...Colder Air Moving In...

DID YOU KNOW that the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica is as large as France? The edge of the ice shelf is 100-feet thick. Enough of that—back home to Alabama.

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of some fresh cold air moving in from the NW that will give us a rather brisk Thanksgiving Day and some cold temperatures near freezing both Friday morning and Saturday morning. The cool front that moved through overnight is already east of the state. A second front will move across the state on Thursday and by Thursday night should be near the Gulf Coast. It will be a bit windy on Thanksgiving Day with high temperatures mostly in the low 50s. Friday should be all sunshine for the greatest shopping day of the year. Here in Central Alabama, it will be around 32 degrees when you rush to the mall well before daybreak. Some of the outlying areas may be closer to 30. The high on Friday will be in the mid 50s. It will be cold again Saturday morning with lows around 31, but a milder trend sets in Saturday afternoon and continues on Sunday with the old thermometer recovering to the mid 60s.

OUR NEXT RAIN: A few showers may show up late Sunday or Sunday night, but by far the best chance of rain will be on Monday when most areas will have a good chance. The rain will extend through Monday night and in through Tuesday. There will probably be some thunderstorms in this rain event, especially on Monday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Friday night final play-off games among high schools, the weather should be perfect for football. The temperature will be in the lower 50s at kick off and probably dropping into the 40s during the second half. For the Alabama/Auburn game played on Friday this year instead of Saturday, the kick off is around 1:30 at Auburn. Ideal weather, no chance of rain at all, a clear sky and temperature peaking around 55 or 57 early in the game, but there will be some 40s late in the game. On Thanksgiving Day, Tuskegee is at Alabama State for a 3:00 p.m. kick off. Sunny and cool, in the 50s, dropping into the 40s. On Saturday, Central Florida is a UAB for a 12:30 kick off. The temperature will reach 62 in the first half and in the 50s for the second half.

ROAMING THE WORLD: A nice e-mail this morning from Irene Walters in NW England where there were astounding flood problems in recent days. She said it was the worst in years and maybe unprecedented. One policeman was killed when a bridge collapsed and hundreds were driven out of their homes. The rain amounts were the most in well over 100 years since records have been kept…generally good travel weather for Thanksgiving across most of the country…lots of showers today across Florida with 4.26 inches of rain since midnight in Homestead and 1.58 in Tampa…Miami was again the warm spot yesterday with 86…cold places this morning, 2 below zero at Alamosa, Colorado and 14 below at Northway, Alaska…in extreme Northern Canada there was blowing snow and floating ice crystals…those ice crystals are a beautiful sight if the sun is out.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I sure am thankful that none of you can eavesdrop on conversations I have with Little Miss Molly. I would be embarrassed. She had me out early this morning. I cupped her little head in my hands and had a talk with her about what I did not want her to do on the walk. She looked at me straight in the eye and actually rubbed noses with me as if she understood every word. Not so. She violated about half of the 10 things I told her. I have been walking Little Miss Molly for almost 7 years and this morning was the first time I have ever been stung by a wasp. He got away before I could extinguish him with my little blue pooper scoop. Life goes on.
