...Nice Weekend Continues...

Clouds have been increasing all day across the state in a southwesterly flow. They have been enhanced somewhat by a weak upper level disturbance, a little trough in the mid level flow up about 10,000 feet. A few radar returns were showing up on radars across southern Alabama and Mississippi, but that precipitation is not reaching the ground according to surface reports. The airmass across the South is still too dry. But that will be changing. The cloudiness affected today's temperatures, with the warmest readings coming up north where readings in the Tennessee Valley managed to reach the upper 60s. Upper 50s and lower 60s were common across Central Alabama. Overnight lows will drop to near 40 degrees in most spots.

CHANGES AHEAD: A strong upper trough is diving southeastward over the northern Plains this afternoon. Ahead of this trough, moisture levels will be picking up Sunday night and it will become breezy. Showers will reach western and northwestern Alabama Sunday evening and spread southeastward across the state overnight and into Monday.

SECOND ROUND OF SHOWERS: Monday night and most of Tuesday will be dry, but rain will move back into the state Tuesday night as a low pressure system over the western Gulf moves northeastward. Rain will be likely Wednesday, especially over South Alabama, where rainfall amounts could be heavy. Much of Central Alabama could receive a couple of inches between now and late Wednesday. Dry Friday and Saturday, but rain may return as early as Sunday.

TROPICS: The Atlantic Hurricane season will come to an end officially on Monday. It has been a relatively quiet year and we don't see anything that we will have to add to the rolls for 2009. So we will get ready to close the book on this year's season with a tropical review Sunday and Monday mornings on AlabamaWX.com.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Central Florida is playing UAB at Legion Field this afternoon with a 12:30 p.m. kick off. Temperatures will fall back into the 50s by the final whistle.

WEATHERBRAINS: Lots of exciting guests coming up over the next few weeks on WeatherBrains, the weekly netcast that is all about weather. This week, it will be storm chaser Roger Hill. He may be the most prolific storm chaser, bagging tornadoes virtually every time he goes out. Then it is legendary Oklahoma City weatherman Gary England on the 7th. Our winter storm preparedness show will be on the 14th, with a special look back at the horrible Kentucky winter storm from this past January. We look at Alaska weather with friend of the podcast Todd Foisy, one of the hosts of the Alaska Weather Show. We wrap up the year with a review show on the 28th that will feature a special guest we can't announce just yet. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe at iTunes. It's free!

ON THE DATE IN 1999: The twelfth named storm of the North Atlantic Hurricane Season formed in the Caribbean on this date. Within a few hours, Tropical Storm Lenny was upgraded to a hurricane, with maximum winds of 80 mph. The hurricane was moving eastward and was threatening the island of Jamaica. ...Nice Weekend...

We are getting off to a chilly start across Central Alabama on this Saturday after Thanksgiving. Temperatures are near freezing or below in most spots. But things will begin to warm up today as surface high pressure to our south slides east and allows for a return southern flow across the state.

WEEKEND WEATHER: Today and tomorrow will be partly cloudy across the area. Highs both days will top out in the middle 60s. Lows tonight will drop to around 40. Clouds will be thickening tomorrow night as a strengthening upper trough swings southeastward towards Alabama. With increasing moisture, rain chances will increase Sunday night and lows will drop to only around 50.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Central Florida will be in Birmingham to play UAB Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. kick off. The temperature should get to a fairly comfortable 65 during the game, but maybe in the 50s by the final whistle.

A NEW WORK WEEK: A cold front will be knocking at the door of Northwest Alabama by Monday morning, and this means a good chance of showers during the day on Monday. With the clouds and precipitation, temperatures will top out in the middle 50s. Rain will end from t he west late Monday and temperatures Monday night will fall to near 40 over Central Alabama, with a few 30s over northern sections. By Tuesday morning, low pressure will be forming over the western Gulf of Mexico. This low will move to the northeast, spreading rain back into Alabama late Tuesday night and Wednesday. The highest rain chances and heaviest rainfall amounts will be over South Alabama. Expect clearing skies and colder conditions for Thursday, with a freeze likely deep into Central Alabama by Friday morning. Friday looks partly cloudy and cool, with highs perhaps remaining in the 40s.

NEXT WEEKEND AND BEYOND: High pressure will be sliding off to our east by the weekend, allowing for a gradual return of moisture and warmer temperatures. It will also set the stage for rain chances by the following Monday. The latest runs of the GFS depict a big wet weather system on the 7th and 8th, followed by some cold air into Alabama and the Deep South.

WEATHERBRAINS: I hope you heard our 200th episode. Cleveland TV legend Dick Goddard joined Ohio weather historian Thomas Schmidlin and the WeatherBrains guys to talk some weather. This week, Roger Hill, one of the greatest storm chasers around joins the panel. Listen at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. It's free!

ON THIS DATE IN 1921: New England was in the midst of a four day ice storm, their worst of record. Ice was more than three inches thick in many places following the storm, and property damage was in the millions of dollars. Northern New England received heavy snow with more than two feet reported in some areas. Overnight freezing rains continued through the day at Worcester MA while the wind increased to a gale. Streets become impassable even on foot, and whole towns were plunged into darkness without communication. The storm caused 20 million dollars damage to power lines, telephone lines and trees. ...Zillions of Shoppers...

A WARMING TREND: No telling how many shoppers were out before daybreak, but we are sure they felt the biting cold. Temperatures early this morning dropped below freezing in a number of Alabama locations, especially in the NE Alabama valleys. We have a long list of those low temperatures on the 33/40 Weather BLOG, but we list a selected few here:

23 Hamilton

24 Cottondale

25 McCalla, Addison

26 Pinson, Scrougeout, Broomtown, Dora, Centreville

29 Cullman, Huntsville, Tuscaloosa

30 Birmingham, Anniston, Montgomery

Take heart, we have a warming trend ahead and pronounced enough that the old backyard thermometer will reach for 65 Saturday afternoon and 67 Sunday afternoon. It will still be cold again tonight, but several degrees warmer than last night.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Looks like a good chance of showers on Monday. We will have a temporary break on Tuesday, but more showers will arrive Tuesday night and become more widespread on Wednesday. Part of that is due to another cold front that will be moving through the area on Monday and by Wednesday another low-pressure area off the Louisiana/Mississippi coast will start encouraging a warm front to move northward from the Gulf.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Another near perfect night for high school play off games. Only cold-natured people will be uncomfortable, but even they will be okay if they wear some warm clothing. Clear weather is expected for all of the games. As a general rule, the temperature should be in the 40s at kick off and maybe around 38 for the final whistle. Not much wind is expected. Central Florida will be in Birmingham to play UAB Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. kick off. The temperature should get to a fairly comfortable 65 during the game, but maybe in the 50s by the final whistle.

GLOBAL ROAMING: The lower 48 is in fairly good shape for the continuing holiday weekend, especially for those needing to travel. Lots of rain over New England today and some winter storm advisories in the Western mountains, but overall the weather is quieter than normal for this time of year…the warm spot in the nation yesterday was 87 at Fullerton, California…cold spots this morning included 3 above zero at Bryce Canyon, Utah and Gunnison and Kremmling in Colorado…in Alaska, it is not as bitter cold as it has been recently. Lowest was 17 below at Fort Yukon.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I clearly need three arms and three hands when dealing with Little Miss Molly. I wish so badly that I could document by digital photography some of the great scenes on our walking track, but I have the leash in one hand and the highly important little blue scoop in the other. This morning she had me walking after I had only two ounces of coffee in my little body and the sun was not yet up. That was a beautiful scene in the wide open area near the Old Crow Motel. The first sun rays reflected across the frost-covered grass. Would have made a great Kinkade painting, but I did not know how to reach him. Life goes on.

...Dry Through Sunday...

SEVERE CLEAR: Look for another day of maximum sunshine for Alabama today with very dry air in place. Temperatures will remain cool, with most communities seeing a high in the mid 50s this afternoon. Tonight will be cold again with the possibility of another freeze by daybreak tomorrow. Then, a warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon with a high in the mid 60s under a sunny sky. We will rise into the upper 60s Sunday afternoon with sunshine through scattered high clouds.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: We continue to forecast a deep blue sky for today's Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The temperature in Auburn for the 1:30 kickoff will be near 55 degrees, falling into the 40s during the second half as the sun sets. For tonight's high school semi-final playoff games, cold is the word. With a clear sky, temperatures will fall from the mid 40s at kickoff into the upper 30s by the final whistle. And, tomorrow UAB will host Central Florida at Birmingham's Legion Field at 12:30. The sky will be sunny with a temperature near 62 degrees at kickoff, falling into the upper 50s by the end of the game.

NEXT WEEK: A rather complex storm system will impact Alabama early next week. Computer model consistency has not been good, making for a low confidence forecast. But for now, we believe the system will come out in two pieces; the first round of showers will be Monday, followed by the second round on Wednesday. Between the two waves we figure rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely. The chance of severe weather at this time looks low with a stable airmass in place.

TRAVEL WEATHER: No major storms for the nation again today, but some rain is likely for the northern part of New England, and scattered rain and snow showers will develop over the western third of the nation. Generally speaking, temperatures around the U.S. are very close to average values for late November.

ON THIS DATE IN 1898: The "Portland Storm," named for passenger ship S.S. Portland, that sunk off of Cape Cod, killing all 200 aboard, ravages New England with heavy snow and wind. 12 inches fall at Boston and 27 inches fall at New England, CT, Winds gust to 72 mph at Boston and to near 100 mph at Block Island, RI. A total of 56 vessels sank in Boston Harbor with 456 dead.

WEATHER CALL: Weather call is our new system that provides you and your family a great way of receiving severe weather watches and warnings. When a severe weather warning includes your location, you will receive a phone call from Chief Meteorologist James Spann, 24 hours a day. You can also receive the warning by email with a detailed map of the threat area. You may also use any of the email addresses to set up the warning to be delivered by SMS text messaging to your cell phone. Sign up on the web at abc3340.com.

...A Great Weekend...

DID YOU KNOW that Lake Winnipeg, Manitoba is almost 250 miles long? That is way far away from Alabama, so let us go home.

THE ALABAMA SITUATION: If humans were in control, it would take a committee of 500 several days to come up with a Thanksgiving Day as nice as today. That is, if you do not mind some chilly temperatures. It is another one of those autumn days when the visibility is unrestricted, the sky is a bright blue and people are enjoying a Thanksgiving holiday. With clear weather overnight, the temperature dropped to below freezing in some locations this morning—a few degrees lower than we had forecast. Samples:

27 Hamilton
28 Muscadine
29 Pinson
30 Centreville, Dearmanville, McCalla (heavy frost in McCalla)
31 Addison, Anniston Airport
32 Jasper
The low in Homewood was 38 and they have not had frost so far—quite a contrast to some of the valleys in NE Alabama.

OUR NEXT RAIN: A significant change in our weather late in the weekend and early next week. By Monday morning, a low-pressure area will be forming near the Gulf Coast, while another cold front will be moving down from the Central Plains. This will give us a good chance of showers Monday along with at least a few thunderstorms. It looks like that type weather will linger into Tuesday and all the way into Wednesday. By Saturday and Sunday, our high temperatures will recover to the 60s. Another cold front arriving Tuesday will pull us back into the 50s for afternoon highs.

SHOP UNTIL YOU DROP FRIDAY: Other than a chilly start, if you are going out shortly after midnight tonight or even daybreak tomorrow, it will be near freezing. But for your shopping spree, it looks like 100% sunshine Friday with a high in the mid 50s. I will not be seeing any of you. My shopping will have to come later.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Tuskegee is at Alabama State this afternoon. Great weather with the temperature around 60 for the 3:00 p.m. kick off…Alabama is at Auburn for the 1:30 kick off Friday afternoon. Zero chance of rain, totally clear, temperatures will peak around 58 during the first half with some 40s by late in the game. Central Florida will be in Birmingham to play UAB in a 12:30 game. Temperatures should peak around 62 in the first half with lower 50s late in the game. For high school play off games Friday night, clear chilly weather with 48 to 50 at kick off with 38 to 40 late in the game.

GLOBAL ROAMING: 87 at Lake Forest, California was the warmest yesterday…an even zero at Gunnison, Colorado was the lowest this morning…in Alaska, the coldest was 19 below at Ft. Yukon…the heavy showers yesterday dumped 1.52 inches of rain on Miami, 1.44 on Palm Beach and 1.25 in Tampa.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: There is so much to be thankful for on this day. Way down the totem pole, but still very important to us, is the seven delightful years we have had Little Miss Molly in our home. She completely makes our day and is so unpredictable at times that we die laughing. The walking track around our street is exactly ½-mile long. I walk Molly at least 1 mile a day, so that means in the last 7 years, we have walked 2,500 miles. No wonder I am pooped, but life goes on.

...Happy Thanksgiving!...

COOLER AIR INVADES ALABAMA: A sharp upper trough is developing over the eastern third of the nation on this Thanksgiving morning, and will bring a shot of colder air down into Alabama. Temperatures today will be about 10 degrees cooler than yesterday; most places will see a high somewhere between 50 and 55 degrees despite a good supply of sunshine. A gusty north wind will make it feel cooler. Then, tonight, as the wind dies down, temperatures will drop quickly, and we will be around the freezing mark by daybreak tomorrow. Early shoppers will need to bundle up with early morning temperatures in the 28 to 34 degree range. Tomorrow will be another sunny and cool day with a high in the mid 50s.

Our weather stays dry Saturday and Sunday. While we will begin Saturday with a light freeze, we will warm into the low to mid 60s Saturday, with mid to upper 60s Sunday afternoon as the warming trend continues.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tomorrow's Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium, ideal weather for the 1:30 kickoff, no chance of rain at all, a clear sky and temperature peaking around 55 early in the game, but dropping into the 40s by the fourth quarter as the sun sets. For tomorrow night's high school playoff games, cold is the word. With a clear sky, temperatures will fall from the upper 40s at kickoff into the upper 30s by the final whistle. Saturday, Central Florida is at UAB for a 12:30 game at Legion Field. The temperature will reach 62 in the first half and in the 50s for the second half. The sky will be sunny with a light east breeze.

OUR NEXT RAIN: A vigorous storm system will impact Alabama early next week, and will bring our next rain event on Monday. Based on the dynamics involved, some thunderstorms seem likely, but at this time we are not expecting a major severe weather threat due to the lack of instability. Looks like this system has the potential to bring one inch of rain to the state. The rain will end Monday night or early Tuesday, followed by cooler and drier air for mid-week.

ACROSS THE FRUITED PLAIN: Relatively calm weather continues for much of the nation; scattered rain and snow showers will continue around the Great Lakes under the upper trough, and rain is likely for much of the Northeast U.S. For today's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, the sky will be cloudy with temperatures in the 40s. Rain will likely move into the Big Apple after the parade is over later this afternoon and tonight.

ON THIS DATE IN 1988: Thunderstorms produced severe weather over the Central Gulf Coast States during the late morning and afternoon hours. Five tornadoes were reported in Mississippi, with the tornadoes causing a million dollars damage at Ruleville, and in Warren County.

...Colder Air Moving In...

DID YOU KNOW that the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica is as large as France? The edge of the ice shelf is 100-feet thick. Enough of that—back home to Alabama.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of some fresh cold air moving in from the NW that will give us a rather brisk Thanksgiving Day and some cold temperatures near freezing both Friday morning and Saturday morning. The cool front that moved through overnight is already east of the state. A second front will move across the state on Thursday and by Thursday night should be near the Gulf Coast. It will be a bit windy on Thanksgiving Day with high temperatures mostly in the low 50s. Friday should be all sunshine for the greatest shopping day of the year. Here in Central Alabama, it will be around 32 degrees when you rush to the mall well before daybreak. Some of the outlying areas may be closer to 30. The high on Friday will be in the mid 50s. It will be cold again Saturday morning with lows around 31, but a milder trend sets in Saturday afternoon and continues on Sunday with the old thermometer recovering to the mid 60s.

OUR NEXT RAIN: A few showers may show up late Sunday or Sunday night, but by far the best chance of rain will be on Monday when most areas will have a good chance. The rain will extend through Monday night and in through Tuesday. There will probably be some thunderstorms in this rain event, especially on Monday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Friday night final play-off games among high schools, the weather should be perfect for football. The temperature will be in the lower 50s at kick off and probably dropping into the 40s during the second half. For the Alabama/Auburn game played on Friday this year instead of Saturday, the kick off is around 1:30 at Auburn. Ideal weather, no chance of rain at all, a clear sky and temperature peaking around 55 or 57 early in the game, but there will be some 40s late in the game. On Thanksgiving Day, Tuskegee is at Alabama State for a 3:00 p.m. kick off. Sunny and cool, in the 50s, dropping into the 40s. On Saturday, Central Florida is a UAB for a 12:30 kick off. The temperature will reach 62 in the first half and in the 50s for the second half.

ROAMING THE WORLD: A nice e-mail this morning from Irene Walters in NW England where there were astounding flood problems in recent days. She said it was the worst in years and maybe unprecedented. One policeman was killed when a bridge collapsed and hundreds were driven out of their homes. The rain amounts were the most in well over 100 years since records have been kept…generally good travel weather for Thanksgiving across most of the country…lots of showers today across Florida with 4.26 inches of rain since midnight in Homestead and 1.58 in Tampa…Miami was again the warm spot yesterday with 86…cold places this morning, 2 below zero at Alamosa, Colorado and 14 below at Northway, Alaska…in extreme Northern Canada there was blowing snow and floating ice crystals…those ice crystals are a beautiful sight if the sun is out.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am thankful that none of you can eavesdrop on conversations I have with Little Miss Molly. I would be embarrassed. She had me out early this morning. I cupped her little head in my hands and had a talk with her about what I did not want her to do on the walk. She looked at me straight in the eye and actually rubbed noses with me as if she understood every word. Not so. She violated about half of the 10 things I told her. I have been walking Little Miss Molly for almost 7 years and this morning was the first time I have ever been stung by a wasp. He got away before I could extinguish him with my little blue pooper scoop. Life goes on.

...Colder Air Arrives Tomorrow...

DRY WEATHER CONTINUES: Many say this is the busiest travel day of the year. No doubt many families will be hitting the road today heading to Thanksgiving gatherings, and the good news is that the weather here in Alabama will be excellent, and there are no major storm systems around the nation to deal with if you are flying. Here at home, we expect a partly to mostly sunny sky with afternoon temperatures in the low to mid 60s, about where we should be in late November.

COLDER AIR TOMORROW: A deep upper trough will form over the eastern third of the nation tomorrow, and it will mean noticeably cooler air for Alabama. Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 50s with a cool north breeze. But, the sky will be sunny throughout the day as dry air continues to cover the state. By daybreak Friday, we should be at or below freezing, with most communities in the 28 to 32 degree range as the shoppers get ready to head out for their big day.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: What a great day for the Iron Bowl game this year. Friday afternoon in Auburn will be bright, sunny, and cool. The kickoff temperature (1:30 p.m.) will be near 52 degrees, then dropping into the 40s during the second half as the sun goes down. Look for a north wind at 5 to 10 mph, and there is absolutely no chance of rain. For the high school playoff games Friday night, the sky will be clear with a temperature in the mid 40s at kickoff. Many stadiums will be in the 30s by the final whistle, so a good warm jacket is certainly in order. I expect lots of hot chocolate will be sold at the concession stands.

REST OF THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND: Dry weather continues through Saturday and Sunday. While we will be around freezing early Saturday morning, afternoons will be comfortable with highs generally in the 60 to 65 degree range.

OUR NEXT RAIN EVENT: Global computer models continue to show a potent storm system impacting Alabama early next week, with some hint the rain could begin as early as late Sunday night. Widespread rain looks likely Monday, with potential for one inch of rain statewide. The good news is that the air should remain stable, and for now strong thunderstorms are not expected. Drier and colder air moves in following the rain by Tuesday and Wednesday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1950: Extreme cold in the deep south. Birmingham's low was 5 degrees, the coldest November temperature for the city by far. To the north, the mercury dropped to -1 on Sand Mountain and -2 at Valley Head. First time that sub zero readings had occurred in North Alabama in November. The bitter cold was accompanied by two inches of snow across North Alabama; Birmingham's snow depth was one inch. It was a cold wave of historic proportions that impacted much of the eastern U.S.

...The Alabama Story...

TWO MORE COLD FRONTS: It is not unusual at all to have a parade of cold fronts moving through Alabama this time of year. We have two more waiting in the wings to come across the state.

This afternoon a low-pressure area was moving across Missouri and Iowa with a cold front extending southward to Little Rock, Shreveport and Houston. It is not one of those fronts that is bringing in bitter cold. Instead, it will restock us with cooler dry air. Meanwhile, a second front will be coming through early on Thanksgiving Day and you will notice it more distinctly. We expect dry weather for the holiday with more sun than clouds, but NW winds will be 12-20 mph and a high only in the low to mid 50s.

A FREEZE? Will Friday morning be our first freeze for some parts of Central Alabama? It will be a close call. We are calling for an average low of 30. This means that some of the colder NE Alabama valleys could be as low as 26-30. This also means that you may want to dress warmly when you head to the mall way before sunrise. Good luck, because I will be sound asleep.

THE ALABAMA/AUBURN GAME: (Or, is it the Auburn/Alabama game?) I pull for both teams, but nobody in the whole wide world believes me except my little 9-pound puppy. Looks like great weather for the annual clash—this year being played in Auburn on Friday instead of Saturday. It should be sunny with temperatures at kick off in the lower 50s dropping quickly into the 40s during the second half. Winds should be fairly light, but you might still need some warm clothes. Tomorrow we will have a more extensive weather forecast—one day earlier than we normally do.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Looks like our best chance will come next Monday. We will finetune that by tomorrow. Updating Birmingham rain: the total for the year stands at 65.04 inches as compared to 47.04 a year ago today. Our surplus stands at 16.63 and Lake Purdy is still full!

LOOKING FAR AND WIDE: No severe weather expected in the good old USA for the next three days…somebody may get some fairly strong storms by Monday, however…the Tropics are as quiet as a sleeping dog and it is only six more days until the official hurricane season will be over…88 in Miami was the USA warm spot yesterday…at the bottom of the thermometer was Gunnison, Colorado with 2 below zero and Atqasuk, Alaska with 30 below…in extreme SE Alaska, the capitol of Juneau does not get as cold, but they can get a good amount of snow. They now have 8 inches on the ground…Seattle has received over a foot of rain in the last 7 weeks…windy in the NE. Nantucket gusts to 40 mph, 12-foot waves SE of Cape Cod, no tropical system involved.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Enjoyed lunch yesterday with Bill Murray and Jason Simpson…the young ladies were sure eyeing Jason. My little puppy was up very early again this morning, so we went on a half-mile walk. We did not see a cat, rabbit, bird or any living being, maybe because we were out so early. But Molly checked everyone of those spots where she had seen a rabbit or cat even in the last several weeks. She must have a computer-size memory. She is still developing strange habits on our walks. She will pick out a very small leaf on the ground and sniff it seemingly forever and then leave a few drops. This morning she tried to go to the bathroom on a small twig sticking out of the hedgerow and completely missed her target. I enjoy watching all of her little mannerisms. I wish I could copy some of them. Life goes on.

...Clouds Still Hanging Around...

CLOUDS, BUT MOSTLY DRY: Our weather won't change much today; rather dreary with a persistent cloud cover, but the moisture is very shallow, and no rain is expected during the day. Temperatures will struggle to reach the low 60s this afternoon, only slightly warmer than the past two days. Then, tonight, a surface front moves through the state. We might see a few isolated showers along the front, but most communities will stay dry, and for now we won't mention any chance of rain in our formal forecast. Following the front, tomorrow should be a little brighter as the sky becomes partly sunny. The high tomorrow should be in the low to mid 60s.

THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY FORECAST: A deep upper trough is forecast to develop over the eastern third of the nation, and promises to deliver sharply colder air into Alabama and the Deep South Thursday. Thanksgiving Day looks very chilly and breezy with a mix of sun and clouds. We will forecast a high close to 50, but we should stay in the 40s much of the day. The wild crowd of shoppers that hit the streets during the pre-dawn hours Friday will need to dress warmly; it looks like we will be down in the 28 to 32 degree range at daybreak Friday with a clear sky. Friday will be sunny but cool with a high around 50 degrees.

The weather stays dry through Sunday with a slow warming trend; it looks like afternoon highs will rise into the low to mid 60s Saturday and Sunday with a good supply of sunshine both days.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Sure looks like a tremendous day for this year's Iron Bowl Friday afternoon at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn. The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 50 degrees at 1:30, then falling into the 40s during the second half as darkness falls over Lee County. Expect a north breeze at 6 to 12 mph during the game. And, for the high school football playoff games Friday night, the weather will be clear and cold with temperatures generally in the 40s. Some stadiums could be in the 30s during the second half, so a good warm jacket will be in order Friday night.

U.S. TRAVEL WEATHER: The good news is that there will be no major winter storms, severe weather threats, or heavy rain events around the nation during the holiday period. Looks like about 80 percent of the nation will be dry tomorrow; some rain is likely over the Florida peninsula and the upper end of the Pacific Northwest coast. And, around the Great Lakes, snow showers are likely, but no serious accumulations are expected. Weather should not be a reason for airport delays tomorrow.

EIGHT YEARS AGO TODAY: The largest tornado outbreak in Alabama's recorded history occurred on November 24, 2001, as 34 tornadoes occurred during a 24-hour period and affected counties in the northern two-thirds of Alabama. Four people died. More than 70 people were injured. The deaths occurred near Millport, in Lamar County, and Sand Rock in Cherokee County.

...Another Gloomy Day...

A COLD THURSDAY AND FRIDAY: The clouds hung tough again today. This is not unusual at all in Alabama this time of year. A solid bank of clouds covered a good part of the Southeast this afternoon. Cannot completely rule out a few sprinkles or some scattered light drizzle, when clouds are that predominant.
Naturally, the thick cloud deck held the old thermometer in check. We do not see a great deal of clearing even tomorrow. Finally, we should get partial sunshine Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

ANOTHER COLD FRONT: That will bring some more changes to our weather. By midweek and especially late in the week, the new front should reach West Alabama by Wednesday morning and move through the state. You will notice quite a drop in temperature by Thanksgiving Day. To start the morning, the old thermometer should be in the upper 30s and it will get no higher than 48 to 54 Thanksgiving afternoon. Some parts of North Alabama could stay in the 40s all day. Most people like for it to be cold on Thanksgiving, so that should fit the bill.

SHOP TIL YOU DROP FRIDAY: I do not like the term Black Friday either, but for some reason the Friday after Thanksgiving over the years has evolved where most people get rid of all their money. I really do not understand why people have to be at the mall at the stroke of midnight. Not me—I will be sound asleep. It is going to be an uncomfortable morning Friday morning with fairly brisk NW winds and low temperatures averaging about 33. But some parts of Central Alabama may have upper 20s. The thermometer may have to struggle to reach 50 Friday afternoon. The Alabama/Auburn game will be played in Auburn Friday afternoon. We look for dry weather with temperatures at kick off around 50 or 52 dropping into the 40s by the second half. There will be a nice breeze, so you will need some warm clothing.

ALABAMA RAIN SCORECARD: As of today, this is a list of the surplus rain amounts for the official reporting stations in Alabama:

8.48 inches in Huntsville
4.66 Muscle Shoals
16.79 Birmingham Airport (amazing)
13.28 Anniston Airport
2.49 Montgomery Airport
5.34 Tuscaloosa
0.28 Mobile (the lowest surplus in the state)

ELSEWHERE: 85 in Miami was the warmest in the country yesterday…coldest this morning was 6 above at Big Piney and Pinedale in Western Wyoming and in Yellowstone National Park…in Alaska, it was 36 below at Arctic Village…Barrow had 24 below with a wind chill of 33 below.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: We had to get up at 4:30 this morning, because of a very early medical appointment. Little Miss Molly is always crawling out of bed when we do regardless of the hour. Even though it was way before daybreak, she was immediately active and cheerful and also ringing the little bell to go for a walk. It is the first time I have walked her that early since she was very young…I want to write more about Computer Cat soon. He belongs to Dennis Altizer, our Music Director, and he is quite a character. Come to think of it, so is Dennis. A great guy. Life goes on.

...Cool and Dry For Thanksgiving; Iron Bowl...

Indications are that we will experience a cool and dry Thanksgiving here in Central Alabama, with very few travel problems as folks heads to grandmother's house in the Southeast and even nationally. Weather for the all-important Iron Bowl looks dry and cool as well.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS THIS MORNING: In the mid levels of the atmosphere we find a weakening shortwave lifting into Virginia. This is remnant of the upper low that brought the weekend rain to Alabama. Lingering moisture will keep us cloudy through much of today. There could be a few sprinkles, but no significant rain is expected. Highs today will be limited to the upper 50s. Skies will begin to clear this afternoon, becoming partly cloudy overnight. Look for a low in the 40s tonight.

WARM TUESDAY, THEN TRENDING TO COOLER: An upper low rotating out of the Plains will push a front towards Alabama Tuesday. It should pass overnight, but not before we enjoy a very nice day on Tuesday, with partly cloudy skies and warm afternoon temperatures in the upper 60s. There could be a shower overnight Tuesday night or Wednesday morning, but it doesn't look likely. Temperatures will be slightly cooler on Wednesday, but the real cool down will wait until Wednesday night.

HOLIDAY FORECAST: Thanksgiving morning should dawn partly cloudy and cool, with a morning low of 40 on average. By the time you are
napping away a double dose of tryptophan, temperatures will be in the middle 50s. Things will get quite chilly Thursday night as colder air continues to seep into the state on northwesterly winds. Much of the area could see a freeze by Friday morning.

IRON BOWL FORECAST: Expect cool and dry conditions on the Plains for the annual Iron Bowl tilt. Kickoff temperatures will be in the lower to middle 50s, falling to near 50 by the end of the game.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tonight, Cleveland's legendary Dick Goddard will join Dr. Thomas Schmidlin and the WeatherBrains panelists for a celebration of Ohio weather history, a look at television weather and some weather folklore. Follow our tweets about the show: we are @weatherbrains at Twitter.com.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: President John F. Kennedy stepped outside the Texas Hotel in Fort Worth to address an enthusiastic early morning crowd in a light rain. The President was kicking off his 1964 re-election campaign by making a swing through Texas, home state of his Vice President Lyndon Johnson. The weather cleared as Air Force One left Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth for the short hop over to Dallas' Love Field. As the clouds parted, President Kennedy commented to Governor John Connelly, "It looks like we will get sunshine." As the Presidential motorcade made its way through city streets thronged with 250,000 cheering Dallasites, Governor Connelly's wife Nellie told President Kennedy, "You can't say Dallas doesn't love you." The motorcade turned onto Houston Street, and made its way toward the hairpin turn onto Elm, where it would pass by the Texas School Book Depository. The rest is history.

...Clouds Hang Tough...

A dreary November Sunday is in progress across Alabama. Temperatures are in the 50s statewide, except along the Gulf Coast, where temperatures are in the 60s south of a stationary front. You can probably find a few 40s over Northeast Alabama still, where rain was exiting the state. A breezy easterly wind was averaging 7-14 mph but occasionally gusting over 20 mph. The breezes are the result of a surface low over Southwest Alabama that is lifting to the north. The low was producing new showers over parts of Central Alabama. These showers will continue to grow and expand through the afternoon and into the overnight hours. Rainfall will generally be light, but if you will be out and about, expect to get wet.

SOME DECENT RAINFALL OVERNIGHT: Amounts across Central Alabama were generally in the one quarter to just over one half inch of rain. Heavier rainfall fell over South Central and South Alabama were over an inch was reported in spots. Alston Keith reported exactly one inch of rain at his hunting camp in Industry. Not sure where industry is? Neither was I. He says it is near Georgiana in Butler County. Evergreen was the winner in the rainfall sweepstakes, with 1.68 falling in the past 24 hours. Tennessee Valley locations saw most of their rain this morning, with early returns coming in just under a quarter of an inch through noon.

CLOUDS TO HANG TOUGH: The upper level low is weakening as it lifts out in the form of a trough. It will gradually take the moisture with it, but
not before clouds hang tough through most of the day Monday. Skies will clear gradually from the south, with most places seeing sun by at least late afternoon. Monday night will see skies becoming partly cloudy with lows in the upper 40s. This will set the stage for a nice Tuesday, with a good supply of sunshine and highs in the upper 60s.

HOLIDAY WEATHER: Look for a cold front to arrive late on Tuesday, bringing a slight chance of an overnight shower and a change to cooler weather over the latter half of the week. Highs on Wednesday will be around 60, falling back into the 50s on Thanksgiving. Shoppers will find partly sunny skies on Friday with coolish highs in the lower 50s. Look for lows in the 30s Friday and Saturday morning. Iron Bowl weather will be dry and cool.

WEATHERBRAINS: Tomorrow night, it will be a fascinating look at Ohio weather and weather folklore with legendary Cleveland weatherman Dick Goddard and Professor Thomas Schmidlin. Listen to the show at www.WeatherBrains.com or subscribe on iTunes. Follow us on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1999: First significant snowstorm of the year pounded Colorado with up to 20 inches of snow at Fairplay CO southwest of Denver and 9 inches in the Mile High City. The snowstorm reduced visibilities, causing a massive 83 car pileup on I-70 west of Denver. Two people were killed and 30 were injured in the giant accident.

...Here Comes Thanksgiving...

Most of Central Alabama enjoyed a pretty nice Saturday before rain began moving northward last evening. A weakening upper low and surface system is responsible for causing the rain. That surface low was moving northeastward through southern Mississippi this morning. Rain was fairly widespread overnight. The rain should taper off during the morning, although there is a good chance you will continue to see patchy precipitation throughout the day and into the overnight. Highs today will be in the 50s with lows tonight falling back to around 50 degrees.

SHORT WORK WEEK: Clouds will hang tough as we head into Monday, and we might not see sunshine until late in the afternoon. We will see some ridging in the upper atmosphere by Tuesday, and this will allow for some pleasant readings in the upper 60s. Tuesday night, a cold front will approach from the northwest, and this could trigger a shower or two during the overnight.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND/IRON BOWL: Cooler air will start to flow into Alabama on Wednesday. Expect partly cloudy skies to be the rule on the day before Thanksgiving. Readings on Turkey Day will be just a little below seasonal averages, with highs in the 50s as a large trough sets up over the eastern United States. Expect 30s Friday and Saturday morning, but it will remain dry. I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a bit of clouds in the Thursday/Friday time frame. It looks like we could stay dry until late on the 30th or so.

RECORD ENGLISH RAINS: A stalled frontal system over the British Isles produced some incredible rainfall amounts this week. In fact, the 314.4 mm (over 12 inches) that fell at on Thursday at Seathwaite in northwestern Great Britain is a UK record for a single location in any given 24-hour period with records going back to 1914. The heavy rains caused extensive flooding across parts of the British Isles that claimed at least two lives. In addition, bridges were washed away, hundreds of properties flooded and utility services disrupted. Extensive river flooding was a problem as well.

WEATHERBRAINS: It's the podcast that's all about weather. Spend an entertaining hour each week with some of the biggest hitters in weather. Last week, it was WeatherData CEO Mike Smith, who has a new book called Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather. This week, it's famed Cleveland television meteorologist Dick Goddard and Tom Schmidlin talking Ohio weather. Follow WeatherBrains on Twitter @weatherbrains.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: 45 tornadoes hit the Tennessee and Ohio valleys. Georgia bore the brunt of the storms as 6 tornadoes killed 6 people and injured 144 there. Indiana had 15 tornadoes, which was a record for the state for the month of November. One F4 tornado cut a path 22 miles long through Indiana and Kentucky. This tornado debunked the myth that twisters don't cross rivers, as this devastating tornado crossed the Ohio River twice. Follow my weather history tweets @wxhistorian on Twitter.com.
