...Here Comes Thanksgiving...

Most of Central Alabama enjoyed a pretty nice Saturday before rain began moving northward last evening. A weakening upper low and surface system is responsible for causing the rain. That surface low was moving northeastward through southern Mississippi this morning. Rain was fairly widespread overnight. The rain should taper off during the morning, although there is a good chance you will continue to see patchy precipitation throughout the day and into the overnight. Highs today will be in the 50s with lows tonight falling back to around 50 degrees.

SHORT WORK WEEK: Clouds will hang tough as we head into Monday, and we might not see sunshine until late in the afternoon. We will see some ridging in the upper atmosphere by Tuesday, and this will allow for some pleasant readings in the upper 60s. Tuesday night, a cold front will approach from the northwest, and this could trigger a shower or two during the overnight.

HOLIDAY WEEKEND/IRON BOWL: Cooler air will start to flow into Alabama on Wednesday. Expect partly cloudy skies to be the rule on the day before Thanksgiving. Readings on Turkey Day will be just a little below seasonal averages, with highs in the 50s as a large trough sets up over the eastern United States. Expect 30s Friday and Saturday morning, but it will remain dry. I wouldn't be surprised to see quite a bit of clouds in the Thursday/Friday time frame. It looks like we could stay dry until late on the 30th or so.

RECORD ENGLISH RAINS: A stalled frontal system over the British Isles produced some incredible rainfall amounts this week. In fact, the 314.4 mm (over 12 inches) that fell at on Thursday at Seathwaite in northwestern Great Britain is a UK record for a single location in any given 24-hour period with records going back to 1914. The heavy rains caused extensive flooding across parts of the British Isles that claimed at least two lives. In addition, bridges were washed away, hundreds of properties flooded and utility services disrupted. Extensive river flooding was a problem as well.

ON THIS DATE IN 1992: 45 tornadoes hit the Tennessee and Ohio valleys. Georgia bore the brunt of the storms as 6 tornadoes killed 6 people and injured 144 there. Indiana had 15 tornadoes, which was a record for the state for the month of November. One F4 tornado cut a path 22 miles long through Indiana and Kentucky.
