...Happy New Year!...

GOOD MORNING! Well, yesterday felt a little springlike. Just a
little. Not quite completely springlike, just yet. How do I define
springlike? I just have to feel it. That are no real criteria. Perhaps if
the high clouds had been missing and temperatures had been a couple of
degrees warmer. Not quite springlike, but nice!

OUR WEATHER: It sounds like I have been singing the same song all
week. But at least it has been a pretty nice one. Nothing much has changed
in the forecast department. It should be unseasonably warm through at least
Wednesday with a strong southerly flow. Temperatures will be some 15 or so
degrees above normal. As a matter of fact, overnight lows will be very near
the average daytime highs. The southerly flow will also maintain a moist
airmass, making us prone to shower development. That chance today is very
slight, but will increase a bit tomorrow. Predicting exactly which periods
will be wet is difficult, but Monday looks to have one of the better
chances. Western sections will generally have a slightly better chance.

The front should arrive on Thursday, meaning a good chance of
showers and storms late on Wednesday through Thursday. The front should
hang up to our south. This means that we will turn cooler, but not sharply
so behind the front. In addition, rain and clouds may be slow to leave.

RECORD TICKER: The old ticker of weather records has been busy the
past cwouple of days with all of the unseasonably warm air across the
eastern half of the country. Records were set on Friday afternoon across
parts of Nebraska and Kansas, It was 65 in Lincoln and 63 in Topeka.

ON THIS DATE IN 1997: Heavy rains over northern California spawned
mudslides and swelled rivers. Four to six inches of rain fell north of San
Francisco as another in a series of Pacific storms came ashore. Flooding
near the Russian River was expected to be severe, but not as severe as the
1986 crest of forty nine feet. It was the most destructive storm ever in
the history of Yosemite National Park. Seven inches of rain and melting
snow washed out bridges, roads and facilities. The park was closed for an
extended period.

AS WE CLOSE OUT 2004: I guess weather persons are like everybody
else. On New Year's Eve we like to reminisce a bit about what happened
during the past year and what will happen next year. We have no idea if we
will have another active hurricane season in 2005 or if we'll have a
crippling drought or excessive rainfall or even a crippling heat wave. We
have been lucky to avoid excessive heat waves the last few years. Bill
Murray has covered the most important stories of the past year and, of
course, Hurricane Ivan sticks out like a sore thumb.

Back to the present...our unseasonably warmth will continue well
into next week. It may start turning a little colder by next Thursday and
Friday. Meanwhile, we will deal with patchy morning fog, above normal
cloudiness and a chance of showers off and on. See our day-by-day forecast
and you will note that we don't expect too many of those. We think by early
next week our high temperature could reach the 70-degree mark which would be
about 18 degrees above normal.

THE GREAT NEW YEAR'S SNOWSTORM: We must look back on December 31,
1963 when almost every part of Alabama from Troy northwestward got covered
by snow. It became known as the New Year's Eve snowstorm. Many persons who
went to New Year's Eve parties became stranded there. The official snowfall
at Birmingham Airport was 8 inches, but on the higher ridges around town
there were 14-inch measurements. The most snow, 19.2 inches, fell at
Florence in extreme NW Alabama. That was a new record for the state up until
that time surpassing an 18-inch snowfall at Moulton in Lawrence County on
February 13-18, 1960.

LOOKING IN THE ICEBOX: The lowest in the lower 48 was 4 below this
morning in Cut Bank, Montana. That town is located on U.S. Rte 2 east of
Glacier National Park, but still out on the Plains. It is where the Plains
meet the Rockies. Lewis and Clark camped there on July 21, 1806. If you
travel west of Cut Bank of U.S. 2, you will pass through such communities as
Gunsight and Sundance. How can you get more western than that?...the
mountains of Los Angeles and Ventura Counties in Southern California will
get 1 to 2 feet of new snow within the next 24 hours as a series of storms
batter the west. More flash flooding for the city of Los Angeles.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly surely has the
world's greatest curiosity. Absolutely nothing gets by her. Despite playing
a lot with her yesterday, she got into "twubble" again late last night. She
got one of our semi-upscale decorative pillows, ripped the end open and
pulled out a big part of the stuffing. That cotton-looking material made the
master bedroom look like our famous New Year's Eve snowstorm...we have good
friends that own a big black lab, Rosie, who is even more gifted. She will
actually open Christmas packages and almost anything else. Life goes on.
Happy New Year!

...Dry for Celebrations...

GOOD MORNING! It now looks like any rain chances will hold off until after
tonight’s New Years Eve celebrations across the area. Rain chances should
be on the rise starting Saturday night across the area. But our warm regime
will continue into the middle of next week, with temperatures well above
normal. In fact, our highs will be in the 60s through next Wednesday. We
probably will post a couple of 70s in there also.

OUR FORECAST: Warm and damp will be our forecast into next week. Shower
chances will return Saturday night and be with us through Wednesday, when a
cold front comes through. It is hard to pinpoint when the best chances for
rain will be, but there are hints that it will be Monday and pretty
definitely Wednesday. Thursday should be cooler with highs only in the 50s
and a few lingering showers.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Alabama takes on the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 11 a.m.
today in the Coliseum in Nashville. There will be a slight chance of some
light rain showers, but that should not be much of a problem. Temperatures
will be nice, in the middle 60s by the end of the game. Winds may be a
factor, coming out of the south at 10-20 mph. New Orleans: tomorrow night
with feature only a slight chance of showers. There will be a chance of
showers and storms Sunday through Monday. It will be dry and comfortable in
the Superdome for the Sugar Bowl, however, with a light breeze of 2 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 1963: Coach “Bear” Bryant said later that the only thing
that could have messed up his team’s chances in the Sugar Bowl against Ole
Miss in New Orleans would have been if it were to snow. Well, much to his
chagrin, it did snow the night before the big game in the Crescent City, an
amazing 4 ½ inches. Alabama would win the game by a 12-7 margin. An
incredible 15 inches of snow fell at Meridian MS, and over 10 inches at Bay.
St. Louis MS.

ACCENT ON MILDNESS: As we look out across the great USA
weatherscape this afternoon, we find that temperatures in the 60s have
surged as far northward as Iowa and Alabama is sharing in that mild weather
also. It wasn't too long ago that we had low temperatures in the teens and
highs below freezing. We don't see any indication of any sharp change to
colder for at least 7 to 9 days.

Naturally, with the milder temperatures and a southerly wind setting
in, moisture will gradually increase. That is already showing up in some
early morning low clouds and patchy fog. That will be the story for the next
several days. A few showers may show up on Saturday and Sunday, but it still
looks like our better chance of showers will be early in the new week. There
could be some decent rainfall amounts later Monday and Tuesday.
Low temperatures this morning varied from the upper 30s in some of the
valleys to the upper 40s near the coast.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Alabama-Minnesota game in Nashville at
the Music City Bowl Friday, the chance of a shower during the game seems to
have lessened a bit to only about 20%. It will be mostly cloudy, but mild,
with temperatures near 58 at kickoff and a high of 62 during the game. Down
in New Orleans at the Sugar Bowl, Auburn will meet Virginia Tech Monday
night. The weather will be "perfect" for the game since it's played in the
Louisiana Superdome. But if you're traveling down to the Big Easy, very mild
weather is expected Saturday, Sunday and Monday with highs 70 to 75. There
will be some scattered showers and maybe even some thunderstorms.

ICEBOX WEATHER: Lows this morning:

9 below at Presque Isle, Maine
42 below at Northway, Alaska
42 below at Dawson in the Yukon Territory

LOOKING AROUND THE WEATHERSCAPE: Still lots of action in the
west...the huge west coast storm has now dumped 16.11 inches of rain on
Matilija Canyon in Ventura County. Even downtown Los Angeles has been
inundated with 6.85 inches of rain, Pasadena 7.58 and Beverly Hills
5.02...in the mountains, all of this moisture translates into snowfall by
the foot. Already 10 inches have fallen near Taos, New Mexico.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Away for a time last evening to enjoy
a game of Rook and a nice meal out and to visit friends. Little Miss Molly
knows every signal that we're about ready to leave home. If someone is
taking a shower, curling their hair, you name it, she knows we are about
ready to leave. She gets a forlorn look on her face as if we are doing her
an injustice. As soon as we go out through the garage, she heads to the
front door where there are windowpanes down to the floor. When we drive
away, we see her standing on her hind legs with her little face pressed
against the window trying to get a last glimpse of us as we leave. We have
to clean that window because her little nose keeps it smeared. Life goes on.

...Warm Up Continues...

GOOD MORNING! On the evening of December 29, 1862, while camped
outside Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Confederate General Braxton Bragg forbade
his men to burn their campfires despite cold temperatures and a chill
drizzle. He was planning an early morning attack on the men of Union
General William Rosecrans. The resulting Battle of Stones River was a
deadly one, with over 13,000 Federal and 10,000 Rebel casualties. I walked
that battlefield for three hours yesterday. A humbling thought: out of
6,500 Federal graves in the U.S. Cemetery, 2,300 of the names are only known
to God.

FOR TODAY: It was cloudy all day here in Nashville yesterday.
Those same clouds affected much of Northwest Alabama also. Warm air
advection in the lower mid levels of the atmosphere produced the clouds.
The increase in our moisture will lead to more low clouds and patchy fog
this morning. The clouds should burn away enough to allow partial sunshine
by late morning.

REST OF THE WEEK: Moisture levels will continue to increase through
the end of the week in conjunction with an increasing southerly flow. Some
showers could break out New Years Eve or New Years day, but the chance will
be rather small. Chances will increase a bit Sunday and be fairly likely on
Monday, but confidence in the specifics is low. There are signs of a change
to colder around January 7th.

ON THIS DATE IN 2000: New York picked up 12 inches of snow as the
first major East Coast storm of the winter struck on a weekend, turning the
Big Apple into a winter wonderland. Theatres and businesses were still open
as preparations for the big New Year's Eve celebration were still underway.

All three Big Apple Airports were closed. In Philadelphia, the dire
predications were unfounded as the storm passed mainly east of the area.
The Eagles were making special preparations for their Sunday playoff game.
Snow blowers were brought in to clear snow from the stands, because Eagle
fans have the nasty habit of shower opponents and referees with snowballs!

THE ALABAMA STORY: It is a story of unseasonably mild
temperatures-a great contrast to last week. We do not see any major change
to colder in the near future. Temperatures will top out in the 60s at least
into early next week. Highs beginning tomorrow will be in the 65 to 67
degree range through Sunday. Not bad at all.

The cold air was still trapped in some NE Alabama valleys this
morning. Look at this interesting range of low temperatures:

27 in Ft. Payne and DeSoto State Park
28 in Pinson
29 in Anniston and Trussville
35 in Birmingham
41 in Cullman and Muscle Shoals

OUR NEXT CHANCE OF RAIN: While we may see a few showers showing up
on Saturday, it appears that our best chance of showers will be late Sunday,
Sunday night and Monday. See our day-by-day forecast.

TOP WEATHER STORIES OF 2004: Bill Murray is doing a series of the
20 top weather stories nationally during 2004. He is also going to include
the top stories in Alabama with Hurricane Ivan obviously the number one.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: In Nashville for the Music City Bowl Friday when
Alabama meets Minnesota, it should be comfortable with about 58 degrees at
kickoff and a high of 62 during the game. There is about a 1 in 3 chance of
a shower. In New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl game between Auburn and Virginia
Tech in the Louisiana Superdome, the outside weather will be mild with highs
near 70 and a chance of showers.

LOOKING IN THE DEEP FREEZE: A selection of low temperatures this
morning:

1 above zero at Wolf Point, Montana
45 below at Arctic Village, Alaska
39 below at Bettles, Alaska (32 inches of snow)
39 below at Old Crow, Yukon
44 below at Dawson, Yukon (Big 1044 MB high)
69 below at Ojmjakon, Siberia

THE WEST IS IN A MESS: Downtown Los Angeles has received 6.37
inches of rain from the current major storm system, including 5.19 inches in
the last 24 hours. San Diego got 2.79 inches along with severe thunderstorms
in the area. 10.50 inches of rain has fallen at Forest Falls in San
Bernardino County and 14.69 inches at Matilija Canyon. Even Las Vegas had
flash flooding. The outlook is for a whole lot more precipitation, including
snow by the foot in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly has certainly gotten
over her Christmas fatigue. She has been piling up toys in the floor trying
to waylay me into a ballgame with her. We had a vigorous play session at
midnight just before bedtime and she was pooped again. Sure have done a lot
of cuddling with her in the last 24 hours...last week I mentioned that Molly
was born in Layton, Utah. Soon thereafter I received a nice e-mail from
Layton. It is good to know that we have people in Northern Utah reading our
material. However, I deleted the Layton e-mail by mistake. I wish the
gentleman would contact me again. Life goes on, and I hope on and on and on!

...Warm Up Continues...

GOOD MORNING! Greetings from Nashville and the Opryland Hotel.
Every time that I have been here, I have been amazed. It truly is its own
city and is an impressive resort. And the Christmas lights are beautiful!

TSUNAMI TRAGEDY: We have been witness this week to one of the
biggest natural disasters in World history. As I write this, I am reading
reports that the death toll may rise to over 100,000 as a result of disease
and starvation. Over 60,000 people have already died as a direct result of
the tidal waves. My heart and prayers go out to the people of that region of
the world.

OUR WEATHER: High pressure is moving toward the Atlantic this
morning, and already winds are southerly over the region in response.
Moisture levels are already beginning a quick ramp up. We have seen our
last nights in the 30s for awhile. Temps will continue above normal for the
next seven days. By tomorrow readings will be some ten degrees above
normal, and we will see highs 3-5 degrees higher on Friday.
Clouds will be on the increase today as those moisture levels rise. In
fact, some low clouds and fog have already formed early this morning over
southern sections. More low clouds and fog will form overnight tonight, and
clouds will be pretty thick on Thursday. An approaching cold front will
give us a chance of showers Friday and Saturday, but I think the chance will
be slight. Those rain chances will increase a bit on Sunday. There will be
a continued threat of showers for much of the next week until a front comes
through late in the week.

ON THIS DATE IN 2002: The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had never won a game
when the temperature at kickoff was less than 40 degrees. Not one. They
were 0-21 going into their Sunday night game against the Chicago Bears at
Champaign, Illinois. The Bucs prevailed, 15-0, to win the number two seed
in the NFC. The Bucs would go to defeat the 49ers and then the Atlanta
Falcons for the right to play in Super Bowl XXXVII.

WARMER WEATHER AHEAD: That warming trend that we have been
advertising is underway and for the rest of the week, starting tomorrow, we
will see high temperatures topping the 60-degree mark. In fact, we are
predicting mid 60s for highs Thursday all the way through Sunday. There will
be some clouds moving across at times, but quite a bit of sunshine. The
latest weather models (ugh) have backed off somewhat on the chances of rain
over the weekend. However, with our current weather pattern, we still think
there is a slight risk on Friday and a slightly better chance on Saturday,
but certainly not an all day rain event. The high temperatures down the road
will be as much as 10 to 14 degrees warmer than normal for the end of
December. Enjoy those milder temperatures, because winter is far from over.

We still have all of January and February as prime winter months. If
we had 1,000 years of weather records, January would probably average out to
be the coldest month in the long term. Of course, that flip-flops from year
to year.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the Music City Bowl in Nashville Friday,
temperatures will be between 58 and 62 during the game between Alabama and
Minnesota. There is about a 1 in 3 chance of a shower during the game.

WANDERING AIMLESSLY: Hope you don't mind this little trek around
the globe every day, but I think it's interesting to know what's going on in
different places...most of the snow has melted in the Smokies, but way up on
Mt. LeConte there is still 9 inches on the ground...that pales compared to
the snow that's going to fall in western mountains due to a gigantic storm
still off shore. This sounds like a paradox, but as much as 8 to 14 inches
of snow is expected in the mountains of Death Valley National Park-most of
it above 5,000 feet...enormous amount of rain already falling in California
and they could get 6 to 7 inches more over the next five days...in the high
country this will translate to snow by the foot instead of by the
inch...already this storm has dumped 11.50 inches of rain at Figueroa
Mountain in Santa Barbara County and 10 inches at Old Man Mountain in
Ventura County...lots of flooding around Los Angeles...cold spot this
morning down here where 48 states are neighbors, was 9 below in Watertown
and Glenn Falls, New York and in Frenchville and Houlton, Maine...good thing
the Hawaiian Bowl has already been played, because Honolulu got 3.58 inches
of rain yesterday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Poor little Miss Molly. She is still
recovering from hyperactivity over the Christmas holidays. It was extremely
rare last night for her to turn down a play session. I rolled her rubber
ball directly in front of her and she just hung her head off the couch,
watched it go by and then curled up sound asleep again. When I went to bed
at midnight, I picked her up off the couch and I got a deep groan and moan.
I put her on the bed beside me and she passed out instantly and didn't move
a muscle...we were out very early for the legendary half-mile walk and she
met her little friend named Peanut. He's about 5 years old and also a
Shih-tsu. Molly is far more friendly with dogs than they are with her.
Sometimes Molly's over-inflated enthusiasm sort of frightens other dogs, she
is the same way with humans. She would make a great ambassador in the dog
world. Life goes on and we need every day we can get. Thanks to Molly, I
will live 15 years longer than normal.

...Warm Up To Continue...

GOOD MORNING! Our run of nice weather will continue for the next
few days as high pressure remains the dominant feature in our forecast
through Thursday. Skies will be mostly sunny again today. The abundant
sunshine and return of southerly winds will allow temperatures to rise into
the middle to upper 50s. Skies will become partly cloudy tomorrow and
mostly cloudy on Thursday as moisture levels increase. A chance of showers
will return on Friday as a cold front approaches, but will be more likely on
Saturday. I still think that New Years Eve celebrations will be mostly dry.

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL? The Crimson Tide travels to
Nashville Friday for a Music City Bowl tilt with Minnesota. There will be a
chance of showers, but the chances are on the small side. Temperatures will
range between 58-62 during the game. Roll Tide! Auburn will be in New
Orleans for a January 3rd date in the Sugar Bowl. At first glance, things
look showery. But it is the city that care forgot, and the game is indoors,
so who cares if it is a little damp? Go Tigers!

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: An unbelievable five day lake effect snow
blitz started in Buffalo NY on Christmas Eve 2001, when 25.2 inches of snow
fell in 24 hours, making it the third highest 24 hour snowfall total for the
city and just one tenth of an inch from second place. After a break late on
Christmas Day, the intense band of lake effect snow meandered back across
the city, dumping another 29.6 inches of snow between 7pm on the 26th and
7pm on the 27th, establishing the second place mark for 24 hour snowfall.
12 hours later, that record would be pushed back to third place as a
whopping 24 hour total of 35.4 inches was recorded, just shy of the all time
24 hour total of 37.9 inches in December 1985. But the five day total of
82.3 inches is far and away an all-time record, more than in any other
single MONTH in Buffalo and very close to their seasonal average of 93

...Nice Week Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! Now, let the returns begin. Not only the returns of
presents, but the return of warmer temperatures and eventually moisture. We
will see readings as much as 10 degrees above normal by the end of the week.

NICE WEATHER: I am jealous to hear that lots of folks have today
off. But I know that lots of you will be at the mall in the customer
service lines. But, at least you will have nice weather as you head out
today, wherever you are headed. Under mostly sunny skies, temperatures will
rise into the lower 50s by afternoon. This will be quite balmy compared to
the last few days. Our winds will become southerly on Tuesday, and will be
accompanied by the return of partly cloudy skies. Partly cloudy skies will
continue on Wednesday. A disturbance on Thursday might trend us a little
more to the cloudy side, and there is an outside chance of a shower. A cold
front will approach close enough to trigger a chance of showers on Friday,
but I still believe that most of the precipitation will hold off until after
the ball drops on New Years Eve. The weekend promises to be damp and the
following week wet.

INDONESIAN DISASTER: The worst earthquake measured around the
globe in 40 years produced a series of tidal waves that spread out from the
epicenter of the 8.9 tremor early Sunday morning. The undersea earthquake
was centered just off the coast of Indonesia. Water inundated coastal
sections as far away as Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka. The death toll is
over 10,000.

ON THIS DATE IN 2001: As Finnish Captain Ludde Ingvall and his crew
looked on in amazement, a violent waterspout rapidly approached their 80
foot yacht Nicorette in the Annual Sydney to Hobart Race off the Bass coast
of Australia. As the crew of the heavily favored yacht rushed to lash their
mainsail, the ominous funnel began scattering the fleet of yachts. The men
had to cower below deck as the tornado ripped the sail from the mast and
large hail began hammering them. The Nicorette was flipped on its side and
the racing team said they were able to look up into the funnel as it passed.

GOOD AFTERNOON: I am the Championship Game of my fantasy football league
on this 16th week of the NFL season. I will be watching this day's games
intently... Go Corey Dillon! Go Antonio Gates! Go Trussville Twisters!
DULL FORECAST: After a seeming several weeks of challenging forecasts,
this week's package is basically an easy one. The big news will be a slow
warm up that will leave up well above normal in the temperature department
by midweek.

STARTING FROM THE TOP: At about 35,000 feet that is. If you were an air
parcel at this level out over the Pacific, you might be giddy with
excitement, like you were about to get on the Mind Bender, or the Great
American Scream Machine. Oh wait, those are from my day. I don't know what
today's great roller coasters are, but you get the picture. The jet stream
makes a huge dip over the eastern Pacific, soars into a majestic ridge over
the western United States and does another dramatic dip into the Deep South
with the axis of the trough centered just about over I-65. It then races out
over the Atlantic toward Europe.

In the coming week, the eastern trough will lift out to the northeast. The
western ridge will move to the east and flatten with time, The big Pacific
trough will lean over so much that it will "cut off" into a big upper level
low off the California coast. If this happens, the models kind of go
haywire. But we do know that this pattern will allow our warm up to happen.

At the surface, a big subtropical ridge of high pressure will take a
position off the East Coast of the United States, ridging back into the
Gulf of Mexico. As it does, out winds will become southerly and allow
moisture levels to increase and temperatures to moderate.

This will be a temperature forecast through late in the week. 50s by
tomorrow, 60s by Wednesday, and mid 60s late in the week. Those readings
will feel very nice.

By Thursday, low pressure will be located over South Dakota. A long warm
front will be overtaking much of the eastern half of the country, resulting
in readings being twenty five degrees above normal in some areas. This same
low will be trailing a cold front back into western Texas. This front will
progress eastward and be west of Little Rock on Friday. It will then run
into the proverbial brick wall of the subtropical ridge. By that time, the
airmass over Alabama will be relatively moist. There will be a chance of
showers on New Years Eve, but I think that the better chance of rain will
hold off until Saturday.

ON THIS DATE IN 1947: New York City's "Big Snow." New York City records
its greatest 24-hour snowfall. In a 24-hour period ending on the 27th,
Central Park in New York, New York, received its greatest snowfall of 26.4
inches, while 32 inches fell on some suburbs. Because the storm was not
accompanied by strong winds, it was not a blizzard. Holiday travel was
brought to a standstill. 27 deaths occurred as a result of the storm. Snow
removal of the estimated 10 million tons of snow cost over $8 million. 19
inches of snow fell in just six hours at White Plains NY.

...Warm Up Ahead...

GOOD MORNING! After several days of chilly temperatures, a nice warm up is
about to begin. We still will experience a couple of nights of freezing
temperatures, but daytime readings are going to edge up nicely over the next
several days. In fact, we will see 60 by Wednesday and middle 60s by Friday.
Some parts of the eastern U.S. will see temperatures as warm as twenty five
degrees above normal by the end of the week. That's record territory.

FOR TODAY: The low pressure system that brought the wintry mix to the
southern parts of the state last night is exiting the East Coast of Florida
this morning. The back edge of the cloudiness is moving southeast out of
Central Alabama, and skies will be mostly sunny across the area. Get used
to the sun, because you will a lot of it the next few days. In fact, mostly
sunny will be the weather word through at least Tuesday.

WEEK AHEAD: High pressure will slide far enough east to allow our winds to
shift around to the south on Tuesday, allowing the warm up to really begin.

As moisture increases and a disturbance passes to the north, we will see
partly cloudy skies by Wednesday. A front will approach from the northwest,
but will run out of steam as it becomes parallel to the upper level flow.
The models have hinted as a slight chance of showers by late Friday night,
but likely late enough to prevent the marring of any New Years Eve
celebrations. In fact, our friendly high pressure system may be able to keep
the front at bay until the start of the following week.

ON THIS DATE IN 1996: The Hessian Storm dumped 18 inches of snow on
southern New England. More than 50 people froze to death in the subzero
weather that followed the snow. The storm was named for nine German
mercenaries who froze to death at their posts in Newport, Rhode Island.

ON THIS DATE IN 1776: George Washington crossed the icy Delaware River and
marched on Trenton in the midst of snow and sleet to surprise the British.
