...Nice Sunday...

The days are getting shorter and the temperatures are backing off a bit.
Today is a significant date in Birmingham climate data. It is the earliest
that we have seen temperatures in the forties in the Magic City. It
happened back on this date in 1969.

FOR YOUR SUNDAY: Skies will be partly cloudy again today. Temperatures
will warm well into the upper 80s. There is a slight chance of isolated to
widely scattered storms this afternoon. Tonight should feature fair skies
again with lows in the 60s to near 70.

MONDAY: Tomorrow looks like a carbon copy of today, with partly cloudy
skies and warm conditions. The only difference could be an increase in
afternoon storms. Still, chances will be relatively small, with coverage
expected to be scattered at best. Highs will once again be in the upper
80s.

TUESDAY: A front will approach the area on Tuesday. This will increase the
chance of showers and thunderstorms. They should peak Tuesday evening.
They will last into the overnight hours before a cold front pushes through
the central part of the state.

WEDNESDAY AND BEYOND: It looks like that we will be in for a spate of nice
weather behind the front with drier air filtering into the state starting on
Wednesday. This nice regime should be with us through at least Friday.
FLORENCE: Tropical Storm Florence began a strengthening trend late on
Friday. It seemed that the storm was finally going to live up to its
advance billing. But despite good outflow, the storm continued to encounter
significant wind shear, and the intensification trend ceased. Still,
Florence is expected to become a hurricane later today, maybe by the time
you read this. Anyway, Florence is starting to recurve now. Florence is
gradually turning to a more northerly course, and eventually will assume a
northeasterly track. The hurricane is expected to pass near or just west of
Bermuda on Monday morning. It may still be a hurricane as it accelerates to
the northeast, passing near the eastern sections of Newfoundland on
Wednesday.

Intensification, even rapid intensification is still expected and Florence
could have winds of over 100 mph when it approaches Bermuda. Hurricane
Fabian is the strongest hurricane to strike Bermuda. It hit the island
nation on September 5, 2003 with top winds of 120 mph. Could Florence get
that strong? Time will tell.

ON THIS DATE IN 1811: As a tropical storm passed near the city of
Charleston SC, it produced a significant tornado that moved northwest across
the center of the city. 60 homes, many of them mansions, were destroyed.
Eleven people were killed in the calamity.

I hold my breath every time that the Space Shuttle takes off or lands still,
and I am happy to be breathing again after Atlantis successfully took off on
its mission to the International Space Station this morning. Weather was
not a factor at the Cape.

OUR WEATHER: We started off the day rather cloudy in most locations, which
I didn't mind because of an early morning golf lesson. An upper level
disturbance passing to our north triggered the clouds. A few showers and
even thunderstorms occurred earlier over eastern Mississippi. By late
morning, clouds were beginning to break up over parts of Northwest and North
Central Alabama. Most areas should make the middle to upper 80s today with
partly cloudy skies. Expect a repeat performance tomorrow. Just a slight
chance of an afternoon thunderstorm both days. An approaching front will
bring increasing chances of showers and storms on Tuesday. Some of them
could be strong. Then drier air will filter in behind the front, giving us
fair conditions through the end of the week.

TROPICS: Tropical storm Florence certainly became better organized during
the overnight hours. The National Hurricane Center is holding just short of
calling it a hurricane, since the system has no eye just yet. But it does
have a decent central dense overcast\t now with thunderstorms concentrated
around the center. You can also see the tell-tale clockwise flow in the
outflow, indicating that Florence is coming under the influence of an upper
level high pressure system, which makes the environment conducive for
strengthening. Bermuda is keeping a close eye on the intensifying storm. A
tropical storm warning has been issued for the island, in addition to the
hurricane watch that was already in effect. Later today, we may be dealing
with a hurricane. Air Force reconnaissance took off from San Juan just
before 10:30 a.m. this morning and should bee feeding us reports on the
storm by early afternoon. The storm is moving northwest and is expected to
gradually begin to recurve and pass near Bermuda early Monday morning, then
head out to sea. Florence could pass near the Canadian Maritimes Wednesday.

ONCE AROUND THE NATION : Frost and freeze warnings are in effect for the
northern parts of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and northern Wisconsin.
Strong thunderstorms over Arizona prompted severe thunderstorm warnings at
mid-morning around Phoenix. Wildfires continue across the West. We are
heading for a new record for acreage burned by wildfire in a single year.
Over eight and one half million acres have burned this season so far.

ON THIS DATE IN 1994: Thunderstorms usually cool things down, but not when
they create a phenomenon called a heat burst. At Glasgow MT, a heat burst
raised the temperature from 68 degrees at 5:02 am to 93 degrees by 5:17 am.
The heat burst is caused when air is forced from very high altitudes to the
ground, warming by compression along the way.

...Nice Weekend In Store...

I hope that you had a chance to enjoy the rising full moon last evening. It
was beautiful as it ascended into the evening eastern sky. Since the moon
Is closer to the Earth than it will be all year, it is the largest full
moon. It is also the Harvest moon, since it is the closest full moon to the
autumnal equinox.

OUR FORECAST: Partly cloudy and warm conditions will prevail through the
weekend. Highs will be near seasonal levels, rising into the middle and
upper 80s both days. It's more of the same for Monday. Lows through the
period will be in the 60s. A cold front will approach Alabama on Tuesday,
giving us a good chance of showers and storms. Rain will end before
Wednesday.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Auburn travels to Starkville for a tilt with the
Bulldogs at 11:30. Expect partly cloudy skies with justa tiny chance of a
shower or storm. Highs will top out in the upper 80s toward the fourth
quarter. Alabama entertains the Vanderbilt Commodores at 2:30 p.m. A
similar forecast prevails. UAB will host East Carolina at 6 p.m. The risk
of a storm is even smaller, with temperatures falling into the 70s.

SPACE SHUTTLE FORECAST: The Space Shuttle Atlantic is scheduled to launch
at 10:15 a.m. CDT this morning. Air Force meteorologists predict only a
twenty percent chance of weather conditions that would prohibit the launch.

TROPICAL STORM FLORENCE: Florence finally started to get her act together
late on Friday with lots of intense convection developing near the center.
The storm became more organized and grew in intensity overnight.
Reconnaissance flights were scheduled to begin during the early morning
hours, so by the time you read this, we will likely be getting definitive
information on the strength of the storm. The storm is huge, with
tropical storm force winds extending out nearly 400 miles to the north.
Florence is forecast to pass near Bermuda on Sunday afternoon. A hurricane
watch is already in effect for
the island.

REST OF THE ATLANTIC: Nothing else of any significance in the tropical
Atlantic at this time. A tropical wave east of the islands is disorganized
at this time.

RECORD BIN It was only 61F for the afternoon high at Monterey, California
on Friday as a persistent marine layer kept skies grey all day. It was a
record for the date.

ON THIS DATE IN 1990: Birmingham recorded 99 for the daily high
temperature. What made this significant was that it was the 32nd
consecutive day that the city saw readings of 90 degrees or hotter, which
broke the previous record of 31 days which had been set in 1954.

BETTER CHANCE OF SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS EARLY NEXT WEEK: There
were some big time rainfall amounts late yesterday and last evening,
including over 2 inches in downtown Birmingham at the 33/40 skycam
location. Up in NE Alabama, Crossville got 1.41 inches. As a whole,
the percentage of Alabama receiving rain was still rather small. The
atmosphere has changed today and we do not expect biggies like
yesterday. However, an isolated thunderstorm is possible later this
afternoon and this evening. Showers and storms will also be quite
scarce over the weekend. There will be a slight increase by Monday and
a better chance by Tuesday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Most places will be dry for tonight's high school
games. On Saturday, in college football, Auburn will be at Mississippi
State for an 11:30 a.m. kickoff, Vanderbilt will be at Tuscaloosa for
a 2:30 p.m. game and East Carolina will be at Legion Field to play UAB
at 6:00 p.m. For all three games, the risk of a shower or thunderstorm
is quite small. Temperatures will peak around 88 in Starkville and
Tuscaloosa. At Legion Field, it should be near 82 at kickoff and then
falling into the 70s.

THE TROPICAL WORLD: Tropical Storm Florence is having a tough time
growing into a hurricane. She was about 700 miles SSE of Bermuda at
midday with sustained winds barely at 50 mph. She was moving WNW at
17. She is still projected to reach hurricane strength by Saturday
night. She will be turning north in the open Atlantic passing very
close to Bermuda early Monday and finally east of Newfoundland by
Wednesday. The NHC says the intensity forecast with Florence is more
uncertain than usual.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Still getting some good rains in Florida…2
inches yesterday at Orlando and 2.50 at Tampa…in Miami, nearly 12
inches has fallen during the last week and they have reached 53 inches
for the year…low temperatures this morning 37 at Hallock, Minn., and
31 at Northway, Alaska…our 33/40 weather watcher, Rob Buell, at
Upland, Calif., 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, reports only
0.10 rainfall since July 1 and less than 13 inches for the year.

CHECKING IN ON MOBILE: What a difference a year makes. Mobile has
received only 27.55 inches of rain this year—a deficiency of 21
inches. Last year they had received 65.58 inches by this time—38
inches more than this year.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly is getting more and
more accustomed to a late bedtime, mainly because we cannot seem to
get in bed until after 11:00 p.m. She does not want to fold up for the
night until we do, but last night she simply could not stay awake and
disappeared into my recliner. I feel sorry for her. I woke her up at
11:00 p.m. to go outside (translation: bathroom), but she was so
sleepy that I had to pick her up and take her out. She did her
business quickly and headed back toward the back door knowing that a
treat awaited her. Life goes on.

...Showers Will Be Scattered...

Alabama's weather will be in a holding pattern over the weekend. We will
mention some chance of an afternoon shower or thunderstorm each day, but
they will be widely separated and many communities will be dry. The best
chance of a shower will come from about 2:00 until 7:00 p.m., and the chance
of any one neighborhood getting wet is about one in five. Afternoon highs
will be mostly in the upper 80s, not far from normal levels for early
September in Alabama. We expect to see an increase in the coverage of
showers and storms toward the latter half of next week as a cold front moves
into North Alabama and stalls out.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For tonight's high school games across Alabama, just a
very small chance of a shower during the first half. Temperatures will be in
the low 80s at kickoff, dropping into the 70s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will host Vanderbilt tomorrow in Tuscaloosa; the kickoff at
Bryant-Denny Stadium is at 2:30. The sky will be partly sunny during the
game and there is an outside risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm. The
temperature will be around 88 degrees when the game begins, falling into the
low 80s by the fourth quarter. Auburn travels to Starkville to play
Mississippi State; that game kicks off at 11:30 a.m. at Scott Field when the
temperature should be near 85 degrees, then rising into the upper 80s by the
fourth quarter. The sky will be partially sunny, and a brief shower or storm
is possible, mainly during the second half.

UAB hosts East Carolina for the home opener at Legion Field in Birmingham
tomorrow night evening at 6:00. The temperature will drop from 84 degrees at
kickoff into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter, and there is a small risk
of a brief shower or storm, mainly during the first half. Otherwise the sky
will be mostly fair.

THURSDAY'S SHOWERS: A nearly stationary thunderstorm over downtown dropped
2.21" of rain at our SKYCAM site at the Daniel Building on 20th Street.
Other totals included 1.11" at Alabaster, 0.61" at the ABC 33/40 Studio in
Riverchase, and 0.22" at our SKYCAM site atop the Tuscaloosa County
Courthouse in downtown Tuscaloosa. A large percentage of the Alabama
landscape did not receive a drop of rain, however, due to the isolated
nature of the showers.
ROAMING: Tropical storm Florence is expected to become a hurricane during
the next 24 hours, but it will turn north in the open Atlantic before
reaching the U.S. mainland, and will recurve into the North Atlantic.
Elsewhere the Atlantic basin is quiet. More heavy rain for Florida
yesterday; the total in Jacksonville was 3.24", while Tampa was soaked with
2.50".

PRIME TIME: Don't forget to watch the ABC 33/40 10th anniversary special
this Sunday evening from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m.; there will be some great
footage from big weather events since we signed on the air in September
1996.

Did not get quite as cool across North and Central Alabama as
expected, but it was a pleasant morning nevertheless. The cool dry air
never did make it to extreme South Alabama and some showers persisted
across the SE counties today. In fact, there was enough increase in
moisture that some widely separated showers and storms also developed
over the northern counties this afternoon. They were moving slowly and
should dissipate not long after sunset.

Over the next several days, we do not expect any extreme heat, but
there will be just enough moisture available for widely separated
afternoon showers. We do not think there will be very many at all
Saturday and probably our better chance is next Monday.

CHECK OUT THE BIG MOON: Tonight is full moon night and we hope the
clouds will break up enough for you to see the closest and biggest
moon of 2006. Why is that? The moon's orbit is lopsided—one side is
closer to the earth than the other. As the moon goes full tonight, it
will be on the close side making it look a little wider than usual. So
look for an extra wide moon rising in the east.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Interesting note in Bill Murray's weather
calendar entry for September 6. It seems that way back in 1846, a
powerful hurricane carved two inlets in the North Carolina banks that
are still there today. You will recognize the names as Hatteras Inlet
and Oregon Inlet. That happened 160 years ago, so the hurricane did
not have a name…116 in Death Valley was the hottest Wednesday…35 this
morning at Stanley, Idaho and 31 at Gulkana, Alaska…Miami Beach
reports 4.63 inches of rain in the last 24 hours and Jacksonville 3.22
inches. This is not connected with a tropical system.

THE TROPICAL WORLD: Tropical Storm Florence is rather large, but she
has not gained any more strength. She was about 645 miles east of the
Northern Leeward Islands this afternoon and moving WNW at 8 mph.
Sustained winds remain at 50 mph. The official track forecast
continues to curve her northward and passing near or west of Bermuda
on Monday.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Hope you will check the blog for an
interesting lost dog story concerning 33/40 skywatcher, Kim Langston
and her dog, Citgo. Both Kim and her dog were lost for a while, but
there was a great ending…the search goes on for Munchkin. Melissa
Smith is encouraged by several possible sightings lately, including
two possible ones in the North Crestwood area. We sure hope for the
best for Melissa and her family. Numerous people are looking…Little
Miss Molly had two great ballgames last night before turning in and
she had me out walking very early this morning. We met two strangers
on the walking track, but you would think Miss Molly had known them
forever. She never meets a stranger and she is a joy to be around.
Life goes on.

...Moisture Slowly Returns...

While dry air remains in place in the low levels across Alabama today, a
southwest flow aloft will bring in high altitude moisture, meaning a partly
sunny sky for most North Alabama communities. We believe most spots will
remain dry, but a few isolated showers might pop up during the afternoon
hours, especially south and east of Birmingham. Pretty much the same story
for tomorrow; the chance of a few isolated afternoon or evening showers or
storms.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Moisture levels will slowly increase over the weekend, but
at this point we don't see any major trigger for rain. So, for now we will
continue to mention a chance of widely scattered afternoon showers or storms
on both Saturday and Sunday. Highs over the weekend will be in the 86 to 90
degree range across the state.

NEXT WEEK: We expect to see a general increase in the number of showers and
storms toward the middle part of next week as a cold front approaches from
the north. For now it looks like the best chance of rain might be in the
Wednesday-Thursday time frame. We could use a good rain; Birmingham's total
for the month of September so far is only 0.04", and we have seen only 0.28"
in the last 16 days (based on data from the Birmingham International
Airport, where the official records are kept).

FLORENCE: The tropical storm in the middle of the Atlantic continues to grow
stronger, and could become a hurricane today. The system is about 1150 miles
southeast of Bermuda, and is moving to the west-northwest. The official NHC
track puts Florence about 200 miles west of Bermuda by Monday afternoon as a
category two hurricane. The model agreement continues to be very good; all
of the global models turn Florence north before reaching the east coast of
the U.S. It still has the potential to generate rough surf and dangerous rip
tides all the way from Jacksonville to Boston next week. There is also a
chance it could be a big problem for Nova Scotia and the Canadian Maritimes
by the middle part of next week, about 6 to 7 days from now.
Elsewhere in the tropics, a frontal wave is moving northeast, just off the
Atlantic coast. It will bring windy and wet weather to the upper half of the
Atlantic coast during the next 36 hours, but it is not a tropical system in
the classic sense. Another tropical wave continue to move through the
northern Caribbean with no sign of any organization at this point.

ROAMING: Lots of rain down in South Florida yesterday; the total at Miami
was 4.63". Charleston, SC was also very wet with 1.93". National hot spot,
as usual, was Death Valley, CA with 116.

ABC 33/40 SPECIAL: Don't forget to join us for the ABC 33/40 10th
anniversary special this Sunday from 6 until 7 p.m. Lots of footage from
major weather events will be included as we celebrate our birthday here!

ANOTHER CLEAR, COOL NIGHT: The official arrival of autumn, based on
the calendar, is a couple of weeks away. As we have always mentioned,
people in the field of weather consider autumn beginning on September
1. The weather is cooperating as temperatures are trending downward.
It was not too long ago that the normal high and low across Central
Alabama was 91/71. As of today, it is 87/66. If you were up early
today, the morning atmosphere had a very nice feel. The exception was
from about Montgomery southward where lows were 70 or better. Let's
look at a small sampling of some cooler low temperatures this morning:

55 at Cullman Airport and DeSoto State Park
56 in Cottondale and Owens Crossroads
57 in Crossville, Valley Head, Vinemont and Russell Cave National Monument
58 in Hartselle, Hightop, Collinsville, Hanceville and Scottsboro
59 in Decatur, Tuscaloosa, Elkton, Russellville Airport

Many other areas had lows between 60 and 65. It will be nearly that
cool tonight. Starting tomorrow, high temperatures will be edging
upward and nights will not be quite as cool. A few showers may show up
Friday, but most areas will stay dry. There will also be a slight
chance of showers over the weekend.

THE TROPICAL SITUATION: Tropical Storm Florence, at midday, was some
800 miles east of the Northern Leeward Islands. She had sustained
winds of about 50 mph and will gradually grow stronger. The outlook is
for Florence to reach hurricane strength late Thursday as she moves NW
over the open Atlantic. By Sunday, she should be moving north passing
near or west of Bermuda. The general thinking is that she will miss
the USA mainland, although she may come close enough for fringe side
effects to places like Cape Cod. Forecasts that far ahead are not
sealed in concrete nor can we give S&H Green Stamps.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: The Hawaiian Islands are very interesting
weather-wise. It has been estimated that if they were flat, their
annual rainfall would be about 25 inches per year. The entire island
group has NE trade winds and the mountains extract a lot of rain. In
fact, at Mt. Waialeale on the island of Kauai the annual rainfall is
486 inches—over 40 feet. This is the highest annual rainfall in the
world.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Got my sleeping hours all mixed up. Had
a powerful 3-hour nap in my recliner between 8 and 11 last night. I
awoke at 11 to take Molly for her late night walk. When we got back, I
said, "Time to go night-night Molly." She immediately ran and hid
behind the sofa. She knew very well that she had been short changed on
her usual late night ballgame. She looked a bit disgusted, but she
gets over it in a hurry. Sure was a pleasant walk weather-wise this
morning. She was in one of her inspector modes sniffing almost every
blade of grass and leaf. I calculated that it would take 5 years to
go ½ mile, so I urged her along. I can say, "up the hill" and she will
take off even is she is headed downhill.

...Very Comfortable Weather...

Alabamians will enjoy a very nice fall preview today. This is considered
"meteorological fall", but in terms of astronomy the new season kicks off at
11:03 p.m. local time on September 22. That is when we have 12 hours of
daylight and 12 hours of darkness as the sun is directly over the Earth's
equator.
With a nice continental airmass in place today, we will enjoy lots of
sunshine, low humidity, and comfortable temperatures. Most folks will see a
high somewhere between 84 and 87 degrees. And, we will be close to 60
degrees by daybreak tomorrow, with mid to upper 50s for the cooler valleys
of North Alabama. Very nice indeed.

Moisture will begin to return at the end of the week on Friday, and we have
introduced a small risk of a shower Friday afternoon. Then, for the weekend,
a few scattered afternoon showers or storms might show up on Saturday and
Sunday, but there is little dynamic forcing for any widespread rain. The
mercury should peak in the upper 80s over the weekend with higher humidity
levels.

FLORENCE: Yesterday tropical depression six was upgraded to tropical storm
Florence. This system is far from land at this time, in the central
Atlantic, about 900 miles east/northeast of the northern Leeward Islands.
Sustained winds are near 45 mph, and some strengthening is expected today as
it moves to the west/northwest. Florence has a chance to become a major
hurricane over the next five days, and it should be in a position east of
the Bahamas over the weekend. The global computer models turn Florence to
the north before reaching the east coast of the U.S., moving it into the
Canadian Maritimes by the middle part of next week. Of course, plenty of
things can change so we will keep an eye on the system. But, any entry into
the Gulf of Mexico is extremely unlikely.

Elsewhere in the vast Atlantic basin, as we approach the peak of the
hurricane season, a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic (one that trails
Florence) has a chance of becoming a tropical depression today. And, another
unorganized wave continues to move through the Caribbean with no real change
during the past 24 hours.

A NICE CHANGE: Yesterday's official high in Birmingham, based on data from
the Birmingham Airport, as only 81 degrees. That was our coolest maximum
reading since June 13, when the high was also 81. The last time we were in
the 50s was back on June 7 when the low was a refreshing 58 degrees.

ROAMING: Lots of rain over the eastern U.S. yesterday; Raleigh, NC reported
4.06", while Philadelphia was soaked with 2.44". Tampa, Florida was also
wet with 2.82". The hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley,
CA with 118 degrees. The high in Fairbanks, Alaska was only 56.

COOLEST NIGHT TEMPERATURES IN QUITE A WHILE: We just got through
with a long hot summer. Weather people consider June, July and August
as summer. Now we are ready for some cooler temperatures. This
afternoon cooler air was slowly pushing southward . it caused some
scattered showers further down state. Over the north, however, clouds
were more extensive with just patchy light rain. All of that will be
ending tonight as the sky gradually clears overnight.

The next three days will feature mostly sunshine, although a few
showers could show up by Friday afternoon. You will feel a noticeable
drop in the humidity Wednesday and Thursday with highs in the mid 80s.
The most enjoyable temperatures will be at night. We expect around 59
here in Central Alabama with lows recovering to the mid 60s by the end
of the week. We may have some early morning lows as low as 54 or 55 in
some of the traditional cool spots.

THE TROPICAL WORLD: TD #6 became Tropical Storm Florence this morning
well to the east of the Leeward Islands. It was moving west and will
slowly grow stronger. Most of the evidence that we can assemble at
this time turns it northward into the open Atlantic with little chance
that it will bother the east coast of the USA. As always with tropical
systems, we cannot give you a money-back guarantee.

There was another disturbance east of Florence. It, too, could
develop more. Meanwhile, the old fragments of what was once Category 4
Hurricane John wet down a good part of the SW yesterday. Interstate 10
was closed for a time in El Paso. Mineral Wells in North Texas got
1.83 inches of rain, 1 inch fell in Dallas-Ft. Worth and the high
temperature was only 73.

OUR WEATHER WORLD: Did a little study of our summer this morning and
it was a long hot summer, although we did not have a headline-grabbing
killer heat wave when it goes above 100 for days on end. In
Tuscaloosa, the temperature was 90 or hotter on 85 of the 92 days of
summer. The high for the entire summer was 101 on several days in
August…El Paso has received more than twice as much rain as they had
last year at this time and the amount so far is more than double
normal…118 in Death Valley was the hottest spot Monday…lows this
morning included 30 in West Yellowstone, Mont., and 33 in good old
Deadhorse, Alaska….it was 112 degrees in Centreville on this date in
1925—the hottest ever in Alabama.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: It is always a delight to wake up with
Little Miss Molly. She woke me up this morning by jumping up on my bed
and cuddling next to me. She was as warm as a heater. There was a long
love session as I gave her a complete rub down, a belly rub and
scratched her head…you have to look closely to really enjoy all the
interesting things in nature…being a photographer for many years, I
learned as a kid to put an imaginary frame around everything I saw. On
our walk, we noticed two very young centipedes meeting in the middle
of the track. They paused for a moment like they were greeting each
other and then kept going in opposite directions. Had to do some quick
leash work to keep Little Miss Molly from using them as an early
morning snack. Life goes on among all the critters in the world.

...Cooler Nights Ahead...

We will hang on to the chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms across
Alabama today thanks to an upper air trough passing through. Moisture in the
low levels is fairly limited, so rainfall amounts will probably be light and
spotty at best. Some communities could miss the showers completely.

A PREVIEW OF FALL: Cooler and drier air rolls into the state tonight, and
most neighborhoods will be very close to 60 degrees both tomorrow and
Thursday morning. Of course, as we all know, this is not a "one number"
place, and the cooler valleys have a great chance at reaching the mid to
upper 50s. The daytime hours will feature ample sunshine, low humidity, and
temperatures peaking somewhere in the 84 to 87 degree range. Very
comfortable for early September in Alabama.

WEEKEND PEEK: Some moisture will begin to return as surface winds veer
around to the south by the end of the week, and we have introduced the
chance of a few isolated showers by Friday and the weekend. But, with little
in the way of upper dynamics, it looks like most places will not have any
significant rain over the weekend. Highs will be generally in the upper 80s
on Saturday and Sunday.

TD6: Tropical depression six continues to move to the northwest in the
middle of the Atlantic, about 1100 miles east/northeast of the Leeward
Islands. The system has the potential to become Tropical Storm Florence
today, and the latest NHC track has the system well north of Puerto Rico
early in the weekend as a category one hurricane. Systems in that position
rarely wind up in the Gulf of Mexico; they will either recurve harmlessly
into the open Atlantic, or move toward the east coast of the U.S. The
primary American global weather model suggests the system will turn north
before reaching the U.S. mainland, but it might be a threat to Novia Scotia
and the Canadian Maritimes. But, needless to say, it is very early in the
game to peg this one. As always, we will be waiting and watching.

Two other waves are worth watching; one in the eastern Caribbean, and
another one in the eastern Atlantic between TD6 and the coast of Africa.
Both have some potential for slow developing in coming days.

In an interview on the ABC 33/40 weekly podcast called "WeatherBrains",
which is available now one the web and on iTunes, Dr. William Gray of
Colorado State University told us he expects three hurricanes this month,
with two of them being major hurricanes. He also suggested the U.S. Atlantic
coast might bear the brunt of the hurricane activity for the next few weeks.

COOL AND WET IN TEXAS: A very nice weather change for Dallas yesterday; the
high was only 73 thanks to an all-day rain that dropped exactly one inch at
DFW Airport. Out in the western part of the state, the high in Lubbock was
only 68 degrees with 1.28" of rain. That moisture was from the remnants of
Tropical Storm John in the eastern Pacific.

...Some Very Acceptable Temperatures...

WE LIKE OUR THERMOMETERS NEW ATTITUDE: We are heading for some
really nice weather starting at midweek. Another cool front will move
through Central Alabama tonight. That will bring a few showers and possibly
even a thunderstorm through Tuesday morning. After that, clouds should
decrease and we expect lots of sunshine Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The
humidity will be noticeably lower starting later Tuesday and continue that
way into the weekend.

HOW COOL WILL IT BE? We look for highs only in the mid 80s through
Thursday, but climbing back up to the upper 80s by Friday. Lows tonight will
be in the mid 60s, but for Wednesday and Thursday morning, they should be
closer to 60 across Central Alabama and some 50s in the North Alabama
valleys.

IN THE TROPICAL WORLD: Tropical Depression 6 was over 1,200 miles
east of the Lesser Antilles and moving generally westward. The NHC believes
that this could become Tropical Storm Florence soon. Still another upset
weather area was several hundred miles WSW of the Cape Verde Islands. That
is way out in the Eastern Atlantic. It shows some potential and if it does
develop into a tropical storm, it will be named Gordon. Let's look in on
what was powerful Hurricane John over on the opposite side of the North
American Continent. The NHC has issued the last advisory. The center of John
pushed all the way into the northern edge of the Gulf of California. That is
that long narrow body of water between Baja, California and the Mexican
coast. Some of the moisture from that system is bringing significant flood
problems to Southern New Mexico and far West Texas. Street flooding was
already reported this morning in El Paso. They have had far too much rain in
the last several weeks.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: El Paso got 6.83 inches of rain during
August-an all-time record for that month.in the next 24 to 36 hours, the
temperature is expected to drop to 117 below zero at Vostok, Antarctica. The
wind chill will be off the charts.26 was the low in the lower 48 this
morning at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park.Death Valley had
the honors of being the hottest Sunday with 116.how about good old Wichita
Falls in North-Central Texas? They have had a summer to remember. They only
had 76 for a high Sunday and expecting rain and 77 today. Only 80 today for
Dallas and Oklahoma City.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Sure am glad Little Miss Molly was
still asleep. The community cat slowly walked up our driveway and our front
walk to our front door and sniffed under the door as if she could smell
Molly inside. I feel sure Molly would have had cardiac arrest. For some
reason, she hates cats and rabbits. We have not seen the rabbits in months,
however we sure were delighted to hear our friends, the two old crows when
we first stepped outside. They had been absent for weeks. It sounded like
the same two old crows that were arguing viciously on the very first day
that Molly and I walked and it resulted in the naming of the tallest
discombobulated tree in the community being named the Old Crow Motel. Life
goes on.

...Happy Labor Day...

It is nice not to have to get up early on a Monday morning, isn’t it? I hope that you are enjoying a nice holiday, whether or not you have to work.

LABOR DAY WEATHER: Today will be a lot like yesterday, with partly cloudy skies and warm temperatures. Readings will top out around 90 degrees again today in most locations. A few showers will develop, like yesterday, but storms will have a hard time forming once again. This means that any outdoor activities you have planned today should be fine.

TONIGHT/TOMORROW: An upper level disturbance will pass to the north of Alabama over the next 24
hours. As it does, it will propel a weak front through Alabama. It does not look like it will be accompanied by much in the way of showers or thunderstorms, although they can’t be ruled out.

REST OF WEEK: High pressure over the Gulf of Mexico and a rather flat pattern aloft will keep us dry through much of the coming week. The dry air will allow for some comfortable overnight readings just a little before normal before winds turn around to the south by Friday.

TROPICAL UPDATE: Tropical depression six formed yesterday afternoon midway between the Windward Islands and the coast of Africa. By the time that you read this, it may well be Tropical Storm Florence. It is forecast to be a hurricane by Thursday. The system was moving to the northwest toward a weakness in the subtropical ridge. This movement is expected to generally continue for the next five days, carrying the hurricane away from any significant land masses. It should be northeast of the Leeward Islands by Friday. The GFS turns it westward toward the Bahamas by next Sunday, but then curves it northward. It will be a nervous wait and see game.

SOUTHWEST TROPICAL RAINS: The remnants of Hurricane John have spread lots of moisture up into the Desert Southwest. Flash flood watches are commonplace over much of Central and southern New Mexico, southern Arizona and the deserts and mountains of extreme southwestern California. Especially vulnerable areas include those where wildfires have occurred. Flash flood warnings were issued in some locations yesterday afternoon and overnight.

ON THIS DATE IN 1939: A similar situation was occurring as a dying tropical cyclone dumped heavy rains of up to 7 inches on the mountains and deserts of southern California. Blythe received more rain than would normally fall in one year and Imperial received more rain than would normally fall in two years. Four tropical cyclones would impact southern California during the month of September 1939, an unprecedented situation.

Enjoyed a pleasant 7 mile bike ride up and down the hills of my neighborhood before 7 this morning. Temperatures were in the comfortable 60s with fairly low dewpoints. Most folks awakened to pleasant readings early today. I was looking hard for a reading in the 50s, and Vinemont delivered, with a morning low of 59 degrees. Expect another nice start on Labor Day with lows once again falling into the 60s.

HOLIDAY FORECAST: Tomorrow should dawn under partly cloudy skies. The surface boundary to the south of us should become more active as we head into Monday, with low pressure rippling along the front. This will increase our shower thunderstorms chances as we head through the afternoon and evening.

Thunderstorm activity will be scattered at best. A chance of a shower or storm may remain with us into early Tuesday.

REST OF THE WEEK: An upper disturbance passing well to the north of Alabama will provide the impetus to sweep this weak boundary on out of the state. This will allow drier air to filter into the area. High pressure will take control of our weather for the rest of the week, limiting our precipitation chances and giving us warm temperatures and relatively low humidities. Our next good chance of rain may hold off until late next weekend or early in the following week.

TROPICS: The disturbance in the Caribbean is nothing to write home about on this Sunday afternoon. But the one about 1,500 miles east of the islands is improving in organization and may become a tropical depression this afternoon. The GFS kees developing it and shows a large and powerful hurricane passing north of the islands and pushing northward off the East Coast of the United States during the next ten days. A trough over the Eastern Seaboard should help to protect the U.S. from a landfall. Bermuda will have to be vigilant, as will the Canadian Maritimes.

ON THIS DATE IN 1821: The Long Island Hurricane of 1821 is the only hurricane to directly strike the area which is currently New York City. The Category 3 hurricane raised the water level at the Battery to thirteen feet above normal sea level. The East River and Hudson Rivers reportedly merged, inundating Manhattan to Canal Street. A similar storm today is a worst case scenario for preparedness officials. A similar storm striking Manhattan today would result in countless injuries and fatalities. Damage could total $50 Billion.
