...Summer To Make A Comeback...

It was another refreshing morning across Alabama on this early Fall
Saturday. Temperatures were in the forties and lower fifties across the
area. The state's cold spot was DeSoto State Park, where it was 42F.
Readings were not quite as cold as the night before thanks to some clouds
that moved across the area during the night. Those high cirrus clouds are
still with us today.

TONIGHT/SUNDAY: A cold front is well to our northwest, trailing from a
surface low over southern Canada and the Great Lakes region. This front
will push toward Alabama tomorrow. Ahead of the cold front, warm air and
moisture is spreading northward over parts of Louisiana and Arkansas.
Thunderstorms will break out in the warm sector of the system from Southwest
Louisiana to the Great Lakes today and tonight. Some of those storms could
edge over into Northwest Alabama late tonight. They should be isolated to
scattered at best, but some of them could be on the strong side with hail
serving as the greatest threat. The front should sweep through the area on
Sunday, putting an end to any rain chances for awhile.

MONDAY AND BEYOND: High pressure will build over Alabama for the coming
week, with mainly fine and dry conditions expected. Highs will return to
above normal levels, with mid to upper 80s common for daytime highs.

TROPICS: Issac is beginning to recurve to the east of Bermuda. It appears
that the storm's heaviest weather will stay to the east of Bermuda. As it
continues northward, it could threaten the Canadian Maritime provinces and
Newfoundland early on Tuesday. Issac is the ninth named storm of the 2006
North Atlantic Hurricane Season. There have been four hurricanes. Issac may
become the fifth. Our last cold front is lingering across South Florida and
Bahamas. A tropical wave is north of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
Neither of these systems look like candidates for development. As we head
into October, we hopefully will see the typical decline in activity.

XANGSANE: Xangsane means elephant in Laotian. The powerful typhoon scored
a direct hit on Manila and the Philippines on Wednesday with 145 mph winds.
At that time, it was stronger than it is now. At last report, over sixty
people were killed and at least that many were still missing. The typhoon
is making landfall on the coast of Vietnam today with top winds of 100 mph.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: Forest Service officials in Lake Tahoe, California
announced that their annual festival celebrating the spawning run of salmon
to Taylor Creek was being postponed because of warm temperatures. Cooler
temperatures in the Fall trigger the run each year.

ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Japan had been struck by eight typhoons as of the end
of September, breaking the old record for a single season. The previous
record was six typhoons (1990.)

...A Beautiful Morning...

It is a calm, clear and cool morning across Alabama on this Saturday. For
most areas, it is the coldest morning since April. This morning's cool and
comfortable conditions will blend into a sunny and seasonably mild
afternoon, with highs topping out near 80 degrees in most spots.

ON THE WEATHER MAPS: A trough of low pressure continues over the eastern
U.S. this morning. At the surface, high pressure us just to our east over
Georgia.

THE NEXT SEVEN DAYS: A disturbance will pass to the north of us on Sunday,
perhaps setting off a few isolated showers, although the chances look quite
small. As we move into next week, a sprawling ridge of high pressure will
set up shop over Alabama and the Deep South, giving us warmer than normal
temperatures and fair conditions.

FOOTBALL FORECAST: Alabama takes on Florida in the Swamp in Gainesville
this afternoon. Fair and warm weather will prevail. Temperatures will peak
in the middle 80s about kickoff time. This means good weather for the
Alabama-Florida game in Gainesville Saturday afternoon. It will be fair and
warm with temperatures starting out in the middle 80s. UAB hosts Troy for
their homecoming game at Legion Field tomorrow night. Again, perfect weather
with temperatures falling into the 60s.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Issac is about 400 miles ESE of Bermuda this
morning. The storm is recurving to the north and eventually the northeast.
The storm should briefly become a hurricane during the next 36 hours. It
may pass near the coast of Newfoundland Monday night.

WORLD WEATHER HIGHLIGHTS: Typhoon Xangsane is heading toward a rendezvous
with Vietnam Saturday night. The storm will be packing winds of 100 mph at
landfall. Chilly air over Florida behind our cold front. It was 61 in
Melbourne and Vero Beach, Florida Friday morning, both of which were records
for the date. Several record rainfalls were recorded on Friday across New
England and the Northeast. California firefighters report that they have
contained the major fire in the Los Padres National Forest northwest of Los
Angeles. The fire is the fifth largest in California history, having burned
nearly 250 square miles of forest.

ON THIS DATE IN 2003: September 2003 was the sunniest on record in England
according to the UK Meteorological Office. Temperatures averaged three
degrees above normal during the month.

=========================================================

ONE OF OUR COOLEST NIGHTS AHEAD: Actually, last night's low
temperatures were about the lowest we've had since last spring and we
even had some upper 30s reported in the extreme north this morning.
Here is a sampling of the early morning lows:

37 in Belle Mina
40 in Valley Head, Black Creek and Cottondale
41 at Russellville Airport
42 in Pinson, Crossville and DeSoto State Park
43 at Hanceville, Collinsville, Scottsboro and Ft. Payne Airport
44 at Huntsville, Courtland and Vinemont (the Vinemont low was the
lowest since last spring)
45 in Anniston, Tuscaloosa, Cullman and Alabaster

Tonight's lows should be similar, but it could be a degree or two
lower in some spots. Most of the weekend is going to be sunny. We do
not see any significant chance of rain all the way through much of
next week. By Tuesday, places like Tuscaloosa and Livingston could
reach 90.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For high school games tonight, what can we say?
Just go out and enjoy the game. Perfect weather. Temperatures at
kickoff should be in the mid 60s and upper 50s by the final whistle.
The cool front that moved through here yesterday, is all the way down
into Central Florida. This means good weather for the Alabama-Florida
game in Gainesville Saturday afternoon. About 85 degrees for the 2:30
kickoff and in the 70s in the fourth quarter. The dew point will be
around 58-60, so even the humidity will be lower than normal. UAB
hosts Troy for their homecoming game at Legion Field tomorrow night.
Again, perfect weather with temperatures falling into the 60s.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Isaac still has winds of only 45
mph. He was 550 miles ESE of Bermuda. He will stay over open water as
he curves toward the north and then the NE.

OUR WORLD OF WEATHER: Did you know that on an average day across the
lower 48 states, 4,200 billion gallons of water falls each day in the
form of precipitation? That boggles my little mind…in search of cold
temperatures this morning, we found near zero in Northern Canada, 21
at Spincich Lake, Michigan, 26 at Barrow, Alaska and 27 at Gunnison
and Alamosa, Colorado.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: For a time I thought Little Miss Molly
was reaching middle age (age 4) because she would not make me go for
the morning walk until after 8 o'clock. Lately she has reverted to her
old self and this morning she had me out before sunrise. We saw one
lone bird sitting stone still on a fence, but we heard our dear
friends, the two old crows, at a distance. I suppose the rest of the
birds were still in their little homes watching their one-square inch
TV sets getting news, weather and traffic. Please excuse my
over-active imagination…I am working on that problem…Molly has been
stalking me all day, petitioning for a ball game. She is relentless.
Life goes on despite all the pressure.

...A Long Stretch of Dry Weather...

The coolest air so far this season will roll into Alabama today on brisk
north winds. Despite sunshine in full force, temperatures will struggle to
reach the low 70s over the northern counties of the state, about ten degrees
above normal for late September in Alabama. By tomorrow morning, the mercury
should drop into the mid 40s in most communities, while the colder valleys
will be closer to 40 degrees.

THE WEEKEND: Tomorrow promises to be another beautiful day, with ample
sunshine and afternoon temperatures recovering into the mid to upper 70s. A
more pronounced warming trend begins Sunday afternoon as we rise into the
80s. A few fair weather cumulus clouds will show up Sunday, but there is no
significant chance of rain.

WARMER NEXT WEEK: Thanks to an upper air pattern flip, next week should
feature temperatures well above normal, with daily highs well into the 80s.
A few spots might even touch 90 by Tuesday or Wednesday, especially over the
western half of the state. The ridge aloft should suppress afternoon shower
formation, and at this point most of the week looks rain-free.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: You can't ask for better weather for the high school games
across the state tonight. The weather will be clear and cool, with
temperatures dropping from the mid 60s at kickoff into the upper 50s by the
fourth quarter.
Tomorrow, Alabama will play Florida down in Gainesville (2:30 p.m. kickoff).
The weather during the game will be warm and dry, with about 83 degrees at
kickoff. The mercury will fall into the upper 70s by the end of the game.
UAB's homecoming game is against Troy tomorrow night at Legion Field at
6:00. Once again, excellent weather conditions with a clear sky. The
temperature will drop from near 75 at kickoff to around 70 by the fourth
quarter.

TROPICAL WEATHER WORLD: Tropical Storm Isaac is in the middle of the
Atlantic Ocean, and will stay far from the U.S. over the next five days as
it recurves to the northeast in the open water. A disturbance over the far
northern Leeward Islands has weakened overnight, and any additional
development will be slow to occur.

ODDS AND ENDS: Barrow, Alaska, on the Arctic coast, will enjoy 11 hours and
28 minutes of daylight today. However, on November 19 the sun will set, and
won't appear until January 23 as that frigid community will be in darkness
and periods of twilight. Yesterday's high in Barrow was only 34 degrees. Hot
spots in the nation were Palm Springs and Death Valley, CA with 106. Phoenix
was pretty warm for late September with a high of 102. Kentucky
thunderstorms dropped 1.36" at Lexington and 1.05" at Louisville. Here in
Alabama, the NWS reported "eye ball" sized hail from a thunderstorm in
Elmore County, northeast of Montgomery.

COOL NIGHTS, BUT A NICE WARM UP LATE IN WEEKEND: There were some
showers and even a few thunderstorms in progress over extreme NE
Alabama this afternoon. They will move on to the SE and they should be
east of our area by tonight, so we are calling for clearing and cooler
for tonight. It looks as if we will have an extended period of dry
weather going all the way through the weekend and into the first part
of next week. Saturday morning should be one of our coolest mornings
since last spring. We look for an average low across Central Alabama
around 46. Some of the cooler valleys across North Alabama could
easily see 40. By Sunday and Monday, afternoon temperatures will
rebound to the mid 80s. (See our day-by-day forecast for all of the
details.)

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical Storm Isaac is on the scene, but he too
will be an Atlantic storm passing well east of Bermuda and then
curving north and NE over the cooler waters of the North Atlantic. He
probably will not even become a hurricane.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: In Columbia tonight for the South Carolina-Auburn
game, there is a chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm.
Temperatures will be falling into the 70s. Down in Gainesville for the
Alabama-Florida game Saturday afternoon, temperatures will peak around
86, but with dry weather. UAB has homecoming Saturday night at Legion
Field hosting Troy. It should be dry with pleasant temperatures
falling into the 60s.

OUR INTERESTING WORLD OF WEATHER: Did you know that the Mississippi
River transports more than 200 million tons of sediment per year past
New Orleans and into the Gulf of Mexico? That big river drains an
estimated 40% of the lower 48 states and even parts of Southern
Canada. It still fascinates me that rain that falls on Birmingham goes
to the Gulf of Mexico via Mobile Bay, while the rain in extreme North
Alabama, places like Huntsville, takes a long, long detour and goes
through New Orleans. Their rain has to go up the Tennessee River to
Cairo, Illinois and then down the Mississippi…water is very important,
not only in weather, but to human existence. That point was driven
home one day when we stopped at a small restaurant and service station
during a dust storm in a remote area of SE New Mexico. We had to pay
40 cents for a glass of water with our meal, but only 25 cents for a
quart of oil for our car…a sign of the time, it was 10 degrees at noon
at Alert, in North Canada, near zero forecast tonight!

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Little Miss Molly and I have signed a
timeshare agreement for our recliner. She put her paw print on the
contract. She gets 75% usage and I get 25%. Actually, she gets more
than that, because when I am taking a delightful power nap in my
recliner, she jumps up on the footrest and cuddles right up against my
leg. We were out at sunrise this morning for a delightful walk. As we
passed the Old Crow Motel, it was silhouetted by the sunrise. The
scene was even more beautiful because of some altocumulus clouds and a
contrail from a jet plane. Thomas Kinkade would have loved that…I am
still amazed that the biggest dog in the community used my left leg as
a fireplug yesterday after his leash was wrapped around my ankles and
I could not move. He is an unusual dog. His tail always angles to the
right like a leaning telephone pole. He also has an operatic voice
like Pavarotti and his bark sounds like a human screaming. No wonder
Molly panicked. Life goes on I hope until I can reach the age of
Methuselah. I sure hope Molly can stick around a long, long time
also.....

...A Thunderstorm Possible...

A rather vigorous storm system will sweep across Alabama today, and we will
mention a fairly good chance of one or two passing showers or thunderstorms
for areas along and north of I-20. But, moisture and instability levels are
very limited, and rainfall amounts should be on the light side. Most spots
should see around a quarter-inch of rain. For areas south of Birmingham,
showers will be very widely spaced and many communities will stay dry.

Tonight the coolest air so far this season will roll into the state, setting
the stage for a beautiful day tomorrow. Even with a full supply of sunshine,
we will have a hard time reaching the 70 degree mark tomorrow, Then, by
Saturday morning, the mercury will drop into the 42 to 47 degree range for
most places. With a clear sky and light wind, there is a good chance some of
the colder valleys of North Alabama will visit the upper 30s for the first
time this year. We might even hear of some scattered light frost in some of
those valleys.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday should be a delightful day, with the mercury reaching
the mid to upper 70s by afternoon. Then, we go back into the low 80s by
Sunday as the air modifies. A disturbance will pass well to the north of
Alabama on Sunday, and at this time it looks like any showers will stay up
north with a partly sunny sky around here.

Looks like we will have a warm spell to begin the month of October; an upper
air ridge should help temperatures rise into the mid 80s during the first
half of the week, about five degrees above normal for that time of the year.

TROPICS: The 9th tropical depression of the season formed yesterday in the
middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 800 miles east/southeast of Bermuda.
This system won't bother us; it will recurve into the open Atlantic over the
next five days. If it strengthens into a tropical storm, the name will be
Isaac. Elsewhere the Atlantic basin remains quiet.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Auburn will take on the South Carolina Gamecocks tonight
in Columbia; the sky will be mostly cloudy during the game and a passing
shower or thunderstorm is possible as a cold front moves through. Winds will
be 10 to 20 mph and gusty, switching around to the northwest by the second
half.

CHEWING THE RAG: Sault Ste. Marie, located in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan, was soaked with 1.04" of rain yesterday. The forecast high in that
city today is only 49 degrees. The coldest spot in the U.S. yesterday
morning was Bodie State Park, in California, with 17 degrees. Bodie State
Park is a genuine California gold-mining ghost town, where you find deserted
streets of a town that once had a population of 10,000 people. The town was
founded by Waterman Bodey, who had discovered small amounts of gold in hills
north of Mono Lake. In 1877, the Standard Company struck pay dirt and a gold
rush transformed Bodie from a town of 20 people to a boomtown. Only a small
part of the town survives, preserved in a state of "arrested decay."
Interiors remain as they were left and stocked with goods.

LOWEST TEMPERATURES THIS SEASON SATURDAY MORNING: The weather
marches on, which is not that unusual for September and October. It is
the transition season when we are moseying our way from summer toward
winter. In keeping with that, some clouds will move into Central
Alabama late tonight. We will have a chance of some showers and
possibly even a thunderstorm tomorrow, followed rather quickly by
clearing and cooler weather Thursday night. After that, dry weather
Friday through Sunday. We think now any showers on Sunday will be
closer to the Tennessee border with Central Alabama staying dry. We
are looking for our lowest temperature so far this season Friday night
and Saturday morning. We are calling for an average low across Central
Alabama of 45. It is near certain that some of the traditional cold
spots in North Alabama could see 38. A quick warm up for Saturday
afternoon and even warmer on Sunday as temperatures top 80 degrees
again.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: It starts early this week as Auburn plays South
Carolina in Columbia Thursday night. There is a slight chance of a
shower during the game. The temperature should be near 77 at kickoff
and near 70 by the final touchdown.

TROPICAL WEATHER: The nervous weather area 850 miles NE of the
Northern Leeward Islands (translation: way out in the Atlantic) is a
little better organized. It could become a tropical depression later
today or tonight. Another smaller disturbed area was 200 miles east of
the Leewards. The next names include Isaac, Joyce, Kirk, Leslie and
Michael…way back in 1906, a major hurricane struck Pensacola and
Mobile.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: A snow avalanche gets faster and faster as it
cascades down the mountain. In some extreme cases, a large avalanche
can travel over 200 mph and weigh a million tons…in search of cold
temperatures this morning, we found 31 at Jefferson, N.C., 38 atop
6,684 ft. Mt. Mitchell, 27 at Pittsfield Farm, Maine, 28 at
Whitefield, N.H. and Saranac Lake, N.Y., 34 atop Mt. LeConte in the
Smoky Mountains and 24 at Stanley, Idaho.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: Never thought this would ever happen to
me and I need to word this carefully, because I have received several
objections about referring to little dogs bathroom habits. Molly and I
went for a walk yesterday afternoon—action exploded immediately. A
young lady was sitting in the gazebo adjacent to our house with her
two dogs, a middle-sized one and the other one the largest one in the
community. The large dog always wants to play with Molly, but is a bit
aggressive. Molly pulled me toward the gazebo. Both dogs came at her
so fast that they wrapped their leashes around my ankles twice and I
could not move. Molly had panicked and was insisting that I pick her
up. Meanwhile, the large dog assumed I was a fireplug, lifted his hind
leg and let fly. My pants leg was wet from the knee down. Even my sock
got wet. I quickly got untangled and Molly took off like a shuttle
launch and I was right behind her going slosh, slosh, slosh. I finally
got her consoled. Life goes on and we never know what to expect. Life
is exciting with that little 9-pound girl and I am so happy that she
has reversed my aging....

...Dry And Pleasant Weather Continues...

If you enjoyed the weather yesterday, you should like today's forecast for
Alabama. Dry air continues to cover the state, and we expect a good supply
of sunshine today through scattered clouds. The humidity will remain low,
and most spots will rise to near 80 degrees this afternoon. Clouds will
increase tonight, however, in advance of a strong upper air short wave and a
surface cold front.

A SHOWER TOMORROW? While the moisture and instability will be very limited,
we will mention the chance of a brief shower or thunderstorm during the day
tomorrow as the front passes through the state. The best chance of a shower
will be along and north of I-20, while the southern two-thirds of the state
will probably remain dry. The sky will be occasionally cloudy tomorrow as
the front moves through, and winds will increase out of the west during the
day, shifting to the northwest by late afternoon.

A new surge of cooler and drier will roll into the state following the
front, and on Friday temperatures will have a hard time reaching the low
70s, even with sunshine in full supply. Early morning temperatures should be
in the 40s both Friday and Saturday morning.

WEEKEND PEEK: Saturday promises to be a nice day to wrap up the month of
September with a partly sunny sky and very comfortable temperatures. On
Sunday, a passing disturbance will bring some clouds, but for the moment the
chance of any really significant rain looks fairly small thanks to very
limited moisture.

WARMER DAYS: Long range computer guidance suggests next week will feature
warm temperatures as an upper air ridge builds across Alabama and the Deep
South; even a chance some communities in West Alabama will touch the 90
degree mark.

TROPICS: A disturbance about 800 miles northeast of the Leeward Islands has
a chance to become a tropical depression over the next day or so, but it is
in a position where it will recurve into the open Atlantic, and will not
impact the U.S. mainland. There are a few more disorganized waves across the
Atlantic basin, but nothing that seems to be ready to grow into anything
significant at this time. The hurricane season runs through the end of
November, and you can have major hurricanes well into October, so we will
have to keep an eye on the tropical water despite the quiet season so far.
The water in the Gulf of Mexico remains warm and undisturbed; the sea water
temperature at Pensacola Beach last night was a warm 83.5 degrees (F).

ROAMING: A large percentage of the nation was rain-free yesterday thanks to
dry air covering a large chunk of North America. A few surge of chilly air
is moving into the northern part of the nation; International Falls,
Minnesota will have a hard time reaching the 50 degree mark by Friday. The
hottest place in the nation yesterday was Death Valley, California with 105
degrees.

Welcome to The Weather Notebook for Wednesday, September 27, 2006.

The Weather Notebook is a historical database of past significant weather
events. It includes a history of major tornadoes, blizzards, hurricanes, and
everything and anything else related to weather. We hope you enjoy it, and
if you know of a significant weather event we haven't included, please let
us know.

On this day in ..

* 1906 - Major hurricane Pensacola/Mobile was strongest hurricane to
strike the Pensacola area since the 1736 storm.
* 1936 - 21.3 inches of snow falls at Denver CO during a 60 hour storm.
* 1955 - Winds are estimated to 200 mph in Hurricane Janet in the
Caribbean. The storm would make landfall the next day with winds of 175 mph,
killing 500 and doing $40 million in damage.
* 1958 - Hurricane Helene passes just off the North Carolina coast.
Wilmington has wind gust to 135 mph and 8.9 inches of rain. Cape Fear had
sustained winds to 125 mph with gusts to 155 mph. Eye stayed 20 miles
offshore, so no major tidal flooding resulted. Damage $11 million.
* 1985 - Hurricane Gloria, the most hyped hurricane ever, passed over
North Carolina's Outer Banks and then sped northeast to make landfall again
on Fire Island and cross the Connecticut coastline near Bridgeport. Winds
gusted to 115 mph on Long Island, 109 at Chatham MA and 100 at the Blue Hill
Observatory in Milton MA. $1 billion in damage, 8 fatalities. Some areas of
Connecticut without power for up to 2 weeks.
* 1985 - Reord early season snowstorm in the central high plains. 19
inches along parts of the front range of the Colorado Rockies and up to a
foot of snow across parts of the plains.
* 1987 - Tons of mud and rock were loosened by a week of heavy rain on
Sugar Loaf Mountain near Medellin, Colombia. Some 60 homes were in the path
of the ensuing mud slide, in which at least 183 people died.

NOT MUCH RAIN FOR THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS: We always want to start off
with a sampling of low temperatures when it was pleasantly cool like
this morning. We will list only a few.

45 in Black Creek
46 in Crossville, Russellville, Valley Head, DeSoto State Park
47 at Collinsville, Russell Cave National Monument, Rainbow City
48 in Pinson and Heflin
50 in Anniston, Huntsville, Alabaster (Navajo Pines)
51 in Livingston, Tuscaloosa, Scottsboro Airport
53 in Birmingham

Lows tonight will be very similar and we could easily see some mid 40s
in the North Alabama valleys. The old thermometer should peak around
80 Wednesday. There should be some showers on Thursday, but not a
major rain event by any means. It is because of another cold front
moving through. Sunny, breezy and cooler weather again by Friday.

TROPICAL WEATHER: A broad area of low pressure 900 miles ENE of the
Northern Leeward Islands is now better organized. During the next day
or two, however, it will have a better chance of some development.
Interesting on this date in 1955, Hurricane Janet underwent explosive
intensification in the Caribbean south of Cuba from a Category 1 to a
4 in only 24 hours. A bit of history during that storm—the only
hurricane hunter aircraft ever lost was in Janet.

THE WORLD OF WEATHER: Way, way back in 1815, there was a huge
volcano eruption on the island of Sumbawa in Indonesia. The volcano
was named Tamboro. Volcanic ash circulating around the world led the
way to some famous weather lore. The next year, 1816, became the year
without a summer. Severe frost occurred in June from Canada to
Virginia and a number of other major frosts in the late summer. In the
history book of Madison County, New York, it tells of frost in every
single month of the year in 1816…the lowest temperature in the USA
this morning was 17 at Doyleville, Colorado and 20 in Eagle, Alaska.

MY TINY CORNER OF THE WORLD: I like the way Melissa said it this
morning as she jogged with Alex, her other dog, she said, "Isn't it
amazing how animals can carve out a little spot in our hearts. She was
referring to Munchkin who is still missing somewhere in the eastern or
southern part of Birmingham. Numerous people are looking. It was pure
delight to get out with Little Miss Molly very early this morning. I
actually counted the 66 times she changed directions, backtracked or
left the track to inspect something. If you could map our track, it
would look like a jigsaw puzzle. I felt like a yo-yo when I got home.
She was very assertive and would not even think of coming home unless

...A Fine Fall Day in Alabama...

Today is a great example of why fall is my favorite season. We will enjoy a
cobalt blue sky, low humidity, bright sunshine, and very comfortable
temperatures. I can't imagine anyone griping about this weather. Most
communities will reach the 80 degree mark by mid-afternoon, slightly below
normal for late September in Alabama. Tomorrow promises to be a dry and
pleasant day as well.

SHOWERS ON THURSDAY: A very dynamic upper trough will sweep across Alabama
Thursday night. The associated surface cold front will bring some risk of
showers to the state, but the moisture supply will be very limited, and for
now it looks like the best coverage of showers and storms will be over the
far northern part of the state, over the Tennessee Valley. Any showers down
this way, along the I-20 corridor, should be pretty scattered, and rainfall
amounts should be light.

MORE COOL AIR: A fresh supply of cool, dry air will follow the Thursday
night front. Friday will be a sunny, but breezy and cool day with the
mercury struggling to reach the 70s. We should begin the day Friday with
temperatures down in the mid 40s.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: At this point the weather on Saturday looks nice, with
ample sunshine and cool temperatures. Another strong upper air system will
roll through the state on Sunday, and the latest medium range computer
guidance is now suggesting that there could enough moisture for a few
showers and thunderstorms across Alabama. Then, after that front yet another
push of cool and dry air rolls into the state Monday. So, on an average
basis temperatures should remain below normal for the next five to seven
days.

TROPICS: While there are no active tropical storms across the Atlantic basin
now, a disturbance about 950 miles east/northeast of the Leeward Islands
seems to be getting better organized. If this does become a tropical
cyclone, the computer models keep this one out over the open Atlantic, and
the threat to the U.S. mainland seems very small. The next named storm will
be called Isaac.

ROAMING FAR AND WIDE: One of the wettest places in the nation yesterday was
way up in Alaska, where Juneau picked up 1.49". The high there yesterday was
only 51 degrees, and chilly and wet weather will continue through mid-week.
The hottest place in the U.S. was Gila Bend, Arizona with 105 degrees.

SKYWARN TRAINING TONIGHT: ABC 33/40 meteorologist Brian Peters will be in
Centre in Cherokee County tonight at 6:30 p.m. for a spotter training class.
Brian was invited by Cherokee County EMA Director Beverly Daniels to do the
class which will be held at the Rescue Squad Building, 725 Cedar Bluff Road.
That is on the north side of town along SR 9/68 near the intersection with
CR 118. If you have an interest in tornadoes and what's involved in trying
to spot them, this class is for you. Later this week will be announcing the
date and time for our annual Storm Alert XTREME training event to be held in
Birmingham this fall. Stay tuned!

...Beautiful Weather Day Ahead...

Good morning from the Rust Belt again. No, I am not back in Pittsburgh,
which I enjoyed immensely, by the way. Rather, I am in Cleveland, Ohio. At
least for these two cities, I think that the moniker "Rust Belt" is a
misnomer. I was very, very impressed with the beauty, progressiveness and
cleanliness of Pittsburgh on our Chamber of Commerce Birmingham Innovations
Group benchmarking trip. We were treated with such friendliness and
respect. Having the Chairman of U.S. Steel speak to us over dinner at the
famed Duquesne Club was a highlight of many highlights. The abandoned steel
mills and associated brownfields are being recovered and redeveloped. The
University of Pittsburgh Medical Center is a leader. The new convention
center is beautifully located on the river, along with the stadiums for the
Steelers and Pirates. Residential is popping up downtown. The city's
cultural environment is superb. There are a lot of parallels between
Birmingham and Pittsburgh and a fine affinity between our residents. I hope
that we are able to move our city in the same directions at the same
velocity that they have.

OUR FORECAST: Yesterday's cold front is delivering cooler and drier air to
Alabama. Low clouds and fog will be rather commonplace this morning thanks
to all of the residual moisture left over from weekend rains. The stratus
will burn off rather quickly this morning, giving way to increasing
sunshine. Stratocumulus clouds will be the normal as the lower levels of
the atmosphere become slightly unstable beneath cooler air aloft. These
clouds will dissipate this evening, leaving clear skies and making way for
some cool temperatures overnight. Lows will average 50 degrees across the
area, but several areas may make the upper 40s. Tuesday and Wednesday will
be gorgeous days with mild daytime temperatures and cool, comfortable
overnight
readings. Our next weather maker will be a storm system that will approach
the area of Thursday, increasing our cloudiness and our chances for showers.

There could be a thunderstorm too, but that doesn't look likely. The best
chance for rain will come Thursday night, perhaps lasting into early Friday.
A
trough will set up shop over the eastern United States, keeping us cool into
the extended time frames.

IN THE TROPICS: Helene was downgraded to an extratropical storm yesterday.
She is moving out over the northern Atlantic. The tropical wave at about 45
west longitude is moving into an area where upper level winds are less
favorable for intensification and development is not expected at this time.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY : An outbreak of tornadoes associated with the remnants
of Hurricane Rita brought eleven tornadoes to western Alabama. Three of the
tornadoes were F1 intensity. One tornado was captured live on the ABC3340
Towercam in Tuscaloosa. . It was the same Towercam that captured a deadly
F4 tornado on December 16, 2000.

...Drier and Cooler Weather Ahead...

Showers and storms overspread Alabama overnight last night. Many areas
received very beneficial rainfall amounts. North of Birmingham and west of
Oneonta, widespread 2-4 inch rainfall estimates were noted on Doppler radar.
Some selected rainfall amounts through 6 a.m.:

3.80 at Tuscaloosa; 3.04 at Scottsboro; 2.80 at Guntersville; 2.41 at
Cullman Ag Station; 2.35 at Russellville; 1.91 at Muscle Shoals; 1.88 at
Decatur; 1.49 at Huntsville International;1.28 at Pinson; 0.85 at Vinemont
(Cullman Airport); 0.73 at Birmingham International; 0.47 at Fort Payne;
0.27 at Anniston.

Some Skywatcher reports: Stephanie Honeycutt in Alabaster reported 1.83;
Grady Gunnells in Sterrett reported 0.83 as of 7 a.m. with steady rain still
falling; 0.79 at my location in Trussville

OUR FORECAST: Our cold front was approaching Birmingham and Huntsville at
noon. This front marks the leading edge of much drier and cooler air that
will overspread the area starting tonight. Most of the showers were well
east of the front, although there could be a few sprinkles this afternoon.
The new airmass will give us beautiful weather through midweek. We will see
low clouds and fog form overnight tonight as skies clear. This means that
most areas will start off on the gray side Monday morning, but sunshine
should quickly return during the morning. Look for those beautiful
stratocumulus clouds to form in the post frontal airmass Monday afternoon.
Morning lows will be in the middle to upper 50s. Lows Tuesday morning will
drop to near 50 degrees on average, with several locations finding the upper
40s. Tuesday and Wednesday will feature near total sunshine. By Thursday,
another weather system will be approaching Alabama. It will not have much
to work with in the way of moisture, so rainfall will be limited. There may
be a few storms with the system as it passes through Thursday night, but
those chances look limited. Precipitation should end early Friday.

TROPICS: Helene has made the transition to an extratropical system. It is
moving out to the east northeast across the Central Atlantic. It may bring
gale force winds to the Azores. A low pressure system affiliated with a
tropical wave over one thousand miles west of the Cape Verde islands
continues to show signs of increasing organization and a tropical depression
may form during the next day or so. The system should remain over the open
Atlantic.

ON THIS DATE IN 1985: Hurricane Gloria was dubbed the "killer storm of
Century" by media, sending entire east coast into a panic. The storm,
packing
measured winds of 156 by aircraft reconnaissance and a central pressure of
918.6 mb, was the strongest ever recorded in the western part of the
Atlantic Ocean.

...Rain and Storms Today...

A line of thunderstorms sagged into Northwest Alabama during the evening
hours and its progress slowed considerably. The result was some heavy
rainfall amounts over the northwestern quarter of the state. Two to four
inch amounts were widespread according to National Weather Service Doppler
radar.

OUR WEATHER: Our slow moving cold front is still to the west of Alabama
this morning. It will continue pushing southeastward today. This will
result in continued showers and storms gradually ending from the west during
the day. Rain should be confined to southeastern sections by early
afternoon.

Winds will shift around to the west and northwest and skies will begin to
clear behind the front. Under clearing skies tonight, good radiational
cooling will combine with leftover ground moisture to produce low clouds and
fog. This will give a gray start to Monday, but sunshine will return fairly
quickly during the day.

REST OF THE WEEK: High pressure will build into Alabama behind the cold
front. Tuesday morning will dawn clear and cool, with lows generally in the
low 50s. A few of the normally cooler locations will see forties by Tuesday
morning. Sunny conditions will be with us still on Wednesday. By
Thursday, an approaching weather system will bring increasing shower and
thunderstorm chances to Alabama. They will be most likely during the
overnight Thursday into early Friday morning.

ONEONTA DAMAGE: The National Weather Service sent a survey team to Oneonta
to ascertain the F rating of the tornado damage left by Friday night's storm
in Blount County. They discovered that there were three actual tornado
paths. Each caused F2 damage.

IN THE TROPICS: Helene is in transition this morning from a tropical to an
extratropical system. It still has hurricane force winds, and may for the
next 24 hours. It is moving out to the east northeast across the Central
Atlantic. It may bring gale force winds to the Azores. A low pressure
system affiliated with a tropical wave over one thousand miles west of the
Cape Verde islands continues to show signs of increasing organization and a
tropical depression may form during the next day or so. The system should
remain over the open Atlantic.

ONE YEAR AGO TODAY: Hurricane Rita made landfall around 2:30 a.m. CDT just
east of the Louisiana/Texas border between Sabine Pass and Johnson's Bayou
as a Category Two storm with top winds of 120 mph. A shadow of its former
Cat 5 self, the storm still brought a devastating storm surge to the coast
of Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Houston dodged a bullet, as over
2.5 million residents evacuated in advance of the hurricane.
