbean that is
drifting into the Yucatan Peninsula. It is expected to move little
through the rest of the weekend. Upper level winds are not favourable
for development. There are signs that the rest of October will be
active in the tropical department. The CSU team predicts there will
be three named storms between now and the end of October.

SIGNS OF THE TIMES: Four inches of snow or more are expected Saturday
night into Sunday in the elevations above 8,000 feet over the San
Juan Mountains of south-western Colorado. One of my favorite places
is Telluride, nestled in a box canyon, surrounded on three sides by
towering 14,000 foot peaks. They are expecting two inches of snow
over the weekend in the picturesque town.

ON THIS DATE IN 1909: In November 1868, a Lieutenant Stephen Saxby
of the British Navy made an amazing long range forecast. He wrote a
London newspaper, predicting that a storm of unusual violence would be
accompanied by an extremely high tide on the October 5th of the
following year. Then without the benefit of long range computer
models or satellites, a resident of Nova Scotia wrote his local
newspaper, referring to Saxby's prediction, warning that a severe
storm would strike on the 4th or 5th in Halifax. The storm did strike
Halifax on the night of the 4th, but was not especially severe.
However, in nearby New Brunswick, the storm caused winds of hurricane
force, extreme flooding and severe damage. The storm reached its peak
at about 9pm on the 4th. But this was actually after midnight in
London, meaning that Saxby's forecast was eerilly correct.
